Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume brilliant drive by Bryce Young. You see the
elusiveness would be a Bryce might never hurt, doesn't have
(00:26):
happy fe sex fires here, Awareness, understanding, recognition, awareness, understanding, recognition.
That kid is good, That kid is good, That kid
is good. All right, everybody, Welcome to episode three of
(00:49):
the Bryce Young Podcast. Um Jay Crane from the Jay
Boys Show. But as usual, I want to kick it
over and say hello to Heisman contender, undefeated quarterback. Really
doing a heck of a job right now, miss stir
Bryce Young, Bryce, what's up? But but the much how
you doing doing good? And it's the third time. It's
it's like magic now, it's like waking up now, it's
pretty easy, exactly again into a routine. That's exactly right,
(01:10):
that's exactly right. But uh you know again man, big
win for you all over Southern miss this past weekend
to keep the ball rolling and kind of looking you know,
a quarter somewhat of a way through the season. A
third however you want to look at it. Typically when
you're at Alabama goes a little bit longer than the
normal regular season. But through four games, looking at these numbers, Bryce,
I mean, you know, completion fifteen touchdowns one interception. You're
(01:32):
four and oh, ranked number one in the country, legitimate
Heisman contender. I know you're a humble guy, but and
expect success and are super competitive, But I mean, did
you expect it to go as well as it's gone?
I mean, is it? Is it something you had in
your mind? Um? I mean kind of individual numbers? Was
never really anything I had in mind really actually honestly,
even having mind now, UM, you know obviously, UM you
(01:54):
know our our goal and and my goal personally, it's
just you know, just to go one and know each week.
So UM, you know, for me, I wasn't really coming
in thinking I want to hit this number, I want
to hit this mark. Um, I think, you know, I
think I think I've done some good things in these weeks,
but there's definitely a lot of stuff for me to
improve on, and um, you know, really the personal kind
(02:16):
of status, accolades, all that it. You know, it's external stuff.
It comes and goes. But UM, you know, we're just
trying to you know, we're trying to focus on this
week now, UM for the last week behind us, learn
from what we have to learn from, um from it,
and then you know, keep moving on. So as far
as the personal stuff, it wasn't really hasn't really been
anything that's really a crossed my mind too much now.
(02:39):
You know, I almost want to say, you know, like what,
but I want to phrase it in a way Bryce
that you talk about team goes right and hitting certain
you know, not just as you go across the season.
Do you kind of take it you know obviously game
by game it's kind of an easy way to put it.
But before the season, your goal is don't win the
National Championship, right, And do you set you know, team
goals as an offense or do you go by what
the O C and the coaches that puts out there
(02:59):
on the board all know everybody has there in the
the players lounge, Yeah, yeah, you know everyone. Yeah, you
kind of have to like take that approach. They really, um,
you know, Coach Saving and all the coaches they kind
of um that's something that they've they've always talked to
us about, is making sure that um, you know, you
obviously have you know, you have the broad goals in
the offseason, but you can't, um, you know, you can't
(03:22):
get to the broad coals without those those smaller goals.
And really for us. The biggest thing is has always
been just too when the season hits at least is
to go one to know, So we kind of learned
that from them. We learned that, um, you know, you
have to make sure that you know, you get a bit,
you're you're focused on something to get better at each
and every day, and um, you know you really like
you you really have to take your baby by day.
(03:43):
Like it's really not a saying like if you just
start looking ahead and you start wondering about person stuff
like that's you know that that's when a lot of
things change. So like it's really not just just a saying,
like you really have to attack each day Taggi's rep.
Like you know, you just want to get better at
that rep. And um as something that that coaches really
instilled in and really all of us. Yeah, then I
(04:03):
do gotta ask your Bryce playing you're a student of
the game, you know, not the whole game, not just offensively.
What do you think though offensively is the most important
stat outside of whether you win or lose the game
that that helps you guys, you know when you got
to look down to it, I mean rushing yards per game,
third down conversion, rate stuff like that. What would if
you could pinpoint one turnover something like that, what what
would you pick? Yeah, um yeah, probably um just as
(04:26):
a as a unit, you know, it's definitely probably I
had to choose one to probably you know, probably a
turnover ratio. You know, we stress out a lot as
a team. Uh, always want to have a positive turnover ratio. Um,
don't want to give the ball up an offense and
then defense was who created me turnover as possible? And
when you look at really games that you know at
all pretty much all high levels, a lot of times
(04:46):
people who when they turnover battle win the game. So, um,
you know that's something that we stress a lot, um,
you know, as a team. So um you know that
that's that's a stat that that we take prior in
on both both into the wall turnover is equal field position.
We all know how important field position is. That's why
penalties are so important too. But you know, in y'all's
last game and obviously you're playing the game, so you
(05:07):
don't hear it, and you watch the film and don't
hear the commenting of the game. Jordan Rodgers, you know,
compared to your skill set to his brother Aaron's you know,
your ability to to improvise and throw off platform. You know,
I look at it almost like playing shortstop in baseball,
being able to make throws and throw guys out. How
important is it to not just be able to throw
from one angle? And when you look at yourself, you know,
when you get a compliment like that, I mean, what
(05:28):
do you think. I mean, that's Aaron Rodgers. He's one
of the best to do it. Yeah, no, that is
that is crazy like that. That's my favorite quarterback. UM
to watch UM play as definitely who I who. I
tryal model my game after the most. So to hear
something like that, I know, that's that's that's a that's
a really really a company, especially coming from UM. You know,
(05:51):
I got the I got the opportunity to meet UM,
to meet his brother, and UM, you know, he's really
really cool to me. He talks to me a little
bit in person about it, and that was that was
a great opportunity. So UM hear and stuff like that
is you know, it's really great. It's really humbling though
it really um you know, to hear something like that,
you know, it's kind of a little you know, a
little boost on you're you're you're doing something right and
you're doing some in the right direction of it. You
(06:12):
know you have to Um, you know, it's it's encouraging,
but you know, obviously there's a there's a long uh
you know, a long road and a lot more stuff too,
you know, to try to reach those heights and um,
you know when the season going on, that's not stuff
you're really like focused on week by week stuff. But um,
but it's it's definitely really nice. Here was that when
(06:33):
you were growing up? Like? Who was the quarterback you were? What?
Was it Aaron that you were watching? You know, like
I want to be like that guy. I know you
said you mold yourself after it, But is there one
quarterback that growing up you're like that was my guy?
You know? For me it was Michael Vick. Yeah, that's
a good question. I mean, as long as I've been
a student of the game, like it's definitely been a
Rodgers as far as being like a little kid, um,
(06:53):
just like yeah, as far as me, it's like a
little kid watching like not really like you know, studying,
just without really knowing the game. I don't know, actually
I didn't. I'm probably missing someone like I'm like, oh,
it's definitely, But I don't think there wasn't like one person,
like one quarterback at least. I was like, I was
(07:14):
like just like crazy, just just just like crazy, like uh,
you know, following. But as far as as long as
I've actually been, you know, a student of the game
and stuff, it's definitely Rogers. I got you. So, what
about Aaron specifically? Because he does so many things, is
there one thing that you can kind of pin point
your like that's to me what separates him or is
(07:35):
it the whole bag that he's got, because I mean
he's got the whole bag. Yeah, No, it's everything. But um, specifically,
just his ability just just the throws he makes it
accuracy and his ability to throw on and off platform
from any angle is change his release point. Um, that's
stuff that, um, you know, it's getting a little bit
more and more popular like in football nowadays. But like
(07:57):
he's being there for like a minute, like for sure,
like he's been able to he he's mastered in my opinion,
He's probably in my opinion, he's the most gifted like
physical pastor ever, Like he's stuff like some of the
a lot of the those he's been able to make.
He makes those that I don't think really anyone can
(08:18):
ever make, just his accuracy and his ability get the
ball out as quick as he wants from any any scenario,
any arm angle, how well he creates and throws all
platform like it's it's like watching cut ups and stuff
like that. Is it's crazy stuff he can do. So
I'm I'm definitely a big fan. No, it's it's like
(08:38):
he's like double jointing every part of his body. Sometimes
he was him and my home's watching him do it's crazy.
But you know, you're always talking bright soon I hear you,
and you're right, you know, about improving and trying to
take the next step, and you're never perfect and you're
never always already there as a player. What areas, specifically
your game is when you're always working on I don't
want to call a weakness because you really don't have weaknesses,
but we can all get better in certain areas. What's
(08:59):
an area maybe that you're looking at right now after
turning the tape on it, certainly the season that you're like,
I could make a big jump there and help us
even more throughout the season. If there is one. Yeah, No,
it's a lot, um. You know, every time you wants
to tape, you see the stuff that you know that
you miss. You see the good, bad and ugly and um,
you know, from last week week to week, every week,
I've seen a lot of stuff that I want to
(09:20):
improve on, a lot of a lot of reps that
you know you kind of wish you could get back. Um.
So you know, really really it's a lot of stuff.
It's it's just how trying to get quicker at processing
and processing the game, just being more receptive stuff, whether
it's UM making quicker decisions in the run game in
the past game, or PO make quicker decisions on what
I want to do, UM with protections making. You know,
(09:42):
it's making better decisions seeing stuff, um, you know, having
a better feel for for that, and then you know,
and then all the maintenance stuff. You know, UM, I
could definitely you know there there's there's reps you say,
I could have been a lot more efficient in my
pocket movement. I could have got the ball out earlier here.
But I think, you know, I think each game, each
week you kind of see things, you you know, see
(10:03):
things you don't like that you did, and you try
to kind of tweak them, and then you might do
a little better the next week, and then something else
from next slip. So I think it's really a constant,
really um like give and take as far as um
you know, you find something to correct, you work on,
it might get a little better, and then something else
pops up. So I don't think I don't think it's
it's ever going to be at a point where I'm like,
now I'm good, like I got no, it's good football,
(10:25):
I got this. Yeah, I mean hopefully I get there
with I haven't even been close yet. Well, right, something
asked this. We we always hear the term, you know,
watching film on watching film, But there's people that watch film,
there's people that know how to watch film. When did
you know exactly what I'm talking about? When was it
that you really learned how to watch film outside of
just all right, well i'm gonna watch myself and this,
that and the other. Because to me, there's a huge difference,
(10:47):
and once you learn, it's like a light comes on. Yeah, definitely,
I think for me, I think kind of just just
turning that page and film that script really started out
say in high school, say probably around what sophomore junior year.
One of those two, probably junior that was took the
biggest jump. Um. But yeah, like you said, there's a difference.
(11:07):
You know, there's people who there's kind of level. It's
just like there's anything. But you know, you start watching
film and then it's like, okay, you just hey, you know,
I just saw some highlights. And then it gets to
know they run these general coverages and then gets I
mean it just gets exponentially more and more in depth.
And I think I started to really like start to
understand and realize how, you know, how much in depth
(11:28):
you have to go in high school. I think it's
when it started then. Obviously it's evolved a lot a
lot more with um, you know, being in college and
and um, you know, seeing how other people study, being
around other like being around other coaches, being around other
great great football minds and seeing you know what, you know,
having those conversations. So it's definitely grown a lot since then.
(11:49):
It it's going a lot. But I think as far
as me starting to really consciously understand how important it is, um,
the depths you have to go. Um, I wouldn't say
I understood the depths you have to go that you
had um in high schoo yet, but really just understanding
that there's there's another layer, another level, seeing what you
could do. Probably my brain kind of wrapping itself around
that start in high school. And then it's it's obviously, um,
(12:12):
you know it's gone up a lot since that. That's
great stuff right there, because the light clicks on some
people right when they hit college, some people from high
school like yourself. But you know, you've got all these accolades, Rice,
and I'm sure you're probably used to it by now,
and the articles and this and that, but one came
out I thought it was pretty fascinating. Man. ESPN dropped
an article titled nothing seems to Rattle Bryce Young and Bryce,
(12:32):
to me, how important is it to you to be
able to make sure your teammates see you composed and
that nothing rattles you because you are the one that's
behind center, you are the one that is taking the ball.
You're the one that touches the ball every play. I mean,
that sums you up in my opinion. Um, I'd say, honestly,
I wouldn't say I'm thinking too much as far as
like let me manufacture my appearance or manufacture my presence
(12:57):
for um, you know, for the people around me. UM.
I think really I'm just just trying to be me.
I think there's you know, there's times of places obviously, UM.
You know it as a teammate is you know, as
a leader, you have to you know, you might have
to maybe manufacturing stuff or change stuff or say some stuff.
But as far as you know, kind of how I
how I carry myself, I feel like that's kind of
a big thing to try to manufacture so real recognized, real, right,
(13:21):
So you know that it's hard to fake it. Man,
it's hard to fake that, especially something that you know
that carried out. So I wouldn't say it's something that
I'm just like in my head, it's like I want
to make sure people see me like this. That's just
kind of my personal way of handling UM. You know,
of handling things and going about things. And you know,
I've talked about it a little bit before, but I'm
a big believer in UM and you know, they're being
(13:44):
different ways to go about really anything, but especially playing football,
playing sports, playing this position, there's a different ways. So
that's just you know, kind of how I am, Umman,
that's just that's just that's me like that, that's just
how I how I how I choose approach to how
I feel and have learned is most efficient for me. Um.
But I think that's just you know that, that's just
(14:04):
me trying to be what's most efficient to help with team.
Most I don't think it's truly anything I'm anything I'm
I'm aiming to change or aiming manufacturer. It's just just natural, baby,
all natural. But I want to ask you this too, bright,
because again, I mean, you know, you don't read your
own plus press clippings. They're right, they write stuff about
you left and right. This, then another somebody's gonna be
keeping a scrap book or something though, right, So somebody
(14:26):
in the background and the family has got to be
keeping a scrap book, you know, Because again, I mean,
these are stuff when you get done, when you actually
get done and can look back at it. I mean,
this is big time stuff. Man. Did you dream of
this when you were a kid? Uh? Yeah, yeah, a
little bit. Yeah. My dad's definitely probably. He probably knows
everything ever said about me. He stopped trying to even
he stopped trying to even talk to me about it,
(14:46):
because I would like stop on him, be like look like, hey, da,
you know, I like you like, but I'm it's like
we got a long way to go. Man, we got
a long way to go. I'm really like, he's really
not like and it's been my whole life, like it's
been like anytime as anything, whether it's good, it's bad
again indifference, like like, I mean, he's you know, he's dad,
(15:06):
so obviously for sure he's he's you know, if it's bad,
he'll he'll he'll be like he you know, he'll get mad,
he'll get serve he's good. Actually, honestly, he really only
gets the bad and it's good. He just phyticized. But
like I'm I'm always like like, first off, everyone's everyone's
in times of their own opinion, whether like anyone, anyone
(15:27):
or anything, like, I don't I don't take anything personally
if he's negative or I don't think honestly, I don't
even think it's like oh we should have wrote that
or there. I think everyone's tide of their own opinion.
But um, he's definitely the one to keeping keeping track.
But he he doesn't even nowadays, he doesn't even talk
to me about it. He don't even tell me stuff
he heard or read see we we we've been but um,
(15:49):
I mean yeah, I mean playing those Saturdays and especially
you know, you know Story program and really honestly just
me being able to go out with my god. Just yeah,
it's a dream comes through, comes through it. It's definitely blessing.
You know, when you start playing football, it's crazy, Like
when I started and I was younger, Um, you know,
like it's crazy how kind of things change and um,
(16:12):
and you know, circumstances changed in the sport and reality
is changing the sport. You know, you start, like I remember,
like honestly not too long ago, playing college football, especially
like you know, high high level college football was like
the most foreign thing, Like it didn't even seem touchable.
Like it was like you know, when you're a kid,
you just watching people on TV and it's like, oh, yeah,
that that's that's college football. That's that's television. You know.
(16:36):
When I was younger and you go to games, it's
just he doesn't even seem like, oh, I'm gonna be
here in a few years. I'm I can't wait time
to get here. It's just it's like, you know, it's
like anything else. It's like like watching the show on TV.
Like watching uh, like going to a Lakers game like
anything like that. You don't think like, oh yeah, it's
gonna be me soon, like, and you know when things
(16:56):
least to the next and years, you know, and you
just keep building on where you're at, and you know
at a certain point, you know, the closer and closer
you get to it, you start to realize eventually it's
gonna be reality. But I didn't really you know, even
when you start to, you know, when you're able to
comprehend it, it takes you into internalize. And honestly, until
last year walking like my first game, it was like
(17:18):
even going out last year and just going out and
be on the crowd and you know, just being on
the sideline, it was like, oh wow, like I'm really
college athlete, and I think, you know, I can't speak
for everyone, but I think for a lot of people. Um,
you know, I can speak for myself. But it's it's
it's almost surreal. And even you know, you can do
a full offseason of work and all these practices, but
(17:39):
a lot of times, you know, until you're actually out
there and you realize like, hey, this is like my reality.
It's and honestly, for me, sometimes it's still crazy. Sometimes,
like like this game, Um, last game, it was it
was an amazing environment. Um our fans came out, you know,
they had a really big president. I was a sideline.
I was like, wow, like this is actually like like
(17:59):
I talked to told my coach. I was like, hey,
like this is actually a pretty cool moment. It was
they turned the lights off. Everyone had their phones out,
and I was like, you know, like we're definitely like
we're all locked and we're trying to win, but we
don't get these all like we're not gonna get this
for the rest of our lives. Let's just take like
fights and seconds like enjoy this for a second and
get back back to what we're doing. But um, you know,
(18:19):
sometimes it's still surreal. Yeah, you know something too. But
as I noticed in that last game, watching you know,
the chemistry for you guys on the deep ball, on
the vertical ball seems to really be getting there just
for a second, key tub, because you know what, there
there was some there was some throws there early that
that you guys had a great connection on and just
watching you progress through the season, it seems to me
like that vertical ball in that chemistry with those wide
(18:40):
receivers starting to get there, which is just gonna add
another element to you guys offensively. Can you talk about
just the importance of that, because you know, as well
as I do rice to further you can keep them
safeties out of the box, the better the run game is. Yeah, yeah,
I think that really. Um, you know, you actually summed
up pretty well. I think, um, well, we're you know,
we've always strive, um, you know, strive offensively to have um,
you know, we've always understood the importance of balance and
(19:02):
try to have a balance attack. So UM, I think
really every aspect of of of offense feeds off one another. UM.
I think that's why it's you know, everyone's everyone is
so involved, you know when you see so when you
see a long run, you know, obviously you think of
the line and the running back. A lot of times
its receivers and and and then block and then vice versities,
(19:24):
and then maybe partially in the past game and then
vice versa. You see a long pass, you think of
the receivers and um in the corporate but you don't
think of what the line is doing and what the
running banks doing and then also what they did in
the run game. So I think, um, you know, we
we kind of understand how much how important balance is,
and you know, you know, we're we're definitely not what
we want to be yet and you know we're we're
(19:45):
really looking to improving and offensets of um of our offense.
But um, you know, I think again, we're just we're
just trying to push that balance and we're trying to
elevate as much as we can. Yeah, we always say
balance keeps you on the beam. It keeps you on
the beam. And speaking about being on the beam, you
got Old Miss coming into town this week, big match up.
(20:06):
A lot of people talking about the offenses. What about
this matchup? Bryce, if you had to sum it up,
excites you the most about it? When when you're looking
at it, there's something that kind of jumps out to you,
because I mean, you don't these prime time matchups, like
you said, with the phones out and join it provide
a ten seconds. Not that you don't take every team seriously,
but I mean this is a big one. These don't
happen all the time. Yeah, this is this is our
first divisional opponent and UM and and UM coach talking
(20:30):
about today actually Um, you know, any time you play
some of your division, it's it's you know, it's even
bigger of a game. Um. So that was our first
SEC divisional opponent, really really good team. Um. You know
they're they're you know, good on on both sides of
the ball. Um. You know, we know we have to prepare,
we have to work really hard. Um. But you know
(20:53):
for this being our you know this is a divisional
visional opponent, our first one. Um, you know that that
definitely holds a weight. Yeah. And I mean again, these
SEC West matchups, And I mean you look up and
down the conference and and in college football and you
see the parody Bryce. But in the West, it just
seems like, you know, we always talked about us the NFC,
the a f C, and the SEC, but can you
(21:13):
just talk about playing in the SEC West. I mean
it's it's the best division in college football, and it
gives you a challenge every single week. And I mean
that's gonna be something that's important to a competitor like you. Yeah, um,
being SEC as a whole, and and and um you
know that that's truely the beauty of it is you
get to go against the best each and every week. Um,
(21:34):
like you said, great conference, great division. And for us
to know, um, you know, when we start SEC playing,
it's almost like another season, you know it. Um like
you said, it's weekend, it's week out. Um, we know it.
To expect, we know, you know, we know we we
have to bring our best each in every game. And um,
for us to play in a conference like that, that
(21:55):
that definitely gets us better each week. Yeah, and again
you know, getting ready and in the march and do
what you guys are gonna do. Passing those tests can
only give you more confidence as you guys move on.
And you know what's funny, You're you're from California. Matt
Corral's from California. You look around a lot of California
quarterbacks and coming through the SEC, and I really round
this part of the country, do you know, Matt, I mean,
did you all cross passed before? Is this kind of
(22:18):
a battle that's gone on throughout high school or anything
like that? Yeah, yeah, I do know, Matt. I haven't
um this, we haven't played each other before. But um, yeah,
you know, quarterback, the quarterback world itself is pretty small,
and especially in southern California and um and uh, growing
up in southern California. UM, I hadn't. I didn't you know,
(22:40):
know Matt Crolle like growing up, but I knew the
name like from his freshman year of high school on.
And then you know obviously through camps and you know
you through through a bunch of stuff. Um, you know
I've definitely been around before. Really cool, dude, I'm really uh,
you know, really talented. Um. And you know, the whole
