Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight fire with Jason McIntire.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up Street Fire, FAYMP, It's me Jason McIntyre,
Straight Fayer for Thursday.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Teper the eighteenth. Then we got a Thursday Night Barn.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Not so much Buffalo Bill's Miami Dolphins gad zoos. That
is not a good game. Bill's twelve and a half
point favorites. I think, you know, we'll talk about the
best bet in a minute. Josh Allen has totally on
these guys fifteen and two in his career against Miami.
I mean that's forty four touchdowns in those games, Like,
(00:45):
come on, I can't listen. I'd love to make a
case for the underdog year. I just I don't see it.
We saw a good Washington team on Thursday Night look
completely overwhelmed early in the season in Green Bay, and
I think that probably happens to Miami, which is still
reeling from the Miami game, the the loss at home
to New England. And you know, I'm not laying the lumber,
but I think Buffalo minus twelve and a half you
(01:06):
got to have it, and I'm going to have them
in at least one survivor.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
You don't want to burn Buffalo.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Because they got a lot of good matchups going forward
to If you go to Tha's site Cleve Analytics, you
can see Buffalo has Buffalo and Baltimore have some of
the most value going forward, and there's other good, good options.
We'll get to all that Friday. But today's pod we
have a great guest.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Albert Breer. Monday Morning Quarterback. We get into everything.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
I mean, listen, I don't want to totally bash Arch Manning,
but you know, I mean, he's the lowest rated passer
in the SEC. I think he's at like fifty five
percent completions. And also the college quarterbacks that are going
to be drafted in twenty twenty six, Manning's not one
of them.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
They ain't great.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
They're really struggling in college football this season. But mostly
Breer and I talk about this week. Do c J.
Stroud suck Eagles Rams? I make a case for the
Rams getting three and a half. I don't understand why
people are betting the Lions. It could be people are
betting early in the week when the limits are lower,
they move off the six. I saw it down a
(02:12):
four and a half. Now the limits go up Friday,
and then you can come in heavy with the six
figure bets on Baltimore at a lower price. We talk
about all the games this week, and I think you're
gonna like it. Without further ado, let's bring in my guy,
Albert Brewer.

he knows everything when it comes to sports.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
I know what sports fans.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Want, but for everything he doesn't. He knows a guy
who does.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Let's just say I know a guy who knows the
guy who knows another guy. All Right, let's welcome back
one of the most popular guests on Straight Fire. He's
a TV fixture, He's famous in Baltimore, he summers in Nantucket.
He's like one of the Ohio State big dogs, sitting
front row with the all.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Right, I've said enough nice things. Albert Breer SI dot Com. Albert,
How you doing, man.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Good?
Speaker 5 (03:15):
How you doing jam Matt?
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I'm excellent. I know.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Obviously this is a tough time for you. The Buckeyes
are playing bad teams, so you can't get too excited.
That being said, let's start with college football overall.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Your early read on the Buckeye season, are they going
to go back to back?
Speaker 5 (03:30):
I think you've got a chance to.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
I mean think Julian Sayan is playing really good football
at quarterback, and you know, Magic Patricia one of the
big questions coming in. I think it's done a great job.
They've got real identity on defense now.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
And look, I think they've probably got the two best.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Players in the country right now and their roster and
Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs, and so yeah, you still
have some questions of course, like well, you know, how's
the offensive line come along? You know, as part of that,
what does the run game look like we get into
late October in November? You know, Defensive tackle I think
will be the big question on the defense, you know,
(04:06):
but I think they can work that stuff out. The
talent certainly there. Repeat we'll see, we'll see if they
can pull it off. Takes a lot of luck too,
so you know, we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
All right, So I'm gonna bat one more college football thing,
but I want to back in using I saw an
interesting tweet from you this week about the how social
media is getting people like to lose their minds about
quarterbacks on like a week to week basis, you're awesome,
you suck, you're terribly people are going crazy. Can we
just start with arch Manning on that because for the
(04:36):
last seven months I heard he's the heistman favorite, this
guy's the man, He's gonna go number one. Listen, I
was buying into the hype. Vegas had him as the
heighttsman favorite. So it's not just regular people and podcasters,
but Albert. We've we've got like three data points so
far this season, two of them against bad teams. Arch
Manning has been bad this so far, fifty five percent completions.
(05:00):
So is that the Internet overreacting?
Speaker 3 (05:01):
What are you see?
Speaker 5 (05:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:05):
I mean, I think it's a product of expectations that
were you know, sent into the stratosphere because of his
last name, because it was recruiting ranking, and you know,
look like I remember having this conversation with I think
I called about a half dozen scouts who I know,
like I regularly go through Austin to talk to them
about this at the beginning of May, because I saw
(05:27):
the way too early mock drafts that had him number
and overall, and I'm like, that seems insane, Like I've
never seen that before where there is a guy who
has legitimately not.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
Been a starter yet.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
And I started two games, but those two games were
against a directional school and the worst team in the.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
SEC last year.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Right, So I called around and I you know, the
the opinion I got is like, we don't know either way.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
We just haven't seen enough, you know.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
I think like people look at it and think it's
all about like your height and your arm strength and
your athleticism, and there's so much more that goes into
the position then playing then then then chose the physical trades.
You been to the table, and so what they'd all
say is like, seems like a great kid gets.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
Along with everybody in that program, has a.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Great relationship with Quinn yours, which I think, you know,
says a lot about both those.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
Guys, and you know, he looks good so far on table.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
We just don't know because how often against what was
I think it was like Central Arkansas on ut No
it was it was Mississippi State and it was the
Central Arkansas Is that right?
Speaker 3 (06:25):
I think a state or UTEP maybe right?
Speaker 5 (06:29):
So whoever it was like it was.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
You know, in those two games, how often was arch
Manning running a play that didn't that wasn't running exactly
the way that they were prescribing it in practice?
Speaker 5 (06:41):
Right?
Speaker 4 (06:41):
Like? How often in those two games was the opponent
forcing him past his first re read? How often in
that in those games was the rush getting to him?
How often do you have to see him move? How
often did you have to see him bounce back from
a three and out or a couple of three and
outs in a row.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
How many different coverages do you see?
Speaker 4 (06:59):
You know?
Speaker 5 (06:59):
And I think this is why, like.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
The baseline for quarterbacks generally, the number i've heard is
twenty five starts, Like the NFL wants twenty five starts,
because if you have twenty five starts, you'll have been
forced to grow through a lot of things.
Speaker 5 (07:14):
You'll, you know, be a first time starter.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
Then six or seven starts in like, defenses will start
to get a book on you. They'll start to figure
out what you're good at. They'll take that away. Now
all of a sudden, you've got a CounterPunch. You've got
to learn how to do things a little bit differently
than maybe you did the start over time you'll start
to build up a library you have different coverages and
different rush looks in your head and be able to
diagnose those and deal with them a little bit better.
(07:37):
And the pros will then have had a chance to
see like defenses throw different looks at you on a
continual basis.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
And so like, I think, like it was just I'm
gonna call it what.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
It was stupid that we were projecting him to go
first overall and we just didn't have the information. Again,
it never happened before, Like if his last name was
Smith because of his recruiting ranking, Texas fans would have
been really excited about him, But how many other fans
would have even heard of him, you know, let alone
you have all these people putting him first overall. So
I think the effect of that, Jmax, and is where
(08:11):
I'm going to swing it back, like bring it back around.
The effect of that is that everybody had their expectations
way up here and the reality was like they're just
like like he was. It cost him the chance to
kind of grow in silence and work through some things.
And you know, I went back and I looked at
(08:31):
cam Ward when he first made the move to to
to the FBS, coming from from Incarnate Word and going
to Washington State and he had a stretch in there
where he threw seven picks in four games.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
Do you think anybody even noticed that?
Speaker 4 (08:44):
You know, you know, like, so he was afforded the
chance to grow through that stuff. You know, nobody was
worried about him as an NFL draft prospect when he
first became a starter. And this is a guy who
had two years starting at a lower level under his belt,
a right, So you know, I think that's sort of
what this is cost starts Manning. It's like all the hype,
(09:06):
the nil money he took, so you know, like it's
not like he was turning down in il deals. But
the reason but I think the reason why Cooper Manning
raised his kid the way that he did and tried
to tamp down the hype as much as he possibly could,
was because he knew, like, if they build him up
to be this when you know, when he's only accomplished this, well,
(09:29):
then when he performs like this, it's going to feel
like he fell off of a cliff. And so I
think that's what it feels like to a lot of people,
because you built him up way up here, Now it
feels like because he's playing down here, like he fell
off this cliff when maybe it's really just start the
start of a process of growing for a really talented
kid who buy all accounts, has a really good head
on his shoulder.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Yeah, I totally agree. That's well said, obvious.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
You know, it should be.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Noted this is year three for him at Texas. It's
not like he's a freshman. But and Carson Beck is
a good game to remember Carson he went through this
a similar thing and then he ends up transferring. He
had the injury, and Carson Beck looks like the best
quarterback by the way, twenty twenty six quarterback class that
was so hyped. I mean, Cape Club Nick he's been bad,
(10:13):
multi year starter. Nuss Meyer's fallen off a little since
that opener. Now there's a report that he's maybe injured.
Seller's got knocked out with a concussion. Like, I don't
know that the quarterback class is great. Carson Beck does
look good. I would say he looks like the best
quarterback so far.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
I think we I think and again I think like
a lot of this like we have to let it
play out. Yeah, I think the other example you mentioned
the year three Jayden Daniels, Like if he had come
out of it out from Arizona State after three years
instead of transferring to LSU, like.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
He might have gone drafted. You know.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
So I think these things have evolved over time. And
like I said this coming in, like, I think there's
probably five or six guys that are draft eligible this
year that have a chance to ascend to that level.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
But it doesn't mean they're going to be up there
right away. Like we haven't talked about Drew Aller because
they haven't.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
Played anybody yet, right like, but eventually we're gonna be
taking it close to look at true Aller, who by whoo,
if you look at him, like has the physical traits
right like, he looks like he looks like a top
ten pick, you know what I mean. Like when you
just like look at who he is physically, you know,
nus Meyer is gonna have a chance to atone for
some of the earth, like to to work through the
injury and everything else. And you know, I like, like
(11:21):
club Nick, I think is somebody that you you you
look at and like, yes, that's been disappointed for the
first couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
We have to let this stuff play out, you.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Know, so.
Speaker 5 (11:31):
I don't think like.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
I think the way I described this class coming into
the year, I still feel this way was you have
five or six guys that have a chance, I think
to be in that top ten, top fifteen conversation, right,
But I don't think we came into this year with
like Caleb Williams and Drake May two years ago, where
Jade Daniels ascended to that level. We weren't talking about
(11:53):
him that way like before the season, like we knew
at the beginning of the year, Caleb Williams and Drake
May are gonna be very high draft. I didn't quite
feel that way about any of the guys going into
this year, but I thought a handful of them had
a chance to be on that level, which I think
is still where we're at.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in

Speaker 3 (12:22):
All right, let's pivot to the NFL.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Albert, and I'm assuming your tweet about the quarterbacks was
in reference to CJ.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Stroud, who you know again first year, No doubt.
Speaker 5 (12:33):
He was of them a few.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Okay, we'll start with Stroud.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
So he was awesome to you as a rookie, and
Bryce Young was so bad being number one that Stroud
looked even better maybe than he was. I still remember
his first game. I bet against him with Baltimore. He
was terrible against Baltimore in that opener.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Your two.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Some regression year three has started, and he looks like
ass he cannot complete anything on third down. He's like
terrible in the red zone. And I know new offensive line.
He's missing Christian kirk uh, he's missing his blocking tight end.
So there's no run game, and it just feels like
we're making a lot of excuses for CGS coordinator.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Coordinator.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
That's true, Listen, I'm not I'm just going off what
I've seen from two games. He's looked bad, but I
don't know. I'm not I'm not burying him and saying
he's terrible, but he has been terrible. Like I know,
it's a tough, difficult discussion.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Right so right, like, I mean, a rookie left tackle,
two rookie receivers that are playing, uh, you know, an
offensive line that is that is just I mean, was
a was a mess last year. And they're trying to
fix it. They felt like it was toxic in that
room last year. You know, I just think that there's
a lot that they've got.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
To work through early in the year, and like.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
I think the idea here is to put more on CJ.
Strouds shoulders. In other words, like last year, I know
he was frustrated by not having much control to change
things at the line of scrimmage and he wanted that.
So they go from you know, sort of the Shanahan system,
which is what Bobby Slowock brought, where the quarterback is
sort of one of eleven and and yes he's got
(14:10):
some power, but for the.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
Most part, in the like normal version.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Of that system, which you know has been adjusted for
guys like Stafford and Rogers over the years, the protection
calls are on the center.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
You have a pretty defined system of you see this,
it's this play, You see this, it's this play.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
And so he wanted more control at the line, and
he wanted to have a little bit more say because
he did at Ohio State. And so they bring in
a guy and Nick Kayley from the Rams, who had
some background in the Shanahan system having worked for McVeigh.
But Also, most of his background is in the Patriots system,
which you know gives the quarterback a ton of power.
That's the Tom Brady system, and so I think there's
(14:50):
a little bit of a.
Speaker 5 (14:50):
Process going on there. I believe CJ said something that
alluded to that today.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
So I think it's just like a lot of moving
parts right now. And I know it does and help
you do your show today. But I do think like
this is one of those where four weeks in, six
weeks in, it wouldn't surprise me if it clicks for him.
I think that's got a chance to be a really
good team with one with one caveat, the caveat being
the caveat being the offensive line needs to come along.
(15:17):
So Ersari, they're starting left tackles a rookie. They need
to figure they need they need a high level to
play from him at a very important position. They got
to figure out the interior as Patterson the guy at center.
Are they going to keep Titus Howard at right tackle?
Was he gonna move inside the guard? All of that
needs to work itself out too. So but if they
(15:37):
I think if they play really well in the offensive line,
they've got a defense that's that's championship caliber.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
And I think CJ can get back to what he
was as a rookie.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
But a lot of it depends if people want to
divorce the quarterback from his situation.
Speaker 5 (15:51):
You can't do that. His situation is not great right now.
It's what they expected.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
They the expectation, the way they built it was for
six weeks into the year. It's going to look a
lot better and we'll see if that happens or not.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
So Jalen Hurts has had like five offensive coordinators in
five years.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Not making excuses, But you said Bobby Slowick, and I
remember when he was the bell of the ball during Stroud.
Speaker 5 (16:10):
The same system. They were all what's that?
Speaker 3 (16:13):
I just looked up Shanahan.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Shanahan had Bobby Slowk in his system with the Niners, right,
and he was awesome play calling for Houston in year one.
Stroud rookie year year two, he's terrible all of a sudden,
and then he's fired. Do you even know Slowik right
now is the senior pass game coordinator the Miami What
that's quite a fall. First of all, what happened to
(16:35):
Stroud last year? Can we really blame it on the
offensive line.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
I think so like there are a few things I
would say things are toxic in the offensive line room,
which is why they trade Laramie Tonsil. And it wasn't
necessarily Laramie Tonsol was the problem. It was just that
as a captain, I don't know if they could count
on him as being part of the solution. So they
move him, which is a huge risk. It's a massive
risk to move your love task like that, but they
(16:58):
made that decision, you move your left tackle, and they
felt like the offense had it hadn't adjusted and changed
enough to where when you go into year two as
an offensive coordinator you have.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
To there there there has to be like a.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Level of of of change that comes with defenses catching
up to what you're doing. And there was a feeling
internally that that didn't happen enough, and I think Stroud
saw that and he became frustrated that he couldn't change
and adjust things on the fly to remedy that, which
I think led to more problems and ultimately the discussions
(17:38):
that ended with with with Bobby Slogg being out, which
is I know, it's like kind of like it jumps
out people, right, This guy who was interviewing for head
coaching jobs a year ago. But you know, getting your
quarterback position right is really, really, really important.
Speaker 5 (17:53):
And I think some of.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
The the situation there between between quarterback and coordinator preyed
a little bit too.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
My favorite game of the weekend is Eagles Rams. It's
weird the level. Yeah, everybody says the Eagles are amazing,
and you know, they've been good to me the first
two weeks betting Albert. They have the fewest plays over
fifteen yards in the league, you know, and I and
I get it, like, hey, we've got a system that works.
They also faced two pretty below average defenses in Dallas
(18:25):
and Kansas City. And yes, Kansas City defense is below average.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Kansas City is good. I would I would say Dallas
face value on Dallas.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
I mean justin Herbert rolled them up and down the field.
I saw some pressure.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
They can't get pressure with four They've got a blitz
and their back end is not good.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Bottom line is I think the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
I don't want to say overvalue, but I think I
like the Rams getting three and a half this week.
I know the Witherspoon loss is big. I'm just curious
how you see that matchup unfolding Rams Eagles.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
Well, they went back, they went in there, they went
in there and almost beat them in January. Yeah, and
really we're a player two away from being them in
a snowstorm, which is Philly's environment.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
But I think they went so far and murdered the Rams, right,
didn't take one rush for like people, right, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
I mean I think like this one really comes down
to that Rams defensive front and the job that they
do to get the Eagles in obvious passing situations and
then rush Jalen Hurts And you know, I think that's
easier said than done. But I think we saw it
at the end of the Kansas City game. I mean,
(19:30):
like the Eagles offensive line, for all the warts on
offense right now, the Eagles offensive line still turned out
that first down when everybody in the building knew it
was coming, right, Like, with about seven minutes left in
the game, they go Barkley, Barkley, then Tushbush first down.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
That tears another two minutes off the clock.
Speaker 4 (19:49):
And then after Kansas City came back and scored, the
Chiefs were that the Chiefs were so concerned with that
happening again, but they tried the on side kick when
they could have kicked it away there because they knew
what could happen. And then that was justified by the
Eagles being able to do the same thing once again.
And so like I would pay less attention to the
score in the yardage here, what I pay attention to
(20:09):
with the Eagles right now and the way that they're
playing is the game control. And it never felt like
that game was in the Chiefs control. It felt like
the Chiefs were chasing the whole time. And the Rams
have to create a situation where they sees control of
the game, and that might be by putting an early
score on the board. It certainly I think has to
(20:30):
be by slowing down the running game. But the strength
of that Rams team really is in its defensive front,
and so you know, you talk about Watherspoon and the
injury and everything else, their corner situation isn't great with
the Rams, but that's sort of a conscious decision they've
made and where they're making their investments and investing in
players up front, and so playing against one of the
(20:51):
best offensive lines in football, probably the best offensive line
in football, I think the key here is get them
in obvious passing situations then you can dial it up,
and then you can make Jalen Hursts a little less comfortable.
If they're constantly in you know, second and six and
third and three.
Speaker 5 (21:08):
I think it could be a long day for the Rams.
So that's me will be the key.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Is there any game that jumps out at you this weekend?
And listen, I there's some time which one oh line?
Speaker 5 (21:20):
Did you see?
Speaker 2 (21:20):
That line was six? The Ravens were favored by six,
and it's down to like four and a half or four.
I don't know why what people are saying. I mean,
it's like, come on, it's one game against the sad
Sack Bears.
Speaker 5 (21:32):
I don't try that as closely as you do, but
I thought it was interesting.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
I talked to Jamayor Gibbs about this, you know, after
they beat the brakes off the Bears, and he said
to me, I asked him, like, what the problem was
in Green Bay?
Speaker 5 (21:44):
And I thought that was an interesting answer. He said
it was communication.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
He said that we had a really hard time, and
if you think about it, that actually makes some sense.
So the Packers come in and the Lions have zero
idea like how Micah Parsons is going to affect that
game right.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
And you know, if you look at the three.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
Main communicators on game day on the field, who are they, right?
J Mack is the center of the quarterback and the coordinator. Well,
two of those three pieces from last year are gone
for the Lions. So I think part of this was
them working through that stuff and fine and and okay,
like now we had the gaming us a really good
(22:22):
defense where it didn't look right. How can we go
in and address that. They had a chance to sort
that stuff iron it out at home. Now they go
back on the road and we'll see what it looks
like again. But I mean, I think it's kind of funny.
I think the Lions had like a little bit of
a hair across the rast and the whole Ben Johnson
conversation too.
Speaker 5 (22:40):
It was like they're going up against Ben. They're going
up against Ben.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
And the conversation coming out of the first game was
they miss Ben. And I think there are a lot
of prideful guys in that huddle, guys like Taylor Decker
and Piney Sewell and Amen Ross Saint Brown and Jamison
Williams and Sam Laporta and Jamira Gibbs and jay A
GoF that are basically saying, like, Okay, so you think
it was all the coaching, You don't think we've got
(23:06):
a really loaded offensive group.
Speaker 5 (23:09):
And I think that's the case. Like I think that
the talent is still really, really good there.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Ben deserves all the credit he got for being as
creative as he was the last couple of years.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
But that's still a damn good offense.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
And it'll be interesting to see if the Ravens make
the Lions look more like they made the Browns look
last week, or if it looks.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
More like the Buffalo game of two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Yeah, well, the Josh Allen scrambling is removed because Jared
Goff ain't going anywhere.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
And I don't know, I just I.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
Can't, but remember Josh Allen beat him from the pocket
at the end of the game.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
Well, when they were coming back, but the threat to
run I think kind of made them think. Like I
just remember the last time the Lions went there, the
lines were five and one and it was thirty five
nothing in the third quarter, and I mean it was
just an absolute ass kicking outdoors. You're not on the
fast surface. I don't I just I feel like the
Lions they're not. What are the Lions closer to the
(24:01):
Bears result or the Packers result?
Speaker 5 (24:05):
I mean that depends on what you think of the
Bears and Packers.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
Right, do you view the disparity of the Bears and
Packers is that wide?
Speaker 5 (24:14):
If it is that wide?
Speaker 4 (24:16):
And I think the Packers have looked like I mean
like you don't think I'm talking out of school to
say like Packers look like one of the two or
three best teams in football?
Speaker 5 (24:23):
Right? Yeah? Okay, So where are the Bears.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
They're not there. They're probably in the twenty two to
twenty eight range, right, all right, So if.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
That's the case, then I mean maybe the two results
sort of match up. You know, I think the Lions
are still really I think the lines are still a
playoff team. I would not look at them and say
there's no way they make it. Here's why, because they
do lose Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn and that's a
Those are big losses, there's no question about it.
Speaker 5 (24:57):
But remember what they did last year, Right.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
So last year they went fifteen to two despite losing
what three or four or five of their.
Speaker 5 (25:07):
Best defensive players.
Speaker 4 (25:09):
They had no Aden Hutchinson at the end, they had
Noah Lee McNeil at the end, you know, they were
taping it together. At linebacker, Angeloni got hurt like Campbell
had been hurt. Like they had a historic amount of
injuries last year on the defensive side of the ball.
And so in one way, yeah, they lose something from
(25:30):
that fifteen to win team. But in another way, if
they can just manage to stay a little bit healthier,
the talent should be better than what they were putting
on the field last year, right, And that's notwithstanding the
loss of Frank rag Now, so I still think the
Lions are Now I think I win fifteen games again, No,
I don't think so. But could I see them winning
eleven or twelve? Yeah, I could definitely see them winning
(25:51):
eleven or twelve.
Speaker 3 (25:52):
Wow, Bullets.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Now the offensive line remains really really I mean, Taylor Decker,
I don't know if he's gonna play.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
He missed last week. It didn't matter.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
But the home rule, that's a big question, right because
and I think that's the big question to me, Like
that was the biggest thing coming out of that Packer
game that I was worried about, was like the offensive
line did kind of get its ass kicked in that
Packer game. So so much of like the personality of
that team since Dan Campbell's got there has been through
this just dominating offensive line, right, so is the offensive
(26:24):
line by the end of the year with Graham Glasgow
playing center and Tate Ratleige in there at guard, and
you know as a rookie does he wind up eventually
moving from guard over to center?
Speaker 5 (26:33):
Like how all that stuff works out?
Speaker 4 (26:35):
I think goes a long way to where we set
their ceiling for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
We could wrap up just brief well, I got two more.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
Sorry briefly.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
I got to give Daniel Jones some props. I did
not see this coming. Yeah, he's been excellent, Saint Stichen.
You have to wonder what Anthony Richardson's is going through
his head right now.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
Is he like, get me out of here.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
I couldn't do anything, and Daniel Jones is out here
looking like Joe Montana. I think they got lucky to
be the Broncos. So I'm tempering expectations.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
I actually mean it was a weird penalty at the end, for.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
Sure, bullshit penalty, man, let's call it what it was.
I actually think the Titans are very live to win outright. Now,
this is the first time the culture leaving the Dome.
The Titans went from facing arguably two of the top
five defenses.
Speaker 5 (27:18):
In the league.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Right, the Rams are excellent, maybe top seven. Rams are excellent.
Obviously in the Broncos at home are a truck. I
think the Titans can win this out right. What do
you think about the Titans?
Speaker 5 (27:30):
I think colt go win the game. Like, I think
the Titans are going to be better at the end
of the year.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
I think what's coming here is I think the comparison
is probably Seattle when Pete Carroll and John Schneider first
got there in twenty ten, where the depth is so
shaky that they're going to be constantly turning the roster
and like, I mean, you're going to see over one
hundred players go through that place over the course of
the season. You know. I just think there's gonna be
(27:57):
a constant turn of guys in and out and everything else.
And I think that's going to continue, and know, you
hope you find the right mix coming out of the year.
I think cam Ward's actually acquitted himself pretty well. Yeah,
through two weeks, despite the fact that the offense hasn't
played great. They don't have a lot around him.
Speaker 5 (28:12):
I think the Colts are so interesting. Man.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
Like when I was there, like a couple of guys
gave me this stat which I thought was fascinating, which was,
like last year they were twenty ninth in the NFL
in total defense and thirtieth in giveaways and they still.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
Won eight games.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
And if you really think about that, it's like, okay,
Like they bring in Luay and Aroumo from Cincinnati to
fix the defense, and the feeling was as far as
the giveaway thing, we feel like we are good enough
around the quarterback to win. We just need a quarterback
who can come in here and put his hands at
ten to two and run the offense.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
And that's what.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
Anthony Richardson wasn't giving them. And essentially that was a
bet that Alec Pierce, that Michael Pittman, that Josh Downs,
that you know, Tyler Warren coming in as a rookie,
Jonathan Taylor. It was that those those guys are good
enough that they just needed somebody to come in and
run the offense at a competent level, and all of
a sudden we would get a completely different picture.
Speaker 5 (29:09):
And through two weeks. That's what it looks like. Now.
Speaker 4 (29:11):
The warning is what happened with the Saints last year, right, Yes,
the Saints had a couple of changes and it looked
awesome through two weeks, and then you know, within a month,
maybe a little more than a month, the head coach
is being fired.
Speaker 5 (29:25):
You know. So, like I I'm not saying like that.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
Yeah, the Daniel Jones Colts offense that we've gotten over
the first two weeks is absolutely what we're going to
see for the next three and a half months. But
it does look like the bet that they made, which
was we're good enough around the quarterback, we just need
the quarterback to come in and run the offense the
way we wanted to run the offense, actually looks like
it's paying off.
Speaker 5 (29:47):
Yeah. Final one.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
If I told you to name the top four teams
in the league through two weeks, it's early. Is it
pretty clear? In whatever order? It's Packers, Eagles, Bill's Ravens.
Who would be fifth through two weeks?
Speaker 4 (30:03):
And I obviously if you pack I mean I might
put the Rams fifth. Okay, I say that because but
they haven't proven.
Speaker 5 (30:10):
It yet, you know what I mean? Like, yeah, there, I.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
Mean it's that that's a little hard. They beat the Texans.
I think that's a good win.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
That was at home and they beat the Titans, which
doesn't show you a ton.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
Well, okay, let me let me sorry for the AFC.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
It feels like there's Bill's Ravens and then a drop
off an I Chargers. I was okay, I was gonna
go there like they're better than the Chiefs right now,
right it's early.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
I know Xavier Worthy is going to freaking.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
Save the day.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
So I would say with the Chiefs rookie left tackle,
I would say Xavier Worthy is hurt.
Speaker 5 (30:43):
Rashie Rice is back after.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
Week six, which I think takes a ton of pressure
off Travis Kelcey, and they can use Travis Kelcey differently.
Speaker 5 (30:50):
So I think the Chiefs, if.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
You're the Chiefs, you're sort of treading water figuring out
what the rest of the guys can do until you
get back to full strength. I the Chargers, man, I
hated it for them that they a lost for Sean
Slater because when I went to the camp, like you're
down the street, you can go down and see this. Yeah,
the sot the physical size of the team really jumped
(31:14):
out at me a train camp. A Holy crap, this
is like a this is a Jim Harbaugh team, you
know what I mean? So I think you have that,
Like it looks like a team that is going to
be able to come out and really lean on teams
and get stronger as the year goes on, as you know,
the season starts to set into guy's legs a little bit.
Like I think they're a team that can kind of
push other teams around. And I love the way that
(31:37):
Justin Herbert's played so far, and it was interesting. I
had this conversation with Greg Roman when he got back
from Brazil, their offensive coordinator.
Speaker 5 (31:44):
Oh yeah, and he.
Speaker 4 (31:45):
Said to me, he said, like, the big thing he
flew up to Oregon this summer and he said, the
big thing that he did that they wanted to impress
on Justin Herbert was it's okay to run, which I
thought was interesting, right, And he brought him a bunch
of cutups of Mahomes and Allen and the whole thing
was how backbreaking it is for a defense when they
do everything right and all of a sudden you have
(32:05):
this big athletic guy running through the secondary, you know
what I mean, Like you cover it right, your rush
is good, and all of a sudden he just sneaks
out and uh and then picks up seven or eight
yards and now all of a sudden, it's first down again.
Speaker 5 (32:18):
And they, like Roman said to.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Me, he had a Justin had a really good year
last year, but because of the planner fascy iis to
cost him all of training camp because of the ankle,
they weren't able to install as much of the offense
last year, and he wasn't able to be as much
of an athlete. And they feel like now they're at
a point where you're going to get the full version
of Justin Herbert.
Speaker 5 (32:38):
And I mean, it.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
Looks really good through two weeks, right, so you know
this Slater injury was a big one. Khalil Macktt. Looks
like they dodged a bullet there had long, yeah, for
a little bit.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
But not as long as it might have looked.
Speaker 4 (32:50):
It looks to me like it was bad I happened,
so like, I mean, we'll see, we'll see. But I
do think it's I think he talks here in a
little bit, right, like I'm sure about that, but I
do I do think it's something where they're going to
have him back at some point, And like, I look
at it like this is a I mean, it's you've
(33:11):
watched these teams enough, Like it looks like Stanford, looks
like the Niners, it looks like Michigan, you know what
I mean.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
Like it's that sort of team again.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
And so I wouldn't bet against Jim Harbaugh having a
real chance to win that division. So maybe they're the
third team in the AFC after Buffalo and Baltimore. Again
like Houston and Kansas City. I think LINGA is talented
teams that have a chance to send to that. Cincinnati
obviously has the injury now, and the AFC already looks
a little bit differently than They're different than we thought
(33:38):
it would a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
Yeah, by the way, does Harball ever give you shit
about being an Ohio State guy?
Speaker 3 (33:43):
Or have you guys not discussed that?
Speaker 5 (33:46):
He and I have had some talks about it. I
I respect his work. I'll put it out.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
Oh wow, Okay, I love it.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
Albert brier Hey, he gave us the little piece of
motivation we needed to put it over the top last year.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
Right.
Speaker 5 (33:59):
No, I liked Jim. I actually really appreciate Jim. He's
an interesting character for sure.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
Yeah, Albert Breard one of the best of the business.
Keep up the good work, buddy, and we'll talk to
you soon.
Speaker 5 (34:10):
Thanks, Jam, I appreciate it.
