Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume Brilliant Dry by Bryce Young. You see the
elusiveness would be a Bryce right, never hurting doesn't have
(00:26):
happy f sex of fires here, Awareness, understanding, recognition, awareness, understanding, recognition,
that kid is good, that kid is good, that kid
is good. Hey, what's up everybody? Welcome to another edition
(00:48):
of the Bryce Young Podcast. I'm Jay Crane from The
Jay Boys Show. But let me go ahead and bring
in QB one at the University of Alabama, Mr Bryce Young. Bryce,
what's up? Man? What's up? How you doing doing good?
It's it's gonna be chopping it up with you again.
And I want to dive right in, man, I want
to get right to it. You guys coming off and
win against MIMISSIPI stayed after the loss, a tough one
(01:08):
at A and m and a tough environment. Just talk
to me in the audience about, you know, the feeling
after getting back on the winning track, you know, putting
in the work that week, which we're going to dive into.
But how did you feel at the end of the game. Yeah,
I think it was really good for us to try
to get back on our track, for us to really
prove to ourselves, Um, what we're capable of. Um, you know,
there's since we've been able to watch the tape, there's
definitely stuff we can still improve on and still want
(01:30):
to get better at. But UM, I think it was
a lot more urgency during the week. I think we
held ourselves so a lot higher standard practice better and
now really, UM, the test for us is to keep
that and maintain that and for to not UM. You know,
we had our wake up calling for us to understand
what it takes and UM, I think during the week
we did that, um, you know, leading up to the
(01:51):
game this past weekend. But it's on us now to
continue that, to keep pushing and making sure that we're
continuing to do it. Yeah, and and speaking about you
know last week, being a leader on the team, being
the quarterback of position, everybody looks to a guy that
touches the ball every time. And I know you'll have
a leadership counsel and and there's a lot of guys
are able to lead. It seems like the best teams
are always the ones that can police themselves. You guys
(02:12):
seemed to get it back together this week, and it
seemed to be a lot of it was player lead,
and that's how you know that you've got a good
culture in a good situation. Can you just talk about
being in a situation where as leaders of the team,
you guys, voice is not only heard, but it's acted upon.
Because that's what I saw on the field Saturday. Yeah,
that's that's that's definitely a big point of emphasis for us,
and UM coach saman has always talked us about how
(02:33):
his best teams have had the best leadership groups, and um,
you know how things always go better. Um, you know
when it's the players, they can police themselves and can
you know, get on each other. So, UM, you know,
as a leadership group, that that's something that we're you know,
we're actively working on. We we take pride in and
making sure that we can you know, we hold ourselves,
we hold our teammates, We hold everyone in account books
with them, you know, to the standard we set. So
(02:55):
you know, all that comes with work and all that
comes with um, you know, you know, building with your teammates.
So again, that that's something as a team that we're
still um, you know, we're still working on. We're still
um you know, actively pushing every day for sure, and
and kind of take us you know, every I know
there's different messages every week, and you're working on little things,
always trying to improve. But how much you know more?
(03:17):
I think, guess, not in detail, but is the focus
coming after a loss? We're all human beings. It's a
natural human condition. But coming off of a loss, are
the practices do you feel like, you know, more intense
or maybe even more locked in because everybody sees the
score and kind of reacts to it. Just can you
talk about how that week is different maybe than other weeks?
I think, Um, I think that's really a part of
(03:39):
what we realized was the issue was that, UM, we
felt as if there was a difference in in practice
and it's going really for us was you know, our
our goal is for you know, not regardless of you know,
the circumstances, rank or team we're playing like that doesn't
shouldn't dictate how we work, how we practice, how we
how we showed to the facility, And I think that
was one of the big things that we um, you know,
(04:00):
that we were that we we talked about that, we
mentioned that, we we acknowledged and UM that we're still
you know, working on as far as UM that that's
really the you know, it's it's human nature. But that's
what you're fighting against every day, is trying to make
sure that you know, you don't you don't fall back,
you know, whether it's higher or low, you don't get
too comfortable, too uncomfortable. You just, um, you know, we
(04:21):
try to have that stand, that consistency. And I felt like, um,
you know, I feel like it's a team. That's something
that you know now, especially that that we're we're stressing
and we kind of recognize that we weren't you know,
we weren't respecting um wanning and we weren't respecting that standard.
Is something that we're you know, we're getting back to
what was, you know, and you're looking at a great point.
(04:41):
You talk about not getting complacent. We always fight complacency.
Whether you're the quarterback at Alabama or whether you're working uh,
you know, at the grocery store or whatever. We all
fight complacency. But it's funny, you know, in in Tennessee
coming up this week, and we know how big that
ribbalry is and I don't want to jump ahead too much, Bryce,
but look in the next week after that, you gotta
buy week. And you know a lot of people think, oh,
it's the bye week. You know, you can relax, you
(05:03):
can relax. What does the bye week mean to you?
Kind of? And like I said, I don't want to
get too far ahead, but as a quarterback, being able
to go back and watch even more film, being able
to self scout even more kind of, what does the
bye week mean to you? Yeah, that's funny. I yeah,
I haven't even you know, I haven't even thought thought
about it at all. We've We've definitely been we've been
all in. This is a big game for us. Peak
(05:23):
Robberty game means a lot. We've been all in it, um,
you know, you know, all in for Tennessee and making
sure that we do we have to to do during
the week the execute, So to be honest with you,
I haven't even really really thought of it obviously. You know. Um,
whatever the codes have us doing, you know during that
week is is you know, it's going to be planning
and we're gonna retargeting specific things to work on and
get better. But um, I haven't even really really thought
(05:46):
about that. Um. You know, again, this is a big
game for us. This is a you know, it's a
rivalry game. This means a lot to you know to everyone. Um,
so yeah, I actually haven't even really really thought too
much about um, you know after this week, taking it
one snap at a time. That's that's how it's gotta be.
But you know, too bright, So I gotta ask you, what,
when you're playing in a place like Alabama, where every
(06:07):
team you play is gonna get up and and you're
gonna get the best punch from everybody, is that one
of the most fun challenges to embrace is that every week,
regardless of who it is, you're playing in a great conference.
Everybody gets up to playing big games, and you play Alabama,
it's a big game. I know that's something that you
guys probably enjoy over there. Yeah, that that's something that
you know, we you know that that that's really a
(06:29):
decision you make when you decide to come out with them.
You understand that. You know that targets on your back
and always will be. You understand um, you know, you
understand the circumstance you're going into, you understand the expectation
to standard. So it's really a big part of really
just you know, when you choose an decide to go
to Alabama, you understand you can't you know, you're playing.
When you're playing the sec um, you know, again you're
(06:52):
just holding yourself at that standing. You understand that you know,
there's no light games, there's no off games. Um, there's
no game you can you can bypass. You know, you
know you have to you know, you have to prepare,
bring your all, bring your best, and and do all
that you have to do for each game. So that
that's definitely something that you know, we we embody and
it's really something that you know and understand from the
get go, and too, Man, I gotta ask you, it's
(07:13):
gotta be fun, you know when I watch you, whether
it's you know, extending a play from the pocket, extending
a play outside the pocket, being able to find the
type wide receivers that you guys have. I mean, you know,
Jamison Jamie is about as fast as I've ever seen
Bryance that when he hit the corner with the other day,
it's gotta be fun to be able to just hit
that dig and watch him do his thing. Just talk
about it. Just how much fun it is playing with
the group that you guys have because y'all feed off
(07:34):
each other and you're just you know, you're one throw
away from a big play, one runaway from a big play.
It's gotta be fun to operate in the in that room. Yeah. Yeah,
we have a bunch of weapons. You know, we have
a bunch of weapons. Um you know throughout our entire offense, receivers,
tight ends, running back, so you know, everyone's explosive and
um yeah, like you said, that makes my job a
(07:55):
lot easier getting you know, being able to just um
you know it really actually, you know, you really emphasize
that a lot, making sure that you're you're getting the
ball to players in space, trying to give them a
throw to where they can they can they can operate
and make plays after the kiss because we have guys
that are special and um, you know, it definitely makes
my job a lot easier, a lot more fun, um
you know. And I'm I'm lucky to have the teammates
(08:17):
I have to where um you know, for me, I'm
just the job is to find people in spacing here
on the ball, and um, you know, luckily I'm surrounded
by guys who can do the rest and make those
big plays. Yeah. You do it pretty well yourself, though,
Dish from the ball out man. You you as they say,
you play a pretty good point guard man. But you know,
we we always talk about on the field stuff, right,
So I want to get off the field for a second.
(08:37):
You know, we all go through stuff in our lives
and have moments that kind of shape us. What is
one moment, you know, off the field, that that you
can look back at that you want to share with us,
that's impacted the way you live today. Yeah, that's that's
a good question. I'd say, UM, got a few of them. Yeah, yeah,
you know, there's definitely a few. But honestly, I feel
like a lot of it came from you know, they're
(09:00):
a lot of family stuff and a lot of moments
just you know, with my parents and stuff like that.
But um, although it was at the feel steal in sports, Like, honestly,
I feel like there's just a lot of UM. I
used to go to like summer camp for basketball. Um,
Like you know, my parents would be working, so um,
like the dropped me off at this. I go to
like the same basketball camp like pretty much every summer. Um.
(09:21):
And like, honestly, actually it's it's weird. I haven't really
thought about too much, but now that I like I'm
referencing it, Um, I feel like that. It really helped
me as far as like just understanding like like building
a routine, kind of staying at something. It was one
of those camps where you got like you were there
from like eight to five, like you know, like your
parents are like y'all got him, have fun, have fun. Yeah,
Like it was one of those And honestly, like now
(09:43):
I think about it, you know, actually, you know, there's
a lot of like correlation between stuff doing that and
stuff I do now as far as they're just being
being scheduled, being a routine, understanding kind of just the
importance of like a daily guard and staying at something
and and and improving and trying to find some of
them prove on these day and um, honestly, you know,
even though it's in sports like that, stuff like that, Um,
(10:05):
I was doing that from like the young age, um,
you know, in different camps but in different settings, And
like I feel like that really really helped me and
kind of help me roll over to kind of learn
and know some of stuff I know now. Yeah, man,
and I feel you on that. The coaching world is
like that too, But I gotta ask you on that point.
You know, you're used to doing the routine. Obviously being
in the position you're in, you know, it's very sequential
(10:27):
what you do and consequential what you do when you
do it trying to manage time. But the few days
that you do have off and I know, not right now,
I mean that's not even a thought. Do you ever
just sit there and if it's not planning, go okay,
like what what am I gonna do today? Like I don't,
I don't really know because I'm like that if I
don't have something plan I'll sit around here and be
like all right, well when's the next game on or something?
That's that's kind of how I roll. Yeah, I haven't
(10:48):
had one of those days, and you know, but you
know those are like that's like my favorite type of day.
Like you could have a day where you could sit
back and be like like, I don't know, like I
don't know from doing today the responsibilities the day man, Yeah,
for sure exactly Like normally Yeah, normally I don't really
Normally I literally just sit down and just and chill
like where I'm ad Like I literally just I can
(11:12):
just enjoy doing nothing, like like I don't really get
those very often. So when I do, most of its
half build them by doing nothing. Do you ever get
on the game? Yeah yeah, I haven't been able to
play during the season, but yeah yeah, I'll be on
like two K. That's that's all. That's really all I play.
Who do you run with? And why is it the Lakers?
(11:33):
Every time? I just feel like you're going like, I
don't play like, I don't play like a quickly I'll
play like, I'll play like, i'll play, I'll play part,
I stop playing part. Probably play like pro am and Rick, Yeah,
my teammates, but like with with with my teammates for
the most part, like we were playing before a season,
we're playing. We're playing pro am like we're playing prom
all the time. You know. Obviously the season comes around
(11:54):
having we talk to who took so much trash? Brice?
You know, there's always that guy when you play with
that always talks so much trash And then you play
them and you're like, man, you're not good what you said,
or just they are, but they talked too much trash. Yeah, well,
like pretty much, we'll all play together, like we'll all play,
we'll all play on the same y'all squat up exactly
like that, right, we all play together and we all
(12:16):
but like trying to think, like really like Kyrie, He's
he gets pretty intermediate like Kyrie. You know, I coach
Kyrie Afford, Scott, Kyrie Jackson. Yeah, Kyrie. Next time you
see him asking, I know Kyrie talks, I know talks
get out the game. He'll talk. Um who else talks?
(12:38):
C O Loki talks a little bit. He like he's
sleep with it like c O. When he's on the game,
Like he'll be subtle, like he'll he'll get his little
jacks in against whoever we're playing. Yeah, but I definitely
miss like I haven't played the new too. I have
time to like grind and build on K yet. But um,
like yeah, all the way up until season we used
to be we used to be on the game. Yeah,
(12:59):
you're playing that re okay right now, you got that.
That's that's you're playing the real life thing. But you know,
two brides being from California, and you know, last time
we got on here, we kind of talked about, you know,
you choosing to come to Alabama and but if there
was one thing and I got an idea what it
would be, but I don't want to jump the sharks.
There's one thing you could bring from California and put
in Alabama. I know you love Tesca loose. Then I'll
(13:20):
stay Alabama and all that. But there's one thing. What
is it? And I think I know what it is,
but I'm probably wrong. You probably know. I I gotta go.
I gotta go with a nice little uh. I gotta
go with a nice little sushi spot, probably, and I
go with it with a nice legit legit yeah, like
a like a you know, like a legit like straight
(13:41):
like yeah, a nice little like straight sushi spot I
was saying, And like that would that would probably that
or like I need to say that, or or a
sneak I say, or a sneaker store that or store
one of those two all right, yeah, one of those
two that would be I would improve my quality, like
(14:02):
just a little bit. What do you what's your go
to sushi rolls there? When you go back home? You're like,
I gotta get this. It's a good question. Um, you
know not. It really just depends on you know what,
depends on the day, pends on the move, It survies
what you're telling exactly. Yeah, Like I like I like
like real like I like seeing me I like suit rolls,
(14:23):
like sus like all that, like the year I like
all that. So you know, it depends on like you know,
what's fresh with what guys so like. But um, yeah,
it depends. But I'll eat like I like, oh like
I love sushi as my favorite food. So I'm with you.
I'm with you. I go crab roll, man, that's guy.
I'm kind of you know, old school. I'm kind of
old school with you. You You know, I'm not out here
(14:43):
trying to take a bunch of chances, you know what
I'm saying. Yeah, I know it is what it is.
But you know you're talking about summer camp basketball earlier.
Obviously know you're a stud on the football field. But
if you had to pick another sport to play, which one,
which would it be? I think I know what it is.
But yeah, for sure I'd be hooping right now. You
a few ranches, you know, if if I had had
(15:05):
a few moranches, you feel me, and I'd be I
might be hooping. Now. You'll be running point or you
run the two, and I'm on the point. On the point.
Of course, I never had a choice, you know. Yeah,
you'll always have to always have to deliver, man, Like
Amazon always have to deliver. But so, what what is
this about basketball that that you that you enjoy if
if like I said, if you had to go to
(15:25):
secondary sport, what is about it the stands out to you.
I mean, I just I grew up with the game
like I've always I've always I've always played basketball, um
like literally, and so I got to college or I
probably say like probably choices and high school might have
caught up like, um like around that time, I played more,
um basketball than I played football. So I always grew
(15:47):
up around a game. I always grew up the same thing,
always going to work out tournaments on the weekends, like um, like,
I I've always been around it, and I just always
my dad, Um, both my parents like basketball. So I
always watch the game with damn my whole family. Um
you know, like we we all you know, we've all
like watching games every Christmas all that. So I really
(16:09):
just grown up with it, and you know, it's it's
it's fun to like I really like. The one thing
I really like about like basketball, you can play like
football is a very like you can't casually play football.
That's exactly right. I don't recommend it either, exactly like
like you can't, like when you need a bunch of people,
like if you want to actually play football, like obviously
there's a lot of time and like basketball, like I
(16:30):
could go shoot like you can't. I can't go through
to myself basketball you can go shoot, like you can
go play with you play five like you can you
cant team played like it's a lot more like coming
it too to make happens. So I always live basketball. Yeah,
it's a lot easier to play one on one in
basketball than it is on than it is in football.
I don't recommend. Yeah, it's gonna put the pads on
you carry. I'm just gonna hit you the whole time.
(16:51):
It sounds like exactly no. But all right to speaking
of basketball, know you're a Lakers fan. It's getting to
that time, right about now, right, it's about that time.
Give me a prediction on how you feel about the
LA show, how they're gonna do the show. I'm I'm
on board. You know, I'm not yourself. I took a
little convincing. I didn't see I didn't really see the vision,
(17:13):
but I'm over it. I guess we don't got a vision.
We just we was picking people up we're signing people young, old,
We're just getting a collection of talent. And you know,
you know, Rob, he got it. You know I don't.
That's why, you know, that's why I'm not a GM.
You know, he I didn't. I didn't really see the vision. Um,
but we got Brown, we got a D. So I
feel like we don't make it work. Um, you know, so,
(17:35):
so I gotta I got right with my guys. Um
I got you know, I got I got the Lakers wherever. Whatever.
You know. It took me a minute, but I'm done
over analyzing it. I'm don't think it's your just we
got a lot of guys. They're all good. It's all
gonna work. So so the matter of convincing give us
a matter of when not if. It just took some
time to like get you over to Yeah. Yeah. I
was like at a certain point I had to like
(17:56):
for like, I was pull the fan card. I gotta
pull the fan card man exactly. Me and my dad
talked basketball the time, and he was a little bit
more of a fan of like the additions, and I
was And I was like like, for a second, I
was like, I don't like do are we like? But
I've let all that, put all that to the side,
you know, like as recording night tonight. So it's like
(18:17):
like I'm I'm done. I'm just completely bought and it's
gonna work. I don't know how, but it's going to.
Like I'm just respect to me, blind faith, that's true.
Fanom always been a Lakers fan too, right from from
from day one? Was it a family thing? Everybody in
the families a Lakers fan? Or wasn't somebody was, you know,
a Clippers fan? You know, God forbid the Clippers fan.
I didn't trying to sell that out there, but yeah,
(18:37):
I mean we got we got weirdos in the family.
I don't know where, but like, yeah, but I've always
been my parents Laker fans, So I've always been for sure,
always been a Laker fan. Never Weaver like, so we
got some you know, I can't speak for everyone in
the entire but I always been Laker fans. So most
of us are there. What's the team you disliked about?
(18:57):
The Warriors? Is the other team? You just who's the
team you're just you're not a huge fan of Let's
put it that way. Oh, I respect rest Larry Bird
was nasty though Bird was nice though, Yeah, yeah, you know,
as the guy that delivers the ball man then old
Larry Bird high Like first time I watched him, I
was like they were doing that back then. Yeah, you know,
(19:19):
I respect, I respect the hate. Right, that's true, That's true,
that's true. Rivalry right there, Lakers Celtics is still a lot.
But all right, before we rolling out of here, No,
you've got a lot going on, and I'm gonna I'm
gonna keep it Lakers centric here. Do you see yourself
more as Lebron a d Are the wild Witch, Russell Westbrook?
(19:41):
Which which which one? Man? I'm I'm I can't even
like I'm pee myself as either of them. If I like,
I'm more of a step type of guy, for keeping,
why do you love Step? You love I'm a step guy.
I'm a step guy. So I mean, I I think
I can't. I don't, right, I have very like, very
(20:01):
well organistrated opinions about Lebron and you let me know
it maybe for another time, because I need like time six.
We can dive in that later, we can. We can
stay down for a rainy day, put it in the
stocking for Christmas morning. But I'm definitely a Lebron fan,
and I love Lebron. I definitely love He's a Laker,
so um, Lebron, I'm really like a d Russ's um.
(20:23):
Now I guess love for us. He's grown. Yeah, yeah,
but I'm Stephen stuff is like being my favorite player,
so so I'm more of like it. You know, I'm
more of a more of a step especially nowadays, if
I'm playing like I'm you know, I'm like, I'm a fool.
I'm not. I'm not trying to like really like who
like I used to, So all I do is run
(20:43):
around and shoot threes. If I'm playing nowadays, anyways, it
sounds like stuff. Yeah, that's that steps back. But now
that's that's a great question. I was I was gonna
go a little bit Westbrook, because you can do it all,
you know what I'm saying, Not that you know, Westbrook
at the end of the day just wants to take
it to the rack. And Duncan. I don't think that's
any secret. But he conditioned when he has to, and
he's man, that man's got so many triples. Respect for
(21:04):
his game though, like and like he does. He's done
some of the crazy stuff and you know he's it's
like he he killed a triple double. I mean the
he killed you know the amount of double doles he has.
He's done it in this like quickly like it's no,
he's he's uh do its triple doubles like the stuff
you do. I have crazy respect for it. I just
that's just yeah, no. But I respect his game a
lot though, for sure, for sure. I mean he woke
(21:26):
up and chus violence every time he goes to the rack.
I gotta respect it. But Bryce man, do that. This
has been a lot of fun. I know you're excited
about the game this weekend, last one before I let
you go. How excited do you about getting home big
time robbery game back in Bryant, Denny. I know you
guys are juiced and ready to go. You know this
is this is is super exciting for for us. You know,
it's definitely a big one. Again, this is a rivalry game.
(21:48):
It's it's homecoming, it's it's home um you know night games.
So again, this means you know, us playing Tennessee arrivally
means a lot to leans, a lot to to everyone involved,
means a lot to us. So um and and it's
against a really good team, so we know again we
have to you know, we're really stressing this week and
trying to keep that standard and and and know that
(22:08):
we have to prepare really well so we can execute.
But you know, we're It's definitely exciting game for us,
Another big one under the lights in Brian Denny. Heck,
you may win homecoming King. You never know. It could
