Dan Patrick Show ten billion dollars. We'll discuss the Lakers
value and if you're an owner of a team in
any sport, you're probably gathering your troops to say, what
are we worth? What are the Yankees worth? What are
the Cowboys worth? We'll check in with the Lakers coming

(00:25):
up in a little bit eight seven seven to three.

of Humor, Fritzi, you got seat, and Marv Pauley yours
truly the back room guys. We'll come up with the
poll question. Got a play of the day, and you

(01:08):
got basketball coming up tonight. Thunder at the Pacers Game six.
OKC started out as a four and a half point
road favorite, now up to six according to DraftKings, And
the big question is Tyrese Halliburton.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Can he play? Does he play? How much does he play?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Is there any thought to him not playing and maybe
trying to get to a game seven and OKAC where
he might be a little healthier. All questions that should
be asked will be asked and hopefully answered. Here is
the question to Tyrese Halliburton on his approach to game six.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
How smart do you have to be I guess in
this situation or are you not even thinking in those
terms at this point?

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Well?

Speaker 3 (01:51):
I think it depends on who you ask.

Speaker 5 (01:52):
I mean, you're asking me, So I think I have
to be as smart as I as I want to
be up to understand the risks, ask the right questions.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
But I'm a competitor. I want to play.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
I'm gonna do everything in my power to play, and
that's just.

Speaker 6 (02:04):
What it is.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, So I don't know exactly what they're going to
get out of him. I know the over under is
thirteen and a half points. It's been around seventeen and
a half. He has been a slow starter. If I'm
OKC and TYREE'SE Halliburton's out there, I'm probably excited about
that matchup because then I say to lou Dort the
first five times down the floor, put him in a

(02:26):
pick and roll, Let's go at him, Let's see what
he has and see how long he can stay out there,
And that might be one of those I'm going to
keep you out there as long as I think you're
a positive for us. If not, then you know TJ
McConnell's going to play a majority of the minutes here.
If I'm OKAC, I'd rather have Haliburton out there right now.

(02:47):
If I know that he's not seventy five percent, I'm
going to go at him constantly. Now he can be
out there, you might have two guards with you know
TJ McConnell handling the ball. You still have the threat
of Halliburton, but you do have players who can score
twenty points and you're playing at home. Okayse's defense not

(03:07):
as good on the road Pacers. That pace is a
little quicker. You can win this game. I'd say steal
this game, but you can win this game. The question
is the risk and the reward With Tyrese Halliburton. You
roll the dice, you put him out there. You say,
go as long as you can go, but you want

(03:28):
to get the goal is to get to game seven.
If you're telling me that, if we get to Game
seven and I rest him for the next couple of
days and he can be closer to eighty ninety percent.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
You might roll the dice. You might run that risk.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
And that goes back to the previous game where I
wouldn't have put him out there for the second half.
Rick Carlisle said all the right things. Hey, he did
some positives there. He was still a detriment to the team.
He wanted to be out there. We all respect that.
But this is a bottom line. We got to win.
You don't get consolation prizes. You got to win. How

(04:05):
do I help my team the best? And is that
not playing or not playing him the number of minutes
that he wants to play, Because that's the kind of
thing that you're out there and then you sit down
and now you gotta get that injury cranked up again.
That'll be a difficult thing for Tyrese Haliburton. How long

(04:25):
can he play. How long are you going to sit
him for? And can you have a couple of people
who step up in this situation? All right, Seeton, what's
the poll question? Then we'll dive into the Lakers sale
of ten billion dollars.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Why don't we start right there? All right?

Speaker 7 (04:41):
The Bus family selling the Lakers is smart or nuts?
Classic game of smarter nuts. Maybe smarter enough?

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Smarter nuts?

Speaker 2 (04:52):
It is, it is ten billion dollars, it is, but
it's still there's a lot of billionaires. We talk about
this all the time, a lot of billionaires, too many.
But they do like owning teams because then they become
far more important. People actually care what you have to say.
You're a billionaire. Oh you're a billionaire and you own

(05:13):
Manchester United. You're a billionaire and you own the Dallas Cowboys.
Now all of a sudden, people are listening to what
you have to say. That's what was surprising with this
that Genie Buss will continue her role as the team governor.
But Mark Walter is coming in and bringing his Dodger
playbook and maybe some changes there. But what's different with

(05:36):
basketball as opposed to baseball is in baseball he could
say I want or we want that player, We're going
to re sign that player, We're going to give him whatever.
In basketball, you're the guardrails are a little tighter there.
You just can't go out and say, hey, I want
Giannis and you know they're they're You have to go

(06:00):
through the process of, well, we got a trade, you
got the second apron, you got all these different things
that are going on to try to prevent owners from
buying a championship here. And while he has the money
the resources there, it'll be different in what he does now.
He could give the Lakers the same edge the Golden

(06:20):
State had they spent money. They spent their money buying
a dynasty, building a dynasty. But you're investing heavily, maybe
in scouting and analytics. You're still going to have stars.
The Lakers always have stars. But this is an NBA
era defined by luxury taxes and second aprons, and a

(06:42):
deep pocketed owner doesn't have the same impact. The ten
billion dollars for the Lakers. While I was surprised at
the number, I was probably more surprised that they were sold.
And you know, with what Mark has done with the Dodgers,
which has been an unbelievable blueprint of we have the money,

(07:02):
we'll spend, we'll spend wisely, we get the right people,
we get our kind of player, we got our kind
of manager. They're going to refurbish Dodger Stadium. So they're
doing all the right things to build an infrastructure. And
I think that's the important part of this, keeping an
infrastructure that resonates with the fans, because if I'm a fan,

(07:24):
I just want to know what's this mean? While we
get excited we go out ownership, new ownership, ten billion dollars,
what's it mean if you're a fan. And we'll get
answers to this coming up next hour of what does
it mean for you? What's it mean for your team
moving forward? And I think most people thought, Okay, what

(07:46):
are the Knicks worth? What are the Yankees worth? What
are the Cowboys worth? And keep this in mind, who
would have thought that in a calendar year the Celtics
and the Lakers would both be sold? Remarkable and the
Celtics for a poultry six point one billion dollars. Go
back to the commanders when they were sold. Now, I

(08:06):
remember getting a tip on it and they said, you know,
it's gonna be close to five billion dollars and I go, really, yeah, Okay,
so there's a recent trend going on, and maybe it's
getting the mom and pop shops out of the business.
And now you have corporations who are taking over teams,
and you have corporations who own a variety of teams

(08:30):
in a variety of sports.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
And that's what's changed a lot.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
The ten billion dollars for the Lakers. That's a that's
a global brand. How many global brands do we have,
like true global brand Cowboys, Yankees, Notre Dame Football.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Yeah, that's why.

Speaker 7 (08:52):
It's such a shocking move because it's like Paris selling
the Eiffel Tower. Why what the hell you doing that?
For your Disney selling off Mickey Mouse? Why the hell
did you do that? What do you hold on to that?
It just seems like something you I mean that, how
do you sell the moon?

Speaker 2 (09:12):
You know? But it's ten billion? Okay, what's it going
to be worth in ten years? So that's what I
don't understand. If you're getting out, why are you getting out?
If you're buying it at ten billion, what do you
expected to be in five years from now? Ten years
from now? You already locked into that TV deal you
already know what your money is going to be. The

(09:35):
game is changing as far as how many stars you
can afford, the luxury tax, the second April, you know,
all of these different things. The NBA is changing right
in front of us here, and you're seeing two small
market teams that made it to the NBA Finals. Yeah,
pauling it just I.

Speaker 8 (09:53):
Guess it's obviously shocking. But in America, you aspire to
own the Lakers. Like Mark Walter, this is it. He
owns the Dodgers and the Lakers. He's made it. I
think he's sixty seven years old. But doctor Jerry Buss
passed away in twenty thirteen. In less than a generation,
his family is moving on from the team. I know
it's a long process, but I don't get it. I

(10:13):
need to explain to me. You aspire to own the
Lakers and a Lakers maybe above all others. I would
maybe include the Yankees in that owning the Lakers. Doctor
Jerry Buss is a household name in Los Angeles, in
California in the sports world, and he bought them for
sixty seven million. Yeah, and under his stewardship, they had
some of the greatest days in sports.

Speaker 9 (10:34):
History.

Speaker 8 (10:34):
Yeah, I can't imagine not wanting to keep that in
the family.

Speaker 7 (10:38):
Yeah, So what's the pole question, Seaton? Well, we're gonna
put up there. Are they smarter nuts? Which is smart
or nuts? Not smarter nuts? That might be something to
that too, all right. You know, yesterday we had the
pole question, should Tyres Haliburton play in game six, which
was I think sort of roundly criticized as a very

(11:00):
dumb question, which seems a lot smarter today. Seventy five
percent of people said absolutely he should play. Today, I
think we're going to put that back up and see
how that changes today.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
We don't know. He probably doesn't know, but he did
give you that, Hey, I'm going to do everything in
my power to play. Well, that doesn't give me confidence.
I'm going to do everything I can to play, doesn't
sound like and it might just be go out there
and play as long as you can. But when you rest,

(11:31):
when you have these kind of injuries, they're going to
work on that calf muscle right up until game time. Well,
you can't work on it while the game is going on,
although he'll be moving and you're going to have him
sit on the bench at some point. I mean it's
going to be difficult for him to be up and
down back in the lineup, and okay, see I would

(11:52):
be running everything right towards Tyrese Haliburton to start. I
want to see what you have, yes, Tod, and to
what extent can you.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
Leave it to the player. At some point, Rick Carlisle,
as the coach, has to jump in a goll. I
know he wants to be a hero and as the
NBA Finals, who knows if you're ever going to get
back there again. But if at some point it's decided
that he's been becoming more of a detriment as the
game plays out tonight, he's got to say, you know, thanks,
you did the best you could have a seat.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
Yeah, it's a tough you know.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Let's say they don't play him tonight and they lose,
then Rick Carlisle is going to face the slings and
arrows here. But if you're trying to get to a
game seven, what is the best avenue to get to
a game seven? Is it to rest Halliburton and hope
we can win a game at home? And maybe it is,

(12:40):
but you still have to get to that game seven.
But if you tell me Halliburton will be exponentially healthier
when you get to Game seven Sunday night, then I
really have to be I have to be seriously considering
that because right now Vegas is saying, you know, thirteen
and a half points, He's going to be there, but

(13:02):
he's not going to be taken over the game.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Now.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
He might have one of those incredible performances once in
a lifetime, which he's had a few of those already
where maybe there's some magic there, but okay, see they're healthy,
they're deep, and they're coming at that. I'd be going
right at him every single time that first quarter, every
single time. I'm going to make him guard. I'm going

(13:24):
to put pressure on him as much as I can.
Daniel and Indiana leads this off by Daniel.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
Dan, how are you good, sir? How's your confidence level?

Speaker 9 (13:36):
It's a ten paces and seven all right question? So
what would you say is easier to win the game
five Pacers just lost or Game seven on the road
with a youth thunder team with an experience.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Well, I want to get to a Game seven. I
want to see how they feel. Game seven, it'll be
on their home court. Indiana won't come in once again
as an underdog. But if you win game six, depending
on how you win game six, let's say you win
by double digits. Let's say you win on a last
second shot. Now you bring momentum out there to OKC

(14:16):
Game seven, all bets are.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
Off, but.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
You gotta get to a game seven. That's that's the
tricky part, the hard part.

Speaker 8 (14:26):
Yeah, Paul, when I hear that Haliburton cut, that sounds
like a guy who's not playing. He never said the
word I'm playing tonight. He said I'll do everything in
my power. I want to play. And this is one
of those situations where Rick Carlo may have to say,
like I'm gonna take the bullet here, I'm gonna I'm
gonna take it out of the player's hands and roll
the dice. Because you send out a lineup tonight that

(14:47):
surprises OKAC and he's not in it. How are they
prepared for that? Now, there's a lot of downside, but
there's probably more upside.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
I think they'll be fine in preparing for it because
they're such a great defensive team. But yes, it does.
It would change my game plan if I'm attacking Indiana.
But the thunder favored by six SGA the over unders
thirty three and a half. I think it's been that
every single game, maybe thirty four and a half and

(15:15):
Tyrese haliburt and the over under is thirteen and a
half points. All right, Well, take a break eight seven
seven to three. DP Show operator Tyler is sitting by.
He'll take your phone calls and email Addressdpadanpatrick dot com

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Will Smith pinshit walk off home run.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
The Dodgers beat the Padres for their fifth consecutive win.
So that's twenty seven comeback wins for the Dodgers this season.
That's five more than any other team. Stat of the day,

(16:29):
Ron to buy Panini America the official trading cards of
the Dan Patrick Show. Dodger manager Dave Roberts was asked
about the Dodger owner Mark Walder buying the Lakers.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
I think it's a very exciting day for the Lakers,
for the city of Los Angeles, and I think that
speaking from you know, a Dodger employee, he's very competitive
and he's going to do everything he can to produce
a championship caliber team every single year and you know,
make sure the city he feels proud about the Lakers

(17:02):
and the legacy that they've already built, you know, with
the Bus.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
Family, Ramona Shelbourne Mothership said the Genie Bus will continue
in her role for the foreseeable future. Now, we were
told that with Mark Cuban when he sold and I
think he retained like twenty seven percent of the maps,
that he would still be involved in decision making and
then what happens they trade Luca and Mark apparently wasn't

(17:29):
consulted on that. But Ramona with her reporting has Genie
Bus staying and maintaining her role as Genie Bus with
the Lakers, which you want that continuity and if you're
taking over a team, you know you don't want to
go in there and make wholesale changes like you want
to come in and I'm sure they've done their due
diligence of what is the day to day who's making decisions.

(17:52):
How do you feel about JJ Reddick, Rob Polinka looking
at everything here? Because when you're buying a team, it's
not just hey, I get to own that team. You're
buying employees, you're buying a building, You're there's so much
more involved in this, buying a network. I mean, there's
a lot involved in it. And that's where we sometimes

(18:13):
look at it and say that person or those people
bought that team, they bought more than just that. But
Jeenie Buss staying in her role I think is very
smart with the new ownership there. All right, A couple
of phone calls in here Anthony and Minnesota. Hi Anthony,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 10 (18:33):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (18:34):
Dan, how's it going good?

Speaker 11 (18:36):
I just kind of want to touch on you. So
I do a lot of trade in the stock market,
and you see a lot of people they want to
buy low, sell high, and you know a lot of
these franchises are hot right now. Celtics just were in
the title last year. Lakers obviously being the Lakers get
a lot of headlines out of that. So owners are thinking, Hey,
I kind of I'm getting old.

Speaker 9 (18:56):
I want to retire.

Speaker 11 (18:57):
I'm dealing with a lot of these players. Hold out,
I can reinvest this into a better opportunity, so I
might sell. You know, Dave fortnois sold Barsool bought it
back for a dollar more. In Buffett obviously just stepping down,
and you have him staying on the board, so you
have that.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
And also I have.

Speaker 9 (19:14):
A question for you too.

Speaker 11 (19:16):
Okay, so we have a King of the Hill revival
coming up. If it was that you, Polly, Seton, and Todd,
who would you guys be? I would have you Dan
as hank Dale, Polly seating his Bloomhower, and then Todd
of corse Bill.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
All right, I haven't seen an episode of King of
the Hill. Yeah, I haven't seen.

Speaker 8 (19:41):
You'll like it. It's kind of a short thing.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
Yeah, I'm more of a Bob's Burger guy.

Speaker 7 (19:48):
Yes, I appreciate what that caller said to about billionaires retiring,
but they don't. There's a reason billionaires don't retire because
it's fun to make money. Like Warren Buffett did, just
retire that's true. He's ninety four.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
Yeah, I know.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
You can't put Dave Portnoy with Warren Buffett, nor can
you put Genie Buss, who's I think in her sixties.

Speaker 7 (20:06):
Yes, you know, like Jeanie's still really young to be
able to do it. There's there's a reason billionaires don't retire.
It's because it's great to just keep making money like that.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
Yeah, when somebody says, oh, he made enough money, I've
never met somebody who said that's it. I don't want
to make another dollar here. To step back from my
duties a bit. I'm not retiring.

Speaker 7 (20:24):
I'm just going to step back from my day to
day responsibilities here.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
But if you're a billionaire, it feels like they all
aspire to own a sports team because you want to
be relevant, you want people to care. You walk into
a building and that's our owner. That's my building, this
is our team. There's a lot of billionaires, but there's
a finite amount of billionaires who own sports teams, and

(20:50):
they love love to be treated like royalty when they
go out, people want to talk to them. Hey, what
do you think about if you're a billionaire and you
don't own a sports team, The only reason why people
come up to you is probably say, can I have
some money? You own a team. They want to ask
you about the team. That's why you find these billionaires.

(21:13):
They're waiting in line. But the fact that you're selling now,
the Celtics sold now, Lakers sold now. I understand the
Washington commanders with Daniel Snyder because that's either hey, sell
or we're going to make you sell and we're going
to embarrass you even more so than you've embarrassed yourself.
But with the Lakers and the Celtics and the same

(21:34):
calendar calendar year, that's pretty amazing. Jerry in La Hi, Jerry,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 6 (21:41):
Again?

Speaker 9 (21:42):
Five eleven, one seventy five.

Speaker 12 (21:46):
After being named after Jerry West, I just wanted to
put an input on the Lakers sailing So this might
be a positive sea this sense of questional decisions by
Gee in the past, and I think this is going
to be a better face.

Speaker 13 (22:01):
For the future.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Well, she's still staying in her position. So if you're
questioning her her role, she's still staying in that role.
I just want to see how this you know, wait,
what is different if I'm a Laker fan?

Speaker 3 (22:16):
What is different.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
What changes because this isn't the Dodgers, and maybe nothing
changes with the Lakers. I mean, you were the third seed,
you got star power for another decade with Luca, and
they're not afraid of trying to make a move here.
You're always going to be relevant, even when you're not good,

(22:39):
You're still relevant. When you had down years, even Kobe
at the end of his career, you're still relevant because
you had star power. And the Lakers have led the
league in star power. Go back to when you had
Elgin and Jerry and then all of a sudden, they
make the trade. They get Kareem and then you draft
Magic and Shaq and Kobe and Lebron.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Now you get Luke.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
I mean They've always had star power and will always
have star power because players will want to continue to
play in Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
Yeah, Pauline, I.

Speaker 8 (23:11):
Think you said this early in the morning meeting. The
Lakers always are bigger than any star on the Lakers,
even Shaquille O'Neal, who's global. But you know, the Golden
State Warriors are Steph Curry. They're known. They had a
ten year run because mostly Steph Curry, And you know,
I don't know if that branding stays forever.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
That's what I didn't understand. And once again, I'm not
a math major, and I do have people on to
make me smarter with the situation like this. But when
I hear the Golden State a couple of weeks ago
might be the most valuable NBA team, I go, what's now?
A lot of this has to do with what else
you own? The building and all of those things. I'm

(23:52):
just talking about the basketball team itself. When Steph Curry goes,
who cares about the Golden State Warriors on a national
or global basis? If I mean, the Lakers are always
going to be relevant, whether they're good or not, They're
going to be talked about. That's what I'm trying to

(24:15):
figure out here. With Golden State, it seems like it's
attached to Steph Curry, not that branding, because when Steve
Kerr and Steph Curry leave, what are you going to have?

Speaker 3 (24:28):
Now?

Speaker 2 (24:29):
Maybe you find some star power there, but really it
seems to hinge on one player, Whereas the Lakers it's
about the brand Cowboys, it's about the brand Yankees. It's
about the brand Notre Dame. It's about the brand Duke
about the brand. Now, there's only a few of those.
But that's what I don't understand with the evaluations here.

(24:49):
If I'm just looking at the basketball team and with
Golden State, when Steph goes with a lot of eyeballs go.
But with the Lakers, you're always going to have that.
The Cowboy always had that, The Yankees always will have that.
It's a powerful brand that you have. It's not just
we're branded because we were winning the last ten years. Okay,

(25:14):
Cowboys they won, you know, thirty years ago. Even prior
to that. The Yankees, of course, for one hundred years
have been winning Notre Dame, football, winning, Duke winning, Golden State.
You got an unbelievable ten year window here. I don't
know how that holds up the Celtics. That is a

(25:34):
global brand. Doesn't matter who's playing, the Celtics win. There's
something to be said for that. Let's see John and Georgia. Hi, John,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 6 (25:48):
Good morning gentlemen. With that being said, Dan, if you
are and I want to go around the horn here,
if you all boom, you're all millionaires, would you want
to own the Yankees, the Lakers, the the We'll just
call them Florida Panthers and the Yankee whom I miss,
oh and the Doubt or the Dallas Cowboys round the horn?

Speaker 9 (26:11):
Who would you pick to to?

Speaker 6 (26:12):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (26:12):
Well, first of all, John, we have to be billionaires,
not millionaires, so we'll start there.

Speaker 11 (26:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
I got to be a billionaire, all right. He gave
us four choices. So I guess the best teams are
the Chance whatever it might be, Florida just winning the
Stanley Cup.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
Uh, Todd.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
You can own Yankees, you can own Cowboys, you can
own Lakers, you can own the Florida Panthers.

Speaker 5 (26:40):
Being that NFL is so king, I'm gonna go Dallas Cowboys.
And that's probably much my main reason for making epic Seaton.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
I would do the Lakers.

Speaker 7 (26:48):
I love California, I love Los Angeles, and that is
I mean, just a cultural epicenter for the for the world.

Speaker 3 (26:58):
Heck yea, Marvin, the Lakers.

Speaker 14 (27:01):
The only place you'll find Leo DiCaprio is that a
Lakers game. The Stars go see the Lakers.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
I don't know if I'd buy the Lakers just so
Leo can come watch the Lakers, but.

Speaker 14 (27:12):
I said the Stars afterwards, Okay, Yeah, Okay, they always
have star power no matter what.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
Okay, all right, yeah, Paul.

Speaker 8 (27:17):
If it was a different baseball team, I'd go Baseball
just because of the amount of games. I couldn't pass
it on any of the Lakers, which brings us back to today.
I couldn't pass on that.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
I would say the Cowboys because they haven't been good,
but they're still so powerful. That branding is so powerful
and I don't know if that ever wears off. It's
been thirty years, that's a long, long drought, but the
Cowboys still resonate. Yeah, pulling.

Speaker 8 (27:50):
So going back to that, Jerry Jones is not selling
the Cowboys. It doesn't appear to be selling the Cowboys.
But as a businessman, shouldn't he based off what we've seen.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
His ego one line exactly?

Speaker 8 (28:02):
No, his his image is the Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (28:04):
But what is he getting that he doesn't already have? Right?

Speaker 2 (28:07):
If I give him twelve billion dollars for the Cowboys,
what happens?

Speaker 8 (28:11):
That's why I don't understand what Mark Cuban did because
he I know, he has other things, and he's been
on shows and he's very, very famous, but his identity
as a MAVs owner.

Speaker 3 (28:20):
There's a bigger play going on with the MAVs.

Speaker 2 (28:23):
You know, they're trying to get gambling there and now,
and maybe Mark just thought, you know what, I've won
my championship. Great, now I move on. You know, he's
moving on from Shark Tank. I you know, maybe, I mean,
you don't know what the motivation is for somebody, but
money probably is not the motivation because I don't know

(28:43):
if there's anything that Jerry Jones can get by selling
that team that he doesn't already have. But he does
lose something, and that is being relevant. Yeah, the Lakers.

Speaker 7 (28:54):
Have been I mean not even relevant, but I mean
maybe even dominant for seventy years.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
You go back to.

Speaker 7 (29:04):
Minneapolis, yeah, right, and if you just look at i
mean some of the players that you had, George Miken
and then you go through to the sixties and you
have Elgin Baylor and Jerry West right, I mean you
could go decade by decade and they were always I
mean it's insulting to just say relevant that.

Speaker 3 (29:22):
Yeah, but it's a long time.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
But the Cowboys haven't done anything in thirty years and
their brand has grown, which is how does that happen?
They will they lead sport, anything that can happen in
the You know, Brian Schottenheimer is going to talk about
his dad, let's have that story on Sports Center, Dak

(29:46):
talks about his legacy. Sports owner is going to lead
with that constant constant. The Cowboys now might not be
great TV, but still that branding for a team that
hasn't won a franchise, hasn't won over thirty years. The
Lakers have been successful, the Yankees have been successful, the
Celtics have been successful. Then Notre Dame has played a

(30:08):
national title game, Duke has won championships. Who has a
brand that stays strong, if not stronger, and they've never
they haven't won in a generation, they haven't won.

Speaker 8 (30:20):
Yeah, pull, I think the comp for the Cowboys in
the NBA is the Knicks. How many NBA finals had
they been to? But they sell out for decades? Yeah,
and if they're even close to relevant, But.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
They're not a global brand. They are that's New York.
They're not beloved outside of New York. Nobody goes man,
i'm a unless you're a transplant, you're living in Florida.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
But Cowboy fans are all over.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
Nick fans No, I mean powerful in Manhattan, well in
the Five boroughs, but that that's not a national I mean,
it's known, but it's not a powerful brand in La
or you know, in Portland, or in Texas or and
you know, it's just not But the Cowboys. Cowboys are

(31:06):
all over. They're omnipresent, Yes they are.

Speaker 7 (31:09):
The Cowboys are probably the lone global NFL brand.

Speaker 3 (31:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (31:15):
The NFL really, as shocking as it is, is not
a big sport worldwide. It's really not. But the Cowboys
are certainly the one standout that are known across the world.
I think a lot of that has to do, though,
with their popularity and remaining so relevant, has to do
just with Jerry Jones, and not just because he is

(31:35):
such a character, but because you know, he's one of
I don't know three people that actually runs the entire league, right,
he has his business interests with the NFL, aren't just
with the Cowboys. He owns all the concessions, he owns
the hospitality that everybody uses, he owns all of that stuff.

Speaker 3 (31:51):
I think that his.

Speaker 7 (31:54):
Control and sort of really ownership over the whole league
to some extent is also what helps propel them and
keep the Cowboys relevant.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Well, he's always in front of a microphone too, and
he's always doing something that may be counterproductive, maybe ego driven.
But of all the owners, nobody is out there more
than he is. So when a fan base says, boy,
I wish ownership, like I wanted the Knick's ownership to
get in front of a microphone and tell me why
you fired Tom Thibodeaux or what is your plans or

(32:24):
what are your plans coming up?

Speaker 6 (32:26):
Here?

Speaker 3 (32:27):
By the way, they still don't have a head coach there.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
Mike Brown, who just got he got fired by Sacramento apparently,
is the leading candidate. Mike. I like Mike Brown, Mike,
but Michael Brown. Yeah, we're gonna We're gonna rebrand him.
We're hiring Michael Brown. Is he related to Mike Brown?

Speaker 3 (32:47):
Mike Yeah.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Uh. That doesn't sound like you had a really good
game plan here. That's all that. Maybe maybe you bring
him in he does well, but that doesn't sound like, hey,
we got the guy. Anybody could have had the guy
that If that's the guy you're going to hire, because
you went after all these other guys. So if Mike
Brown's your guy, then you don't go after Billy Donovan

(33:13):
or Jason Kidd.

Speaker 8 (33:14):
Yes, Paul, remember before the playoffs you said the Knicks
will probably not hire a head coach during the finals,
so they'll hijack the story. Yeah, how did think Commissioner
Silver's dealing with the Lakers news today?

Speaker 2 (33:24):
First thing I thought of is the previous commissioner hated
if you did anything about your team any announcement during
the NBA Finals.

Speaker 3 (33:33):
Do not.

Speaker 2 (33:33):
I remember him saying, do not, Hi Jack the NBA
Finals and I'm be like, okay, yeah, all right, nobody.
I don't want anybody hiring a coach. And I remember
Brian Hill got fired or hired by Orlando I remember,
and it was a Sunday night, and I think the
season had ended, and I remember not getting scolded. Actually

(33:55):
I got a little bit scolded because we went with
the story because you didn't want to hijack the NBA Finals,
and I think the finals had just ended. But David
Aldridge had the scoop and I was like, oh boy,
I'm gonna hear about this, Patrick, what are you doing.
I'm told you don't hi Jack. He had an exclusive.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
There. Let me take a break. Play of the Day
is up next.

Speaker 3 (34:49):

They sell right in front of the play. Oh walk,

Speaker 2 (34:59):

(35:42):
dot Com the way tire buying should be our one
poll question, Seaton, We're deep into our one.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
What are the results so far? Were hardcore? Into our one?

Speaker 7 (35:53):
We have up there the bus family selling the Lakers
is smarter nuts Right now, seventy one percent of the
audience say that this is smart. And will Tyrese Haliburton
play in game six? Seventy four percent have him yes,
he will play?

Speaker 2 (36:08):
Should he play in game six? I think he'll try
to play, But should he play? Because see that I
don't know what the results of the MRI have been.

Speaker 7 (36:18):
That yesterday we had up there, should Tyrese Haliburton play
in Game six? And seventy six percent of the audience
said yes, okay.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
Eight seven, seven to three DP show. Let's see Dane
in New York. Hi, Dane, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 9 (36:33):
Hey?

Speaker 13 (36:33):
It's an honor to be on the show five A
one eighty five, first time, long time h I think
there's something psychological about the Dallas Cowboys of why they're
so loved. And call me crazy, but I think that
amongst all the teams for the decades that have been
they've had the best uniform from top to bottom consistently,

(36:55):
And I think there's something about the blue.

Speaker 6 (36:56):
And silver that actually attracts.

Speaker 13 (36:58):
To the female mindset. And I think if they want
to wear it and can't wait to put on that
stuff like it gets a whole family, then for decades.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
Okay, I think it's more than that, because if it
just came down to wearing silver or blue, I'd be
wearing it every single day when I was growing up.
If it appealed, you know, appealed to the ladies, you know,
you had the building, the hole in the roof, God
could watch the Cowboys, Tom Landry, the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders,
and you had winning football. Back then, you had America's

(37:30):
hero and Roger Stambach. They were doomsday defense. Now there's
so much to like about the Cowboys. They were different.
But they haven't done anything in thirty years. That's the
remarkable part. They haven't done anything. They're still extremely relevant,
maybe more relevant than any other football team that you know.

(37:52):
Networks shows are always looking for a way to get
the Cowboys into their rundown, into their daily show.

Speaker 14 (37:58):
Yes, Mormon, I think the Cowboys are very much like
the Steelers in the fact that they won Super Bowls
and they had great runs in two different generations.

Speaker 2 (38:08):
Yeah, you know that that you're you'll have a generation
who's then raising a generation off of their team, and
then your generation.

Speaker 3 (38:17):
Maybe you didn't win.

Speaker 2 (38:18):
But if you're a cowboy fan from the seventies, and
then your son becomes a cowboy fan, then his son
becomes a cowboy fan or daughter becomes a cowboy fan.

Speaker 8 (38:27):
Yeah, Paint, I do think this point about the uniforms
is consistent with all the best sports teams in America,
the most successful. They change their uniforms, at least Pittsburgh.
They do throwbacks. They don't change. The Lakers never change.
They may be a tweak here there. The Cowboys almost
no changes. Yeah, he's Yankees. The Dodgers, God bless him, never.

Speaker 3 (38:47):
Changed, you know, Kelly and Pittsburgh.

Speaker 10 (38:49):
Hi, Kelly, Hey Dan, thanks for taking the call. Yeah,
I actually called I love the contradict seat and in
my own mind and in my own truck, I'm going
over the road truck driver, long story show, and your
call screener really got me at the end of the
call because I knew he was going to ask, and
I'm like, he says, so where are you from? I said, well,
I am from Pittsburgh. But what my point was? And

(39:10):
he did, you know, he did tell me they were
actually talking globally, but he liked what I had to
say about it.

Speaker 6 (39:16):
So here's what it is.

Speaker 3 (39:17):
We haul the.

Speaker 10 (39:18):
Cable for Fox and CBS. The headquarters for that is
out of Pittsburgh, all the games, everything. This is my
thirty eighth year of doing this. And I told him,
I said, there is no other team like the Pittsburgh
Steelers that number one doesn't necessarily have to travel. Well,
their fans live in these other cities. And when we

(39:41):
go to these stadiums, of course we're going through the
parking lots, the tailgate parties. The Steeler flags are flying
as much as the team that they're visiting. And when
you go into the stadium, for instance, and including Dallas. Ironically,
when you go to Texas Stadium for a Steelers Cowboy game,

(40:02):
at least a third or not more of the fans
in there are in black and gold and live in
the Dallas area. And you're right, I think it's a
genre older fans seventies, that's what did it.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
Yeah, Hey, Pittsburgh travels, they're fan bases who are really
good at traveling. But I said, if I said you
could buy the Cowboys or the Steelers, what are you buying.
You're buying the Cowboys, Paul.

Speaker 8 (40:32):
Just from lifestyle. I like the sea.

Speaker 2 (40:34):
No, I'm talking about value. Oh yeah, we're talking about value. No, lifestyle.

Speaker 8 (40:40):
Oh I think that. Yeah, they're probably the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (40:44):
No, you take the Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
Cowboys are probably bloated in value, though you'd still take them.
They're probably worth more than ten billion dollars. Why sell?
Why did the Bus family sell? We'll find out next
two on this Thursday.

Speaker 3 (41:01):
