Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up Straight Fire?

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Baam, It's me Jason McIntyre, Straight Fire for Wednesday Tip
Tip and Way Fourth. Changing up the pot a little
bit today. Just we've got on NFL heavy and honestly,
I need a little reboot, a reset, if you will,
after just getting my teeth kicked in. So we're doing
a heavy on the college football, especially with the college

(00:35):
football weekend ahead. Gosh, guys, there's like five amazing matchups,
led of course by Oregon visiting Happy Valley for a
white out at Penn State. You get Alabama, Clemson, I'm sorry, Alabama, Georgia,
Clemson has a big game again because they're all big
for Dabbo. But I did want to bring in Dan Wilkin.
He recently moved from USA Today to Yahoo. He's got
some interesting stuff, some interesting takes. Sounds like Notre Dame

(00:57):
could be in in for a coaching change. Obviously not
Marcus Freeman, but I would you know, if you're watching
the Iris closely, you know their defensive coordinator may be
looking for work soon. But besides that, like I gotta
be honest, it's great stuff, great intel, some actionable gambling Info.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I'm reluctant to get on.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
The ducks, but I just can't quit Dan Land him
and that guy is so good. Anyways, without further ado,
here's Dan Wilkin Y'ahoo sports.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live. You know a guy, Jason likes to think
he knows everything when it comes to sports.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
I know what sports fans want.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
But for everything he doesn't, he knows the guy who does.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Let's just say, I know a guy who knows the
guy who knows another guy.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
All right, let's welcome back to straight fire. I guess
you know. But he's got a new address.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Dan Wolkin used to be USA Today he's moved to
Yahoo Sports, one of the seismic.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
College football media moves over the summer. Dan, how you doing, man?

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Hey, I'm great.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah, I mean Yahoo is I mean it's an interesting outlet. Obviously,
Dan Wetzel had been there, and WOJ and I knew
a lot of guys had been there. There's been a
lot of change. What prompted the move for you yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:21):
You know, really just Yahoo reached out to me this summer. Obviously,
Wetzel went to ESPN earlier in the year and that
created an opening and they were trying to figure out
what they wanted to do, and you know, I was interested.
I'd been at USA Today for a long time, almost
thirteen years, wow. And you know, so after that long

(02:45):
you are kind of comfortable, but you're also.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Like, am I too comfortable? Do I? You know, should
I go look at something else?

Speaker 5 (02:52):
But obviously, when you're in USA today, there's not a
lot of you know, comparable outlets anymore, just in terms
of the platform, in the scope of it. So I
was super interested. I've known all those guys you mentioned
who've been at Yahoo over the years, friends of mine.
They spoke very highly of their experience. Ross Dollinger I've
known for a long time, and he liked it there,

(03:15):
and so the opportunity to work with him, and he's
I think the top news breaker in college football right now,
and so we kind of work well off each other,
and I was super excited to get the opportunity because
I think it's a really good place.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
A good platform.

Speaker 5 (03:30):
It's a good fit for me. Culturally, and I think
we're going to do a lot of good stuff.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, it seems like college football is a huge focus
of theirs and this weekend we wanted to have you
on obviously because you're plugged in. But this weekend there's
so many great games. But I do want to start
with the big news. Mike Gundy ousted at Oklahoma State.
I guess it had been trending this way for a while,
but I was still surprised to see it happen in September.

(03:55):
He's kind of a combatant individual. I don't know what
your relationship is with him, what we were in thoughts,
and what do you think they do moving forward?

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Like is this a good job?

Speaker 4 (04:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (04:04):
So I guess I'll just start with the timing, and
as we're recording it, have not heard yet from Mike.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Or really the school.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
I think they're having a press conference today, and I'll
be interested to know kind of what transpired between Saturday
and Tuesday, because they lose to Tulsa Friday night, and
I think at that point it was just clear that
it was done and there was really no coming back
from that, And of course, with him being there twenty
years and being just really a program legend.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
How do you handle that? It's tricky.

Speaker 5 (04:38):
He did a press conference on Monday saying he intended
to coach out the rest of his contract. So what
happened that they sent him out to do that press
conference Monday and then fire him on Tuesday. That'll be
interesting to get more intel on that. As far as
Gundy himself, he's had certainly a lot of viral moments,
good bad, whatever, always interest, always good content. And I

(05:03):
think the underplayed part of it is he was a
great coach for a very long time. He did more
at Oklahoma State to make them nationally relevant over a
very long stretch.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Then.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
I don't think anybody in the country could have could
have done it because anybody else would have left. He
stayed because he's an Oklahoma State guy. And it'll be
interesting to see what they do. I think it's a
different job now. It's a tougher job in some ways.
For one thing, T Boon Pickens isn't alive anymore.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
He was.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
He was kind of the sugar daddy of that whole
athletic department. They're in the Big twelve. Oklahoma's gone and
left for the SEC. So financially they're just kind of
not in the same place. They can compete in the
Big twelve for sure, Nationally, can they compete with the
best programs in the Big ten and SEC?

Speaker 4 (05:56):
I think it's I think it's a tough ass.

Speaker 5 (05:58):
But yeah, whenever you're hiring a coach someplace for the
first time in twenty years, it's going to be interesting.
The other factor here, I think they're ads on thin
Ice Chad Wyberg. So we'll see how that all shakes out.
But there's gonna be a lot of questions asked about
Oklahoma State.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
Yeah, is this even like a good job or is
this a stepping stone to a.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Big ten SEC job?

Speaker 3 (06:19):
And I don't want to sound like elitists, but it
seems like the only way to be relevant right now
is be in the SEC or Big ten.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (06:27):
I think we may be seeing that trend a little
bit in all of.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
These ACC and Big twelve jobs.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
Maybe not quite all of them, because there's probably still
a few, you know, a Florida State, a Clemson, that
kind of thing. But yeah, like for the most part,
coaches are gonna want to be in the SEC, in
the Big ten. Now, we'll see how this looks when
the College Football Playoff is a twelve team or a
sixteen team entity.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
However that works. We'll see what that does for those schools.

Speaker 5 (06:58):
You know, there's certainly a world where it's just easier
to get in the playoff from those leagues, and maybe.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
That's more attractive. I just don't think we haven'tough data
on that yet.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
That's fair.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
You mentioned the ACC so why don't we dive into it?
Dabo Sweeney is.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
He hun thin? Ice? I know the buy out.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
I think I saw numbers like sixty million or whatever.
But he feels like he's headed toward Mike gundy Land.
I mean, they got a loaded team. We had multiple
guys come on here this summer and gas up this
Clemson team. Oh they're gonna have like five guys drafted
in the top sixty club Nick is awesome.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
They're garbages here.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
I mean, I don't mean to take a dump on Clemson,
but Dad, they've been terrible.

Speaker 5 (07:37):
Yeah, nobody really can quite put their finger on why.
I have my own theories, which I think is a
little bit of just staleness overall in the program, and
that's parts of the top two with Dabo. Offensively, I
think what they've done is very questionable with Garrett Riley.

(07:59):
But are we seeing Garrett Riley's offense or are we
seeing the Dabo offense the Clemson offense through Garrett Riley's lens.
I think that's a huge question, a huge problem in
something they need to figure out. I think that the
lost to Syracuse was kind of stunning enough that it
may shake some some things in Dabbo to make him

(08:21):
finally realize, hey, I can't be this defiant. I won
two championships ten years ago. Guy, he's got to own this.
He's got to figure it out. They're not gonna fire him,
and I don't.

Speaker 4 (08:33):
Think he's gonna leave.

Speaker 5 (08:34):
He gets in his feelings and blows hot air about
you know, hey, if they don't want me here, I'll
go somewhere else.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
But I just don't think that's realistic. I think he's
got to fix it, and I think the next couple
three years we'll see if he can, or you know,
he may be.

Speaker 5 (08:50):
Just having to walk away. Well, we'll see how it goes.
But they're definitely, uh, they've definitely got a lot.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
To figure out. Because that you're right, they are bad.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
I mean time Dan when he was dominating, and he
had Trevor Lawrence where he was like the air apparent
at Alabama because I think he was like a walk
on receiver there or something.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Yeah, he played there.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
That's out the window, right, there's no shot at that.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
Yeah, I mean, I don't want to ever say never.
We'll see what happens with Alabama this season, and I'm
sure we'll talk about the game they've got coming up
this weekend. But yeah, there's a scenario I'm not saying
it's likely, but certainly possible where Kaylen de Bor just gets.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Up in leaves whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa whoa?

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Hold on? What do he gets up?

Speaker 3 (09:32):
At least he doesn't want to do with the message
board lunatics and the social media whack jobs.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Well let me just throw this out there for you.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
UCLA has got an opening. He's worked it on the
West coast, Fresno State, Washington. What if u CLA said, hey, listen, man,
do you really like Alabama? We can pay you, you know,
nine to ten million a year to be out of here.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Wait can they afford that?

Speaker 4 (09:54):
I've been told yes, yeah, I've been told.

Speaker 5 (09:56):
I've been told that they they have at least put
out feelers to people in that price range.

Speaker 4 (10:04):
We'll see where that goes. I think there's a long
time before we're gonna know.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
Exactly where UCLA fits in the pecking order, and there's
gonna be a lot more jobs open. I'm just throwing
out a scenario like Kaylin de Borr, there's a safe
landing spot for him, like at UCLA Alabama opens. I mean,
I don't think it would be a good idea for
Dabbo to go there because I think if he is
this thin skinned, insensitive about the criticism he's getting at Clemson,

(10:32):
I'm not sure that he would wear that any better
at Alabama.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
Probably a whole lot worse because it's ten times more intense.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
But yeah, like I just I don't think he could
go back to Alabama. I mean maybe, maybe, maybe, but
I don't like that idea.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
I mean, if they were dominating and he was doing
a great job, sure, But I mean we're gonna be
looking at this Clemson roster come draft time and be like,
why didn't they win more?

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Because they do have a lot of dudes.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
Well, but but what they don't have is, you know,
they don't have the elite quarterback like you mentioned.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
We'll hold on and everybody saying he was elite.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
I know, but he hasn't taken that step. And then
they don't have an elite running back. I mean, think
about the teams they had with Travis Etn and you know,
they don't have a guy like that. They they started
in the season opener, converted wide receiver to play running back.
So they I think they are a little down talent wise.
I think maybe their talent was a little bit overrated.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
So why is that?

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Why are they down talent wise because they don't want
to spend an nil or what?

Speaker 1 (11:38):
No?

Speaker 5 (11:38):
I mean, I think they're I think they're competitive there,
I think, but Dabbo and that staff, or at least
the staff he had in place when they were winning championships, they.

Speaker 4 (11:48):
Really evaluated well. I mean there were guys.

Speaker 5 (11:50):
Yeah, they had some big time five star talent, but
they didn't have as many as the Alabamas. They did
develop some three and four stars into five and that's
how they got to that level, and I don't think
they're doing that as much now.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
Interesting, all right, and let's be pivot to Saturday. Lsu
at ole Miss. I'm surprised Ole Miss is favored now,
Brian speaking of combative with the media, Brian Kelly, I mean,
one of my favorite press conferences of twenty twenty five
so far. Just got so upset after the Florida game.
I will say this, Nuss Meyer, who was supposed to
be like a great prospect, he looked good against Clemson.

(12:24):
I haven't seen it since I've been reading all He's
got nagging injuries. If Kelly loses this game again, they're
fourth in the country and underdogs here on the road.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
I don't know what's your read on it.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
Well, I thought you were going to ask me about
the real important story from this game, which is that
Lane Kiffin's daughter is dating with Weeks, the linebacker at LSU.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Really, I was unaware of that. Lane Kiffin's daughter who
goes to USC.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
I don't know where she goes. I think she might
go to Ole miss Uh.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
He's got multiple kids because he his family is in
my area where I live out here, and his daughter
was like a big deal, you know, and yeah.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
Landry Landry Kiffin, so so they they hard launched, you know,
the relationship Instagram official as as the kids say, uh
yesterday on game week, which which smells a lot like
mining games to me. I mean, and I'm sure it's
Kiffin Lane, Kiffin pulling the strings off. I mean, it's
got to be right, rob get in the head, get

(13:22):
in the head, a little bit of of of the
people down down to the Bayou. But yeah, uh no,
all kidding aside, it's it's an interesting game. You know,
everyone kind of went hard on the LSU bandwagon after
they beat Clemson in the opener.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
Does that win really mean as much?

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Now?

Speaker 4 (13:41):
I don't think so.

Speaker 5 (13:43):
Their offense is a little sticky, not not sure how
good they are. But at the same time, they're playing
a defense in Ole, miss that has not performed all
that well.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
Did play well against Tulane last week. But you know,
let's get serious, it's tu Lane. I think it's a
good test.

Speaker 5 (13:59):
It's a good test for both teams. You know, I
would lean toward LSU, but I'm certainly not discounting Kiffen
and their ability to win that that one.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Ohio State travels to Husky Stadium. They are Washington's undefeated.
I didn't even realize that Ohio State eight and a
half point favorite. First real test for the young quarterback
at Ohio State, you know, against the Texas team at home,
it was very safe going on the road.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Is this dangerous for the buckeyer?

Speaker 4 (14:42):
No, yeah, I think it could be.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
We learned a few things about Ohio State and that opener,
but it's an opener, and I you know, they're probably
a little bit different just in terms of the development process.
Three weeks is a long time in a college football season,
and they haven't really done anything of no since then.
I mean they've they've kind of been off the radar,

(15:08):
and so now you have to.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Kind of gear it back up. It's a long flight,
long trip.

Speaker 5 (15:14):
We'll see how they handle it. I really don't have
much of a read on Washington at this stage. They
were very impressive against Wazoo last weekend. They should be
better than they were last year, for sure. I just
I just don't have a lot of context for them,
and so this will be that game where we, I think,
learn how good Washington might be with Jetfish in year two.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
In a game where I'm as the kids like to say,
low key nervous. Notre Dame goes to Arkansas, number keeps
going down. Notre Dame three and a half Arkansas. I
like their quarterback. He's got some meat Kaepernick in him.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
I don't know. And Notre Dame's.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
Secondary is awful, and I see two guys are two
starters are questionable. I don't know going on the road.
They're lucky this is a noon kickoff and not at
night in Fayetteville. If the Irish lose, this is kind
of the bloom off the Marcus Freeman.

Speaker 5 (16:04):
Rose Well, I don't know about that, but I do
think that if they lose, I think a lot of
fingers get pointed toward Chris ash the defensive coordinator.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
Their defense has not been very good this year. Arkansas
hasn't either.

Speaker 5 (16:21):
There's gonna be a lot of points scored in that game,
at least on paper there should be.

Speaker 4 (16:26):
But I think that's the disappointment.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
You started to hear some questions this week about is
Marcus Freeman going to have to get more involved in
the coaching of the defense, that kind of thing. Look,
he got into the championship game last year. I think
people love the guy, I don't think because they're off
to a rough start.

Speaker 4 (16:45):
They've lost two games by four points, so I wouldn't
be too panicky about it. But the defense is definitely
a problem.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
All Right, the two big games, Let's start with Georgia Alabama.
It's in Georgia. The spread is small, but I don't know.
I'm nervous for Alabama and Kaylen Doors, especially with what
you said about the potential.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
For the u c l A job. I don't just
don't know if George is that good though. Dat Yeah,
don't let me.

Speaker 5 (17:17):
Let me just be clear, I am not sourcing that.
I'm just sort of throwing that out as a as
a as a theory, as a possibility because it's real, Like, yeah,
Klen de bor is off to a rough start. Now
if they if they win this weekend, that narrative will change.
And maybe Alabama just is the team that people thought
it was gonna be and they just had a bad

(17:38):
week one against Florida State.

Speaker 4 (17:40):
Time will tell.

Speaker 5 (17:41):
The interesting part of this is Kirby Smart has an incredible,
almost spotless record against everybody else, but he's like one
to nine against Alabama, wow, or one and eight something
something like that. It's it's crazy bad how Georgia has
played across a number of years against Alabama and and
now not just Nick Saban.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
They lost last year to the debor team.

Speaker 5 (18:06):
So that's interesting my people at Georgia. The narrative that
I'm getting is that the secondary is.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
Really not good.

Speaker 5 (18:19):
They're just not playing as well defensively as as people thought.
Some would say now that nil and everybody can pay players,
you know, Georgia is not as stacked as they once were.
They don't have that same depth of talent. I think
there's something to that. Yeah, we're gonna find out a

(18:39):
lot about them. It's a night game, it's in Athens.
It'll be a crazy crowd.

Speaker 4 (18:44):
Historically, it's the kind of setup that Georgia.

Speaker 5 (18:46):
Fans would have like feared and been really scared about
because they just always lost that game, especially to Alabama.
Now there is I think a lot more overall confidence.

Speaker 4 (18:57):
But we got to find out.

Speaker 5 (19:00):
I mean, they they you know, they won that game
at Tennessee, but it was kind of a miracle.

Speaker 4 (19:06):
And yeah, this is a it's I'm fascinated.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
Yeah, is that the game you're gonna be at or
are you gonna be there? Yeah State. Oh you're going Alabit.
Oh that's right, you're at Atlanta, guy.

Speaker 5 (19:15):
I live in Atlanta, so easy drive for me. And
then my colleague Ross is going to go up to
Penn State. He lives in DC, so it's an easy
trip for him, well for both of us.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
So the Oregon Penn State game, it's funny we talked
about quarterbacks kind of struggling. All these guys Arch Banning
who were not I don't even think we need to
talk about He's just not good right now. Yeah, and
then you talk about club Nick struggling, nus Meyer. Dante
Moores kind of showed out. I remember watching him at
UCLA and he was just a run around guy. He
looks much more refined. But Oregon hasn't really played anyone.

(19:46):
Sorry Oklahoma State fans.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
I am curious. This is a tough spot for the
young kid.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
Well young I think he's like twenty one going to
a white out at Penn State at night and trying
to deliver pretty fascinating matchup. But do you want to
start with the Oregon or James Franklin choking and all
these big kids.

Speaker 5 (20:02):
Well, I'll pick up on your point about more. He
was extremely well regarded coming out of high school.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
You know, everybody wanted him.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
I mean he was the you know, the five star
of five stars, and you know, made the mistake in
retrospect of going out to UCLA and playing for a
Chip Kelly who was completely checked out and who was
incredibly lazy as a recruiter and had no help.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
You know, for him, it was just a bad deal,
a bad situation.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
He leaves, he has the benefit of going to Oregon,
where you know, he knew he wasn't going to play
last year. I think that was probably a very mature
decision by the young man too, you know, to understand
that situation and say, look, I can take a year
and learn.

Speaker 4 (20:53):
And he did that, and I think he's better for it.
We'll see what happens in this road test. Pence date.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
I would say, just.

Speaker 5 (21:03):
In terms of the eye test has maybe been slightly disappointing,
interesting at least in terms of what I expected. You know,
I just expected I expected their offense to function at
a higher level than it has you know thus far.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
That doesn't mean, that doesn't mean.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
It won't Dan forty six eleven thirty four six. Now
they they've played basically the Sisters of the Blind.

Speaker 5 (21:27):
So far, there's been a lot of garbage time points
there where where you know, I I know, I understand
the numbers, but I'm just saying that's why I said,
eye Test.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
This is why we bring you on because I test.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
Eye Test has been just okay.

Speaker 5 (21:43):
So again, how do you gauge that when when the
team doesn't have to play well to win, We'll see
they will have to play.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
Well against Oregon. I mean, I'm just to the.

Speaker 5 (21:52):
Point with Oregon, with Dan Lanning that, like, I'm just
always gonna think they're good. They have incredible talent, they
have been, you know, awesome in it, and Landing is
a kick ass football coach, like he just is. I
have some issues with some of his gambles and game
management stuff, but in terms of preparing and motivating, he's
top tier. So they're gonna be ready to play and
I'm sure they're going to be good.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
You think they could pull the upset here?

Speaker 3 (22:14):
I mean, well, I can will put you on the spot.
Would you take him here? I mean the lines up,
you know what I'm going to I'm gonna take Oregon
in this game. I think Oregon went straight up coaching
mismatch just huge. I'm sorry, James Fans, I'm sorry, but
in these big games against top ten teams, the numbers
don't lie. He's I don't know if he's like one
in seventeen or something crazy, but it's not great.

Speaker 5 (22:37):
There's all kinds of things we could talk about there.
You know, he gets real weird. It's a game management issue.
He gets really weird.

Speaker 4 (22:45):
I mean, what some of the stuff he did in that.

Speaker 5 (22:51):
Quarter far the semi final game last year against Notre
Dame was bananas, just absolutely bananas.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
I don't know what what it is. I really don't know, Like.

Speaker 5 (23:02):
If he just has this sort of like weird philosophical
thing that he can't shake loose of, or if he
just kind of goes in and it's all feel what
does he really believe in as a coach when it.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
Comes to some of these decisions. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (23:18):
I really don't know. I don't mean, I mean, he's
not a bad coach. You don't win as much as
he's won if you're a bad coach. But when but
you know, every game is going to come down to
three or four play calls, you know, and he just makes.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
A lot of the wrong ones.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
Okay, so this is the these are the numbers.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
So James Franklin against top five teams, now, I think
this is all of his head coaching spots.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
One in eighteen against top five teams.

Speaker 3 (23:43):
Now it's not just Penn State, it's the previous stop
as well, four and twenty five against top ten teams.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
So historically when.

Speaker 3 (23:50):
He has to step up in class, he just has
it delivered. Now he's got he's got good players. Who
has a better roster?

Speaker 2 (23:54):
You think Oregon or Penn State?

Speaker 5 (23:57):
I would say overall, maybe the Oregon has more talent, Okay,
but you know, at Penn State, I mean they've really
developed guys. I mean they have guys who've been in
the program for a long time, and they have a
good mix of talent and experience at Penn State. But
I would just say raw talent, Like who's gonna have

(24:19):
more dudes in the NFL?

Speaker 4 (24:22):
Probably Oregon.

Speaker 2 (24:24):
Interesting.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
I Actually we can wrap up with some breaking news.
I don't know if you've got a text about it. Yeah,
but John Mattier surgery on his right hand for the
According to Pat Forty, Mattier is gonna need surgery, is
going to be out for some time.

Speaker 2 (24:40):
That's not great.

Speaker 3 (24:43):
I mean, I don't know if you have any initial
reaction because he's been playing great.

Speaker 5 (24:46):
The reaction is is he going to be backed by
the Texas game? And that's that's October tenth. Yeah, so
you know, so you've got you know, you've got a
little time. You know, you've got seventeen days. Is that
enough time for him to be back and to be
up to speed? That that's an unknown, right, and and

(25:07):
we're probably not gonna have all the information about exactly
the extent of the injury or exactly what the rehab
is going to be. You know, if I'm Oklahoma, I'm
probably just from a psychological standpoint like playing this as
if he's not gonna play against Texas.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
Yes, yes, yes, you know, but I don't know.

Speaker 4 (25:25):
I really don't know.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
Obviously changes changes everything if he can't play now, I
don't really I'm not well versed.

Speaker 4 (25:32):
In the Oklahoma backup quarterback situation. Maybe the next.

Speaker 5 (25:35):
Couple of weeks, well we'll learn a little bit more.
But it's unfortunate, you know, not that Materi was like
a heisman guy.

Speaker 2 (25:43):
I mean, he's he was a heisman.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
I'm not buying that.

Speaker 2 (25:48):
I mean, I'm with you.

Speaker 4 (25:48):
Yeah, he's a good player and he's helped them, but
I don't think like I think they're good beyond him.
I think Oklahoma's good beyond him. But I was.

Speaker 5 (25:58):
Really looking forward to red because I want to see
arch Manning how he handles you know, what looks like
to my eye, a real Brent Venables defense, the kind
of vintage Brent Venables defense we saw at Clemson, you know.

Speaker 4 (26:17):
And I want to see him play against that type
of defense.

Speaker 5 (26:19):
And then you know, conversely, Texas's defense is really good too,
Like that's an old school physical football game, and Red
River always has stuff that happens that you never quite
expect and you can't really predict. But when you're talking
about two should be you know, top five or top

(26:40):
ten teams coming into that game, it's special. And so
I hope it doesn't diminish that because of an injury.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
That would be unfortunate, that would stinky.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
Yeah, I'm with you on the whole Heisman thing from
a tier, like we're at the stage where the gamble
the gambling shops essentially are like, oh, that guy had
a great game, let's make a nice and favorite to
get some bets.

Speaker 2 (26:59):
You know, it feels a little goofy.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
All right, Dan Wolkin Yahoo Sports obviously follow him, check
out his stuff, Enjoy Georgia Alabama. That'll be that'll be
interesting this weekend. I'll go ahead and take Alabama on
an upset.

Speaker 2 (27:11):
I'm with you.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
I like Alabama on the road and I like Oregon
on the road to two road dogs fun.

Speaker 4 (27:16):
Yeah, it's great. Athens is a great place to see
game if you if you haven't been before, it's it's
it's special.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
Yeah all right, buddy, Thanks
