Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up straight Fire, fam, It's me Jason McIntyre.
Straight Fire. For Monday, January twentieth, we had ourselves a
football weekend and it was pretty good on Sunday Saturday.
Not spectacular football, exciting in Detroit, boring in Kansas City,
and oh, I can't wait to talk about the Chiefs
(00:33):
and these new NFL rules that seem to favor Kansas City.
I cannot wait to get to that. We're probably gonna
hammer it all week Chiefs fans ear Muffett, You're not
gonna like it. I know y'all hate me online. Anyway,
I see the venom. We'll get to that my weekend. Listen, man,
Once you guys get to my advanced age and you
got your kids playing sports, you know, if you get
(00:55):
into coaching and they start playing club sports and travel,
it's busy. I was, you know, during the NFL season,
I tell the wife and the fall, Hey, Sundays, I'm
on the couch. There's fifteen games happening, and they kind of,
you know, they get it. I don't do much on
Sundays during the season, but during the playoffs in January now,
we got basketball season. The volleyball ramps up. If your
kids play volleyball. So I am at a volleyball tournament
(01:17):
watching the game on my phone. I should have taken
a picture of this. Somebody brought like maybe a twelve
x twelve television, flugged it in and had the game
on like an actual TV. I'm sitting here like you
guys carry that from the car. That's incredible. So I'm
able to watch the games, and you know, Sunday I
was able to be at home a little bit more.
Although the Great Foxes had a heated, oh my gosh,
(01:39):
super heated game. We were down some dudes. We're playing
the defending champs. I personally have never lost to them.
They got some new guys and it was a heated game.
Your boy did not have a good showing. But I
had a very clutch, one really clutch play. But pull
out the seventy two sixty eight game. Oh, they were
so pissed. Refs were getting me ear fall. Oh it's
so fun. And now that happened during the Ravens Bills game.
(02:02):
So I missed like the first quarter, and I missed
all the Lamar Jackson fireworks. This story this weekend in
the NFL. You know, I'm not going to sit here
and pick on Lamar. Don't worry. I know people you
always beat up on Lamar he lose his playoff, Yeah,
I do. When he's terrible. He was not awful. He
was not Jared Goff awful. Jared Goff three turnovers in
(02:23):
the red zone. That's terrible. But we don't kill Jared
Goff because we don't think he's a superstar. Right. He's
a very good quarterback, probably top twelve quarterback in the
league is number. Say he's hired in that. But you
know Jared Go's not going to get destroyed for an
abysmal game. Lamar Jackson probably is. However, he let them
(02:43):
back down the field and set them up for the
tie perfect pass in Mark Andrews. Oh, Mark Andrews felt bad.
I did see that he did not meet with the
media after the game, and I get that, dude. He
was probably inconsolable. We're talking about a veteran tight end,
probably a top ten tight end in the history football.
I mean, his numbers are great, maybe top ten to
two routs, maybe top fifteen. But Mark Andrews has had
(03:04):
an amazing career, and he had a brutal fourth quarter.
He had the fumble, the great poke out by Bernard,
and then he drops the two point conversion. You know,
and I don't know what you tell him. Guys, when
I lose a men's basketball league championship and I'm not
like even missing the game winning shot or whatever, I've
been consolable for four weeks. I don't want to talk
(03:25):
about it or a basketball. This guy literally dropped the
two point conversion that would have tied the game. Now, listen,
I'm not gonna you can't rush Andrews. You can if
you want out there, I'm not going to. Because there
was still a minute and thirty three maybe left, and
Josh Allen at home. I think he had one or
two timeouts. They would have been fine. Okay, they would
have been a Josh Allen would have led them down
the field. I don't have any doubt. But that game
(03:48):
kind of typified the weekend. You had a brutal drop.
You had three Ravens turnovers led to ten Bills points
in the Rams Eagles game. Two turnovers, both by the Rams,
led to six the Eagles. Eagles ineptitude in the red
zone is definitely concerning. And then you go look at
the Lions when you turn the bowl over five times,
Come on, you know, whinning that game. We're leaving the
(04:10):
Chiefs out of this because you know, the refs got
involved in anyways. So I don't know, I can't come
out here and destroy Lamar Jackson. I do think it's
a little hypocritical that people are more than willing to
pile on Jared Goff. But you got to break out
the kid gloves to handle Lamar Jackson. He just didn't
win the game. I didn't think he lost it. Obviously,
the pick and the fumble dug them a hole. But guys,
(04:31):
let's be real. You know, it was a good weekend
in gambling. Not great because the Bills didn't come through. Sorry,
the Lions didn't come through. But if you want to
drill down for a sec, and I don't think people
are talking about this, Josh Allen sixteen or twenty two,
one hundred and twenty seven yards passing that that's it.
You want a game when your quarterbacks who won one
(04:52):
hundred twenty seven yards through the year, The Ravens kind
of beat themselves three turnovers, multiple drops. Then you go
to the Eagles game also Sunday, Jalen Hurts fifteen of
twenty a buck twenty eight. But what wacky weekend? So
this I thought, my overarching number one thing that I
pulled out of this weekend was look at the four
(05:13):
quarterbacks remaining. We got Jaden Daniels versus Jalen Hurts. Both
those guys are extremely mobile. Jalen Hurts had an incredible
touchdown run. I think it was like forty four yards.
Jaden Daniels needs no introduction. That guy's just a freaking superstar.
I mean, he is so fast. He was credited only
with fifty one yards wresting, but it felt like half
(05:34):
of those were super duper clutch. And he's a cheap
code on fourth down Washington three for four and fourth down.
And then in the other game he got Josh Allen
extremely mobile and Patrick Mahomes who is I'll go nimble, Folks.
You need a mobile quarterback in today's NFL. You have
to if you want to win at the highest level.
You just have to because the defensive ends and the
(05:56):
exotic blitzes are getting so intense in the NFL. Jared
Verse was a really good college football player at Florida State.
He already looks like he's knocking on the door of
the TJ Watt Miles, Garrett Class. I mean, Verse was
a monster and just wrecked multiple plays by Jalen Urtz,
(06:17):
took aim out a field goal range. He's everywhere. So
I don't know, Rob, that's my overarching takeaway. Sorry, you
need a mobile quarterback in this league. And we're gonna
see probably four of the best eight quarterbacks here on
conference championship weekend next Sunday.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, I would agree with you.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
And that's not a shot at guys like you know,
Garrett Goff, I know what a terrible game on Saturday.
And Joe Burrow, who for my money, is like right there,
top three four quarterback in the gas still nimble, right,
but by and large, if you go through the top ten,
wherever your guys are at a minimum, they can scramble
around a little bit. Like Patrick Mahomes is obviously not
(06:57):
as well. Let's take it back. If you're gonna say
mobile quarterback, you we have to different Like there's Lamar
Jackson and there's like a big gap and then that's
where you kind of start the rest of the guys.
Like if you're going to say Patrick Mahomes and Lamar
Jackson both qualifies mobile quarterbacks, then that's a totally different
conversation because one is like a Maserati Bugatti and one's
like a Honda Civic.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
If you're not compared to Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Okay, I would put him more. Why don't we call
Lamara Tesla because his explosiveness.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Okay, you got a Tesla?
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Now you know I will not support anyways. I would
go Mahomes is more of a He's not He's not.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
A Corvette Bard focus.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
We're going to kill the team freaking focus.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
But to your bigger point, I agree with you, like
I think that in today's NFL, especially with the way
defenses play now where they take away the deep ball
for the most part you brought it up what a
year and a half ago, teams are warning that too
high shell a lot. Philadelphia famously Fangio almost every defensive
set they start with shows two high safety.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
They don't always play that way, but they run that
a lot.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
And so when they're encouraging you to kind of matriculate
the ball down the field and be patient, and you're
not gonna get the shot, Blazer used to get.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Three four or five years ago.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
What you need is to have a quarterback who can
extend plays, who can buy that extra second or two
that's gonna allow not every play, but three or four
times a game, someone's gonna sneak out beyond the coverage
and that's your chance to strike and make a big
play happen. We saw that happen a lot on Sunday night.
We saw that happen a ton on the Lions Commanders game.
(08:40):
And I think that you're onto a good path on
that one.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
I took a little bad. Oh sorry, go ahead, go ahead,
go ahead ahead, No, go ahead. I feel bad. We're now
like ten minutes into the podcast and I haven't mentioned
Saquon Barkley's heroics. I mean, this guy is just incredible.
Sequon Barkley, Like, if you're a New York Giants fan,
if you're in the office, you are just kicking yourself.
How do we let this guy go? And I know
he probably would not be amazing with the Giants because
(09:06):
their offensive line stinks, they have no quarterback. But twenty
six for two to h five average seven point nine
yards of pop. He went the four catches for twenty
seven yards like he is such a weapon. I mean,
the guy he killed the Rams this year, just destroyed
them in both games. And they're probably gonna need him
against Washington here because we don't know what's up with
(09:28):
Jalen hurts Man. He is getting dinged up. I saw
if you uh subtract the sack yards. He was sacked
hurts by the way, sack seven times. The Eagles had
sixty five net yards passing. That's the fewest by any
team in a playoff game in the last ten years.
Sixty five net yards and they won and covered the spread. Oh,
(09:50):
I guess it depends on the line. Six might have
been a push for some, but it was five five
and a half. Hopefully he didn't get six and a
half late. But it's weird, Rob. This turned into a
passing league, and I think this season that it just flipped.
You know, the six, the six teams with the most
rushing yards the season all made the playoffs. That's the
first time that's happened, I think in forever. It's a
(10:13):
rushing league. You've got to have a run game. The
Buffalo Bills. If it wasn't Ty Johnson, it was James Cook.
If it or it was Ray Davis, or it was
Josh Allen, Like you must have a run game. Washington
didn't have much of one, but they got Jayden Daniels
and the Lions defense thing. So listen, we could go
on and on. But home team so far in the
playoffs eight and two. Okay, both of the two losses
(10:38):
came at the hands of Washington, who went to Tampa
and one and went to Detroit one. Can they pull
it off again?
Speaker 3 (10:44):
I do.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
That's a tall order, but there was money coming in
on Washington as soon as the line came out. I
think it's probably another good teaser weekend. We shall see,
But I don't know, Rob, do we need to give
any more praise or accolades before we file on the
Kansas City Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Let me just say shout out to Josh Allen, you know,
because I know a lot of the conversation here Sunday
and to Monday is gonna be on the Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
You know, Mark Andrews.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
That quite possibly the worst night marriage fourth quarter any
professional athlete can have in my lifetime, Like to have
the fumble and then to drop the du Wayne conversion.
Like I know that this is gonna be an absolutely
brutal day. If you know, Mark Andrews sent him a call,
cinema text, make sure he's okay, because that's just that's
got a way I knew mentally and emotionally, you're gonna
(11:35):
also have People were gonna blame Lamar Jackson because of
the two turnovers, and even Lamar Jackson himself was you know,
he took it upon himself a lot stronger than I
thought people were nationally in the media, because in the
media it's always like we pick and choose which guys
we like and which guys we don't. And Lamar Jackson,
especially in the last year, has almost become a guy
(11:58):
where you cannot criticize him, like because his numbers that
are so awesome. He's gonna be a three time MVP,
three time First Team All Pro, like, he's gonna have
all the accolades at this point save the playoff success.
And because he marched them back down the field and
he was in position to tie the game theyre a
mid and half left, Everyone's like, well, you can't blame Lamar.
He can't blame Lamar, And to his credit, Lamar Jackson
(12:21):
went up on the podium last night after the game
and said, look, we're a team. It's not just Mark Andrews.
In the first half, I had two terrible turnovers and
he was very specific.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
I knew what their coverage was.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
I didn't look the safe off and I threw a
terrible pick next one on the fumble at an RPO,
I tried to do too much with it in the elements.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
That was a terrible idea. Squeezed it fumble. It is
what it is.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
When I have turnovers like that, that's why we lose
the game. And he ends up cursing and that became
a viral moment there for a minute. But while everyone's
focusing on the Ravens and I understand that part, can
we just take a second to acknowledge that Josh Allen
is one of the greatest postseason performers we have ever seen.
(13:04):
I know the numbers, like the one loss record doesn't
necessarily show that because I think he's went now seven
and five and you're like, well, seven and five, that's
not that great. Josh Allen now has thirty touchdowns against
four turnovers in his playoff career.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Last night's game against Baltimore, where he went for what
was like a buck forty seven total. Was probably his
worst postseason game and like three seasons.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
But wait, wait, wait, hold on, hold on, it was
worse only by the numbers. It's not like he was
I didn't think he was bad, did you? No?
Speaker 3 (13:39):
No, no, But that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
It's like, that's that's where he is, Like, he's it's
hard to find a great NBA compared to a lot
of our listeners NBA fans. But it's kind of similar
to Jimmy Butler, where Jimmy Butler's never gonna win MVP.
With that case, Josh Allen might, but he hasn't won
an MVP, He's never been an All Pro. He doesn't
have the skins on the wall that Patrick Homes and
(14:01):
Lamar Jackson have.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Those are two main contemporaries.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
But what he does have going for him is that
when he gets to the playoffs, he takes it up
to a level that nobody else can reach this side
of Patrick Mahomes, Like you just mentioned, Jalen Hurts. Jalen
Hurts in four playoff game, four playoff wins, I think
averages one hundred and forty five passing yards a game
like it's junior varsity. Compared to what Josh Allen is doing,
Josh Allen has kind of reached this point, a point
(14:28):
that I didn't think he was ever gonna get to,
to be quite honest with you, where he's merged the
yolo Josh Allen with the conservative Josh Allen. And he
does makes just enough plays here and there. He saw
it last night. You know, he gets a key seven
yard run where he just throws his body through four
guys to move the chains and he gets the touchdown
a couple of plays after that. And he can do that.
(14:51):
But what he can also do is, hey, we cannot
stop Baltimore unless they fumble or turn the ball over.
We have not slowed these guys down at all. It's
just self inflicted wounds. So we got to keep them
off the field. Josh, we need you to throw three
yard passes all game and don't get greedy, don't push
the ball down the field. This is how we have
(15:12):
to play to win. And he can do exactly that.
He's graduated in this quarterback game and it's great to see.
I just hope selfishly that when we see mahomes Allen,
what it's the fourth time now in the playoffs that
we get more of the vintage mahomes Allen, not what
they've become now where they're both almost conservative out.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
I want to see the fireworks.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
I have not broken down Chiefs Bills. Obviously, the Bills
won the earlier meeting. Let me see here, thirty to
twenty one at home. It was a it was a
good game. It was Josh Allen kind of took over
with his legs, and I think this is something. This
is like a jumping off point. Josh Allen in the
first meeting against the Chiefs twelve carries fifty five yards,
(16:07):
obviously the huge high leverage play where he raced in
for the touchdown. If you watch CJ. Stroud this weekend,
he was able to scramble six carries forty two yards.
I haven't done all the homework again, the game's just finished,
but I'm very curious how the Chiefs do against running
quarterbacks because this feels to me like this is one
(16:28):
of these games where Josh Allen's probably gonna have closer
to fifteen carries. I'm very excited for this obviously. You
guys know I've become like public enemy number one for
Chiefs fans because of some comments I've made on the herd.
These Chiefs fans put together these long, like four minute
videos nobody believed in us, and then they'll clip off
like me bashing them in some way, shape or form.
(16:50):
It's like, Okay, nobody believed in you guys. You were
going for back to back Super Bowls. They had nobody believed.
I'm just we need new blood.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
Now.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Caitlin Clark's hanging out with Taylor Swift Chiefs games, and
now I think this is a reasonable segue rob to
get into this situation. Shall we say that unfolded in
not a good way for the league on Saturday, and
any way you slice it, this was a terrible look
for the NFL. Everybody and their mom watching this Island
(17:21):
game Texans at Chiefs could see what was going on.
The referees continue to somehow operate well as if there
are different rules for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Texans
were losing their minds kind of understandably when you' watching
this stuff go down. Texans had eight penalties for eighty
two yards, and you know, at one point in the game,
(17:44):
Troy Aikman, one of the best announcers in football, basically
lost his mind on what was happening with the refs
and the flags, and he essentially went viral on Saturday
for some of the comments he was making about the
Chiefs and Mahomes lobbying for flags. And I don't know,
Rob listen man, this We've talked about this, the NBA,
(18:07):
the league partners say whatever the hell they want. Barkley, Shack,
Steve and a always just rip. The NBA doesn't, nobody cares.
Roger Goodell will not stand for that stuff. He won't.
It's a bad look. You don't want them ripping your league.
Here's the problem when it's so damn egregious and everybody
watching the game with two eyes is like, what kind
of call is that? What's going on here? I do
(18:31):
believe the NFL is gonna have to have some internal
discussion and review, like, hey, guys, do we get this right?
Is this possible? Have the Chiefs really played in And
I'm not I'm going big picture here like four Super
Bowls and they have like one holding call, like how
is this happening? And it does kind of sort of
feel like they play by a different set of rules,
(18:52):
and the referees, I do believe, are gonna have to
either let everything slide this coming weekend or they're gonna
have to call every and it's gonna be an ugly game,
and you never want the refs to step in in
a big, big, high profile game. It's gonna be thirty
thirty five million people watching. But I'm just telling you
when Akeman and Buck are kind of sort of blasting
(19:13):
the refs and the calls and how the chiefs are
getting everything. And again, if you go online during and
I know TikTok was briefly shut down this weekend and
so everybody had to go to some other social media outlet,
and anywhere you went Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, there's memes going
around about Patrick mahomes on bended knee with a ring
(19:34):
and then you see like a female referee, and then
there's another one where like Andy Reid is talking to
the refs and you people are making jokes about it,
and it's just like, I don't rob I'm not sitting
out here being conspiracy theory guy. But you know, I
think it's okay to question, like, come on, something's got
to be up. How does this keep happening?
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Oh, you are speaking to the choir, my guy, I
mean Troy Aikman the exact phrase. And this was my
favorite one after the It was the second agree, because
there was two agreed, just roughing the pastors penalties.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
One of them where Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Kind of scrambled around, looked like he was gonna run,
realize it's gonna get any yards, so he tries to
slide down. Then he gets oh yeah, and Aikman the
exact phrasing was, oh, come on, he's not even a runner.
I could not disagree with that one more. He barely
gets hit. Now, as far as to your point, as
far as NFL analyst critiques of officiating, like that is
(20:31):
the worst you are absolutely gonna get, Like that is
this side of him cussing out the rep Like that's
about as far as they go when it comes to
the NFL broadcasting partners.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
And this Patrick Mahomes soft with the Mahomes rules.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
As people are calling it on social media, they've gone
too far. And I promise you NFL and I would
tag the NFL at the NFL rest they were listening
to this podcast. Patrick Mahomes is plenty good enough that
he does not need assistance from the refs to win games.
There is nothing more frustrating as a sports fan then
(21:12):
to see one team, or in this case, one player,
gets so many benefit of the doubt calls that nobody
else in the league gets. Jared Goff got decapitated on
an interception pick six, had to go into concussion protocol.
By rule, that is an illegal play, that is a
personal foul. Nobody was throwing a flag on that. They
(21:34):
was like, hey, that's what happens in football. Man Lamar
Jackson on Sunday Night, going out of bounds Number one
gets hip drop tackle once in the first quarter, they
don't call it. Later on in the third quarter, he's
a clear foot out of bounds. The defender still takes
him to the ground, and Tony Romo, to his credit, says, hey,
that was out of bound. That was a miscall. If
(21:57):
either one of those plays are Patrick Mahomes, I guarantee
you the flags being called.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
Yeah, I guarantee you that. In all, like a guy
might get thrown out of the game.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Like as good as Patrick Mahomes is, let's be honest
about it, he has benefited not just in the regular season,
not just in this game that we saw on Sunday
or you me on Saturday. Throughout his postseason career has
benefited from calls like this. Uh the win against the
Cincinnati Bengals, Oh gosh, they getting they get in the
(22:30):
field goal rage because of a very ticky tacked, you know,
personal foul going out of bounce. The Super Bowl win
against the Eagles was a pass interference call that they
had not called all game.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
But it's Patrick Mahomes, it's the face of the league.
Speaker 4 (22:48):
Whatever we can do to kind of you know, getting
a little extra boost like that, that's a problem in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
So they got to get that straighted out. Apple with you.
Speaker 4 (22:56):
I think next week when these two teams pay each
other Buffalo Kansas City, you're gonna find out very quickly.
Either they're gonna call it TICKI tack where everything gets
called and it's a ref show, or they're gonna let
these teams play. Josh Allen's gonna have to truck some
guy with the crown of his helmet you know, Patrick
Mahomes got to do that little half jog half trot
(23:17):
thing that he does. But you are gonna see either
some of the most physical football we've seen all season
or some of the most flag football we've seen.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Also, yeah, no, I totally agree. So here's the thing.
And again, if any of you out there actually play
sports often or have played sports in the past, you
know that there is an ongoing discussion with refs, and
you can get a vibe, Oh, they're gonna let us play. Oh,
they're letting everybody fly, or they're calling tiki tak stuff.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Right.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
So, my son's at a volleyball tournament Saturday and they're
playing this team and I don't know if you guys
have played volleyball, but the setter, you know, passes the
ball up to the outside guys who are hammering away
and what indoor, they can sometimes call lifts where you're
catching it as opposed to just setting it. Okay, And
in the first two sets we got called for one
(24:03):
lift and in the third set. The third in deciding set,
we got called for seven lifts by the referee. Our
coach lost it. The parents on the sideliner are like,
what the hell. I told like the tech like the
text chain of my son's volleyball team, Hey guys, if
I get thrown out of here, somebody give my son
a ride home. I've never been thrown out of a
sporting event ever ever, but I was like, this is this,
(24:24):
can't do this. So we end up losing fifteen sixteen
fourteen or whatever it was. It was total bologny. And
they called a lift on the game winning point where
our guy was up, you know, our six to one
guy was rising up to hammer away and they're like
the lift. It was like, come on. So anyways, he
claims the referee in the volleyball match that he went
to our team after the first two sets and said, hey,
(24:45):
you guys have had some lifts. I'm not calling them,
but I'm gonna start calling them now. And I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
wait what now. I didn't hear about this until afterward.
I talked to the coach on the other team and
I was like, I can't believe he called five lifts
in the third set and he goes, no, no, it was
seven lifts. I've never seen that. I was doing the scorebook.
That's a coach on the other team, and I'm like,
oh my gosh, this would be the equivalent of these
(25:06):
NFL coaches letting everything go for three quarters and then
all of a sudden calling ticky tackle ore in the fourth.
You can't do that. You have to get control of
this game from the jump. And Rob I just went
up and looked the acheman thing on the sideline, and
what really pissed off Aklan was and Mahomes does this often. Right,
You're racing toward the sideline and then you ease up
right before the sideline and trying to draw a flag,
(25:27):
you know, like a flop in the NBA. And Mahome
gets pushed and he's like, oh, he's flopping like he's
trying to win an Oscar Award. Now, they didn't throw
a flag there, but Aikman is just like, are you
kidding me? Really? And then the worst one that really
was a big one was when, like you said, the
two defenders kind of collide above Mahomes their helmets hit
each other. They don't hit Mahomes's helmet, and Troy Aikman
(25:51):
was said on air, they got to address it in
the off season, And I can tell you this right now.
I don't think, you know, Goodell and company are gonna
be happy with that when you watch a replayer like man,
they didn't freaking hit Mahomes, they hit each other, and
it's like, we can't keep doing this. It's just it
doesn't work. It's not good, it's not healthy for the league.
And yes, I am anti Chiefs. I did have the
(26:14):
Chiefs to win that game. They covered the spread for me.
Dott act like I lost to Bed. I did not.
But with the way that this game, you know, Rob,
We've talked about this the nfl A Sundays where there's
you know, eight games going on the one pm win No,
that's amazing. You're probably gonna get four duds and then
you're gonna get some awesome games. Okay, and it doesn't
matter because you got a couple good games going on
(26:36):
at the same time that were thrilling. Okay. The problem
with these Island games is there's not a ton of action.
I mean maybe Lion's Washington action, but you get a
chance to see slow motion replaced and everybody. Again, twenty
thirty million people are watching these games. Everybody is breaking
down every single play, and the refs are kind of
(26:57):
sort of getting exposed. The camera angles are incredible, the
slow mo is amazing, and it's like, this game is
probably really tough to litigate as it's happening, and I
don't rob help me understand referee assists, Like what the
hell is that? Because McVeigh had to burn a challenge
early in Rams Eagles when the referee assists could have
(27:18):
just been like, that's a catch, let's move on. I
don't know how referee assist works, do you no?
Speaker 4 (27:23):
And that's the problem because they there's no rhyme or
reason as to when they use it or don't use it.
Like there were certain times throughout the regular season where
you're like, hey, that's clearly an interception, the guy caught
it or has clearly a fumble. We don't got to
waste a challenge, We don't gotta go, we don't gotta
go to commercial break. They're like, hey, replay assists determined
that was a catch, that was whatever, his knee was down, cool,
(27:46):
keep it moving. And then there's other times where it's
clear again and for whatever reason, replayces doesn't step in,
And that's kind of where we're at with the NFL.
And and to your point about it being slow, and
I guess you could say bad football to anybody who
says that they love snow football games, like, oh, it's
(28:08):
football weather.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
You see the blizzard.
Speaker 4 (28:09):
We got negative eight degrees and ice and a blizzard
all day. I don't know about you, but I was
very excited to see Lamar Jackson Josh Allen the two
MVPs go head to head. I was expecting fireworks, yeah,
and instead we got sloppy Lamar Jackson and muted Josh
Allen because everyone's so worried about the weather and they
(28:32):
couldn't do. And then the worst one was actually the
earlier game the Eagles and the Rams, where it was
so bad where they were saying during the broadcast, yeah,
these teams are afraid to throw the ball pass like
nine yards because the receivers can't change directions, and it's just, hey,
you gotta chop your feet a certain way and hopefully
(28:53):
you can fall forward. And then it's just like, like,
I know, it's cool to say you played in snow
and it looks great on TV, but the actual football
of it was just.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
You know, not great.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
It was it was pedestrian at best. And I'll say this,
I got the feeling that these guys are coaching a
little scared. Nobody wants to make a mistake, and the
quarterbacks have rained it. You don't want to make a mistake.
You don't want to Jared Goffit. He fumbled in the
red zone. In the red zone, you know you don't.
I mean Stafford. I thought Stafford was okay. You know,
he did have a bad fumble, But like you, you
(29:27):
don't want to be the guy who makes it one.
I mean again, we're talking about games where there's what
eight let me see how many possessions were had in
this game? Usually it's what eight or nine drive? Yeah,
total drives. In Chiefs Texans, each of them had nine.
I mean, if you're turning it over on one or
two of those, your chances of winning go down significantly.
In Ravens Bills, there were nine possessions of each, So like,
(29:49):
that's what you're getting. You got to make the most
of them, and you can't turn the ball over. That's
just that's a killer.

Speaker 2 (30:07):
I guess the biggest winner of the weekend has to
be Jaden Daniels.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
Huh oh yeah, Oh he was a.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Pretty and spectacular Now, I will say the Lions. It's funny, Rob.
We we've been hearing about how great of a defensive
coach Aaron glenn Is, and oh, my gosh, that performance
against the Vikings a few weeks back. Oh, to lock
up the number one spectacular. I don't know, it's it's
almost like the Vikings weren't that great. You know what
(30:33):
the Rams do to them? Easy to confuse Sam Darnold,
I mean the I got some notes heer on on
the Detroit defense, the mighty Detroit defense. So Washington had
four touchdown drives of seventy or more yards. They had
nine drives and five touchdowns. Detroit had five turnovers. You
get to the red zone, Washington four for four. You know. Oh,
(30:53):
this was a key one the fourth downs. I need
to talk about this for Jadan Daniels because I'm just
telling you guys, like the Ego's defense is obviously better
than the Lions, and Daniels won't go crazy, but fourth
and two inside the five, and they went for it.
Fourth and two inside the red zone eight minutes left,
(31:16):
they went for it. They end up getting a touchdown.
Like these guys go for it because of Daniels and
his speed and they know every possession matters. And against Detroit, listen,
Detroit's gonna score. And for Cliff Kingsbury to get like
very few looks in the head coaching front, while Aaron
Glenn is the toast of the town. I don't know, guys. Again,
I know they lost Daidon Hutchinson and a bunch of dudes,
(31:38):
but this defense was never great. And I'm not gonna
crap on Ben Johnson because Jared Goff had a bunch
of bad turnovers. The only only knock was that late
gadget play in the fourth quarter where Jamison Williams was
supposed to throw a pass and you know he's a
smart enough player to look downfield and be like, oh shit,
there's two defenders that I probably shouldn't throw this through
(31:59):
it anyway.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Kicked off, he went full twenty eighteen. Josh Allen just like, hey,
someone's down there, I'm throwing it up.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
I think he was the one who was like mimicking
sex with the end zone. Did you see that on
a celebration. It's like, Jamo, my guy. Now, I wonder
this awesome Lions two year run here. If they lose
Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, do they take a big
step back?
Speaker 3 (32:25):
Are you asking me? Or is this you want to change?
Speaker 2 (32:27):
I mean, I'm trying to I'm just talking through it.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
Absolutely they do. Yeah, we saw what happened with Philadelphia. Yeah,
they when they lost both their coordinators. Again, when your
head coach does not call either side, he's the CEO coach,
Nick Siriani. Look how quickly that melted down in Philadelphia
last season, Like I mean, he was on the hot
seat coming off of a ten win season or ten
to eleven win season before that. The last time it
(32:53):
happened where a team lost both coordinators and the same offseason,
lose two thousand and four with the Patriots and they
lost Fornell and they lost Charlie Watch weisch wents a
Notre Dame. That's the next season they go from twelve
and four Super Bowl. So I think they went ten
and six and lost in the divisional round. So it's
impossible to say, oh, yeah, we're gonna keep rugging along.
We're gonna be right back where we were this time
(33:14):
this year and then last year with an Anty JamMan
gam It doesn't work like that. You know there's going
to be some kind of regression. Now maybe that doesn't
mean that you're not gonna make the playoffs, but you're
definitely not gonna be well with a fifteen and two
the hell though, I can promise you you're not gonna
do that. And unless Dan Campbell has another Ben Johnson
(33:36):
on the staff, like and there's a quarterback coach we
never heard of that can call those same kind of
plays like good luck.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Who was Ben Johnson, by the way, like four years ago.
It's a good question nobody knew he was so quickly.
The lines are Eagles minus five. It was minus five
and a half. Obviously, when Washington takes down a number
one seed. Eagles didn't look amazing for the second straight
week in the playoffs. They did lose their cornerback, young
kid Mitchell, the rookie. That seems significant. I know someone else.
(34:06):
Oh no, that was in the Buffalo game, Tarron Johnson
went down. I don't know. The Eagles are a heart
attack waiting to happen. Obviously, you gotta wait on the
the weather report out of Philly. These are two outdoor games,
so I'm sure it'll be sub thirty five degrees. But
the kicker missing two extra points but making a couple
(34:26):
of field goals in the snow was kind of odd.
Jake Elliott, who has regressed big time. However, Washington's kicker,
I don't trust him a lick, which probably means some
more high leverage four downs from Jade Daniels early lean.
I yes, I'll take the Eagles. It's just right now.
It's fun to back, you know, Jamee Daniels. And then
(34:46):
the other one. I'm a little surprised that this Chiefs
only opened minus one at home against the Bills. And
you guys know what, most of these trend betters, please
don't be a trend better do is? They say? Oh,
Patrick Mahomes under a field goal, that's an automatic bet.
But interestingly this was one and a half and early
money came in on Buffalo. I'm rooting Bills here. I
(35:09):
want them to win, but come on, Patrick Mahomes never
loses this game. He doesn't. The only guys to beat
him at Arrowhead were Joe Burrow in overtime and then
Tom Brady in overtime. I'm pretty sure in the postseason,
right Rob.
Speaker 4 (35:26):
Oh, I know, I know Burrow. I'm pretty sure it
is Mom's early in his career though.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Yeah, yeah, it was Brady in overtime. I remember, I was,
I remember where I was watching. He kept going to
gronk over the middle in overtime, and I don't think
they ever was that.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
The game where Tony Romo kind of made his celebrity
where he was yeah, right, and then it's completely fallen off.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Since then, has it fallen off? I mean I haven't been.
Speaker 4 (35:48):
People have turned on Tony Romo in a big way.
I know you're not on Twitter like I am. I
know you're more of an IG guy, but oh yeah,
people really are over that Tony Romo.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
Experience, like him and Nance. It's fine, So I guess
I will. I'll say Eagles versus Bills early early. The
only bet I have currently is I tease the Bills up,
I tease the Eagles down, and I tossed in Ohio State,
which plays tonight down. Ohio State's up to nine, So
I think you know you use a seven point teaser
(36:19):
Eagles kind of teaser. Dumb, You're not going through seven
You're just getting a plus two, which is kind of
silly and pointless, and Buffalo up to eight. So I
think they're gonna be able to hang So that that
is my early bet. And obviously, if if you know,
Ohio State ends up losing to Notre Dame tonight, we're
not going to preview it. You can go back to
the Dan Wolken interview last week. I'll RePOP that. Yeah,
(36:44):
so I think Ohio State wins and my guess is Eagles,
and I guess I'll go bills with win. I don't know, Robie,
do you really think they could pull this off?
Speaker 4 (36:55):
Not if they play the way they're on Sunday now
they are. They're not going to be able to tow
out Chiefs the Chiefs. They are not gonna be able
to be conservative, control the ball, play defense like that's
what the Chiefs have been winning with all season. You're
not gonna be able to do that to them, and
that coach and that quarterback. It's just not gonna happen.
You were gonna need Josh Allen two, three, four, five
(37:18):
times to make a Josh Allen all Caps play. We
saw it in the last game. It was that twenty
seven yard touchdown on fourth and two, Like that was
the play. You need Josh Allen to do two or
three of those for them to have a chance to
win that game. So that one I'm still not ready
to pick. I'm still kind of marinating on it. I
don't know how you're betting against the Commanders though.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Oh oh yeah, it was a fourth you're right, fourth
and two with two seventeen left. They were up twenty
three to twenty one, so a field goal and would
have got you, Oh we're up by five, and Mahomes
would just come down the field and get a touchdown
and you lose. So they let let Josh Allen carry
an amazing touchdown run. Now I'm looking at that game.
(38:01):
So two interceptions by Mahomes won by Allen both teams.
That was a close game. That was a really close game.
Now the Bills were at home. Obviously I haven't checked
to see injury wise, but I'm just telling you, guys,
these Chiefs continue to play just a deestrian offense. They
(38:21):
had two hundred and twelve yards against the Texas. Now
the Texas defense is good, right, but two hundred and
twelve yards really, and Mahomes was under duress. They got
him three times. I think this could be, you know,
one of these like Von Miller Ageless Wonder games and
the and the Bills show up. I'll be rooting heavily
for the Buffalo Bills. Me to wonder if I wonder
(38:41):
if I need to get a Bill's jersey, If you
could get any Bills jersey to wear, throwback or current,
who would you go with?
Speaker 4 (38:47):
Oh, Okay, I'm gonna take Josh Allen off the table
because it's too obvious. Yeah, I'm gonna roll with Andre Reid.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Oh, I was gonna go read or Thurman Thomas. Okay,
I gotta say I like, even as Jets fan, I
was I respected those Bills because they got to three
straight Super Bowls, just like respect the Chiefs. I just
you know, I don't like the Chiefs. You know, they
win everything. Let's let someone else get in there.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Are you?
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Are you really betting against the Commanders though quickly early
in the week. I mean you can say it you
got the Eagles to win. I understand that point, but
are you really betting a game? Daniels has more playoff
victories in this postseason, too, than he has negative plays one.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
Oh, my gosh. Wow. So I'll just I'll he.
Speaker 3 (39:35):
Punted one time in the playoffs so far.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
That's insane. Let me answer a question with a question.
Are the Eagles going to turn the ball over five times?
Speaker 1 (39:44):
No?
Speaker 2 (39:44):
Are they going to turn over three times? You know, like,
if you're telling me Hurts is going to be awful
and a screw up, then yeah, I think Washington will
have a chance. I don't see Philly. I'm strying to
see if Philly even has a turnover this postseason. Oh man,
they uh yeah, they didn't lose a turnover against the Rams,
and then last week against the Packers they had zero
(40:09):
turnovers and the Packers had four. So I mean they're
plus six in turnover ratio in the postseason. I'm sure Washington.
Let's see what Washington was. They were plus five against Detroit.
You ain't losing that. And then last week against Tampa,
Tampa had the brutal fumble in the in the red
(40:31):
zone and that was the only footbal So both teams
are plus six in turnovers and one of those two
will I mean, come on, it's gonna happen. I thot
Eagles defense is really awesome, man.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
They're really good. But Jane Daniel's really good too.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
He e's fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (40:46):
The five feels like Steeley and I went three in
one of my picks, just saying.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
So, oh, so you're on Washington.
Speaker 4 (40:50):
I'm on Washington, Jason. I'm picking sixty two percent winners
since November.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
Oh okay, all right, so wait, what was that you
used to have picks?
Speaker 3 (41:00):
You called it something I still do. It's called the
friendly fade.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
Friendly fade.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
So you've turned it around since.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
I mean, I was in such a bad hole that,
you know, I had to go on a hot streak
to finish at fifty three percent.
Speaker 3 (41:10):
But in the postseason, just went three and one on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
Cooking with and you're you're taking Washington, and then who's
the other one?
Speaker 3 (41:18):
That one? I'm not sure yet, not sure yet.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
No, no need to get the pick in early. All right,
that's it for today. Enjoy the Natty tonight. Can't wait
to talk about it tomorrow. See then,
