Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntire.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up, straight Bam, It's me Jason McIntyre, Straight
Fire for Monday, July fifteenth. It's good to be back,
Ladies and germs. Yes, your boy. It's been a whirlwind
three weeks, some travel and some family members in town.
(00:32):
And obviously we got lucky at FS one with soccer
blocking some of the days, so I actually got some
days off, which is rare. Dark days, Oh, I love those.
We can't wait till the calendar comes out and you're like, oh,
what days are dark? What day do I have off?
Because you never have days off? And I, you know,
I can't rarely take sick days. But this last one,
tried not to do too much work, took the kids
to Europe for the first time. A lot of fun London, Amsterdam.
(00:57):
I had a strange experience in like it not strange,
just you know, listen again, I do a podcast, I'm
Alm on the Herd blah blah blah, it's fun whatever.
And out here in La yes, some people will notice
you and whatever. And when I had gone to Nashville,
I had a couple of people notice me, which is fine.
In America. You expect something, sports fans whatever. So you know,
(01:21):
in London, I'm not expecting anyone to say anything. So
we go into the restaurant first night, and as we're leaving,
this guy comes up. J Mack, huge fan, this British guy.
I'm like, how do you even watch a show with
the time difference. He's like, oh, I watch on YouTube
every day and I listened to a podcast. I was like,
ooh nice. He's like, tell rob G what's up. I
was like wow, wow. And you know, so I chalk
(01:43):
it out here that I like to, you know, when
my family witnesses this stuff, so I can act like
I'm such a clown. I'm like, hey, are you seeing this?
You know, we make a joke out of it. So
later on I go into or in Covenant Garden, which
is kind of this like touristy area. We're killing time
before the next thing to do, and I walk into
some sneaker store with my daughter. She's looking at these
sneakers and this I hear, excuse me, mister McIntyre. And
(02:07):
I turned around and it's like some woman and I
was like, oh, shoot, did I drop my wallet? Did
I leave a credit card somewhere? And she goes, you're
mister McIntyre, and I was like, yeah. She's like, oh
my gosh, I watch the Herd all the time, and
you helped me and my husband win a football gambling pool,
a season long win, and I'm dumbfounded, and I'm like, wow,
(02:29):
she's apparently from Houston. So then I say, brit get
over you. I gotta call my daughter over so she
at least hears it. And then the lady's like, oh,
sorry to interrupt your vacation, but I saw you posted
on Instagram you're in England, and I said to my friends,
we gotta find Jason. We got we gotta see him.
He's here. That's crazy. And now we run into you
and I'm like, oh my gosh, oh okay, and you
(02:51):
just you never know. So maybe I gotta start posting
less on social media. But the funniest part was then
she goes, can I get a picture, and then my
my daughter just starts backing up because again, this is
nerdy stuff. You guys, I'm sure you don't give a
rats ass. But it was fun to be in London.
Amsterdam is a vibe. We got fortunate England was playing
the Netherlands. Whatever. One day last week, the days all
(03:14):
run together, and I still have a little bit of
jet lag. But it just so happened that we were
in the Netherlands and folks, this is essentially their super Bowl,
the Netherlands and the euro Cup semifinals, and it was unbelievable.
Like you go to We're at a restaurant and I
see all bikes. By the way, if you've never been
to Netherlands, everybody's just riding bikes fast everywhere. It's a
(03:34):
total biking city, and everybody's riding in one direction. So
I say to the waiter, I'm like, so, how far
down do we have to go to see where all
these people are going. He's like, it's like one block.
I was like, all right, So after dinner we walk.
You turn a corner and it's like, I don't know,
a thousand people outside of like a bar, not a
huge bar either, and there's just a billion bikes. I'm like,
oh my god, just a sea of orange. I'm like,
(03:57):
we're not gonna mess he we can't even see the TV.
Blah blah blah. So we decide, okay, let's walk a
couple of blocks and I'm telling you folks. Every couple
blocks there was like throngs, two hundred people, five hundred
people at bars. We're like, we're not gonna be able
to see the game. So we called the hotel and
we were like, Hey, what's the deal. Can you guys
hook us up? So they gave us this little underground
(04:18):
pub and we had a decent viewing in Netherlands scored
early and I was like, oh my gosh, England ended
up winning great game. Euros were fantastic. I'm disappointed England
lost to Spain, but you know whatever, such as life. Anyways,
it was. It was a jolly good time. And I
don't know, Rob, did I miss a lot in the
sports world. I don't even really know where to start.
I did do a bunch of research right before this.
(04:41):
Obviously we got Team USA Versus Australia today and hoops.
I don't know, Rob, the Kawhi Leonard? Do we lead
with Kawhi Leonard leaving the tea? I just when I
heard that. And again I was not on Twitter at
all last week, so I missed a ton of stuff.
I did do Instagram because I like it, But I
don't know, Rob, was that the biggest story of the week,
(05:02):
Kawhi leaving Team USA. When I heard, I was stunned.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
It was certainly up there. And if you're a guy
like me who swims in the dark spaces of the
Twitter sphere, him leaving was secondary to the photos that
allegedly showed my guy, Kawhi Leonard frequenting the gentleman establishments. Oh,
I didn't know you allowed cameras in places like that.
But there's certainly a guy who looks like Kawhi Leonard
(05:28):
getting himself a you know, some VIP treatment.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
You know, I don't know if that's true or not. Again,
photoshops a beautiful thing. But that's what I thought was
the big story, because he's like, hey, I went to
the USA camp, did my three days. I'm out before
I leave. Let me make a quick pit stop and
stay in vas round a couple of days. Yeah, it
was a big sports week, and if we're talking Team USA,
I guess the biggest story, though, outside of Kawhi leaving,
(05:54):
is that once he left, he was replaced on the roster,
not by the reigning Finals MVP, but by what some
are calling the fifth best player on the Boston Celtic roster.
Oh what's up with Jalen Brown and Derek White? My guy, wow,
I did see that.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
It was when I heard it.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
I mean, you know, as soon as.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
You're Kauhi's out, You're like, oh, it'll be the finals MVP,
Jalen Brown, the guy who won the Eastern Conference Finals MVP,
because Tatum and Holiday or on the team already, right,
you're gonna add anybody's gonna add Jayleen Brown. And I
was a little surprised to see that they went with
Derek White. I mean, like, if you're just talking about
(06:33):
from a basketball fit, I don't hate the White move.
Although if you're talking about apples for apples, Jalen Brown
is much closer to Kawhi in terms of length than
what he can do and height than Derek White is.
But also, you know, like if Jalen Brown wins Finals
MVP and then comes to the team and Jason Tatum's
(06:56):
the sixth man and Jaylen Brown's the eleventh guy, what
does that say? Rob?
Speaker 1 (06:59):
You know?
Speaker 2 (07:00):
And also Brown hadn't been in camp, remember how Like
I guess Kitlyn Clark and we'll talk about her later.
The big issue that the USA women's basketball issue was
that Caitlyn Clark hadn't been at some of the camps.
Remember she was at like Final four or whatever, so
she like technically was ineligible. And I think they're saying
Derek White had been at the camps. He was going
(07:23):
to get the nod regardless, but it is kind of
a bad look for them to take White over Brown.
It's also not a great look for Brown to then
come out and kind of take a jab say the
reason I'm not on the team is because of Nike,
which is a bit of a shocker, but I don't know.
Brown is handsomely paid, he's the Finals MVP, He's on
top of the world. And it does I mean, there's
(07:44):
no way around it. This feels it's it's not a
good look for anyone. But it feels a little bit awkward,
doesn't it.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Oh, it's super awkward. And it wasn't more awkward than
when they caught up with Jason Tatum. I think the
day after, well contacts for our listeners who have not,
you know, seeing the story if they've been traveling themselves abroad.
So after he wasn't pick Jalen Brown threw up the
monocle emojis very you know, incognito and he knew he
was questioning something. They didn't know what it was. We
assumed it was Team USA. And then he made a
(08:13):
direct shot. He added Nike. He said, Yo, this is
what we're doing. Then the next day doubled down on
Twitter saying I'm not afraid of you or your resources.
And according to The Athletic, Jalen Brown has had a
complicated relationship with Nike going back for years. You know,
back in twenty twenty two, he put out something saying,
since when does Nike care about ethics? And response to
(08:34):
some criticism, they levy towards Kyrie Irving. You know, he
famously will wear Nike shoes during games, but he'll black
out the Nike sign. Yes, so you know he has
a he's very anti swoosh. But Jason Tatum was asked
about the whole thing like the day after, think he
was on Friday. So, hey, have you talked to Jalen
(08:55):
since all this went down? No, I mean there are
so many guys who could take that last spot or whatever.
So it is what it is, like Jason Tatum and
this is not his fault, but Jalen Brown put him
in a situation where if he capes for his guy
Jylen Brown, he's disrespecting his other guy, Derek White, who's
on the team. If he doesn't say and he says, hey,
(09:17):
you know, Derek White's a great fit. We like what
he brings. He the three point shooter, he plays good defense.
Then that's gonna be spun into Oh so now you're
saying he's a better player than Jaylen Brown. So all
of us Laker fans who are saying for years that
we're trying to drive a wedge in between Tatum and
Brown and eventually lead to Jason Tatum getting traded here
to LA. This might be the snowball that gets rolling
(09:38):
down the hill and hopefully things get real weird there
in Boston and we could see hashtag future Laker Jason
Tatum in the purple and gold.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Well, you're right, I didn't realize it was that bad,
but hearing you talk about it now, So let's just
add all this up. Tatum is the first team All
NBA guy. Tatum is perceived to be the best player
on the team. Tatum is the favorite to win Finals MVP.
Then Jalen Brown wins Eastern Conference MVP and Finals MVP
Tatum gets the richest contract in NBA history. Tatum is
(10:08):
the one on the Olympic team, and now Brown has
an opportunity to add get added to the team, and
they take another Celtics, So there's now three Celtics on
the team, but not the guy who is the Finals MVP,
and Brown sounds almost based on you. I don't know
the tone of what he's saying on Twitter. That can
get lost all the time, but it almost sounds like
(10:29):
he's a little upset that maybe he's not getting the
flowers he deserves. Is that safe to say?
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Sure?
Speaker 3 (10:35):
Well, you know what, even though I make the joke
about the future Laker thing, well, I'm only half kidding
on that one. It definitely feels like conspiracy theory. This
definitely feels like Nike really is keeping Jalen Brown down
because number one, first and foremost, he is not a
Nike guy. And according to quick math, every player on
(10:56):
the Team USA roster except for three is either an
exclusive Nike client like lebron kd A d guys like that,
or they wear Nikes during games. Drew Holliday, Derek White.
The only non Nike athletes Joel Embiid, who is the
best American big man available.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Well, they needed him badly, right.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Exactly, and and they had to keep him from France. Yes,
Steph Curry, who is the best shooter in the world,
and an Anthony.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
The most popular player on the team right.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Probably, I would say so, an Anthony Edwards who is
viewed by many as the next face of the NBA.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
And so the only wasn't Edwards the best guy on
the team last year at the World Cup of Basketball. Yes,
it was Austin Reeves and and and was good, but
Halle and Edwards.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
So so the so the only non Nike guys are
like the best of the best. Like, you're not getting
you know, all due respect to uh, you know my
guy Zactly. You're not getting zach Lavine out there. I
don't know Zactly he was.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
I think he was on the h Yeah, what I
was just saying.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
For this context for Jay, So I think that that's
I think he has a point about the whole Nike
doesn't want me to be there kind of a situation.
Speaker 1 (12:08):

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Jalen Brown some people like, some people don't, But he
is one of the most outspoken, most conscientious players in
all of sports. Really, He's one of those guys who
will use his platform when he feels is necessary to
voice his opinion about a social issue, about a political issue.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
You know.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
He's one of those guys. And that's part of the
reason why he's anti Nike. It's part of the reason
why he hasn't had a shoe deal in three years
is because, according to the Athletic again, he's one of
those anti conglomerate kind of dudes, Like he just doesn't
believe in that you know thing, but he doesn't believe
in that big business, you know, takeover kind of a situation.
So if your team USA and Nike, the last thing
(13:06):
that you want is a guy like Jalen Brown, right
or wrongly, to come out and do or say something
that could be viewed as controversial. That is going to
you know, raise some eyebrows.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yeah, I mean, I also think there is something to
the listen, we got enough stars, we need role players, sure,
because honestly, like I get it that Derek quite clearly
is the twelfth guy on this team, right, and maybe
there's certain situations you put him in, like as the
eventsive stopper, but he's probably gonna play the fewest minutes.
Halliburton's probably eleven. Is that safe to say?
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, I would say so.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
So, Like if you ad Jalen Brown, like where does
he do you instantly play him above Tatum? I don't know.
It's a tough situation. Like I'm surprised they really haven't
been forced to talk about it a lot, Like did
Kerr have anything to say?
Speaker 3 (13:58):
No, the only person really spoke publicly about it was
Grant Hill and shout out to Grant Hill. He's like, well,
you know I wore Felis back in the day, and
you know that wasn't much of a problem for me.
It's like, okay, well it's a little different time now
compared to the then.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Just six or whatever team he was on. Well, Michael Jordan, remember,
was a Nike guy through and through, mister Nike. Go
see the movie with Ben Affleck in there. What was
that called the Nike movie Air Air? Yeah, that was good.
I saw it and Michael Jordan went to the Olympics.
The team was sponsored by Reebok and he covered he
(14:33):
covered it up the Reebok logo. He just wouldn't you know,
wouldn't be seen with it. I guess part of his
deal or whatever with Nike. Speaking of sports movies minor
aside on the plane, I saw, you know, a bunch
of movies. I saw King Richard, The Richard Williams, Venus Williams,
Serena Williams. Have you seen that?
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Rob?
Speaker 2 (14:49):
I have yes, really good movie.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
The hell?
Speaker 2 (14:53):
How did you not tell me about this?
Speaker 3 (14:55):
I feel like we talked about it on the pod
when it came out, and you're like, yeah, I'll get
to it. But you know, you such a man about town.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
I'm not a man.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Slip your memory a little bit.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
But anyways, So USA plays Australia today. They should be fine.
I'm just gonna put this out there, Rob, did you
see Serbia with Jokic beat France and France had all
their dudes. Here's the worst part for France. Jokic fouled
out midway through the fourth. They won and the game
was close and they were able to hold on without him.
The USA plays Serbia in the in group play. I
(15:25):
have it put in my calendar just so I don't
get any Hey, can we do this. I'll tell you
the date right now, Sunday, July twenty eighth, so two
weeks less than two weeks now. I don't know the time,
because you know the time difference in France. But I'm
just telling you that will not be a walkover. I
(15:45):
don't I don't think embiid can handle Yokich. We know
Anthony Davis can't. I believe Jokic got the MVP in
the finals against bam Adebayo. I don't know what they're
gonna do, and if Serbia goes crazy from three, it's
gonna be a problem. A little nervous. I'm not gonna lie. Also, Rob,
since I did watch some highlights, did you see the
(16:06):
Cooper Flag performance against Team USA?
Speaker 3 (16:08):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Yeah, holy shit? Does he look good? Cooper Flag locket.
I know that people like Ace Bailey, big time player.
Cooper Flag looks like, Okay, we're going to be aggressively
bad and.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Try to get him.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
That guy looks special. I mean he's hitting side step threes.
I mean he nearly willed that select team to beat
the twenty twenty four team going to the Olympics for
the men. Now, I saw in the highlights a lot
of Lebron on the bench, Curry on the bench, but
it was like still Anthony Davis, Drew Holliday. Like Drew
Holliday was like harassing Cooper Flag. Who could bring the
(16:44):
ball up the court against him? This guy looks I
don't even have an NBA comp for him, because you know,
he's white and he's like six ' eleven inside outside.
I don't know what is he robbed? Do you have
an NBA comp for Cooper Flag?
Speaker 3 (16:56):
It's early, it's very early. I think he's one of
those three four types. He's a big wing because he's
gonna measure round. I believe it is like a power
forward time. He like Kevin Durant, but a little thicker
than Kevin Durant. He might be he might be a
meteor version of Paul George.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Ooh, that's not bad now, I'll just say I'll just
toss this out there. Why didn't the US say, you
know what, we're gonna take Cooper Flag instead of Derek White.
Why didn't they do that?
Speaker 3 (17:20):
That could have been the move they do that with
Anthony Davis with.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Team and beads always hurt. So let's say embiid goes down.
We already saw Kawhi, who everybody knows is always hurt.
He's out. I mean, Kevin Durant is hurt. That's a
six to eleven guy who can play the four or
the five, maybe the five in small ball and beads
always hurt. Like, I don't I don't see why you
know a d I don't even want to talk about it.
But I don't see why you didn't roll the dice
(17:45):
with Cooper Fly. I don't know. We'll see they had options.
But that's good. So anyways, USA Australia. I don't know.
Rob you see a spread on that game. It's being
played in like Dubai or the somewhere over where, there's
bathtubs full of money that will just get handed to
Team USA for going there. Did you see the video
of them arriving.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
No, I did not see the name Abu Dhabi.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Or wherever it is. I don't even know. And you
know it's like the Kingdom. So it's a big scene
and they have this like huge falcon on one of
those sleeves, and like Steph Curry puts on the sleeve
and there's this gigantic falcon next to his head. I'm like,
you got to pay me to do that kind of stuff.
You know, there's no way I'm putting a massive bird
(18:28):
right next to my head, unpredictable bird. What if something
happened to Steph Curry.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Well, I'm sure they probably did pay him to do it.
If we're being honest, I'm almost positive. You know, when
Team USA is getting ready for the Olympics in Paris,
it totally makes sense that they would have their tune
up friendly games. And let me check this here, Abu Dhabi. Yeah,
totally totally makes sense right on the way, like.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Please come, we will just give you a ton of money.
Just come and play the games over here. You know,
it's it's the oil money. It's that live tour stuff.
You know, didn't Christiano Ronaldo went over there and it
was playing soccer. It's getting a little crazy now, it's
getting spicy, all right. Let me just let me quickly
pivot to the Caitlin Clark saga. Just no, no, no.
(19:12):
Before we get to Kaitlin Clark, let's stick with men's basketball.
So Jalen Brunson signed a deal on I guess Friday.
That freaked everybody out. These are some of the words
that were described in the deal. The greatest financial favor
in NBA history and left one hundred and thirteen million
(19:33):
dollars on the table. And I need to just take
a quick twenty second time out to talk about my
knicks in Jalen Brunson, you guys do. I'm a huge
Brunson guy, a big fan of his work. He's done
great things for the Knicks that I do believe the
Knicks are the second best team in the East. I
think we're talking about Jalen Brunson as being one of
the best players in the league. He was all NBA
great story. Let me just quickly attempt to defend Jalen
(19:57):
Brunson and this huge contract. So number one, the Knicks
as currently constituted, have nine players chewing up about one
hundred fifty three million dollars. Okay, the second apron is
more than that, way more than that, like fifty million.
More than that nine guys at one hundred fifty three million.
If you look around the league at the other contenders
(20:19):
or pretenders Lakers, you'll see two, three, maybe four guys
approaching that one hundred fifty three million dollar number. Jalen Brunson. Yes,
did the Knicks a big favor. Okay, Now, from his perspective,
he still can opt out of his player option at
the age of thirty two, the final year he can
(20:42):
opt out and get a new deal. At that point
he's eligible for like five years, four hundred million dollars,
some ridiculous number. That's real and amazing, but that's in
four years. Let's remember, small point guard, not often injured,
maybe not injury prone, but he did break take his
hand there in the playoffs. HI used to drape. I
(21:03):
looked at the numbers, folks. Jalen Brunson in his career
went from back up to starter, and this past season
under Tom Thibodeau, who drives his players into the ground,
Brunston played the most minutes per game he ever had played,
the most games he ever had played, the most playoff
games he ever had, attempted the most threes, the most shots.
He was everything. He's probably exhausted, and it's you know,
(21:27):
somebody could argue, why didn't Jalen Brunson get the nod
for Team USA. Maybe, but I'm sure Brunson needs the break.
Plus he's coming off the major injury. He probably probably
wouldn't've be ready for the Olympics. But I got no
problem with Brunson saying, yeah, give me the money now.
I don't want to wait a year. Hey, folks, a
lot can happen in a year. And I know you're
gonna say, well, he's stole in his prime. Yeah, but
(21:48):
he's a small point guard coming off of massive major
wear and tear doing everything for the Knicks. And oh,
by the way, how do we know the Knicks didn't
go Hey, Jalen, we uh we can. We can make
a play for Paul George. He's in play. And how
do we know Jyleen Brunson didn't say, similar to Lebron,
(22:09):
I'll take less money, go get me my guy. Lebron said,
give me Reddick. Lebron said, draft my son. Okay, I'll
take less now. The Lakers couldn't end up getting anyone
to sign, but Lebron did take slightly less than max
other under the second apron, which Genie Buss I'm sure
is thrilled about. How do we know Jyleen Brunson didn't say, guys,
guys can't be mckail bridges. Just do it. I'll take less,
(22:32):
just get me Bridges, that's who I want on this deal.
We don't know if that's what we've said. I think
this is not the worst thing in the world, not
the dumbest thing in the world. Jayleen Brunson obviously again
one hundred and thirteen million.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
On the table.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
Air quotes.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Yes, that's more than ninety nine point nine percent of
people will make in their entire life. I mean, you
could probably say a handful of people and he's leaving
that on the table. But Brunson's dad was a pro,
similar to Steph Curi's dad was a pro. I'm gonna
go ahead and guess Jalen Bruns's is I don't know
(23:09):
frugal's the right word. But he's not out there like
LaMelo Ball buying a different Lamborghini for every day of
the week or whatever LaMelo Ball does. You know, like
I have a feeling, Jyleb Bruns is probably pretty prudent
and he's saying, listen, man, I'm good taking a little
bit less than I need to so we can build
up our team and let's bring New York City a championship.
(23:30):
You know why, you're a star in New York. They
love you. You're gonna make a lot of money advertising marketing,
like he's gonna clean up off the court. Rob Maybe
I'm in the minority because the Nicks are my squad
with the Lakers, But I'm not gonna like say he's
an idiot or blame him. Oh, by the way, the dude.
You know, we've seen guys get suffer major injuries, whether
(23:51):
it's acl achilles whatever, and it's like, wow, I don't
know if you can pay you. I mean, hell, Kawhi Leonard.
Look what he just had to take less? He took
it in a heartbeat. Clippers tried to get Paul George
to take less. He even't want it. I don't know.
I don't have a major issue with this.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
To you, absolutely, I'm gonna be one of people who
is going to call himn idiot. And part of it
is not his fault. Part of it is CJ. McCollum
and the Players Union negotiating what may have been one
of the worst deals that I've seen for a players
association in my lifetime. Allowing them to insert the first
and second aprin, which basically acts as a hardcap, was
(24:28):
unbelievably shortsighted, I believe by the players because they were
so worried about, you know, the ninth man on the
bench making sure he gets his eight or nine million,
that you're now causing. You're making a situation where the
best players, who if anyone's worth MAXI money as Jalen
bruns if anyone's worth MAXI money as Lebron James, that
they then have to take less money to help the team.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
I don't like that.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
And that's number one. Number two, and this is kind
of go off in a little bit of.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
A tangent here.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Number two is that in the article that Wojch put out,
because I believe he was the guy that gave the
information to first. I think he's the CAAA connection I
believe could be part of it is they said that
Jalen Brunson had guys like Patrick Mahomes, Derek Jeter, and
Tom Brady in mind when he decided to take less money,
because those guys famously took less money. Now, I don't
(25:16):
know enough about Derek Jeter's salary situation so salary cap yet,
so I don't know about that one. But as far
as Tom Brady goes, and we've I've talked about some
on this pod for years now, anyone's been listening your
P one listener to the pod, you know how I
feel about this one. Tom Brady famously took less money
all the time to help the Patriots build out a roster,
(25:38):
and they won a lot of Super bowl So like, see,
that's the way you gotta do. You gotta take less
money so you can win well. According to the Boston Globe,
the Patriots spent below league average in seven of Brady's
last ten years, including the years they won the Super
Bowl in twenty fourteen, sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen. So the
quote unquote savings that he gave them was never actually
(25:59):
shared with other players. Robert Kraft just kept the money.
He's like, hey, we're just gonna, you know, have the
flexibility to do something, but never actually do anything. And
then the second one, Patrick Mahomes, I know, Patrick Mahomes
just went back to back Super Bowls. So people again
are gonna say, well, see what happens you take less money,
Patrick Mahomes, hes got a team around Him's where gon
win a Super Bowl? You know that when he first took
(26:21):
less money, some of the key roster guys that got
let go almost a media in the first couple of years.
They lost Tyreek Hill, which led to them last year
having one of the worst wide receiving corps in the NFL.
They lost their offensive tackle which led to them over
paying for Jawan Taylor, which they're regrading every day. They
this last offseason lost Lagerius Snead, So again, Payton, excuse me.
(26:43):
Patrick Mahomes is taking less money so that he can
have a great roster around him. So if that's the case,
then why is it that they're losing Pro Bowl and
all Pro caliber players every single year? It doesn't make sense.
The chick in the egg thing does not line up here. Yeah,
you can say that you're taking less money because you
(27:04):
want to help the team, and I understand that I
personally would never do it. But if that's your prerogative,
that's cool. But don't try to convince me that you
taking less money is going to lead to you than
getting better players around you and having a better chance
at the championship when history says that is not the
case at all.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Well, the theoretical, Hey, man, if I take less money,
we'll get better players. That can be difficult, as we
saw with the Lakers like Lebron, I'll take less money.
Can you go get the better players? Oh you can't. Okay,
well I'm not taking less. I think that's the smart
way to do it. But again, we don't know that.
Brunson said, how's this. We don't know the back room
shinan against They would never let that out. That's probably
(27:42):
against the CBA, right, Hey, go get me Bridges. I'll
take less. I mean, I gotta say I don't hate it,
and rop if the day ever comes that, I I'm
one hundred million dollar man and I could take a
little bit less. Again, I don't think it's the craziest
thing in the world. Again, that's a sports parallel, you know,
it's different from like a radio, TV, podcast network or whatever.
(28:05):
But I just I think it's a good joint and
I'm not expecting other guys to do that. I'm not
expecting Jason Tatum to do that, you know, I'm not
expecting Anthony Edwards to do that. Go get your money.
And if you really believe in the organization and you
have a say behind the scenes that maybe everyone else
doesn't know about, I'm perfectly fine with that.

Speaker 2 (28:37):
Let's quickly go to Caitlin Clark. So the Indian and
Fever are kind of kind of streaking here, and I know,
I saw Diana Trossi suffered an injury and she very
famously is going to the Olympics for the sixth time,
getting the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is I think a
crock of shit. But the team that Caitlin Clark's fever
(28:59):
faced on some Minnesota links, their head coach is also
the US Olympic coach, and she's been taking slight jabs
at Caitlin Clark and why are we promoting the rest
of the league and all this nonsense. And so obviously
the game was a sellout Sunday in Minnesota. But when
reporters noticed that Fever fans were making I guess the
(29:22):
trip to Minnesota in large numbers, they asked the Minnesota
Lynks coach at what do you think, And she's like,
I don't give two shits. No, I don't give one
shit about Indiana fans taking over a game from Minnesota
which is at home and has like no, they got
a good record, they're one of the top four or
five teams in the league. So what do you think
happens in the game. Caitlin Clark has another great performance,
(29:45):
makes four free throws, Late has a good assist. Late
Indiana steals a game. I'll be honest with you. I'm
sitting on the couch with my daughter Sunday and I'm like,
I had just watched England lose. I was kind of bummed.
I was like, guy, is there any other stuff on you?
We watch a movie grocery shopping? And I'm like, oh wait,
Kaitlyn Clark's playing. So I look it up on my phone.
I see it's like a tie game with like three
(30:06):
minutes left. I fire it up and of course Fever
going to win. And there's a great moment that Minnesota misses.
Caitlin Clark gets the rebound and starts to dribble it
out and they foul her. Caitlin Clark starts clapping, staring
at the Minnesota coach, not for too long to make
it obvious, and then making the motion give me more noise,
you know, like with the arms up, and of course
(30:28):
the crowd kind of erupts Remember this is in Minnesota, folks.
I'm just telling you, these dopey coaches in the WNBA
need to stop taking unnecessary shots at Caitlin Clark. She's
gonna get the last laugh every time because she is.
I was gonna say, she's the man. She's an incredible
basketball player. She's just scratching the surface. And no, I'm
(30:50):
not gonna get involved in this dumb Who's the rookie
of the year the WNBA with like twenty games left.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Who cares?
Speaker 2 (30:58):
By the way, it's Kitlin Clark. Automatically a yes, I
saw she had like fifteen double doubles in a row. Awesome. Ultimately,
it's gonna be Caitlin Clark. Okay, she's the point guard
of the fever as a rookie, she has the ball
in her hands all the time. She's one of the
best shooters in the league. And let's be frank, let's
just be completely honest. She is a game changing athlete.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
I'm just.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
The idea of her in a Steph Curry role is
just totally not off the table. It seriously makes all
the sense in the world. The fans loved Curry. I
will never forget. Remember I was in Pennsylvania before we
moved out here to LA and I might have gone
to one sixers game and then I saw, let me
(31:44):
see when Steph Curry's in town. We circled the date
we got tickets. My son showed up with a Curry jersey.
Obviously that I got him, and I'll never forget. The
Lower Bowl was almost sixty percent Steph Curry fans with
Steph Curry jerseys and T shirts in Philly. This is
like twenty fifteen, and Curry was ascending and people gravitate
(32:09):
toward Curry because of the three point shooting, the ball handling,
and you know, we're all not going to be six five,
six eight. We're gonna be the next Lebron James, We're
gonna be the next Kobe. But Curry's six three, six four.
We've seen smaller players do major damage. And then we've
never seen anyone shoot from you know, half court all
(32:30):
the time like Curry. Kaitlyn Clark looks like the average kid.
She's I mean, what's your hype? Five ten, five eleven's
maybe six feet and just dropping bombs from everywhere the court,
vision in the handle. People see that and think I
can be Caitlin Clark. She's not wildly guy like, she's
not dunky like. I think people see her and they
just think I can kind of be like that and
(32:52):
I can relate to them, and that's not that's not
a knock on. Oh we kid. People can't relate to Shack.
Shack was super popular. Yeah, Shack was pop because he
was a rapper, he was a movie star, he had
the outsized personality. Everybody fits in to their different spots.
I think Clark and I know she's been compared to
Magic and Bird and because of what she's doing for
the league, Yeah, that's a fall applies too. I'm just
(33:13):
telling you I see a lot of Steph Curry with
her game that every time she goes behind the back
around the screen, you're just waiting three. Oh you know
she didn't shoot a grape from three. Doesn't matter. They won.
She got the last laugh. And this Tarassi injury is interesting,
rob because that coach does not like Clark. I don't
care what anybody says. She just doesn't like her. She
(33:34):
doesn't like the clerk's getting all the attention. And I
will be willing to guarantee you if Tarasi is a
no go for the Olympics. They still do not take
Caitlin Clark. They just won't do it.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
Yeah, I don't think they will either. And to piggyback
off your larger point, I'd hate to beat a dead horse,
but I'm gonna punch it in the ribs a few
times here. What the WNBA and their league as a whole,
maybe not the league front office put the players and
the coaches and whatnot. Their rejection of Kaitlyn Clark and
what she brings to their sport is dumbfounding to me. Okay,
(34:10):
there was an article that came out last week in
Sports Media Watch that said, each one of the top
five highest rated games this season have involved Kaitlyn Clark. Okay,
the WNBA entered the twenty twenty four season having gone
sixteen years without ever cracking a million six team. Okay,
Caitlyn Clark and the fever this season, and I'm sure
(34:32):
it's gonna go more based on Sunday's game because those
numbers aren't in yet. They've already played an eleven million
plus viewers. Now, all right, Kaitlyn Clark, and I know
they want to say, oh, Angel Reese and all these
other players and then you, no, that's not the case.
Kaitlyn Clark. Since she's gotten to the league, ad revenue
for television WNBA games is up thirty six percent year
(34:53):
to year and double what it was over the last
two years. She is box office. He is a lightning rod.
Everybody has an opinion about her, Everybody wants to watch
her play, and for whatever reason, you have people like
the coach in Minnesota, Like we had a guest on
The Odd Couple a couple of months ago, we got
(35:14):
on to talk about women's basketball, and we Pepper reprefaced
the interview by saying, Hey, we want to talk about
Kaylyn Clark. We want to talk about the tournament, talk
about this this moment that women's sports is having, and
Christ We're sorry, Rob Parker, both friends of the show,
spent ninety percent of the interview talking about Kaylyn Clark
because she is still even at that time, was the
most interesting person in the tournament. The all due respect
(35:36):
to Don Staley and the game Cocks, it was Kaitlyn Clark.
And after the interview we had people a representative from
the guest texting me blowing me up how upset they
were that the interview was focused on Kaitlyn Clark. So
as a result, I chose not to you know, pump
out the interview later from our social media handles because
(35:58):
they were so upset that, you know, this guest had
to talk so much about Caitlin Clark, who she swore
she had no issue with, but obviously if you read
the XT messages, it seemed to think that she did
have an issue with her, And like, that's that's kind
of what's going on right now. You know, even I'm
glad her teammates have kind of come around today, her
and Aliah Boston team and have some good chemistry going now,
(36:19):
and they seem to like each other, and she's not
getting these cheap shot fouls and her teammates kind of
standing around watching it anymore. But for whatever reason, the
league as a whole still is not supporting this young lady.
And I don't understand why, because she is going to
be the reason why they're all getting paid more money,
why they're all getting more endorsement deals, why they're all
getting the charter flights. And you don't have to bow
(36:42):
down to her, but you shouldn't try to tear her
down either.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Yeah, very odd. I don't know, you just don't see
this a lot. I don't know, Rob, I was going
to go into the Jets and Aaron Rodgers and DeVante Adams.
I don't know that I have the energy for it
here and on a Monday, you know, it's just like
I can't really do it. By the way, here, how's
this for randomness. So we're at the airport leaving Amsterdam
(37:08):
coming back to the US and I see a woman
wearing a Mark Sanchez Jets jersey at the airport Amsterdam.
A Mark Sanchez Jets jersey. I was stunned, so I
take a picture of the back. I didn't I didn't
get the woman's face in the picture, but took a
picture of the jersey. And I texted to Mark Sanchez,
you know, and I'm like, oh damn, it's like two
(37:29):
am in La. I should not have sent that. He
responds instantly, He's.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
Like, small world.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
I'm right around the corner. Mark Sanchez was like Switzerland
with his kid. He's like, oh man, I got Jets fans.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
They love me.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
They loved me everywhere. I was just like, dude, that
is that is very riddom. Not that I text Sanchez
a lot, but he is a super nice guy. It's
good to be back, Rob. This is this is fue.
I don't even know what we're gonna do guest wise,
but we're gonna have some good content this week. USA basketball.
I think the Olympics are gonna be good, especially with
the basketball, and I don't know what the women's basketball.
(38:04):
The men's is gonna be spicy. I'm just a little
nervous for that Serbia game. It's early, but I'm nervous,
and I know the summer of soccer is trudging on.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
But.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
Can I got to wrap up with a quick shout
out to Nakasa. So open the season with a tough
one nothing loss to one of the best teams on
the road, you know, a tough spot. Bounce back in
Game two, four to one victory. They scored two in
the first like twelve minutes. I was like, Wow, we
got we got a squad in Nakasa. I will be
seeing them this summer. I won't say where, but I
(38:35):
will be seeing them. Very excited for that soccer obviously
exciting and uh basketball fun. NFL's like literally right around
the corner. I'll be going to Vegas soon to sign
up for the game. The year long contest at CIRCA. Obviously,
college football is gonna be good. It's I think it's
(38:56):
gonna be a great year. Politics might try to get
in the way, but we won't let it. Here on
straight fire.
Speaker 1 (39:02):
We'll talk to you tomorrow
