On today’s episode, Jason brings us wall-to-wall analysis of all week 1 action around the NFL. Can anybody keep up with Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins offense? Are the San Francisco 49ers the most complete team in the NFC? Why did supposed Super Bowl contenders like the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals struggle so much out of the gate? Will Daniel Jones and the New York Giants ever recover from that beatdown they suffered at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys? J-Mac has the answer to all those questions – and more! Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume. This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
What is up straight Fire, fam, It's me Jason McIntyre.
Straight Fire for Monday, September eleventh, The first Sunday in
the NFL books is complete, and it was, Uh, it
was the hell of a Sunday. We'll get through the highlights.
We're not gonna go through every game. Rob g won't
let me. Apparently it's just too much. I know, I

(00:44):
could do over an hour and a half on the
Game's Fox Show, but people don't really want that much content.
They want the big news, the big fun stories, the
hot takes. Oh I got takes on takes, and of
course if you're watching on YouTube, I am rocking out
my Jet shirt Jets. Tonight. I did a massive game
against the Bills Monday Night Football. Usually the MNF opener

(01:07):
is a stack double hitter. They're doing that next week,
I guess because it is September eleventh, you know, a
day infamous in New York history and you know American history.
They just wanted one game, you know, featuring both teams
from New York. It'll be a blast. We'll do best
bets at the end of the podcast, which you know
which way I'm leaning this podcast is gonna be so
NFL centric. We won't even get to the Texas money

(01:30):
line win over Alabama. You guys heard me talk about it.
A great win for Texas. A lot of happening in
college football. We'll get to it later in the week.
NFL's was just so poppin'. I don't know if I
should start by humble bragging that my son and I
are on the verge of a five and zero start
in fantasy football. It was that good of a Sunday.
Aaron Jones coming through. I don't think we're gonna touch
on the Packers, but they were. They look good. With
Jordan Love, I think I have to start the podcast

(01:52):
with what I thought after watching football out here on
the West Coast. Games kickoff at ten am, and and
I'm just sitting in the house all day watching all
of the games. And I watched one game where an
offense looked like it was playing a different sport than
almost every other game I watched. There was a second

(02:14):
game that we'll get too shortly, that kind of looked
like it, but it appeared to me the Miami Dolphins
were playing a different sport than basically every other team
I watched play football Sunday. Now, usually the Chiefs look
like this, but the Dolphins and I had to call
up the box score. Here rang up thirty first downs,
five hundred and thirty six yards, an average yards per

(02:34):
play eight point two yards per play. The Dolphins offense
was a machine. Tyreek Hill eleven catches, two hundred and
fifteen yards. He was unguardable. J C. Jackson, who, if
you guys remember two years ago, was one of the
best cornerbacks in football with the Patriots, got big money.
He got cooked, and they pulled Jackson off of Hill
in the fourth quarter because he was getting roasted so bad.
I know Jackson did have an end zone interception, but

(02:56):
this offense with Wattle, I think I have to double check,
but I think there was a Braxton Barrio sighting or five.
I mean, every time Tua drops back, it's a clean
pocket facing boatsa facing Mack. He didn't get sacked once,
and Tua is unloading someone named Rivers. Crak Craft caught

(03:17):
three passes for forty yards in a touchdown. Braxton Barrios
three for forty two. Durham smythe remember they lost Aseeki
people were like, Oh, what are they gonna do with
tight end? Just plug in Durham's smythe whoever that is
Wattle four for seventy eight. That's almost the output that
Desmond Ritter threw for the entire game for Atlanta. And
you know, it was like a non factor against the Chargers.

(03:40):
This Miami offense is unbelievable. And folks, we talked about
the schedule, it is absolutely brutal. But I said it
in the preseason. I went to Vegas in August. This
team scares me offensively. When Toua was healthy last year
MVP candidate and they were at the top of the division.
This is a team that can be an offensive juggernaut.
Miami showed it against the Chargers. And by the way,

(04:01):
Chargers came out healthy. Brandon Staley, we said he was
on the hot Seaton. Brandon Staley gives up over five
hundred yards in the opener. There was zero confidence that
that defense could get a stop. Derwin James played well.
I don't remember Bosa's name being called often. And Mike McDaniel,

(04:23):
I know he got the offensive genius tag and he
kind of stole that from McVeigh. But right now it
looks like McDaniel is playing a completely different sport than
what the other coaches are doing. The pre snap movement
is every down there's something happening. There's movement, so Tua
can read the defense and then as soon as the
ball is snapped, you just see guys spraying out in

(04:44):
many differents. It's like a water gun attack and you
just see stuff going everywhere, and I mean the Chargers
looked dumbfounded. Nothing could stop it. Remember the Chargers had
that great game plan last year. They kind of clogged
the middle of the field, press coverage. None of that worked.
It looked like they pulled Tyreek off the line a
little bit, or they were moving him around a lot
because J. C. Jackson could not press him and Tyreek

(05:05):
Hill was unstoppable. This Miami offense is terrifying. And here's
where it gets interesting. The new Egle Patriots defense looked
great against the Eagles. Jalen Hurts had a worse game
than any game he had last year. The Eagles offense,
I think had like two hundred and fifty yards lower
than any game they had last season when they went
to the Super Bowl. So the Patriots defense is pretty
real deal Ken the Patriots and Belichick slow down Miami

(05:29):
next week. That's gonna be one of the biggest storylines
alongside Jets Cowboys, of course. But this Miami offense, if
it gets rolling. I know the schedule is the toughest
in the league. There's a reason I had this team
as a potential Super Bowl team. You saw Tua not
dropping back, not holding the ball along. It was like
bing bang boom, balls out and guys are wide open.
The speed this team has is terrifying. Rob listen, I

(05:53):
like the Chargers. I like Staley. The Chargers were my
backup Super Bowl pick if I was allowed to have one. Again.
It's week one. I'm not writing anybody off. I'm not
writing the Chargers off. I think they were a good
spot this week going on the road. They don't play
as well at home for whatever reason. But I do
believe this Miami team right now is the scariest offense

(06:13):
in the league. And it's really not close outside of
McDaniel's old offense that he used to work with San Francisco,
which we'll get too shortly. But Rob g this Miami team, Listen,
I don't like the Dolphins. I'm a Jetsky. They looked unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Absolutely, And I told you last week during our preseason
picks that I was torn between Miami and Buffalo for
that last wildcard berth in the East because I have
your Jets winning the division and it ultimately came down
to me trusting Josh Allen more than to a tongue
bay LOA. I can't say I want to go back
on that statement, but I kind of want to go
back on that statement, all right. Yesterday twenty eight to

(06:47):
forty five, four to sixty six, three touchdowns, including the
game winning drive when the Chips were down, They're down
four in the last few minutes of the game, he
goes five of seven for seventy one yards in a
touchdown to A. I know that he gets his reputation
because he's been hurt and the concussions obviously really scary.
The wordy might actually retire this past offseason over the

(07:08):
last twelve games. Saw this stat online where he does
not leave due to injury. I know that's kind of
a weird spec thing to say, but roll with me here.
Three hundred and nine passing yards per game, over two
touchdowns a game, and for you fantasy nerds twenty one
and a half fantasy points per game if you can
keep to a upright and they did this yesterday again

(07:29):
without Tron Armstead, their starting tackle. If you can keep
him upright, he can deal it with anybody in the
NFL as good as anyone this side of Patrick Mahomes.
This Miami Dolphins team is scary. They got speed everywhere
their defense. I know they kind of got lit up
themselves by that Chargers offense, but there's not many teams

(07:49):
that are gonna be able to score with Miami. So
you're gonna see that pass rush headline by former UCLA
brewin Jalen Phillips causing havoc. He's the one who actually
closed the game there at the end on Justin Herbert.
So this Miami Dolphins team is the real deal. Holy Field.
And if you're in the AFC, if you thought it
was deep before, lookout, this Miami team's real.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
I'm kind of with you on that. And you know
you brought up the Chargers, so a lot of people, oh,
Kellen Moore is gonna open up the offense. Well not really.
And this is a bit of a crazy stat They
had forty rushes Rob against only thirty three pass attempts.
Now the run game two hundred and thirty four yards.
From my layman's point of view, I think the Chargers
were a little scared of the Miami offense, and they said,
you know what, We're gonna take the ball out of

(08:31):
two his hands and we're gonna run it. And it
was a heavy Josh Kelly ninety one yards and heavy
Austin Eckler running through holes that I could have run through. Hell, Rob,
you played high school football. I did not. I sure
as hell no, you could have run through that one
hole where Eckler pealed off like fifty five yards. It
was massive. They were like laughing about it, the announcers.
But Mike Williams gets a concussion, so the injuries begin.

(08:53):
And if I'm a Chargers fan, like, ultimately, I'm happy
with the game. You were in position to win a
hell in position a tie. But you notice Fonngio, Rob
dialed up blitzes. He wasn't blitzing a ton and then
on the final drive he's like, I'm not giving Herbert
any time. He's gonna kill us, and they sent the house.
It looked like I don't know if it was a
cover zero blitz, but there's a lot of dudes coming

(09:14):
out of him and Herbert had no chance. A good
win from Miami not the worst loss for the Chargers,
given that the Chiefs lost and the Broncos lost and
your Raiders are now first in the Vision, but for
sure Miami has to come away very giddy about their
prospects in the AFC. It is just one game and
you don't want to overreact, but I do want to
now pivot to McDaniel's old house, which is San Francisco.

(09:35):
And I, by the way, I did go three and
two in the million dollar contest. But what hurts is
when you hype a game for months on this podcast
on the Herd, and then a quarter in you realize,
holy cal I'm off on this. I was wrong. And
that's the Pittsburgh San Francisco game, which from my point
of view, was essentially the second biggest surprise after how

(09:57):
good Miami looked the entire first Sunday. Pittsburgh did not
have a first down until under the two minute warning
in the first half. San Francisco absolutely came out and
just blew their doors off. They were sick of hearing
about Mike Tomlin and the underdog Steelers at home, and
they just kicked their ass. It was not even close.

(10:19):
Christian McCaffrey had a nasty touchdown run and I'm not
going no cap, no cap from your boy here after
week one, but I wish I had a Rock Purty
MVP ticket. And you can laugh all you want Brock
Purty against Pittsburgh. And by the way, TJ. Watt had
three sacks, forced fumble, fumble recover. TDJ Wat was a beast.
Rock Purty was awesome, dealing left and right. Listen, if

(10:40):
San Francisco goes twelve thirteen, fourteen wins, I'll just tell you,
Brock Purty's gonna be in the MVP mix if he
could stay healthy. He looked awesome, and people can scoff
seventh round pick the one tying bind between Miami and
San Francisco. Besides McDaniel and Shanahan. I'm not saying these
are the two best teams in the league all those
San France certainly up there. They looked the best Sunday.

(11:04):
Neither of them has who would be perceived as a
superstar quarterback that's making one of the highest paid salaries
in the league neither of them. And to me, that
is huge for in a league where Dak Prescott to
make it forty five million or whatever it is, and
Daniel Jones is a forty million and Deshaun Watson fully guaranteed.
It's the guys who aren't paid as heavily, Brock, Perdy

(11:26):
and Tua who looked the best I thought in Week one. Now, yes,
other quarterbacks did look solid. No, Deshaun Watson did not,
but he got the win. Joe Burrow just got the
highest paid contract ever and basically vomited his way to
I think eighty two yards passing and then they just
pulled him halfway through the fourth quarter and they were like, no, Moss,
it's over. I don't know Rob his San Francisco team

(11:50):
in an NFC where we like the Eagles, but they
did not look particularly crisp. We know the Cowboys are
gonna be very good, and they looked Hella Crisp. San
Francisco is probably the most complete team in the NFC,
right we trust at least I don't trust Dak Prescott
in the postseason, gab. He hasn't proven it yet, And
I just think when you look at the weapons. By

(12:11):
the way, Dallas did win forty to nothing Sunday, we'll
talk about it briefly. But if you look at their
offensive output, like you know, dak had like one hundred
and thirty hundred fifty yards passing, nothing super impressive. They
wont with the special teams touchdown, a defensive touchdown the rain,
and then the defense which had seven sacks. But San
Francisco offensively plus defensively looks to me like the most
complete team in the NFC early in the season.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
I would agree with you. And people are gonna say
that because it was a blowout and it was so
early that you're like, hey, well Pittsburgh, yous just they're
not that good. You know that that's not true at all.
There's a reason why Pittsburgh has a lot of hyde
coming to this season. Their defense is one of the
best in football. Don't let what San francisquent did them
for you. They are a legitimate, you know, contender in

(12:54):
that division in the AFC North. But if you just
look at the boxer, I don't want to box score watch,
but if you just look at the boxscer and tell
you the whole story of this game, this is how
the drives started for San Francisco. Defense goes forces the
three and out, they offense goes touchdown. Defense gets the interception,
offense marching down field goal. Defense forces the three and out.
Offense scores a long touchdown. Defense forces the three and out.

(13:15):
Offense gets a field goal. Defense forces the three and out,
but touchdown, and then they come right back and score
touchdown there in the second half. So not only did
they win because we saw a lot of teams win,
you know, you mentioned Dallas, Dallas won because their defense
was just unreal. Nobody, not even the Miami Dolphins, who
I just mentioned a minute ago, Nobody was as dominant

(13:36):
on both sides of the ball as the San Francisco
forty nine ers team was. We were texting before we
started recording, was like, hey, it was San Francisco that good,
it was Pittsburgh that bad. And it took us about
a minute and say no, no, no, San Francisco was
just awesome. They throttled them. They have so many weapons
on the offense. Deebo Samuel, who's probably their second best player,
was like an afterthought because Brandon and I, you and
Christian McAffrey did all the heavy lived, George Kittle might

(13:58):
not have even played. They were worried about him, and
then he just shows them like, oh, I'm just gonna
show hihim block for you, don't worry about it, and
what you know, he's the best blocking tight end in
football as long as brock Perdy can stay upright and
him just be getting back from this elbow, you know,
surgery this quickly. But if he can stay up right,
similar to Tua, I don't think there's anyone that can
compete with them in the NFC. Yeah, if they're right

(14:19):
tackle fee, if they're healthy, they have more weapons than
Dallas does. Offensively, I think that their defense is right
on par with Philadelphias. So like, if those are your
two big contenders, I'm gonna trust San Francisco in either
of those situations. I know it's early, it's only week one.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
You don't want to.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
Overreact, but everything that we thought good about San Francisco
coming into the season ended up coming to fruition in
a big way on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Yeah, the right tackle for San France, I mean, he
got crushed, but it was it's TJ Watt, you know,
so is it like right? It's not a big deal.
You're facing one of the best in the league. Yeah,
San Francisco looks scared ver good. I don't know. I
remember some people were hyping up Seattle, you know, like
could they be a contender? I didn't even have them
in the playoffs. They're leading at halftime and then the
Rams just destroy them. A bad whiff from me. I

(15:11):
did not put them in the contest. And again, we're
not gonna go over every game. But you know, you
miss some things. You think, Okay, the Rams are gonna
suck this season, and then you think, okay, Seattle's got them,
and you forget which I did that Like throughout his career,
McVeigh has dominated Pete Carroll. Even last year when McVeigh

(15:32):
had backup quarterbacks, the Rams were within I think three
or four points in both games, like starting John Woolford
of Baker Mayfield. That's how McVeigh just dominates Carroll. I
just that's a miss. Now, Seattle let at halftime and
then the Rams ran away with it in the second half.
But it was like, that's just a miss on my part.
I don't know another thing I missed, and I think

(15:52):
it was was it TA that came on here and
talked about it. I'm not sure which guest it was,
but someone came on and was talking aboutquarterbacks who don't
play in the preseason, and a lot of these guys
did not play in the preseason at all, and then
they came out in Week one and looked awful, and
then you could tell the football is not crisp. Some
of these one PM games were pretty ugly, like bad football,

(16:15):
but I'm not gonna hear it's bad football because it's
actual football, and you know, there's fantasy and gambling and
so like Harball came out and was like, I might
need to rethink playing some of these guys in the
preseason because Lamar Jackson did not look particularly great. I
think he had two fumbles lost, one had a bad interception.
The offense did not really click. I mean they were

(16:35):
able to beat and cover against the Texans only because
the Texans offensive line was total garbage. CJ. Stroud, by
the way, all the rookie quarterbacks lost did not cover,
but like Baltimore did not look crisp, and the other
one Baltimore by the way, I had major injuries, which
we'll get into later this week, and that's probably gonna
lead me to a Bengals bet. But it's early. You know,

(16:57):
there was some other offenses that just did not particularly
look good, the Bengals being one of them. Burrow, you know,
had the calf injury and ended up sitting. But I
don't know, Rob, You look around the league and some
of these teams, like you know, Saints offense didn't really click,
Minnesota Vikings. You know, they put up big numbers, but
when it came down to crunch time, it was like

(17:18):
they could not come through, like Kirk Cousins red zone interception,
couple fumbles, and I think my gut tells me some
of these coaches are going to rethink whether or not
they play their guys in the preseason. Nick Siriani ultimately
was one of those who came out and was like,
our offense looked like crap. You know, they lose their
offensive coordinator. I know they jump out to the sixteen
to nothing lead, but that was all because of turnovers

(17:40):
by Mac Jones and the Patriots. And I think I
saw stat Rob where the Eagles had something like four
straight four and outs and that only happened once like
all of last season. But the Philly offense looked confused
by what the Patriots are doing, and that's why you
don't want to overreact to one game, like, yeah, Mac

(18:00):
Jones didn't look great and then come back mod he
was fine and Patriots probably should have pulled that win out.
But is it because they confused the Eagles with new
look that they weren't ready for, or is the Eagles
offense just everybody's ready for it given what they saw
last year. I don't know we'll need more than one game. Obviously,
Eagles host the Vikings. I think next week in our
favored by over a touchdown. It's gonna be interesting. Eagles

(18:24):
crushed him last year. But yeah, I don't know, Rob,
I'm not a big player. Guys in the preseason could
because of risking injury. But is it that big of
a deal if you play like three series. I mean,
clearly some of these teams like the offensive output. I
think unders went eleven and four on the day and
in the one PM slate, I think every under hit

(18:44):
or it was close to every or no, every first
half under I think hit something insane like that. But
bottom line is offenses did not look good.

Speaker 3 (18:52):
Yeah, I think that's an understatement. I think of the day,
and don't hold me to this because you know, I
obviously I have other things to do. I didn't have
time to know whether or not every single team and
every starter that played in all the preseason, Like I
just I don't got time to watch every game like that.
But according to Yahoo, there were seven teams that did

(19:12):
not play starters in the preseason, the Lions, the Chargers,
the Seahawks, the Vikings, the Bengals, the Ravens, the Cowboys,
and if you just look at offense, because usually at
this point of the season, it's always the offense that's
behind the defense. Every form NFL player will tell you that.
They say the defense it's easier to catch on quickly
because a lot of it's hey, seaball hit ball. We

(19:32):
don't got to make these two complicated. The offensive line
is still gelling, the receivers in the quarterback are still
trying to get their timing down. We can be aggressive
and cause havoc, and that's what we can do early
in the season, not till later in the season that
the offense start getting on track. But if you look
at those teams outside of the Chargers, none of those
offenses were very impressive. The Lions offense only scored fourteen points.

(19:53):
The Chargers I mentioned, they were incredible. The Seahawks going
against a very depleted Los Angeles Rams defense looked terrible.
The Minnesota Vikings, I know they put up big yards,
but I believe Kirk Cousins had three turnovers and that's
why they lost that game. You mentioned Joe Burrow in
the Bengals. This is now the second consecutive season where
he missed all of training camp and then started off,

(20:13):
you know, putting up a goosegg basically. You know, last
year was against the Steelers that think get four interceptions
in one game, and this one couldn't even get past midfield.
The Ravens you mentioned, and the Dallas Cowboys who were
gonna get to in a second. The defense carried them
in that one. They're offense didn't do anything to rite
home about. So I think it's something that I don't
know if it's gonna see you spilling over into week two,
you know, to be this bad, obviously, I think they'll

(20:34):
get better, but it's not nothing right. I think there's
something to be said about having some level of continuity
and comfortability as you get into the regular season. It's
why in college you see most of these teams play
like Division three North Dakota Tech State, University of the
Children in Week one, just so they can get that
tune up. And these NFL teams they don't really have

(20:54):
that luxury it's supposed to be in the preseason. They're
just choosing, for whatever reason, not to take advantage it.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Yeah, and you're right, a lot of these teams have
new offensive coordinators or new head coaches, and I guess
we can expect a bit of a learning curve. But
like you know, Minnesota, I mean they posted a lot
of yards, like you said, justin Jefferson, I think had
one hundred and fifty yards receiving, and they just ultimately
couldn't get in when it mattered. And the way I

(21:22):
saw it, and I did put Tampa thanks to ta
If you guys signed up for his website, he made
some very clear points about listen, Tampa may not be great,
but early in the season, when healthy, their guys should
be able to compete. And remember last year Minnesota in
the regular season eleven and zero in close games, and
a lot of that is did the ball bounce your way?

(21:44):
Did you get some lucky turnover. Did you get the
ball hits the upright and goes in as opposed to
Dnking dunking the other doinking the other way and it
went eleven and zero In the regular season, the first
game of the season is a close one and they
only had three possessions in the second half. That's that's unlucky.

(22:05):
Who thinks Tampa can have a nine minute drive spanning
the third and some of the fourth quarter. It's like
that's unheard of. Like they got a little unlucky. Kirk
Cousins a red zone turnover, the two fumbles like Baker
may Let's be real, Baker Mayfield wasn't great, Tampa was
not great. Tampa got a little lucky, and that's the problem.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
Rob.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
I don't know what you're seeing on social media, but
I had a lot of Yahoo's coming after me. You
said the Rams were gonna stink. You were wrong. You
don't know anything you said Tampa. And I don't really
reply to these guys unless maybe they followed. Then I'll engage.
But I have to ask Rob. People seem to struggle
with this. You won the season opener, congrats, versus you're

(22:48):
gonna be good or you're not. I didn't think the
Rams look particularly great. Seattle, by the way, lost both
their starting tackles in that game. And then I'm sure
you saw the clip. At one point Aaron Donald just
started to wreck Seattle and he broke through the offensive
line and Gino Smith, I guess was micd up drop

(23:10):
back and he goes, oh my gosh, it's just screaming
because Aaron Donald was coming at him like his life
was on the line. Pretty hilarious, But yeah, like the
Rams weren't amazing. You like what you see from the
backup Williams. I think everybody's gonna grab him in fantasy
because Cam Akers ain't that dude the kid from BYU.
I think I said it on this podcast. I know
I said it on the Herd, But you know, I

(23:33):
told you guys, Matt Stafford now bought a house on
the beach, so he's in town, and I know some
people in and around Safford who's Stafford clicking with? It
wasn't Van Jefferson, it wasn't too too out well, it
was the kid from b YU. I got him in
one of my leagues most targeted guy in Week one
had over one hundred yard. I had a great debut,
and you could see it like Stafford and him clicked

(23:55):
in the off season. The guy's a grinder, and like
it's that little kind of information that helps in fantasy
and in gambling. You know, Eagles did get the cover
of four and a half. That was a little on
the lucky side. But you're always just rob trying to
get any kernel you can. What I don't understand is

(24:15):
how the hell did the Raiders beat the Broncos. I
know they're your team and you're watching closely and living
and dying with vy Jimmy garoppolo play, but like the
onside kick was super close. It looked like maybe you
review it, but you can't burn a challenge on that.
On the opening play and then the Raiders come down
and score. They bottle up Josh Jacobs. I think the

(24:36):
Broncos were leading in the fourth thirteen to ten, and
they were driving in the red zone. You're like, oh,
touchdown ice is this game? Of course they have to
settle for a field goal, don't. I still don't know
how the Raiders won that game, but maybe you can
tell me.

Speaker 3 (24:50):
I wish I could tell yo. They want that game
to look if you wanted to say that this is
one of those things where you will overreact or you
hit the panic button or whatever. If I'm a Raider fan,
which I am, to the rest of your Raider fans,
if you want to feel good about yourself because we
beat Denver on the road, don't, okay like that. This
was not a great performance. Neither one of those teams
played particularly well. If you look again, just look at

(25:12):
the numbers. The Raiders had two hundred and sixty one
total yards, the Denver had two hundred and sixty that's it.
Penalties the Raiders had ten for ninety seven, Denver had
ten for eighty three, and each of them had crucial
late game penalties that almost cost a team the game.
The Raiders roughing the punter that would have forced the

(25:33):
three and now they didn't come back at score and
Denver did. And then Denver late in the game on
the game winning drive basically a game clinching drive helmet
to helmet hit that effectively ended the game for the Raiders.
If I had a pinpoint one thing, though, it's that
the early returns on this Sean Payton Russell Wilson marriage

(25:54):
are not looking great, Okay, Now, in the first half,
Russell Wilson was pretty seventeen of nineteen, one to twenty five,
two touchdowns, passer rating on one to twenty nine, and
then in the second half ten of fifteen for like
fifty yards. Yeah, I mean, you're not beating anybody like that.

(26:14):
And I don't know how much of that is Sean Payton,
you know, putting the shackles on him, because they last
time they let Russ Cook, you know, they lose a lot.
So maybe it's a we want you to just manage
the game completed a high percentage, lean on the defense.
But if that's what he's gonna be asked to do,
then it's easily the worst contract in football. If you

(26:34):
have twenty seven for thirty four for one seventy seven,
like that's Desmond Ritter numbers. Oh, that's that's what you
would expect a rookie quarterback in his first start, you know, CJ.
Stroud to do, Anthony Richardson to do, not a Super
Bowl champion, one of the highest paid quarterbacks in football.

(26:56):
So yeah, I mean I'll take the win as a
Raider fan, But yeah, it wasn't that impressive, and I
think it says more about Danver than it does about
the Raiders.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
I gotta defend Russ a little. Listen, he was efficient,
but they have no with Jerry Judy out. That offense
has no game breakers, Like there's just no way to stink.
They can't scheme up guys getting open.

Speaker 1 (27:15):
I guess.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
I think they had two plays that went twenty one
yards and that's it. Like everything else was like played
in like a tiny space and a dump offs to
tight ends for like four and six yards. Listen, if
Peyton hits that onside kick, I'm sure the game is
totally different. They get the momentum and everything. I thought
that should have been a Denver win at home. You're
in the inside the five yard line up three, Like

(27:40):
on some level, it's like, what is going up six
gonna do? That just seemed like a non shun Peyton move.
You couldn't dial up your best or your second best
play and then you're pitting them deep even if you
don't get it. I didn't love that, and then they
end up losing the game. So it didn't work out
for Peyton, which is a bummer because I think the
Broncos could do It. Was nice to see the Saints

(28:01):
get a dub for my alt season win totals. That
being said, we'll wrap up before we get to Jets Bets,
Jets Bills bets with I have three teams don't overreact to.
If you do want to overreact to someone, it's the
Cleveland Browns defense. Now. I know the game was in
the rain, but rob you play fantasy. We were facing

(28:24):
we we my son and I were facing T Higgins
and I keep seeing a zero zero. I'm like, what's
going on? And did he get hurt? T Higgins eight targets,
zero catches? Wow, Brown's defense was swarming. I saw the
stat seven three and outs for the Bengals. Now, yes,
it was in the rain, but that Jim Schwartz defense.
And again this is another no to ta he put

(28:45):
me on this, Like the Browns defense with Schwartz could
be very nasty. Miles Garrett a couple of big plays,
and I know they played Burrow well, but this Cleveland
defense man Deshaun Watson, did not look great. I'm not
gonna go deep into it, but if you want to
overreact on anyone, it's like, whoa is this Cleveland defense?
For real? We shall see, but don't overreact. Bears fans
freaking out because they get boat raced by the Packers.

(29:07):
Number one, Historically, the Packers have owned you. Looks like
they still own you. I wouldn't freak out because you
guys got crushed. Number two reason is Justin Fields has
so many new parts on that offense, Like DJ Moore
didn't really look like he was a part of the offense.
It looked like they're trying some things out. I think

(29:27):
it's a take a deep breath. I still think they're
gonna be okay. They did not look like a playoff team.
A lot of self inflicted wounds, But I think the
Bears are gonna be fine. Like they're gonna be okay.
Second team, don't overreact to the Tampa Bay win. We
kind of touched on this. Tampa Bay is not going
to be a good football team, Guys just putting it
out there. A couple of things broke their way. They

(29:48):
got the dub Congrats. They're not gonna be good this year.
I just know that. And the final team would be
the Bengals last year. It might be the last two years.
I don't know, but I know last year for sure,
they ended up in a game where Borrow throws like
four picks and had a fumble against Pittsburgh. It was
a nightmare and they ended up still turning it around

(30:09):
and making the playoffs. And so after that I thought
about it, I was like, hmm, let me see which
teams lost in Week one and made the playoffs. In
twenty twenty one, there were four. The Cowboys lost to
Tampa by two, still made the playoffs. Buffalo lost to
Pittsburgh twenty three sixteen at in Buffalo. People were like, oh,
what happened in Buffalo? They ended up being fine. The

(30:32):
Titans got smacked by Kyler Murray thirty eight thirteen in Tennessee.
I remember that because I was on Arizona. The Titans
ended up the number one seat despite losing badly in
Week one. And then the Packers with Aaron Rodgers lost
thirty eight three to the Saints. Do you guys remember
that the Packers ended up being the number one seed.

(30:53):
So twenty twenty one, four teams lost in Week one
still made the playoffs. Twenty twenty two, once you know it,
four more teams. Bengal lost to Pittsburgh forty nine Ers
lose in the Monsoon to UH Chicago. The Jags lost
twenty two, twenty eight, twenty two to Washington. I remember
that I was on the Jags etn with a costly fumble.

(31:13):
You remember, see how I remember the losses, rob and
the Jags made the playoffs, and then Dallas got smacked
by Tampa. It was either Thursday night. It might have
been Thursday an football, yeah, caause Tampa I think won
the Super Bowl two years ago. And Tampa smacks Dallas
nineteen three. Everybody's like, oh, Dallas is in trouble. They
win twelve games and make the playoffs. Bottom line, don't overreact.
It's just week one, rob Any closing thoughts before we

(31:36):
get to Jets bills, and again that I'm just so geeked.

Speaker 3 (31:40):
About just one and we've been teasing it all show.
My one don't overreact is to a very small minority
of our listeners. But I know there's at least three
or four of you out there, all you Daniel Jones Truthers. Oh,
don't overreact, all right, I know. Oh, the four years
one to sixty had people a little bit skiptic, except

(32:00):
for a handful of people like Greg Jennings, friend of
the show, who still thinks Daniel Jones's top ten quarterback. Oh,
I personally don't know if Daniel Jones is a good
quarterback right now. Okay, I'm not saying that he is.
I'm not saying that he isn't. What I'm saying is
when you are pressured the way that he was pressured
last night, seven sacks into two interceptions, one of them
being a pick six, a block field goal for a touchdown,
five forced fumbles. It's damn near impossible for me to

(32:25):
tell you whether or not that quarterback is any good
when he's running for his life as soon as he
gets the ball in the snap. So, if you are
buying stock in Daniel Jones, which again I know there's
only a handful of you, but those of you who did,
don't sell it just yet. I think it's almost impossible
for an offensive line to get any worse than it
was last night against Dallas. If you're holding on to

(32:47):
Daniel stock, don't sell right now. If anything, buy the
dip because it can.

Speaker 2 (32:52):
Only go up from here. It can only go up
from here. What about your boy? Dania Jones? Vanilla Vic
thirteen rushes forty five three yards.

Speaker 3 (33:01):
See, there's something to be said about it.

Speaker 2 (33:03):
I mean three yout how about reverting to the old
Daniel Jones, the turnover machine where he's like running out
of bounds and says, let me throw across my body
and try to make a play and then he throws.
You're like, bro, what are you doing? Interception Stefan Gilmore diving.
It's like he's not good.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
The only thing I can say positive about Daniel Jones
honestly about him from last night's game is he kept
getting up. There's a lot of guys who when they
take a pounding like that would just stay on the
ground or say, hey, take me out, I'm done. And
to his credit, either that or because Brian Dable just
hates him, he stayed in damn near the whole game
and was continually getting hit in the waning moments of

(33:41):
the of the fourth quarter. So shout out to Daniel
Jones for getting up and and again, if you are
a believer in Daniel Jones, just hold tight.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Oh please, you you missed that opportunity to sell stock.
Now they do have next week. Maybe he bounces back Arizona.
They did not look good against Washington. I had Washington
in the contest asanine pick by me, but who cares.

Speaker 1 (34:05):
The only thing better than sitting on your couch watching
the games is making money while you do it. Here's
your best bet Monday Night football.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
I'm seeing as we record this. Currently, Buffalo is a
two and a half point favorite at Bet Chris two
at the super book Draft Kings, which you know we're
trying to give away money here on the podcast, Draft
Kings has Buffalo minus two with a total of forty
five and a half. This is gonna sound super homersh

(34:40):
but the only play is the Jets. Here we talked
a little bit about the divisional underdogs. In Week one.
They were four and two, and then the Giants did
not show up, so they're divisional dogs four and three.
They were on a twenty wait divisional home dogs were
on a twenty one and five heater. I haven't tell
you that, but I do know Seattle lost as a

(35:01):
divisional home dog. Giants lost, did not cover as divisional
home dog. Colts lost and did not cover, so a
little regression. I just think this Jets defensive front. Now.
We talked about continuity earlier, Rob did and the Jets
have a new quarterback, new offensive coordinator. What else do

(35:27):
they have? New right tackle, new right tackle, new running back,
a lot of newness, so it could take a while.
They only played everybody in the third preseason game against
the Giants for like what three series against backups, so
the offense could be a slog. And the problem is
you can't get down fourteen to nothing to Buffalo. They'll

(35:48):
just pin their ears back in that pass rush. We'll
get to you. Fortunately, the Jets have this defense that's
just exciting and unstoppable. And last year they played Josh Allen,
super tough, got the cover twice, got the win once.
And here's the weird thing, rob and again, I don't
know if coaches think like this, but I just all

(36:12):
I can compare to is myself. By the way, I
am back in as a soccer coach assistant for my
daughter's team and we got the win in week one.
You don't really care, but this is getting into the
mind of me as a coach, Like when I coach
hoops or a coach soccer for the kids. I'm always scouting.
I'm always thinking like, Okay, we're playing this team, you know,

(36:34):
are we gonna do this? I'm always thinking about that
or almost losing sleep when we're winning, and it's like
the playoffs. I'm not even kidding, Like I think about
this in my head a lot. I wonder how many
Jets players Sunday night, we're watching the Cowboys defense bully
the shit out of the Giants offensive line and say,
oh my gosh, we got to face these guys in

(36:56):
next week on a short week. We better beat Buffalo.
I just don't know if it's getting in the mind
of the players or the coaches, like this is a
massive game for the Jets, humongous. You don't want to
start Z one to one National TV game at home

(37:16):
divisional opponent, lose and then have to go on a
short week to Dallas. Okay, we saw the injury report.
Makay Beckton had an illness tour through the team. Some
other guys got sick, Dwayne Brown questionable, Brieste Hall questionable.
I'm sure they're all going to play. But it's just like,
the vibes on my end are not great. A little nervous,
obviously a little nervy because you see the reaction like

(37:40):
Bengals fans are like, oh, oh my god, what the problem,
Like chill my problem with the Jets is they're the
team I root for. We have the longest playoff drought
in the NFL, and the schedule the first six weeks
is brutal. We just need to get the three and three.
That's it. Get two, three and three through six and
we're I get we're a lock for the player if

(38:00):
everybody's healthy. So Rob, I would think that this game
is super important on so many levels that we see
maybe some trickeration now. I don't know if the Jets
will be ready for it because there's so much newness,
and I know Salah, if his defense keeps him in

(38:21):
the game, is gonna want to play error On the
side of conservative. It sounds like Dalvin Cook and Brisall
are gonna probably split carries. I don't have Breeshall starting
in fantasy because of that, but miss Buffalo defense has
been soft against the run. I think if the Jets
offensive line is healthy, they'll be fine, and I think
the Jets defensive line ultimately will win this game. I'm

(38:43):
very curious to see sauce on digs and I will
go with a Jets twenty three Bills twenty final score.
And your boy is borderline and sufferable. Tomorrow, Rob on
the pot. I don't know that. That's probably a little Homers.
By the way, the total forty five and a half.

(39:03):
And you guys heard the DraftKings ad like, if you
put money in an account, you can then get free
money to bet on some of these games. Now week
two there will be another offer coming. I don't see
how you can't not bet on the night games Primetime Action.
You got to have some skin in the game. Your
boy went one and oh with Chief Lions money line

(39:26):
on Thursday two and oh with Giants Cowboys under barely.
What a sweat that was in the rain. It's rare
that you get in the you have to sweat an
under when one team's getting shut out. But there we are.
And I'm gonna try to make it three and oh
because I will be betting the Jets. Not massive, not
a huge bet for me, not going going five figures
on this one. Sorry, guys, just not not happened. You

(39:48):
can't do it in week one. But I do like
the Jets here, Rob, and I'm taking the points.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
I'm with you, and this is I know that you're
a Jets fan and you're obviously diving really deep into
this one. So you probably are at a point now
where I would call it paralysis by analysis, like you're
so deep in the weeds that you're almost second guessing
and third guessing every you know thought you've had about
this game. I've been feeling great about this one for
about a week and a half now. I think that,

(40:17):
like we talked about on the preseason predictions podcast, I
think Buffalo is due to have some sort of regression.
I think they're the one team that, of the heavy hitters,
you're most likely to kind of take a step back.
I'm really buying into this Jets team, and mostly it
is because of the defense. I think the defense early
on is going to carry the day for them while
the offense gets on track. I think this is going
to be a very ugly game. So I think the

(40:39):
under is absolutely if you're gonna bet big, bet the
under big. It's gonna look exactly like a lot of
the games we saw in the early slate on Sunday
morning out here in the west, afternoon in the East.
And I think the Jets are gonna win it outright,
But if you're gonna give me the two points, then
I'll take it. So I like the Jets and the
under in this one.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
Yeah, I don't know. I guess. I guess you got
to think about the under. We both like the under
and the Jets, which might be scary. I don't know,
but it's weird. Like Jordan Love did not look particularly great.
Now I know, he had three touchdown passes and they
got the win. He didn't look great. There was a
lot of yak from Aaron Jones, my guy, But I'm

(41:20):
just really curious how Aaron Rogers is gonna look in
New York under the lights stadium is gonna be rocking.
I saw stat that Aaron Rodgers has won his last
nine Monday night football games. I mean that totally is irrelevant,
but it's still like, oh, big game, national TV audience.
Hell yeah, Aaron's gonna show up. I just can't get

(41:41):
over how excited I am. I saw in our calendar
there is I'm not gonna say what it is, but there,
you know, the wife puts something in the calendar that
is school issue related and almost like scoffed, like a excuse,
like I don't see it. I mean, come on, Monday
night football, Jets, Come on, Jets, Bills, you think I'm

(42:04):
missing this This is one where Rob I'll probably have
two TVs, one live and then another to like rewind
and be looking at specific players because that offensive line
is gonna tell the season. That's gonna be so huge
and maybe you guys will better know, maybe you won't,
but it's gonna be a fun night in Casa de McIntyre.
We'll be back tomorrow to talk about all of it.
