Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up straight Fire, Bamp, It's me Jason McIntyre.
Straight Fire for Wednesday A Auguy, I must say April
August the thirteenth. Oh boy, oh boy, You're gonna love
today's podcast. Listen. The college football season kicks off basically
in two and a half weeks. August thirtieth is the

(00:33):
data Circle. Ohio State Texas is the headliner.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
But there's excuse me, there's.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
So many other good games on that on that Saturday.
You've got Alabama Florida State's kind of interesting to touchdown.
Favorite are the Tide on the road Dope Campbell. Oh
excuse me, you got LSU Clemson in Clemson. And there's

(01:01):
another good game, oh Notre Dame Miami. That's on Sunday,
August thirty first. So listen, this is just two weeks away.
Get excited and to wet your beak for college football.
We got and I call him, one of the foremost
gambling experts in college football, Brad Powers. This guy's been
doing it for a long time. You're gonna love this interview.
He has a lot of interesting takes. Let's get right
to it. Brad Powers, college football gambling guru.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
You know a guy Jason likes to think he knows
everything when it comes to sports.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
I know what sports dance wants, but for.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Everything he doesn't, he knows a guy who does.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Let's just say I know a guy who knows a
guy who knows another guy. All right, let's welcome back
to straight Fire, one of the foremost college football gambling
experts basically in America. I think I could say that
with some confidence, Brad Powers. He's been handicapping college football.
I think since like what the late eighties, perhaps, Brad,

(01:57):
how you doing man?

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah, maybe not the late eighties, following the sport since
I was a young kid, But don't age me. I
mean I'm old, not that old. Yeah, I remember. I
still think.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
My first college sports bet was in like junior year
of college. You know, you turn twenty one and you
find a couple of locals on campus who were taking
some action right right about the college age.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Right for me, I was a little younger. Ten I
bet a Notre Dame Florida state game at ten years old.
At ten years old? Yeah, points spread? Wow, do you
know if it covered or not? Or yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
No?

Speaker 3 (02:33):
No, name one owl. Right, it was a seven point
dog oo. Wow. So you got the itch early, Yeah,
I got the hitch early. Wow. Wow.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Well, nobody's gonna be talking to Florida State here anytime soon.
But Notre Dame. We could you want to start with
Notre Dame.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
You're you're a.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Huge Irish guy. Yeah, you're wearing a Texas Longhorns had
for those watching on YouTube. Oh. Nevertheless, Marcus Freeman stays,
I think he probably could have had offers from the
NFL and they quickly re upped him. Iris got what
a good team they opened. I think they're fifth in
the country something around there. The schedule is kind of favorable.
They going back to the playoff.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
I think so. Certainly you mentioned schedule being favorable, They're
gonna be favored in all twelve games. Toughest game is
gonna be Week one at Miami on that opening Sunday night.
Not an ideal place to break in and brand new
quarterback who hasn't made a start yet. We don't know
who that quarterback is going to be yet. It's an
ongoing battle between c. J. Carr and Kenny Minsche, two
talented kids. Minchi's more of a runner car more of

(03:31):
a thrower obviously with the Jeans, with his grandpa being
the Michigan coach. But I think the rest of the
team is good, even better than last year's team as
far as quality, depth, as far as talent. Obviously, they
got to gain a lot of experience playing a bunch
of top teams at the end of last season. They
weren't healthy last year. I think people forget that. It's
not like it was some magical dream run. I mean,
certainly after Northern Illinois that that was. You know, they

(03:53):
had to win out to get to the playoff. But
I mean, Jeremiah Love wasn't healthy during the playoffs. Offensive
line what was banged up. So if they stay healthy,
they're just as good, if not better than last year,
as long as the quarterback is not that big of
a downgrade.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Well, it's funny. Riley Leonard put up massive numbers at Duke.
It seemed like they were like, hey, your strength isn't throwing.
We've got a great run game and offensive line. He
powers down and does a lot of handoffs and quarterback keepers.
Do you think they go back? I mean, my buddies
seemed to think Carr is gonna win the job. Do
you have any insight or read into that one.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
I think it's gonna be CJ. Carr when it's all
said and done, just got more offside than Kenny minshef
although Minchig can run, and I think you're gonna see
both at some point this year. There might be a
package because I mean, look, Riley Leonard in short yardage
running worked. That was I mean, that was their best
offensive play last year. What was third and short? It
was a guaranteed first down with Riley running, and you're
not gonna get that this year. But I expect to

(04:50):
see both quarterbacks. I think they can be better in
the passing game. It's not like Riley Leonard, you know,
you know what was a great passer. I mean, I
would say argue is too. Best passing games was probably
the second half against Penn State and the second half
against the buck Geys, so and you saw it once
they could.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Throw the ball.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
I mean, even two great defenses couldn't really stop this
no name offense. I think they'll be better at wide receiver.
I'm pretty high. I bet and win the title, and
I am very I am a chicken. Little sky is
falling very like woe is me Notre Dame fan, but
I've only made two bets to win the title this year.
They're one of the two teams.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Well, who's the other one?

Speaker 3 (05:25):
The team that I think it's still being slept on,
the little old team called the Crimson Tide of Alabama.
I just I think that was just we can put
that off for one year. You know, de Boor had
a slip up there, but I still think he's one
of the best coaches. And I still think this, you know,
is as good as a rosters any if not the
best roster in college football, provided Tys Simpson can get

(05:47):
them a little a lot more out of the passing
game than what they got from Milroe the last couple
of years. They got two great weapons at wide receiver
and Ryan Williams. I mean, if we're just doing like
stack ranking top one hundred players NFL Draft, Alabama's got
as much as anybody. So I just think after a
year where you know, Vanderbilt beats some Oklahoma beats some
Michigan beat some all big favorites losing outright, I think

(06:08):
they're just getting slept on. And keep in mind the
bor didn't forget out of coach just for one year.
He gets his right hand man back and Ryan Rubb,
who is you know, one year at Seattle. But I
mean he's been with him throughout his career. Having him
back as the OC is gonna help. But I they're
gonna be an underdog in one game at Georgia and
they've owned Georgia and Kirby smart as a brain fart
whenever he's playing Alabama. But I I like, I bet

(06:31):
the Tide in a lot of markets winning total over
SEC to win the SEC to win the national championship.
I think ty Simpson's a sleeper in the Heisman market.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Interesting, So I'm looking at the schedule. You know, SEC
always tough. They'll beat Florida State pretty handily. W what's
is spread in that? Like fourteen at least?

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah, thirteen. I bet at Alabama in that game. I
still think there's some slight value.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
There going on the road. It Tallahassee game what he
used to be Georgia. That game is at Georgia. Weirdly,
it's early in the season. They do get a buye
before it, so there'll be a dog in that one.
But the rest of the schedule Tennessee at South Carolina LSU, Oklahoma.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
That's four ranked.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Teams in a row. Looks like October November, so that
that could be challenging.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
No, yeah, certainly, and they get a buye before LSU.
But they're gonna be favoring all those games. And if
you don't believe me, you can bet all those games
right now. And Alabama's a touchdown favorite at South Carolina,
touchdown favorite at home against LSU, a two touchdown favorite
at home with revenge against Oklahoma. So I'm not the
only one that's pretty high on Alabama. There's just you know,
certain markets where I just thought they were undervalued, whether

(07:34):
it be the futures market. I mean, they're win total.
Jason opened at eight and a half and eight and
a half went total on Alabama? Are you kidding me?
I mean, divorce should be fired if they going for
if I lose that bad.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Well wait a second, what's it up to now?

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Nine and a half?

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Yeah, nine and a half.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah, So that's interesting because I wonder and I bring
this up because I saw that Texas is the is
the number one ranked team, which seems I don't know
that's accurate. I mean, I don't know if it should
be accurate, but they are underdogs at Ohio State, the
first number one team to be an underdog in its opener,
I guess, and forever maybe all time. And I wonder

(08:09):
is Alabama's name recognition getting them favorite in a lot
of these games against the SEC because they, like you said,
they were not very good last year.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
I mean there's what we call priors kind of baked
into the some of these markets where you know, you're
not going from Alabama to South Alabama in one season,
So I mean you got to have some baked in,
whether it's recruiting classes, past performance. So I hear you
on that. But keep in mind, you know there was
a reason why the winter it was only eight and

(08:39):
a half. I mean a lot if we would have
gotten spreads then on a lot of these games, I'm
guessing that they wouldn't have been significant favorites against LSU,
against South Carolina, against Oklahoma because that just doesn't equate
to an eight and a half win total.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Yeah, that's interesting.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
I'm sure were you early on that. Do you think
you moved Oh? Yeah, by early I'm talking Jason, I
know people are like, well, we're getting there. I mean,
and I was betting stuff in January and February.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
January and February. Yeah, yeah, you have to be on it.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
They they release week one the big games. I mean
it's not like you're betting Temple and Massachusetts, but you
know the top ten to fifteen programs. They're games, win totals, futures.
It's all up in January.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Interesting portal.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
So it's what it's went into. Jason. Is when I
started this, you know, I'd bounce around. Okay, I'm gonna
do a little basketball, you know, betting and stuff like that.
I am almost all football now. It's just year round.
I mean, you got college or are you doing NFL too?
I do NFL, yeah yeah, but you're out on hoops.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
I am out on hoops. It's to I mean with
the portal with college basketball, it's just it's too much
for me.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
It's a little crazy.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
All right.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Let me hit one of those teams that So I
did a mock draft for Fox Sports after the twenty
five draft, and I had this kid Sellers from South Carolina,
very high, and people like, what are you smoking? He's
not even that good. He only has started last year
put up modest numbers, but it's more you know, six
three two forty, can run, can throw. Is South Carolina

(10:10):
like a threat in any way, shape or form with
this kid? Sellers?

Speaker 3 (10:12):
What are your thoughts on them? So I love the kids, Sellers.
I really have been high on him. I saw him
in a spring game a couple of years ago. You
just you could tell right then, prototypical could be the
you know, when it's all said and done, first pick
taken as far as the quarterbacks in the next draft.
But that being said, I don't like what's around him.
I just don't see it around skill position on offense.

(10:33):
Where I really don't see it, Jason, when you're talking
NFL draft, is they lost five guys on their defense
went in the first four rounds of the draft. They're
not Alabama, they're not Georgia, they're not Ohio State. They're
not just you know, pumping in you know, five more
draft picks. This is South Carolina. They recruit okay, but
not you know, at a top ten level. So I
don't like that. But what I really don't like go
look at the pop up their schedule October and November.

(10:55):
There's a good chance they could be an underdog in
six of the last seven games. So, I mean they
play and almost all six of those teams top twenty
ish teams, whether it's you know, the LSUS, the the Alabama's,
Oklahoma's Clemsons, you name it. I think they can get
off to a fast start. But I just I don't
think that this roster is built for playing, you know,

(11:17):
six top twenty ish teams in a seven week period. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
My draft people that are following it closely are like,
you got to check out this kid at Harbor, this
receiver South Carolina. I'm like, I'll just ask Brad. If
Brad knows anything about him, where are you going? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Yeah, yeah, So he's got the measurables. He's a track star.
He just hasn't put it on the field yet. I
mean it's there, but he's got you know, you got
to put on the helmet and the shoulder pads, and
he's he hasn't. It's been all hype and nothing on
the field yet. But there's I mean, the draft guys
like you mentioned are gonna love him, Yeah, but not

(11:54):
to be my I love production. I like production over potential.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
Yeah, it's one of those looks like Targe plays like Jay.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Is it so far, yes, so far?

Speaker 2 (12:03):
All right, all right, let's stick with the South Carolina
schedule and go to their last game against Clemson. So
we were on a trip to the Caribbean and we
happen to be sitting next to this couple at dinner
and there are diehard South Carolina fans and they're like,
we like to see some freaking Clemson.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
So loaded, Clemson is probably gonna win.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
The national championship. I guess their whole Like, you know,
if you're close to South Carolina program, everything hinges on
that Clemson game. And you know, we had Brad not Brad,
what's his name, Bruce Feldman on the pod and he's like, listen, man,
I know Clemson hasn't been great the last few years.
They're stacked. Where are you on the Tigers.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah, that's their best team since Trevor Lawrence was behind
center for them, So best team for them in five years.
But it's not like they've been terrible. I mean, they've
won forty games the last four years, average ten wins.
It's just, you know, there their boardline, you know, acc contender,
playoff contender. But there's a difference between being a playoff
contender and a national championship contender, and this year's team
is in notional championship contender. Club knicks back at quarterback

(13:02):
for another year. His best season, by far was last season,
and the big thing is he hasn't had the type
of weapons that Trevor Lawrence had around him. Now he does.
Their wide receiver room probably second to only Ohio State nationally.
As part of your stack ranking Ohio state rooms, and
they started showing themselves at the end of last year.
Clubnik had a big game against Texas. Is really good
secondary in the playoffs last year. Defensive line maybe not

(13:26):
as good as maybe the sixteen or eighteen teams that
won the national championship, but it's their best defensive line
in the last five years. Schedule sets up nicely where
they'll least be they'll be favorite in every game. Now
they got to get a you know, they went zer
and three against the SEC last year and they open
up with an SEC team called LSU. It is in
Death Valley. Well, of course it is both the places
of Death Valley, but it's at Clemson's Death Valley, and

(13:50):
the markets bet them up in this game. It opened
under a field goal is blown through a field goal.
Now they're four to four and a half point favorite
in that game. So if they win that one, that's
probably their toughest game, you know, prior of playing that
rivalry game at the end at South Carolina. South Carolina
you know, beat them last year on their home fields.
So I just they're the runaway favorite in the ACC.
I met him to win the ACC went over their
win total, which was nine and a half. I bet

(14:11):
Club Nick to win the Heisman. It's another team like Allabama,
where I got as much futures at stake on Clemson
as any team in the country.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Maybe it's because I've seen this quarterback for a few years,
but I just I haven't seen awesome. I mean, I've
seen solid and good, but I don't know that what
do I missing? Let me ask you that what am
I missing with?

Speaker 3 (14:44):
Well, I think it's it's tough for him because he's
probably getting compared to Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson, which
were you know, top two you know quarterbacks and college
football for multiple seasons in a row. He's not that.
Even though I just said I bet him to win
the Heisman. I just he put heisman esque numbers. Go
look at him, pull him up from last year. Uh

(15:04):
I again, I go back to he hasn't been he
doesn't have. Uh. You know some of the talent like
Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson had around him a wide
receiver or running back. Running back is a concern still
this year. So I think too much has been put
on his plate. And then he's also trying to live
up the expectations of those you know, two great recent
cleansing quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
Yeah, let me ask you about that. Opener gets LSU
another quarterback. Again. Maybe it's the Hey, I've already seen
this guy for a year or two. I've just he
didn't pop. But Nussmeier everybody.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Seemed oh pro and he looked. I mean, I don't know,
do you.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Think he's that good? Is he a better?

Speaker 3 (15:40):
How about this?

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Let me rephrase it. Is he a really good college
quarterback or a really good pro prospect, which are two
very different things.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
Oh, I don't know if he's either, Oh good quarter
you said really good he's a good college quarterback. I
I don't have him. You know, I didn't bet, you know,
I make a few Heisman bets. I didn't bet him
to win the Heisman. Not not because I'm way down
on him. I just, you know, Heisman is also kind
of a team award. You gotta win a bunch of
games more often than not. Besides, you know, Travis Hunter

(16:09):
and Colorado last year. But I just I don't see
it either. Turnover prone last year. He's got a better
wide receiver corps this year. His offensive line that will
take some major step back in experience. If you follow
fall camp, he's been hurt. Nus Meyer. There was, you know,
rumors that he might have torn his acl you know,
and that's not it. But he's got some knee tendonitis,

(16:31):
so he's not healthy right now. I just an LSU
program that's lost five straight season openers. I just mentioned
it dog again at Clemson. I think if you're going
to buy LSU, buy him after week one. I think
they lose that game. So yeah, you can buy low
after week one.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
I look at Nutsbayer's career and it just jumps like
Kenny Pickett, you know, like oh, he's okay, he's a backup,
he's okay, and then a huge season four thousand yards
last year. But was it just because he's, you know,
a twenty three year old quarterback. Now, I mean, the
guy's old as hell to be in college. He's not
Tyler Shook or anything. But sometimes you see these twenty three,
twenty four year old quarterbacks, it finally clicks because they're

(17:10):
throwing against the nineteen year olds.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
You know, Yeah, I agree with that. He's a coach's son,
so he's a smart kid. He just he's not a
franchise quarterback the next level. I can tell you that.
I don't know if he's good enough. Look, i mean
LSU with Jane Daniels last three games. I mean, I
just I'm not buying this LSU team with Nussmyer.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
Which brings us to Brian Kelly, a former Notre Dame coach.
If they what's the number of wins they need to
get this year to get him away from the hot seat,
And I know that sounds crazy, and I'm sure they
that's ridiculous, but they've kind of underwhelmed it. He's like
he just got kind of the vibe of sorry for
the wardops. He just feels like a dick.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
I don't know that I can tell you because I
know some people close. The word choice that was used
was when he decided to leave for LSU, that they
would they had no problem in the offices and the administration.
You know, if he had to pick up people to
help him move, there would have been enough peop volunteers.
They can put it that way. So he had run

(18:11):
his course with not only the fan base but the
people there. He's a good coach, I mean, I'm not
going to sit there and tell you he's not. He
wins football games. Does he win enough? Though? At a
place where the previous three coaches all won a national
championship by year four? Again, I'm not seeing it. So uh,
you mentioned the buyout. That's what's saving him. I mean
it was one hundred million dollars guaranteed contract and he's

(18:32):
only entering year four, so you do the math on
that ten million a year. I mean they still owe
him quite a bit. I think he's safe. He's very
I think he's safe unless it's an absolute dumpster fire,
which I don't see. He rarely can does that. Yeah,
But I do think as far as getting the fan
base off his back a little bit. He's got to
go to the playoffs this year, and right now they're
an underdog to make the playoffs. Oh, no way, get

(18:53):
winning a title. They're an underdog to make a twelve
team playoff. That's where they're at.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Yeah, I don't see that Again. Maybe I was being harsh,
Like you said, good football coach. But he's the kind
of guy this is what I've heard, like he brightens
a room by leaving it Like that's the vibe of
Brian Kelly. Just not a warm individual. But I like you,
I think he's a very good college football coach. I
wanted to go back to Clemson for a sec because

(19:18):
their schedule includes a team in the ACC that I'm into.
I'm curious how you've bet North Carolina and Belichick. I've
tried to do homework on the offense and the offensive
coordinator in the quarterback. There's not a ton out there.
But you're the oracle, so tell us what's up.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
I wish I was the oracle, but then again, I
might not be talking to you if I was. I'm
obviously choking a little bit. Yeah, but I am out.
I'm not meandering here. I'm out. I've been out since
as soon as they post in North Carolina's went Towl
at seven and a half. I bet on her one
of the first bets I made this offseason. I'm talking

(19:54):
in January. I bet that. I also bet him against
him in Week one. I think TC takes care of
busines at North Carolina in that game. I don't like, Uh,
you know, I'm not a when it came for a
majority of that whole Belichick Versus Brady debate, I was
actually on Belichick's side for a long time until I
wasn't until I got that data point with him without
them a couple of years without Brady, he's mediocre. Brady

(20:17):
wins the super Bowl, and we have I'm always talking
sample sized data points. Well, we have one hundred plus
data points with him without Brady as a quarterback, and
he's below five hundred. Coach, now, you're telling me he's
in his middle seventies. He's the oldest coach in college
football doing something he hasn't done ever before in his
career for the first time. I'm not buying it. I'm
not buying this support staff. I don't like the OC

(20:38):
that much. His son is the DC did okay at Washington,
but it's not like he's got a ton of experience.
Also not buying going out and get your starting quarterback
post spring, which is what they did, go Lopez from
South Alabama. Nice group of five starting quarterback, but again
getting that kid acclimated forget spring post spring just I
don't see it now. The only thing that's maybe bails

(20:59):
him out is what the schedule is pretty easy. I mean,
they do play clams in. I do think they lose
the TCU in the opener, but a lot. I mean,
they're just as good as a lot of these ACC teams.
But uh, generally speaking, Jason, I think it's gonna be
a dumpster fire.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
Oh so so playoff is a bit a bit rich, Okay,
way a bit rich. Yeah, yeah, I mean I think, well,
it's interesting you you tore him the shreds there with
and did a good job. I guess a potential counter is, well,
who the hell was Tom Brady? He went to Michigan
as like the seventh string guy, waited his turn, had
a good year, and then it's a sixth round pick.

(21:38):
Nobody really wanted him, and if Drew BLOODSOE doesn't go down?
What is Tom Brady's you know point?

Speaker 3 (21:44):
I mean, I I don't, I don't.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
I don't think there's any answer to that. It's why
we love sports, and everybody talks about it, like if
Bloodshow doesn't get knocked out by Moe Lewis and Brady
comes in and just absolutely crushes what were do we
ever get Tom Brady? I mean, it's really one of
the crazier mounts at point. I don't really know the answer.
Now again, Brady works in Fox with me. He's obviously
you go, he's super nice guy, but you're probably owned

(22:08):
to something that North Carrot now does. TCU games interesting?
Are they any good?

Speaker 3 (22:12):
Yeah? I think they're flying under the radar. They won
nine games last year. I think people you know that
since the you know, they played in national Championship a
couple of years ago. Ever since that lost to color
Rat on that opener the coach prime, I think everyone
threw that program in the trash, but very quietly off
a nine win season and boy better this year. And
here's the things. Sometimes you gotta just read Tea leaves

(22:34):
and go just one step further. In today's college football market,
Sonny Dikes didn't go out in the portal. So the
average number of transfers that a big twelve team took
this year twenty six, twenty six transfers, so a lot
of turmoil in that conference wide open conference. TCU took twelve,
so they took a little bit less than half of
the average number. And Sonny Dyke's they asked him, He's like,

(22:55):
I like my roster, so I like continuity, and I
just I mean, the transfer portal can work great. I mean,
at looking Forest State worked great for a couple of years,
then I mean the dumpster. I just there's too much
variance of transfer portal teams. I think the teams, as
far as I'm trusting with my bankroll, are teams like
TCU that aren't dipping into the portal too much.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
Now that's interesting because Texas Tech clearly won the transfer portal.
There's so many stories out there. I think ESPN and
the Athletic detailing how their billionaire guy was just like, hey,
well I'll write a blank check what whoever we want,
and they went shopping and got a bunch of good players.
Now it worked in the past for TCU, it worked
in the past for Indiana last year. I think SMU

(23:37):
as well. Do you think Texas Tech could surprise the
people to have you bet them?

Speaker 3 (23:43):
I have because at least the early markets did not
have that factored in as far as hey, they just
went out and got maybe the best transfer portal class
in the country. Just that I mean went to was
seven and a half. They were like the six or
seventh favorite in the Big Twelve. So yeah, but price matters.
And now if you're asking, am I bet running the
window to bet?

Speaker 1 (24:03):
Now?

Speaker 3 (24:03):
If this was the first number I saw eight and
a half with the overjuice and they're the cole favorite
to win with the conference, I wouldn't betting at now
because I don't have high confidence that it's all going
to come together and work. The quarterback is injury prone.
He's okay, Baron Morton's his name, but again it had
another procedure this offseason. I don't love that. But in

(24:23):
a conference like the Big Twelve, when you go out
and get in my opinion on paper and sec caliber
defensive line, that might be good enough to be the
difference this year. So I can see it. I just
it's not high confidences. Not one of my favorite bets
I made this offseason.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
I haven't looked deep into the Big twelve, but it
seems kind of weak. Their schedule includes Arkansas Pine Bluff
and Kent State early, they do have to go to
Utah and Arizona State.

Speaker 3 (24:50):
Is Kansas State me good this year? I Canna State.
It's one of the top teams, so they're actually underdogs
in those games against you know, Utah and Arizona State.
Utah is going to be maybe one of the most
improved teams in the country. So that one's is your quarterback?
The guy who's like thirty one years old?

Speaker 2 (25:05):
Uh? What's his cam recently?

Speaker 1 (25:08):
No?

Speaker 3 (25:08):
Yeah, we finally Jason after like four straight years of
every game. Will he play? Will he not play? What's
the injury report? No more of that. They got a
kid from New Mexico dual threat ram for a thousand
yards last year. Can throw it a little bit too,
Devin damp Year. I like him so much. He's one
of my five highsman, bets I made. What Yeah, that's

(25:29):
all good?

Speaker 2 (25:29):
Go wait a bit a hold hold time. So this
guy comes from New Mexico.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
Yeah and run. I mean he might be the best
running quarterback in the country and what I saw at
least it was one of the few spring games. As
they watched, looks improved as a passer comes over with
his offensive coordinator from New Mexico. So they're at least
I mean, he knows the system, Devin damp Year. Look,
it was a huge long shot one hundred and fifty
to one, but I mean somebody out there might agree

(25:55):
with me. He's down in like fifty to one right now.
Oh damn. Well, I mean it depends.

Speaker 2 (25:59):
You could be move the lines with your bets, you know.

Speaker 3 (26:01):
I mean, if you put I try to keep it quiet.
I bet it under different uh you know, illegal Hopefully
they're not listening. I've bet it under different names and whatnot.
But I try to keep it quiet. So it's just
not me, you know. Oh yeah, we got to move it.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
Oh wait, this guy completed fifty seven percent of his
passes in New Mexico. Yeah, well, touchdown.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
The kid's going to be good.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Well, you do watch spring games. I do.

Speaker 3 (26:23):
When I see you post that stuff, I just start
cracking up. All right.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
So, but Arizona State's the class in the Big twelve, right, yeah?

Speaker 3 (26:30):
They are? Now. I mean, typically when a team has
like their best season, and since Jake the Snake was
their quarterback almost thirty years ago, I would be like regression.
I mean, this team's gonna fall flat, you know, right
back to the middle. I don't see it. They got
as much returning production as any team in the country.
The only player of note that they lost, it's a
big loss. He was the hard and soul of their team.
Scataboo at running back, but yeah, the quarterbacks back. I

(26:52):
think people forget that they had an out one of
the best wide receivers in the Big Twelve last year,
Tyson's his name. He didn't play in the playoffs. In
the game they almost won, and speak in that game,
I think people forget Texas had to convert a fourth
and ten to put that in a second half time
Arizona State very I mean, could have won that game easily.

Speaker 1 (27:09):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
I like him. I'm buying Kenny Dillingham. I think he's
just the future superstar as a coach.

Speaker 2 (27:13):
Where's he coaching next year. Let's say they go back
to the playoff, which you know seems likely. I mean,
so Sketabo was a monster. Let's say get back to
the playoff. He could basically pick his next job, right, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
He could go to a top five job if he
wants it. Just question they have the money there. I mean,
he's a local kid, went went to Arizona State. Uh,
he wants to stay there. They gave him. You know,
he's making decent money, but he can get an extra
three four million at a big school.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
Well that way, I'm looking at his coaching career. He
was He's been at Auburn FSU or so. He's kind
of been around. But it is interesting.

Speaker 3 (27:49):
You're right, he.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
Uh, he's a local guy. I wonder if he would leave.
How about This is a bit crazy, but Jonathan Gannon
the Cardinals Arizona in the NFL, they just appoint again
and gets run. Do they go after dealing him?

Speaker 3 (28:03):
Right now? He doesn't feel like a pro guy. Maybe
later in his in his life, you know, after he's
coached maybe college ten years, maybe I could.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
See he's the coach at two years.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
He's a raw rock kid, very emotional. I think he
stays there, to be honest with you, I mean he could.
He's already talked to you know, building something like long
term there and they.

Speaker 2 (28:22):
Do they have the financial wherewithal to compete with the
big dogs like Texas Tech has the one billionaire who's
just like right never is the what's it called? The
collective at Arizona State? Are they a factor?

Speaker 3 (28:34):
They don't as of right now. But I mean, you
put it together a couple of seasons, uh like they
had last year. I mean, you should be able to
get some support and you know, a top ten market
there in Phoenix. But just to put in perspective, how
much they don't. They're up against it. They don't even
have an indoor practice facility. I saw him ten Arizona
do and have an indoor practice facility.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
That's insane.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
All right?

Speaker 3 (28:57):
A couple more real quick.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
First of all, did this oak Lahoma story the quarterback
and his how much of a loser does this person
have to be to go through three years of VENMO
payments from John Matteia I believe is his name in
the quarterback at Oklahoma to find that he as seemingly
joking saying gambling on Notre Day or whatever the game was,

(29:19):
and they lit him up and now there's like an investigation.
He says it was an inside joke. I don't know, Brad,
I'm sure you have big thoughts on this.

Speaker 3 (29:29):
It's not a mover for me. I think you should
be okay, I mean, just lie and Na we were
just joking. I mean, how are they gonna prove it?
I don't get it.

Speaker 2 (29:38):
I'm sure what about the these are like I'm assuming
just creeps on a message board thinking oh oh, I
can out like that's never gonna stop. Unfortunately, because college
football thought it's not.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
It's only gonna get worse, to be honest with you,
so it probably did gamble on it, to be honest
with you. But I to me, the market moved a
little bit, though a little bit. Uh, there was some
people bet case. I wasn't one of those people. I
just I'll be surprised if he gets suspended.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
No way, no shot. All right, So Texas arch Manning,
I would say, I'll wind you up and go. I
think they're over ranked at one and again to Feldman
made a good point. They got four new offensive linemen.
I know it's four and five star guys, but there's
a lot of newness there. You got to open at
Ohio State. I'm on the Buckeyes in that one. Where
are you on Texas?

Speaker 3 (30:25):
This yere, I'm gonna concur I think they are overrated
at one. I'm wearing that hat. I mean I like
doing that. People always gonna be pro Texas now I'm
gonna be pretty anti Texas here at least it's all
you know, price comparative. But there's a reason why they
went totals only nine and a half. Have you seen
a preseason number one team with a nine and a
half win total. I haven't seen in fifteen years. Again,

(30:46):
underdog in Week one against the Buckeyes, I'm with you.
I bet Ohio State and anything under three Ohio State
for me. You mentioned the offensive line, but I think
that was a position group. That's the biggest question mark.
They couldn't run the football in any of the big
games last year. I couldn't run it against Georgia and
either one of those games. Couldn't run against the Buckeyes.
And I just mentioned that Arizona State game. They couldn't
run the football against Arizona State. Even though they averaged

(31:10):
weight pound advantage sixty pounds per man. They couldn't run
the football there. So how are they gonna do it
with brand new starters? I don't see it early. There'll
be an underdog at Georgia too, so and then at
Florida there's some other getting the schedules tougher. And most importantly,
I can't believe we've been talking for a while here.
I'm not buying arch at least compared to expectations. Not

(31:32):
buying them.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
That's a hot take, greak there.

Speaker 1 (31:35):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
What do you mean by expectation win the high scho.

Speaker 3 (31:49):
He's the preseason Heisman favorite. I mean generational quarterback. People
say he's the best college quarterback in a decade. Let
me tell you if generational quarterbacks don't wait to their
junior year play to be the starter. I think a
couple of years I talked to you now. It was
a good sound by. They said five star last name,
Maybe three star talent, probably a four star talent if
I'm being totally honest, But I don't see five star.

(32:12):
I mean his uncle Peyton, generational player. He started as
a true freshman. I go back forty some years, Marino Elway,
they all played as freshman. You know, all the Trevor
Lawrence starter, National Championship, true freshman. If he's so good,
I thought Steve Spurrier had the sound bite of the
summer and he you know, he has no filter that
the old the old ball coach said. Quinn Ewers went

(32:35):
in the seventh round. I mean, it's not like he
was back, you know, behind, you know, a surefire first
round pick. If arch Manning is so good, why wasn't
he playing over quinn Ewrs last year? That's my question.
So I think you get two answers. Okay, he is
this generational great talent, lives up the expectations. To me,
that's an indictment of Sarkeshan. You could have won the

(32:56):
title then with Manning if he was an upgrade over
yours last year, or the reality is he's not a
generational talent and that's why he couldn't, you know, start
over yours last year. So I'm more in the ladder
of that. I think he's gonna be a good quarterback.
I just don't know if he's going to be live
up and be able to live up to the hype
not this.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Was a better season Drew Aller or or arch Manning.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
That's a good question. I'm not an alor guy.

Speaker 2 (33:22):
Who do you like it? Quarterback? Then?

Speaker 3 (33:25):
I like couple Club Nick. Yeah. I don't like a
lot of the quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
Carson.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
I don't like Carson Beck. I mean, we'll see right away.
I don't know if he's one hundred percent out the eye.
I don't. Maybe the kid at Arizona State Lovett, Yeah,
I like him, he can run around. I'm looking for
guys that are like undervalued, that have some upside that
aren't being properly priced. Levitt's one. I think Carson Beck's
replacement stockedon. I know he didn't look good against the
nore Dam in the playoffs, but I think he might

(33:53):
be under the radar a little bit. But no, I
don't like the top of the board. I think allers
me have a bust at the pros.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Wow bust, total bust.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
Well, that being said, going back to your question, I'm
gonna take it as in, you know who has the
most success as a team. I lean towards Penn State.
There's just few question marks in Texas and the schedule
is easier.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
What's your concern level with James Franklin screwing something up
in a big spot, Whether it's the regular season or playoff.

Speaker 3 (34:22):
So very high, so right, I mean, power rating is
just you know, I'm looking at talent, experience level, what
you have last year? What'd you bring in boom Bank
power rating. Penn State's number one of my power ranks.
Not probably the weakest number one preseason number one team
I've had in ten plus years. But I and they're
not priced in the futures market. At least early. They

(34:43):
weren't there as high as sixteen to one and win
the national championship. I did not make that bet. My
power rings screamed to make that bet. Make that bet.
They're the number one team and they're like six had
the you know, the sixth odds as far as the futures.
I didn't make it because why Franklin can't not win
the big game? I know a lot of coaches can't,
you know, can't win the big game, can't win the
big game until they do. You know, Kirby's one of them.

(35:04):
I mean Tom Osborn back in the day was one
of them. Held Jim Harbaugh recently was one of them.
I guess you could say Ryan Day a little bit.
But the problem is we have a bigger sample size
of James Franklin with big games, and he's got like
one out of like twenty, So I just do you
trust him to win three or four in a row?
I don't.

Speaker 2 (35:22):
So who do you trust them this year?

Speaker 3 (35:26):
Because you said you only bet two teams the title?
But Alabama Notre Dame, even though they're not in the
top three of my power ratings. I just think one
of the two teams is going to have their quarterback
be a hit. Notre Dame er Alabama. If it's a hit,
I think they have as good as a roster as anybody,
and that's my pick to win the title, either one
of those two.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
Any is there is there a market for to make
the playoff? Yes, no, like a Texas Tech or like
an Illinois or any long shots to your power ratings
have higher than market.

Speaker 3 (35:55):
Ah. The one that I bet that, I mean this
is a group of five. Boise State's a runaway favorite.
In the group of five. I bet them close to
three to one. But I'm not big like I I'm
not that guy that you know has Indiana. People had
them to make the playoff at like one hundred to
one last year. I don't have that. I'm sure there's
gonna be a team that comes out of nowhere. I

(36:15):
just right now, I don't see it.

Speaker 2 (36:17):
M okay, all right, Brad Powers. He's got a lot
of bets.

Speaker 3 (36:20):
Are you?

Speaker 1 (36:21):
You would?

Speaker 2 (36:21):
You can find him on you still doing that with
Furman Todd Furman College Football?

Speaker 1 (36:25):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (36:26):
They can't came to an end after ten plus years?

Speaker 2 (36:30):
What happened him and the other guy had?

Speaker 3 (36:33):
They decided to close up shop as far as that podcast,
and they're not doing it anymore. Wow?

Speaker 2 (36:39):
Oh, where are you going to be?

Speaker 3 (36:40):
All all all full? You follow me on Twitter acts
or whatever your kids are calling it these days, Brad
Power seven, I'll do I'll do a few shows here
there by the way, are you any are you?

Speaker 2 (36:50):
I don't know if I've asked you about betting politics before.
I might have asked you that before the election.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
I don't even remember. Are you into that stuff at all?
Or not?

Speaker 2 (37:01):
Really?

Speaker 3 (37:01):
I am? I bet it? Uh, it's you asked me
last year. But I think no, it's fine. I I
just think it needs to be that is the Big
White Whale as soon as that gets legalized. I mean,
there could be so much that you open Pandora's box.
But I mean if you want to bring in tax money. Uh,

(37:22):
that is the market. Billions upon billions of dollars people bet,
and obviously a ton emotionally. I just I really hope
that at least, at the very least the presidential election
gets legalized. Now obviously you can still bet in far
away places and I have, but I I just that's
I wish it would could be here because that that's
the one that could be. We could just w with

(37:43):
dog days of Summer, you can talk about that.

Speaker 2 (37:45):
Yeah, So do you have Gavin Newsom jd Vance?

Speaker 3 (37:47):
What are you a sleeper? Oh? Wow, I'm just kidding.

Speaker 2 (37:51):
Well, let me for real, though, I do have to ask.
I forgot that I saw this story that like tourism
is so down in Vegas that the hotels are hurting financially,
like hotel vacancies way way up a You're you're seeing
this firsthand. What do you think is going on? Is
it that so many states haven't legal now that there's

(38:12):
not this push to go to Vegas. Let's go to
Vegas for the weekend. We could just go to you know,
Mohigan Sun or whatever it is.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
Yep, that's There's there's two things. There's a lot of narratives.
There's political narratives of course in any topic, but it's
just two things. Number one, gambling and you know, whether
it's going to a casino or you know, particularly to
what we talk about sports betting just more widely available
across the country. Sports better. I don't need to go
to Vegas to gamble. So that there's that. And then
the other thing is I think the number one reason
actually is Vegas isn't cheap anymore. Vegas for a long

(38:41):
time was cheap cost of living to go there. That
they incentivize that airfare, the hotel fee, and then obviously
they get you playing the tables and you know, pulling
the pull on the lever. But you don't get those
deals anymore, whether it's parking or cops and drink comps,
all that's gone by the wayside, and a lot of
it's gone by the wayside, and last five years post COVID.

(39:01):
So that that's reasons why Vegas is hurting a little bit. Hey,
I mean, I I just don't talk it, I walk it.
I left. I don't live in Vegas anymore. After a decade.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
Wow, So it's that bad there? Huh?

Speaker 3 (39:13):
Yeah, I mean again, I don't want to get political.
And maybe it's your it's somebody's thing, or maybe it's not.
It's becoming more and more rapidly like California. That's just
not I mean, that could be a good thing, it
could be a bad thing. It's just not a meat thing.
So it just wasn't for me.

Speaker 2 (39:27):
I did not even know Vegas was getting so very liberal.
Or are you talking drugs and homeless.

Speaker 3 (39:33):
A lot of drug usage. It's it's bad even in
some of the better neighborhoods. It's just they don't have
a handle on it yet. I mean, it's just you
see it every day on the street. So so you
you bolted, huh, I bolted. I'm Ohio. Believe No, you're
living in Ohio. Yeah, I love Ohio.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
Oh that's right, you're from Ohio.

Speaker 3 (39:53):
I'm from Ohio. Now I'm not in like, we're just
living in the country. It's quiet and keep in mind,
I can beat and what people don't realize. I know,
they don't take a huge bet like walking up the
window at one of the casinos. But the two most
popular sports books in the country, DraftKings and FanDuel not
available in Nevada. Still not available in Nevada. Yeah, I've
never been able to like look up on my phone

(40:14):
and make a legal bet at those sportsbooks. Now I can. Interesting.

Speaker 2 (40:18):
All right, well, Brad Power, I like that insight. That's different.
I don't think I did not know it was that
bad in Uh.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
Yeah, you're gonna it's gonna get worse and worse too.
I'm just being just being ast I call like I said,
but you are seeing articles A lot of people are saying, Hey,
maybe you weren't so negative about it. Yeah, I mean,
if you open up your eyes, it's it's not great. Damn.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
Yeah. Well, it's funny you say you don't have to
go to Vegas to bet. I have to go to
sign up for the NFL contest, So like, I'm going
here very soon. Uh. And I've got some tickets that
I want on during the season and and I make
some season long bets.

Speaker 3 (40:47):
But yeah, I don't know. I mean, I'm out of that.
If you stay at certain properties and just stay there
to vacation. Still one of the best places in the world,
but to live there, they got work to do.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
Yeah. Wow, all right, Brad Power's great stuff, man. He's
all over social media. We'll have him back during the season.

Speaker 3 (41:03):
Thanks a lot, buddy, thanks for having me
