Speaker 1 (00:06):
Good afternoon, and welcome in. This is Sticking Hack Reacts.
Your host Adam Grubbed from Sticking Hack. That's Keith Stewart,
ESPN radio host of the Pro Show every Friday, as
well as a creator of Read the Line, where you
go for your betting news and analysis. Keith Stewart. Good
to see you. Uh. Today's show is dedicated to first
(00:27):
okay mostly first, alright, first, perhaps first question mark? Al right,
first in the stick and Hack world, which could really
be anything. Uh So here's here's her action. First up.
First up is A T T A T T Pebble
Beach pro Am. Uh. Tom HOGI wins for the very
first time on the p G A Tour, first time winner,
(00:49):
a household name in uh, in many households across the
nation when it comes to golf. But how cool is
that Tom hog wins? And it's the A T T
Pebble Beach Pro Am, which first of all me your
reaction and then explain the format and then tell me
a little bit about Tom Hogan. Okay, well, I'm super
psyched about Tom HOGI, so let me just get that
out of the way. Two thumbs up. That's back to
(01:11):
back weeks where guys have had over two starts. I
think it was two D five for Luke Liszt, two
one starts for Tom Hogan and they win absolutely great.
The A T and T Pello Beach program, it's killing me, man.
I don't know how much more I can take of
Macklemore and Alfonso ribera Swing and Bill Murray. You know,
it's just so much. I really just want to watch
(01:32):
the golf. I want to see the stories take place
on the golf course. Um, you know, not everybody loves Raymond.
I mean, I don't know if you knew that, Adam,
but not everybody does. And you know, Ray Roboto hitting
it in a greenside bunker, you know from the member
tease just doesn't do it for me. So hopefully, well
at least this is our last program of the year
(01:53):
on tour, so we're done with all of these rotating
golf courses and all that sticks so waste management. This
week we're back to real golf and I'm excited about it.
So but I mean, for all of us that are
like that really followed golf, guys like Tom Hog winning
this weekend over Jordan's speeed over a Patrick Can'tley like
pulling through and doing it back nine thirty two four birdies.
(02:16):
The guy he's a tremendous ball striker, and it was
cool to see that kind of like see him believe
in himself and take that next step and wins. I
thought it was cool. So let's go through some of
the facts here, Okay. Fact number one, George's speech was
literally on a cliff interest from death, falling down this
massive cliff. It is one of the most we will
(02:37):
be an iconic Jordan's peace shot. Uh and I mean
literal shot of of him over this cliff, hitting this,
hitting this, uh, this golf shot right, So you gotta
stop right there. Could you even stand there? Because I couldn't.
I don't. I don't do heights, so there's just no way, right.
They the next day on Sunday, they they brought in
(02:57):
like a side camera review and they said how high
it was. It was six d eight feet off the
cliff down to the beach. I mean, I couldn't stay.
I couldn't even go near that ball, not alone. It's
it's hard to it's hard to watch, but it was
awesome to watch. But he looked back at his caddier.
He goes, he goes, Wow, that was tougher than I thought.
That was scarier than I thought. Um, but it is.
It's it was a cool, a cool moment of the tournament.
(03:18):
But I do need to go back because the entire
point of and what we've talked about in the past,
and I'm not arguing with you, but is to get
more people involved in golf and to get people excited
about it. And and not that founds of ribera brings
brings the heat when it comes to a pop culture.
But there are there are some some celebrities there that
they're bringing new eyeballs to the to the game to
(03:41):
watch that you think it is jump the shark overplayed? Um? Golf.
Twitter was saying the same thing, like I'm done with
Bill Murray because he's become a bit of a caricature
of himself. Right, Um, is that truly where that tournament
dies is because it is not a serious tournament. And
(04:01):
does that tarnish Tom Hogan's win because you got you
got Bill Murray hitting hitt and puts with his back
to the hole and he got offense over Berra doing
his dance in the middle of the fairway. Does that
cheapen a win for Tom Hogan. Absolutely not right. So
I mean, and I know you're not saying that, but
I certainly want to just come out and say absolutely not.
(04:23):
You go back to Hudson Swofford a couple of weeks
ago at the AMX winning in that program format. Definitely,
those guys seventy two holes going against Jordan's speed. That
an iconic venue like that. If anything, with all of
that going on in the six hour rounds and the nonsense,
it might even just like heighten his self belief that
he could ignore all that nonsense and then get the
(04:44):
job done when it came down to it on Sunday.
So it definitely doesn't devalue it at all. It's just
but the golf is meant to be entertaining, Adam. I
don't need entertainers. I need Birdie's right. I need more scoring.
We talked about with the LPGA, Well, let's have the
LPGA play seven thousand yard golf courses and shoot one
under for four days. No, right, what was great about
(05:06):
the LPGA this weekend? They had a three round shootout
and somebody shot eighteen under. Well, that's exciting, right, Tom
Hoogan making birdies going that's shoddy heat on sixteen to
like an inch right. You can hear to the announcers,
that's what people want to see. They don't want to
see the Carlton dance right. If they do, they'll go
watch you know, America's funniest home videos and they can
see your family, you know, happenings and stuff, you know,
(05:29):
for for the whole nation to see. I mean, honestly
like that. That's definitely never my point when it comes
to being more entertaining. What's entertaining to me is watching
Bryson drive the first green in the Ryder Cup and
then pull out his putter on the T box, you know,
like Excalibur, and be like, you know, are you not entertained?
That's what we're talking about. Got it all right? Let's
(05:49):
move on number two. Another first for a golfer and
another first for a country Sir Leona McGuire. First LPGA win.
It's the drive on. Excuse me, pardon me. You have
to remember, Keith, I'm a hack here, and I've also
had a couple of cocktails over the weekend. Drive on
championship correct, Yes, championship boom. That is a victory for me.
(06:14):
The LPGA drive on championship and and a victory for her.
Leonett McGuire such a bright young star that we've not
in this whole world that we've been talked about with
the LPGA. We're here in the same names over and
over again, week after week. This is a new name
to many. Uh. She was part of she was part
of the Spirit International years ago. She was an up
and coming golfer at that point. And now she's here.
(06:35):
She's arrived. Not only has she did she win her
first tournament, but this is the first I think Irish born,
Ireland born golfer to win an LPGA event and perhaps
even a event. This was massive weekend for her. Tell
me your reaction to all that. I tell you. You know,
(06:56):
I was handy Cappa and Leona last weekend. I thought
she'd be great over there in Boca Rio because they
had terrible weather. It was like Irish weather, and she
finished something like that. But she was playing well. Why
I didn't pick her again this week, I don't know.
I'm a moron, but I mean, honestly, at the end
of the day, she was on fire. And this has
(07:18):
just been a long time coming because she's been on
tour for two years. I mean, she makes tons of cuts.
She's a great putter, she's really good, hits a ton
of greens and regulation um. I mean, she went to
Duke four time All American. She holds the record Adam
for the longest woman amateur to be number one in
the world for a hundred and thirty five weeks. I
(07:39):
mean so, so it's it's it's cool to see her
finally step up on a big stage like she did
in September at Inverness Um when you know she went
undefeated at the Solheim Cup. She's the real deal man,
and it's kind of cool that you know, she's really
the first big woman star from Ireland, as you mentioned,
I didn't know that, So that's like a real really
(08:00):
cool thing that you just brought up there that Ireland
and never had a woman win on the LPGA tour.
And I mean, so, I think you're gonna see a
lot more now that she's broken through. And I mean
she did it beating the likes of like LEXI had
a charge on Sunday and you know Nellie's in the field,
So it's I think it's awesome. Big thumbs up for
Leona McGuire. Yeah, that's the name of We're gonna We're
(08:20):
gonna hear often, I think in the in the years
to come, and we we can't say enough just the
young talent, the excitement on the LPGA, the camaraderie, the family,
the the emotion that we're seeing out there, but more
specifically the amazing, amazing golf and uh, you know, I
(08:40):
saw Lexi eagle hole out there from the middle of
the fairway throughout the weekend and and just some some
really stunning shots. Um, I'm continually to be impressed by
by every single weekend that that the LPGA is up.
So go back to your point, that to me is
golf entertainment, right If you watch that final round and
(09:03):
Lexi is making a charge and she's one of the
biggest names, right and Leon has got a hold on
for her first win. To me, as a fan of sports,
that's what I want to see. I want to see
the buzzer beater. I don't need to see, you know,
the the guy that runs around and Mark McGrath out there. Yeah, yeah,
lead singer shooter for the for the Yellow Yeah, Mark mcgratha. Fella, Hey,
(09:31):
I just want to fly, all right, who doesn't. Who doesn't? Um?
All right, let's move on number three. That's is HV three.
This is Harold Varne, the third HV three coming in
with a win on the Asian Tour. Uh, the Live
Live Right, Live Life, Uh, Greg Norman Extravaganza, the Saudi Invitational.
(09:54):
There's so many names this thing has, it doesn't matter what.
It's called. HV three A winner and he's not wanting
quite some time. He is such a lovable fella, if
I can use a phrase from the fifties, he is
out there. Uh and and he won, and that's a big,
big moment for him. Your reaction HP three huge, huge
win for him. And everybody loves this guy. I mean
(10:16):
everybody that talks to him in the media tent every
time you see him. You know, last year we watched
him for a couple of holes of my son and
he wanted to go watch him because he wears Air
Jordan's shoes and the guy was in the rough. He
was like ten ft from us, and my son was like, man,
those shoes are fired. He gave a big smile. I mean,
h B three, you gotta love this guy. He only
(10:36):
has one professional win, like big time professional win that
was five years ago at the Australian p G A.
So to see him breakthrough with this field, you know
he jumps from like or ninety five and official world
rankings two inside the top fifty. That opens up more
playing opportunities for him. And to go back to your
I know your theme was first this week, but I'm
changing it. I'm changing it to the entertainment value. The
(10:59):
guy made eagle on the last hole from like ninety
feet drops this bomb to win. He had one five years.
I mean, just a tremendous, tremendous theater right there and
he and he beats of all people, some of like
you know, one of your favorite guys, Bubba Watsons, were
of my favorites. I'll tell you this. Over the last
couple of weeks, we've had so many first timers, we've
had so many first time wins, We've had so many
(11:21):
great moments. Luke list last week, the theater of him
as soon as he won, rushing to his family, not
even shaking hands and just rushing into the arms of
his wife and you know, his wife saying, hey, daddy
won the trophy, and just that that those kind of
little little moments and then you got HP three uh
doing a member remember member bomb for the for the
(11:41):
victory in front of all of his buddies. There you
know it was. It's it's awesome. You've got George Speed
hanging on the edge of a cliff hitting hitting shots.
But let's not forget you still got Bill Murray hitting
a punt from six ft this back to the hole
with all that, which is more entertaining. I'll tell you what.
We're just getting warm up for this week. Waste management.
(12:01):
That's right, it is back, and it's gonna be better
than ever. It is going to be huge. Um, all right,
So I I would be remissed Keith kee stewing Adam
grew up here sticking that reacts. I did not mention
this reaction. Guys, a bonus react. So obviously it's pretty
thumbs up. We got thumbs up all over the place
for Tom, for Leona and for for Harold, all the victory.
(12:23):
Everything is great, right, everything is great in golf. Um,
But I need I need you know me, I like
I like to to take a town turn towards negative
Ville every now and then. So let's go to your
boy Phil. Well, hang on, wait, with thumbs down on
the pro am format. The LPGA is like hotter than ever.
They have three weeks off until they go to Singapore.
(12:43):
I'm thumbs down on that, okay. And what do you get?
What do you what do you got for me from
Saudi Raia. I'm not manufacturing negative thoughts. I'm just saying
that that overall we've been very positive and every now
and then I like to to show just kind of
stir it up a little bit. So stirring it up
as as your boy Phil does. Phil Mickelson, who's some
of you might have heard from the PGA Championship last year.
(13:05):
I don't know if you're aware of that, uh, fifty
years old. He came out over the week and this
is back to my favorite topic of Greg Norman and
the and the live entertainment golf situation that's happening. And
he said, and I will um paraphrase, he said that
the p G a is has exorbitant greed, uh and
(13:26):
that they that the way that they're running their organization
and the association is and the PGA Tour specifically is
is greedy. That they don't give media rights, they don't
do this, they don't do that and if there's another
place out there that's going to give them a more
control over their their livelihood and their golf, that he
thinks that everyone should look at it. PGA players came
out and they said, Hey, this guy's out of his mind.
He's talking to us about exorbitant amount of greed, like
(13:48):
he's he's taken a private jet to to the fuel
station down the down the road for a slurpee. What
are we talking about here, Keith? Your reaction to your
boy Phil calling out the PGA tour, Hey, Um, it's
the it's not it's not a good look for Phil.
It's just not. You know, the guy's worth probably four adam.
(14:12):
He owes his life, you know, and all of that
earning potential to the p g A Tour. I mean
he won as an amateur in college when he was
at Arizona State, and you know he's won forty plus
times since then. Uh, the p g A Championship, the
Ryder Cup, They've all built up his career and his resume.
So I don't really know where all this is coming from.
There's obviously some bad blood and he's obviously uh drinking
(14:33):
a lot of wine with Greg Norman or something man.
But uh I honestly, you know, we've talked a lot
about this, and you know I we talked about in
a bunch on Friday on air when on the Pro Show.
And and my my worst fear in all of this
is that like twenty guys jump over to this thing,
and then you know, all the Tiger Disciples, the jt S,
(14:55):
the Speeds, the Cantley's, the more cow Is, They're all
gonna stay over there at the p G A tour,
right because that's where your legacy is gonna be built.
And you know, I mean, at the end of the day, Adam,
I know the answer to this question, but are you
gonna go follow Bryson or are you gonna go follow Morikawa?
You know when it comes to making decisions right exactly.
And so if we get this split, if there's a
(15:17):
schism between these two tours, we're gonna get what we
actually don't want, which is we want the best players
in the world playing against each other all the time.
And if we split, it's gonna go back like the
eighties when Sevy and Faldo and Monty were all over
in Europe and then our guys were over here and
then we'd only see him four times a year, like
we want to see them all the time. That's the
(15:38):
entertainment thing, that's that undercurrent theme that we keep bringing
up week in and week out. You don't get that
if you don't have like what you have this week
out in the desert. You've got the hottest golfer in
the world, Victor Hoblin. You've got Rob who's piste off
because he hasn't won in a while. You've got Brooks
in the mix who says he loves the crowds and
everything I mean that, You've got, You've got Speed playing
(15:58):
from cliffs. He's gonna go the desert probably Restless Snake
this week. I mean, it's gonna be awesome, you know,
hold on, hold on a second, relaxed, let me let
let me, let me back up for a half second,
because we're running outside. But because I we could dedicate
the entire show to this, and I think we should.
We should just react to all of the craziness that
this is going to be because um, I'm agreeing with you.
(16:21):
I love the theater of the whole thing, but if
it actually came down to it, it's no different. And
and in the history of sport, what split has ever
actually worked when you look at the I R. L
and cart back in the in the nineties, when you
when you look at it, I guess maybe the NFL
back in the in the day when they made their
own their own deal. But for the most part, any
any any league that is specifically designed and has history
(16:43):
and has this nucleus of talent and amazing nous to
split off from that has never worked. It is has
become it becomes a circus. And and if if you
know Tom hogans go over to to that side, Okay,
good for Tom, because he's gonna make some money, and
he's gonna make more money. He's gonna make a G
two or perhaps but at the end of the day,
eyeballs are gonna move over Tom for Tom Hoge. So
(17:05):
what are we talking about? Um, let's let's let's do
that and then we'll make a solid promise. You're live
in the air sticking out reacts. We will dedicate entire
show to this, to the nitty gritty of the details,
because I still need to understand more about it. But
I think are the listeners would be fascinated to know
really what this means and what this could mean down
the road. He's Keith Steward from ESPN Radio hosts The
Pro Show, and read the line amount of growth is
(17:26):
taking pack. Thank you for being a part of Sticking
at Reacts are weekly reaction to p g A and
the l p g A. Obviously a lot coming up
this weekend with the ways management open. I can't wait
for Monday to hear your take on it. Let's let's
hope for an incredible weekend of golf. A fun weekend,
um and enjoy your rest of your afternoon. Thanks for
listening and God speed to you and yours. Adam. Always
(17:49):
loved lunch with you on Monday Man. Thanks awesome later
on
