Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
What is up, straight Fire fan, It's me Jason McIntyre,
Straight Fire for Thursday, April the third. Oh man, the
great sports week just continues. Are we not on a roll? Folks?
Got the Final Four coming up this weekend. Duke trending
statistically is one of the greatest college basketball teams of
all time. That's not me, that's the numbers talking. You
(00:33):
had show a Otani and the Dodgers fall behind on
Wednesday Night five nothing to the Braves. Everybody's all right, Dodgers,
you can't win every game, you know, finally lose Chip
Chip Chip Show. Hey, Otani walk up home run and
the Dodgers are eight no, And I think that puts
them on pace for one hundred and forty eight victories
(00:54):
because nobody they can't go one sixty two and oh
probably not. And Otani on Otani Bobblehead Night goes just
epic stuff. Oh Man, The Dodge is gonna be a
show all summer long, folks. But I do have to
start the pod with some melancholy news. I'm sure you
guys saw this. The actor Val Kilmer, who's been in
(01:14):
just a litany of amazing movies, passed away at the
age of sixty five. I'll tell you why I'm mentioning
this shortly, but I just want to rattle. Val Kilmer
had an unbelievable role history. If you go look at
his IMDb, He's been in so ney movies. I was
reading about him. This is what happens when like somebody
famous guys who you you know, you don't think about
(01:36):
all the time. Obviously, Val Kilmer was in Maverick a
couple summers ago, but hasn't been in a lot lately,
so you start reading about him and you're like, man,
what a history this guy has, what a life. Obviously
Top Gun is his best role. I'm sorry some people
will say The Doors. I saw that once way back.
I don't totally remember it. But Top Gun, that's on
(01:58):
all the time. Just probably the greatest movie of the
nineteen eighties. That is not hyperbole. I mean, I'm sure
it's up there, but I believe it is probably the
greatest movie in the nineteen eighties. And he continued in
the nineties with this movie Heat. I'm sure you've seen that.
Pacino de Niro, he's great in that. He was Batman.
I don't know how many times he was Batman. He
(02:20):
was in Tombstone, an underrated movie you may not have seen.
If you're terminally bored this weekend and need something before
the Final Four starts, This movie called The Saint. Elizabeth Shoe,
who everybody loves. Oh my Gosh, she was in Karate Kid.
She was in Oh my God, Oh Oh Cocktail with
Tom Cruise. She was in the Saint with valcomic Saints.
I thought it was a pretty good movie. But I
(02:41):
bring up Valcomer because so you guys know before so
after I was in newspapers covering sports in Jersey, I
just was not loving lifestyle. I had met a nice
young lady who would end up becoming my wife, and
I was making peanuts working in a newspaper. I'm talking like,
I don't know twenty two thousand dollars twenty so basically
(03:03):
no money at all. Like what woman is gonna get with?
Want to get with me and marry me? If if
I like, I'm not making any money at all, and
like have no upward mobility like journalism, come on. So
I pivoted to magazines and I was able to move
into New York City, made some more money. And the
(03:23):
beauty of working in magazines, at like a celebrity magazine
is that you get to go to parties. And so
one night in New York City, they're like, Hey, there's
this party. Can you get in there. We know the
pr people they would love for the promotion. You might
get to talk to this person that person, and then
Val Kilmer who's on the list. And I'm like, oh, shoot, now,
(03:45):
like yeah, but Val Kilmer doesn't talk to the media.
He hates the media. Just you probably don't even want
to waste your time. He's like all right, well, you
know me, I'm a young idiot and I'm in there
and I see Val Kilmer just hanging with one of
his buds, just hanging and it's like very clear that
it's Val Kilmer. I guess he's trying to be a
little incognito. He had a hat on, but it was
obvious that it was him. It's just him and one
(04:07):
other guy. And I was like, you know what, why not?
And again I don't have the exact recollection of the conversation,
but I roll up and I'm like, hey, man, I
know you don't really do the media, but uh, you know,
I work at this magazine, Can I get a couple
questions in? And I think he was so taken aback
that I was upfront with I know, you don't like
(04:27):
the media and talking to the you know whatever. And
he's like, why not? And so his buddy walks away
and he gives me, you know, we start talking and
I don't exactly remember how the convo went, but it
was one of those moments where you're talking to this guy.
He is a huge actor, and again this he wasn't like,
this wasn't his apex. But essentially he sits there and
(04:50):
talks to me for a few minutes, and as you're
talking to him, you know, you're thinking, You're like, you're
you've got to be quick on your feet here. So
I'm internalized what he's saying. I'm thinking about my next question.
But it's also difficult to not like have this like
oh shoot effect where you're like talking to them and
you can see people around looking at Val Kilmer and
(05:11):
I have that, you know, I'm trying to act slide
with the microphone. It's not like in his face, but
it's kind of in my hand and I have my
hands up as like, you know, like I'm having a conversation,
but you don't want to. It looks losory if you
have the microphone out. So I kind of had it
in my hand, obvious that he could see. But it
was just one of those moments that I'll never forget.
It was like it was a cool bar the party
(05:32):
was being hosted at, and it was just like he
was he was totally fine, normal guy. And then it
ended and I don't even know if we used anything
because it wasn't like earth shattering stuff. Again, this is
over twenty years ago, and it was just one of
those like, oh man, and I always I was always
a fan of Val Kilmer and sixty five years old
is pretty young, guys. That's not ideal. Anyways.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, so I am reluctant to even talk about the
freaking Dallas Cowboys again. And I made this point on
the show, and I just a peek behind the curtain
if you guys are interested, and you're probably not so obviously,
you know, on the Herd, Cowherd will pick his main
topics and then there's others ancillary topics that will do
(06:23):
in the news section. And I sent a preemptive text
to the producers, Hey, I'm not doing any Aaron Rodgers today, Guys,
I'm not and they're like, well this was said, and
I'm like, I don't care. I can't deal with Aaron Rodgers.
There's nothing there. He just wants the attention. There's literally
nothing important happening. I'm not doing Aaron Rodgers. And I
(06:44):
don't usually do that. I'm like, I'll go with the
flow whatever, But for whatever reason, I just woke up
and I was like, I'm not faking the funk. I'm
sick of Rogers, you know whatever. And we don't do
Aaron Rodgers as a topic, but during a topic on
the Cowboys, I make a point to say, you know, Colin,
(07:04):
I'm gonna be this is on air, Colin, I'm gonna
be honest. I'm at the point where I'm over Aaron
Rodgers and I think the audience is too and I
think the Cowboys are headed that way. This MICHAEH. Parsons thing,
and that's a legitimate story, the Michael Parsons thing, which
I'll explain if you missed it is significant. Essentially, the Cowboys,
(07:25):
led by Jerry Jones, continue to be stupid when it
comes to paying your best and brightest, biggest players. They
drag it out, wait till the last minute, and they
got to pay through the tooth. The market keeps get
even after negotiating for six months. Many other players at
the position sign and so you're constantly resetting the market.
The move is to jump out early, get them locked up,
(07:50):
and then you make them the highest paid early before
everyone else, so you don't have to wait for Miles
Garrett and Aiden Hudgson and this guy and that guy.
You wait for four other guys, and the price just
went up another five, ten, fifteen, twenty million dollars. Who
needs that? And Jerry did that with Dak He screwed
up royally, okay, and now he's doing with Michael Parsons.
So of course there's the owner's meetings happening, and you know,
(08:14):
Jerry's like, well, yeah, I talked to Micah. I met
with Michah Parsons and made a point to take kind
of take a shot at his agent, David Muligeta, who's
you know, basically reset the market for Jalen Ramsey and
a bunch of other guys because that's what he does.
He gets his clients paid. And yes, I can see
both sides of it. His job is to get his
clients paid. That's awesome. I commend him for that. If
(08:36):
I'm a Cowboys fan or if i'm the Cowboys, you
do not want to pay through the tooth for a
pass rusher or any position really unless they're absolutely elite.
Michael Parsons is very good, probably top five at his position.
I would say he's better than Max Crosby. Other people
would say no. But the question is do you still
pay him top dollar when A You're not a contender
(09:01):
anymore and b your quarterback is the highest paid in
the league. Okay, and I think unequivocally the answer has
to be no. But the Cowboys continue to screw it up.
So Jerry Jones comes out and says, I don't even
know who his agent is. I'm not dealing with him.
I'm dealing with Michah Parsons because he's my guy. It's like, dude,
what are you doing putting the agent on blast, saying
(09:21):
you don't want to talk to the agent. You want
to deal with Micah? And what do you think Mike
is going to give you a hometown discount because you
like he likes you. I mean, Jerry, If I'm a
Cowboys fan, I'm just livid, folks. I'm telling you right now,
They're not going to be any good at all this year.
And most of us saw them their downward slide happening
last year. That run is over where they went to
the playoffs what two or three years in a row.
(09:42):
I think they won eleven games with McCarthy. They got
a bad coach. You have all the money tied up,
and Dak and I don't even know if cdee Lamb
got paid yet he might have I forgotten and Micah.
Really you're going to put all of it into those
three guys. This is not the Rams with staf Afford
and Cup and Donald. This is not anywhere close to
(10:03):
that that team. Also at Jalen Ramsey, they had another
good d dresser, I believe Leonard Floyd. They had OBJ
and everything broke their way. If you guys will remember
that year in the playoffs they led the Bucks by
a million, let the Bucks back in the game. Then
Stafford on Cork's a bomb and they were able to
pull out the victory NFC Title Game, I'm spacing who
(10:24):
the hell oh Rams Niners, and they needed a fourth
quarter rally to beat the Niners. And then in the
Super Bowl you got the no look Stafford pass a
great game and they hang on to barely beat the
Bengals like everything broke their way. They were obviously very good,
but this idea that the Cowboys are even close to
a Super Bowl. They're not even a top ten team
in the NFC. Guys, I'm not just taking shots at
the Cowboys. There surely are Cowboys fans out there who
(10:47):
are absolute homers who don't freaking get it. I'll tell
you the ten teams in the NFC better than the Cowboys, who,
by the way, went seven to ten last year with
a minus one to eighteen point differential. Okay, minus one
eighteen was uh what to third worst in the NFC.
Eagles are better, Washington's better, Detroit's better, Minnesota's better, the
Packers are better. I won't say the Bears yet, but folks,
(11:10):
the Bears have way more talent. So right already we
have five teams through two divisions. Tampa Bay is better.
That's six. And Atlanta. Do you want to give me
Atlanta for seven? You don't, Okay, fine, we won't take
Atlanta for seven. We'll just go six. Rams are better, seven,
forty nine Ers are better. That's eight. I don't know
(11:31):
if Seattle is better. I didn't even realize Arizona won
at games. Arizona will have a higher win total than
the Cowboys. The Bears will have a higher win total.
So like ten might have been generous, they might be
eleven or twelve in the NFC, folks, that's really bad.
They are going to be irrelevant this year. Okay, just
(11:53):
forget about the Cowboys. Just forget it. And Jerry has
totally butchered this. I would say trade Mike at this point.
But let me ask, who's given up two ones when
you got to pay Michael Parson's a massive contract. I
don't see that happening. What are you doing?
Speaker 1 (12:07):
So?
Speaker 2 (12:09):
I mean, like even teams with rookie quarterbacks like Bears
aren't doing it. Let's see who else has a rookie quarterback.
Panthers aren't doing it. Falcons even next year. They wouldn't
do it with Pennix. Like, it just doesn't make sense
to give up picks and then pay Michael Parsons. So
Dallas will end up paying him to keeping him, you know,
win six, maybe seven games, maybe eight at best eight,
(12:32):
and that'll be all she wrote. So I'm just I'm
out on the Cowboys and if I don't, yes, if
there's actual news something signed, sure I'll do it. Same
with Rogers, but I'm just shutting it down on the
Cowboys and and anything Aaron Rodgers related. It just they
don't really move the needle anymore. I don't think anybody cares.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
And we'll pivot to the NBA because there is a
huge game tonight. I think I'll be going Lakers hosting
the Warriors in what will feel, I believe like a
Game seven in the NBA playoffs. Folks, this game is
huge and why is it huge? And this is not
me hyping the Lakers, but on Wednesday night, the Denver
(13:31):
Nuggets decided, you know what, we're playing at home. We
had a tough double overtime loss. Thanks to Westbrook ruined
an amazing game from Jokic. Let's rest our guys against
the tanking Spurs. Remember, Darren Fox is out, Wemby's out.
Let's just rest our guys against the tanking Spurs and
(13:53):
we could probably still beat them. Westbrook started in the
backcourt with someone named Jalen Pickett. Is he the gid
from Kansas?
Speaker 1 (13:59):
No?
Speaker 2 (14:00):
Oh? Sienna? Wow? Holy cow? Yeah. They started Jalen Pickett,
who had seventeen, eleven and ten, which is not bad
as a guard. Russell Westbrook thirty points on twenty five shots.
DeAndre Jordan started center Hunter Tyson. I don't know who
that is? Oh Clemson? Yeah, yeah, I did not even know.
(14:22):
We know who's in the league. They start a Hunter
Tyson upfront who had eighteen points, and then Zeke Naji
who is just massive. He's just not worked out. And
the Nuggets lose at home to Chris Paul stefan Castle
and company. And why is this game big? Well, take
(14:42):
a gander at the Western Conference standings. Oh, would you
look at that? The Lakers and Nuggets are tied for
the three spot, folks, I cannot underestimate it. Number one
seed is okay, see in the second round they play
the number four seed. Well, the one beats the eight,
the four meets the five, and that's one half of
the bracket. The other half of the bracket the two
(15:04):
play seven, the three play six. As of now, the
two is the Houston Rockets, who the Lakers just beat
the other night. I think we can all agree, like listen,
Houston a really fun regular season team, fifty wins, they
were fantastic. I don't think even with home court advantage,
they're a lock to get out of the first round.
(15:25):
No cap Minnesota. If they're the seven, that's a major
problem for Houston, and Minnesota will have a talent edge
and the best player on the court in Anthony Davis
Anthony Edwards. I'm sorry. If it's the Clippers, I think
the Rockets are in trouble. So the Lakers at three
could possibly play Memphis at six. They would then have
(15:45):
to beat Memphis, which is just cratering fired their coach.
They're a mess, and then Houston. To get to the
Western Conference Finals, they've got to get the three seed.
They absolutely must beat the Warriors tonight, huge game. The
Lakers have seven games left, the Warriors have oh Warriors
(16:06):
also have seven, so after this will be six games left.
The Nuggets have actually played, they only have five games left. Interesting,
so the Lakers. This is a huge swing game, probably
biggest game of the season. I would not be surprised
if Lebron went for forty minutes. I would not be
shocked at all if Luca played forty minutes, Like this
is a game you got to have. Now, I understand
(16:28):
the Lakers still have two more against Oka. See Jason
don't cotcherr chickens before they hatch and yes, Okasee could
be playing for seventy wins as they continue to just
just put it on everybody. I don't they have one
loss in like their last what nineteen games. They're a
juggerna on in the regular season, undeniable. I saw stet
that they might have the highest net rating in NBA history,
(16:50):
they might have the greatest point differential and NBA I'm like, damn,
these are some impressive numbers. Still not afraid of them,
and they might beat the Lakers. I'm still not afraid
of them. And part of the reason is when you
watch how the Lakers are built and tonight you'll see
the Lakers in full. This is why I'm excited about
tonight's game. So Lakers with Reeves, Luca and Lebron are
(17:13):
so frickin difficult to guard. Golden State will have let's
just say they go Curry, Podzemski, Moses Moody, Jimmy Butler,
Draymond Green. I mean that plays right into the hands
of the Lakers. So give me the matchups. What do
you do? Do you put Draymond on Jackson Hayes and
Draymond is a help defender? Do you put Draymond on
(17:35):
Lebron and Jimmy Butler on Luca? Who guard Dustin Reeves
certainly is not going to be Curry or it could Podzemski,
I don't know, do you Jonathan Kuming on the starting line?
The Lakers are a matchup nightmare because they've got three
excellent wings Lebron, Luca and Reeves. Most teams have one
(17:55):
or two. And you know, I like Moses Moody as
much as the next guy. Arkansas razorback Moses Moody. I
don't think he has a chance against Austin Reeves, and
we know he's gonna struggle against Luke and Lebron, So
it's like, it's just I don't obviously you don't want
to face the Warriors because of the Curry factor. I mean,
(18:16):
the guy hit twelve threes the other night. Come on,
Jimmy Butler's gonna get to the foul line and he's
gonna play tough ass defense. But I don't know, I
just look at this this game as holy cow Lakers.
If they get that three seed, Oh my goodness. I
don't want to say, you know, chart the championship parade,
but my gosh, they have some real talent on this team,
and you guys can keep doubting them. I even saw something,
(18:40):
Hey man, you know what that Lakers twenty two game
stretch where they had their number one defensive league that
was fools goal. But this five game stretch where they
were terrible, maybe it's a seven game stretch that's the
real Lakers. I'm like, guys, they played eight games in
twelve days because they had games can sold in January
(19:00):
do the fires, and they reschedule them for all they could,
And now it's in March, and it just so happened
that they had like three back to backs in a row.
They were exhausted even when they came back from the
road trip against Houston, they look like as Monday night
still got the win. So now they get two nights
off face the Warriors tonight and Golden State is coming
(19:21):
from where were they the other oh Memphis. A lot
of the Warriors went to the LAFC game last night,
and it just just feels like a game seven Lakers Warriors,
because if the Warriors get it, suddenly they were and
played a host of first round game and the Lakers
probably can kiss the three seed goodbye because they still
have two against OKAC. So so much at play in
(19:44):
the NBA tonight this weekend. Obviously the Final Four is
coming up, so I'm not I don't even know this
Saturday schedule in the NBA. But also we should wrap
up by giving a quick shout out to Anthony Davis.
I know adaka Street Clothes aka always Dowed. He had
thirty four and fifteen against the Hawks, including the game winner.
(20:06):
And oh, by the way, fun fact, Derek Lively played
now he was on a Ministertreskian only sixteen minutes, but Gafford,
Lively ad All played now. The problem is the backcourt.
They don't They're not working with much Dinwiddie and Clay,
And yes, Clay kind of washed, but he did at
five threes. So MAVs sweeped out Hawks, hooray. And I
(20:30):
just can't take Dallas totally seriously because of the Kyrie
Irving factor. Without Kyrie, you need a bucket in the
half court, like, okay, Ad can be there for you,
But who's creating off the dribble, who's got into the rim,
who's putting pressure on the defense, Like they don't have
that guy. And I think that's going to show big
time if they're in the play in. And I just
(20:54):
I don't have a great feeling about Dallas heading it
heading into the playoff like some other people do. Now
Yet next year when Kyrie Irving returns in I don't
know what January. Sure, he might be great, but that's
still a long way to go. I think I talked
about it yesterday with Rothstein if you guys missed that.
(21:16):
But this the momentum seems to be behind Auburn. I
will add Broom Johnny Broom did not practice Tuesday or
Wednesday or waiting to see if he practices Thursday. Do
not treat this like an NFL Tuesday practice. Report for injuries.
(21:38):
It's just not the same. Could be precautionary. We just
don't know. And college basketball doesn't have to reveal anything.
But if you are looking for something negative, you know,
you look at the media predictions. All I see is
every single person picking Florida. That's it. Now, part of
that's to be expected. Florida is a better team. That
being said, I at some point point, you know, some
(22:01):
underdog somewhere is gonna rise up and do some damage.
Is it Auburn, I don't know, we'll find it. Is
it Houston? I have some concern, but man, Final four
is gonna be good. Saturday. All right, that's it. We're
back tomorrow. I'll talk to you that
