I woke up to go to the bathroom, and I
walked up to the and I looked over, and you're
on your phone doing a crossword or whatever you were doing.
And I was like, no headphones on a crossword puzzle.

Yeah, so good.

Nothing sets castle more. What you got to do?

Last night, we went around the corner from where we
were staying and went to like this pub slash sports bar.
It was great, got a seat right up there, got
to watch the games. It was fantastic.

Meal. It went cheeseburger with bacon on it. Yeah, it
was a cheap day, for sure.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Do not do that when you're with your wife.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
No, I probably have the salmon, just kind of make
her think that I'm trying to be fit and definitely
up to the task.

I heard and you can tell me if it's true
or not that it was hard to get a table
and a fan, a Patriots fan, recognized you and that's
how you got a table.

Yes.

At first we walked in and there was like seven
booths available, all of them supposedly reserved. And as we
sat down for at least the first thirty minutes and
ordered some apps, still nobody in those booths. And then
finally this gentleman came up who must have been a
manager or worked there. Boston guy, loved Boston guys on
the East Coast. Came up and say, hey, Castle, you
guys want a table. I was like, yeah, we sure do,

and we went out, got a table, and the rest
is history.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
When you were starting at quarterback, either for the Patriots
or the Chiefs. Could you do the call in get
a reservation anywhere in town because you were the guy.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
I hated doing that, especially when I was in Boston.
I was Obviously I wasn't the starter for the first
three years. I was because Brady went down my fourth year.
But that city was so electric in terms of they
love the sports. It was the ultimate sports town. So
you could go in anywhere and as soon as they
recognize that you're part of the Patriots. You would never
pay for a meal.

How would they know?
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Obviously you're a big guy. Yes, and I'd say more
so early on. It was when you went in with
the big guys, right, the three hundred pound guy, and
then all of a sudden they recognize a face or something.
Speaker 6 (03:46):
They come up, Hey, you guys want to drink this?
That and the other. It was. It was fantastic.

He never wore your jersey.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
I always tried too early on, like that was my deal,
Like maybe they'll notice me if I were the sixteen
jersey with the castle on the back too, and just
really put a stamp of approval on it.

And then Kansas City was great.

You could call basically anywhere and they'd get you in
another great sports sound, and it was a good time
just understanding. Yes, you had a little pool because you're
starting quarterback at the same time. I never tried to
really take advantage of it unless people came in and
we had a big party and I was like, hey, yeah.

Yeah, because if you get rejected, it doesn't hurt as bad.

I have never done it as myself. I've called before

toe and my deep voice is no better than my
normal voice.

Yeah, they definitely heard your voice immediately.

It just hurts when you get rejected or when they're
like who. That's always low ego punch and I never
do it unless it's like dire, like someone's in town.
I would say about an eighty five percent success rates
because you can all once. The greatest story is because
in La nobody cares about anything, right, Like they care
about celebrities, but they don't care about anything because they're

celebrities everywhere, right. And so we were in Malibu and
this is like my fourth year on American Idol, and
we wanted to go to the sushi place that's really famous.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Anybody, m no boo, Thanks, no boo. There's the no
Boo in Malibu. And so my agent calls and it's like, hey,
is there, And I'm like fifth string on American Idol,
Like I'm on every episode, but I'm not anything. You're
on an American Idol, right, it doesn't matter. And so he
calls and he goes, hey, uh, I'm representing Bobby Bones.
Is there any way we can get him at table?
(05:47):
And they go please hold. He waits on hopefully like
forty five minutes. My theory is they couldn't figure out
who I was, so they didn't want to say no,
and so they didn't say no. We pull up and
we're in a mini van and all the paparazzi's out there,
and when the minivan pulls up. The paparazzios this ain't
for us, put their cameras down.

We walk in.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
The least famous free reservation I ever got was that one.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
There was one time when we came to New York City.
I was coming to New York City and I asked
Brady where I should go eat. He's like, go to
this one restaurant and I forget what it was. It
was really hard to get into. Well, I thought he
made the reservation for me, right, So I walk in.
Speaker 6 (06:22):
I'm with my wife. We go in and the matre
d looks at I say, yeah, I've got a reservation
for castle and there I go. No. I said, is
it under Tom Brady? And they said yes, But where's Tom?
Speaker 5 (06:36):
And I said, I think he's coming in just a
little bit, but we're here, dude.

He never showed up.

They sat me at like one of the nicest tables
in the middle of this restaurant. It was packed, and
I'm just laughing because they thought Tom was coming and
he put it under his name.

I was like, what ack, that's a little bit dirty
dog too. Yeah, he just screwed me.

kind of player was a Money in your memory of playing.

He was one of the most consistent guys we went
up against. I mean his route running ability.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
He had a great feel for zone but also could
beat man. He was also a bigger wide receiver. I
think he's like six', three two hundred plus, Pounds so
it was. Him it Was plaxico they. Had when you
played against, them you had to realize that they didn't
us have one, dude they had two. Guys and he
always had big games against us. Too he was that
guy that would show up on game. Day was a true,
professional great great guy BECAUSE i knew him off the.

Field incredible person off the, field but when you got
on the, field he was just one of those guys
that could go take over a game because of his.
Talentsen the crazy part is at six to, three he
also was an incredible special. Teamer like he's a guy
that could get a punt and take it to the,
house which you don't see a lot of that with
guys that are six to.

Three he's just all around football. Player.

Man, Okay so first things, first of the, money And
i'm going to pass this over to that because what

BOWL i, mean AND i wasn't even, playing so at
the same, TIME i was sitting there, going, man it
would have been that undefeated. Season it would have been,

Dreams, well you know what nobody likes and you, know
think about, it is this the only people that wanted
you guys to win with The patriots everybody else in the.
League that's true because it makes everybody look bad when
one team wins it. All so and then it was
like we were double digit. Underdogs we played you guys
the last.

Remember end of the, season see, it and all the
starters played the entire game.

Exactly it was crazy both teams and both team like
we were locked in at number. Five you guys were
locked in at number one obviously with the bye. Week
with the bye, week didn't, Care either team didn't. Care
AND i thought that was like that was one of
the most exciting GAMES i played in and not AND
i just remember after that we were SO i was
so down and dejected after we lost to you guys

in the last preseason, game because we'd beat The Denver
broncos like in ninety, eight and so we'd done a
good job like knock stopping records like, that and we
beat a lot of undefeated teams other than that as
The giants when WHEN i was playing, there SO i
thought this was just another time to Do we're going
to do, that AND i so, dejected and it was
it was a really we we we.

Had the opportunity to play you guys.

Again AND i remember talking To spags on the way
back from The Super bowl after we, won and he was, like,
yeah we we didn't show The patriots everything that we
had because we thought we might play them again.

DIDN'T i, MEAN i thought you play to win every,
game throwed everything out, there because as, players that's what

to play all the way, through but you guys started
to put it on.

else was like, Lifted AND i remember, thinking there's no
honor in the.

happy that we, lost AND i was just so, Upset
and it definitely gave us that extra boost BECAUSE i
remember we were down In tampa and we played our

In tampa on the, road AND i Remember plexico saying
we didn't take the Undefeated patriots to the mat to
lose to The Tampa Bay, buccaneers and then we just
rattled off points and we ended up making it not
even a, game but it. Was it definitely was in
the back of our if we can play with The

patriots who destroyed, everybody we can beat, anybody.

Because we're talking about The Super. Bowl after that, game
you do beat an undefeated team as massive, underdogs how
long until you go to?

FUNNY i was, Like i'm gonna be up all. Night
i'm going to be partying the entire. NIGHT i was
so stressed out and so tired that me and my

entertainment AND i was always wondering what was your after?

your running backs Invited Brandon jacob on the field before the.

Is Rod. Payne he was like on the practice. Squad,
EVER i didn't talk to him for years after, that

like he's a much better man THAN i am BECAUSE
i could not have done. That but he was so

KNOW i went to college with him from both from

i never THOUGHT i couldn't play with. Them and WHEN
i got into games THEN i kind of realized there
was another LEVEL i had to. GO i was just
like a hundred AND i THINK i was one hundred
and eighty, pounds one hundred and seventy, pounds And i'm

trying to run in there and block like legitimate defensive
play like bigger. Seniors AND i remember my first, YEAR
i just Kept i'd. Try i'd throw it in, there
But i'd go in there AND i try to stock block,
somebody and they would just toss me aside AND i
just got used to.

It but that's WHAT i, realized MAYBE i need some
development going.

On so you get drafted by The giants right out
Of michigan and you get in, there and so what
was that like making that, Transition Because michigan is a
big time, program and we know when you come from
a program like, that you normally feel prepared for what's
to come, next especially from a competitive. Standpoint but was
there a moment that you were, like, man this is
this is for. Real but welcome to THE nfl moment for?

Yeah my welcome to THE nfl moment was we never
had to learn protections At. Michigan so if the quarterback
didn't point the, GUY i didn't even pay.

Attention you're just. Running i'm just.

RUNNING i, MEAN i know you do a cover to
the zones. Whatever you, know you have the route. CONVERSIONS
i understand, that BUT i didn't understand the protections at.

All SO i got to the.

League and like the first thing they teach you is,
like if you get that quarterback, hit you're getting a bus.
Ticket that means you're gonna get on the first thing
smoking out of town because that quarterback is the.

Franchise SO i had to learn.

PROTECTIONS i had to really learn how to run routes
because defensive line in THE, NFL i, mean they don't
give quarterbacks time to sit back. There we said these
max protection two receiver routes In michigan that we, thought
oh so it's gonna you, know nobody's gonna get. Home
and they didn't At, michigan but in the league they get.

Home its training camp old school back, Then oh, yeah
and dorm it up that kind of.

Thing we did it for four weeks of TWO a, days, Right,
no four weeks of TWO a, days and then we
had we came like right after The combines and had
a rookie mini. Camp then we had three weeks before
like we just it was LIKE i think BEFORE i

stepped on the field in The pros in, PRESEASON i
THINK i had played more football THAN i did my
entire time in college because we were working so. Much
it was, ridiculous but it got me. Prepared and that's
WHY i look at now And i'm, thinking how do
these guys get? Prepared IF i didn't have the TWO a,
days IF i didn't have the all this stuff coming
from a NON nfl. OFFENSE i don't know HOW i

would have, transitioned AND i don't know IF i would
have Even it took me three years to really see
the field in THE, nfl just because of the difference of,
style let alone the, athleticism let alone what the things
that matter so much in THE, nfl.

TECHNIQUES i wouldn't have had the time to really adapt to,
them or we've been open to. Them SO i feel
for a lot of these younger players it's a it's
a way tougher league to, crack and that's why you
see a lot of players playing longer into their careers
because it's hard.

To get some of these younger players up to.

Speak so you're With Tom, coughlin he's known As oh
he's he's a, Badass he's a.

Know i've been part of a program With belichick similar

You did you feel like his messaging sometimes to the,
team like after he gets after you and maybe your.

was it a difficult environment playing like you had to
be mentally tough, basically.

You definitely had to be mentally.

Tough but coming From michigan and and my high, school
LIKE i was used to being coached.

Hard but one of the things THAT i.

Wouldn't watch that Play lombardi On broadway right AFTER i
got done, Playing and a lot of the stuff That
Tom coughlin did was the exact same stuff That Vince
lombardi did when he went to The Green Bay packers
FROM i think it was From New. YORK i think
it was offensive coordinator or defense coordinator From New york
and went over to AND i was just, like really
disappointing BECAUSE i was, Like, tom just if you would

Last night, we went around the corner from where we
were staying and went to like this pub slash sports bar.
It was great, got a seat right up there, got
to watch the games. It was fantastic.

Meal. It went cheeseburger with bacon on it. Yeah, it
was a cheap day, for sure.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Do not do that when you're with your wife.

No, I probably have the salmon, just kind of make
her think that I'm trying to be fit and definitely
up to the task.

I heard and you can tell me if it's true
or not that it was hard to get a table
and a fan, a Patriots fan, recognized you and that's
how you got a table.

At first we walked in and there was like seven
booths available, all of them supposedly reserved. And as we
sat down for at least the first thirty minutes and
ordered some apps, still nobody in those booths. And then
finally this gentleman came up who must have been a
manager or worked there. Boston guy, loved Boston guys on
the East Coast. Came up and say, hey, Castle, you
guys want a table. I was like, yeah, we sure do,

and we went out, got a table, and the rest
is history.

When you were starting at quarterback, either for the Patriots
or the Chiefs. Could you do the call in get
a reservation anywhere in town because you were the guy.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
I hated doing that, especially when I was in Boston.
I was Obviously I wasn't the starter for the first
three years. I was because Brady went down my fourth year.
But that city was so electric in terms of they
love the sports. It was the ultimate sports town. So
you could go in anywhere and as soon as they
recognize that you're part of the Patriots. You would never
pay for a meal.

How would they know?
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Obviously you're a big guy. Yes, and I'd say more
so early on. It was when you went in with
the big guys, right, the three hundred pound guy, and
then all of a sudden they recognize a face or something.

They come up, Hey, you guys want to drink this?
That and the other. It was. It was fantastic.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
He never wore your jersey.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
I always tried too early on, like that was my deal,
Like maybe they'll notice me if I were the sixteen
jersey with the castle on the back too, and just
really put a stamp of approval on it.

And then Kansas City was great.

You could call basically anywhere and they'd get you in
another great sports sound, and it was a good time
just understanding. Yes, you had a little pool because you're
starting quarterback at the same time. I never tried to
really take advantage of it unless people came in and
we had a big party and I was like, hey, yeah.

like who. That's always low ego punch and I never

I would say about an eighty five percent success rates
because you can all once. The greatest story is because
in La nobody cares about anything, right, Like they care
about celebrities, but they don't care about anything because they're

celebrities everywhere, right. And so we were in Malibu and
this is like my fourth year on American Idol, and
we wanted to go to the sushi place that's really famous.

Anybody, m no boo, Thanks, no boo. There's the no
Boo in Malibu. And so my agent calls and it's like, hey,
is there, And I'm like fifth string on American Idol,
Like I'm on every episode, but I'm not anything. You're
on an American Idol, right, it doesn't matter. And so he
calls and he goes, hey, uh, I'm representing Bobby Bones.
Is there any way we can get him at table?

And they go please hold. He waits on hopefully like
forty five minutes. My theory is they couldn't figure out
who I was, so they didn't want to say no,
and so they didn't say no. We pull up and
we're in a mini van and all the paparazzi's out there,
and when the minivan pulls up. The paparazzios this ain't
for us, put their cameras down.

We walk in.

The least famous free reservation I ever got was that one.

There was one time when we came to New York City.
I was coming to New York City and I asked
Brady where I should go eat. He's like, go to
this one restaurant and I forget what it was. It
was really hard to get into. Well, I thought he
made the reservation for me, right, So I walk in.

I'm with my wife. We go in and the matre
d looks at I say, yeah, I've got a reservation
for castle and there I go. No. I said, is
it under Tom Brady? And they said yes, But where's Tom?

He never showed up.

They sat me at like one of the nicest tables
in the middle of this restaurant. It was packed, and
I'm just laughing because they thought Tom was coming and
he put it under his name.

played against, them you had to realize that they didn't
us have one, dude they had two. Guys and he
always had big games against us. Too he was that
guy that would show up on game. Day was a true,
professional great great guy BECAUSE i knew him off the.

on the, field he was just one of those guys
that could go take over a game because of his.
Talentsen the crazy part is at six to, three he
also was an incredible special. Teamer like he's a guy
that could get a punt and take it to the,

we didn't take the Undefeated patriots to the mat to
lose to The Tampa Bay, buccaneers and then we just
rattled off points and we ended up making it not

THINK i had played more football THAN i did my
entire time in college because we were working so. Much
it was, ridiculous but it got me. Prepared and that's
WHY i look at now And i'm, thinking how do
these guys get? Prepared IF i didn't have the TWO a,
days IF i didn't have the all this stuff coming
from a NON nfl. OFFENSE i don't know HOW i

would have, transitioned AND i don't know IF i would
have Even it took me three years to really see
the field in THE, nfl just because of the difference of,
style let alone the, athleticism let alone what the things
that matter so much in THE, nfl.

for a lot of these younger players it's a it's
