Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume. All Right, football season is officially back. It
was a classic big sandwich day. I've already down won
a couple more to go. So Ohio State at home
holds off Texas already dominates the entire game. And the

(00:21):
first thing that really jumped out to me is that
last year Ohio State used Chip Kelly. So they bring
in an NFL guy who'd had success at college but
really knew the NFL game a different, more sophisticated level
of football. Ryan Day gives him the offense, and by
the time they got to that playoff, you're just watching

(00:44):
a pretty slick offense with obviously Ohio State talent. So
now they bring in Matt Patricia. Well, defensive coordinators in
the NFL faced the world's best quarterbacks, and whereas in
college football, a defensive coordinator's job has stopped the run
because you don't face a lot of world class quarterbacks.

(01:05):
Even the great college quarterbacks come into the NFL and
have to clean up and speed up their game. You're
seeing that, you know, with Caleb Williams in Chicago, But
in the NFL, you've got to figure out how to
stop to pass. You're facing the homes and you know,
the best quarterbacks in the world and Lamar and Josh
Allen and Joe Burrow. You have to be able to

(01:25):
stop the pass. So Matt Patricia is throwing stuff at
Arch Manning, and you know, stuff arch Manning I'm sure
he didn't see in practice. I mean, Matt Patricia may
have not worked as a Detroit Lions head coach or
as an offensive coordinator for that year in New England.
He's a brilliant defensive coordinator. Literally a rocket scientist. So
never forget what Bill Belichick did to Sam Darnold the

(01:48):
first five or six times he faced him. It looked
like Donald did not know how to play football. So
Arch Manning, you know, especially in the first three quarters,
three and a half quarters, he was seeing things. He
didn't look comfortable. I mean, he just he he didn't
set and throw. He was completely off. It looked like

(02:09):
he just hadn't practiced. Well, this is what a Matt
Patricia can do. This is what a Belichick did to
I mean, what was Belichick's record against first and second
year quarterbacks in the NFL. I mean, I don't even
know what it is. He won like ninety percent. Yet
Josh Allen you're three, four, five, six, Josh Allen, Mahalmes, Burrow,
Matt Stafford. You know they've seen all the tricks. You're

(02:31):
not going to throw anything at them an older veteran
NFL quarterback or a superstar quarterback by the time they've got,
you know, a couple years under their belt. You know,
Belichick is is it can't can't dent their super powers.
But Matt Patricia against arch Manning or a Matt Patricia
or Bill Belichick against rookie quarterbacks in the NFL, they

(02:52):
can look horrible. And so let's be honest. Arch Manning
first game in Columbus, you know half of that Ohio
State defense, four or five of those guys are in
the NFL next year. The other five or six are
in the NFL of the following year. So that's a
tough opening act. You can go back to Joe Burrow's
first year at LSU. He completed fifty seven percent of

(03:15):
his throws. You know, Matt Stafford sophomore year at Georgia,
with all those Georgia athletes, is completeing fifty five percent
of his throws. So arch Manning looked lost. It's Ohio State,
It's Columbus. I didn't think it would look like that,
and it wasn't until the end of the game where
he made a couple of really nice throws down the field.
That whole shot up the left side against cover two

(03:37):
was great, But then he followed it up with back
to back really bad throws off to the right, easy
layup throws, and he missed him so his feet weren't right,
he wasn't right, disoriented, and Ohio State, listen, there there
are greater failures in life than losing to the Buckeye

(03:58):
in Columbus in your first time start in college football.
So I think arch Manning will probably win double digit
games this year. With a young offensive line, four new
starters in front of him, I think eventually he's going
to be fine. But he looked lost today. He made
you know, I don't think he had a really really
good throw until I thought it was like Joel Klatt

(04:21):
said it, and he was right. It was his best
pitching catch of the day. Was like I think late
third quarter and Ohio State, by the way, I only
had a couple of hundred yards on offense, but I
think what Ohio State saw early in this game, I
mean they saw it. By the second or third series,
they saw arch was uncomfortable. Ryan Day looked at arch
Manning and said, we're just not going to beat ourselves.

(04:44):
We'll throw the ball down the field a couple of times,
take some big swings. But Ohio State, I think over
the course of the game, very early, Ohio State decided
let's not take any big risks here. Our quarterback Julian
slam And is comfortable. He's got good protection, he's got
a more experienced offensive line, he's got great receivers. Do

(05:07):
the Brian hartlines recruiting. But I think Ohio State may
have adjusted by their second or third series and said
let's just not turn it over lay some field position football.
Arch Manning is really really uncomfortable. I mean we're not
even at the game, we're watching it on TV, and
you could tell his discomfort. So imagine Ryan Day sitting

(05:28):
thirty feet from arch Manning, watching his feet, watching his tempo,
and just saying, guys, let's go conservative here. So I
thought text, I thought this was actually gonna be kind
of a wild second half. I mean, listen, you don't
get joint practices in college. You don't get preseason games
in college football. So I figured the first half would

(05:49):
be low scoring, feeling out like a prize fight. First
couple of rounds, you're feeling it out. But I figured
there would be some scoring in the second half. And
I think Ohio State looked at the real game reality
and just said, let's play field position. Take a couple
of big shots. Arch arch is overwhelmed by what he's
seeing on the field. So I thought that touchdown arch

(06:11):
manning through in the end zone. I would have had
a hard time overturning that. I probably would have said,
all right, we're going to keep the play called as
it is to go either way. Call. I just needed
more definitive proof. So but Ohio State dominated this football game.
Forget the total yards, forget the score. Ohio State is
dominated the football game. And so onward for the buck. Guys.

(06:35):
Julian Sland's you know, all I'd seen is you know,
big game action was his best high school football games.
He's a good player. He made some really nice throws.
Now again, it's Ohio State receivers and Ohio State offensive linemen.
But I thought Julian Slan accounted for himself very well
in a big game. Didn't look nervous, look poised, and

(06:58):
can sling it. So I think Ohio it's going to be.
And we all thought Ohio State was a top four
or five team. Hey, I'm gonna watch Clemson tonight. Clemson
may very well be the best team. I do like
Clemson over LSU comfortably. I think they'll they'll win by
touchdown or more. I like Bama a couple of touchdowns
or more over Florida State. And I do like TCU

(07:20):
to beat Belichick. I'm not sure if I like the hook.
It's three and a half, but they return a seventeen
or eighteen starters Hoover, their quarterbacks is going to be
starting for the third year. Belichick's got forty new transfers.
That's absurd. I don't know how you look good in
game one, even though they're at home. So congrats to
the buck guys. Texas looked disoriented. You know, Sark can coach,
he can recruit, He brings juice to your program, big energy,

(07:43):
and so I've always liked Sark. I like Sark at
Washington his first couple of years at USC. You know,
he worked under Saban. He's a very very good coach.
He has in big games. Sometimes overthinks the room a
lot of different formations and motions and looks. I thought
they should have run Arch panning. I thought it was
pretty obvious by the second series that Arch was a

(08:05):
little lost, a little confused. He just didn't look comfortable
and confident throwing the ball downfield. And you know, again
you're talking Matt Patricia's coverages and Ohio State athletes. I mean, listen,
Texas was zero and two in the red zone. You
know you get a touchdown on that push push. Maybe
Arch plays with a bit more confidence. Maybe Ohio State

(08:27):
has to be more aggressive, but you know you're you're
zero and two in the red zone. I think Texas
fans are gonna are gonna they're gonna say Arch is bad.
But Sark now is one in eight against top six
teams at Texas, and I think this one. I know

(08:48):
Arch is the better headline, but Sark's gonna take some
bullets for this. It just and I like Sark, but
I thought in the end, in the last four quarter,
Arch was eight of fifteen, so the numbers looked a
little better. I think some of that is the coverage
has changed. Right when you've got a fourteen nothing lead.

(09:11):
But I think Sark's going to take a hit on this.
This is not just going to be arch Manning. I
was watching this game with friends as I wrap up
my summer vacation, and there's some Texas fans in the house,
and you know, there's an admiration for Sark's ability to
recruit and stack a roster, But in these big spots,

(09:33):
you get judged as a head coach. And I mean,
let's face it, before the National Championship, Ryan Day losing
to Michigan, loses a huge favorite to Michigan, then he
beats Tennessee. But I mean it felt like a one
or two week period where if Ryan would have lost
to Tennessee last year on the PLATFF, was he in trouble.
So you are judged differently based on how you perform

(09:55):
in these massive stages, and this was another clunker for
Sark on a massive regular season stage. I mean, I
can't remember a college football opener that I was more
jazzed about. I mean, I mean, we were sitting there
watching pregame shows for two hours and congratulations Delite Corso
a remarkable man and incredible career. And I love the

(10:17):
fact that Fox showed the headgear moment and ESPN allowed that.
That was really special. It was really special television. And
I think Corso is on a short list of the
most beloved football commentators of my life, and I thought
that was really cool of ESPN to allow it and

(10:38):
Fox to do it. So tip of the cap to
the management teams of both companies who allowed all of
us to see it. Hey, listen, I want to talk
for a couple of minutes about the Micah Parsons trade.
You know, everybody's going to weigh in on you know
who won the trade. Here's what we've known about Jerry Jones,
the Cowboys owner, in his career. He's a deal maker.

(11:02):
What can't the Cowboys do the last two years make deals? Why?
Because they have no flexibility. That's why I kept saying,
if you're going to pay Dak what you're paying them,
and I wouldn't. If you're going to pay Ceedee Lamb
big money, I would have. If you pay Micah big money,
you don't have flexibility. Before that deal, they couldn't pay
eight million dollars for the Derek Henry potential acquisition. Remember

(11:25):
in free agency, we were screaming, you have the worst
running back room in the league. Go sign Dereck Henry
Ravens did. They had no flexibility last two years in
free agency, So moving Micah is not just about getting
Kenny Clark good run stopper thirty, but good run stopper
or the first round picks that gives you a lot
of flexibility. But now you're going to have the ability

(11:47):
to make more deals. It feels like Dallas has been
trapped for two years and now they're not. I mean,
I would use those I mean, just think about this.
This draft is so good for Dallas having two first
round picks. And I know it's you know, a Green
Bay pick is going to probably be lower first round.
But the reality is, let's say a guy like you know,
Sam Levitt, or there's some other quarterback that pops in

(12:11):
college football this year. Cadeklubnick's going to go high, Drew
Aller's going to go high, Arch Manning is still going
to have great games, who knows, But maybe a Sam
Levitt Arizona State. I mean, Dallas may get their quarterback
if they have the ninth, tenth or eleventh pick in
the draft without giving up that other first round pick.
Then you can go draft your next Michael Parsons. So

(12:33):
I think Dallas did it. I mean, they offered him
forty and he got like forty seven. It's not like
Dallas didn't want him, but they don't have any flexibility.
Green Bay didn't need flexibility. They feel they have their quarterback.
What they need in that division with Kevin O'Connell, Ben
Johnson now Dan Campbell in the Lions O line amor

(12:54):
on Saint Brown Gibbs. They need a playmaker on defense.
They need a pass rusher in green Bay now in
a very offensive leaning division. Green Bay's always got offense.
They've always scored with Matt Lafleur. When's the last time
they had a game wrecker on defense? You know, Reggie White.
So I mean they wanted to go out and just say,
hey man, we're gonna we're gonna go buy him and listen.
Micah creates pressure. It's not that I think he's overrated,

(13:20):
but I would have moved off Micah a year ago.
But I'll defend Dallas. Dallas looked at last year's draft
potentially and said, let's see if we can get a
deal done with Micah. We don't love the draft. This
next draft with six or seven quarterbacks. Just just six
or seven quarterbacks is considered a much better draft. Dallas
maybe says, we'll take we'll take the picks in next

(13:40):
year's draft, and the following year's draft they'll be stronger
than last year's draft. So maybe that was their timing.
But I think I think Dallas wanted and they just
wanted him for a number, and that's not the number
Mike and his agent wanted. So green Bay got their playmaker,
which they've needed for many years, and Dallas got flexibility.
So I you know, everybody has different windows. You know,

(14:00):
green Bay wants to win. Now, Dallas can't compete with
with with you know, Baltimore's roster, or Kansas City's roster,
or Philadelphia's roster. I just don't think they have the personnel.
It would be different if they had a Josh Allen
at quarterback, but they have Dak Off a second surgery
at quarterback. Dak needs elements, he needs to be part

(14:21):
of an entourage to win. Josh Allen, Lamar Mahomes, it's different.
But with Dak, if you're paying Dack that money, you're
limiting I mean, that's why the Kenny Pickett ceedee lamb.
If they stay healthy, it gives you a shot. But
Dak's not going to carry an offense. He's gonna he's
gonna need elements to you know, get into the twenty

(14:43):
four to twenty seven, twenty eight points every Sunday range.
He needs help, so and you get that help through flexibility.
So I think both teams got what they wanted and
it's not an overrated, underrated situation. I thought Dallas two
years ago needed to rebuild. I don't think they're a
very good football team. I think it's one of the

(15:04):
weaker staffs, and I think they're gonna end up with
a top six, seven or eight pick and get their
quarterback without giving up any more draft picks. I honestly
believe that. So congratulations to the Buckeyes big triumph, dominating performance,
Matt Patricia and Matt Patricia's brain making Arch Manning look

(15:24):
completely overwhelmed. Take a deep breath, Game one in Columbus.
I think he'll be fine, but today was not a
great look. The volume
