On today’s episode, Jason discusses the New York Yankees' thrilling Game 3 comeback win over the Toronto Blue Jays and whether it's fair to say that Aaron Judge is becoming a top-5 player in Yankees history right before our eyes, why the acquisition of Joe Flacco feels like a quiet tank for the Cincinnati Bengals, the narrative that Shedeur Sanders still isn't guaranteed to be the QB2 in Cleveland now that Flacco is out of town, and why it's clear that the Bill Belichick Era at North Carolina is already a spectacular failure.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up Straight Fire? Sam? It's me Jason McIntyre,
Straight four year for Wednesday, October the eighth, and uh,
we got to start the podcast with the great news
that my Yankees have staved off elimination. It could just
be temporary, could be just a stay of execution, but

(00:31):
the Yankees in what was a pretty incredible rally down
six to one at home. Now, I was at a
men's league basketball game. This is to tm I here,
Robb G's gonna start cracking up. So you know, we're
the kind of family that sends out like the Christmas card, right,
so we gotta take photos for the Christmas card every

(00:51):
year because everybody looks different. Right. Kids are growing up
and I'm getting old, you know all that crap. So
we were in the Monday Night League and the wife's like,
do we want to schedule for Monday. I was like, no, no, no,
we can't. We got the men's league. Let's do Tuesday. So,
of course this was like six months ago. So what happens,
Rob They changed the men's league from Monday to not
conflict with Monday Night Football. So now the men's League's Tuesday,

(01:14):
so we had our photos shoot in the middle of
the men's league game. So I listen, I'm not gonna
this is one big one. As you guys know, when
the wife's schedules something of this importance, you gotta just
you gotta okay, Yep, I'll miss the first half of
the game. So I raced to the game. I didn't
even see that the Yanks were down six to one
at this point. I only get there like late third quarter.

(01:35):
We suffered a brutal loss in overtime, but that's neither
here or there. The Yankees were down six to one,
and I'm glad Rob I wasn't online because I can
only imagine the consternation of Yankee fans. Fire boon, pitching stinks,
blah blah blah. You know, Yankee fans jump off a
cliff every time they get oust in the postseason, and truthfully,

(01:55):
they haven't won a World Series in a while. They
rally from down six to one, and listen, I know
there's been some awesome moments of this MLBB postseason. That
Aaron Judge three run homer off the foul pole to
tie it just absolute bedlam and Yankee Stadium Jazz Chisholm
with the go ahead home run. Yankees win nine to six.

(02:15):
Now I'm an optimist. I'm the kind of person who's like,
hey man, they took the best punches. They took the
Mike Tyson punches from the Blue Jays. I mean, they
gave up twenty twenty three runs in Toronto, come home
down six to one, and still they're alive. Like, I'm
the optimist, I think the Yanks are gonna win this series.
I know that's clearly a minority opinion. I'm not gonna

(02:38):
get in the weeds of pitching matchups and how the
Yankees fair. But Rob, when I see that missed the
hero against the Red Sox, Schlitler is going for the Yanks,
I am very fired up because that kid was nailed. Now,
I don't know how you follow up that Game three
performance against Boston. If he's clutched again in the Yankees

(03:01):
force a fifth game, Oh man, that would be incredible.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yeah, that'd be the understatement of the of the century.
And I know your big stats guy, I saw the
stat on Tuesday overnight. Just to give you a context
about what the Yankees did. How impressive it was. Last
night the Yankee p in the first team in MLB
postseason history to be down by at least five runs
and in danger of being swept to come back to
win the game. Before last night, teams in that scenario

(03:26):
have been zero to thirty eight all time. Because usually
if your backs against the wall and you're down that big,
it's really really easy to just kind of fold up
the shop, close up your tent, and walk away, like, hey,
it's not our year, it's over. They got our number.
It is what it is. But to your point, credit
to Aaron Judge, who in this series, again it's still

(03:48):
be updated in the overnight hours, I believe is batting
six thirty six in this series. Like Aaron Judge, throughout
his career, has had his reputation of not being a
great postseason performer. I think entering these playoffs his postseason
batting average was like ninety points lower than his regular
season average, which is not unusual. I guess maybe that

(04:09):
big of a drop is unusual, But for a guy
like that, you know you're going against the best of
the best of the best, you know, it's rare you
see a guy who's actually exceeding his regular season numbers
and Aaron Judge during these playoffs is having one of
those runs that people are going to talk about forever,
like for the life of his career because he already
has all the regular seas in accolades. He's got the
home run chase. You know, he's gonna he got the

(04:30):
batting title this season. He's got everything you could ask
for except the great postseason. If they can extend this series,
as you mentioned they got, they got the young kid
coming up here on and then in game four, if
they can extend this out to five, they know, even
got to win in Game five, and you look up,
it's like, man, Aaron Judge through two rounds batted four

(04:51):
to ninety with two home runs and six RBIs, and
it's like, like, what else can you say about him?
Like he's checked all the boxes, and he's really on
track as crazy as as to sound or to say,
he's on track to becoming like a top five greatest
Yankee ever. And the and the Yankees are loaded, as

(05:11):
you know with I mean.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Like you said it, so let's go top five. Obviously
all time, you got to put Ruth and Maris and
Demonsil in there, right sure, Jeter, Jeter Jeter has got
to be in there, Mariano.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
I mean, he's a closer, so it's harder. Okay, all right,
but Judge is right there. He's knocking on the door,
like Yogi Berra. You know, uh, Reggie Jackson's a lot
of credit, mister October. But his was all postseason. His
was postseason stuff. Aaron, Judge has all of these guys
in my opinion, beat you know, of that next tier
in terms of regular season accolades. All he's missing is

(05:49):
the playoff run. And he is having one of those
playoff runs right now.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Pretty oppressive. Elsewhere. The Mariners went up to one. I
gotta be honest, there was a moment Robin the Thanks
were down six to one that I would imagine major
League Baseball was like, oh boy, Seattle Toronto in the
uh in the in the conference finals, and that's like
not great. And then you have Milwaukee. Who are they

(06:16):
likely to play? Oh, well, get the Dodgers. You get
the Dodgers. That's good. But like, and I know people
hate this when I say this, but like, let's be real,
I'm probably not talking any Seattle Toronto at all. When
the Yankees playing, they you know, it's interesting we're going
to talk about it because it's the Yanks and they
have Aaron Judge. I mean, Rob, if I if I
told you close your computer, name four players on the

(06:37):
Seattle Mariners, could you do it?

Speaker 3 (06:40):
I got two?

Speaker 2 (06:40):
I got too, how Raleigh yep.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
And uh Jay Rod.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Who Okay, I'll take care nobody. This is just the reality.
They're like, listen, we can't do everything, guys. I'm told
the hockey season is starting. I don't know anything about hockey.
You just can't. And if you're like Jay Mack, come on,
you know like this, the reality is you get married,
you got kids, you got a job. You gotta go
heavy on NFL. You gotta know, like you know, I'm

(07:09):
I'm talking. We're gonna be talking backup quarterbacks here in
a second. Okay, college football, NBA's right around the corner.
All the news flash, Lebron did not retire. I'll ask
Rob if he's as angry about that as some other
people are. I personally don't care, but yeah, I just
I don't really know many Seattle Mariners. I know my
guy Glass Beagles a huge Brewers fan, so he's he's

(07:30):
texting me all as Brewers Brewers I'm like, I just
I don't know how to respond, but yeah, major League
Baseball just praying that the Yanks stay in it. Let's quickly,
let's go to uh NFL. I do want to talk
about Belichick in a moment, because my goodness, there's something
out there that's not great. But I gotta ask you.
So a big trade on Tuesday that came out of nowhere.

(07:51):
The Cleveland Browns. Remember they went into camp this summer
saying we're gonna have four quarterbacks. Oh we got four.
We believe in these guys. You know, well, they traded
Kenny Pickett, flipped him, and I flipped Joe Flacco this
week in what was bizarre in the division. Cincinnati has
seen enough of Jake Browning Zach Taylor saying no, mass no,
I'm done. I'm done, No Moss, I can't. I can't

(08:12):
deal with this guy. I mean, some people were posting
clips of Jake Browning's interceptions and it's like, you know,
to borrow phrase from uh my guy, sorry, Mark Sanchez.
Jake Browning's throwing in the defensive back meetings out there.
I mean, seriously, look at the lines. There's like three
guys that could have intercepted some of his passes, and

(08:34):
so the Bengals like, we got to get into Joe
Flacco business. So I was like, oh, okay, here's the problem.
Rom The Bengals offensive line stinks. They got Joe Burrow hurt.
Browning's under duress and now you're putting that statue Cement
shoes Flacco back there. I mean, maybe he can make
some things happen. He's got a very live arm. I'm

(08:55):
sure T Higgins owners there was there was a T
Higgins trade in our fantasy league, well in my son
and I'm kind of like the de facto commission, and
I think it was a bogus trade. It's like T
Higgins and Chris o'lave for Jordan Addison. And I'm like,
does anybody want to raise it? A I'm not gonna
be the guy too, but does anybody want to argue this?
And you know, the one guy was like, well listen,

(09:17):
T Higgins is a waste now with Jake Browning, And
I was like, do you want to revisit now? They
got flat though, They're like not really, but yeah, like
T Higgins is a non factor. Jamar Chase put up
huge numbers in garbage time against the Lions. I don't
I personally don't think Flak is going to do much.
Rob We'll talk about the Browns angle in a sec.
But for the Bengals, do you think this even he
I don't think they're a playoff team this year. I
don't think they can do it.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
No, I don't think they're a playoff team, but it's
definitely an upgrade over Jake Browning. I mean, we don't
talk a lot about Jake Browning for obvious reasons. At
less they were winning, we're not going to talk about him.
Jake Browning through parts of four games, has eight interceptions. Okay,
in the last three games, they've been outscored one thirteen
to thirty seven. So for all of Joe Flacco's faults,
and there are plenty, he is a statue. He's old.

(10:12):
You know, he's older than me. He's just probably right
there with you. You guys probably went to prom at
the same time back in the day. And he is
not an NFL starter at this point. But he can
be an upgrade over Jake Browning. And if you are
the Cincinnati Bengals and you want to ethically tank or
quietly tank, you can be like, hey, we got Joe Flacco.

(10:36):
He's obviously better than Jake Browning. We're still going to
lose these games, but instead of losing thirty five to seven,
we'll lose them, you know, thirty five twenty two or
something like that, right, Like, we're gonna be quote unquote competitive.
So you can, like you said, ethically tank and do
something like that. But that's all this is. This is
just reshuffling the deck chairs and the Titanic Man totally agree.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Now from the Browns perspective, And by the way, I
bet two games this week. One of them is I
don't know if this is a widow maker spot, but
the Cleveland Browns just went to London with their rookie quarterback.
They come back and they play the Pittsburgh Steelers. The
Pittsburgh Steelers were off a by so essentially a brutal

(11:19):
travel spot. Teams that come back from London, I'll struggle
almost all the time. And you've got a rookie quarterback.
And now Pittsburgh's off a by and getting healthier. So
I unloaded on Pittsburgh and I think they crushed the
Browns this week. But by all accounts, the quarterback room
is going to be Dylan Gabriel one and the pantomime
quarterback Shader Sanders as the backup after the Flacco trade. Now,

(11:45):
obviously this gets a little more interesting in Cleveland. Maybe
they sell some tickets. I don't down the road, I
don't know. I do believe that the mere fact that
Shadour will be on the sideline with bring a headset
and if he has to go in you know, red zone,
is gonna be like should doers in the game, should do?
You know, It's gonna be a big deal even though
he hasn't done anything. And if he happens to do something,

(12:08):
it's gonna be it's gonna be big news on Monday.
I don't really think the Browns are being a serious
football team right now. So I'm with you. I do
believe this is a soft tank of sorts. This is
Cleveland saying, hey, we're just getting off Joe Flacco getting
a pick, We'll take it and let's trot the rookies out.

(12:29):
Let's lose the eye games, and let's battle the Jets
and Titans for the number one pick in the draft
and maybe the Saints for the number one pick in
the draft, which I don't think is a terrible idea.
The only question, Rob, is does Stefanski have enough security
or they're gonna have to blow him out if this
really if they win like three.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Games, I'll tell you I don't think they make a
move like this unless Stefanski has the support of the
front office, right because this is this is obviously a
move to the future. You gotta see what you got,
Dylan Gabriel, you know. And the fact that you can
get even a late round pick swap for Joe lack
of at this stage is great.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Yeah, And if you really.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
Want it to be competitive, you can always make a
phone call to the Giants and get James Winton back
and down like. That's available to you if you want it,
if you want it. But as far as the quarterback
depth chart, to quote Lee Corso, not so fast, my friend. Okay,
I don't know how many people saw this, but Darryl Ryder,
Brown's reporter for ninety two to three The Fan in

(13:23):
Cleveland reported on Tuesday that it is possible because this
is not official. They know the official depth chart out
as we're recording this, that rather than elevate Shador Sanders,
they could elevate Bailey Zappi to be they stop it
because unlike Shadoor, Bailey Zappi has experience playing under Kevin Stefanci,

(13:45):
so he's more, in this reporter's eyes, a more seasoned
backup role for them, and if you want to play
that game. This kind of jives with what Friend of
the Show Ian Rappaport had reported for the weekend, where
he said that the Browns wants to should or to
be successful when he's out there, and they want to
do so with the game plan that is made for

(14:07):
him to thrive. That they don't want to force him
any action. They want him to be able to According
to Rappaport quote, the expectation is that Shadur will play
at some point this season when he's ready, after he
receives a full week of practice and a game plan
that's built for him. That does not sound to me
like a guy they're expecting to be the QB two.

(14:29):
That sounds to me like they're going to keep him
in the QB three roll the emergency role running scout team,
and that way, if and when Dylan Gabriel struggles, which
he's going to he's a rookie, or he gets banged
up and knocked out of a game, he doesn't come
in right away as the backup. Instead he comes in
after a week of practice and then he gets his shot.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
I'm just saying, man, he Zapti remember he had a moment.
Was it with Belichick or he did.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
He's the one who supplanted mac Jones.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Fairly certain Bailey Zappi knocked me out of a Survivor
one year because I had the Bears going into New England.
Bears were favorites, they were rolling. It was it was
like a week nine week, I remember it was. It
was a tough one. I was having a good Survivor
and that that one freakin hurt.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Anyways, honestly, I hate the fact that we have to
keep talking about the freaking Browns. Bro me too, Like
there's so many other good stories. You know that the
eighteen Colts fans will listen to this podcast, Like, guys,
can we please do some Daniel Jones please? I'm begging you, begging.

Speaker 1 (15:32):

Speaker 2 (15:45):
We could wrap up with just some words about the
state of Bill Belichick in the New England Patriots. It
was an explosive story that dropped wr L news in
North Carolina. Divided locker room, disastrous results. Parents blame Belichick
culture for unc problems. So obviously, you know, take it

(16:08):
with a grain of salt. It's not a college football insider,
but these guys have boots on the ground in North Carolina,
and clearly this gentleman Pat Welter is plugged in. There's
a lot in here. I'm not going to steal all
of his thunder. The obvious one was, hey, when Belichick
and Lombardi brought in seventy guys in the portal, they

(16:29):
then came in feeling entitled, and the holdovers from the
Mac Brown era were like, Eh, we're losing our jobs here,
and they didn't really match the Belichick and Michael Lombardi
did nothing to get both sides together, and then they
started giving preferential treatment to the new guys. Essentially Hey,

(16:53):
their parents were allowed on the sidelines. You know, those
new recruits. A couple of them played for Belichick son
at Washington. They transferred in and their parents got referentials
because they're close to Belichick. And Bill apparently was so
caught up with Jordan Hudson and this Hulu nonsense that
he wasn't even really connected with all this stuff, and

(17:17):
he just wasn't even paying attention that while his locker
room was imploding, he thought he would come in and
coach them up and ex'es and o's, and then you realize, man,
they spent a shit ton of money and they got
nothing in the portal, and it just it was an
all around mess. Well, it gets worse. Multiple reports on
Tuesday say that that Hulu show that was gonna happen

(17:40):
they have scrapped it. I mean, we're like five weeks
into the season, guys. Now, I don't know if this
was on North Carolina side, if this was on Belichick side,
if this was Jordan Hudson not liking the direction of
the show. I mean, basically, this is all very very
bad for Bill Belichick. And I know on some level
he probably doesn't care. And Bill Belichick's like, oh care

(18:02):
the media is coming after me. Who cares? I'm worried
about football. Listen, Bill just split with Tom. He went
and won a Super Bowl. You struggled with Cam Newton.
You couldn't coach up Mac Jones after his rookie year.
Mac Jones now thriving in San fran You get blown out.
You can't get anybody to bite. Nobody is interested. They

(18:24):
Atlanta Falcons, no thanks. You have to settle for UNC
football and not even halfway through the season and you're
looking at like maybe four wins. I mean, Rob, this
is a spectacular failure. And again I yeah, I thought
this would work. I'll definitely take egg on my face here.
I thought Belichick was that good that in the lowly

(18:47):
acc he would come in and be able to cook.
And I mean they were getting destroyed by Clemson. It
was like thirty five to three, and then Clem's had
called off the dogs, and I guess they didn't want
to rub it in and finish like thirty eight ten
or something. But I mean, other than that opening you
remember that opening drive against t stee You they went
right down the field and for a touchdown. I was like,
all right, Belichick's got something we good and it has

(19:11):
been badly downhill from there for the for Belichick and
the targets.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
Yeah, it's been embarrassing. And again this is coming from
who unlike you. I always thought this was not gonna
go well. But I didn't think it was gonna go
this bad. Like even even I didn't think it was
gonna be this bad. And the worst part about it
to me is not the losing, right cause you're a
new coach, you've never coached in college before, you got
seventy new players, Like I would be shocked if you
came in he started winning right out of the gate.
Nick Saban didn't come out winning right out of the

(19:37):
gate in Alabama, right, Like. It takes time. So if
you start off the season or you finish the season,
you know, with four or five wins, but you're competitive,
you're like, hey, we're building something, we're building a culture.
We're starting from scratch. I had to tear it down
to build it back up. But it's coming. I promise
you it's coming. Based on what we're hearing in this report,
that is not the case at all. Like you touched

(19:58):
on it that there's favoritism and locker room. And according
to this report, they have a whiteboard in the football
facility that list the players who have missed workouts or
miss class. Right, And according to this report, Belichick recruited
players who repeatedly show up on this list, have suffered
no repercussions, did not have their playing time scratched at all. Right,

(20:20):
and then you have this situation where, according to this report,
we all knew that he had his buddies, like this
was Belichick and friends coming to UNC. You got his son,
he's got longtime friends, he's got Mike Lombardi and some
guys you know for a long time. You have former
or current players. Anonymous of course saying on the record,
quote the lack of experience in the coaches have is ridiculous.

(20:44):
So this is anything but the New England Patriots. We're
on a Cincinnati type thing. This is not buttoned up
in any kind of way. This is a frat house
basically for senior citizens. And it's playing itself out because
through the first five game games of the season, UNC
ranks one twenty eighth in points per game. All Right,

(21:04):
they've been outscored one twenty to thirty three against power
four teams. And this is coming from a program that
Belichick and Lombardi on the record were calling themselves the
thirty third NFL team because they were gonna have a
schematic and cultural advantage over anybody else at this level.
That's how confident they were, Like if they were more

(21:25):
glib and more accessible, this would be a bigger flameout
than Deon Sanders first season in Colorado. But the difference
was that Dion was so out in front. She do
what was so out in front everybody had an opinion
on him. Belichick is like a curmudgeon and the only
and and I don't think we had a turn. Very
few people like Mike Lombardi even before all this happened,

(21:46):
Like he's got one of those personalities that's tough to like.
So everybody, rather than focusing on all the behind the
scenes stuff, they're focusing on the girlfriend. And she's the
Yoko Ono in the situation what was going on with
Bill and Jordan Hudson and you know this documentary now
and it's like whether she's there or not, Like the
football is bad, the culture is bad, and this whole thing,

(22:06):
as you mentioned, has been a spectacular disaster.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
Yeah, it's interesting that you say this about Michael Lombardi. Okay,
so we've had him on the podcast. I know him,
we work together. I'm trying to think this was to
a twenty twenty seventeen maybe, and I would say, yes,

(22:31):
what were the word do you used to describe him?

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Prickly?

Speaker 3 (22:33):
Yes, difficult at times.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
I mean, listen, I'll say he's obviously arrogant. You know,
his last name is Lombardi, even if he's not connected
to Vince like that's a football name. He's been with
the Patriots. I'll never forget, you know, when we're in
the meeting and then the meeting adjourns and we're all
just kind of hanging out, you know, shooting the shit,
and then Lombardi turns on the corner and facetiming with
Josh McDaniels, like kind of trying to flex like, oh yeah,

(22:55):
Josh and I personally have no beef with LOBARTI We're good.
And on air, he would give me shit for not
playing in the NFL or coaching or anything, and I
would give it right back to him because you know,
I'm not going to back down. So we had like
a good back and forth and we text and stuff,
and then magically one day he just vanished. He just left,
And I don't know what happened. I never asked, you know, hey,

(23:19):
I'm low on the totem poll. I never asked, never
got an answer. I still don't know what happened. Whatever,
it doesn't matter. But he is an interesting individual, like
he has a massive ego. And I'm sure between him
and Bill, this article paints rob about parents are unhappy
they didn't sign on in North Carolina to deal with
parents of football players. Okay, that's that's like high school,

(23:43):
middle school or junior league.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
Shit.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
That's not you know, no disrespect to you know, Ryan Day.
But there's no way on earth if a parent is
unhappy with Ryan Day that he's gonna have to deal
with them. That's just not happening.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
Now.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
The best story I heard was Ohio State had a
quarterback and the coach essentially met with the after the
season with the quarterback and the father and they were like, well,
we need to guarantee playing time, and Ryan Day was like, yeah,
I'm not doing that, and the kid left. Now, he
ended up going to Syracuse to doing well. But Day
brought in the guy from Kansas State is Will Howard maybe,

(24:20):
and they won the national championship. So the stories about
dealing with parents, I'm sure Lombardi and Belichick are are standoffers, like, guys,
I'm not going to do this stuff. It is a
weird situation. I don't know, Rob, do you think he
can turn it around? Like this article obviously ain't great,
But I don't know, man, I don't Could this be

(24:44):
one and done?

Speaker 3 (24:46):
I think it should be. I think it's very clear
that what's going on at UNC is not Bill Belichick football. Like,
say what you want about his shortcomings outside of Tom
Brady and what he did with the Cleveland Browns, and
you know, even going back to his coordinator days with
the Giants, one thing you could always count on Bill
was even if he was prickly, he was difficult, whatever.

(25:06):
He's not the best judger of talent, is he could
coach him up with the best of them. He could
devise a game plan that was top notch. That he
was really buttoned up and tight and all that kind
of stuff. But he was a coach's coach. And what
we're hearing now, what we're seeing on the field is
not that it's like he doesn't want to be there,
and he's only doing it either to collect the check

(25:28):
or because his hot young girlfriend convinced them this would
be the best way to get back into the NFL.
Stay in the public spotlight, beat up on the also
rounds of the ACC, and then a year from now
you're back coaching. I don't know, the Tennessee Titans or whatever, right,
and this has not worked at all. Like, let him retire, man,
let him enjoy the twenty something girlfriend rather than just

(25:49):
being a punching bag day in and day out.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
I would say I wish Belichick luck, but I think
he's gonna need more than luck at this point. Anyways,
all right, we are back tomorrow, and I think at
that point we'll probably start segueing into NBA or maybe
later this week. I don't know. I just know that
Lebron did not retire. Most of the guys who played
in EuroBasket are resting, and you know, Jokic is still

(26:18):
doing some pretty wild things out there, and one Minyama
is as well. I'm loving these highlights except for LaMelo
Ball Robbie, I keep doing with that guy. All Right,
we'll talk to you tomorrow.
