Speaker 1 (00:05):
Good afternoon and happy Monday. It is Sticking Hack Reacts.
I'm Adam growing from an undisclosed location in the world.
Uh not in the typical sticking ac studios. But I'm
not gonna tell you where I'm at because I'm gonna
have a bunch of fans here wanting to to handle
the family vacation with me, and I can't have that.
Keith key Stewart from ESPN Radio in New York joins
me here as he always does for this week's Sticking

(00:26):
Hack Reacts, where we look at everything that happened. There's
three things actually specifically that happened over the weekend and
into the week for the p G A and l
p G A, and we react to them. Uh. Keith,
First of all, good to see you, Thanks for joining.
Pleasure to be with you this fine Monday lunchtime. Adam awesome.
So number one first reaction Rory McElroy wins his twentie

(00:50):
p G A event of his career uh C J
Cup at the Summit in Las Vegas. Rory and Morikawa
and Ricky foul are a name that we had forgotten
for a bit in the in the in the hunt
here on the final day yesterday and uh, in a
good back nine, anything could have happened. There was only

(01:10):
a couple of strokes in between all of them. More
Cow fire to sixty two and still somehow lost by
a shot. Nonetheless, Rory comes out, gets his victory, his twenty.
That's a milestone victory. Your reaction, I thought Lee Jansen
won that tournament. Didn't you watch the coverage? Right? I
thought it was Lee Jansen in the playoff? What are

(01:31):
you talking about Rory mclroy and Ricky Fowler. I mean,
those are the biggest names in golf. Why wouldn't they
be on TV because we were watching The Cowboy and
Lee Jansen duel it out in a playoff in the
senior Tour. That's why Oh, PGA Tour Champions was on. Yes, Wait,
didn't didn't you say that More cow was in the
process of shooting sixty two, Rory was in the process

(01:53):
of winning is PA Tour title. These all these are facts, yes,
But I want to I want to see a two
time nineteen nineties major winner. I would much other see
him in The Cowboy, Miguel and how in Menace than
I would to see the top three fighting it out
in the PGA Tour, So luckily I got my wish yesterday.
Most people didn't, however, on golf Twitter, as they were

(02:16):
incensed as they typically are week after week about some
sort of bone head coverage moved from the golf channel NBC.
The p G A doesn't matter. They can't catch a break,
they can't make the right decision. They are in the
in the pits of the earth right now for most
golf fans because they don't show actual golf that people
care about. Keith. That's my reaction to that. Does anybody

(02:36):
care that Rory even one? Are we just gonna talk
about the ratings and the brass a the p G A. Keith,
you fired me up here on vacation. Come on, baby.
What kills me is that they always do that stupid
playing through things where they have a commercial and then
they also have like the split screen, or when they're
doing Ryder Cup coverage, they've got the seventh hole in
the fourth hole, they get to like key pots going on, right,

(02:57):
They couldn't do that. Yesterday. You got r Ry McElroy
played golf against Ricky Fowler in the final group. You've
got Lee Jansen. Okay, he's a US Open winner. You
got him out there, fire and sticks, you got Lee Jansen.
All right, Rory one is twentieth. We're all very excited
it thumbs up? What the hell's the reaction here, Keith?

(03:18):
What is the reaction? I mean, are we are we
reacting to let's let's let's ask, let's just ask the
actual question. Are we reacting today to Rory winning his
twentie and his second of the calendar year, or the
p G A year is first, or the the wrap
around season who cares? Or are we reacting to the
fact that Golf Channel and the p G A messed
up yet again and gave coverage of something that nobody

(03:41):
really cared about yesterday afternoon. Well, I don't want to
put words in your mouth, but it's pretty obvious what
we've been discussing up until this point. So I'm gonna
give it. I'm gonna give the coverage of thumb down,
but I'm gonna give Rory McElroy two thumbs up. Um
to sum it up. And the reason I give it
two thumbs up is that the press conference following with
Kia Dixon when he said, hey, he goes, I just
gotta start being me more. You know, I gotta keep

(04:03):
it simple. I gotta simplify things. You look at his camp,
He's brought in Bob Rotella, you know, the head game
specialist in golf. He has Brad Faxson fixing his putting.
Obviously that works paid off. He was number one and
putting this week. And you know, certainly he's got Pete
Cowen working on his golf swing. So two big thumbs
up for Rory. Obviously a very emotional moment with that
interview at the end of the Ryder Cup, and it

(04:25):
seems like, you know what, he's had some time to
meditate and you know, um look inside himself and obviously
all things point towards a big year for Rory because, uh,
on the weekend, six sixty six is pretty impressive, and
yesterday he looked like he could have gone as deep
as he wanted to go. But it you know, once
he made that eagle on fourteen, he was pretty much

(04:46):
on cruise control. So he's back in the top ten
in the world. He's now eighth, down from fourteenth. That's
his twentieth career in lifetime PGA Tour member. No worries man,
let's roll. There's a good chance. Rory also took the
last couple of weeks since the writer to catch up
on coursework by stick and hack and get himself some
lessons and came out firing over the weekend. So that

(05:06):
is a potential um. That's a shameless plug and I
don't care, Keith. That's what I do. That's my literal job.
Reaction number two. J R. Smith He's a two time
NBA champion and now apparently a freshman golfer at North Carolina.
For those of you who aren't following that story, Keith,
it is the heartwarming story of the year. It's also

(05:27):
confusing for some to think of a two time NBA
champion going back to his freshman year and playing collegiate golf.
This is Is Is this Michael Jordan all over again? Or
is this something bigger? It's definitely something bigger. And there's
a little bit of backstore here. You know, Jerry Smith's
from New Jersey. You know where I live and where
I'm from. He got drafted straight out of high school
in two thousand and four, so it's not like he

(05:49):
went to college and used any of his eligibility. So
when he got done playing basketball after I think it
was eighteen seasons or something like that and two NBA titles,
roughly ninety million in career earnings. Uh. He decided he
wanted to go back to school. So he's going to
North Carolina A and T. And he wants to be
a Division one college golfer. And when this story first
broke over the summer, I thought, like Man j. R.

(06:11):
Smith was kind of a knucklehead in the NBA at times,
you know, he spoke out about a lot of different things,
and uh um, you know, I don't know that he
was quite like Kyrie and the flat earth theory, but
you know, at times, you know he was. He was
definitely out there and some of the things he was doing.
But I tell you, I cover this story every week
on the Pro Show on my radio show because it
is the greatest story. At first, I was covering it

(06:33):
almost to mock it. But I'm telling you weekend and
week out. If you follow him on Twitter, he engages
with the other students at the university. He engages with everybody.
He's super positive he's going to class. I mean, you're right,
I don't have enough thumbs to put up in order
to tell you that this is just one of the
great stories. I mean, imagine this parallel Adam October eleventh,

(06:55):
two thousand and twenty. He's in the bubble and he
wins the NBA Championship with the l A. A Akers.
October eleventh, two thousand twenty one. He's on the bus
going for thirty six holes in the first day of
his collegiate tournament. UM down there at the Elon Invitational
last week. Unbelievable, and the guy played his heart out.
Now did he play as good as you wanted to know?

(07:17):
He shot eighty three, seventy eight, and then the next
day that came back tournament he shoots seventy nine. But
his first ever collegiate tournament. I mean, this guy is
gonna shoot par or better at some point because if
you look at the video of his golf swing, he
over the three rounds, I think he made four birdies.
I mean, the guy can play golf. And you know there,
I just think it's such a cool story about you know,

(07:39):
there's this huge surgeon golf and it's coming from all
different angles. There's more women, there's more juniors, there's more
seniors playing, there's more you know, cats and dogs playing.
Everybody's playing. But to get a guy who's you know,
worth a hundred million dollars to come out and go
to school to play, I just think it's super positive
and I can't promote it enough. I love the story

(07:59):
and this, this isn't a he's not going to be
He's not trying to become pro here. He's not. He's
not doing what some of the ex athletes have done
where they've come in and they've tried to hit the
pro ranks because an eight, three, seventy eight or whatever
isn't isn't pro material. It's it's uh, it's sticking hack
material for sure, but it's not pro material. But as
if as a first collegiate golfer, that's what you're anticipating expecting.

(08:23):
But more importantly, he's just showing how golf is is
as important today in his life as as it has
been over the last twenty years, where he couldn't play
as much as he wanted to in a in a
competitive sense, but golf is still uh in in his blood.
And so he's like, Hey, I'm gonna go get a
school and I'm gonna go play golf. I'm gonna do
something fun. But imagine being on that on that bus

(08:43):
as a as a sophomore or junior senior of of
North Carolina, A and A and T and UH look
over and so say, hey, what what was it like
to to win NBA Championships? Also your fifth on the
roster here of the of the squad. I think it's awesome. Keith.
You're right. It is a great story. If you don't
know it, look it up and UH and start to

(09:04):
follow it. Follow him on Twitter because he is UH.
He's it's a really really awesome, heartwarming story and and
just shows the love for golf that everybody has, no
matter their situation in life. Let's move to reaction number three, Keith,
and that is your boy Phil Mickelson making some waves
last week. UM after he won uh a I think

(09:25):
add percent of all of his champions Tour events that
he's participated in. Uh. He came out last week with
a new ruling from the U s g A saying
that they would UH limit the length of the driver
shaft to UH forty six inches. If I have that right,
that's a miracle, Keith. Do I have that right? Well? Someone,
it's it's not just the driver, but the longest club

(09:47):
in your bag excluding the potter can be forty six inches.
So if you wanted to have like a fifty inch
three would or you're Bryson and you wanted like a
seventy inch pitching wedge, that you can't do that anymore,
all right? Well, and and that affects a very me
too amount of people on the earth that they that
they even care about that. However, it did affect Phil,
and it affected Phil so much to where he I

(10:08):
don't want to say threatened, but he intimated that he
might just go over to to another league. If this
is how they're gonna run their run their shop, I'll
just take my business elsewhere. Uh am I am I
spot on with that? Or is that over exaggeration? No, actually,
I don't think it's an over exaggeration. Which is UM
very unique moment for you, uh interestingly enough. But you know,

(10:31):
two big thumbs down for Phil on this reaction. Um,
probably two big thumbs down for the U S. G.
A and R and A because they're trying to make
news about something that really isn't news it it doesn't
really affect anyone in golf. Um, you know, more along
the lines just creates negative conversations around the game, and
you know Rory winning, um Lee Jansen winning of course

(10:52):
j R. Smith's playing golf. These are all great positive stories,
Ricky Fowler's come back. Um there's all sorts of positivity
around the game, and this is just kind of an
on sense rule. I think Phil's just using it as
a stepping stone because the rumors are around the golf
media ranks is that you know, Phil's being more than
heavily recruited with like a nine digit number to go

(11:12):
to the PGL, that Premier Golf League, and uh if
he does that, who he will recruit and how that
will go. Um So, I think he's just trying to
distance himself a little bit and say, you know, like, hey,
you know, I just don't agree with you guys. So
I'm gonna go take my you know, my golf clubs
and go play elsewhere. Um So, with all the positivity
that's going on in the game, this is kind of

(11:33):
a negative story. So I'm I'm thumbs down on it
out him. Yeah, me too, thumbs down all the way around,
thumbs down that And I think you're right, it's a
good point. They're trying to make news of it. UM
and that there's this massive rule change that will affect people.
And then when you really dig into it, I mean
I I wouldn't. My driver length could be fort or
it could be nine inches. I have absolutely no idea.
I know that it goes right. I know that that's

(11:54):
a fact um, but I'm not sure that the length
of the of of the actual clubs themselves. However, I
think Phil also um has coming out saying he's gonna
move to PGL, which he's really one of the only
or he could move to PGL UM the Premier Golf League,
And if you don't know much about that, look it up.
It's it's a it's a crazy new kind of XFL

(12:15):
type league that's trying to to bring players over um
in in a very unique sense and take away from
the p G a um and and the PGA Tour
rather uh specifically. So I think it is Phil be
and Phil a little bit. I think he's making I mean,
he's fifty one. What are we doing here? Just continue
to play golf. Continue when your tournaments, UH, make great videos,

(12:36):
make great TikTok's, give thumbs up and and uh right
off in the sunset. As as any professional player golfer
of your stature should and um, hopefully he takes my
advice and and changes his tune, which I'm sure he's
listening and says, oh, my fault, adam, my apologies. You're
You're right, I should I should look at that, Keith Stewart,
Is there any other reaction, any bonus reacts here on

(12:56):
a Monday, Because I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm
in an undisclosed locations them. We're deep in the in
a forest. I have not had my pulse on life
here the last couple of days. Hopefully you are keeping
your your your ear to the grindstone there and and
working us out with all of our our golf news. Yes, yeah,
I'm waiting for Burt Reynolds to walk up in the
background there for sure. That's but that happens. We've got

(13:19):
bigger issues, I think you do. But with all that
being said, shameless plug number two, I think j R.
Smith needs to attend our academy tomorrow that that I'm hosting,
and we're gonna talk a little bit about the short game.
So folks, if you're listening to this, uh, you know,
I'm not all just good looks. And the voice. I
am a PGA professional and we're gonna do a little
teaching tomorrow. We're gonna have a ton of fun, so

(13:39):
tune in for that for sure, and of course, as
always Adam, I've enjoyed the grub for this Monday lunch.
Keith Story from ESPN Radio New York and host of
the Pro Show as well as host of tomorrow's coursework.
