Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio. It's our one on this Wednesday. Oh, we've
been celebrating all night long. The Knicks won the Cup.
Todd's got his nixt gear on. The Knicks win the

(00:22):
Cup and they beat the Spurs. No word on the
parade in New York City, And when the banner will
be raised? I do have a question, though, like an honest,
legitimate question. Will the Knicks raise a cup banner? Did
the other teams? Did the Lakers didn't?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
I think we had Barkley on and I and Barkley
was saying they better not raise a banner. Did they? Marvin? Yes,
I think they have a small banner.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
So the Knicks, you do it?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, they haven't had any banners go up there in
a long long time. Yes, Tom, I.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Think you raise a cup like at a staff dinner
to celebrate with Champayne, and that's the cup you raised,
but not actual thing hanging from the rafters.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
I think the Nicks will probably raise a banner. But
the Lakers did raise a banner. Huh Yeah, Paul.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
Yeah, Confirmed twenty twenty three. Never forget Lakers embrace in
season tournament with banner ceremony. It's not the biggest banner,
but it's a very becoming okay becoming.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
It's gorgeous. It's like black and gold.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Okay, well purple the Emirates. Yeah yeah, but they did win. Now,
I know we've joked about the Cup most of the morning,
having fun with it. But this is what will be
lost on people, I think, and that is focusing on
the Spurs because they need to play in meaningful games.
That's a very young roster and I think this is

(01:42):
something that can help them later on this season. I
don't think that they're a threat to win the NBA Finals,
but get in the playoffs and play with some meaningful games.
You know Stefan Castle who played well, Wemby's coming off
the bench, they got Dylan Harper, like, they have some
pieces there. But they're young and they need to play
in meaningful games. And this is as close as they'll

(02:05):
play in meaningful games now. They did beat the Thunder
the other night, and you know that caught people's attention. Here.
Now all of a sudden, you look at them and
they're not the one of these years, they're going to
be a pretty good team. They might be ahead of
schedule here, and that's what I was taking away from
this game. You're playing for something. You're playing for a cup,

(02:27):
but you're playing for money as well, for you know,
the guys on your team that don't make a lot
of money, and that can be impactful. The spotlight a
little brighter there and maybe the Spurs pick up some
much needed experience that can help them down the road. Polly,
So you're saying.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
The three four years from now when they're in front
of the posto this year when Benyama is holding the
NBA title and he's like, how did this all start?
You know, it was all went back to the cup
that lost. The Knicks lit the fire.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
See once again, you're mocking this.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
You're doing a lot of mocking.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Sure the Spurs side of this, Okay, the Knicks, I am, yeah,
go New York, Go New York. Go right, Todd, go
New York.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
O New York.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Were the Knicks that we're doing it for the Kicks. We'
hitting three pointers and you're putting up bricks. Good morning,
if you're watching on Peacock or the NBC Sports Network.

(03:53):
just in time for the holidays. So I went out
in the kitchen and all of a sudden, I see
that must be bacon wrapped pilet mignon. We got Ribbi Steak,
Pannini's pork Shop, millionnaires and cream corn. Who is better
than the.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Knicks?

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Are jealous? Man? That's a victory celebration right there. But
Meet Friday courtesy of our partners from Heartland Steak CEO.
You go to the website Heartland steakco dot com and
you can get some great gift ideas for the holidays.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
Yes, Paul, Yeah, I want to go back to the
Knicks for a second. I was looking at the standings.
They're eighteen and seven, but they've outscored their opponents by
nine points a game. That's the best in the East
this year. Detroit is young, the Raptors are good ish,
the Celtics are injured in the recent twenty years. This
might be their best chance to make the finals. Oh yeah, yeah,

(04:51):
absolutely yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
All four previous teams to reach the NBA Cup Championship Game,
the Lakers, Pacers, Bucks, Thunder, they all qualified for the
NBA playoffs in each of the previous two seasons. The
team that lost the Cup Championship game advanced further in
the postseason than the team that won the Cup. So
whoa Shadow of the Day brought to you by Benini Ammerica. Yes, Marvin,

(05:23):
they had nothing left after they won the Cup. They
spent exhausted. See, you guys are mocking. I'm trying to
look at the positive here. I don't want the commissioner
mad at me. It seems like he's upset with everybody
but Amazon Prime carrying this. He had this to say
last night.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
As a fan, I think you do a great job
educating you know, other fans about the game, because that,
I would say, has frustrated me in the past about
some coverage when it sort of reduced to one side
wanted it more this I played harder. I mean, when
you guys are explained like why can't a guy get
a shot off? Why is a particular defense working? And
when you go and when you guys go out on

(06:05):
the floor and demonstrate things. I can say as a fan,
I love that part of the coverage.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
I think he's taking a shot at Charles Barkley. I
don't like it because Charles said it was I think stupid.
Maybe that was the word he used.

Speaker 6 (06:17):
Yes, eton Well, Charles isn't necessarily wrong, except the only
problem with it is there's nothing unique about the in
season tournament.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Oh oh wait a minute, I got Charles called it embarrassing,
not stupid.

Speaker 6 (06:33):
Okay, yeah, well I don't know if it's embarrassing, but
they the idea is correct, the infrastructure in order to
accomplish the idea is incorrect.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Tweaks would you have with this?

Speaker 6 (06:46):
Well, this is basically taking like a page from soccer.
Soccer has all of these in season tournaments, right like
in England they have the f A Cup, they have
the Carabout Cup. Those are different one of them. It's
every team within the pyramid plays against each other, so
it's special. Another one, it's only like the top four

(07:07):
or five leagues. They play against each other, so it's special.
This is an NBA tournament of NBA teams playing other
NBA teams in the NBA season. There's nothing unique about
it whatsoever. If you had G League teams in there,
and you had some D one teams or something and
be like, whoa, this is special. This is really something.
Now we got something, But we don't have that. In

(07:28):
the United States. We have the US Open Cup. That's
basically every soccer league in the country for the most part,
all get together and play in this one cup.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
The USL Cup is every USL.

Speaker 6 (07:39):
League playing against each other, or most of the USL
leagues playing against each other. There's not If it was
just the MLS Cup and it was only MLS teams
playing against each other, then that would just be called
a regular season. There's nothing about that. This is all
just a regular season. You need to get something else,
get put European teams in there or something. You need
to make it different.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Yeah, po I.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Totally agree with seedon it feels like forced relevance. It's
somewhat early in the season. If you didn't change the
color of the courts, you would think it's a generally
just a regular season game. Almost all the games also
count in the regular season standings, so they're like double
dipping at the final felt a bit special because we're
told it was.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, it felt like we're force fed, Like, what's wrong
with you? Don't you understand you should be really hyping
this up. We haven't been hyping it up. I don't
even know if I mentioned who was in the finals yesterday, Yes.

Speaker 6 (08:34):
It should mean something because, like you know, if there's
a trophy at stake, then you should want to win it.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
So let's go win it.

Speaker 6 (08:42):
There's just nothing unique about it other than grouping together
some games and then calling it a competition.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Chase Daniel from the Mothership. He'll join us, coming up
in about ten minutes. Robert Griffin Junior third a little
later on, Reggie Miller stops by. Tony Gonzalez will join
us as well. Well. You have Davante Adams if he
for Thursday, and it felt like this was going to
be a game time decision. That's what Sean McVay said.

(09:11):
The Commanders have shut down Jade and Daniels and they
know what they have in Jayden Daniels, and you know
he's getting banged up. I don't think anybody's surprised that
with that build, was he going to get banged up?
And the answer is yes. Meanwhile, Jackson Dart will continue
to play for the Giants because they don't know what
they have in Jackson Dart and I don't know. And
I want to talk to RG three and even Chase Daniel.

(09:33):
I don't know if you can ask somebody to change.
I never understood this philosophy with NFL teams. If you're
really successful in college and you run the ball and
you also pass, but you know one of your strengths
is you run the ball, because Lamar Jackson did that
at Louisville and then people wondered, well, can he throw

(09:54):
the football? He's got to learn how to play in
the pocket. Well yes, but I don't want him to
stop up running. Cam Newton, I don't want him to
stop running. I want them to run smartly. And you're
going to ask Jackson Dart, can you change? And you
know these guys go by instinct that you know, they're
just like a natural reaction time with something you can't

(10:18):
go wait, wait, what am I supposed to do? Now?
You would think slider, get out of bounds. You should
be able to think on your feet. And I don't
know if Jackson Dart wants to change. I don't know
if he can change because this is his whole mindset.
This is an aggressive football player who plays a position
where you normally don't have aggression. Josh Allen is as

(10:41):
big as anybody on the football field. I don't worry
about him. But he also slides. He also plays smarter
than he used to. Mahomes. You know he's on the move,
but I think because he has to be on the move,
And then you wonder is he going to be using
his legs able to use his legs when he comes

(11:03):
back from this surgery. I don't want you know, Kyler
Murray is who he is, but I don't want him
to change his style. I want him to change his approach.
But I can't say to Kyler Murray, don't use your legs,
or Josh Allen, don't use your legs. Lamar Jackson, don't
use your legs. This is what made you great, This

(11:25):
is why we took you with a you know, high
draft pick. And with Jackson Dart, I don't know if
you can say to him, we love the aggression, but
let's live to you know, have another play because you
can't be in concussion protocol. And what's he played ten
games and I think five times they've had him in

(11:46):
the blue tent. You know, that's a habit. That's the
problem I have with Jackson Dart. You can play with aggression,
you can, you know, you can have that energy there,
but do not take on defensive players. You know, if
it means the Super Bowls on the line and you're

(12:07):
going to dive into the end zone John Elway doing
the helicopter, Okay, I mean even go back to Carson
Wentz in that game against the Rams. Did he need
to dive into the end zone and then get his
knee blown out? No? So you're asking these guys, hey,
I used to do that or I did that in
high school, I did that in college. Why can't I

(12:28):
do it now? Because it's the NFL? And with Jackson Dart,
he's got three more games, you know, now is when
you start to find out. You know, Cleveland's going to
find out about Shad Or Sanders. These next three games
going to find out is he a franchise quarterback, because
that'll be a pretty good sample size and they probably
have already made up their mind of are they going

(12:50):
to take a quarterback high in the draft, but maybe
should Or Sanders can show them, hey, I can be
a franchise quarterback or some other team might look look
at that. So you got some players who are playing
for things, and it might not be playing for their team.
It could be let me showcase my talent. I wouldn't
be surprised if Cleveland goes all in on a quarterback

(13:12):
and shad Or Sanders is not going to be the
Browns quarterback like that, that wouldn't surprise me at all.
I think he's shown glimpses. Dylan Gabriel is not a
franchise quarterback. You know, there's certain guys that they just
come in and they get an opportunity, maybe they get
recycled and then maybe they prove in three years or

(13:32):
four years they can play. But you got three games,
like the Bengals are really interesting with Joe Burrow. I
mean they're playing the Dolphins. I don't know which Joe
Burrow and the Bengals will show up. I mean they
got embarrassed against the Ravens. That's a no show and
that would really concern me. You know another thing that

(13:55):
I saw with the Cleveland Browns against the Bears, the
number of guys who didn't play in that game for
the Browns felt like it's cold. I don't want to play.
And I talked to a former NFL executive yesterday and
he laughed about it. He said, this feels like this
is too cold, and I I don't know if I

(14:16):
want to go out there. Ah man, I'm not feeling
as healthy as possible. I said, well, they do play
in Cleveland, and he said, well, there's Cleveland cold and
then there's Chicago cold. And I thought, okay, so maybe
you made a business decision of I don't want to
go out there and play in this weather. All right,
we'll get a poll question and we'll get to your

(14:37):
phone calls once again. Heartland steakco dot com. You can

(15:59):
thirtieth on the Mothership and he'll also be in the
radio booth for the Orange Bowl College Football playoff quarterfinal
on New Year's Day. Good to talk to you. Of
all the tape you've been breaking down, give me the
one that stood out good or bad?

Speaker 3 (16:18):
Yeah, I mean there's two in my opinion.

Speaker 8 (16:20):
The first one is Josh Allen and just what he's
been able to do with so much less, And that
was sort of the MVP conversation last year. And you
break it down, the first half was awful. The Bills
couldn't move the ball at all. The Patriots had him
figured out. Bills defensively looked bad. And then you just
turn on the second half and they rolled. And it's
just every single time that the Bills need to make

(16:43):
a play, they rely on Josh Allen, and Josh Allen
was putting some crazy situations and he was able to
make some plays. The other one than that, I really
enjoyed watching, and I think no one is talking about
them as Jacksonville Jaguars with Liam Cohne is doing. With
Trevor Lawrence. I mean, this was, without a doubt, the
best game Trevor Lawrence has ever played, maybe at any level.

(17:05):
And it's not only because the six touchdowns, right, that's
nice and you look at the stats and you're like, oh,
that's awesome, but you look at the play calling, you
look at the place sequencing, meaning what plays are you
running back.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
To back to back.

Speaker 8 (17:17):
He has different plays and three different variations that may
make the defense react certain ways. That the amount of
play action, the trust that Trevor Lawrence is throwing, and
just it's it's been impressive to watch because, in my opinion,
the jury was a little bit out on Trevor Lawrence. Hey,
how's he going to react? How's he going to be
with this third head coach or fourth however many it is.

(17:39):
And then you see what Liam Cohen's been able to do,
and he's been able to highlight the strong parts of
Trevor Lawrence's game, and that's throwing the football down the field,
and so it's just been really impressive. The other one,
real quick is Kayleb Williams. Caleb Williams to me and
Ben Johnson. If you just look at what Ben Johnson's doing,
He's worth fourteen points a game because these he's scheming.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Guys wide open.

Speaker 8 (18:04):
But also Kayleb Williams actually trying to find stuff open
and throw stuff open. And his growth has been really good.
I can't believe the Bears have ten wins right now.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Okay, but he's getting credit for that throw to DJ Moore.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
Yeah, that was risky.

Speaker 8 (18:21):
That was I mean, I honestly I broke it down
on the YouTube. It'll be out today. And when I
see that throw made, it's so nonchalant, right, he has
the ball down here and he just sort of tosses
it up like a prayer. And I don't know, first
of all, how the first safety missed it, and then
secondly the guy covering DJ Moore it went right through

(18:41):
his hands, and so everyone's gonna.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
Be like, oh my gosh, that's amazing. That's a great throw.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
I think it's risky, you know, back to Josh Allen
and you know, trying to equate what is value and
do we it Is it equal with being great in
September and October to being great in December? And this
is where Josh Allen, I mean, Matthew Stafford's been great wire.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
To wire, yes, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
But so I don't know, if I was a voter,
how do I equate what he's doing now in December
as opposed to what Matthew Stafford has done the entire year.

Speaker 8 (19:16):
I think Matthew Stafford still deserves the MVP and what
he's been able to do with this Rams scene. But Dan,
here's my thing, and I'm not a voter. I know
some people who are voters, and everyone votes differently. If
you look at the roster that Josh Allen has and
what he has been able to do lately, you can't
even remotely compare it to the roster that Matthew Stafford has.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
Now.

Speaker 8 (19:34):
Matthew's making some insane throws and Matthew's playing some of
the best Bowl of his career. But you look at
Kira and Williams, you look at and I know Josh
Allen has the running back, but.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
You look at the receiver group over there for the
Rams with Puka and DeVante.

Speaker 8 (19:48):
And just it just to me, I don't think that
Josh Allen has overtaken Matthew Stafford in the MVP race.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
But this is the year for Josh Allen.

Speaker 8 (19:59):
If there's any year that he's going to make some
hay in the AFC and actually win a Super Bowl,
it's going to be on the back of Josh Allen.
There's no Patrick Mahomes, there's no Lamar Jackson. There's no
Joe Burrow, so Josh Allen, it's going to be talked
about if they can't, if they're limping into the playoffs,
which are not right now, or they don't, they go
around or two and they lose again. It just seems

(20:21):
to me, and they just beat the best team in
the NFC other than the Broncos, and so to me,
this is the year that.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
Josh Allen has to get it done.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
Man, did you break down Philip Rivers?

Speaker 3 (20:32):
I did. Yes.

Speaker 8 (20:33):
It didn't get a lot of views because I guess
no one cares about old man Rivers, but it's on
the YouTube channel.

Speaker 3 (20:39):
First of all, forget about any of the stats. I
mean a.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Forty four year old Waite, are you grating differently? Are
you grading differently because you go, well, it's a forty
four year old guy, Are you treating him the same
way you would Shadoor Sanders?

Speaker 3 (20:53):
Not even close.

Speaker 8 (20:54):
And it's grading on a curve because Philip Rivers five
hasn't thrown a pass in five years, so he's coaching
his high team. And when you go on the road
against that Mike McDonald defense and Seattle and almost win
like it just here's the thing. They can't really throw
it outside the numbers because Phillip's arm strength just isn't there.

(21:15):
I mean he threw a couple that were like lollipops
and I'm like, oh my gosh, they barely fit in there.
But in between the numbers, and I would say the
one thing that really stood out to me is mentally
meant he has not missed it at all. You see
him out there after the first like twenty plays where
he's filling it out.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
He's getting the speed of the game.

Speaker 8 (21:33):
He's changing plays left right, he's motioning, he's doing this,
he's changing the pass plays.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
I'm like, how do you have all this figured out?
You got there on Monday.

Speaker 8 (21:41):
Your first practice was Wednesday, so it was it was
impressive for what it was. I mean, the stats aren't
aren't there. It's a huge Monday night game against sporty
hour Zone.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
He's Chased Daniel, the Mothership ESPN College Football and NFL
analyst and his show is on YouTube. He Chase Daniel Show.
I talked a little bit opening segment about Jackson Dart.
You know, the commander is going to shut down Jade Daniels.
They know what they have with him and let him
just get healthy in the off season. With Jackson Dart,

(22:11):
if you've been in the blue tent five times in
ten games, we have a real problem here. But I
don't know how you change somebody with their style and
you as a quarterback, can you what do you say
to Jackson Dart if he was your teammate and he
played this way and you were his backup, But you

(22:32):
might say, hey, keep playing this way. I'm going to
get in games. Yeah, yeah, but can he change modify
that style?

Speaker 8 (22:41):
He's gonna have to and and it's it's been talked
about and when you when you watch the games and
you and you do it, it's not at a place
of like, oh, you know, I don't care about my body.
I think he's just uber competitive. But it's borderline reckless
right now. And I think that's what he has to
understand and the new head coach to understand. I think
I think they have to go offense for their new

(23:03):
head coach because Jackson Dart, in my opinion, is the
franchise quarterback.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
He's done that.

Speaker 8 (23:07):
And yes, there are certain ways that you can run
an offense with the quarterback running, but you have to
ingrain it in the quarterbacks that if you keep doing this,
we're just not going to call the plays and we're
not going to call the runs. And it is a
big part of his game. And I mean, Dan, if
you go back to his old miss days, I mean,
that showed up all over the film. It was like, hey,

(23:28):
I want to take a hit, I want to do this.
I mean to be in the tent for five times
in ten games. It's just not the case. And when
you get into those situations, right because the game's moving
really fast emotionally, you're just in that situation and you
don't think of it, and all of a sudden you
just get popped and it's just I mean, did you
see the Commander's meeting with Dan Quinn on The Hard

(23:51):
Knocks end season. They were talking about how Jackson Dart
and dan Quinn was talking about how Jackson Dart is
reckless and he has no awareness. He's like, we have
to pop them, we have to hit him. Joett said
the same thing the deep score. We have to hit
Jackson Dart. So it's being talked about in other locker rooms.
That's how you know it's a problem. And Jackson Dart

(24:12):
has to like when he goes back this offseason after
the season and they picked the head coach, They're going
to sit down and be like, this is the number
one thing we have to fix. You are uber talented,
but you have to be available for our football team.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
But I don't know it's been ingrained in him. His
dad was a defenshive back. I mean, he plays like
he's a defenship back playing quarterback. And I just wonder,
can you instinctively as you're running go, oh, wait a minute,
I'm supposed to wait? So I wait, what am I
supposed to do? I don't know if you can do that?

(24:48):
And I think that'll be a real challenge for him.
And it doesn't sound like he wants to change.

Speaker 8 (24:53):
I think the one thing that I saw change and
that maybe gives me hope, is that if you look
at Jayden Daniels in college, right, the one thing I
was worried about him was he did take too many hits,
whether it was sacks or running. And he's a true
pocket passer that can take off and is exceptional running
the football. He got smoked in college a few times,
and I was worried about his frame. I was worried
about him getting hurt more in the NFL. He's done

(25:16):
a really nice job and Dan Quinn's done a really
nice job of understanding.

Speaker 3 (25:19):
Same with Cliff Kingsbury.

Speaker 8 (25:20):
Hey you gotta get down and you gotta do this,
and it's just maybe baby steps, but I think the
first thing that has to happen is he has to
Jackson dr has to take accountability for it. And if
you can't, I mean, you're not gonna sit the guy
for not playing.

Speaker 3 (25:35):
But eventually he's gonna get hurt.

Speaker 8 (25:37):
He's gonna be out for an extended period of time,
and maybe that will make it click for him, like, hey,
I can't be doing this to my team.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
The Dolphins have talked about sitting down to feels like
if you're sitting down and I'd like to see quinn
Ewers maybe get a little run here at the end
of the year, But it feels like once you sit
somebody down, are you kind of shaying to the team
we're moving on from that quarterback.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Look if that's a great.

Speaker 8 (26:07):
Question, and the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, whoever
it may be next year, because I'm I have no
idea what they're gonna do. They're gonna have a decision
to make with Tua, and I don't care about his
contract in what happens, but it just seems like, hey,
has Tua lived up to the standards on what they
probably thought they were gonna be Probably not right, Like

(26:29):
playoffs have been a dud all this stuff, and then
if you sit them down, I mean, you're saying you
want to see what a seventh round has for the
next three games, and if that seventh rounder plays well
enough or maybe you're in the QB conversation. It just
I don't think the jury's out yet on if Tua's
done or not. But it is a very difficult situation,

(26:51):
especially if you're Tua and you're seeing Daniel's make these
comments and you're like, oh my gosh, Like, man, I
thought I've done enough. And two has been really outspoken
on a lot of different things this year. It will
be interesting to see if if McDaniel's is the head
coach next year, does he bring back to a It
just I don't know, man, It's a tough situation. You know,

(27:12):
these last three four games for teams that aren't in
the playoff, But it's all about evaluation. You know that,
and so they want to evaluate not only the quarterback position,
but there's gonna be some stuff defensively they do. There's
gonna be stuff offensively they do. They need to really
evaluate the last you know, twenty twenty five guys on
the roster of that fifty three, and I don't think

(27:33):
they want two out there doing that.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
What should the Chiefs approach be for next season? Man?

Speaker 8 (27:41):
You know, we talk about I have a lot of
really good friends in the Chiefs organization, from the GM
to the quarterback coach to those like a lot of guys,
and when you talk to these guys, it's just like
a little bit of like unknown, like why aren't we
doing this? And why aren't we doing this? And how

(28:02):
are we not winning? And you look at it, Dan,
and it comes down to and I've really tried to
study it, because when you look at them offensively and defensively,
they're they're not.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
Like awful, right. They don't have a run game right.

Speaker 8 (28:15):
And I think it's a lazy take to just say, hey,
it's just the offensive line. They drafted the first round pick,
they have one of the best sinners in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
They got to stay healthy. They paid the right tackle.

Speaker 8 (28:24):
And it's just one of those things where I boil
it down to be like they aren't great in one
score games, and I think they were eleven zero last year.

Speaker 3 (28:31):
They're one and seven this year. And that's a huge
part of this deal.

Speaker 8 (28:35):
If you win four of those seven games, you're in
the playoffs. Now, Mahome's hurt and it's brutal, and I
think this might be the best thing to happen to
the Chiefs. Everyone wants to talk about, like, hey, you know,
the dynasty's over and this and that, and you know,
Trey Wingo got on Twitter and said, hey, you know,
nice season. Tom Brady tears his ACL with the Patriots

(28:57):
iety and then Mahomes theres ACL. It's just a different
version gonna be moving forward. And I just think that
Brett Veitch, when you win Super Bowls and you've been
in five of the last six, you've been in seven
straight AFC Championship, you've had story book seasons every year.
First of all, they played I think twenty three extra games,
almost a season and a half of extra games in

(29:19):
seven years, So the tiredness plays into it. However, a
lot of times you're just like, let's.

Speaker 3 (29:23):
Run it back. Let's run it back, Let's run it back.

Speaker 8 (29:26):
And they've drafted well, but they got to get rid
of some older guys. They got some key decisions to make.
They got to sure up that defensive line. As long
as they have Spags and Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes,
I think they're still gonna be fine. They're gonna make
the playoffs next year. Like it's not gonna be one
of those things where, hey, you know, it's just a
different version of the dynasty in my opinion.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
Yeah, but when people make that comparison with Brady and Mahomes,
Mahomes needs his legs. Tom doesn't. Tom didn't get slower.
He was slow. Mahomes he was their leading rusher. He
was the guy who got those big plays. It's different
for him. And with that kind of surgery, you know,
it's an LCL and an ACL and you're having it now.

(30:07):
Tom got injured at the beginning of the season when
he blew out his ACL, so it's you know, it's different, and.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
It is totally different.

Speaker 8 (30:16):
And here's the thing though, I think it'll be good
for them because they're gonna have to fix the run game.
Like they're not gonna have to rely on Mahomes anymore.
And yes, Mahomes like to move around. Remember I mean
three or four or five years ago, when Mahomes did
his kneecap, Yeah, and a quarterback sneak, and everyone and
their mom thought, oh, he's gonna miss the rest of
the season.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
I think there was I think it was a maybe
Chad Hinny.

Speaker 2 (30:38):
That was a quarterback.

Speaker 8 (30:39):
He was back in two weeks, and so the ability
to get back into train and ACL and LCL is
completely different than a kneecap.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
But everyone thought that was gonna be the end of
the world. I mean, he's gonna be pushing up to
the season.

Speaker 8 (30:50):
I don't think he's He's obviously gonna have a brace
on and it's not gonna be able to move him.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
But if anyone can heal fast, I think it's Mahomes.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
When do you start chopping up the college quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (30:59):
Yeah, that'll be after Christmas.

Speaker 8 (31:02):
So I got to get through this bowl game, Independence Bowl,
and then as we get into the start of the playoffs,
it's it's those It's those three at the top in
my opinion, Dante Moore, Fernando Mendoza, and there's a few
more that I want to look at for potential. Ty
Simpson is one of them. I think he sort of
played his way out. But those are the three now
with the Arts Manning going back, and there's some other

(31:24):
like under the radar type guys, but that'll be at
the end of the end of the season for sure.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
Have the Saints seen enough that they would not be
in the quarterback market with the Shuck?

Speaker 8 (31:36):
Look, I know the people down there, and they've been
extremely happy with Shuck's development, and honestly, I think they
probably should have played them a little bit earlier, if
I'm being honest.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
With you, just to see what they have.

Speaker 8 (31:49):
I think there's enough, there's enough tape on film to
be like, hey, all right, we're good now.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
If you have a high first round pick, though, and if.

Speaker 8 (31:58):
You can get into that top three, I mean, you
have to look at Fernando Mendoza, you have to look
at at Dante More.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
I think Shuck's good.

Speaker 8 (32:08):
But you know, it's gonna be interesting to see what
happens with the head coach. I mean, the head coach
is staying down there and more. But I think I
think you're good. I don't know, there's so many other
holes on that roster that you need to fix.

Speaker 3 (32:23):
But he's done a really nice job.

Speaker 8 (32:25):
I mean, if you've really broken down the film and
watched it, and his growth has been tremendous.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
Have fun in the Independence Bowl. Happy holidays to you
and always great to talk to you. Appreciate you.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
Dan.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
That's Chase Daniel The Mothership and also the Athletics Scoop
City with Diana Rassini. That great podcast and you can
check out the Chase Daniels Show on YouTube. I'm surprised
that he said he put down, put up the breakdown
of Philip Rivers, but not many views. Maybe it's more

(32:57):
of the media that was excited about this and maybe
the fans weren't. And I think he was being honest.
There were a couple of passes that Philip threw to
the sidelines and I thought that that's bad, that's not
good football at all. But what he's saying, and this
is what defenses are going to do. They're going to

(33:19):
force him to throw things to the sidelines because hey,
he's going to throw it out there and somebody's going
to pick it off and take it back. But as
far as breaking down a game and changing a game. Really,
the key was the Colts defense held Seattle in check,
because without that you're not scoring enough points normally to

(33:39):
win a game. But the defense played really well. And
if Philip is not getting sacked and you're not having turnovers, okay,
you're going to stay in a game. It's going to
be close. Seattle pouldered out at the end. But I
thought maybe more people would be interested in Philip Rivers.
I think it was more of a media creation than
it was a fan creation. That we've been hyped up

(34:01):
about him because most of us in the media are
old guys. We're like, ah, man, he's a couple of
years younger than me. He's a couple of years older
than me. We'll take a break, phone calls coming up,
settle on a poll question, and our play of the

good morning, what's on your mind?

Speaker 5 (35:28):
Hey?

Speaker 9 (35:29):
Dan?

Speaker 10 (35:29):
You know what I thought, maybe when I first called
in what was important it might now be gong or worthy.
So I'm just gonna preface it with that. Yesterday, when
you guys do the section at the end of the
show or what we learned today, the one part I
thought maybe one of you guys would have said was
when Jim Harbaugh said, you know, back when he was younger,

(35:51):
his dad would let him outside with the rest of
the kids and then click the door behind them.

Speaker 2 (35:56):
Okay, yeah, yes, we all got our what we learned wrong? Yeah,
what we learned is what we learned wasn't correct Sounds
like that's what you learned, mourning to Jim in Michigan.

Speaker 4 (36:09):
Yes, there was a I think the turning point of
remember in summer you would spend your entire summer outside
and try stout as late as possible. And then like
Atari was invented, and those video games are invented, and
that's the turning point of when kids said more time
inside than outside.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
Probably, yeah, but we didn't have Atari.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
No, I'm saying you never Gym did with this. No,
definitely Jim did.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
So yeah, kick him outside and you un lock the
door and you stay out there. Yes see.

Speaker 6 (36:35):
Yeah, it was like maybe the turning point, like Paul's mentioning,
was that's when you started getting yelled at for staying
inside too long. There's like mom and dad would be like, yeah,
playing video games all day, so get outside.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Yeah, in the summer. My mom said, if you're inside
when I get up, you're working. So we were out
the door at seven seven am and didn't come back
until dinner. Chris and Syracuse, Good morning, Chris, what's on
your mind today?

Speaker 11 (37:01):
Thanks?

Speaker 9 (37:02):
Dan, got a couple of things to throw at you. Yeah,
last weekend another breaking in sports, especially in the NFL.
The rash of home invasions while players are on the
road is a real problem, and I believe years ago
Sean Taylor actually lost his life defending his home. And
I don't know what they could do, but I wish
the NFL would try teaming up with a place like
simply Safe home security Systems to maybe at least help

(37:24):
mitigate the problem. And I am a really big Nick fan,
and I'm with you, I don't want to see a banner.
The only thing really I liked about this tournament is
that the players, I believe each get five hundred grand each.
Nice for the guys on the end of the bench.
And Brunson said last night that the Knicks were going
to give their team managers and trainers part of the money,
So that's good. But I am excited about raising a

(37:46):
real banner in June. And this team reminds me of
those seventy championship teams. Dan, You know, you had your
point guard and center, your two stars. They had Clyde
and Read in the seventies, and this year you got
Brunson and Cat and then guys like the Bush and Bradley,
who do a little of everything, played some defense, and
this year we got Bridges and Anobi and Josh Hart

(38:08):
and especially Anobi. I that guy is so unique the
way he plays. And Gretzky always used to say, I
don't want to be where the puck is. I want
to be where the puck is going to be.

Speaker 3 (38:18):
And that's old.

Speaker 9 (38:19):
Gyenobi with a basketball. His anticipation is incredible.

Speaker 2 (38:22):
Well, thank you for that observation. Chris Lucas in Texas,
Hey Luke, Hey.

Speaker 12 (38:28):
Dan, good morning, good morning. I know that we're still
a couple of days out from the weekend, but I'm
looking forward to a most must win game of the weekend.
And I don't want to put too much pressure on
James Madison and Tulane. I understand that they're thereby their
definitions of success. They have a successful season making the playoffs.

(38:52):
I just feel like if there is not a Boise
State beating Oklahoma type upset soon, there's gonna be a
lot less pays for a team's like Notre Dame sitting
on the sideline while a team like James Madison gets
blown out by Oregon. I think if that game isn't close,
or if there's not an upset, I feel like we're
gonna be saying that that Oregon game on Saturday night,

(39:13):
we would much rather be watching Notre Dame out at
Addson rather than than the Dukes.

Speaker 2 (39:18):
Yeah, and then Joel Klatt, Fox college football analyst had
this to say about Cinderella's the reason.

Speaker 11 (39:26):
The group of five is included in this playoff is
to avoid antitrust litigation. That's it, guys, like, we're not
looking for a Cinderella. Nobody cares in football about James
Madison or you know the equivalent of George Mason going
didn't George Mason go to the Final four or something?

Speaker 2 (39:42):
Yes, nobody cares in football. And he's I mean, he's right,
he's saying the quiet part out loud because there's part
of us that's like, well, they you know, let's reward somebody.
If they did what you're supposed to do, then you
reward them, whether it was Boise State, Arizona State last
year and you got James Madison in Tulane, but the

(40:05):
NCAA tournament March Madness. We're fine with the upsets early
and then once it gets to the sweet sixteen or
the Elite eight. That's when we go, Okay, guys, now
the grownups take over. We want to see the best teams.
We want to see the best teams in college football play,
and can we get to the point what you're still

(40:26):
going to have these teams like James Madison in tu
Lane make the playoffs. If you go to sixteen teams, now,
you're going to make sure that you do get probably
the fourteen best teams in college football, the thirteen best,
and you're going to get a couple of these Oh wow,
that was a great run, like Liberty or you know

(40:46):
some of these other schools that had, you know, meteoric rise.
But I just think there we're going to have this.
I don't think it's going away, at least not anytime soon.
