Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Made it to a Thursday. It's our one. Come on in,
stay a while, Marvin's here, Paulie, that's your front row,
back row, Seaton and Fritzie, and of course the back
room guys as well. We got football coming up ten
hours in counting until kickoff Miami and Ole Miss NFL
games over the weekend. Trey Young gets traded. Man, It's
(00:29):
not that he wanted out of Atlanta. It's Atlanta was
going to trade him, and I think he got to
pick maybe where he was going to land, and he'd
picked Washington for some reason. I don't know how many
options he had, but this is one of those where
you look at his stats. He led the NBA and
assists last year. Like you look at his numbers and
you go, of course, Trey Young's a great player. He's not.
(00:52):
He has great stats, not a great player, and obviously
a liability on defense. And you know, you go back
to Jordan Poole got punched in the face by Draymond
Green and got traded to Washington. It feels like if
you get traded to Washington, you are getting a punch
(01:12):
in the face but Trey Young decided that's where he
wanted to go. So now he's a member of the Wizards.
The artist formerly known as Trey Young. Yes, Paulie, you
want to get traded to the Washington Wizards. Do you
want to go to a quieter, less relevant place. Well,
Atlanta is not a great place for NBA basketball.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Atlanta has been threatening over the past decade here and
there and had some nice teams. The Wizards are ten
and twenty six.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yep. I you know, unless he wanted to go and
he could still be the main guy, He's not the
main guy on Atlanta anymore. He not the best player
on that team anymore. And they decided that you're going
to move in a different direction, and they've got some
young players. But I go back to the Atlanta Hawks
when Dominique Wilkins, when you had that great team and
(01:58):
going toe to toe with the Austin Celtics in the
Eastern Conference. You didn't get a great fan base. You
got fans who showed up to see the team that
was coming into town. And I was there when they
were playing in the Omni and I remember you could
stop over and move your way down to second, third, fourth,
row and watch great basketball, but you know, it's not
(02:21):
a great sports town professionally. Even the Braves. I go
back to when they were terrible, but they had a
nucleus there, like they had a lot of young talent.
They just weren't very good, but you could see where
they were going to be something. And you'd go to
Fulton County Stadium and I got to sit wherever I
wanted to. I was working at CNN at the time.
(02:43):
It's a college town. They love their Georgia Bulldogs, and
rightfully so. But Trey Young out of Atlanta, and this
is a guy gets you. Twenty seven and ten used
to be hard to find. Twenty seven and ten. Today's
NBA feels like it. It's a little more readily available,
believe it or not.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, Paul, there's one issue I got to bring up
before we move on to football. I saw an alert
yesterday with the Hawks trade. It said Hawks trading Tray
Young to the Washington Wizards in blockbuster trade.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah, one to block.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
I don't think he could use the word blockbuster.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Well, you have to have another decent player. CJ. McCollum
is not blockbuster.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
It's being thrown around a lot blocked.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
It's not a blockbuster. It's not a stunning trade. I
saw that headline. It was stunning that maybe he wanted
to go to the Wizards, like this is stunning. But yeah, blockbuster,
it was just a trade. This has been in the works.
You know last year there was talk of trading Tray Young.
But you know what those headline riders they got you
(03:43):
to click blockbuster deal.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yes, Marvin Luca going to the Lakers as a blockbuster,
that's a blockbuster, Tray Young. Oh okay, bull time got
to come up.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
With a lesser word. How about buster not blockbuster? Eh,
it's a bust. Just a trade, yeah, trade young, Ryan
Fitzpatrick he will join us on loan from NFL on
Prime and Jesse Palmer ESPN College Football an us will
join us as well.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
It's kind of like every model is a supermodel. Not really,
Oh I know there's a few supermodels. That's not every
trade is a blockbuster trade.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
And not everybody is a porn star, right, just character
actor in a porn movie. Yeah, sometimes you're a role player.
Sometimes Yeah, sometimes it's just a cameo. Thank you, Tom
MAT's too.
Speaker 6 (04:34):
Why have we got on this one?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Well, come up with the poll question, play of the day,
stat of the Day, all of that forthcoming. Good morning.
If you're watching on peacock, thank you for downloading the
opera they INBC Sports Network.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
As a male. Once they start showing your name and face,
you've become a star.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Eight seven seven three DP Show? Are you guys? Stark?
Peter North?
Speaker 7 (04:53):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Whoa, I'm breaking it down? I'm sorry?
Speaker 5 (04:56):
Am I still going with the wrong story? Left out
of the day?
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Brought to you by Pennini America, the official trading cards
of the DP show. Todd has wondered if you ever
wiped with a piece of dry toilet paper and wondered,
is this is as good as it gets? And I
said no, Todd, because the extra large plushable Dude Wipes
are available. Wetter is better available at Amazon major retailers nationwide.
Dude Wipe's best clean pants down? Come up with a
(05:22):
pole question. Oh, by the way, you know the whole
transfer portal here the Washington quarterback Demon Williams who signed
a contract with Washington and then all of a sudden
decided to put his name in the portal. I don't
know what the language is, but once again you got
all the grownups who have totally screwed this up, because
you can fix college football. I mean not totally, but
(05:44):
you can fix it that it works for everybody and
there's no gray area, and that's what you have. I
don't know if you sign a contract that a team
another school can't, you know, tamper with you. But LSU
was tampering with Demon Williams, the great court back, and
he signs a contract. Now he's in the portal, and
word is that he's going to end up at LSU.
(06:08):
I don't think you can punish the kid because he decided, yes,
I sign a contract, But now you're going to force
him to go back to Washington. It's just not going
to happen. They might penalize LSU for reaching out to
a kid who's signed a contract, but I don't know
what these contracts are like. They should be standardized that
if you sign the contract, then you are beholding to
(06:31):
that school for that year. Because he's probably getting paid,
got a signing bonus. He's going to have to pay
that back. But there's once again, this is going on
and it's going to continue to go on. And somebody says, hey,
I got an idea here. You'll get some smart people
together and you can solve a lot of this, whether
(06:52):
it's when the season starts, when the season ends, when
coaches can lead the transfer portal, nil electives, and it's crazy.
It is crazy out there and going to continue to
get until somebody says, hey, I got some ideas. Would
somebody listened to me. By the way, I brought up
the transfer portal with Brendan Soresby, he was Cincinnati's quarterback.
(07:18):
He's going to Texas Tech. I was initially told that
he's getting five million dollars a year. Now I find
out it's five point nine to eight, so almost six
million dollars a year to go to Texas Tech. Texas Tech,
I believe spent seven million dollars on their defensive line
last year, maybe their offensive line. But if I look
(07:39):
at cam Ward number one pick, he made eight point
eight million dollars, and you got Brendan Soresby's going to
make almost six million dollars. So cam Ward the number
one pick eight point eight seven million dollars in the NFL,
and you've got a quarterback in college making almost six
million dollars. And then you got the Layne Kiffin situation
(08:04):
where Lane is getting paid. If Old Miss continues to win,
Lane wins. Jimbo Fisher had some strong words to say
about Lane Kiffin leaving Old Miss when they were in
the playoffs and now at LSU. It's selfish, that's what
(08:25):
it is. It's stupid.
Speaker 8 (08:26):
And because here's why I say that, he wanted the
coach and thought he didn't get his way. So everybody
get on the plane with me. You don't have a job,
all right. He makes them all go. Then he gets
down there and takes a pr hit because it looks
bad that you really don't care about the kids. Then
he says, okay, you can go back. But here's where
he screwed up. He thought they were gonna lose. He
thought they were gonna lose a Georgia. Now the portal
thing was all over with, and it was gonna be
(08:48):
all over with. He said, oh, I'll look like a hero.
Now he's got egg on his face because the real
Lane came back out, you know what I'm saying. And
he's And if those guys were allowed to coach a
first game, they should be allowed to coach before. Because
those guys are doing those kids are doing something that
you get one time in your life to air or
do okay.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
The college football has created this situation. Why can't we
get to a point where the end of the college
football season if we make it earlier, and then Lane
Kiffin goes to LSU. He wasn't going to pass up
LSU great opportunity, I get it, but I wouldn't have
let him coach Old Miss. And now I think because
(09:24):
he took an incredible pr hit, that's when Lane goes, well,
i'll loan you, you know, the coaches back, and keep
in mind, reportedly when he was going to LSU said
to his coaches, you're either on the plane or you're not.
So they made a fast getaway and then all of
a sudden, I think Lane thought that Old Miss wasn't
(09:45):
going to go this far, that they would lose to Georgia.
And then hey, you know what, man, we had a
really good year and I wish them well and you know,
go Tigers, but you have this game coming up tonight
and if if you're Lane kiffen, I know if you win,
if Old Miss wins, you you win with money, but
(10:06):
you don't win. I don't think with public perception of
this because then it's going to be well, they're winning
without Lane Kiffin. Now he helped build this team. And
I'm wondering how we're going to look at what if
Old Miss wins the national title and they can they're
in the final four. How are we going to view
(10:26):
Lane Kiffin when it's all said and done. Is it
going to be Lane kiffen one national championship on his resume?
Does he get a national championship asterisk? Does he get
part of a national championship? Does he get a ring?
Is he part of the ceremony? But Lane miscalculated, Yes,
(10:51):
he was going to take the job. I think he
thought Old Miss was going to lose earlier. Therefore this
doesn't hang and it's there. And then when I saw
that Lane was maybe going to join the broadcast or
be part of the pregame, I go, no, no, let
these kids have their moment. You could have had it.
(11:12):
You chose to take the money and run, and then
you decide to loan out your assistant coaches, which that's
very generous. It's nice. I'm glad that those assistant coaches
are able to help. And I can't help but root
for Old Miss just because of the story. It's wild,
but I hope Lane knows stay in your lane. See
(11:34):
what I did with that ton very clever. Thank you,
Stay in your lane. Root from Afar. Hopefully you're rooting
for Old Miss to win and you also get a
million dollars.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Yeah, Paul, And this story could be in play for years.
If Old Miss happens to win the national title. I
think publicly Lane Kevin's going to get very little credit,
even though he built this program up. But if he
does not win a title at LSU and Old Miss
happens to win one, it'll be on his resume forever.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Oh okay. If Old Miss wins, well, even Old Miss
where they are now, LSU's got to match this next year.
Like it feels like the pressure and Lane knows that
Lane will recruit. Lane is a really good coach, but
he doesn't. He hasn't won anything when you think about it.
The Raiders was a mess, USC was a mess, Tennessee
(12:22):
was a mess.
Speaker 9 (12:23):
You know.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Old Miss. I thought, was man, stay there, and I
get it. It's easy for me to say something or
play with other people's money. I go back to that
documentary that The Mothership did and I if you would
have bet. I would say, Man, that guy is as
happy as he's ever been. But it's rare when you
find the coach who doesn't. And I liken it too.
(12:46):
If you've ever lived in New York City, you get
an apartment and you immediately start looking for your next
apartment because there's always going to be a better apartment.
And that's what coaches do. Hey, this is good. Wait
what's he getting? Wait? Is that going to be open?
And that's what Lane does. LSU's not gonna be his
(13:06):
final stop, but that's just who he is. He's always
going to be on the move. But I'd love to
have a camera on Lane Kiffin tonight as he watches
this game. Yeah, ton so in a purely honest moment.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
I know there's a little extra money attachment, but with
the kind of millions he's making, it's not gonna change
his lifestyle much.
Speaker 6 (13:27):
If they win in another game or two. Does Lane
kiffen want ole Miss to win tonight and win the
national title without him?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
We could talk about that, but that game coming up tonight,
it's ole Miss and Miami, and Miami to be as
physical like you go back to the U when they
were they were really physical. This team run the football
and they play defense. And to see Ohio State be
out physical, it's like watching Alabama against Indiana and you're like,
(13:57):
wait a minute, what is happening here? Well, this is
this is the new college football. All it takes is
you know a somebody really rich who wants to help
you change the roster. Mark Cuban is helping Indiana. You
got a billionaire helping Texas Tech. These kids don't want
(14:18):
to stay as the third string quarterback in Alabama anymore.
Oregon's got Nike. And as I told you, college source said,
you either have oil money or tech money. That's what
you need today. And if you're spending fifty million dollars
like you've got to keep up with everybody, it's it's
close to forty to fifty million dollars and it's not sustainable.
(14:43):
And the grownups allowed all of this to happen. Hey,
I applaud Brendan Soorsby to get almost six million dollars.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Good for you. I hope you produce. Yeah, Pauling, can
Warren Buffett help out Nebraska? They make some calls to
Uncle Warren. He's ninety five, he just retired.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
You know, I gotta help the oscars on you know,
do they need my helm? Yes, they do. They could
use your help.
Speaker 9 (15:10):
One.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
How about we take a break, got phone calls coming up.
Jesse Palmer and h or Is pretty likes to say
the dreamy Jesse Palmer. He'll join us a little bit later.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
Hours a private chatow on the public laundry.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
You watch Bachelor and Bachelorette. I do not. I do not.
Speaker 6 (15:27):
He's as handsome as ever on those shows. Let's call it.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
That's the problem. He's too handsome, too handsome, like the
host can't be more handsome than the batchelorah.
Speaker 6 (15:35):
The women want to get picked by him?
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Yeah, yes, Paul.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
It's like Brady with the Raiders. The best quarterback can't
be in the front office.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
Well, take a break back after this Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
Todd McShay Draft Expert put out his mock draft and
he talked about Dante Moore, the Oregon quarterback, and he
was saying, hey, if he was him, nobody wants to
play for the Jets. Well, if you're going to be
the second pick overall, Now, I would hope that Dante
Moore would go back and play a little bit more.
(16:47):
Because I've talked about this, I gotta have at least
thirty to thirty five starts, maybe even a little more
than that, to get a true sense of just how
good you're going to be, because too many teams make
this same mistake. Hey, that guy had a great season,
Trey Lance, Zach Wilson, that's not enough. You got to
(17:09):
have at least thirty to thirty five starts in college football. Now,
I can go to Bo Nicks, Jayden Daniels, they had
over fifty starts and you have that bonus COVID year though,
but Dante Moore, should he go back to Oregon? Well,
I'm curious the end result of the playoffs. Let's say
wins the National Championship. Could he supplant Fernando Mendoza as
(17:33):
the number one pick in the draft. It would be
really difficult to pass up on that. If you're Dante Moore,
and from what I've seen, he looks like he's a
really good quarterback. But you know the UCLA situation where
you get injured, you're not playing, and then you end
up at Oregon. Oregon can make you look a whole
(17:55):
lot better than maybe what you are. I mean, Dylan Gabriel,
they played a lot again games and they won a
lot of games. He's probably a career backup quarterback in
the NFL. Bo Nix went to a couple of different places,
and you're playing big time football. You know when he
transferred to Oregon and he's proven that he's probably a
(18:18):
franchise quarterback. Joel Klatt, Fox college football analyst, on the
advice that he would give to Dante Moore.
Speaker 12 (18:27):
If Dante Moore called me today and he said, hey, like,
what should I do? I wouldn't blink an eye. I
would say go back to school, because it's no longer
just a financial decision. He can make life changing money
at Oregon much less than National Football League.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Yeah, he had those comments with Colin Cowherd. Yes, you
can make four or five million dollars. Now you want
to get into that second contract when you get to
the NFL. But now you're kind of making that amount
of money. Three point five four four point five. You
(19:02):
got Oregon in the semi finals here, What if you
play for a championship? What if you win a championship?
But I don't see these kids going, hey, I don't
want to play for the Jets. Like, get some point
the Jets will be a decent team, competitive team. I
really feel that way.
Speaker 9 (19:21):
Now.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
It might not be in my lifetime, but I'm just
saying that there will be a moment where the Jets
can actually be formidable if they start making these smart
draft picks, these smart decisions here. But Dante Moore, I
haven't seen enough of him where I go, Boy, that
guy can't miss, Because it feels like every time I
(19:41):
feel like there's a guy who can't miss, he misses.
But that's why I go back to give me thirty
five starts now, I got a good sample size. But
going to the Jets, going to the Raiders, I mean,
nobody's saying to Fernando Mendoza, hey, don't go to the Raiders. Well,
the Raiders are just as much of a mess as
(20:01):
the Jets are. The Raiders had the worst offensive line
in football. You don't even know if Ashton gent is
going to be great. You know Bowers will be and
you might trade Max Crosby. So what do you got
do you go to the Jets? Okay, I mean the
(20:23):
pressure's on, but it's not like the pressure's on that
you got to be great. Hey, you just got to
be better than the Giants to start out with. The
Raiders are in the toughest, one of the toughest divisions
in football, But nobody is saying Fernanda Mendoza, don't go
to the Raiders. We know what he can do, and
(20:43):
we heard that from Dan Orlovsky. Like the ability to
be able to make these decisions at the line of scrimmage,
that's the NFL. I don't know if Dante Moore is
able to do that. Like Ty Simpson with Alabama, I
would say go back, but then Obama might say you
know what, you can go, we got another quarterback coming in.
(21:07):
That's what happens. It's quick because now you can get
a replacement. It doesn't have to be on your roster.
You can just put it out there and go, anybody
want to play quarterback at Alabama? Here's the price, and
then you're going to get a lot of applicants there.
It's not like, well, the backup is going to be there.
Fernanda Mendoza's brother is his backup at Indiana. They went
(21:31):
out and got another quarterback. He's not even guaranteed of
getting that opportunity. They're like, no, no, no, we're big
time football. Now, we got money. We're going to go
out and get another quarterback here. Yeah, PAULI do.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
You think Ty Simpson of Alabama looked at the landscape
and said, yeah, I'm the third best quarterback right now,
and that's a good position to be in in this draft.
I may have to go late first, early second, but
the downside is you come back like you said, and
you don't get the reins.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Yeah yeah, I mean we've seen this Drew Awler at
Penn State. Remember he was going to be a big deal.
He might be the best quarterback in college and then
all of a sudden he wasn't And does his name
come up at any point? It's quick, man, it's quick.
(22:21):
You're really good, you're the guy, and then you are
not the guy, or you get injured or the team's
not as good, and then you try to come back.
I get it if ty Simpson thinks that. And look,
you have he's probably had an agent for the last
three years. But if you're leaning on people to give
you information, and one of my sources has been asked
(22:41):
to give information to agents and he doesn't want to
do that because he has information that he has to
give to teams, not to agents, and the agents want
to know, Hey, can you give me a sense? Can
you give me a And that's what they that's what
they ask, Hey, where do you think best case scenario?
(23:02):
Worst case scenario? And do I think Ty Simpson wasn't
that long ago where we were talking about maybe maybe
late first round. Then all of a sudden you hear
he's probably a second day, third day draft pick here
and Paul, you're right. You know, if you're the third quarterback, okay,
(23:26):
chances are you're going to go a little bit higher
than you need to or you should.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
Yeah, Pauling, the Pittsburgh Steelers had the twenty first first
pick of the draft. That could be a position where
you go to a better franchise, a more stable franchise,
you might have a better chance to have a better career.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
I just don't know. I mean, I watched him and
he's smooth, but you know, you're at Alabama. It's kind
of hard not to be good at some of these
schooling like Ohio State. It's really I thought Justin Fields
was going to be a great quarterback because I saw
him in college and I go, he's a great quarterback,
and all of a sudden, you go, I don't know
(24:07):
if he could throw the football in the NFL? Yeah.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
Do you know if the type of agent that a
college football player can have is different than an NFL
type agent like.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
You're allowed to have like that.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
You know, there's a marketing agent that gets you like
brand deals, but that sometimes that isn't the same thing
as the agent who negotiates your contract with the team.
That's a different guy.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
I don't know that.
Speaker 13 (24:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
I don't know either.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
I wonder if there's a if there's a difference when
you're in college and like the the brand type marketing
agent helps with your NIL deals. But is there that,
like more traditional sports agent that would be negotiating contracts
and stuff.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Well, I would want to get in bed early, so
I would want to if I'm one of these big
time agents, I'll negotiate your contract at Alabama or Oregon
because then I want negotiate your contract when you get
to the NFL. I want to start early instead of
wait till you get to the NFL.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Yeah, Paul scenes right on this, and that there's different
types of agents. The traditional agent from like CAIA that
rep Patrick Mahomes and the top quarterbacks in the draft.
Then there's NIL specific agencies that have been just blowing
up in the past five years that handle college guys specifically.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Get some phone calls in here, we'll settle on a
poll question each seven to seven three DP show played
the day coming up as well. Ryan in Pennsylvania, Good morning, Ryan,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 9 (25:36):
Hello there.
Speaker 14 (25:41):
I just had two kind of questions. One would be
Lane kiffinst coaching for six years there at all, Miss.
I would wonder how many coaches have been at the
same place for six years, whether it's at the sec
or the big Man.
Speaker 9 (26:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 14 (26:00):
I was just curious because it seems like kind of
a long time.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
These days it is for Lane, But you're right, six
years is a long time. But that's where you get
to six years are you more likely to go or
less likely to go? And I thought Laine had kind
of figured it out, he had finally figured it out.
Now he's going to be. He's a villain. He's going
to be, and I'm fine with that. But he's going
(26:25):
to be. I don't know if there's other villains out there,
but you know he's coming to town and can't wait
for Lsu to play Old Miss in Oxford next year.
But six years that seems like an eternity nowadays. But
you're always wanting to be ahead of the situation. You're
(26:45):
always like that, that seems like it's better than this one.
What if I have an eight and five year how
many eight and five years can I have before they're
going to want to get rid of me? How long
can you be on scholarship? I mean, we see this happened.
It doesn't take long. It can be a year or
two years and all of a sudden we're like, yeah,
you know, what I'm trying to move on here, Chris
(27:08):
and Syracuse. Hi Chris, what's on your mind?
Speaker 9 (27:10):
Hey? Thanks? Dan?
Speaker 15 (27:11):
Yeah, a couple of comments off the Lane Kiffin. You
know what you guys were talking about, whether he's root
and for him to win tonight. I bet you he's not.
You know I heard something who knows if it's true,
but that he is purposely texting Charlie Weiss Junior during
meetings that he's in. So yeah, I would say he's not.
And I like Old Miss tonight. Their offense moves with
such pace and when they throw the ball they get
(27:33):
rid of it so fast. I think that will Negate
that Miami pass rush. And Dan, I'm echoing what you
were saying in the first segment. I totally agree. I
don't think lank Kiffen ever dreamed that Old Miss could
have made it this far, and if he did, he
would have stayed.
Speaker 16 (27:48):
And if Old Miss wins.
Speaker 15 (27:49):
The national championship, every year Lane Kiffin is at LSU
and they go without a title.
Speaker 13 (27:54):
He is going to be dogged by the fact that
he had won at Old Miss and he chose to
leave it the two minute warning for LSU, and he'll
never forget that. The media will never let him forget that,
and it really could define his coaching legacy.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
Thank you, Chris. Miami is favored by three and a
half tonight. Oregon is getting three and a half against
Indiana tomorrow night. Indiana is the big favorite to win
it all, followed by Miami Oregon, and then old miss
Michael in Ontario. Hey, Mike, what's on your mind?
Speaker 9 (28:27):
Yeah? Six three in a piece used to be six
five in a piece. A marathon is one point fifty
eight and eighty Come my next birthday in March. Anyway,
I go back to football when John McKay was tearing
my heart out at USC and Gary Began was winning
the Heisman Trophy when I was in college. But I
think that nil is going to end the SEC as
(28:51):
we now know, it is a real power conference, simply
because five of the ten poorest states in the United
States are up the SEC. Texas is the only in Georgia,
the only really affluent states. They just don't have the money.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
Well, all it takes is a billionaire, as I mentioned, Michael,
But thank you. Yeah, And once again, I'm just going
by what a source told me. You got tech money
or oil money, and if you don't have that, you
better have a sugar daddy who's willing to spend that
kind of money. And look, we wondered for a while.
Mark Cuban went to Indiana and he is a multi billionaire,
(29:30):
and we thought, man, is he going to get involved
in Indiana Indiana sports? And I thought maybe basketball? And
now the report comes out that he was helping finance
the Indiana football program. And that's all it takes. You
just got to get somebody to give you the other money,
because the other money separates you. That's where all of
(29:52):
a sudden, you can be on par with Georgia in
Alabama because it used to be they had money or
they had people who were willing to spend money, and
you could get players keep players. Now I mean Texas Tech,
they're spending money, They're spending oil money. You spend almost
(30:15):
six million dollars for your quarterback.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
Yeah, more t Boom pickets. He's coming from the grave
right now. Well, I'd said for years that's all it
would take. He wanted nothing more than Oklahoma State to
be a power and they had really a couple of
really good years.
Speaker 6 (30:31):
Yeah, but they just couldn't get over the hump.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
But that's why I thought. And there's so much money
that can be handed out without it being discovered, or
you know, we can do it in a clandestine way.
There's money, there's money to be made, and the players
know it, parents know it, agents know it, everybody knows it,
and they're going after it. But where does it stop?
(30:59):
Because is it sustainable? Can you continue to pay this
kind of money? Is Congress going to get involved in this?
You know, college football is waiting for Congress to help
them out, like they've made such a mess and they're like,
how do we get out of this Congress? That's what
they're waiting for Congress to clean this up. And it's
(31:21):
unfortunate except for I was told last night, do you
know how much time everybody talks about the NFL and
coaches hired and fired? All of this has nothing to
do with the games. Here we are talking about college football,
and it has nothing to do with the games. College
football loves this. College football has never had this kind
(31:42):
of attention. Now you can say, do you want kind
of messy attention? Now? There are people subscribe to the
fact that there's no such thing as you know, bad publicity.
I disagree with it, but college football is being talked about.
Speaker 4 (31:57):
Yes, Mark, college football has a WW type of feel
to it because the storyline might be better than the
game and that's all that's about.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Yeah, that's a good point. Yeah, Paul, I.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
Would argue back with that last college that's the SEC
will drop because some of the states in the SEC
aren't big money states. You only need one or two
billionaires to step up. And in the states like Arkansas,
the Walton family is involved. They've got unlimited funds. So
and also billionaires in the SEC states are much more
likely to be involved in their school or local school.
(32:28):
Kenny Dillingham of Arizona State last week said I need
a billionaire to step up. In Arizona, college football might
not be as big of a priority as it is
in Arkansas or Alabama or Mississippi or Georgia.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
Clearly it isn't well if the Walton family has given
money to Arkansas better that's for receipts. Yeah, yeah it is.
Arkansas isn't any good where you know when you'd spend
the money, like Kentucky would spend money in basketball years ago,
but they knew that that team was going to be
playing for a national championship. And I go back to this,
(33:01):
you know, mid seventies with Kentucky basketball. I mean, I
don't know what Adolph Rupp was doing, but you know,
I can only guess. You know, you were spending money
UCLA with John Wooden. You had a sugar daddy, I mean,
Kareem went from New York to LA you know, so
they always seem to get that great, great player or two.
(33:24):
How are they doing that? Yeah, we always looked at
John Wooden and we go, oh, Many's such a cute guy.
And you know, meanwhile, you had Sam Gilbert, who you know,
handing out money.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
Yeah, Marvin, I love Chamberlain going from Philadelphia to Kansas.
There's no college basketball lineage in Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Huh uh, let's take a break. Phone calls coming up.
Ryan Fitzpatrick will join us a little later on, and
uh who else is gonna join us? Oh that's right,
Jesse Palmer. All right, we're back with the play of

Speaker 5 (34:17):
This is the play of the day.
Speaker 8 (34:20):
Check this out.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Bobo Kellspeedley within battle the Barns quickly shit and Bearrett

Speaker 6 (34:27):
Let's quickly coming back up.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
Emmanuel quickly the game winner for the Raptors. That's courtesy
of FanDuel Sports Network. And I'm watching my Hornets and
I'm buying into the Hornets and then all of the Hornets.
They led for seventy percent of the game and then
they end up losing the game. It's your play of

their current schools for six years or more. Actually I'll
make it five years. Kirk Farrence He's been at Iowa
(35:22):
twenty seven years. Dabo Sweeney Clemson seventeen, Dave Dorn NC
State thirteen years, Jeff Monkin at Army twelve years, Pat
Nardozi at Pittsburgh eleven years, Kalani Satak at byu IS
ten years, PJ. Fleck Minnesota nine, Jeff Traylor University of Texas,
(35:48):
San Antonio six years, Brett Beilima at Illinois five years. Also,
here's a comp for you, is Lane Kiffen the John
Caliperi of college football. Now, cal Perry did win a
national championship, but John was at U Mass Memphis, Kentucky
(36:08):
now Arkansas much more successful. But you know, you get
that same kind of personality there. And John's doing a
good job at Arkansas, but didn't do a great job
at Kentucky. With all the talent that he reminds us
that I say to him, stop reminding people of all
(36:31):
the talent you had that you only won one national title.
Nobody cares that you got guys that have made a
collective billion dollars in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (36:40):
Yes, Marvin, if Lane Kiffin got Florida Atlantic to the
national title game, then all right, I would give you
that comparison, because look at what Cali party did you Mass,
You've been Amherst, I've been Amherst.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Yeah, Memphis.
Speaker 6 (36:54):
You haven't heard about them since?
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Yeah? Keith and Charlotte. Hi, Keith, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 7 (37:00):
Hey, Dan, thanks for calling me back again. Yeah, hey man,
why'd you have to bring up that Charlotte game last night?
Speaker 2 (37:07):
But I'll move on. That was a tough one to watch.
Speaker 7 (37:11):
Hey, So, I think I called around my birthday, which
was November the fifth, and I made a bet to
the group about the Panthers making the playoffs for a
pile of the face. You guys waffled a little bit,
or at least seat and waffled a little bit, and
then he looked up the stats and he eventually took
the bets.
Speaker 16 (37:29):
I think he owes me a pile of the face, pie.
Speaker 5 (37:32):
Of the face seating. Okay, sure, got an. I don't
remember a lot of the bets. I don't either, but
I probably did. Yeah, that sounds like something I would do.
I think I got to get.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
A designated pie guy that that he writes down all
of these bets. Paulio's a pie for the arch. Manning
is going to breeze to the Heisman and be the
number one pick in the draft. I don't know if anybody, yes, Marv,
oh you do you kind of Arizon? Okay, Yeah, I
(38:03):
think we have a way on.
Speaker 5 (38:04):
The website that we could actually start tracking then, Yeah,
I'm gonna investigate this a little bit. I think that
we actually have a way to track.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
These Mike in South Bend. Hi, Mike, what's on your
mind today?
Speaker 17 (38:16):
A little bit earlier you had talked about that the
n CULA is waiting for Congress to do something for them.
Is that, like the blind and eating the blind? More
dysfunctional than is us Congress?
Speaker 2 (38:31):
All right, thank you, Mike. I can only tell you
what I've been told that college football it's one of
those where you go, what happened? You know, It's like
you wake up after a long night of drinking and
you kind of survey the situation and you're like, what
happened here? It feels like that's college football. What happened here?
Speaker 17 (38:53):
Now?
Speaker 2 (38:53):
You need somebody to clean it up, You need a
fixer to come in.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
Yeah, Paul, I can remember we came in the day
after Manzell was on the cover of Time magazine maybe
twenty twelve, Time to pay college athletes, and we were discussing.
We're like, it's going to be at least five or
six more years or seven, and we thought it'd be
like some type of minimum wage to perform in your sport.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
We really did.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
I remember that show and then it went from zero
to one thousand, a zero to millions.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Yeah, yeah, and there's no end in sight because but
all you need is a couple of smart people to
get together and say, how about we saved college football
from itself? Jeff in San Antonio, Good morning, Jeff, what's
on your mind?
Speaker 16 (39:42):
Good morning DP. Thanks for the callboy. You have started
to go way off course today. But you guys were
talking about my Raiders last couple of days. I wasn't
able to get insis wanted.
Speaker 9 (39:49):
To get in real quick.
Speaker 16 (39:49):
Okay, you want to Alaski, you want Oloski saying it
could be like a three four years before they turn
it around. But we have plenty of evidence. You know Texans, Broncos,
Patriots Andanders they can turn it around a couple of years.
You know, Raiders have a chance to get a franchise TV,
a nice, young, offensive minded coach. We've got Tom Brady
in the room, plenty money in freegency. I think there's
(40:11):
some hope.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
You got to have a good organization. I don't know
if Tom Brady can make an impact as an owner.
I have no idea. John Elway didn't in Denver. You
got to get your coach, and these teams that you're
mentioning got their coaches and they got their quarterback. You
(40:33):
need an offensive line, yeah, the worst offensive line in football.
That's not easy to just go We're gonna have a
quick rebuild here. By the way, there are one hundred
and thirty six head coaches in FBS football as of
this morning. The average stay go ahead, PAULI, I'll let
(40:53):
you start, the average tenure of all one hundred and
thirty six FBS head coaches.
Speaker 10 (40:58):
Three point six years, Marvin two point eight years, Todd
two point four years, Seaton four years, three point one three.
Speaker 2 (41:10):
On the move or looking to be on the move.
Speaker 5 (41:13):
Is that because they're leaving or getting fined?
Speaker 2 (41:15):
Well, could be both. Ryan Fitzpatrick will join us coming up.
You know he went to Harvard. Jesse Palmer will join
us as well. Hour two on the way
