an unfortunate NFL story. We'll get to in like ten minutes.

I don't want to talk about it, but that's you know,
that's what we do here. You know, we tackle tough subjects.
I'm gonna actually start with huge news, seismic news for
the Lakers.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
No, just kidding. Marcus Smart to the.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Lakers on a two year, eleven million dollar deal. Basically,
the Lakers I had been begging them to get Bradley
Beal and instead of going offense, Luca put in a call,
put the full court press on Marcus Smart, and the
Lakers land him after.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
He was dumped by the Wizards. It's funny.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Marcus Smart has obviously a rich history of being an
elite defender. Lebron knows him well from those battles in
the Eastern Conference. Marcus Smart Defensive Player of the Year
in twenty twenty two, and he finished he was First
Team All Defense three times.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
In four years. He has had some injury history.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
The most games he's ever played was seventy one, and
that was the year he was the Defensive Player of
the Year. So, you know, the last two seasons, as
Rob g pointed out to me earlier, Marcus Smart played
twenty games, followed by oh, my gosh, thirty four games.

So yeah, he's played fifty four games total in the
last two seasons.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Now one could say, oh, he's getting long in the tooth.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
I mean, Marcus Smart's thirty one years old. Doesn't turn
thirty two till next mart so he's not old. Is
the body breaking down? That's entirely possible, But it's also possible.
He was on losing teams the last two years. Memphis
they stunk. I mean, they were passable, but they weren't good.
I mean, imagine going from Boston where you're contending for
like six or six or seven years straight, okay, and

then all of a sudden you're on Memphis and then
you're on Washington.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Washington one of the worst teams in the league last year.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
So they had no incentive to play a lot of
Marcus Smart. Let's shut him down, Let's let the young
guys play, let's lose games, let's try to get a
higher draft pick. So let's not judge Smart on the
last two years. If you want to say, hey, he's
had an injury history, I can rock with that.

What does he bring to the Lakers?
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Well, I thought Beal would have brought offense and made
their offense unstoppable down the strikes with Luca spreading the
floor with Lebron and Reeves and Beale and Marcus Smart
is essentially not the polar opposite. But instead of getting
another offensive player, you get a lockdown defender. Now, again,
he's not the defender he was three years ago when
he was DPOY. But you're telling me late in games,

he's not gonna be guarding the best opposing offensive player, SGA,
Anthony Edwards, whoever you want. I'm not gonna say he's
gonna shut him down, but for sure that's his assignment.
Whereas instead of Anthony Edwards going at Austin Reeves every
second and then Austin Reeves magically losing his offensive touch.
Funny how that happens, they'll have Marcus Smart in that rule.

So my guess is starters whatever, I don't care, but
the closing lineup makes sense. Luca, Lebron, Reeves, Smart, Aiden,
Maybe you get Ruby in there right if somebody's having
an off game, or you go a small ball, no
need for Ayton. Ultimately, I think there's a good move.
And interestingly, these are the three moves the Lakers have made.

Jake Laavia was added. Now again Jovan Buja, who covers
the Lakers as close as anybody. He swears La Ravia
was a bit of us and there's major upside. Interestingly,
La Ravia and Austin Reeves are friends. They share an agent,
so Reeves is the one who put the full court
press on la Ravia. Then you had DeAndre Ayton, Luca

an eight and share an agent. Luca going to multiple reports,
called or texted eight and saying, hey, bro, yeah, excited,
let's make it happen. And then it came out that
Luca is making moves to ad Marcus Smart. Folks, I
don't want to say I'm disappointed in Lebron because you
guys don't have a Lebron guy.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
I'm a little disappointed in Lebron.

Why is he I don't want to say he's throwing
in the towel, and I get that he's upset with
the Lakers.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
He doesn't really want to help them in a way. Rob.

The analogy is, Hey, you are in charge of this,
that and the other. Ritch your job, and then the
company hires another young guy who basically does the same
thing as you, and they tell you, Rob, hey, can
you show this young guy the ropes. We want to
teach him everything you do. And you can instantly see
the writing on the wall. Oh shit, they hired my replacement.

Now Lebron is built different. Not to knock Rob g
I don't know how he's built.

Lebron was second ball NBA. So it's not one of
these Hey man, there, Luca is my replacement.

But you can still win together, right, And so that's
why a little disappointed. Lebron is kind of not thrown
in the towel, but he's kind of pouting and not apparently,
according to multiple warts here, he's not being involved in
the recruitment process.

I don't love that.

Obviously, when the bullets start flying, come October November. I'm
certain Lebron is going to be locked in. I don't
see a scenario where he's forcing his way out of
the Lakers by the All Star I just I don't
see that happening.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Assuming everybody's healthy and the Lakers are doing good.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
If they're thirteenth of sixty sorry fifteen in the West,
and guys are hurt left and right, then yeah, I
can see on saying, hey, get me the hell out
of here, let me go to a contender to try
to winner a ring. That being said, Rob, I like
the Marcus Smart pickup. I still don't think they're in
the Clippers, Nuggets, Rockets category. I think they're in that
next batch of contenders. Obviously the Thunder in that top four.

They're in that next group. I don't Are they that
much better than the Spurs.

I don't know. Are they that much better than the
timber Wolves. Well, the Wolves just smoked them.

I don't know, So I would say the Lakers are
in like that second tier of contenders in the West.

You know what's crazy about this whole thing is that
I believe the Lakers are actually better today than they
were when the season ended, Like you essentially replaced DFS
with the Ravia Smart and Aiden and you don't lose
any draft picking, Like it's just basically a straight trade.
So you add the depth you didn't have before. La
Ravia is a better shooter than the DFS. DFS is
a better defender, but now you have Marcus smartin place

who can be your point of attack defender. And Aiden
is just a massive upgrade even his worst attractable say
he's a massive book grad from Jackson Hayes. So it's
funny that the Lakers that were the third seed last year,
I believe have gotten better. And yet to your point,
I don't know if they're a top four team in
the West, because I believe that the Clippers got vastly improved.

I believe that Denver on paper the best team in
the league because now they have the depth they didn't
have before. And I expect Oklahoma City, even though the
young legs would give the regular season, I don't know
if they're we saw in the playoffs, like Yokis is
just a different animal for them, Like no matter how
good okayc is, Yokis is a problem. And then of
course the Kevin Durant thing in Houston, So we'll see

if they can crack that home court advantage. Top four
in the Western Conference, Marcus Smart. To your point, if
he's healthy, it's a home run, right because he gives
them something that they have dreadfully needed, you know, basically
for the last two seasons. And that is a guy
that you can say, hey, whoever we're playing tonight, you're

guarding him, whether it's SGA Anthony Edwards, whether it's uh
Jaylen BROWNSEAI Jalen Brown. You know, you might even put
him on Trey Young and certainty like, whoever the guy
is on the other team, you're our primary person. And
it's a guy who you know is going to accept
the role and not really complain about it because he

is a defensive player first and even to your point
that he's you know, people say he's long in the tooth.
He's kind of mis slipping a little bit if you
look at his defensive box plus minds. I know is
an unperfect stat but he has been a positive defender
his entire career, save for the whatever eighteen games he
played in Washington when they were trying to lose on

purpose and even Dabitsch if you'd ask him what you'
seer and he would say he wasn't really given his
best effort. So like that, that's a huge upgrade for
them to your Lebron James point. It's what makes this
so frustrating as a Laker fan, is the only thing
that we have heard come from Lebron or from Lebron's

campians because it goes Ridge Paul was that super vague,
passive aggressive. Hey, you know, we respect the relationship with Lakers,
but we're also worried about our own career and blah
blah blah blah. So we'll monitor the situation you move forward.
And it's since then we've had, depending on who you follow,
conflicting reports basically every two or three days. Most recently

we've had within the last week, one reporter saying it's
looking like Lebron wants to play two or three more years.
He wants to get to twenty five seasons. Another one
saying this all points to this being Lebron's retirement tour
in LA and he wants to stay in La to
do it because you know, the All Star Games in
La YadA, yah YadA, and because he's not saying anything,

or having Rich Paul say anything. It's allowing all of
this stuff to float under the ether.

So then when David.

Manham asked him on the record you want to comment
on he says, I have nothing to talk about, and
he says, lets it fester. And that's one of the
reasons why, even as a Laker fan, going back to Cleveland,
going back to Miami and into Cleveland again, I've always
kind of pushed back a little bit on this idea
that Lebron's is a great leader because he does this everywhere.

You know, how can I feel confident in you as
the leader of the team when you are openly dangling
the rest of us in trade rumors throughout the season?
How can I feel confident confident you and leader of
the team when we don't even know if you're committed
to being here because you're taking one plus one deals.

Year after year after year after year. How can I
feel confident in you and the leader of.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
The team if when the team sucks like the Lakers
did during the Westbrook era. There's low light videos on
you can look it up where Lebron throws the ball
off the back of the backboard, trying to inbound it
because he doesn't care. Lebron is watching the ball roll
in front of him past half court and it rolls
out of bounds because it doesn't care. It's like, that's
not what a great leader does. Now, when things are

going great and you need a galvanizing presence and you
want to get then he's phenomenal because he has that
kind of personality and people gravitate towards him. But there's
a lot more that goes into being a good leader
than just being there when things are good.

Interest that's a little hot take for my liking. I
will say they had to not only move off Shake Milton,
but also Jordan Goodwin. And it's interesting because if you
don't follow the Lakers or go to their games or
watch them regularly, you don't even know who Jordan Goodwin is.
But Laker fans rob correct me if I'm wrong. They have
this affinity like he was the missing piece. Oh my gosh,
so pivotal guys. The Lakers must have seen enough from

Brownie and they like what we've got, Gabe Vincent, what
do we need Goodwin for? Marcus Smart can actually be
a top seven guy for us? I have no issue
with this, but Laker fans are freaking crazy people.

Goodwing's fine, but I'm not like, hey, we got to
keep him because we can't afford Marcus Smart like that,

the Lakers.

the Lakers I had been begging them to get Bradley
Beal and instead of going offense, Luca put in a call,
put the full court press on Marcus Smart, and the
Lakers land him after.

He was dumped by the Wizards. It's funny.

Marcus Smart has obviously a rich history of being an
elite defender. Lebron knows him well from those battles in
the Eastern Conference. Marcus Smart Defensive Player of the Year
in twenty twenty two, and he finished he was First
Team All Defense three times.

In four years. He has had some injury history.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
The most games he's ever played was seventy one, and
that was the year he was the Defensive Player of
the Year. So, you know, the last two seasons, as

last two seasons.

they stunk. I mean, they were passable, but they weren't good.
I mean, imagine going from Boston where you're contending for
like six or six or seven years straight, okay, and

then all of a sudden you're on Memphis and then
you're on Washington.

Washington one of the worst teams in the league last year.

So they had no incentive to play a lot of
Marcus Smart. Let's shut him down, Let's let the young
guys play, let's lose games, let's try to get a
higher draft pick. So let's not judge Smart on the
last two years. If you want to say, hey, he's
had an injury history, I can rock with that.

What does he bring to the Lakers?

Well, I thought Beal would have brought offense and made
their offense unstoppable down the strikes with Luca spreading the
floor with Lebron and Reeves and Beale and Marcus Smart
is essentially not the polar opposite. But instead of getting
another offensive player, you get a lockdown defender. Now, again,
he's not the defender he was three years ago when
he was DPOY. But you're telling me late in games,

he's not gonna be guarding the best opposing offensive player, SGA,
Anthony Edwards, whoever you want. I'm not gonna say he's
gonna shut him down, but for sure that's his assignment.
Whereas instead of Anthony Edwards going at Austin Reeves every
second and then Austin Reeves magically losing his offensive touch.
Funny how that happens, they'll have Marcus Smart in that rule.

So my guess is starters whatever, I don't care, but
the closing lineup makes sense. Luca, Lebron, Reeves, Smart, Aiden,
Maybe you get Ruby in there right if somebody's having
an off game, or you go a small ball, no
need for Ayton. Ultimately, I think there's a good move.
And interestingly, these are the three moves the Lakers have made.

Jake Laavia was added. Now again Jovan Buja, who covers
the Lakers as close as anybody. He swears La Ravia
was a bit of us and there's major upside. Interestingly,
La Ravia and Austin Reeves are friends. They share an agent,
so Reeves is the one who put the full court
press on la Ravia. Then you had DeAndre Ayton, Luca

an eight and share an agent. Luca going to multiple reports,
called or texted eight and saying, hey, bro, yeah, excited,
let's make it happen. And then it came out that
Luca is making moves to ad Marcus Smart. Folks, I
don't want to say I'm disappointed in Lebron because you
guys don't have a Lebron guy.

and guys are hurt left and right, then yeah, I

to winner a ring. That being said, Rob, I like
the Marcus Smart pickup. I still don't think they're in
the Clippers, Nuggets, Rockets category. I think they're in that
next batch of contenders. Obviously the Thunder in that top four.

Ravia is a better shooter than the DFS. DFS is
a better defender, but now you have Marcus smartin place

who can be your point of attack defender. And Aiden
is just a massive upgrade even his worst attractable say
he's a massive book grad from Jackson Hayes. So it's
funny that the Lakers that were the third seed last year,
I believe have gotten better. And yet to your point,
I don't know if they're a top four team in
the West, because I believe that the Clippers got vastly improved.

I believe that Denver on paper the best team in
the league because now they have the depth they didn't
have before. And I expect Oklahoma City, even though the
young legs would give the regular season, I don't know
if they're we saw in the playoffs, like Yokis is
just a different animal for them, Like no matter how
good okayc is, Yokis is a problem. And then of
course the Kevin Durant thing in Houston, So we'll see

if they can crack that home court advantage. Top four
in the Western Conference, Marcus Smart. To your point, if
he's healthy, it's a home run, right because he gives
them something that they have dreadfully needed, you know, basically
for the last two seasons. And that is a guy
that you can say, hey, whoever we're playing tonight, you're

guarding him, whether it's SGA Anthony Edwards, whether it's uh
Jaylen BROWNSEAI Jalen Brown. You know, you might even put
him on Trey Young and certainty like, whoever the guy
is on the other team, you're our primary person. And
it's a guy who you know is going to accept
the role and not really complain about it because he

is a defensive player first and even to your point
that he's you know, people say he's long in the tooth.
He's kind of mis slipping a little bit if you
look at his defensive box plus minds. I know is
an unperfect stat but he has been a positive defender
his entire career, save for the whatever eighteen games he
played in Washington when they were trying to lose on

purpose and even Dabitsch if you'd ask him what you'
seer and he would say he wasn't really given his
best effort. So like that, that's a huge upgrade for
them to your Lebron James point. It's what makes this
so frustrating as a Laker fan, is the only thing
that we have heard come from Lebron or from Lebron's

campians because it goes Ridge Paul was that super vague,
passive aggressive. Hey, you know, we respect the relationship with Lakers,
but we're also worried about our own career and blah
blah blah blah. So we'll monitor the situation you move forward.

we've had within the last week, one reporter saying it's
looking like Lebron wants to play two or three more years.
He wants to get to twenty five seasons. Another one
saying this all points to this being Lebron's retirement tour
in LA and he wants to stay in La to

or having Rich Paul say anything. It's allowing all of
this stuff to float under the ether.

not what a great leader does. Now, when things are

than just being there when things are good.
