Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
What is up straight Fire, fam, It's me Jason McIntyre,
Straight Fire for Wednesday, November twentieth. Oh boy, oh boy,
do we got a good show today for you? Oh
my goodness. Obviously the Jets, because yesterday was Tuesday. Something happened.
We'll get to that later, but we got to start
with college football. They just announced the twelve team playoff update,

(00:35):
and I think we're gonna have a guest on tomorrow
to dive deep into it. I'll just give you the overview.
Oregon is still number one after the narrow win over Wisconsin.
Texas is too, although there's a lot of negativity toward
the Longhorns. They don't have any good wins. They got
stomped out in their toughest game against Georgia at home.
Number three is Miami and number four is Boise State.

(00:58):
I think many would agree that Ohio State, which is
at five because it lost to Oregon, is probably the
best or second best team in the country. Again, on
a neutral field, Ohio State would be favored over Oregon.
Ohio State was favored in Oregon. Obviously. I know gambling
lines don't determined games but that's where we are with that.

(01:18):
Checking in At six's Penn State, which does not have
a great win. Ohio State would play number twelve BYU
in Columbus. Now note the locations of these first round
games in Columbus, Ohio. That would be in December. Okay,
so we're looking on like twenty degrees. Penn State as
the sixth seed would host Georgia in State College. That's

(01:40):
another twenty degree kind of game outdoors freezing in December.
Then at seven you have Indiana, which is kind of temporary,
right They got the big game against Ohio State this weekend.
They are thirteen point dogs in that one. Yeah, tough one.
So currently Indiana would host Ole Miss in Bloomington, Bloomington,
Indiana in dece Yeah, I'm gonna go with cold you

(02:01):
said thinkings trend here. And then eight would be Notre
Dame hosting Alabama in South Bend. And yes, South Bend
will be chilly in December. So we got four games
in the north cold weather December. None of this dome action,
none of this West Coast war weather stuff. I don't
mind watching those games. I just know, just like Pittsburgh

(02:24):
Baltimore in the NFL this past weekend, cold game outside
slobbery knocker. And then you go to Sunday Night football
Bengals Chargers indoors West Coast High scoring thirty four to
twenty seven thriller. Both games were close, but and listen,
I know there's a large segment of football population who
loves these tough, cold weather games where defense reigns. But

(02:47):
they're fine, sure, give me offense. Please give me war
weather offense, no elements. That's what I want for my
big games, right. I much prefer easy on the eyes, scoring,
fun excitement. I know I like defense too. List to
trust me in men's basketball, and yes, I kind of
got to mention the men's basketball team in every podcast.

(03:08):
I consider myself a defensive guy. I can no longer
guard ones, but I could try to guard toos or
I could guard ones for brief moments. But yeah, defense
is like that's one of my calling cards, defensive shooting.
So yeah, I get it. Defense matters. But for a viewer,
give me offense indoors. Anyways, I don't have much objection.
Much will be sorted out this weekend with Indiana, Ohio State.

(03:30):
I don't think Texas is going anywhere. Tennessee and SMU
are the last two out.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Now let's move to the NBA. So for starters, we'll
go with Celtics Calves. The Calves were fifteen or oh.
They go to Boston, they lose, but cover thanks to
a huge third quarter comeback. Celtics won twenty calves one
seventeen calves, amazing win streak to start the seasons over
Boston dropped twenty two to three pointers twenty two. Jason

(04:09):
Tatum hit six. He had thirty three, twelve and seven.
I mean Jason Tatum right now, and I know who
cares fourteen to fifteen games in Jason Tatum's the MVP
elite nicoloogicch has been great. Tatum's your MVP early Okay,
He's been tremendous. You know, Tatum's my guy. I'm a
big Jason Tatum fan. I did watch most of that game.
I thought it was good. Donovan Mitchell, I mean, thirty

(04:30):
five points on twenty nine shots, relentless, he just would
not stop. Now, the Calves were down three of their wings,
so they didn't have a lot of defense on the wings,
which is partially why Tatum went bananas. But overall, I
think this is there's something to build on here for
Cleveland because even though Garland was awful three for twenty one,

(04:52):
I thought they got great minutes out of Mobiley and
I thought he played fine alongside Jared Allen. It was
not a massive liability obviously. You know you can't have
Gary's Garland shoot three for twenty one and expect to
beat the Celtics on the road. You know that's just
not happening. But it was a fun game. The bigger
story in the NBA, and this is I know, NBA
regular season, Who cares? Yes, I did bet on the
Celtics that they did not cover. It was stupid. I

(05:15):
just felt like, let me get some action on the
game to pize some money whatever. But the big story
is usually in the NBA what happens off the court.
So after what was it on Monday night? So the
Sixers lose to fall to two and eleven, and after
the loss to Miami where Joel Embiid did not play okay,

(05:35):
by the way Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxie
have yet to play a game together. Okay, so after
that loss, Kyle Lowry called for a team meeting, right
and the team got together. Everybody was in the room
and there was some calling out. The biggest call out
was Tyrese Maxey, who's injured and who's been in the
league for five minutes, challenged Joel Embiid to be on

(06:00):
time to team activities. Oh my gosh, calling out the
former MVP for being late to everything and saying it
impacts the locker room, the players, the staff. Whoa wow
shout out to Tyrese Maxey. I mean, listen, may I've
liked Tyrese Maxey. I think he's got a bright future

(06:21):
in this league. I did not know he had the
kahonas to call out Joel Embiid, who the franchise has
bent over backwards for given him everything he's wanted, and
now he's getting called out by a young twenty four
year old. I love that for MAXI now, I'll get
to more on this story in a second and where
the sources are likely coming from. But nobody is saying

(06:46):
that Tyrese MAXI doesn't like Embiid. He just saw some
stuff and called him out. According to the story, players
told Sixers coach Nick Nurse they wanted to be coach harder,
and the coach has said, okay, we want you guys
to practice with purpose and attention to detail. Now, Joel Embiid,
according to the story on ESPN, did not really push back.

(07:07):
He just said he is sometimes confused about what the
Sixers are attempting to execute on the court. Now, I'm
sure at that point somebody said, what do you mean confused?
You're never on the court. But apparently the folks are
just disappointed with Embiid right now in that locker room
because even on Monday, right, so he was ill. Nobody

(07:28):
saw him throughout the day until warmups, right, nobody. It
was like, what the hell's going on? And accountability matters guys.
And Daryl Morey, who this podcast knows, and I'll never
I think I told the Darryl Mory story. So when
I was living in Pennsylvania, I had access to Sixers games.

(07:50):
I actually was like in a media basketball game in Philly,
you know, because I would go to some games and
be in the media room and whatever This is when
I had the website way pre Fox and Darryl Moury
was coming to town with the Rockets and I got
his number from somebody and I was like, hey, Darryl,
you know I'd love to do a story on this,

(08:10):
that and the other. You know, I will. I'll be
at the game, you know, can we meet up before
or after? And he's like, sure, you know, no problem,
let's do it. And then before the game he's like, oh,
I can't do it before the game, let's talk after.
And then of course his team loses to the Sixers.
And after the game, Daryl Morey goes to me, and
you know, I'm trying to find him. He's nowhere to

(08:31):
be found. I guess he was upset or whatever. But
I kind of got got brushed off, shall we say,
by Darrel Mory. But I have I have sent him
texts since then. This was many moons ago, folks. This
is I mean, I've been in La now Holy Cow
got here in twenty sixteenth or over eight years, so
this had to be ten years ago. And Morey has
not responded, shall we say to my text I've listened.

(08:52):
I'm you guys, don't me. I'm gonna call people out
when they deserve it, and I'll give them I'll give
them their flowers when they deserve it as well. But
I've never really understood Maury's I gotta have a superstar,
that's how you win. Like, yes, on one level, I
get that, but not all superstars are created equal. And
to bend over backwards for Embiid and all the leeway
they've given him and for him to now pull this

(09:15):
after they get Paul George like, it's got to piss
off everybody in the building. Think about how Paul George feels.
He left the Kawhi situation where Kawhi was like, yeah,
I'm good to go. Not today, I don't know. I
do not feel great. And now you're gonna deal with
that with Joel Embiid and the Sixers are two and eleven.
This is bad And I don't really know how you

(09:36):
fix this other than saying Joel Embiid suck it up
and play. But what if he's not good to go
and then he gets injured and he's out for two months.
I again, it is a wacky situation. I give major
props to Tyrese Maxi. As a matter of fact, He's
now one of my favorite players in the East, simply
because he called out Joel Embiid, which is sometimes needed.

(09:56):
And this is a team again two and eleven. Their
preseason win total was fifty one and a half. A
lot of people had this team in the Eastern Conference
finals NBA Finals. You remember adding Paul George to embid
In Maxie, You've got a rising star at guard. You
still got one of the better two way players in

(10:17):
the league. And Paul George. I know you may not
like him, but that's the truth. He's one of the
better two way players. And you've got a former MVP
and Joel Embiid who averaged I think a point a
minute last season when he was playing in healthy and
so it's like, I mean, Joel Embiid, he's on knee
injury management, Okay. He then shoves a reporter who writes

(10:39):
some dumb column call. You know that was inappropriate. Paul
George is banged up. Now Maxie's banged up. I mean, folks,
I'm kind of watching him play a slow motion car
crash is what it feels like in Philly, And listen,
I don't want to be like some kind of mister
negative where it's like, oh, Jason, all you do it's negativity.
You hate this. This guy stays blah blah. This is

(11:01):
the reality of what's going on. The seventy Sixers are
terrible right now. Now the league is fun, but these
are the kind of stories that get legs and people
just can't. They can't get it off of it because
there's no easy fix here. And obviously people are starting
to speculate, Oh yeah, just trade em Bead for Giannis, Like,
come on, nobody wants to oil Abiad. There's no way.

(11:22):
I don't care how good he is. He's damaged goods.
He's got a I think he'd probably be like a
fifteen year old BMW with one hundred thousand miles on
it that you're like, ooh, you're gonna need a new
carburetor soon. This is just a weekend car. I can't
drive this every day in La traffic.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
You know.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
That's one of those deals with Joel Embid in his body,
and so things are starting to fall apart for the Sixers. Now. Listen,
there's plenty of time for them to turn it around again.
It's early in the season. This is an eighty two
gay marathon. All you gotta do is basically get to
the playoffs and avoid the Celtics. I don't think think

(12:00):
the Sixers would be afraid of the Knicks, although the
Knicks beat them last year and I think the Knicks
are built to beat them again this year. But I
think you as long as you avoid the Celtics, you're
gonna have a chance. Right. I don't Milwaukee has a
chance to turn it around, but their roster doesn't scare anybody.
The Caves are interesting, but let's see how they react
to this the loss after the fifteen game win streak.
I don't know, man, NBA is starting to get exciting. Yeah,

(12:22):
college football getting exciting, and then you've got my New
York Jets. Who I guess we got to do this.

Speaker 1 (12:29):

Speaker 2 (12:42):
I'm just so sick of talking about the Jets. I'm
sorry I had to save them for the end because
I don't want to give them too much airtime. It's
just such an embarrassment this franchise. I don't know how
I got stuck rooting for these losers. It's just like,
you know, you're a kid, You're like, I don't want
to root for the Washington Redskins. Everybody likes them. I
want to for the Jets because I'm from New York
and at the time they were terrible. I'm almost certain

(13:05):
they went one in fifteen one year and their only
win was against Washington. I think it was three to nothing.
I have to look it up, but I was a
Jets fan, locked in. You know, through all the years,
Chad Pennington, Ken O'Brien, there were some really dark days.
The Curtis Martin had a good run, Mark Sanchez obviously
the two years. The last decade has just been a

(13:25):
total wasteland. And what went down yesterday with Joe Douglas
just pathetic. You know, Aaron Rodgers has another crap game,
and by the way, I have chronicled it, if you
look at some Sundays where Aaron Rodgers has had a
bad game. The Jets overreacted two days later and did
something fire. Robert Sala trade for DeVante Adams. Now it's

(13:47):
fire the GM. Well. According to The Athletic, this story
dropped late last night. Oh my gosh, Woody Johnson is
officially in that category with Tepper in Carolina and the
guy in Cleveland worst owners in the NFL. Are you
this paragraph right here is? I mean, it's stunning. So.

(14:12):
Woody Johnson is been owner of the Jets for a
long time, and apparently what broke him was the ten
to nine loss to the Broncos earlier this season. So,
according to The Athletic, the day after they lost, Woody
Johnson called in a bunch of the coaches Robert Sala
was still on staff, Hackett and the ownership guys like

(14:37):
Christopher Johnson and a couple other dudes. And during the meeting,
Woody Johnson suggested to the coaches that they bench Aaron
Rodgers in favor of Tyrod Taylor because he felt Rogers'
performance was holding the team back. Now, Aaron Rodgers was
not good at all in the rain against Denver. Bo
Nicks was awful. I believe he threw for I'll check

(14:58):
the box score. I think it was sixty yards. Rogers
was twenty four of forty two for two twenty five
fifty seven percent completion s. He was a non factor,
couldn't really get them in good enough range to kick
a field goal, and of course the kicker missed it.
Bo Nicks, yes, twelve to twenty five for sixty yards.
I mean essentially the Jets defense before that was at

(15:20):
the time before they quit, they held the Broncos to
one hundred and eighty six yards. Denver could do nothing
three point three yards per play. But Aaron Rodgers, the
Hall of Famer, okay, couldn't do anything either. The Jets
three point five yards per play. They were overto in
the red zone. Denver converted a touchdown. Anyway, Jets lose,
So Woody Johnson says to everybody, we got a bench
Aaron Rodgers. According to The Athletic, the coaches and Joe

(15:42):
Douglass stunned at the suggestion, talked him out of it,
and convinced the owner to stay the course, and that
benching Rogers four games end of the season would not
sit well with the locker room. The coaches felt it
would embarrass Rodgers. The idea of benching a Hall of
Famer sounded so absurd that one coach asked whether the
old was serious. Multiple sources from that meeting believed he was.

(16:04):
Now Tuesday, meaning yesterday, they fired Joe Douglas. Tuesday night,
a massive story is dumped on The Athletic with story
after story about the worst owner in the NFL, Woody Johnson,
and meddling four games into the season he wanted to
bench Aaron Rodgers. That stuns me given how much we

(16:27):
thought Rogers was connected to Woody Johnson. Now it gets
worse because and I'm looking at yeah. A week after
that game is the faithful Solid game where they had
to go to London. They lose, Rogers again doesn't deliver,
and Woody Johnson unilaterally fired Robert Sala. And this story

(16:49):
goes on to I mean, it's listen, you fire the GM,
you strip all the power from him in the last
you know, ten months. Of course, he's sitting on a
bunch of stuff he's gonna load to the media. So
there's talk about Bryce Huff who the Jets screwed up
his contract situation and they let him go to the Eagles. Well,
according to according to The Athletic, Douglas had a contract

(17:13):
extension offer he was ready to give and Woody Johnson said, no,
we're not doing that. We're not doing any moves involving
new money to players on the roster. So Joe Douglas
thought he was doing his job. Oh, we'll keep Bryce
Uf And then of course Douglas gets hammered in the media.
Oh they lost Bryce Huff for nothing and they got
Hassan Reddick. What a disaster that is. According to the story,

(17:34):
Joe Douglas had an offer to Reddick and Woody Johnson
vetoed it and was like, no, we're not doing that.
So his hands were tied. Woody Johnson just totally according
to there's a quote in here, they're holding him hostage,
like they fired his Apparently he was like one of
his best friends was Rex Hogan, he was the assistant GM.

(17:57):
Their families were close. Woody Johnson made Joe Douglass fire.
M It doesn't make sense why, but I guess he
just wanted to neuter. And now apparently Douglas was close
to locking down or trade for Jerry Judy. They were
gonna move off Allen Lazard and a Day two draft
pick for Jerry Judy, and then they go to Woody
Johnson and Woody Johnson says, Nope, we're not doing it.

(18:18):
Woody Johnson apparently is the one who pushed for Tyron
Smith the old offensive tackle, and Mike Williams the old receiver.
Tyron Smith had a bad season. He's now injured. Mike
Williams has gone into Pittsburgh. Folks, this is as bad
as it gets, you know, I want to say this
is rock bottom, but I'm sure it's gonna get worse,

(18:38):
like when everybody rejects them. This idea that your owners
can call a meeting and say we've got to bench
the starting quarterback, That's not how it works. Again, I've
never been in an NFL locker room in any working
capacity outside of being a media member, like working for
the organization. But this idea that the owner is going

(19:02):
to walk in and try to call the shot, that's
not how things work. The owner hires people to call
the shots. Okay, And I could reference the soccer team.
I think I've told the story multiple times. The soccer
team my own. You know, we're in the ownership group.
The coach comes, it was a little combative with us.
This is a couple of years over a year ago,
and I mean, I'm just stunned there, like, oh, okay,

(19:24):
and then the coach was gone within a week. But
you don't want your coaches meddling in the locker room.
The coach from the mexicanotography came to meet us for
drinks after a bad loss, and you know, he was
very defensive and it was just very awkward. But I
can only assume what life was like for Salah and

(19:44):
Joe Douglas. When you get called into a meeting and
the owner says, we got a bench Aaron Rodgers, What bro,
You're not a football guy. Let the people you hired
do their job. And you know, I got to give
a Joe Douglas a shout out here. I applaud him
for saving up all this a and then dumping it
and showing the world how inept and clueless. Now the

(20:06):
kicker is Sunday the Jets bench starting safety Tony Adams
at the behest of Woody Johnson. How is the owner
betching a safety? What now? It goes on to say,
and this I don't want to get political, but this
is a reality member. Donald Trump had appointed Woody Johnson

(20:26):
to an ambassadorship during his last tenure. One thing Trump
does is watch TV and listen to people. He reads
a lot. He loves seeing his name Woody Johnson clearly
must be reading fans media saying such and such about
Tony Adams, and then the owner coming in and trying
and then benching a starting safety. That's insanity. According to

(20:49):
the story, Johnson also wanted the Jets to practice during
your bye week, which didn't go over well with some
of the locker room leaders, like are you kidding me?
And then here we go. The only positive in this
entire story comes on the Aaron Rodgers front, and increasingly
it sounds like Woody Johnson does not want Aaron Rodgers back.

(21:13):
Now it's still early, we'll see what happens. I think
that's the only positive here. You get a fresh start,
you get a new GM, a new coach, a new quarterback.
The problem is who's running this is just gonna be
Woody Johnson trying to call the shots. I wonder if
Woody has seen his buddy Trump gain power and just
do things unilaterally. I'm creating this new task force. I'm

(21:34):
gonna pick Elon and I'm gonna pick Vivek, and they're gonna,
of course, we're gonna have two people run one organization.
I just wonder if he's seeing that and he's operating
that playbook, and he's trying to call all the shots,
and it's like, oh boy, it's just depressing. And listen,
I don't really care about the Jets on a front
like that. I just hate that I've invested many football

(21:57):
seasons over the last what thirty years rooting for this
team for what? Why? What am I doing? The owner's
totally clueless. I mean, you guys don't know how many
times I've thought to myself, oh my gosh, man, is
there a world where I could get a group together
and we could buy the Jets. You know, I don't
see it happening. I would love it, but I mean,

(22:21):
if the only thing good that comes out of this
is Rogers doesn't come back, I'll take it. But they
got it. They need like a culture shift. They need
somebody like a Belichick. It's not gonna happen to come
in and say we're giving you total autonomy. I Woody
Johnson will step aside. You do whatever you want. If
we suck, hey, it's on you. You'll get fired in
a couple of years. But from my perspective, that's the

(22:43):
only way it's gonna happen is if Rogers steps aside.
To quote the Athletic Rogers is fond of both Douglas
and Ulbrick and had been hoping for some continuity in
twenty five. It's increasingly unlikely the quarterback returns next season,
and it's believed Johnson won't want him back anyway. My gosh,
what an embarrassment. Where do we go from here? Guys?

(23:05):
I don't know, but Mike Rabel want the job? Would he?
I don't know. I mean his idea, like, let's go
get Ben Johnson gifts? He come on, you think he's
coming to this dumpster fire? What does he know about
building culture? In a philosophy? They're an embarrassment. The good
news is at least we don't have to talk about
him much longer, because you know, for the next month
and a half they're going to be irrelevant. Anyways, that's

(23:27):
all for today. I'll try not to get as fired
up tomorrow, although tomorrow's guest is a Jets fan too.
We'll talk to you then,
