Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
We were talking about the rash of ACL injuries this year,
led by Michaeh Parsons and Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes got hurt
that was contact in the Chargers game, Michaeh Parsons non
contact injury. And yesterday the NFL said that they announced
they're going to have a study to look at turf
and these are new rules or at least a new policy,
(00:26):
a new approach to this. And people, I think were
surprised at the number of torn acls so far this year.
Thirty so far. Now, that seems like a lot, And
the reason why it seems like a lot is because
there's some big names in here. In twenty twenty four
there were thirty eight torn acls, twenty twenty three, forty three,
twenty twenty two point fifty one, twenty twenty one, fifty seven,
(00:51):
twenty twenty forty two. You can go back to twenty
thirteen there were sixty three torn acls. So it seems
like we're trending down. But why can't we come up
with universal fields that can prevent at least the non
contact injury. So we bring in the head coach of
the Chargers, Jim Harbaugh. Those numbers alarming to you, surprising
(01:13):
to you. Anything we can do to improve those number
of a c ls, Yeah, I mean that.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
That discussion has been going on for a long time
with the UH with the turf and they and they
they're very scientific about it. Uh you know my understanding
almost like you know, stint meters in UH in golf.
But those numbers to me, I mean, it's it, Uh,
it's like one a year, you know. That's it's kind
of my my recollection from UH, you know, from coaching
(01:43):
all these years and and UH and playing as well
as about UH, one guy and the team will get
an a c L. And there was a day where that, uh,
that a c L would be career ending. You know,
think back then. Yeah, you know Gail Sayers and UH
and now UH you know it's UH advancements in UH
in safety and medical UH, you know, UH are are
(02:06):
really incredible and getting getting better all the time.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
But when you were at Michigan, all of your linemen
had to wear braces, knee braces.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Yes, that was that was.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
And how preventative is that? I know, Jake Buds got
hurt and Blake Krum you know, got hurt as well.
Those are contact But did it Is it that helpful
in preventing a c LS?
Speaker 4 (02:29):
I thought so, I really did, Dan.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Uh, the the running backs, tight ends didn't didn't wear them,
but we had the defensive linemen wearing uh knee braces
in practice. Uh and that would Uh it doesn't prevent
prevent like a but whatever injury it would have been,
it makes it a lot less in in my experience,
(02:54):
and uh and uh trainers in the medical experts.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
What was different about the Chiefs this year as opposed
to previous years.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Oh, there's there's it's just the most the most historic, incredible. Uh.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
You know job that that team has done year in
year out. Andy Reid, Uh, you know the best, he's
the best.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Uh. Patrick Mahomes incredible competitor.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
And UH that was I was talking to one of
our our assistant coaches yesterday.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
And if we can just do half, we could just.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Do half of what they they've been able to accomplish
over the last seven years.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
You know, we I do it. I know I would
do a cartwheel.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
But what what's the game plan of of Mahomes? He
seems like he's running a lot more. He had been
running a lot more than in previous years and had
been their most dangerous runner. But as a defensive philosophy,
what was it going into this game?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
There?
Speaker 3 (03:58):
There there's adversity in the offensive line. Uh, different combinations,
different different you know, really good players out. But uh
they uh guy stepped in and uh they were chiefs
are still operating at a at.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
A very high level. And I was, I mean, I
was for the competitor that Patrick is.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
I mean that was was just hope and praying that
that he would have dodged a bullet, and uh, you know,
unfortunately he didn't.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
But uh, he's he's already, you.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Know, getting ready for surgery, and you just just know
his mindset it's going to be it's gonna be surgery
and then and then rehab.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
He's just he just he's he just he just wants to.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Be doing And so that's uh, really we're trying to
replicate that here and in Los Angeles, and uh.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
What are you trying to force him out of the pocket,
because he loves to go, right, But I you know,
it's it's easier said than done that we don't want
let him go outside the pocket.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Patrick Mahomes, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Oh, uh, you know you try to contain him, you
really do that.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
The the discipline in the in the rush lanes you
gotta have. It's got to be coordinated with with all
five or four or six or seven rushers. Uh, you know,
every single play, and he's still and he still finds
ways to uh you know, to make the impossible possible.
(05:32):
But uh, it's Tuesday. It's uh it's our feet are moving.
We're up, and we're gonna keep it moving because uh
we got Dallas this year this week, and uh, I
really think they're the They're the best offense we've played
in a while.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Uh, really good receivers, really good quarterback.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Uh, very good upfront, and uh running game that we're
gonna try to figure out how to stop as well.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Talking about that, Jim Harbaugh, Chargers head coach, you coach
any differently in December than you do in September?
Speaker 4 (06:04):
That's a great question. You know they all count the same,
you know they count the same, but uh, yeah, it's different.
It's almost it's like the fourth quarter in.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
A in a game, you know, and then you know,
you get down to the to the end and.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
It's you know then it's it's like.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Like the two minute drill, you know, in the in
the in the playoffs, or you know, trying to get
into the playoffs. But everybody, everybody is fighting for their lives.
Everybody's fighting, you know, really for their their playoff destiny.
And and that's and the and the and the teams
that aren't don't have a chance to be in the playoffs,
they're fighting at the at.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
The highest level.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Uh, you know, for pride and for for for their
team and for their for their their organizations. It's it's
that competitive season. Tis the season for competition.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
How much does it help playing the position as a
head coach, helping Justin Herbert play the position.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
I've been asked that a bunch of times, and I
don't have a great answer for that, because he is
just so much better at everything, uh every every part
of the game.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Uh Is there anything you do better than or did
better than Justin Herbert?
Speaker 4 (07:22):
There's nothing.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
There's nothing to nothing, And I don't want to demonstrate anything.
I mean, it's just not gonna it's not gonna look right.
Uh So I just uh, you know, really really focus
on uh, you know, number one, protecting him and but
it's just yeah, a tremendous blessing to have him, Derwin James, Justin,
(07:47):
Herbert Khalil Mack. Uh the absolute best leaders I've ever
been and playmakers leaders and playmakers.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Uh, but that that I've ever been associated with.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
You said you were still processing the Sharone Moore situation.
What are you processing? What are what? What is going
through your head or trying to understand?
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yeah, it's it's uh really still and still don't have
my head wrapped around it.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
Dan, Uh, It's.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah it Uh, it's a tragedy and just praying for
all concerned. I love my alma mater, love Michigan, and
but I love the Chargers too. And Uh, I'd been
doing disservice if I wasn't putting all my focus on
the on this game.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
This is the most important game for us.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
When's the last time you talked to Sharon Moore?
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Uh? Have it early early December? Uh? But I I
have texted.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Him nothing, nothing since he was arrested, Just texts. Oh
you have Yeah? How are his spirit?
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (09:02):
I think I think there is it's a tragedy. What
Uh the worst days of his life? And uh, you know,
keep it together and and uh and take care of
your family. That's you know, that's the message. And I
getting spiritual guidance.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Uh. You know it's really critical.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Are you helping Michigan at all find their head coach?
Speaker 4 (09:26):
No, I'm not all focuses on Uh the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Well, congrats on the win, and uh, good luck against
Dallas and then you host Houston, then you're at Denver.
Who's the best team you face? You talked about Dallas
will be the best offense. Who's the best team?
Speaker 4 (09:43):
So we played definitely uh that we played in a while, you.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Know, right the team that you know stands out, Uh,
you know the ones that that uh.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
That got the best of us.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
But these last two games, chiefs uh Eagles, I mean
football at uh, you know, at at the highest level.
You know, that's been and I think it's I think
it's I think it's made us keener and sharper and
finer too to go through those two games.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
And uh, and we expect the same challenge this week.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Do you want to play in the snow?
Speaker 4 (10:20):
I prefer the.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Snow then uh, then thirty five or thirty three in rain?
So uh, as soon as soon as the temperature goes
below thirty. Uh, I know it's not gonna rain, and
uh I prefer that.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Uh, but you look at the doll like the dolphins
don't win games under forty degrees? Like what how does
that imp Like? There are guys that aren't from Miami,
but you know they don't win in cold weather? Why
is that?
Speaker 4 (10:49):
Uh? That's that that's Ah, that's something I can't. I can't.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
I am kind of an expert at uh growing up
in uh the Midwest and.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
And Michigan, Ohio, chicage playing in Chicago.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Uh, you know, it's it's really a function of like
my dad used to tell us when we were kids.
He'd say, you you you, you know, get out of
the house, Dan, it's cold out there. Get your feet
moving and keep it moving. You'd walk out, and then
then the click of the door would click behind you.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Uh wait they locked the door.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Yeah, you hear the click.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Okay, we're our feet moving and keep it moving. But
it's that's that's that's the secret. That's the answer. The
the you become your body becomes like a human hot
tub because your your your heart is pumping warm, hot blood,
especially when you're young, and you know that goes from
the the heart to the arteries too, to the capitillaries,
(11:49):
to the to the tissue, and it's you know, the
more muscle you got, that's the more UH. That's the
more UH insulation that you have. High school anatomy tell
it goes back back to the lungs and reaction to
eights and it just keeps keeps falling like so you
just you just keep moving. And then when you're not playing,
you go to the go to the sidelinket by that
(12:10):
that heater in that warm bench.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Who had it better than you did in cold weather?
Speaker 4 (12:16):
I mean a lot of experience there, nobody.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Dan, There you go, there you go.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
I know the answer to that one.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
I was worried. I was worried about you there. Thanks
for joining us. Good luck against Dallas. Appreciate it, coach,
Thank you Dan. That's Jim Harbaugh second year's charge, your head, coach.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Oh, we've been celebrating all night long. The Knicks won
the Cup. Todd's got his nixt gear on. The Knicks
win the Cup and they beat the Spurs. No word
on the parade in New York City, And when the
(13:34):
banner will be raised? I do have a question, though,
like an honest, legitimate question. Will the Knicks raise a
cup banner? Did the other teams? Did the Lakers didn't?
I think we had Barkley on and I and Barkley
was saying they better not raise a banner, did they? Marvin?
Speaker 6 (13:53):
Yes, I think they have a small banner, so the
Knicks should do it.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Yeah, they haven't had any banners go up there in
a long long time.
Speaker 7 (14:01):
Yes, time, I think you raise a cup like at
a staff dinner to celebrate with Jeff Bayn and that's
the cup you raised, but not an actual thing hanging
from the rafters.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
I think the Nicks will probably raise a banner, but
the Lakers did raise a banner. Huh yeah, Paul.
Speaker 8 (14:15):
Yeah, confirmed twenty twenty three. Never forget Lakers embrace in
season tournament with banner ceremony. It's not the biggest banner,
but it's a very becoming okay becoming.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
It's gorgeous.
Speaker 8 (14:26):
It's like black and gold.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Okay, well purple the Emirates, Yeah yeah, but they did win.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Now.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
I know we've joked about the cup most of the morning,
having fun with it. But this is what will be
lost on people, I think, and that is focusing on
the Spurs because they need to play in meaningful games.
That's a very young roster and I think this is
something that can help them later on this season. I
don't think that they're a threat to win the NBA Finals,
(14:55):
but get in the playoffs and play with some meaningful games.
You know Von Castle who played well, Wemby's coming off
the bench, they got Dylan Harper, like, they have some
pieces there, but they're young and they need to play
in meaningful games, and this is as close as they'll
play in meaningful games.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
Now.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
They did beat the Thunder the other night, and you
know that caught people's attention. Here. Now all of a sudden,
you look at them and they're not the one of
these years, they're going to be a pretty good team.
They might be ahead of schedule here. And that's what
I was taking away from this game. You're playing for something.
You're playing for a cup, but you're playing for money
(15:35):
as well, for you know, the guys on your team
that don't make a lot of money, and that can
be impactful. The spotlight a little brighter there and maybe
the Spurs pick up some much needed experience that can
help them down the road. Pay.
Speaker 8 (15:49):
So you're saying the three four years from now when
they're in front of the Pooh this year, when Ben
Yama is holding the NBA title and he's like, how
did this all start? You know it was all went
back to the up that lost.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
The Knicks lit the fire. See once again, you're mocking this.
You're doing a lot of mocking. Sure not the Spurs
side of this. The Knicks, I am yeah. Go New York, Go,
New York, Go right, Todd.
Speaker 9 (16:13):
Go New York, O, New York.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Were the Knicks that we're doing it?
Speaker 7 (16:16):
The Kicks whitting three pointers and you're putting up bricks.
Speaker 2 (16:20):

another gift package here just in time for the holidays.
(17:01):
So I went out in the kitchen and all of
a sudden, I see that must be bacon wrapped filet mignon.
We got Ribbi Steak, Pannini's pork Shop, millionnaires and cream corn.
Who is better than the Knicks? Are jealous? Man? That's
(17:23):
a victory celebration right there. But meet Friday courtesy of
our partners from Heartland Steak CEO. You go to the
website Heartland steakco dot com and you can get some
great gift ideas for the holidays.
Speaker 8 (17:37):
Yes, Paul, yeah, I want to go back to the
Knicks for a second. I was looking at the standings.
They're eighteen and seven, but they've outscored their opponents by
nine points a game. That's the best in the East
this year. Detroit is young, the Raptors are good ish,
the Celtics are injured. In the recent twenty years. This
might be their best chance to make the finals. Oh yeah, yeah,
(17:58):
absolutely yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
All previous teams to reach the NBA Cup Championship Game,
the Lakers, Pacers, Bucks, Thunder, they all qualified for the
NBA playoffs. In each of the previous two seasons. The
team that lost the Cup Championship game advanced further in
the postseason than the team that won the Cup. So
whoa shadow the Day brought to you by Benani America.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
Yes, Marvin, they had nothing left after they won the Cup.
They spent exhausted.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
See, you guys are mocking. I'm trying to look at
the positive here. I don't want the commissioner mad at me.
It seems like he's upset with everybody but Amazon Prime
carrying this. He had this to say last.
Speaker 10 (18:49):
Night, as a fan, I think you do a great
job educating you know, other fans about the game, because that,
I would say has frustrated me in the past about
some coverage when it's sort of reduced to one side
wanted it more, this side played harder, and when you
guys are explaining like why can't a guy get a
shot off? Why is a particular defense working? And when
(19:10):
you go and when you guys go out on the
floor and demonstrate things I can say as a fan,
I love that part of the coverage.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
I think he's taking a shot at Charles Barkley. I
don't like it because Charles said it was I think stupid.
Maybe that was the word he used, Yes, eaton.
Speaker 11 (19:25):
Well, Charles isn't necessarily wrong, except the only problem with
it is there's nothing unique about the in season tournament.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Oh oh wait a minute, I got Charles called it embarrassing,
not stupid.
Speaker 11 (19:39):
Okay, yeah, well I don't know if it's embarrassing, but
they the idea is correct. The infrastructure in order to
accomplish the idea is incorrect. Okay, tweaks would you have
with this? Well, this is basically taking like a page
from soccer. Soccer has all of these in season to ornaments,
(20:00):
right like in England they have the FA Cup that
they have the Carabout Cup. Those are different. One of
them it's every team within the pyramid plays against each other,
so it's special. Another one it's only like the top
four or five leagues they play against each other, so
it's special.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
This is an NBA.
Speaker 11 (20:19):
Tournament of NBA teams playing other NBA teams in the
NBA season. There's nothing unique about it whatsoever. If you
had G League teams in there, and you had some
D one teams or something and be like, whoa, this
is special. This is really something. Now we got something.
But we don't have that. In the United States, we
have the US Open Cup. That's basically every soccer league
(20:40):
in the country for the most part, all get together
and play in this one cup.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
The USL Cup is every USL.
Speaker 11 (20:46):
League playing against each other, or most of the USL
leagues playing against each other. There's not if it was
just the MLS Cup and it was only MLS teams
playing against each other. Then that would just be called
the regular season. There's nothing about it. This is all
just a regular season. You need to get something else,
get put European teams in there or something. You need
to make it different. Yeah, Paul, Yeah, I totally agree
(21:07):
with Seeden. It feels like forced relevance. It's somewhat early
in the season. If you didn't change the color of
the courts, you would think it's a generally just a
regular season game. Almost all the games also count in
the regular seasons standings, so they're like double dipping at
the final felt a bit special because we're told it was.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Yeah, it felt like we're force fed, Like, what's wrong
with you? Don't you understand you should be really hyping
this up. We haven't been hyping it up. I don't
even know if I mentioned who was in the finals yesterday.
Speaker 11 (21:41):
Yes, it should mean something because, like you know, if
there's a trophy at stake, then you should want to
win it, so let's go win it. There's just nothing
unique about it other than grouping together some games and
then calling it a competition.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Chase Daniel from the Mothership he'll join us coming up
at about ten minutes Robert Griffin Junior the third. A
little later on, Reggie Miller stops by. Tony Gonzalez will
join us as well. You have Davante Adams if he
for Thursday, and it felt like this was going to
be a game time decision. That's what Sean McVay said.
(22:18):
The commanders have shut down Jade and Daniels, and they
know what they have in Jayden Daniels, and you know
he's getting banged up. I don't think anybody's surprised that
with that build, was he going to get banged up?
And the answer is yes. Meanwhile, Jackson Dart will continue
to play for the Giants because they don't know what
they have in Jackson Dart. And I don't know, and
I want to talk to RG three and even Chase Daniel.
(22:40):
I don't know if you can ask somebody to change.
I never understood this philosophy with NFL teams. If you're
really successful in college and you run the ball and
you also pass, but you know one of your strengths
is you run the ball. Because Lamar Jackson did that
at Louisville and then wondered, well can he throw the football?
(23:02):
He's got to learn how to play in the pocket. Well, yes,
but I don't want him to stop running. Cam Newton,
I don't want him to stop running. I want them
to run smartly. And you're gonna ask Jackson Dart can
you change? And you know these guys go by instinct
that you know, they're just like a natural reaction time
(23:24):
with something you can't go wait, wait what am I
supposed to do? Now? You would think slider, get out
of bounds. You should be able to think on your feet.
And I don't know if Jackson Dart wants to change.
I don't know if he can change because this is
his whole mindset. This is an aggressive football player who
plays a position where you normally don't have aggression. Josh
(23:47):
Allen is as big as anybody on the football field.
I don't worry about him, but he also slides. He
also plays smarter than he used to. Mahomes, you know
he's on the move, but I think because he has
to be on the move, And then you wonder is
he going to be using his legs able to use
(24:09):
his legs when he comes back from this surgery. I
don't want you know. Kyler Murray is who he is,
but I don't want him to change his style. I
want him to change his approach. But I can't say
to Kyler Murray, don't use your legs or Josh Allen,
don't use your legs. Lamar Jackson, don't use your legs.
(24:30):
This is what made you great, this is why we
took you with a you know, high draft pick. And
with Jackson Dart, I don't know if you can say
to him, we love the aggression, but let's live to
you know, have another play because you can't be in
concussion protocol. And what's he played ten games and I
(24:51):
think five times they've had him in the blue tent.
You know, that's a habit. That's the problem I have
with Jackson Dart. You can play with aggression, you can,
you know, you can have that energy there, but do
not take on defensive players. You know, if it means
(25:12):
the Super Bowls on the line and you're going to
dive into the end zone John Elway doing the helicopter Okay,
I mean even go back to Carson Wentz in that
game against the Rams. Did he need to dive into
the end zone and then get his knee blown out? No?
So you're asking these guys, hey, I used to do that,
or I did that in high school, I did that
(25:33):
in college. Why can't I do it now? Because it's
the NFL and with Jackson Dart, he's got three more games.
You know, now is when you start to find out.
You know, Cleveland's going to find out about Shador Sanders
these next three games, going to find out is he
a franchise quarterback? Because that'll be a pretty good sample
size and they probably have already made up their mind
(25:56):
of are they going to take a quarterback high in
the draft, but maybe should Or Sanders can show them, hey,
I can be a franchise quarterback, or some other team
might look at that. So you got some players who
are playing for things and it might not be playing
for their team. It could be let me showcase my talent.
I wouldn't be surprised if Cleveland goes all in on
(26:18):
a quarterback and should Or Sanders is not going to
be the Browns quarterback like that, that wouldn't surprise me
at all. I think he's shown glimpses. Dylan Gabriel is
not a franchise quarterback. You know, there's certain guys that
they just come in and they get an opportunity. Maybe
they get recycled and then maybe they prove in three
(26:39):
years or four years they can play. But you got
three games, like the Bengals are really interesting with Joe Burrow.
I mean they're playing the Dolphins. I don't know which
Joe Burrow and the Bengals will show up. I mean
they got embarrassed against the Ravens. That's a no show
and that would really concern me. You know another thing
(27:01):
that I saw with the Cleveland Browns against the Bears,
the number of guys who didn't play in that game
for the Browns felt like it's cold. I don't want
to play. And I talked to a former NFL executive
yesterday and he laughed about it. He said, this feels
like this is too cold, and I I don't know
(27:23):
if I want to go out there. Ah man, I'm
not feeling as healthy as possible. I said, well, they
do play in Cleveland, and he said, well, there's Cleveland
cold and then there's Chicago cold. And I thought, okay,
so maybe you made a business decision of I don't
want to go out there and play in this weather.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Of applause for Satan O'Connor. Yeah, Satan said the Chiefs
weren't going to make the playoffs, and he was all
in on the Seahawks beating the Rams last night. The
Hawks fire. Yeah, the Seaton Hawks. So he avoids a
pie to the face. I have a pie of the
face coming up at the end of the show. Fritzy
(28:15):
will administer the pie of my face.
Speaker 7 (28:17):
And you said you wanted the thing on top of
your head.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
If I did not, because if I do, there will
be blood.
Speaker 4 (28:25):
They could affect the voting process.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
That's that's true. By the way, there's already backstabbing the
backroom guys. You know, Mario is already upset. He's the
defending backroom guy winner last year. And now you got
some backroom guys who were nominating other backroom guys. Then
you got some I mean, now it's starting to get
a little ugly here. And I said, great, that's contempt.
(28:50):
Go ahead, make sure whatever you do, you do it
on camera. Okay, but we will announce the most valuable
backroom guy most valuable dan at least valuable Danet, and
I have the one vote for the BRG. You the
audience will vote at Danpatrick dot com on the most
valuable and least valuable Danet.
Speaker 7 (29:09):
Yes, John, Has anyone asked to speak with you privately
in recent days a weeks to stake their case?
Speaker 4 (29:13):
Yes? Yes? And were your receptive to that? I thought
that was a week on their part to do that.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
I told that person during the commercial break that if
they would like to talk to me, then do it privately.
It's letting you know there's some things going on, things
going ribes, gifts, no, nothing like that. Chat, just a chat.
All right, here's the information I got. This is the
(29:39):
UH college football playoff format that we will see. It
looks like next year. This was done in the spring
of twenty twenty four, is when they came up with
this new format. Each of the big four conferences so
Big ten, acc SEC, and Big twelve guaranteed birth for
(30:01):
being their champion. The highest ranked team among remaining conferences
is also involved. Notre Dame is guaranteed of birth if
in the top twelve rankings. All the other slots six
of those if you include Notre Dame as the top
twelve teams at large berths for the field. That means
(30:25):
if we use next year's structure, Notre Dame would be
in and Duke would have been in because they won
the ACC. James Madison would not be in. The Big
Ten in SEC went to the Big twelve in ACC
and said, hey, we're going to guarantee your champion gets
into the playoffs. They got Notre Dame support by saying
(30:46):
you're going to get in if you're part of the
top twelve ranked teams. This is where it gets interesting.
The Big ten in SEC went to the Mountain West
Pack twelve, Sun Belt MAC, American Conference Conference USA and
they laid out the new structure here the new format,
(31:06):
and they said that the two conferences, Big ten and
SEC will have ultimate control over the college football playoffs,
and then gave the six conferences a short window to
accept the deal. It was basically here, it is accepted,
and then they did. Now if they hadn't, the SEC
and Big Ten were apparently ready to have their own
(31:30):
playoff structure and take all the proceeds, so it would
just be the Big ten in the SEC. Right now,
it's for either twelve or fourteen. There's nothing that says
what if they go to sixteen or twenty four, but
that will open up more discussion here. And my source
wasn't sure if this structure would work for sixteen to
(31:52):
twenty four or how that would work. But this is
going to be the playoff format moving forward, and this
you'll still have maybe a Cinderella story or two in there.
But if you go to fourteen or sixteen, and Pete Bavaqua,
Notre Dame Athletic director said we should be going to
sixteen teams, maybe you're going to fourteen. I don't have
(32:15):
the number, and my source didn't have the number, but
the playoff format is designated for fourteen schools.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
Yes.
Speaker 8 (32:22):
So a couple of weeks ago, even on our show,
it was talked about that it could go to twenty
four teams. It almost feels like that people in college
football leaked out or suggested twenty four. So when it
goes to sixteen, everyone's like, oh, that's not so bad. Sixteen.
It's the natural evolution, Like you're managing expectations. You threw
out twenty four, which I mean lots of people throwing
out twenty four teams. People are like no way, that's
(32:43):
too much. Regular season will get hurt.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
Oh I don't want twenty four.
Speaker 8 (32:46):
And nobody does, which is why I think people in
college football threw that out there so when it moves
quickly to sixteen, it's not a big of a deal.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
Yeah. I don't give college football much credit when it
comes to this stuff because they'd screwed it up. Screwed up.
You can't sit there and go, man, I see what
they're this is what the NFL does. Now, if the
NFL does that, I go, okay, I see what they're
doing college football and be like I don't know, how
about this? Or then how about this? And then I
(33:13):
don't know, let's change this.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
Point.
Speaker 8 (33:16):
You know what's really bothering people, at least on social
media this week is that different college football programs are
announcing that they're resigning players.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
All the schools are doing it.
Speaker 8 (33:25):
I don't know who kind of evented it's now become
the thing blank blank football has resigned Ted Smith or whatever.
Everyone's doing it, and it's really turning people off.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
I'm fine with it, Like there's other things to be
worried about, concerned about. Then we're going to make an
announcement that our quarterback is staying. There's other bigger problems
now you are resigning them. It's all business. You are
resigning these kids. It's year to year. Uh. Kevin in Michigan. Kevin,
(33:57):
And what's on your mind today?
Speaker 12 (34:00):
Hey Dan?
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Good morning six four. Dan.
Speaker 12 (34:06):
Just wanted to push back a little bit on your
opinion from earlier saying you send to the term we
don't want to see uh these underdogs, uh be these
favorites to college football playoffs. But I kind of push
back on that and say, it is relatively similar to
basketball unless you're you pledge allegiance to those teams like
(34:30):
Ohio State, Georgia, notre game if they were in it.
Anyone outside of those folks who pledge allegiance. I feel like,
for the most part, want to see those teams go down.
And I think all the way back to Boise State
and they're upset over Oklahoma.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
I know that was many.
Speaker 12 (34:50):
Moons ago, but just what an incredible game that was.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
I know, but we keep going back to that game.
We don't bring up any other game. If you give
me three or four more. Now, I'm glad James Madison
and Too Lane are in they did what they were
supposed to do. They shouldn't be punished. All I want
to make sure is that they're not blowouts. That they
get blown out and then people say the following, I
(35:14):
told you so. That's the only thing that I don't
want to happen. If they happen to shock the world, great,
it's content I don't have. I'm not rooting for anybody,
but you know, the line is twenty and a half.
I mean, the odds are probably not great. It's going
to be a great game, But Kevin, thank you. I'll
take those comments under advisement. But if you have a
(35:36):
surprise in March Madness, we expect that it's really rare.
I mean, there's a real separation between the powerhouses and
JMU and TWU Lane, a real separation talent wise and
as a result financially, how they built these rosters and
(35:57):
do they have a chance. They're on the field, you
have a chance, but if you look at the point spreads,
not likely that they're going to keep it close. And
that's that's the only thing that I I hope that
we can have competitive games. That's all because I just
don't want it to I told you so. I told
you so. Yep, you can tell me so, because you
(36:21):
know Vegas is expecting blowouts here.
Speaker 4 (36:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
Point.
Speaker 8 (36:24):
I would say though, that because of the NL NIL era,
that these big heavyweight programs are a little more vulnerable
than they were six or seven years ago. Like it
wouldn't even be a game like Oregon squeaked by Iowa,
which is a nice team. They had a couple other
close ones. There's not a steamroller in college football anymore.
Ohio State's pretty close, but even they lost.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
Yeah, but that's this year. I mean Ohio State, although
they lost to Michigan last year. Ohio State, Ohio State's
gonna have probably five first round draft picks, five first
round draft picks, maybe more, and with their marquee guys
aren't even eligible for the draft, so there's a big separation.
(37:06):
It is to Lane or James Madison going to have
a first round pick. I don't think so, second round,
third round, probably not. It's just a big, big drop off,
and that's where college football needs to get to the
point where everybody is on a level playing field. And
you know you're going to get that because of NIL,
(37:27):
your collectives, you know we're heading towards it. It's not
stopping right now. Even with fourteen playoff teams, or even sixteen,
it's going to go to twenty four. March Madness will
end up at ninety six. One of these days in
our lifetime, it'll go to ninety six schools. And the
(37:48):
reason is they never pass on money. That's why when
we had four teams, and I said immediately, like I
was going to be thrilled if we got fourteen, the
college football playoffs would be four schools, and I go, okay,
that's progress. And then I said, once they realize the
amount of money here, it's going to quickly double, if
(38:11):
not triple. And that's what we're facing right now, and
facing is the wrong word. That's the new world in
college football because of the amount of money that's there
for these conferences, Notre Dame individually, there's a lot of
money at stake. More games, more money, March Madness, more games,
(38:33):
more money. I've said it many times, follow the money.
I don't care. The answer is money. Now, what's the question?
Speaker 7 (38:42):
Yes, Todd and the coach of the ninety seventh basketball team,
so of course going to wonder why you got fired
and be shocked that just because they didn't make the
field of ninety six that they showed him the.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Door, Thank you, Todd.
Speaker 6 (38:53):
Yes, Marvin, I think if you see one of those powerhouses,
maybe say like Texas A and M get mollywopped in
the college football playoff, there's gonna be some issues because
they shell out so much money that they're gonna be like,
what are we paying you all this money for. We're
paying you to try to win a national title. You're
not paying these guys or the collective twenty to thirty
million dollars to lose in the first round or the
(39:14):
college football playoffs. So you're gonna see more guys get
fired in the middle of September, the middle of October
because these you know, because boosters are showing out so
much money.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Yeah, but Miami is what a three and a half
point underdog, four and a half point underdog against Texas
A and M, so that wouldn't surprise anybody. I mean,
I'm waiting if A and M wins by fourteen, and
then you're gonna hear it. Well, see, they shouldn't have
been in Notre Dame. Should have been in Yes, Mark, But.
Speaker 6 (39:38):
If you're a booster for Texas A, and m You
don't want to hear that. You want to hear that
we won. They don't want to hear that. Oh they
were favors, so they should have won. No, no, no,
we paid Mike Elko. We paid all these players twenty
thirty million dollars as a collective Miami.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
When Miami paid their players, they all pay their I
mean Carson Beck was the highest paid quarterback when he
went to Miami. I think he went out and bought
a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Like, I mean, they're all getting paid,
but not the smaller schools.
Speaker 8 (40:08):
Yeah, Pully remember in college when like someone had a
new accord and that was cool. Can you imagine rolling
around in a Lambo? I mean, even its Miami, you're sticking.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
Out Josh and san Antonio. Hi, Josh, what's onny mind?
Speaker 9 (40:23):
Hey Dan? I'm an admitted college football junkie, and I
blame myself because I'll watch however many games they put on.
But one thing I will say about college football fans
is that we're never happy. First it was the coaches
in the ap defense, the debating who is going to
be playing in the College Football Championship. Then we said no,
that can't work. Let's go to a computer system, the BCS,
(40:45):
and we said, no, that can't work. So we said,
let's go to a.
Speaker 13 (40:48):
Four team playoff. And now it's twelve teams. And now
it's this kind of contrived idea that you mentioned with
the Big twelve or the Big ten and the SEC
running it.
Speaker 9 (41:00):
I have no self control. I'm going to watch every
game that they're gonna put on.
Speaker 13 (41:05):
But I really wish, I really value and what makes
college football special is the regular season. Every game matters,
and if any year this year for a fourteen playoffs,
those four teams are a tier above everybody else.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
All right, Yeah, I worry about the regular season, but
now all of a sudden, more teams have an opportunity to,
if they play well during the regular season, get into
the postseason. You know, it's a kind of a push
pull taffee pull. It feels like like if you have
more teams, then it's watered down and it doesn't mean
(41:41):
the same. And I know, but it's the new age.
It's money college basketball, college football, the amount of money,
march madness. Why not have more madness college football. Let's
have more teams, more money, more televised games feels like
a win win, and I don't know if they're worried
(42:03):
about us as much as they're worried about themselves the
amount of money that Now, are you going to watch tonight?
I mean this is standalone game Alabama and Oklahoma, No NFL.
Maybe as we get closer to Christmas, you're staying inside
you watch the game. No, I mean, these ratings aren't
going to be good this first rip of games because
(42:26):
the NFL, and even you've got a game on opposite
the Bears in the Packers on Saturday night. You do
have a standalone game on Saturday. I think that's noon
Miami and Texas A and M. But you know they're
not going to do well in the ratings. Yeah, Mark,
stupid question.
Speaker 6 (42:45):
But do you think there's going to be less regular
season games of college football if they expand the twenty
four teams?
Speaker 2 (42:50):
I don't know how many. I don't know how many
regular season games that you can have and then you
have the postseason because you're going to say to these kids,
are we going to treat them like professionals? Now? They're
going to have an eighteen game schedule? Were they potential
for an eighteen game schedule, and I wonder about that, well,
(43:11):
I wonder how many games is too many? Right now?
If you have twelve, you go into the playoffs. Now
you win what three games, so that's fifteen games.
Speaker 8 (43:21):
Yeah, Paulie, you think we don't care about the health
of NFL players, We really don't care about the health
of college players.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
There's zero protection. That's why I said, why is it
the NFL they want to protect them and they change
the kickoff, but in college football they don't change the kickoff.
It's like, ah, you got your bell, run, get back
in there. Come on, Hey, you're getting paid nil money, yes, Tom?
Speaker 7 (43:41):
And what about the exams and the papers these student
athletes have to do.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
You can't keep giving them more games. They'll never have
any time to study. Are you being sarcast a little
bit little
