(00:35):
understation recognition, awareness, understanding recognition, that kid is good, That
kid is good. That kid is good. Hey, what's up everybody?
Welcome to the newest episode of the Bryce Young Podcast.
I'm Jake Crane from The Joy Show, but I'm gonna
bring in the star once again. Very excited to be
talking after another big week, another big w that's Alabama
(00:58):
quarterback Bryce Young? Bryce, what's up? Man? But the much?
How you doing doing good another week? And and coming
off a big win? Uh first SEC home game? Just
you know, before we get into it, you know, how
are you feeling right now? I mean, it's it's it
was a hyped up matchup. You guys went in there
and handled business. Yeah, definitely, it was Um, you know,
it was it was it was good to get, like
(01:18):
you said, that first home win and that first divisional win.
So so that was a positive. Um, you know, and
especially when you get a good good win against a
really good team. Um, you know, that's always really good.
But um, you know, there's there's a lot of stuff
we've canna work on. A lot of stuff to improve on. Um,
and then you know, we definitely have a again, a
really big game this week. So I'm just gonna you know,
(01:39):
turn the page on that learn from you know, learn
from the good, learned from the bad, and then um,
you know I have to prepare this week. How electric
was Bryant Denny. I mean you were right there. I
know they were excited to get you all back, hyped
up matchup. Like I said Coach kiffen coming to town.
It felt like the atmosphere was pretty electric. Yeah, yeah,
it was an amazing atmosphere for me, it was. It
was really special because that was really the first, um
(02:00):
probably the you know, probably the best atmosphere at at
Brian Denny that I've have been able to really you know,
witness since being a player. Um So the last year
obviously it was COVID so you couldn't fill out stadiums,
and then um, you know, the first two home games
were really good, but um, this Saturday was definitely most
live has been this year, most life has been for
(02:21):
me as a player. So um, it was really special
to see how electric it was for sure, and you know,
watching you guys, Bryce, and and it hit me about
halfway through the second quarter that I thought you, coach O'Brien,
the whole offense did an unbelievable job of being patient,
you know, not not trying to get something that wasn't there.
You guys are running ball with success. The intermediate passing
game was working. Can you talk about not getting gredient
(02:43):
and being patient and doing the things in the pocket
that you did to make good decisions because it's hard.
You know, it's like they said, chicks digg the long ball, man,
But you guys were methodical on the way you did
it and just talked about that for a second. Just
being patient. Yeah, you know for us and for me personally,
it's really just about for on the game plan and
you know, making sure that you know, we execute whatever
(03:03):
players are calling and um, take what the defense gives us.
And you know, it was a little more methodical this weekend. Um,
and you know we kind of we that was something
we were kind of um, you know, we were prepared
that it could go that way, and um, you know,
I think as a team, we did a really good
job of responding of making sure that um, you know,
we tried to stay the change. We tried to Um,
you know again and take with the defense gave us,
(03:25):
and UM, I think again, there's a lot of stuff
we can improve on, um, and that we you know,
we have to improve on. But um, you know, all
in all, I thought we did a lot of good
things too. Yeah, and you know, Bright said, I kinda
watching you guys, the communication between you and coach O'Brien
during the game, whether it's adjustments, whether it's seeing if
they're giving you something new. Can you just talk about
how you know, the rhythm of that you're going over
(03:46):
there and giving each other information. You know, in the
NFL they're swiping that that board and showing the plays.
But with you guys, you know that the communication seems
on point. You guys seem on the same page. Yeah, definitely,
And that's something that you know that that we you know,
we're we try to work on and really that's something
we talked about a lot because, UM, you know, that's
that's one of the most important relationships on the team,
is the quarterback and those seeing you know, and you
(04:08):
know between the Q and Newever is calling the place.
So UM, you know really that that a lot of
that comes from, you know, establishment trust in the off season. Um,
and then the discussions we have also in the off season,
but week to week, you know, the game planning stuff
that the discussions we have about what we want we
want to attack, how you feel about certain places or
encourage a certain matchups, stuff like that. So, um, you
(04:28):
know you really wanted to be you know that stuff
you try to develop during the week and then um,
you just have to stay on top of it and
and keep communicating. And uh, you know, luckily I get to,
you know, be coached by OBUs, you know, makes it
a lot. You know, it's it's he's not a hard
guy to communicate with. We we you know, we worked
really well together and um, you know it's really it's
really encouraging for me and it really helps me a
(04:49):
lot to kind of have that open line of communication. Yeah.
And you know, but I said, they make a lot
of comparisons to your game. Russell Wilson Aaron Rodgers. We talked,
he balled again this week. We talked about him last week.
He balled again this week. Uh for the Packers. But
you know, one thing that that I see that you
guys have a common is throwing off platform and and
you don't have to be said all the time to
throw it, and do you feel like that gives you
(05:09):
a big advantage. I remember the touchtome you throw over
the middle. You know, it was almost like doing a
layoup off the other foot, and you're so accurate with
it and it's really dangerous. I mean that's something you've
always been able to do or is it something you
continue to work on, because it seems like the quarterbacks
nowadays where it's my homes all the way to Aaron Rodgers.
Being able to throw off platform if you can move
at all, or really if you even can't move is
a must. Oh. Yeah, it's definitely something that i've you know,
(05:32):
I've I've developed, I've worked on something I'm still actively
working on. Um. But yeah, it comes from um yeah,
it's just you know, it comes from a lot of reps.
It comes from trying to simulate as new situations as possible. Um.
But you know, luckily it's something I was kind of,
um you know, introduced to at a young age and
and taught early on and then I'm still working to
(05:52):
master develop it and and get better at it. But um,
I feel like, you know, like you said, nowadays and
the modern kind of how the quarterback was just changing
a little bit. Um, you know, being able to throw
off platform is is definitely advantaged. So it's something that
again I'm trying to trying to perfect, trying to hone
and keep getting better at so that I can just
grow and become a better player. Yeah, and you know,
(06:15):
when you're in the pocket too. I don't think people
realize unless you're like six ft seven or six ft eight,
you're not having to look over people, but there's people
in your way. And I think sometimes people that are
watched on TV take that for granted. How is it
when you're seeing through those windows? I mean, are you
you're obviously feeling who's in front of you, but kind
of take us inside your helmet there? I mean, are
you having to put balls in certain areas that are
outside of of where you feel like the defensive lineman
(06:36):
is gonna be. Because I think that's one of the
most underrated things of a quarterback that a quarterback can possess. Yeah,
I think, I think I think kind of just seeing
and um, you know, and seeing through like you said,
seeing through those windows, seeing through the own D line.
I think, you know, it's it's kind of interesting. It's
kind of hard to explain something truth like, you know,
it's kind of hard to like it's probably something that
(06:59):
people are going to complete the grasp unless they play
the position. But you know, a lot of times you
just kind of have to you know, you have to
see through lanes and you have to see certain kind
of flashing images and and make decisions based off those.
And a lot of that comes from pre and post
that knowledge of what's going on defensively. UM. That's why
you know, me personally, I always stressed, UM, you know,
I'm I'm I'm big on kind of you know, trying
(07:21):
to try to understand as much as I can about
defense and the defenses that were expected to get because
you know, you don't really get to see the full
picture like you might be able to on on TV
or if you're or something so like if you're you know,
you can only really see certain select things and you
can only see in in select windows. And because of that, um,
(07:41):
you have to be able to, um, you have to
be able to kind of fill in the rest of
the blanks. And that kind of comes through with with again,
with knowledge of what's going on. If you know, if
there's pressure where it's from. Um, you know, coverages they
like to be at, where safeties probably are based off
pre and posts, Apple just like stuff like that. So, um,
you know you kind of like that. That's definitely one
(08:01):
of the parts of UM playing the position that a
lot of people I feel like, Um, I feel like,
you know, it's just kind of if you've played it
and you know you're getting those stuff, you get it.
But UM, I feel like that's something that you know,
you can try to explain it, but it's you kind
of have to to play. It's a completely grass Yeah,
like they said, there's no experience like experience and that's
the truth. But you know, kind of take us through
(08:22):
that day, right. You know a lot of people see
y'all go on the field and warm up, turn the
game on, you know, twenty thirty minutes before it gets warm.
But the day is so much more than that, you know,
for a three thirty game for example, you know, when
you guys get to the stadium, you know, it just
kind of if you don't mind, breakdown that day a
little bit because it's the out of meetings and I
think people would actually find it fascinating what really happens
before the game. Yeah, all are from you know, from
(08:45):
Friday too. Whenever we play on Saturday. Our our days
are completely scheduled out. UM. You know it's not you know,
everything that we're going to and doing as a team,
UM is planned. UM there's meetings before the UM depending
on you know, type of game. But you know, like
you said, this afternoon game. UM, you have you know,
(09:05):
you have you have team meal. UM, you have a
little bit of time to UM. You know, you have
UM you know you have you have UM a little
bit of time to you know, to change a little
bit of time to Obviously it depends on UM. You
know where you're gonna go. You have UM, you know,
you have the church service to attend, um if you
can attend. So it's all really you know, it's all
(09:27):
planned out. You know, you eat, you come back, We
have a little, um, you know, brief little walk through
the hotel and then um you get to the bus
and even then you know, there's certain times specialists go out.
There are certain times that um, you know, kickers and
punning a certain time for the team to go out,
so everyone knows where they are that you know, there
are certain times people can be on the field before
all that's warm up. Certain times you're in the locker room. Um,
(09:48):
so um, you know it's really all accounted for it.
It's like not like and that was kind of an
adjustment for me going to college. Um and depending on what. Um,
you know that we're kind of a little bit like
that at Modern Day. But the first high school went
she was a little bit more like, hey, like you know,
games of seven, Um, you get out of like you know,
you get out it, you know, to whatever, like you know,
(10:10):
just make sure you're in the locker of my fight
theory um and um, you know. And then when I
went to may Day, it was a little more planned down.
And then here you know, obviously it counts for more
time when you spend the night at the hotel, so
you have everything is already on on you know, you
know exactly what times you have to be at it's
already communicated. And you know we we have the routine,
and that routine is um, you know, it helps us
(10:33):
as far as just us knowing what to expect, us
kind of creating that pregame routine the night before the
same thing allows you to kind of um get a
rhythm and and you know do the same thing each
and every week, which is is good. So well, the
night before and obviously you're in and out of meetings,
like you said, you know, are you playing the game
in your head? Are you going through different scenarios, are
you going through maybe different coverages, the different formations and
(10:54):
personnel that you guys have out there. You kind of
just take a little time to maybe put it out
of your mind because you spend so much thinking of it. Yeah, um,
I think you know, the night before, it's definitely, um,
you know, you're you're definitely, you know, you're definitely going
through just through the you know, the same certain stuff.
You know, you're definitely checking the same things you know, um,
you know, down the same eyes, crossing the ties, the
stuff that you know you do week by week. Um.
(11:17):
And then I think it's also I do think it's
important not just on you know, the night before right before,
but um, just doughout the week. I think it's important
to manage um and make sure that you you know,
you have a healthy kind of relationship with because sometimes
if you just you know, if you if you're if
you're studying one specific thing or if you're studying just
straight and you can get burned out, and also you
(11:38):
can kind of lose um, really the quality of the study,
and you can lose kind of um, you know, if
you you let certain stuff that aren't is big feel
bigger than they are. You know, you kind of have
to balance how you know, how you study, how you learn,
how you watch from and then um balance it with
making sure that you're able to be intensive, able to
not get burntality, able to not to to separate this
(12:00):
if you separate so um, you know, there's definitely a
balance that that goes into it as far making sure
obviously you count for everything and you account for but um,
making sure that you know you don't get burnt out,
you don't um spend too much time on something that um,
you know, kind of cloud your judgment. So it's kind
of a kind of gotta find a balance. What's your
favorite pregame meal food? I know guys like pasta. I
(12:21):
know guys that don't even eat I do, guys that
don't even just go in there and sit down. Hey, coach,
I'm here, I'm watching the highlight film. I'm ready to go.
What is Bryce young? If you do eat, what is
the go to for Bryce young. Yeah, we eat the
same thing. Everything different, you know, obviously same hotel for
their at home, but away different hotel. But it's the
same meal. Um. It's like there's there's if it's the
(12:43):
breakfast meal, I mean's the pregame meal before the game.
At breakfast is as steak. They have a steak. What else.
It's like there's like pasta, Um, they got like options,
but normally like all use some mistake, have some a's um,
and then like some fruit or somebody drink and the
same thing the night before. Um, it's like the night
(13:05):
before it's like mac and cheese steak. Yeah what is it? Yeah,
like match steak goes on you like same thing everything.
I'll get ice cream. They give you all ice cream
the night before they give you a little dessert. Yes god,
I don't really, I'm not. Yeah, I don't like too
so they from me. But um yeah, but um yeah,
(13:25):
there's either like desserts and stuff. Typically it's like I
think it might I don't know. I'm not a big
on like sweets, but I think they might switch that
out every a while. I haven't checked. I would bet
I would bet they would. I know the lineman, I'll
ask one that old linement. I know they know probably
by heart. They probably doesn't make you by heart, but
you know bryce too, you know, for night games, for
later games, because you know, the three thirty games probably
(13:45):
getting out there pretty early. Obviously, you know y'all don't
play a lot of noon games, but if you did,
you'll be getting there really early. But do you during
the night games when you've got time, I say times
a little bit of breaktime that you have, are you
watching other games around the country? You know, are you
looking at other SEC team so you're just kind of
letting your mind go and just watching the football? Kind
of How do you operate like that? Um? Yeah, I
mean I think up to a certain point, like there's
(14:07):
a certain kind of cut off point of like all right,
like it's it's time to play. It's not just when
you step on the field, but before there's kind of
a cut off point of like you know, you know,
my phone's completely off my um you know you're not
watching anything if you know, when screens go by, you're
not paying attention. There's kind of a cut off point
where it's all you know, you have to be completely
(14:28):
locked in. Um. But kind of during the day if
it's to say it's, like I said, it's a night game.
Maybe if we have a break, you might have it
on in the background. Um. And then sometimes even if
you have like a little longer a break, and um,
you know you might yeah, you might like watch it.
Just just watch a game if you're trying to rest
before and you know you don't want you know, you
don't want to be actively do or anything you want
(14:49):
to you know, make sure that you're you're you're getting
rest and you're not moving too much before a game.
So it all depends on the timing. It all depends
on But typically I'm not like a lot of times
and you know, we haven't had we only had that
one night game, right, you know as of now. So
like I kept, you know, the two thirty games. I
keep like when I'm finishing and be like, so who
played it? They like just check ESPN and be like,
(15:12):
oh wow, Like I didn't even know they played. I
Oh wow, this is score. So like, um, like recently
because of that, I haven't seen like and I'm so
bad with that stuff, Like I like I won't even
know who's playing who until after the game's over, and
I'll just be like, oh, who knew they're Like, I
didn't know they're playing. But it's just you know, with
school football, like it's pretty time consuming, so you know,
(15:34):
there's a lot of for us to us to focus on.
You know, what music are you listening to before the game?
You listen to music. I do listen to music. You
listen to bro I could guess, I bet, I could guess.
Go ahead, what's what's it? Guess? He's in there. Okay,
look I'm im I hit one of them. I'm getting out.
That's a win. Who It all depends um like some games,
(15:55):
like I don't have like a specific like playlist. It
all depends on I feel like something. I feel like.
It depends on kind of like the energy I'm going for,
Like I have a more like the playlist. It's some
more like and sometimes like I feel like that's the
energy that I need, like like at the moment just
to warm ups and then probably more consistently it's more
like a more like it's it's still right like still hipop.
(16:17):
It's more like a chill playlist, so like Drake like
J cole Um like stuff like that, like stuff around
that ye like uh, that's like probably more frequent, like
most of the time. It's probably that every once in
a while, I feel like I need just like I
feel like I need to like supplement maybe some like
some higher maybe even like some like I have, like
I definitely have like listen to some SIMP songs pretty
(16:40):
game before definitely, But I don't have like a strip
like I got you like it's like default is probably
like more Drake J. Cole like like chill like take
care of Drake like chill like like type of Drake before. Um,
that's like typical. But like I said, sometimes I'm like,
all right, I might need something like a little more
(17:00):
I got like the more like you know, like the
more like be like you know, the more like Yeah,
for sure, it hits a little harder, it hits a
little different. And then something that I've been where it's
like now, actually I just want to listen to like yes,
like same music before you games. Like No, man, that's
that's real though, that's real. I appreciate you sharing that,
and you know, Bryce being the quarterback Alabama. Mean, you
(17:22):
talked about this before on the podcast. Man, you know
a lot of people you know, like, man, that's so
much pressure, so much pressure and your personality is really
not like that. But I know you're smart enough to
know that you're still improving, that there's stuff that you
can learn every day. Who do you reach out to
for advice? I mean, is it? Is it high school coaches?
Is that former players? Is it just kind of who
do you turn to when you want to when you
(17:42):
want to ask the question you maybe want to answer
something that's on your mind? You know, honestly, Um, you know,
when it comes to like xus and o's obviously it's
a lot with like, you know, a lot with the coaches. Yeah, Honestly,
when it comes to stuff outside of that, I've learned
that my teammates are actually great resources to, you know,
with dealing with stuff is going on and just just
gauging other people's mindsets, kind of balancing ideas of other people.
(18:04):
I've learning my teammates are actually really reliable sources for that. Um,
you know, these are guys that you know, it's literally
people who aren't and there's no one who's in a
more similar situation playing the same team. And then you know,
there's a lot of guys here that have been at this,
you know, in the program at the school a lot
longer than me, so um, me still get a chance
to learn from them, um, balancing certain things that they've seen,
(18:26):
and kind of trying to just you know, pick their
brains as far as you know, whatever it may be.
But I'm feeling something, you know, I'm you know, just
my motion, whatever it may be. Like, UM, just just
talking to you know, different people on the team and
kind of getting to feel for them. Me trying to um,
you know, you know again seeing how how they deal
(18:47):
with certain stuff, seeing how they feel about certain stuff.
So honestly, a lot of times, UM, just having conversations
with my teammates has been, um, you know, really beneficial
for me for sure, and again having that resource man
like you said, and having guys that played it. You
know that understand that I've seen it and have been
there speaking about guys that played it. You got to
watch Mac Jones go against Tom Brady the other night.
(19:07):
How cool is that? Knowing that that you're on the
spot that Mac was then before he had a chance
to go do that, and that you and I don't
want to put the car before the horse. You've got
a lot to do and a lot to accomplish, and
your team does as well. That's gotta be a cool feeling. Though.
We talked about a little bit last week, and I
thought it was pretty interesting what you have to say. Yeah, like,
first of all, it's just the emotion of just like
just just being like just feeling like a fan, like
(19:29):
just like wow, like it's crazy, like I know, that's
my boy. He's like it's crazy, like I'm a Sunday
night football He's playing against Tom Raiding like he's balling
like so so initially it's just like, you know, it's
it's fun to watch it, and you know, it's definitely humbling,
thinking like dang, like I've I got to I kind
of got to see what goes into that, and like
(19:49):
I'm trying now to kind of you know, I'm trying
now to kind of um, you know, to kind of
live you know, and and execute the way he hits.
So it's like, um, it's definitely humbling. But you know,
really more so, I don't even I haven't really even
thought about it, like oh wow, he's doing that, like
what Like it's more so just genuine like it's like
genuine happened. It's like dang, like like that's my guy,
(20:10):
Like my guys out like Sunday night, Like I'm watching
him against like Brady Books, and he's just like and
he's out there like balling, like doing and he's out
there doing this thing everyone could tell to like it's
not even because sometimes you can kind of like sometimes
there's a quarterback. You can see a quarterback and be like, oh, yeah,
like that that I see you, Like, oh are they messed?
Like all I feel that mistake and like or someone
(20:31):
make a good throw and then like you're like, oh yeah,
that was a good throw. And then you can hear
the announcers or you can hear like the public or
like other people you like, and people can just completely
miss it. But like also for him to get you know,
such a such a warm reception and people to actually
be appreciate and be able to recognize it too and
not just be like a subtle like you know, just
like people understand, but you know, everyone's really starting to understand,
(20:53):
you know, how how you know how good he is,
how good he's been performing, so how well he is
always been performing. Sorry, I don't think my dad grammar
grammar police said they're not my day. My dad got
me on that, but um, so it's it's honestly, it's
just it's just really exciting to see someone and and
(21:14):
you know you just like for me, it's just it's
happening like I'm rooting for someone to see them do well,
like it feels great. Yeah, And you know, bright time,
I'm gonna get back to the you know, before the
game and you're in there and you walk into your
locker and you see that Crimson jersey and and you know,
what does that mean to you? Like like person, when
you see it before you're about to put it on
and know that you get another chance to go out
(21:34):
and perform for the University of Alabama. Just what does
that mean to you? Really? I mean it means everything.
Just just knowing the weight that, like you said, putting
that Crimson jersey on and wearing the A memes, you know,
knowing that about the tradition, knowing the people who play
before us, knowing you know what we stand for. It
(21:56):
means you know, it means a lot. So every time
you put the years you know you can't. You know,
it's just really a minder knows it's humbling. It's a
reminder you know you're not You're not just putting the
jersey onto to mess around or you're not just like
every time you put the jersey on, you know, you
have you know, it's not just you you're playing for
you know, it's it's it's the people of the past.
(22:16):
It is the people, um who a route you know,
who are who are who are part of the organization,
part of the part of the school. People are rooting
for the school. So it's it's it's not definitely not
something I take lightly at all. Yeah, Bryson, And speaking
about not taking lightly, you know, you get one win,
the big one against Soul Miss SEC College Football Division
one levels, how it is, you've got another big one
(22:37):
against saying them and and obviously the keys of the game,
there's some that say the same and there's some that
differ obviously depending on what you get. What's one that
that you can kind of point to for this game
against an A and M team that is talented, that's
very talented, has a lot of talented guys on defense,
it should be a great challenge for you guys, and
I know it's one you want, ye you know, it's
a really really good team. I'm going, you know, going
(22:59):
to a really high environment UM, you know me obviously
I'm watching film on the defense. But um, you know
it's a really really good defense. Um, you know, top
to bottom, a lot of really good players, a really
good schemes. So again we know that. Um you know,
like you said, it's not something you tell lightly for
us here in that sec you know, you start playing,
you start playing in conference, especially playing Division. You know,
(23:21):
you know week to week you have to bring your
best every single game. You have to prepare. And we
know that again we're going to play a really really
good team. Um you know we're going to a really
difficult place to play, so we know we have to
we have to work extremely hard. We have to lock
in every day. Um you know we have to. We
have to do everything we can during the week. We
have to, um, you know, really lock in it. We
(23:42):
know it's a tough sounds ahead of us, So um,
you know we have to do everything we can so
we can execute over the weekend. Yeah, I got one
more for your brights and we're gonna wrap this thing up.
You know against forty, you guys jumped out to the lead,
held on big victory down there. Give you guys a
lot of confidence against all miss. It seemed like you
guys really wanted to put the dagger in. Is that's
something you'll focused on on offense? Uh, just kind of
(24:02):
finishing it because to me, the way you guys were
grinding it on the ground, the way you guys were together,
it's like it really never stopped throughout the game, and
you all seem really connected throughout the whole game. Was
that an emphasis? Yeah, that that that's always an emphasis
with without a member football to finish and and you know,
to to finish it all four quarters and and and honestly,
we felt like
