Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
We did it. We made it to a Thursday Dan
and the Dan. It's Dan Patrick Show. It's our one.
Come on in Marvin, getting a height and weight bell
ready because little Winston Patrick eight pounds five ounce. Yep,
moms turn yesterday. Mom and baby are doing well, so
that was a nice little surprise. Winston Patrick into the

(00:27):
world yesterday afternoon. Yes, Paul instant reaction on the name
Winston Patrick. That sounds almost senatorial, Senator Winston Patrick. I
like it. Well. My wife is a Winston Churchill fan,
and my son's middle name is Winston. Although it's weird.
I have a dog named Winnie, so that might get
a little complicated as well. But mom and baby are

(00:49):
doing quite well, and last I look, my son was
doing well. We'll get phone calls coming up. Got a
lot to cover today. It's a great day. Thunder close
out the Timberwolves and now you have Pacers in the
next game five, as Indiana tries to close out the
Knicks and head to the NBA Finals. The Knicks are

(01:09):
favored by four at home. I hope that they can
deal with the pressure of seeing famous people in the audience.
Apparently that's a new thing. I did not know. But
we're coming up with excuses why the Knicks can't somehow
win games at home. Eight seven to seven to three,

Dpadanpatrick dot com Twitter handle ATP show. Good morning. If
you're watching on Peacock. That's our streaming partner, the comedian
David Spade. A little later on today, Tim Legler ESPN
analyst will stop by as well. It wasn't pretty, but
Oklahoma City tends to do that to you, as they
shut down the Timberwolves from the start, Minnesota scoring just

(02:34):
nine points in the first quarter. SGA had a business
like thirty four. The Thunder have four wins by thirty
or more points this postseason, first NBA team in history
with four playoff wins of thirty or more in a
single postseason. The previous record three wins of thirty or

(02:54):
more the twenty sixteen Cabs, the ninety six Jazz, and
the nineteen eighty six Lakers. Stat of to day brought
to you by Penni America, the official trading cards of
this program. But nine first quarter points. So in the

(03:17):
last thirty years, there have been a total of six
teams who have held somebody to fewer than ten points
in the first quarter of a playoff game. The Thunder
have done it twice this postseason. They held Denver to
eight first quarter points in Game four the second round.
They played great defense. I know that people aren't going
to tune in to watch great defense, but Okase, he's

(03:39):
just trying to win a title. You know, you don't
get style points. Nobody cares about that. If you're winning
a championship. It's not kind of how you did it,
it's just that you did it. And if it means
SGA get you thirty five a game, you play great defense,
and you hopefully get support from your supporting player, and

(04:00):
that's what's happened so far. Indiana the same way. And yes,
you're gonna have people who probably don't watch basketball on
a regular basis who are gonna lament the fact that
if it's Indiana against Oka sick. That's fine with me
because you probably aren't watching anyway, those who are watching
will and those who are fans, and you'll be curious.

(04:22):
You'll be curious to watch Tyres Haliburton and SGA. We
keep trying to look for the face of the NBA.
Who's the next face of the NBA. Well, it's Anthony Edwards. No,
he doesn't want to be Can Jason Tatum be it? No,
he's a great player, he's just not you know, a star, SGA,
great player, not a star. You know, there's there's only

(04:44):
a few of them. And we've talked about this and
it's not meant as a knock. I'm just giving you
the reality of will you stop if somebody's playing on
TV and go huh okay, or you'll seek out that player,
or you would actually buy tickets to go watch some play.
I mean Jokers great, there's a curiosity to him. I

(05:04):
don't know if he's got star power. I think there's
it's curiosity power. Luca has star power, Lebron still has
star power. Steph Curry still has star power. And we're
trying to anoint the you know, Yannis still has it.
We're trying to anoint somebody as the next the next
we keep it doesn't take long before we move on

(05:26):
from somebody, and then you move on to the next guy,
and then who's the next guy? Anthony Edwards is not
ready for it. He doesn't want to be the face
of the NBA. But because you get drafted higher, it's different.
You know, look at these some of these guys who've
been drafted mid first round, you know, Jannis Kawhi, you

(05:46):
know they they weren't rushed to be anything. They were
allowed to be something we wanted, indeed to be great
right away. He wasn't ready, wasn't healthy, Anthony Edwards. You know,
when you're drafted that high, it's like, okay, we want
to see what you have you get the pleasant surprise,
you know in the mid to late first round or
even second round with a joker, and I think we

(06:08):
don't allow these plays. Anthony Edwards is twenty three, so
he got to be fair to the timeline here. It's
just sometimes you see a pocket of greatness. And then
because we were looking for the next Jordan for how long,
Well we're still looking for the next Jordan. Anthony Edwards,
he reminds me of Jordan. No, not me, not yet.

(06:28):
I saw Jordan and there's nobody Jordan reminds me of Jordan.
That's it. There's nobody on the list where you go.
You know, he kind of looks a lot and remind
he plays like, yes, Paul, you.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Know, Kobe was really close and it was really overt
like he imitated Jordan. He studied Jordan and his game
offensively was a lot like it. His mannerisms were a
lot like it. Kobe came really close.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah, he wanted to be Mike. He studied, he wanted
the mannerisms, everything about that. He came pretty close too,
came pretty close. But Anthony Edwards was asked after the loss,
if this hurts.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
It's eciding. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
I don't know what people would think he would hurt.
I mean it's exciding for me. I'm twenty three. I
get to do it a whole bunch of times. I'm
hurt more so for myself for Mike. I came up
short for Mike. Like I said, we tried last year,
we couldn't get it. We try again this year. I'm
wanna try again next year. But hurting is a terrible
word to use.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
I'm good, Okay, nobody's gonna work harder than him in
the offseason. Good And okay, see did show him the
ultimate respect because you have lou Dort who was just
face guarding him. This used to be called a box
in one where you had one guy on one guy
and then the other four playing pretty much as though.

(07:44):
And that is the show of respect. But still, Anthony
Edwards didn't get any further than he was last year,
and Luca took his team to the NBA Finals. They're
around the same age, lucas a couple of years older.
But you know, we're expecting young players. Cooper Flag coming
in next year at eighteen nineteen years of age, he

(08:04):
won't have that expectation because he's going to Dallas. He
won't be the focal point when he's there. But a
lot of these players when you come in, what are
you going to do for me? Now? You know Victor Wembenyama,
because the team isn't very good, he gets a little
bit more of a runway there. But at certain point
it gets to be three years, four years in then

(08:26):
you're like, are you gonna win a championship? We were
doing that now at an earlier age than ever. And
speaking of age, OKC is the second youngest team to
go to the NBA Finals. Everything seems to be lined
up for them to create a whatever the modern day
dynasty is, they should be there. They're consistent. You have

(08:49):
you know, it's hard to get guys to play defense.
Everybody wants to play offense. But when you have a
philosophy team philosophy that is defense. And this is the
spurs a lickxer. This is the magic potion. For Greg
Popovich with all of those great teams that he had,
they wanted to play great defense. And you have to
want to play defense. Nobody wants to play defense, but

(09:13):
when you do, and it's contagious. We talk about offense
when somebody's you know, clicking and then somebody else's clicking.
Defense is you know, that's that's contagious, Like damn, he's hustling,
he blocks shot, you know, coming up with a steel
like just whatever those little things are. And okay, okay,
see has done that, yes, Marvin.

Speaker 6 (09:34):
And being a defender pays in the NBA, like the
term three and D guy Jye McDaniels makes a hundred
million dollars isay, a hards time makes thirty million dollars
a year now, So it pays. So I'm just not
understanding why people were like, well, I don't need to
play defense because it pays in the NBA. They're paying
people at the Wazoo.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Pacers at the Knicks, and the Knicks are giving four
in Game five coming up tonight, all right, poll question seating,
what are we going to do first downur the program? Exactly?

Speaker 7 (10:03):
What is the Wazoo will be our first pull?

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Question? It is? It is? Yeah, yeah, it's the one
that we all use, but never question like who said,
oh you know what, I'm going to refer to that
as the Wazoo checking can you check and see how
we came up with Wazoo on it frizzy but.

Speaker 6 (10:23):
Old Washington State University thing.

Speaker 8 (10:25):
Probably not.

Speaker 6 (10:27):
That's why they call themselves too, don't they.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah, wazoo up the Okay, what else do we have?

Speaker 7 (10:32):
See, let's see, we got a couple here from the
to dub boom as well, start there intentionally walking about
in the first inning. It strategy or bush league, it's
a great one. Do you believe Caleb Williams wanted to
be a Chicago Bear and loves being there? Sure? Definitely
not old boy Stefan Diggs. I don't know if we're

(10:54):
ready to get into that just yet.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Man, I like I like Stefan Diggs. Every time he's
been on with us, he's entertaining. But man, you have
to confiscate everybody's phones if you're gonna be on your yacht,
it's that's the first thing you do. Uh, we're not.
We're not on display here. Everybody loves to record everything,

(11:22):
you know, we got to chronicle everything. I don't have
to chronicle that, you know. I don't think he's married,
although any going out with Cardi b is that Marvin
is not drama. See, I don't you don't need that
she was there.

Speaker 7 (11:41):
And putting on way more of a display than Steph was.
So uh yeah, she was there in all of her
CARDI b neis.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Oh, oh okay. But he pulls out some packet that's
got something pink in it. Up on what the kids
are doing now, But seeing any idea on what that
substance powder, whatever it might have been.

Speaker 7 (12:10):
I assumed it was kool aid or fundp What it
was some type of powdered sugar, candy, sweet treat, sweet tarts. Yeah,
it's crushed up sweet tarts. Maybe he likes to put
it on his toast. I'm not really sure.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Oh I'm not really.

Speaker 7 (12:28):
Sure why you would ask me about that either.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Up the wazoo that's where that powder goes.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
According to dictionary dot com, the first usage of up
the wazoo, University of California Berkeley humor newspaper called it
let's run it up your old wazoo, meaning your backside.
But the actual definition these days is to extreme degree
or in great abundance, like I've got money coming out
my wazoo. It means you have a lot of something.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Okay, you didn't think we were going there this early
in the show, but here we are. Yes, thank you
for that all right? Any other pole questions here, we'll
get to the Bears situation with Caleb Williams. This story
is actually a couple of weeks old. Seth Wickersham has
a book on quarterbacks and you had a quote in
there his father didn't want his son to go play

(13:22):
for the Bears. That's where quarterbacks go to die. So
we'll talk about that. Caleb Williams addresses that he address
that yesterday. Anything else that we can at least do
a drive by on.

Speaker 7 (13:33):
Yeah, we're going to actually start with this one from Marvin.
When did the Timberwelves book their flights to can Kun pregame,
halftime or right after the game ended? That's going to
be your hour one pole question.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Wow, well, see, you got to put up a fight.
This is one of those that you could have had
a really good year in Minnesota. You had a really
bad couple of weeks here. Therefore, this feels like a disappointment.
It didn't feel like they were closer to the NBA
Finals and case's only going to get better. And if

(14:02):
you're in Minnesota and you know you got the Dante
di Vincenzo and Julius Randall and see it kind of
changed the look of your team. You traded away Karl
Anthony Towns, but it didn't feel like they were ready
to take that next step. And you know, okay, see
impeded that next step, that's for sure. And for Shay

(14:23):
Gilgess watching him last night, he's gonna get a bucket.
He's gonna get wherever he needs to get. And this
is what great players do, great scorers do. They know
you're going to try to take away one thing, and
then they know there's another move and another, so there's
three that they're thinking, Now, you just take your chances.
What are the odds I'm going to get help? Here

(14:44):
sga off the dribble is going to get where he
needs to go. It's remarkable to see. And you know,
he's not a three point shooter. He's a you know,
the master of the mid range jumper. But he can't
get to the hoop. It's not exciting, but it's just greatness.
That's what you're seeing. You're seeing a truly great player

(15:06):
on display. And I do have the list of players
who have won the MVP and went on to win
the NBA title, and this is in the last twenty
five years. I'll have that for you. We'll take a break.
I'll see if you guys can I'm taking Jordan out
of the equation here, okay, because Mike did it a
couple of times. Perhaps you've heard of him, Michael Jordan.
All right, we'll take a break. Got our poll question

(15:28):
ready to go. Glad you're part of the program. We're
back after this.

With the excitement of my second grandchild. Yesterday, I forgot
to introduce the starting lineup. It's the Minister of Humor, Fritzie.
It's seat, and it's Marv Paulie, yours truly and the
back room guys. All right, so we settle on a
poll question. Phone calls always welcome each seven to seven
three DP show. The pacer is trying to close out
the Nick tonight. But if they can get it done,

(17:02):
you're going to have an NBA Finals matchup that's built
on one of the more unexpected foundations imaginable. Paul George.
That's right, Paul George, who hasn't played a single minute
for either OKC or Indiana in the last six years,
and he's the secret ingredient in the NBA Finals. Let
me explain. So back in twenty seventeen, Indiana traded Paul

(17:22):
George to OKAC in exchange for Demonte Sabonis and Victor Oldadipo.
Fast forward a few years later, Sibonis gets flipped for
Tyrese Haliburton and Sacramento and now the face of the franchise.
OKC followed a similar path. After two years with the Thunder,
Paul George dealt to the Clippers. That was a big
deal that sent Shay Gilgess Alexander in a boatload of

(17:45):
picks to OKC. Shay just won the MVPG and one
of those picks swaps turned out to be Jalen Williams,
an All NBA selection. So if the Pacers go to
the NBA Finals, does Paul George get a Playoffs share?
I mean, I I think he's well comping. Does he
get a ring? Doesn't matter whoever wins. Do they have

(18:05):
a ceremony where Paul George comes to town and they
give him a ceremonial championship ring? Yes, boy, I.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Forgot about the hot Halliburton angle of that trade for
the Pacers. Oklahoma City is still dining out on that.
They were in the lottery three years ago and they
still have draft picks coming in from the Clippers.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
They have more draft picks than just about every team.
I think they stockpiled these and Sam Presty, their GM
has done a wonderful job in building this team. They
got Chad Holmgren with one of those lottery picks a
couple of years ago. They're a young team and built
for success, immediate success and long term success. We'll talk

(18:45):
to Tim Legler the mother Ship. He will join us
coming up next hour. All right, here's something. How many
players have won the MVP in the same season that
they won an NBA Championship. Marvin, I'll start with you.
I'm taking Michael Jordan out of this. Okay, Okay, So

(19:06):
Mike's out of this MVP and UH went on to
win the NBA Championship. Olijan Keim Elijah Wan is a
no wait wait, Paul, I will go with Larry Bird.
Players who have won both the m v P and
the NBA Championship same year. I've got Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal,

(19:30):
Tim Duncan, Lebron James, Steph Curry. Now this is this
is in the last twenty five years. Oh, just to
be sare. Yeah, yeah, I'm dealing with kind of the
modern era of forgive the NBA or most recent So yes,
Larry Bird and Kim Alijah Wan that's me, that's e Mey.

(19:50):
I should have said that there's you know, context to this,
but so Jordan, Shack, Tim Duncan, Lebron, James, and uh
and Steph Kurt. But you can check and see. I
know Larry did it, did it, can do it as well?
Anybody else who's in there, magic magic did it? Yeah,
I think eighty seven. Okay, so this is from nineteen

(20:15):
ninety on. I guess starting with Michael Jordan. There, Bob Coosey.
Bob Coosey did it. Of course, you're idol the guy
that you patterned your game after Bob Coosey.

Speaker 7 (20:26):
Correct, that was the modern day Bob Coosey. That's what
they called me. Saint Mary's Regional High.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
School, they called you the coos Cooso's. Yeah, yes, Marvin,
I'm sure Bill Russell did it. Yeah, I'm good to guess. No,
but I'm talking about since nineteen ninety. You know what,
I didn't spend a lot of time and prep work today.
You know, I was all caught up and exciting. Correct. Yeah.

(20:51):
And it doesn't mean I'm mailing it in, but it may.
I may give the appearance that I today and I
don't mean to, don't mean to, but Fritzi, if you
want to scrutinize my my work ethic today.

Speaker 6 (21:03):
So when Winston situation for you, it's all.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
Good, yeah, yeah, yeah, but that was yesterday. Today every
day is super bowlt all right, great, you had a
grand kid, all right, you didn't have it.

Speaker 6 (21:14):
Now, but you're sharing it today, so you kind of
we have to celebrate that.

Speaker 7 (21:17):
We're first finding out that today.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
So a little excited.

Speaker 6 (21:20):
You have two days of celebration.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
Thank you, Todd, Thank you? All right? Uh Stephen in Dubuque, Hi, Steven,
what's on your mind today? Hey?

Speaker 4 (21:31):
Dan, first time, long time, five eight one sixty five.
I want to say congratulations to you on the birth
of your grandchild. Congratulations on that. And I'll be quick
on this, but this has been living rent free in
my mind for the last couple of weeks and I
want your guys to take on this if you could
help me out with this. So the New Orleans Saints
in quarterback Hunter Deckers a few weeks ago after the

(21:53):
NFL Draft. He played at Iowa State. He was parties
backup for a couple of years.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Well.

Speaker 4 (21:58):
He was one of thirty plus Iowa and Iowa State
athletes named in a gambling probe back in twenty twenty
three that resulted in him getting banned from the NCAA
that year. That year, away from football, he went to
Iowa Western Community College for a year, then the Saints
signed him two weeks after the draft. Statistically, he was
a giant amongst men at Iowa Western. It's common for

(22:21):
players to go from JUCO to d one like Cam Newton,
Aaron Rodgers, cam Ward, but not the other way around.
My question for you and the dan Nets, can you
think of another player to go right from junior college
or community college to the NFL. I'll hang up and listen.
Congratulations again on the birthday grandchild dances.

Speaker 2 (22:40):
Thank you, Steven boy. That's a narrow pathway there that
we're talking about, going from JUCO to the NFL. I
have to do some research on that. Not aware of that,
And I don't does the NFL punish this quarterback because

(23:01):
they've punished remember with Terrelle pryor with the Ohio State
with the tattoo scandal, and then didn't he get suspended
when he came into the NFL. Like you, if something
happens to you in college, then the NFL, I guess,
can discipline you. I think that's correct, that is.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
And that was a weird one at the time because
what jurisdiction did they have to punish someone from a
college violation?

Speaker 2 (23:25):
Yeah, and it was you know, he exchanged gear for tattoos.
Do you have somebody who's gun from JUCO? Somebody Marquis
who went from JUCO to the NFL?

Speaker 3 (23:34):
People I could think of Tyreek Hill played at West Alabama,
but I don't think that's a JUCO. And there was
a guy named Eric Swan many years ago played defensive
tackle for the Arizona Cardinals. He didn't play any college football.
He like he had like that Sean Kemp situation where
he was in college but never played or something like that.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
I can't think of a JUCO. Well, look, Eric Swan
deep cut that it's a big dude, big dude, all right,
seven to three. D P Show Email address Dpatdanpatrick dot com,
Twitter handle at DP show. The Panthers closed out the Hurricanes,
the Oilers Stars Game five coming up tonight. Don't look now,
but Florida is dominating in hockey. You went from the

(24:13):
Lightning going to three consecutive Stanley Cup Final and then
after that it's been the Florida Panthers who are now
going to their third consecutive Stanley Cup Final. We mentioned
a little bit about the book that is coming out
on quarterbacks. Seth Wickersham, who does a great job, did
a lot of New England Patriot based books, but he

(24:34):
has one on quarterbacks and there is an excerpt in
there attributed to Caleb Williams and his dad where his
dad's talking about he didn't want his son to go
to Chicago, that's where quarterbacks die. Now, this came out
a couple of days ago, and this might be the
first time Caleb Williams got in front of the media
with OTAs and he had this to say about that quote.

Speaker 10 (25:00):
Through all of you know, what was you know, going on,
through all of what happened, and you know last year
and in previous years. I think that was enticing. I
think that was something that was was was clearing to
me that you know, I wanted to come here and
you know, be the guy and be a part and
be a reason on why you know, Chicago Bears turned
this thing around. So that last thing that was said

(25:21):
and all of that, I think was the most important
thing is that I wanted to be here. But I
love being here. I love my teammates, you know, I
love all the people that that got me here.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
All right. So that's Caleb Williams. The book is American Kings,
a biography of the quarterback Seth Wickersham of the Mothership.
He describes how Catob's dad, Carl Williams, ask attorneys to
find some way to work around the NFL's collective Bargaining agreement,
exploring UH signing with the United Football League and considered

(25:52):
publicly ripping Chicago and the Bears just to make sure
they didn't draft him. And he says in the book
cargo is a place quarterbacks go to die. Now the
quote used to be attributed to wide receivers, which Chicago,
Chicago is where receivers go to die. But here and

(26:12):
the reason why they may have gone to die. Is
that Chicago hasn't had great quarterbacks? Have they had a
four thousand yard passer in their history? PAULI never. The
answer is no. You know you had Jim McMahon. But
you know Jim was a wonderful college quarterback, and you
know they ended up winning a Super Bowl. Perhaps you've
heard the Bears won a Super Bowl. Haven't dined out

(26:34):
on that for a long time. But you know they
they were always defense and running the football. It wasn't
where they featured wide receivers and quarterbacks. So I don't
know if this is where quarterbacks go to die. That's
this starts in the front office. Who's doing the drafting here?
I mean they they haven't drafted. I mean they reached

(26:54):
for Trubisky. He kind of was a good quarterback, but
not a franchise quarter Who do you have? Give me
all the great quarterbacks who played in Chicago? So is
that because they walk in so Patrick mahomes all of
a sudden put on a Bear's uniform. Is he not
any good? And the answer that's silly, of course he is.

(27:16):
It's what kind of front office do you have who's
drafting these players? Not to mention the other players that
you have on the roster. Caleb Williams will be fine
this year, and they have a really good offensive minded
head coach and they started to fill out that roster.
Now he needs to make quicker decisions, not hold onto
the ball, don't get sacked sixty times, and they should

(27:38):
be a playoff caliber team. But if you look at
the list of great quarterbacks they've had, they go to
die there, but they weren't meant to live long to
begin with. And the wide receivers as well. Now you
don't want to go to Chicago if you're a receiver
because you're not going to play for a good quarterback.
Head coaching has been in a state of flux for

(27:59):
a long time there, So what kind of stability do
you have? And I think that you know, it's a
cheap organization, start at the top. I mean, there's a
lot here. But I don't believe that if you know,
put Joe Burrow in Chicago, you're gonna tell me he's
not any good. That's silly. He would be good, yes, Poon.

Speaker 3 (28:19):
It is interesting your angle on this that you're kind
of somewhat defending the Bears franchise in their history and
more blaming on picking the wrong players because a lot
of people think that that are almost understanding of Caleb
William's father being hesitant to let want his son going
there because of their history. Without designing blame to anybody.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
Yes, but I look at the front office here, they're
the ones who were drafting these quarterbacks. Paulie, give me
an idea, Give me the audience an idea. When you
run down, I'm just saying Pro Bowl quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
Oh, pro bol I mean only alternates, like Mitch Trubisky
was a Pro Bowl alternate. Eric Kramer was a Pro
Bowl alternate. Kramer's statwise, it's the greatest single season passer
in Bear's history, and he's kind of a journeyman. Cutler
had a couple good years, but even he couldn't break
four thousand.

Speaker 2 (29:08):
That's about it. Yeah, So once again, what are the
expectation levels when they're drafting a quarterback and therefore the
wide receivers. If you don't have a good quarterback, chances
are you don't have a good wide receiver. But Caleb Williams,
I think it's a great place for him because you
have a great coach there. They do have weapons, and
I think that they have built an offense around Caleb Williams.

(29:31):
Now this is up to Caleb Williams. And you know,
this ratchets up the pressure. When this book comes out,
this will resurface. He'll probably have to talk to the
media once again. Maybe his dad he issues an apology.
But this was a palace coup. They were trying to
avoid the Chicago Bears. I know he wanted to go
to Minnesota, but Minnesota was what fourth pick they took

(29:56):
JJ McCarthy. The Bears wanted this guy and they got him.
So I don't know if the story progresses from here.
Yeh see it is.

Speaker 7 (30:04):
It's a weird spot to be in to defend the
Bears as an organization while also saying, hey, they just
draft poorly. It's like it's like this, It's like, yes, exactly,
like you're the reason why it's so bad. But it's like, hey,
you can't really blame the Bears. I mean, they're a
good franchise. They just happened to draft poorly. Yes, that's
exactly what Dad is saying. That's exactly what he's saying.

(30:24):
They're a bad place to go because they don't know
what they're doing okay.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
But what happened first that you know had bad front
office or you had bad quarterbacks, and then quarterbacks didn't
play like they went to die? Right?

Speaker 7 (30:36):
Are the Browns making quarterbacks bad or quarterbacks making the
Browns bad? I don't know, but I think it's the Browns.
I feel I feel like it's the Browns.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
I saw her Joe Flacco. He's like, I'm not here
to be a mentor to these kids. They're probably asking
him by bym buy them beer. But he said, I'm
here to I'm competing. And then Kenny Pickett said, man,
I learned so much being in Philadelphia that I'm ready
to compete. Then I hear all Shador Sanders is lighting
it up in practice, So your guests as good as mine.

(31:08):
I do think Shador Sanders will be the starting quarterback
for the Browns at some point this season. Yes, Paul,
Let's say.

Speaker 3 (31:14):
You guys had a son who was going to be
the top pick of the NFL draft. Which team would concern.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
You the most?

Speaker 3 (31:19):
Let's say historically and maybe recently, Jets, Bears, Brown's other.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
I'd have to say, let's think about it now. Although
I always look at the top and the Jets ownership
is terrible, and I think it trickles down from there,
because if you're not a good owner, you're not making
good decisions, or you get involved in decisions you don't
trust the people you have in place. I don't think
it's an accident that the Jets are habitually bad. The Browns,

(31:50):
I don't trust that organization the ownership either. You know,
sometimes you can have the right people in place, but
then the people above the don't let them do their
job and therefore they're you know, kind of restricted. The
Raiders with Mark Davis, that's always something to keep an

(32:11):
eye on because you're not quite sure, you know, now
that you have Tom Brady in there, maybe maybe it's
a different feel in the building. But see, let's see,
so you had Browns and you had the Jets. Who
else the Bears Bears in there? That would concern you?

Speaker 3 (32:29):
I would say, you know, with Ben Johnson being hired
from the Allions, it kind of is like a current cleanup.
But their history is not great.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
No, but I'm going to trust Ben Johnson in this situation.
I'm going to look at the Bears differently because of
Ben Johnson and maybe Aaron Glenn is a task master
with the Jets and turns them around a little bit.
Kevin Stefanski, you know, might be on a make or
break year with that team, which might not be fair
to him, but usually get you know, three four years.

(33:00):
But he's got a quarterback situation that is not good.
Right now? What other team would Carolina be in there?
I don't trust that ownership there? Yes, yes, Ritzy.

Speaker 7 (33:11):
What direction of the Arizona Cardinals going in these days
before they have to post the Steelers' Super Bowl?

Speaker 6 (33:17):
Like, what's really going on with the Cardinals?

Speaker 2 (33:19):
Yeah? We keep waiting for them. We keep Marvin Harrison
Junior the third and uh, you know Kyler Murray And
this is the year and a couple of years ago,
didn't they start out through the first nine games that
they were really good and then all of a sudden
it just tailed off. But now I'd put Arizona probably

(33:39):
under that umbrella. Yeah, probably, all right, let me take
a break, update our poll results and our play of
the day.

Speaker 1 (33:47):
Right after this, be sure to catch the live edition
of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern
six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
Ap oh My God.

Speaker 2 (33:59):
To play of the day left, This is to play
on the day.

Speaker 11 (34:08):
Check this out, bark up ranks, We're going to find
that back ifee FORGINNYSCS and the Panthers take up for
three lead. What's seven thirty nine ago the third the
Panthers are back in front. Carnivurhegi upstairs. What a pass
from Barkoff and the Panthers once again in front.

Speaker 2 (34:26):
Here in Raleigh. Courtesy of the Panthers Radio Network. The
Panthers the first team to qualify for the Stanley Cup
Final in three consecutive seasons since well all the way
back to the Tampa Bay Lightning who played in the
Stanley Cup Final nineteen, twenty, twenty twenty one, and twenty
twenty two. So immediately preceding the Panthers seem would you

(34:48):
update the poll results from the first forty five minutes? Yeah?

Speaker 7 (34:52):
I would Uh right now, we just put up there
one from Marvin. When did the Timberwolves book their flights
to koon pregame, halftime or right after the game ended?

Speaker 2 (35:03):
Right now?

Speaker 7 (35:03):
Pregame? Unfortunately, mean spirited Lee is winning. I think it'll
balance out a little bit.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
Our Player of the Day brought to you by the
great folks at tire Rack Rover. Forty years, ti Iraq

(35:31):
what's on your mind today? Hey Dan, good to hear
your voice.

Speaker 12 (35:36):
Listen, Yesterday you said Larry Bird could potentially fall out
of the top ten, and I fell off my stool.
I think I'm glad you're retiring because I think you're
losing it.

Speaker 4 (35:45):
Bro.

Speaker 12 (35:46):
There's no way this dude falls out of the top five.
When when Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem, Magic, Kobe Jalen Rose,
Michael Cooper all say he can never fall at top five,
I'll take their opinion over most. Even Michael Jordan said
that Bird is parallel to me. I can't put them
ahead of me or behind me. And I don't know

(36:07):
if you've just seen Michael Cooper just came out and
said that the former Lakers, Kareem and Magic, they were
all in a room the other day, and it was
hard for them to understand why people are just now
realizing how great Bird was. And when AI in one

(36:27):
hundred years you asked them who's the greatest basketball player ever,
it's going to spit out Larry Bird because he's just
the greatest fundamental ballplayer ever. And Dan, I think you
need to do what Kobe did. Kobe used to say,
why are people thinking Larry's so great? He looks slow,
and he can't jump, and he's white. And he went
on YouTube and after going to Kareem and Magic, he

(36:50):
went on YouTube and watched four hours of Met Larry
Bird and put Larry Bird in his top fight and
said he can never get out. So when you said
he's going to drop out of the top ten, then
make a staff you to go sit on YouTube and
refresh your memory of what this guy did and how
great he was as an all around basketball player. I
respect your opinion because you know a lot about basketball.

(37:10):
But when you said that yesterday, Ibill sell off my chair.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Dude. So, Dean, how many NBA finals did you go
to to watch Larry in person?

Speaker 12 (37:20):
In person?

Speaker 2 (37:22):
Yeah? None? Okay, I did so I was there in
nineteen eighty four, so I at least got to see
him do these things. That's why same thing with Michael Jordan,
got to see those things in person. So I pride
myself in being able to have witnessed everybody except for
Bill Russell play all the greats. And I bring this

(37:43):
up because we want to put new in and I
don't know if Larry shouldn't fall out of the top ten.
What did I say about Larry when I said, let
me give you a six year window, and Larry is
going to match up with anybody probably in the history
of the game. I said, what if we just did
that all these great players, we look at a six
year window, then how do you rank these players? And

(38:07):
maybe the rankings different? Does Steph Curry get in there?
He's the greatest shooter of all time now and Larry's
not the greatest fundamental player of all time. Okay, Michael
Jordan as good a fundamental player. Let's be honest here.
Jordan played for Dean Smith. You had to be fundamentally
So you're not going to get any argument from me
on Larry's greatness and what he did and when he

(38:28):
did it on display. Wanted the ball all to that
I love it, but I don't know if somebody says,
does Tim Duncan belong in there higher than Larry Bird.
So that's where I think you have to be honest.
We live on memories and we all do. We hold
on for dear line. That's why nobody's going to say
Lebron is better than Michael Jordan. Well, his career, the

(38:50):
totality of his career is better than Michael Jordan's. So
there's always, you know, starting points. But when it comes
to watching Larry Bird, I got to see a lot
of it. So I respect your passion and your opinion,
but Larry might fall out at the top ten one day,

(39:12):
So thanks for that. Oh, I know, and you're entitled
to your opinion as well. We're kind of agreeing of
Larry's greatness. Does Joker? If Joker wins another MVP or
wins another MVP in another title, do you have a conversation?
I mean, Joker's doing things that nobody else has ever
done in the history of the game. Steph Curry doing

(39:32):
things that never been done in the history of the game.
You just have to be fair to today's player because
we all get caught up in our era, our generation,
and we hold on for dear life. Those are memories.
I understand all of that. I'm not saying Bird does
fall out. I think there's a chance that at some
point he does. I don't think that's, you know, blasphemous

(39:57):
to say, because I am respecting the accomplishments today's player
as well. Now, if you said I got my life
on the line, I need somebody to take a shot
for me. Larry's certainly on the short list there. That's
for sure game to win. Larry's on the short list there.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
Yeah, Pauling, Yeah, I think what you were saying yesterday
you were almost like analyzing like a stock. This is
how history is going to treat these guys. You weren't
dispatching Larry Bird's career. You're saying, hey, it was ten
unbelievable years. But the back injury. People may use that
against him down the road when they say Lebron played
twenty and Larry played eleven.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
But if I can look at Larry's a six year
window there, and I'll put it up against Lebron. In fact,
I'd take Larry's best six year run over Lebron's. But
Lebron's going to be, you know, recognized as the second
greatest player of all time. I understand all of that.
You know, we're already trying to move Bill will Chamberlain

(40:54):
out of the top ten, and we tend to do that.
Sometimes you forget about greatness maybe in a different generation,
because we validate, you know, we authenticate Bill Russell winning championships. Well,
Wilt played at that time an average fifty a game,
So you can't go, well, the competition wasn't any good

(41:16):
unless you use the argument against Bill Russell to say, yeah,
but you kept all your players and had a lot
of plumber and electricians in there. So it's just being fair,
that's all. And I apologize for using the how many
times did you see Larry play in the NBA?

Speaker 8 (41:32):
Boy?

Speaker 7 (41:33):
Yeah, you have right for that one, dude, Yeah I did.

Speaker 1 (41:35):
But I was there.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
I was there. I was there. I was there. I
was there in eighty four. Oh boy, all right, one
hour in the books, two more ago. I'm in a
great mood today instead, Yeah, I'm in a great mood.
