Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up? Straight Fire? I am, It's me Jason McIntyre,
straight boy Yer for Wednesday, September the seventeenth. Here we go.
It's a beautiful, lovely Wednesday, middle of the week. Not
a whole hell of a lot happening except five quarterbacks.
Apparently we'll be down this week in the NFL. And
(00:31):
oh my god, this is what's so depressing about. I mean,
we're in week three in football, right. We wait all
we wait, what February to September? We wait seven months
for the season to start, and here we are in
week three and the following quarterbacks are already hurt. Brock
Purty definitely out with turf till, Justin Field's likely out
(00:52):
with a concussion. JJ McCarthy out two to four weeks
with an ankle. Joe Burrow so surgery on toe, out
three months. Jaden Daniels knee questionable for the Big Raiders
game on Sunday. Listen out. I'm not here to rank
the ten quarterbacks in the league for you, but I
(01:13):
can tell you, without a question, without a shadow of
a doubt, Joe Burrow's in the top ten. Jaden Daniels.
I know it's just one season, but he looked like
a top ten quarterback and for my money, brock Perty
is in the top ten. So three of the ten
best quarterbacks in the league already likely down for the count,
and Daniels has the best shot to play because it's
(01:34):
a knee. And I will just explain it this way.
If you look at Washington's schedule, this is actually a
good spot for him to just sit and heal. Remember
they played last Thursday, right, and it's a matchup against
the Raiders, who are going to be wobbly. Right, Raiders
played on Monday night football. Then they have to travel
to DC. And I'm not saying Marcus Mariota could definitely
(01:58):
get the job done. But given the fact that the
line went down from six to three, I think it
seems like the market is telling you, hey, Jayden Daniels
probably not gonna play. It's a non conference game. If
you lose, it's not the end of the world, because
guess what tiebreakers in the conference matter. And the following
week they've got the Atlanta Falcons. And you guys know,
(02:20):
I'm bullish on the Falcons. I like them a lot.
This week against Carolina on the road line is soaring.
And if Washington can't catch Philly in the division and
they're battling Atlanta for the wildcard, Bert that head to
head much up is gonna be enormous. So I my
gut is telling me they may roll with Marcus Mariota
this week. I mean, listen, Marcus Mariota, as old as
(02:42):
you like to think he is, he's not that old.
Remember him and Jamis went Jamis went one and Mariota
went two in the draft a decade ago. So Mariota
feels like he's been around forever. He's only thirty one.
Oh my gosh, turns thirty two in October. He had
that early run in Tennessee and then kind of petered out.
(03:03):
Started most No, no, he didn't actually start much with
the Yeah, he was a backup in Vegas with the
Raiders during COVID, then Atlanta, then Philly then washed it.
So you know, listen, I think if you're just planning
for a game Cliff Kingsbury, since he had Mariota last year,
I don't think there's a steep learning curve for him
(03:24):
to jump in a spot start against the defense. That's
nothing special. You know, Drake May did okay things. Justin
Herbert was pretty flawless on Monday. So I think there's
a spot where you probably sit Jaden Daniels just out
of an abundance of caution. You know, these quarterbacks men,
you can't have him go down. It's just stinks. It's
(03:47):
like in the NBA playoffs when Tyrese Haliburton goes down,
Well that was a finals, you know, game shit, that
was Game seven. But historically, you know, Jeph Curry right
with the Warriors, Game one, Warriors Timberwolves, Curry goes down,
Warriors were able to win, but you knew without Curry,
there's there's nothing here, like what am I doing? And
(04:07):
it's it's kind of a tough sell. Hey, Monday, Sorry,
Sunday one pm Eastern time. Feel the excitement Geno Smith
versus Marcus Mariota, Like, that's just that does nothing for me.
I'm sorry, Maybe you get excited about it. I just
that's not a game that has me like, oh, I
(04:27):
got to check that one out. And backup quarterbacks tend
to do that. Like if the Jets have to start
Tyrod Taylor, I don't even know, honestly, guys, I don't
even know that that's a game that I'm like gonna
focus on. It's it's It would be a pure red
zone Sunday move for me. The JJ McCarthy one was
interesting because I thought this was a get right spot
(04:48):
for McCarthy going up. Finally, he does not have a
primetime start, kind of buried in the deck at one
PM when there's a ton of other games and he's
at home against a Bengals defense that's not very good
or threatening. Like McCarthy could have cooked those guys. I mean,
Trevor Lawrence look good against them, Joe Flacco looked competent
(05:09):
against them, and then you saw Flacco against the Ravens
like total nothing right. So the Bengals defense is not good.
It would have been a great spot for McCarthy. He's
out and now two to four weeks enter Carson Wentz.
So obviously, with Joe Burrow out, here's the bat matchup
one o'clock Sunday. You know what, we'll go through all
the quarterback matchups. I hadn't thought of this, but we'll
do it anyway. So Jets Bucks is justin Fields versus
(05:34):
Baker Mayfield. Then you've got Jake Browning versus Carson Wentz, Like,
that's not exciting. I had thought I liked the Vikings there.
I've kind of backed off now I got to look
at Wentz. Wentz by the way, sixth team in six years.
That's ridiculous for a guy who briefly was like in
the MVP lead I think in his second or third
(05:56):
year in the league in Philly. And then it's Drake
may Aaron Rodgers, Daniel Jones, cam Ward CJ. Stroud, Trevor Lawrence.
These are one PM games, folks, Michael Pennox, Bryce Young
and the best one PM game by a mile is
(06:17):
Matt Stafford versus Jalen Hurts. Oh and there's there's two more.
Oh my gosh, Jordan Love versus Joe Flacco a Marcus Mariotto,
Gino Spent. Those are bad, bad quarterback matchups. Fortunately get
Stafford Hurts, which is a great game. I did take
the Rams plus three and a half there. I know
they're on the road. I do need to I haven't
checked to see if the Rams stayed east. Remember they
(06:37):
faced Tennessee. Can you call Tennessee the East? I think
it's the East coast. It's not quite the Midwest. It's
not the Is it the South? It might be the South.
I mean, I know that they play in the SEC.
But when you think of Nashville, I guess you probably
do think the South. But you know what I'm talking
in terms of football, Philadelphia obviously East. You think of
(06:59):
Nashville as But at any rate, those one pm games
not great. They do have four games at four o'clock
Broncos Chargers is gonna be excellent. I like the Seahawks
a lot against Spencer Rattler. By the way, Spencer Rattler,
I know people are saying he hasn't been terrible. Just
look at the spray chart on next Gen Stats. It's
(07:22):
all short stuff. He's not throwing deep nothing. And the
problem is when he falls behind, how you come back.
And it's one thing against Arizona and San fran it's
another against Seattle on the road. By the way, Arizona
and San FRANI he played those games, guys at home.
Now he has to go on the road. Haven't checked
the weather. I don't think it does it rain there
in September. It rains there all the time. Just kidding.
(07:45):
I think that Seattle defense really wakes up. They should
get Witherspoon back. I don't know how the Saints really
moved the football there. But we'll see Arizona San Frans good.
And then the Marquee matchup, which is better on paper
than an actual game, is Dallas and Chicago with Dak
Prescott going up against Caleb Williams, who, for whatever reason,
(08:10):
man Caleb Williams. Jeez, he is getting beat up in
the national media, and I'm like, kind of, I don't
think they're a good team. I don't think they're that
interesting to me. I'm kind of over the Caleb Williams things.
Sunday night football is Chiefs at Giants, and then Monday
is Detroit Baltimore. It's weird the when I frame it
like that and you pull the quarterbacks out, It's like, jeez,
is there any good teams in this league? Folks? Every
(08:32):
power rating you look at, there's basically four elite teams
right now, Bill's Ravens, Eagles, Packers. Now you could put
the Chargers in that class. Yeah, I don't care that
the Bengals are two to zero without Joe Burrow. They're
not elite. Sorry, that's just how the world works. I
don't think Detroit because they hung fifty on the Bears
(08:53):
is elite. They could get there, but I don't think
they're elite. The only team I think that as a
legit claim is the Charge. But we'll see kind of
what they're made of this week facing Denver. Chargers obviously
beat the Chiefs. I don't think the Chiefs are good.
So you know, you get all these backup quarterbacks. I
(09:14):
just it's just not as exciting, at least from my
point of view.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
All right, I'm pretty much done with Shadur Sanders. The
guy's got to actually accomplish something before we talk about him.
But he was a big deal at Colorado. The media
loved him and popular on social media. He had an
actual celebration. He was getting celebrities to the sidelines at Colorado. YadA, YadA, YadA.
He's now like a practice squad quarterback with the Browns.
(09:51):
And there's a report that comes out that, oh, Shaduur
was going to be drafted by the Ravens the fifth round,
the Ravens called Shade, and Shaduur said, yeah, I don't.
I don't want to go to Baltimore. I'd be the
backup to Lamar. Sorry, let me say allegedly Shador said this,
(10:15):
I have no interest in being the back up to
Lamar Jackson. He's young. I wouldn't get any playing time. Yeah,
I'm good. Thanks, And then the Browns drafted Shadure standers
in the fifth round. So, first of all, if we
are to believe this, and I should at this point say,
Chadur didn't exactly deny it. He did say, like, hey,
(10:38):
I've moved on. Let me read exactly. Hold on, let's
let me read exactly his quote, because it wasn't like
and by the way, this is Adam Schefter reporting this,
not some random jabbroni. But essentially he's saying, yeah, I've
moved on. I don't I don't even remember about the draft,
blah blah blah. I just want to play football. It'sah
(11:00):
blah blah. So essentially he did not deny that he
said no to the Ravens. I don't really talk about
anything in the past and whatever happened in the past,
that it is what is I'm more focused on now,
more focused on how this game that we just gone
and had figure out how to move forward now. So
not a denial, which is basically an admission that it
(11:21):
did happen. Let me ask you guys this right, so, uh,
you are a big deal coming out of film school.
Whatever film school you Let's just pick you USC film school.
It's around here. It's really good, Okay, And one of
the best movie studios says, we want to sign this guy.
We just what we got to lock him up. He
is really impressive. He's young. You're not gonna be able
(11:44):
to make movies now. We want to lock you up.
You learn the ropes, meet everybody, blah blah blah, and
you'll get an opportunity, but we want to lock you in. Okay.
And then this other movie studio which really likes you,
but it's kind of a poorly run studio. The boss
is a jerk, it has a history of flops. They
(12:07):
are interested in you too. Are you gonna turn down
the one movie studio with the great reputation and the
history and the ownership and the leadership just because you're
not gonna get an opportunity now? And you want to go.
Oh I gotta go. I'm willing to go to a
crappy organization with poor leadership just so I could get
my shot. Now, would you make that decision? Listen, this
(12:29):
is not any kind of flex or anything, but yes, obviously.
You know, I've been in TV now nine years, been
on various shows, worked with various people, and there have
been some people who have shown interest in a in
a Jason, when are you gonna get your own show?
You know, would you like one? Blah blah blah. I'm
not just jumping. I'm not desperate to get my own show.
(12:52):
If it's a great fit and the right leadership in group, yeah,
I would totally be open to that. I mean there
is a rich history of folks who are like, yeah,
I gotta get my show. I'm not bashing him. I
mean he's made a lot of money. But Bill Simmons
had his shot at a show on HBO. He's like, yeah,
let's do a once a week show or once a
month whatever it was on HBO, and it flopped after
(13:13):
like three episodes and was over. You know, like, you've
got to have the right fit and a good group
that you believe in and buy into That is the
Baltimore Ravens. If you were to put up on a whiteboard,
who were like, maybe you could ask CHATGBT. I'm not
gonna do it. You guys can do it. Hey, who
over the last let's just say twenty five years, make
(13:34):
it even two thousand, in the last twenty five years,
who have been the best run franchises in the NFL. Now,
I don't know how you'd quantify best run, but you know, success,
not changing your coach every year, stability in the organization,
These kind of things matter in the playoffs. Often the
(13:54):
Baltimore Ravens are on the short list for best run franchises.
And yes they have Lamar Jackson, but you know, Lamar
Jackson is like a spindley quarterback. He occasionally gets hurt.
You wouldn't want that opportunity to learn from a two
time MVP, be in the same building as him, be
under the tutelage of John Harbaugh, who by all accounts
(14:16):
as a great coach. Ownership is excellent, GM is excellent.
They draft great. Like it was like, who's telling Shador
screw that you're never gonna play? So what if he
sits for three years? What's the big deal. I mean,
like again, I'm not you don't want to look back
to like the nineteen eighties. But Steve Young went to
the Niners and sat for many years. Aaron Rodgers went
(14:36):
to the Packers, but sat for many years behind Brett Farv.
My home's only sat a year. It's not as common
for folks who sit a long time now. Jordan Love
sat for two years, three years, whatever it was. So
what's the big deal is Shador goes to the Ravens.
I just I'm flabb a gaster that he would have
said no to a great organization said yes to the Browns.
(15:00):
By the way, did you nobody even notices? I didn't
see you talking about anywhere. Dylan Gabriel came off the
bench against the Ravens and to a touchdown pass. I
don't know if they were protecting Flacco or just getting
Gabriel some reps, whatever it was, Like, that's a thing
that happened, Dylan Gabriel seeing time shardor not even close
to sniffing the field. So you know, you always want
(15:23):
to give your kids good advice. I don't know that
Dion gave his son great advice, assuming it was Dion.
By the way, Dion has enough problems of his own
at Colorado right now. They're completely irrelevant, They're not good
at all, and they've got quarterback issues. They've kind of
fallen off the map. But like that's what happens, you know,
when you make bad decisions, and again everybody's in a rush,
(15:47):
you know, Oh, how do I get my own How
do I get my own show? How do I start
to write movies? I don't want to toil in anonymity.
I want to be a star. I want to be
a quarterback instant. Like, just gotta take your time, guys.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
All right, Like, wrap up the pod with some college
football picks. Really good profitable weekend in college football last weekend,
I think it was three and one in the picks
here on the pod. This weekend, the slate is strangely
not great. Miami, Florida is moderately interesting because everybody doesn't
think Florida's good. But the line is only seven and
(16:45):
a half where it was for undefeated USF last week
it was like seventeen and they still covered with these
I think Miami is very, very good, and I want
to bet it, but I have not yet. It would
be Miami or Pass for me. But like a marquee
matchup is like Indiana hosting ill Like you know too, uh,
two undefeated teams. Illinois ranked ninth, Indiana nineteenth, and Indiana's
(17:08):
a five and a half point favorite. I would lean Illinois,
but I have zero dollars on that. If you notice,
we've stopped completely talking about arch Manning, who has looked
just pedestrian. I I don't even think you mentioned the
word draft in the same sentence as arch Manning. At
that point, there's no way he's going pro given what
(17:28):
we've seen through what is two or three games? Yeah,
three games, he's done absolutely nothing. I mean he's completing
fifty five percent of his passes. That's like Josh Allen
and Wyoming. Okay, and he ain't Josh Allen size and
doesn't have his arm. So let's just let's just put
a put a pin in arch Banning and we'll revisit
next next September. How's that? Which is interesting because it's
(17:49):
sorry to peel off the gambling, but if you just
look at this quarterback class we've been We've been hearing
for so long of this ballyhood quarterback class kid club Nick,
Are you guys paying attention to how bad Clemson's been?
Kpeklebnick is not having a good season. Now, maybe it's
the pressure of the NFL getting him to him, but
(18:09):
all these people who are gassing him up as like
a top five, top ten pick, I don't see it
at all. I'm not saying he's shador fall into the
fifth round. He's toolsy and he's a smart kid, but
I just I don't think there's any I don't see
how you could possibly justify him going in the first round.
And you know, you take Archie Manning off the board
who he left with, you know, and and I know
(18:31):
nuss Meyer showed well in the opener, but holy hell,
I mean, if he was so good, why is the
LSU offense putrid? I mean they're so bad that That's
the first question. Brian Kelly gets asked what's wrong with
the offense after a win over Florida? I mean, nuss
Meyer again, they're three and zero. They've played two bad
(18:53):
teams and uh, I'm sorry they played Florida, Clemson and
a bad team. Well, you could say Florida's not great.
He has three touchdowns and he's taken four sacks, and
he's six point five yards per attempt? Like, what are
you serious for a top five pick coming out of
the SEC. Now, if you want to say, hey, Jay, hey,
(19:15):
remember Joe Burrow first year at LSU. Fine, Fine, Joe
Burrow first year at LSU. The next year with Justin
Jefferson and was it Malik Neighbors on that team? Justin
Jefferson didn't know. It wasn't Neighbors, it was someone else. Yeah,
he went off and had one of the greatest seasons ever. Okay, fine,
are they imputting those ride receivers? Fine, then let's talk
about it. And that's by next year. So then you know,
(19:37):
my guy Sellers from South Carolina, who I love. I
don't know if you guys saw the shot he took.
He got concussed. Helmet to helmet linebacker comes through the
middle of the line, untouched and just drills and knocks
him out of the game. Hopefully Sellers can return. So
this bally food quarterback class that we loved, folks, what
do we do with John Matteer from Oklahoma? Okay, they
got an interesting one. That's probably the best game Oklahau
(20:01):
against Auburn and Mateer has he's got some skills. Oklahoma's
a six and a half point favorite. And you know, Matier,
I like what I've seen. He's obviously a much faster
quarterback and a bigger quarterback. I think. Actually, no, he's six'.
One he looks bigger and plays. Bigger maybe it's because
(20:22):
of his. Speed she's he's kid club nick. Size are
you kidding? Me? Wow oh my. Gosh that IS i don't, know,
GUYS i don't know what we're doing. Here oregon's a
thirty five point. Favorite how about that bet last Week
oregon Against. NORTHWESTERN i was mocked because of. That Dante
moore uh six, three two hundred pounds. Sophomore was he
(20:44):
A Michigan, no he WAS, ucla that's. Right so two
years ago he was AT ucla running around like a
chicken with his head cut. Off fifty three percent. Completions last,
year he essentially sits through eight passes Watching Dylan. Gabriel,
oh look at, that a quarterback sitting waiting his time
and studying under a good coaching staff and behind a
FUTURE nfl. Quarterback and Then Dante moore comes out this
(21:06):
year and he's absolutely. COOKING i, mean he looks really.
GOOD i think they Handle Oregon, state But i'm not betting.
That the BETS i have so, FAR i think one
fade has to be OF. Wvu, LISTEN i don't like
laying a big number With. KANSAS i got nine and a.
Half i'm, SORRY i got thirteen and a, half and
(21:27):
this is probably going to go. Higher they're Playing West
virginia at. Home wvu's season every year is the Backyard
brawl With. Pitt so the game Before, PITT wv lost
To ohio seventeen to. Ten then they Beat. Pitt they're
still celebrating a win over their bet over their hated.
(21:48):
RIVAL i think they get. That they lose To, kansas so,
no by the, way then they Host utah a, big,
big big game in two, weeks so this is kind
of a sandwich. SPOT i don't Think kansas is, good
BUT i Think kansas gets the job done and covers the.
SPREAD i am on The Wisconsin. BADGERS i don't know
when was the last time they were. Good i'm on
them minus nine and a half, ooh minus one twenty
(22:11):
so probably a little too much juice. There The. Badgers
they Host. Maryland maryland not really listen The. TERPS i
don't want to say they're not, good BUT i feel
like they're overvalued. Significantly this has gone up though it's
at ten and a. Half, Yeah maryland is, unbeaten but
(22:31):
they're also largely. Untested beating, tousand struggling to BEAT, niu
and then BEATING. Fau they have to leave the friendly
confines Of College park and go To. Wisconsin you just
can't go To Camp randall for an early kickoff and
expect to. Roll SO i like The badgers minus nine
and a half in that. One and if you're looking
(22:53):
at the top twenty five, matchups you, know the big
ONE i think Is Texas Tech. Utah SO i Have
Texas tech in the. Playoff that was one of my
bets to make the. Playoff, yes, No i'm. Bullish we
talked a lot about it this. Summer how they hit
the transfer portal. Hard it spent a ton of. MONEY
i really am rooting for, them but it's a tall
order to go To utah and take Down. Winningham they
(23:16):
are just a truck at. Home the line is only,
three but it's just creeping up to three and a
half as we record this on late On. Tuesday it's
tough for me to bet that because you just don't
bet Against utah at. Home, really it's. SILLY i am
looking at That michigan. Game i'm circling The wolverines in
that one of the potential bet and OBVIOUSLY i will
(23:39):
look At Notre, dame but no money on. That irish
will not go oh to. Three you can take that
to the. Bank purdue tough loss last week TO usc
they fought. HARD i don't know what they'll have left
in the tank Against Notre. Dame The irish oh and,
two but probably still headed to the. Playoff in, fact
if you can find it, Anywhere Notre dame to make, playoff, yes,
no even at o and. TWO i think they're gonna
(24:00):
have a good shot because, folks there's carnage everywhere and
The irish schedule the rest of the way is not,
difficult right that's it for. Today we are back. Tomorrow
talk to you then
