Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up? Straight Fire, fam, It's me Jason McIntyre.
Straight Fire for Thursday, October thirty first two Thy twenty four,
Hoppy Halloween, and congratulations are in order to the La
Dodgers who overcame a five nothing deficit in a wild
(00:32):
World Series Game five, come back and beat the Yanks
seven to six, capture the World Series crown in dramatic fashion.
Tremendous game last night. I was watching it at my
daughter's soccer practice. That melt down by the Yankees in
the fifth inning will not soon be forgotten. I'll talk
about that, and then we have a great guest, one
of you, the favorites every time we have them on
you guys love in Preston Johnson, aka the Sports Cheetah.
(00:56):
And if you elect to watch the interview on YouTube,
you will be shocked because Preston has shaved off his
James Harden beard, which he's had the whole time I've
known him, and you see him and I was like,
ohh that's a different human being it. Come to think
of it, I have not seen James Harden without his beard.
You got to go look up like Arizona State videos
to see the last time Harden didn't have his beard anyway.
(01:17):
So yeah, we're posting the YouTube videos on the interviews
on YouTube now, so you can go check that out,
or you could just listen to the podcast and here
what he has to say. I'll just be brief because
the interview with Preston's long. Yankees go up five to nothing.
I'm instantly like, oh shucks, all right, Game six, gotta
get tickets Friday coming back here, probably can get tickets,
all right. Who am I gonna go with?
Speaker 3 (01:38):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Do I take the fan? Do I just take one
of the kids, the wife?
Speaker 1 (01:41):
What do we do?
Speaker 2 (01:44):
You know, I'm a lot going on. Is Game seven
could be Saturday night? Holy cow, you got Penn State,
Ohio State, and then maybe World Series Game seven. Oh
my gosh, it's gonna be great. Yank's up five nothing,
your cruising, and then the fifth inning happens and it's
just an absolute meltdown. Aaron Judge drops a routine pop fly.
I mean, Judge had a home run earlier in the game.
(02:05):
You're like, okay, Judge got the late inning hit in
Game four, woke him up. Then he hits the home run.
It's like, all right, here we go. Yanks are back.
Judge drops a fly ball in the fifth inning. Okay,
next thing you know, Yankees are working. There are out
of a jam, bases loaded, two outs, and it's a
(02:27):
ground ball to first base. Okay, Mookie Bets obviously a
burner and Rizzo can't get to first in time. But
the pitcher, seeing what's going on, Cole has to cover
and Cole as the balls hit. I guess he misjudged
it and thought Rizzo could just walk to the bag.
(02:47):
But Rizzillo is not fleet to foot. Nobody covers first base.
It's like baseball one on one basics that you learn,
and you know double a as a ten year old,
at least that's what it was for me. And Mookie
Bets beats it out and the Dodgers get on the board,
and that was just the beginning of the end. Freddy
(03:08):
Freeman follows that up with a single, two runners score.
Next toe you know, it's five to three. Then Hernandez
with a double, and it was just the floodgates open
tie game at five, Yanks retook the lead, and then
the Dodgers come back in the eighth with two and
it was just a devastating loss for the Yankees. They
had a catcher's interference in that pivot eighth inning, you
(03:29):
had a balk in the eighth or ninth, I forget
which one it was, and then you had three errors
by the Yankees. Just I mean, that's not what you
expect in a big spot. But it's pretty clear that
this was they They felt it. They were like, all right,
five nothing, we got this. We're heading back, probably already
in their mind making travel plans, and they just weren't
(03:49):
locked in. Gotta say lock folks. Anyways, congrats to the Dodgers.
There were fireworks last night in Los Angeles because La
loves them. Some good fireworks. July fourth, obviously July fourth,
but it's like World Series, super Bowl, NBA Finals. I
would say Easter, but I don't think Easter. But La
just loves fireworks. And that's a tough one for the
(04:11):
Yankees to swallow. But Shoeo Tani goes from playing for
the Angels winning nothing first year with the Dodgers, goes
fifty to fifty and then wins a World Series. Oh
what a sport? All right, Without further ado, let's get
to our guest Preston Johnson.
Speaker 1 (04:29):

he knows everything when it comes to sports.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I know what sports fans want, but for.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Everything he doesn't, he knows the guy who does.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Let's just say I know a guy who knows the
guy who knows another guy.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
All right, let's welcome back to Straight Fire. One of
the most popular guests. I'm pretty sure every time he
goes on a podcast he ends up generating a lot
of clicks and listens because he's interesting, He's got a
lot going on, and if you're watching on YouTube, you
know he's got a nice little setup in his backyard.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
There.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Preston Johnson, who has shaved off the James Harden beard.
Oh my gosh, startling.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I have. I had to give James Harden and Vitza
Zubots my guys here in LA a chance this season,
so I shaved mine off. Clippers are like the third
best defense in the league in Harlem Iver saying like
twenty five and thirteen and zubots is what like twenty five,
fourteen and six, So he leads a league in rebounding. Like, look,
I'm just kidding. I'm a Lakers fan, you know that.
But I had to give some love to heart and
(05:40):
they've at least performed well so far.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
I can't believe he's looking at NBA defensive stats in
the first week of the season and that's just he's
a diehard. But let me ask you what was behind
shaving off that, James harden Beard? Because I've known you,
I guess probably five six years and you've had it
the whole time. Was there a life changing thing or
do you not want to talk about it?
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Oh? No, I don't care. I just honestly, I was
one night and decided it was time. I was just
actually was up. I was up late because I had
to stay up till two or three am in California
for a Crawley Town, UK time zone thing, and I
was just staring at the mirror. It was like eleven
PM and I was like, man, I got two more hours,
so this meeting, what am I gonna do? I just
went for it. But it had been like nine plus.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Years, so nine what did the kids and wife say.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Kid first kid? Oldest started crying when she first saw
me the next morning. No, for a few minutes she
was like lost, and then she was laughing at it,
you know, a bit later, so it was okay. But ever,
I mean you said it. What I came around. Everyone
says I like younger, So I guess that's a positive.
I should just run. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
No, I mean not that you looked older before, but
just you know, a beard is traditionally an older guy thing,
except when you're in your twenties and you want to
look a little bit older. But wow, Well congrats man.
By the way, you know we have a quote up
in a while. I do follow you on social media obviously.
What's the latest with Crawley Town, the soccer team you
own overseas.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
We got promoted last season, so we're in League one
now and it's a battle because it's just it's we're
i think third or fourth from the bottom currently, so
we're fighting similar to our first season, where we're feeling
like we're playing at a disadvantage either against teams with
bigger budgets or you know, injuries or this or that,
and so it's just it's one of those where the
ups and downs of English football are insane and this
(07:20):
year is going to be pretty hard, and we kind
of expected it from the get go this summer, but
I've been out there a lot more trying to help
with the day to day and moved the transition as
much as possible. We had a lot of player turn over,
our new coaching staff came in more recently, so we're
just battling. But it's also fun, you know, it's part
of this experience.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
It is an experience. You obviously don't follow Lega MX,
but you know, Nikoxa, we were rolling hot, we had
a great win over Seattle in the League's Cup, and
we just kind of cratered here in the last month
and we just had to let go our coach and
you know, you could see it coming. But it's like
soccer is real tough. We've got i think the best
roster since I've been in the ownership group, and yet
(07:59):
really and figure.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
It out here.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
I mean, the other teams, man, the spending is getting crazy.
I'm just curious. This is a small thing. I haven't
talked about it with anybody really, but did you notice
that the MLS is considering moving the dates of their
season to more reflect a global transfer window, so they
would have more of an opportunity to grab guys from Europe.
Had you seen that news or no?
Speaker 3 (08:21):
I have seen that, and it's interesting because currently we
have an opportunity to grab guys when the season ends
in like October range here November. We get people come
over from the US to play in our January transfer window,
which is like mid season in Europe. So it would
change that aspect of our recruiting too, So it would
go both ways. But it'll be interesting to see if
it might take a few years to transition fully. But
(08:43):
they're looking at it.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, well, I'm sure you saw. Also they're pegging this
around the twenty twenty six World Cup, as soccer in
North America is going to be massive. But anyway, people
do don't tune in here for soccer. They want your takes.
I don't know. President, I'm sorry to report this, and
I'm sure some people are gonna be pissed, but I'm
kind of into the election now that we're like only
a few days out. Are you really sadly I've gotten
(09:06):
into it. I don't know, man, I don't know if
it was the Tony Hincliff thing over the weekend. I
know he's a comedian. Blah blah blah. Okay, I've had
more people talk politics and text me about politics lately
than I expected, and I'm like kind of following it now.
I am just curious, A, do you have one cent
wagered on the election?
Speaker 3 (09:25):
No? Zero sense wagered?
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Have you wagered in previous elections?
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (09:31):
How did that go?
Speaker 3 (09:33):
It went? It went? Okay. I here's here's here's my
quick thing. I'll give you thirty seconds on election slash
politics in general. One. I generally hate politics because it
typically brings out the worst in people. Yes, so I
just I just whatever side you're on, Like I just
I stay out of it. I don't follow it very closely.
But interestingly enough, I live in a country. I'm in America,
(09:55):
whereas it's a very unique setup and race, this current
election coming up here in a few days, and the
markets have been extremely weird. So I've obviously heard a
lot about it the last few weeks from betters that
do bet professionally and are following it. And I was
just with someone in Vegas actually last week who does
campaigning for one of the parties and was talking about
a lot of the numbers and the polling and like
the betting markets he thinks are wrong. And you know,
(10:17):
there's a lot of talk with Trump and the betting
markets has slowly moved his way, but like the polls
are quite a bit lower where you know, as of
a week or two ago, it was closer to fifty
to fifty. I think now polls are favoring Trump some
I haven't followed it too closely, but he was trying
to get me to bet on on the Democratic Party
and I was, you know, for the price and kind
of It's one of those where when I was betting
regularly full time, if you see, you know, a one
(10:40):
to two to three percent edge, you love it. And
some of the betting markets relative to the polls were
saying there were like five to ten percent edges on
some of the selection stuff. So like, I didn't bet
it personally because I just have not cared at all
and followed it until recently when everyone's been asking me
and I've seen stuff going around Twitter or whatnot, So.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
I confess that's part of the reason I brought it up.
You understand, markets, You've been a huge college football gambler,
NFL everything, So it's weird. The one angle that I
think people are missing with the gambling and they're saying that,
you know, Trump is like sixty four to sixty six
percent according to the gambling markets, But one thing that's
missing is preston who gambles on sports? Who gambles really
(11:18):
in general? And that's men. I would say, I'm guessing.
I'm just I don't have data on this. I'm guessing
eighty to ninety percent of sports bets are men, maybe more,
maybe higher. Well, who do you think is betting on
the election? I don't think it's women. I think it's
mostly men. Now, are these guys who are plugged in
and following the polls or are they getting emotional as
when we know sports betters do about Oh man, I
(11:39):
love this candidate. I'm all in, he's gonna win, she's
gonna whatever. And I think people are getting emotional and
you know, putting fifty one hundred dollars bets on a
certain president. And I'm with you. I think the gambling
markets are way way off here. And there are some
people who are saying this what's it called poly the
(12:00):
one that's super popular market Polymarket. They're saying, well, look
who owns Polymarket, and he's in bed with Elon Musk
and Trump. So they're making this look as if well,
Trump is leading in the gambling markets, and then if
he were to lose, Wait a minute, he was so
far ahead in the gambling markets, this has to be rigged.
(12:20):
There's fraud. It was stolen. And now here we go
with like the potential for a January sixth all over again.
And I got to ask you about that, because you
do follow gambling a lot.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
I'll say, by counter to your original point about this,
there are plenty of smart males that would bet the
other side if they really thought it was that far off,
which would move the market back. Yes, it should, it
should normalize, it should balance, and so that point of
the actual emotion, Like then you're getting to the level
(12:51):
of is there enough call it dumb square emotional money
betting on one side that it's moving, and enough that
all the sharp money still is not going to counter
it back to a point where it's efficient again, like
the super Bowl potentially, which is one of the very
few instances a year you can have public money out
weigh maybe sharp money great, you know, so you're basically
(13:14):
trying to assess is this an event like the super
Bowl or like McGregor Mayweather fighting, or is it not?
And if you think it is, then you could be
right and there's going to be quite a bit of
value relative to the price in the markets you can
in everything on the Democratic Party. If you think that way,
the locidity in this type of market should be balancing
out and there's enough sharp action that the true price
(13:35):
should be what the market says it is. And like,
it's probably a fair price. It's a really interesting one.
And I haven't done enough details on research myself to
like I said, I bet zero sense on this, But
that's just kind of the general narrative and discussion out there.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Your buddy in Vegas who was telling you to bet,
which side is he coming in on? Like, Hey, this
is wildly mispriced. And when he shows you, why is
the data, whether it's a voter registration or early numbers,
was it convincing enough for you to at least think
about it?
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Yeah? I thought about it, and he and the reason
he brought it up because he knows I haven't really
been betting for a few years. But I went I
went out of my way to finally make my first
college football bet of the oh. While I was there,
I was there for a music festival for like a
day and a half. Em No, it was when we
were young. Festival. It's like a bunch of like emo
and punk rock bands that played two days Saturday Sunday.
(14:31):
I went Sunday. I arrived Saturday though, early enough to
bet on Georgia Texas, which I thought was just nice.
Miss price pretty significantly, So it worked out in that one.
But that was why he said, Okay, well if you're betting,
He's like, you want another big edge that's like Georgia
against Texas. He's like, yeah, look at the look at
the election. So I didn't see any like detailed whole
(14:52):
stuff or data other than I just he's not gonna
lie to me. He was just like, just trust me now.
To be fair, the polls have now moved about half
of the margin that it was that a week and
a half to two weeks ago, so like the polls
are slowly getting closer to where the market had moved. First,
polls had like crunched that, and then the market's moved
a little bit more towards the Trump side. And now
are the polls going to drift back this way or
(15:12):
is it going to come more like this? It's kind
of a guessing game at this point. I think.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Yeah, it seems like the mainstream media is also driving
a lot of this with just you know, in sometimes
some weeks in the NFL, it's like the narrative is
XYZ and the media hammers it for five days. Everybody
on the public loves it, and then what happens on
Sunday That team that's narrative driven totally shits the bed
and gets destroyed. Maybe we see that this week with
(15:37):
Lion's Packers in the NFL. We'll get to that, but
I don't know. Again, politics is different because it involves voting,
and I mean, I don't know how many millions of
votes are cast. The numbers are insane. I've never really
bet on politics, but I made my first bet on
the election, probably delm on my part, But again, I
(15:58):
think that your guy was on the something with the
mispriced but we'll see, we'll see. Not expecting to win
any money. Let's go to college football. So you said
you made your first bet Texas Georgia. Obviously I am curious.
I've got some friends who were just like, dude, this
is starting to feel like almost college basketball, like there's
(16:18):
we'll just wait for the playoffs. And I'm starting to
not watch as much college football as I used to.
And I'm like, oh, well, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
Really.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I heard that from two dudes, and I was like, really, Now,
I coached my daughter in soccer, and I did turn
around to the debt and not the fans, the parents,
and I was like, hey, does anybody have the USC
Penn State score? And they all just kind of looked
at me like they weren't even paying attention, and finally
a dad calls it up. Yeah, and again, this is
southern California. Obviously there were some USC fans, surely, and
(16:47):
nobody even really cared and that was a big game.
But I don't know, Preston, what's the vibe you're getting
on college football. I think the season has been amazing.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Hey, I actually I hadn't considered that going to twelve
teams could get of it a college basketball field that
no one actually cares until December or January or whatever.
So and that's why I said, oh no, I was
like genuinely sad for fans. I was like, really, like,
is that what it actually has come down to? Because
and I haven't followed it as much as I used to,
(17:14):
but my dad follows it and he'll ask me like, oh,
did you see this game? Or she's like Oregon, Ohio States,
you hear about that? Or when BYU played Kansas State
that was a big one. My parents were at the
game in Utah. Every bounce is going By's way and
they ended up winning by like thirty. And now it's
actually like a pretty significant win because Bius run the
table since and they're in the mix, and it's like
a huge thing for BIU sports, which normally you would
(17:35):
never be in the playoff mix for college football. So
from my side, I got people i'd talk out with
her or family or they're like really into it. So
I think I haven't seen the other side as frequently,
But I can see why some fans would have loved
the parody of the fact that there hasn't been like
just a one standout, like this is the best team
and it's everyone else. It could have been Georgia had
they beat Alabama still potentially, but I would think that
(17:59):
would I have interest right now? Everyone wants to kind
of get an idea of these teams. Who are the
teams that could make a run in the in the
tournament we'll call it. So that's interesting. I really hadn't
considered that there are fans that are like, well, there's
no point watching, I'll just watch later on. Which. Yeah, again,
that's kind of sad for the nature of the sport.
And I think it's part of it correlated with all
the nil and players are now getting paid. Fans maybe
(18:20):
hate that they're getting paid millions of dollars to go
play college sports. Now I'm not sure there might be
kind of a combination of multiple levels.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Yeah, speaking of BYU, So they have what a bye
this week and they have then the big game, the
rivalry against Utah that essentially, given the rest of their schedule,
is for the playoff.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Right, it's possible. So here's the quick thing on BAU
because I did go there, I graduated from there. Utah
was supposed to be the big TOLL favorite by a
lot somehow, BI use like two t D favorites or something.
If I heard all, yes, I don't think they should
be that. Someone said they thought it would be that.
And I know that Utah has done like their third quarterback,
and I was like, wow, I haven't been following the
markets there. But if that's the case, like I would
(18:59):
probably just bet Utah bo, I'm getting over to tit's
at home. Regardless if they win that one, they have
three more games against big towal opponents, which are all
pretty winnable. They're not necessarily playoff TEAMO because they sill
have to play a Big twelve championship game, which should
probably be against Iowa State, maybe it's Kansas State. If
they beat Iowa State, I think they play the final
game of the year. And if you lose, if you
go twelve and OH but then lose the Big twelve
(19:20):
Championship game, is BYU getting one of the at large
spots over a Tennessee or an LSU or A and
M or something like that. Maybe not so My guess
is they have to go thirteen to OH more often
than not, which they could, but then they get in
and they get a bye because they'll be the Big
twelve champ which is crazy as a fan to think
that's even like realistic.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
That's weird, right, because I don't think of BYU or
Iowa State as even near the elite teams in the
country right now, it's Oregon, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas that
seems to be it. I don't put Penn State.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
How good is Miami them a lot talked about. I
haven't watched them play yet, but they might actually be
pretty good.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
Yeah, they I can give up a lot of points
and they seem to pull some stuff out of the
rear end all the time.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
My guess is Clemson's going to be favored against them
in the ACC title game, right? Is that what you're Okay? So,
how do you think this shakes out? Like Alabama already
has two losses. Do you think that there's a chance
with two losses they're gonna get left out?
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (20:20):
If they don't even make the SEC title game, I
think there's a chance. Again, it's all it all comes
down to those final weeks of well BYU loses and
it's one lost BYU and two lost Bama, Like Bama's
getting in. But if BYU goes undefeated, then Bama has
a team that they can't get in for and so
then it's like it's going to just depend on that
multiple games, you know, I Aloway States flirted with being
a top ten ish team a few seasons under Matt
(20:43):
Campbell see the coach still probably and they've always been
in like a top twenty five team. So my guess
is when it comes down to it, they would be
favorites against BYU. They've kind of have the pedigree a
little bit more and are probably slightly more talented anyway,
So it's probably gonna be Iowa State if I had
to actually bet on it. But my guess is BOU
is like it's like a sixty to forty game or something,
so it's not dead for the hope inside me to
(21:04):
see something a miracle happen.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
It just does feel like if Alabama gets left out
of the playoff in the first year of this thing.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
And there's twelve teams, yeah, there's going.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
To be an uproar in the SEC and then you
know we got to expand it.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
We got we got it. So I know there was
some changes, and I honestly don't even know who's in
what division anymore. But is it still A and M,
Georgia and Bama. Are they all on one side or
is Georgia on the other side? That's right, I have
to look because I guess there's a chance Bama could
still make the SEC title game and then from there
when the SEC and then they'd be in for sure
with two losses. So I guess it depends on all
(21:37):
misses on their side, or at least they used to be.
I know Texas was added. Which side is Texas on?
So there could be a way that Alabama sneaks in
the two losses.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
Anyway, So the SEC is having a down year and
it looks like they have three six eight teams ranked
in the top twenty five.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Tennessee's on their side too, are they at least they
used to be. I think, yeah, yeah, there's a bunch.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
I don't think Tennessee's particularly good.
Speaker 3 (21:57):
I don't know, do you or I've actually watched them
play Bama. That was another one. I live bet them
at one point just for action, like in the third
or fourth quarter. They're probably what's crazy about them is
their offense has been so good. It's hyper. The guy
that used to be a central FORWIDA, I think right
runs quick, up tempo. He's always had pretty average to
poor defenses. Now Tennessee's defense is like top ten, but
(22:18):
they're not quite good enough at offense. It's like if
you had had like the Hendon Hooker years on offense
with this year's defense, they would be legit. But I
think they're kind of just unbalanced and so probably not
quite competitive enough.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
How much do you think NIL has kind of balanced
out things in college football because it feels like this
year there's nobody that's great or dominant.
Speaker 3 (22:39):
It's a good question. I haven't looked into it much,
although I've had people telling me like, Hey, you should
get a job as a general manager at a university
for like basketball or college football, And I was like,
are those is like a thing now? Like it's a
real position now? Is because you have to be a
GM because you're managing all the NIL money in which
play it's like a recruiting you're basically buying players or
trading for players in some way. And I was like,
that's interesting. You know what woj just didn't he just
(23:00):
quit what he did? Yeah, basically the general manager? Is
it like Saint Joe's or something Bonaventure?
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Yeah, that's very audi.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Yeah. Yeah, so like those are going to be positions
that are real, which means this NIL stuff is having
real impact on performance and ultimately how universities and sporting
programs are competitive. But I can look at reasons yet
really quite you know, detailed.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
NIL is creating jobs. Now you've got all You've got
all these people managing athletes to help them get NIL money.
You've got new positions opening up at universe like this,
I feel like the NIL has been really good for
college sports.
Speaker 3 (23:37):
Yeah, in general, it's I was always kind of on
the side where athletes when you're making so many millions
as a university and the athletes get a scholarship, and
I understand the argument of oh, well, it's an education
they couldn't get anywhere else. It's like, at some point,
like the numerical values of a scholarship and an education
relative to what those universities were pulling in was just crazy.
So I think it's good that the players are starting
(23:58):
to get rewarded for who they are and how good
they are at the sport and the amount of attraction
and eyes that they bring in university and program. And
then like you're right, agents are you know, more jobs
for them, although I generally hate agents, more so in
English football, but oh yeah, yeah, it's just always a
mess with agents. But like there's a lot of opportunity.
So I think it'll really probably turn in the next
(24:22):
three years, and then in about three years we'll like
kind of know like, oh, this is how it's done,
this is the process, these are the positions, these are
the jobs, and so it'll be like kind of like
that five year total transition.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Now, one more college question before we go to NFL,
and it's actually college hoops. I think we have probably
the biggest name to go to college basketball since Zion.
That would be Cooper Flag. I mean, it's possible I
miss somebody, but the hype around Cooper Flag, the stories
about him and the the Olympic lead ups, going toe
to toe with Anthony Davison company, the Cooper Flag hype
(25:06):
is real. I don't know if you saw the dismembered
Arizona State by like sixty and some kind of glorified scrimmage.
I'm excited for Cooper Flag. We already see teams in
the NBA like Utah Jazz, there's a salute the flag
and all these hashtags going on. It's a little crazy,
But how much have you seen a Cooper flag? And
what's your vibe in college hoops the season?
Speaker 3 (25:25):
I've never seen a game where he's actually just playing
like up and down, like a full game. It's always
just highlight video switch which like your local team, the
jmac higlight video would look good, like you could you
could be in the draft this summer. So like, I
don't really know. I can't put a ton of stock
in other than he's some kid from Maine, I believe. Yeah,
it's just the most unlikely spot and to see what
(25:46):
he can do and whatever one's hyping, like everyone hyped
up Wemby and like at this point in time, like
if you're that hyped, you're probably that good and you're
not going to be a bust. So the main thing
I would say I concentrate on more than anything currently
is how does it impact the tanking and the NBA season,
And from a betting standpoint, that will certainly play a
role in the second half of the season as far
as how teams are pricing or getting priced on how
(26:09):
they're playing, as far as players and who's resting and
load management, and oh, so and so has an ankle
injury for six weeks and because they're just trying to
lose because they want Cooper flag. So that's why it
interests me, is the amount of intent from teams to
lose on purpose.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Since you mentioned injuries, one NBA one that jumped out
is the Joel Embiid stuff. So Joel Embiid played in
the Olympics, okay, but didn't have a procedure according to
I haven't seen any reports that he had a clean
up certain nothing, And now he's already missing looks like
he's about to miss a week here to start the season.
And you got predictably Charles Barkley piling in and all
(26:45):
these guys, And it's like, I don't know, Preston, why
should they have it both ways? Why should we be
able to bury Embid when he's not one hundred percent
healthy in the playoffs and doesn't deliver, and then also
bury him when he doesn't want to play in games
and he said he's never doing back to backs again
in his career or something like that. Like I kind
of defend him in this stuff.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
I don't know, especially when Barkley, I think, is one
of the guys that'll like, you know, bash him in
the playoffs when he's not playing very hard or he's
fatigued late or can't go. And you know, I think
what's interesting and the reason why I would defend the
people that are kind of hating on him now some
back would be he did say he wasn't going to
play back to back sever again, which gives you the
(27:28):
intent that he is going to be playing this season,
just not in the back to backs, and then suddenly
a week or two later, it's like, oh, actually, also
I'm not ready yet, and he didn't have a surgical operation,
and he was playing in the Olympics a little while ago. Yeah,
so like, what is there there? Seems like there's something
there that doesn't quite add up. But if he had
been like saying, look, I'm focused on playoffs in a
(27:49):
potential championship, I'm never going to play the back to backs.
But he's playing from the get go this season, then
no one would be complaining. I actually think it would
go over well. But the question is that, well, then
why is he not playing now? And that's where you
get the the headbutting. And so I see both points
of view. If we're up to me though, and if
it were up to Darryl Morey, who I know is
just trying to win a championship and probably should have
had one already in Houston. Like, if you're maximizing and
(28:11):
optimizing for winning a ring, which is what every team
should ultimately be doing, you got to make sure embi' t.
Now here's the question I think I heard. I haven't
been following extremely closely. I think they have the worst
net rating in the NBA so far the Sixers do
without Paul George and Embiid. It's pretty bad at some level.
And last year I think they only won thirty percent
of their games without Embiid, Like they're a pretty bad
team when he's not playing. He's just that impactful. He's
(28:32):
one of the best players in the world at some level.
You have to have him play if you're even going
to make the playoffs, and if your first round against
the Celtics like rip anyway, So like you got to
make a decision eventually where the regular season does matter.
But if you're optimizing for playoff runs and championships, I
do understand playing them fifty to fifty five games this year.
Maybe it needs to be sixty, but why is he
(28:54):
not playing? Now? What's the story? Who knows?
Speaker 2 (28:56):
That's a little troubling. Two teams have underachieved in again,
it's very early, but the Bucks look quite bad. Preston
one in three he can't stop anybody. No, I mean,
we saw that coming, but we didn't realize it'd be
this bad. And then the Nuggets, who you know, have
needed to come back like late over time time type wins.
It's like, wow, the Nuggets are not And I don't
(29:18):
know how much of this is Jamal Murray with Denver,
but I haven't watched enough Bucks to know what the
hell's going on. I'm just you know, reading and checking.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
The box scores.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
But it definitely feels like if those two teams stumble,
the Nuggets go super Bowl, not Super Bowl, NBA Finals
window will have closed, and then the Bucks. You start
to wonder about Yannis.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
Did he go somewhere else, like at.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
Least going to ask out. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
Here's here's the question. I'll just get straight to it.
Is it possible that Drew Holiday impacts winning more than
Damian Lillard. It's easier to say now, but people were
some a few people were mentioning it even a couple
of years ago, even throughout the fact that Drew ended
up going to Boston, which directly hurt Milwaukee bucks chances
ever winning a title, which they didn't see coming when
(30:01):
they made the trade of Portland. But just straight up, like,
is Drew Holliday a more impactful player towards winning than
Damian Lillard? And it's kind of bearing itself out some
I know the Celtics are stacked anyway, but when you
have Dame Lillard and then you're throwing Gary Trent Junior
and Turian Prince and Giannis is a good defender and
Book Lopez at least used to be, and he's probably
just declining because he's old and his improtection isn't what
(30:23):
it was like they don't have anyone to stop the
point of attack when it's Dame, Gary Trant Junior and
Prince who's old, and they never really was that good
of a three and D guy anyway. Truthfully, it's like
you're never going to get stops. But like Drew Holliday,
does he add what damecat offensively? Of course not, but
he would bring something defensively that they don't have. Even
when Middleton comes back and he's healthy, which is a
big if these days. Anyway, he's not a defender. He's
(30:43):
not going to just lock guys up and stop the
point of attack. That's what you needed, Drew Holliday. And
it's like, could Giannis have carried the offensive load without
Dame if you had Drew, and would you have been
a better team overall? And I think the answer is
kind of bearing itself out. Or is Mark excuse me,
is it Budenholzer, Mike Budenholzer. Is he a better coach
than Doc? And why did they even fire him in
the first place? Or free Doc? Forgive me? It's a griff.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Was like thirty fifteen or something.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
Yeah, he had like sixty seven to seventy percent win
rate and everyone hated them, so they got rid of him.
So like there's also some coaching aspect to the formula,
But the variable of Drew versus Dame, I think is
the one where if you look straight up, it's Drew's
not nearly as sexy as Dame Willard taking step back
thirty footers and he has those games where everyone's getting
texted and seeing it on Twitter, and they turned the
channel a couple times a year, but like other than that,
(31:31):
like Drew probably just impacts winning more and that's the
trade was probably just wrong.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Yeah, and remember Drew got chipped to the Bucks initially
and they instantly win a title and take down the Suns,
and he was awesome in the finals, and then he
goes to Boston wins another title. Oh that's a that's
a look at that. That's a spicy take impact.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
I don't even think it's that spicy anymore. And the numbers,
I think free trade.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
But if you see that out loud, or if you
float that on social media, or if you're in the
gym going, I know you hoops a lot, go in
the gym, tell a couple guys, dude, Drew Holiday is
more important than Damian Lillard. They'll they'll look at you
like you don't know ball, They'll say stupid stuff like that,
But the reality is you're right for sure. Holiday. All right,
let's go to NFL. First of all, first question, any
(32:15):
macro takeaways for the league here through what are we
eight weeks?
Speaker 3 (32:21):
Yeah, I think it has been so. I actually saw
this last night. I think I was obviously I'm sweating.
It's Dodgers World Series when we blew the sleep last night,
but hopefully you get it close to night. But I
was on Twitter a lot more than usual because of
Dodger stuff, and I saw someone tweet a picture of
the bottom of the standings, just teams like one through
thirty or thirty two whatever there are in NFL. Yeah,
(32:41):
and there was like, there's like twelve teams that are
three three wins are fewer so far. This He's like,
there's just like a lot of bad teams, And does
that mean there's that many good teams or is it
just that like people I don't know, or is it
just random? Like I'm trying to decide, is the NFL
that split where there's just extremes on both sides or
is it that the mediocre teams can beat up on
(33:02):
the bad teams and so the mediocre teams that have
good records so far actually aren't even that good and
shouldn't even be contenders. You know, in the mix there
would be like like the Eagles have won a couple
in a row, but are they really that good? It
was against bad teams, like they were in the Super
Bowl a couple of years ago, but they've declined since,
but maybe they're coming back. But also like maybe they've
just beat up on teams that are bad, like the Niners,
(33:22):
for example. You have like the text ins like the
Niners should be good, but they've been injured and they're
trying to survive, and so they're one where you look
at their record and they're like, oh, they're probably better,
but like maybe they aren'tod enough to like. So when
you're looking for like actual teams that can win the
Super Bowl, which usually is a pretty big pot, my instinct,
without really following again as closely as usual, I'm not
betting on the NFL this year. My instinct is there's
(33:45):
just not as many teams that are like elite super
Bowl worthy candidates in the NFL this year than in
past seasons. And the case Chiefs are one that are
undefeated I think still right, Yeah, Like their offense still
has been pretty garbage and Mahomes can't like really throw
touchdowns and throws interceptions every game. So it's like there's
just like a lot of question marks and I wish
I had like more answers that are definitive, but I
(34:05):
think it's like if Chiefs have to be the mix
Ravens have to be in the mix obviously, just because
like some of the Lions are probably the other kind
of top three to four team that has a real
legitimate shot. But after that, like, I think it's really
hard to make arguments that, like this team is good
just because I think there's so much bad and it's
just been Maybe it's just a weird start too, it
could kind of balance out.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
It's weird because in football we have the salary cap obviously,
and the league wants parody that everybody has a chance.
We know that the Panthers suck, the Browns are terrible,
the Jets, the Giants for like, mostly for a decade,
all those teams have been garbage, but you've also had
some teams come up and kind of surprise, it looks
like Washington is back. It's early. By the way, were
you on Jaden Daniels or Drake May who did you
(34:47):
think was better coming out?
Speaker 3 (34:49):
I think Daniels is going to probably be better. That's
easy to say now, so I also now, I also
didn't think Mahomes would be a good quarterback, So I'll
take it like Daniel's over May for sure. While I
mean you mentioned Washington so them in the Texans, like,
for example, those are two teams that are like, do
you actually think they can win the Super Bowl?
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Well, I can. First of all, I was saying Drake
May coming out versus d Jayden Dan's coming out of
the day because I was a May guy, like an idiot,
and I feel dumb. Now Daniels looks incredible. I think
Washington could be in the NFC Championship game win the
Super Bowl this year. I'd be stunned.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
So I think there's a lot of those teams, not
a lot, but like a couple of those up there
that just I don't think actually can win it. But
their record's good so far because there's just been so
many bad teams that others are beating up on real quick.
If I think the reason I thought Daniels was better
is I think we've had enough evidence in the last
five to ten years that quarterbacks that get more time,
even if it's a transfer to another college or play
(35:40):
more like four years, can just be trusted immediately in
the NFL their rookie season or sophomore seasons more than that.
Used to be the perception before it was like just
draft the guy with the most upside and play him
right away, and those guys just haven't panned out as often,
and so I think there's something to like even a
rock perty Right who got to play a bunch of
years in college and step in Daniels who got to
really improve as a legate athlete and quarterback first, and
(36:01):
then he can step in and he's just used to
seeing fifty plus games of defenses, which is a lot
of experience, whether it's college level or not. So I
think that's why, like the Daniels versus may or some
of these other younger guys that are more raw, just
i'd probably bet on the guy. No. Now, Daniels is
like twenty four or five years old already, so you
don't have as much upside long term, but regardless, you're
trying to win now or at least soon. So like
(36:21):
Cook carries at some point.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
Yeah, Like for instance, cam Ward has been around the block.
I think this is his third school. He was at
Washington State and Incarnate Ward or something. I love cam
Ward coming out. I think he's gonna I think he's awesome.
I mean, I don't know how much you've seen in Miami,
but he strikes me as a guy who's going to
be awesome prospect. I still have questions about Shador. I
don't know about you.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
I don't know that. I don't understand. And they have
so many good receivers. And is it Dion thing? Is
it familiarity that's or is he actually good? I actually
don't know. I think that's one of the more interesting
bets on a quarterback that's going to probably go. I
don't know. Is it first round? I imagine, well, if.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
The Panthers and Titans are drafting one two Mike, yes,
is there go both going quarterbacks?
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Right? It's yeah, So you'd think one of them would
be Schudor at that point.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
And one's Cam. And then the Jets are kind of
up Shit's creek because they have they're struck with Aaron Rodgers,
who's been, you know, not very good. And then you know,
just to Dick in interviews, and then is he going
to stick around or retire? You know, is he gonna
want to walk away a failure in his one Jet stit?
And if he does walk away, great, But then the
Jets are like, do we take Quinn Viewers, I don't
(37:25):
like what I've seen from Carson Beck to you or no.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
No, he's Yeah, I think he went in with more
hype than he's actually he's like he's like he reminds
me of like like very he's got some Mitchell Trubisky vibes.
I don't know, but but he just has a bunch
of talent around him and you know, a good defense
and athletes and coaching staff, but probably not good enough
to be an NFL quarterback.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
But yeah, I mean, do you like.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Yours? I think actually has like like the touch on
his long ball and his ability to just lead receivers
and like his vision I feel like is way less
structured than like Beck's just in a great situation, but
Sark's also a great phenomenal offensive mind, like akin to
like a Shanahan or McVeigh, where maybe yours is just
the benefit of that. Manning stepped in and it was
(38:08):
pretty good too, So I'm not sure about the stuff
I've seen of viewers. Even his freshman season when he
first stepped in before an injury and he was out,
I was like blown away by what he could do.
So I actually I actually have a little more pro
yours than you are, probably.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Well, And I bring up quarterbacks Preston because you look
around the league and it's like, quarterback play looks like
it's kind of gone down again. The numbers, nobody's really
Like Baker Mayfield leads the league in touchdown passes. We
know Lamar is special, we know Josh Allen special. Mahomes
to struggle, but he's very good. Like I got to
be honest, there's moments where Jordan Love is throwing so
many picks and looks like he's got happy feet in
(38:42):
the pocket, and then you know, Jared Goff is his
first outdoor game of the season this weekend, Like I
don't quarterback plays seems like it's gone down, Like Trevor Lawrence?
Is he even good?
Speaker 3 (38:53):
Even good? And he was one of the best prospects
since what Andrew Luck I think was the camp right,
Like it's a great question. He was good. He just
can you tell me what's yours? I know, I know
we're wrapping up soon. What's your opinion on those guys
that were good for like a year or two and
showed promise and then suddenly I have dropped off like
Trevor Lawrence, Like what actually happened? Is it the coaching?
(39:13):
Is Lawrence not working hard enough to improve his game.
Is it the talent around him or was the one
to two years more fluky? Like I think Blake Bortle's
on the jagside are run into the AFC title game
against the Pats, they lost late right one ver, So
like maybe it's just randomness, Like I don't know, But
like the Lawrence one is like baffling. He was supposed
to be the guy Kyler Murray.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Too right, But like the one with Trevor Lawrence, And
again there's no data to sit back this up. But
you know, at Fox one day, one of these guys
comes on the set and I'm like, what's going on
with Trevor Lawrence? And like, oh, that guy doesn't love football.
I was like, what do you mean. They're like, he
doesn't want football to be his thing. Like, oh, there's
Trevor Lawrence, the quarterback. He wants to be like Trevor
Lawrence the human who is married and a good family
(39:55):
guy and goes to church. And I mean, I don't
think that means he's not looking at film or anything,
but I don't. And hey, I'm not gonna lie to you.
When I play my men's basketball league, you know, like
that's everything to me the whole week leading up to
the game. After if we lose, I'm brestfallen. I mean,
like a massive funk.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
I get text sometimes from Jason you do I do
do that?
Speaker 2 (40:14):
Trevor Lawrence apparently is not that guy.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
Now.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Do you want your guy to be that guy who's
all in everything? And then maybe he stresses himself out.
I don't know. They just traded away as left tackle
Cam Robinson. I hadn't seen it, and then Christian Kirk
is down for the season and Brian Thomas is hurt,
and it's like, holy shit, are.
Speaker 3 (40:32):
They just punting the season? Then at this point probably don't.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
I don't know. I mean, Doug Peterson's probably in.
Speaker 3 (40:37):
Trouble, right, Yeah, you would think so. I mean it's
that like mamba mentality piece of it. It's like, do
you want them working and obsessive at a level that
makes them better than everyone else? Or do you want
the balance? And yeah, maybe he just doesn't have that
piece to the equation. That's interesting. I don't know, Trevor,
it's just people are just talking about it.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
But yeah, like Tom Brady, he had that laser for
his mentality, willing to you know, hey, I'm coming back,
you know, and then you know the Giselle got upset
and all that's a blah blah blah. But like, I
don't know what else could explain Trevor Lords. Do you
remember that playoff game clumpson Ohio State?
Speaker 3 (41:11):
Dude? Oh yeah, how good was he?
Speaker 2 (41:14):
The touchdown run, the game winning drive at the end.
And I had a lot of money on Clemson, So
I'll never forget that game. But I love Trevor Lords
like a guy like Sam Donald. I don't know if
this is Kevin O'Connell or is Sam Donald figured stuff
out here in year six or whatever.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
That's a good one. Actually, you know, the other one
that came to mind too when you mentioned Clemson and
big games is Deshaun Watson, which I think has more
you know, evidence to point to, like off the field
distractions on the Watson front, and obviously I think he's
injured now anyways. But the Sam Donald want So that's
another one where everyone's that like that pre draft loved
Donald or like see like that he just needed the
(41:51):
right situation, and it's saying, all right, well, or he
needed time, but so are we not giving Zach Wilson
enough time or a better situation, like is Zach Wilson
actually gonna be good in through four years? Like I
don't know, probably not so. I think Sam Donald's more
of an outlier than most. But it's a good story
and theory. I mean, is there something to like the prospect,
like you know, like in basketball, especially if you ever
(42:11):
looked at guys who were top like two four seven recruits,
like top ten guys out of high school in basketball,
and they go to college and either get hurt or
don't quite perform very well. And then like I Doke
had that year with Zion and Tatum and Reddish right,
and like all three were top ten, but you know
Zion are except for Zion there's they had another guy too,
(42:33):
like one of the Jones was it trade Tis Jones
little brother Trade Jones I think was also the team,
and like three of them were top ten and Zion
wasn't for originally and then he was actually like the
best NBA player for a year or two before he
had all of his issue now to at them obviously
as well, And so is there something to the high
school grade? It's like priors when you're modeling sports like
(42:54):
are the priors for an athlete's upside. Like Sam Donald
go to USC and he was one of the top
recruits going to UC in the best quarterback in his class,
but that wasn't very good in the NFL. But it
was like maybe it was that he was always that good,
he just needed the right situation or the right coaches.
That interesting. So yeah, I don't know, if we went
back and looked at some of those spots, maybe there's
(43:15):
more to that too.
Speaker 2 (43:16):
Where Yeah, let me ask you, are your kids old
enough that they play like local sports?
Speaker 3 (43:21):
Yeah? Yeah, two of them.
Speaker 2 (43:22):
Yeah, Okay, what I don't know if you've seen this yet,
but you know, I've been coaching in soccer and basketball,
and you'll see in second and third grade some of
the best kids like really are head and shoulders above.
Now I don't know why that is early maturing, parents, whatever,
And then you get to sixth seventh grade and it's like, wait,
what about Joe, And he's not the top guy anymore. Meanwhile,
(43:46):
for like two years in early grade, really like he's
the best. So then it starts to eat. And then
last year we saw this big in basketball, this one
kid I'm not naming names but he didn't make the
middle school team. And I was stunned at that because
I thought he was like a pretty good player, and
he took that and he motivated him the next season
and he was like maybe the third best player in
(44:07):
our local league. I was like, Wow, where did this
guy come from?
Speaker 1 (44:10):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (44:10):
Well, he did not make the middle school team, and
he basically worked his ass off. His parents told me
every week, grinding, grind, like, and you put it in work.
And sometimes some of these early maturing kids they're like, oh,
I'm the best, I'm the number one pick, blah blah blah,
and then they just slack off. And meanwhile you've got
these other guys coming up, and they catch up maturity wise,
and they just put in more work. So I don't
(44:31):
know if that applies to the college basketball in football,
you think there's anything there or no.
Speaker 3 (44:37):
I think it's what's so. It's why we all love sport.
It's what's brilliant about in its other work industries too,
Like I guess the Jalen Brunson of it, Like he
was never a top WAK three, he just worked really
really hard and he was like fifth in MVP voting
last year and he plays for the Knicks, and he
was like a second round pick even after Villanova on
winning a championship there and was backing up Luca and
(44:57):
the MAVs and they didn't even want to pay him
ten million a year, which is like hilarious when you
think about that now. They said no to that, said no,
good luck, Like Jalen Brunton just used it to like
work harder and get better, like Austin Reeves whatever are
getting a deal now with the Lakers and like being
pretty good. Like you have those stories and then you
also have the guys that were top that just didn't
ever make it at all, like Jermarcus Russell's right, but
(45:17):
that's like what's so brilliant is like nothing is certain
and what is it about life aspects emotional and physical
attributes and everything that makes impact, whether it's positive or negative.
And it's like one of the reasons why you know
we're trying to do stuff in English football is like
there's there's ways to try to assess all of this
data and do better than other people because it's competitive
(45:38):
at the end of the day. And so anyway, I
just wanted to say, like the general point, I don't
think any of us have the answer. But that's what's
fun about sports.
Speaker 2 (45:44):
Yeah, well we love sports anyways. All right, Preston, good
catching up man, congrats on shaving the beard, and so
it's good that you're back gambling on football. Is this
going to become a regular thing now.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
Or just because literally I was in Vegas for less
than forty eight hours, figured i'd fire away. I actually
hit like a three team NFL parlay that I shouldn't
have bet the next day too. It's like one of
those when you're it's just like beginner's luck, even though
it's like not quite beginners but sort of. Because I
didn't know what I was doing, I fired a three
team favorite parlay that hit. So it was a good
It's a good little weekend. I'll probably call it a day.
Speaker 2 (46:13):
It's like when you're you're single and you're not looking
to meet anybody, you're not and then you go out
and you meet someone when you're least trying or locked in.
That's it. That's just happening.
Speaker 3 (46:21):
Things happen.
Speaker 2 (46:22):
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, all right, Preston, good stuff man, Thanks
a lot, buddy, Good to see you guys.
Speaker 3 (46:26):
Take it easy.
