With Dan Snyder’s ownership, it’s unlikely Terry McLaurin would have been signed, but the new-look Washington Commanders managed to navigate it all. Recently cut quarterback and airport beer enjoyer Ben DiNucci talks about what it’s like to get released seven times from NFL rosters and reveals the final thing he got to take home from the Atlanta Falcons.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's cutdown Day. This is it.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
And then it gets a little bit quiet in the
NFL as we get ready for the following Thursday night
with the Eagles and the Cowboys. I guess the only
other news potential news will be Michael Parsons if the
Cowboys can get him signed in time for him to
get ready for the Eagles. But we do know Trey
Hendrickson will be there for the Bengals as they doubled

(00:27):
his pay, and then he's a free agent after this.
And Terry McLaurin got in. I thought it was three years,
one hundred million dollars would get this taken care of.
I was off by four million dollars. But when you
think about the Commanders a case study and dysfunction under
Daniel Snyder, because if Daniel Snyder was still there as
the owner, I don't think this gets done. Josh Harris

(00:50):
coming in, Adam Peters is the GM and instead of
letting tensions foster fester, I should say they were able
to get this done both sides. It feels like got
the deal that they wanted. Feels like it was a
win win for everybody, certainly for Jadeen Daniels. But when
you see the formula with the quarterback and his receiver,

(01:12):
Jalen Hurts, aj Brown to Tyreek Hill, Josh Allen, Steffan Diggs,
Joe Burrow, Jamoar, Chase Baker, Mayfield, Mike Evans, and now
Washington is ensuring its own future under center has the
same chance as these other quarterbacks because right now the
Commanders aren't who they once were, but they are a

(01:32):
whole lot better and just getting him in there to
give him time to get ready, and I think that's
a big relief for Jaden Daniels because when all else fails,
you got to have that safety valve. Go down through
history with a lot of these great quarterbacks and they
always had that guy. It felt like Brady got in trouble,

(01:55):
Edelman was there, or Gronk was there. Joe Montana had
Jerry right Nice, Steve Young had terall Owens, Troy had
Michael Irt, Like you need to have that guy. All
else fails, I'm going to you, and the Commanders certainly
have that guy. Stat of the Day brought to you

(02:15):
by Panini America, the official trading cards of the Dan
Patrick Show. From the crew that brought you the Office
comes a new comedy of underdogs with major issues, The
Dan Patrick Show. No It's the Paper. September fourth, only

the app if you haven't done so. Eight seven seven

(02:36):
to three DP show Operator Tyler, he's sitting by. You'll
take your phone calls. Coming up in a little bit.
What's it like to get cut seven times in the NFL?
Ben Denucci, former NFL quarterback, just got cut Saturday, and
he posted a picture having a beer. I think it
was real early in the morning, might have been eight am,

(02:58):
where he's having a beer at the airport as he
got cut again. He'll join us coming up. But the
big news is with Trey Hendrickson that he got a
pay bump but no deal. Also, Kenny Pickett goes to
the Raiders. That makes it interesting with the quarterback room,
and I think by all accounts of Dylan Gabriel as
your backup quarterback with the Cleveland Browns. The Raiders also

(03:19):
added to Mariy Cooper. Mary Cooper's had a career. He
got paid in Dallas, didn't get one hundred million dollars
there was in he with Cleveland. Is there another stop
there with the Mary Cooper that I'm not aware of.
But he's had a pretty good career. It didn't feel
like he was ever the number one receiver, but he

(03:41):
was just one of those guys that he was going
to get catches.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yes, Pauli.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
He started with Oakland for four years, three and a
half years in Dallas, a couple of years in Cleveland,
stop in Buffalo. He's got seven hundred and eleven career
catches in ten seasons.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Okay, we mentioned a little bit first hour with Rawleigh.
Here's another thing that is probably not going to be
brought up, but it should be emphasized. If you look,
he has thrown out twenty runners, so caught stealing ratio
is seventy five percent. He's a Gold Glover, a Platinum

(04:19):
Glove winner. In twenty twenty four, he led all catchers
in games caught, innings caught.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
That was last year.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Factor that in with the season that he's having this year,
and you got fifty home runs for a team that's
in the playoffs, and you got a nickname there that
now everybody recognizes. It's not just about and it used
to be that we did focus on what kind of
all around player were you. I remember when Frank Thomas

(04:47):
won the MVPG and there were baseball critics who said
anybody could play first base as well as Frank Thomas.
So sometimes it's that will help you. I don't think
anybody ever said, how if Albert Poohol's good field Like
there's certain players where you go doesn't come up, but

(05:08):
then other times it'll come up because it may strengthen
your argument with somebody that he's also a great great fielder. Uh.
You know, Joe Morgan won a couple MVPs, but he
was a really good fielding second baseman. Johnny Bench won
an MVP. He was a great fielding catcher. You know,
Bonds used to be a really good outfielder and then

(05:32):
he put on weight and you know, wasn't anywhere near
you know where he was as a Pittsburgh Pirate. And
did anybody talk about Mark McGuire as a fielder. They
may talk about Sammy Sosa, like you know, there's certain
players where you just don't bring it up.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
Yes, Marvin, Yeah, I was gonna say that was somebody
like David Ortiz or Yeah, Edgar Martinez. Oh, should it
be Hall of famers because they were only designated hitters. Yeah,
don't bring that up anymore.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
No, I don't think fielding matters as much, or it
doesn't feel like that's part of the resume if you're
going to say, here is candidate A and candidate B,
and you put in, you know, any defensive awards you
may have.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
Yeah, Pauline, I'm wondering if there's still a place in
baseball for guys who field first and hit second back
in the day, like Ozzie Smith was, you know, made
it to the Hall of Fame mostly because of his fielding.
Your guy, Davy Concepcion was a nice hitter, but he
was a wicked fielder and he stayed on the field
for decades.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
And you know, Conceptsium should be in the Hall of Fame,
but he was overshadowed by the big Red machine. Ozzy
was very flashy, you know, run out to his position
to a backflip and and you know he played for
good teams. But Davy Conceptsion, who invented the one hop
off the aster turf from deep short and I thought
he was a wonderful player.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, Paulin he should.

Speaker 4 (06:56):
Crank this one up again. You got to get Steve
Garvey maybe a two for Tuesdays and Davy concept. You on,
because you can't make nine straight All Star Games and
not be in the Hall of Fame. It should be
almost a rule Davy concept showing nine straight.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Steve Garvey should be in the Hall of Fame as well.

Speaker 6 (07:12):
What's up?

Speaker 3 (07:13):
But I can't get everybody in like I got.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
I got worked, you got three years. You got to
take care of these things.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
I know Cincinnati people would love this. I even forgot
about helping Tony Baselli get in the Hall of Fame.
I led that crusade and uh, thankfully Pro Football Hall
of Fame listened or somebody did.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Yeah, Marvin, one more.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
Guy that you get into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Fielder first guy, ol Marvis Gal.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah, I think he's got some baggage. But you're right.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
I thought he was the best fielding shortstop that I
ever saw. His hands were unbelievable, unbelievable. But I think
there's baggage there. Don't want to go into detail, but
I think there's some baggage. Kip in Nashville, Good morning, Kip,
what's on? Your mind today.

Speaker 7 (08:02):
Hey, good morning DP, good morning Cream.

Speaker 8 (08:05):
Had a question and.

Speaker 7 (08:06):
It's something it's a big glaring a mission. First, let
me stay I love football, but I don't particularly care
for the NFL and the way the NFL does business.
Having said that, regarding as Michael Parsons Jerry Jones situation,
where is the NFL PA in this? Does Michael Parsons
have to file a grievance? Does he have to bring

(08:28):
them in? At what point does the NFL get off
it's spineless behind and actually do the job that the
players are paying them to actually do well.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
I brought this up the last couple of weeks, Kip
and no traction. Jerry Jones isn't allowed to negotiate with
the player. That's why you have an agent. Jerry's been
doing this and nobody is reprimanding Jerry Jones. Yes, why
isn't somebody I have no idea going after him? I
know I do because it is in the union doing something.

(09:00):
I think Darrell Reeves and he's somebody had recommended him
for NFL, like the NFL Player Association president. But he
brought that up yesterday or the day before that. Why
aren't we doing this Why is Jerry Jones able to
negotiate a contract with Michael Parsons and then use that
and say, hey, we agreed to something. Well, it's just

(09:21):
you and him, whereas if you have an agent in there,
it just changes the story. But I don't know why
somebody hasn't said something to Jerry.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
But yeah, Paulie, I have an idea the NFL should
say to Jerry Jones, if you do this again, your
punishment will be you cannot do any media appearances for
an entire year. They all good as attention.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Ferminator in Florida.

Speaker 9 (09:48):
I Ferminator, Yes, sir, hello Dan, your team there, a
long time listener, first time caller five eleven one, and
and that earlier in the show you were onto something,
but you missed it by about one thousand miles.

Speaker 6 (10:06):
I think.

Speaker 9 (10:06):
I don't know if you're aware. In Baltimore there this morning,
they're setting up for a major press conference at the
stadium to announce Derrick Henry's retirement. He said that the
great Dan Patrick had introduced him to the movies, and
he's going to go to the movies full time.

Speaker 10 (10:25):
Now.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
Well, thank you, Ferminator. We'll get some of our best
people on that Dereck Henry is gonna pull a Jim
Brown and now I'll do movies. Thank you, erminator. That's nice.
We'll call back there. Let me see Wayne in Montana.
Hi Wayne, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 11 (10:44):
Hi Dan? Thanks taking my call a longtime, second time
six two two thirty and working on it. But a
little over a year ago, we were planning on a
trip to Rome, and a couple months before that, we
were listening to your episode and heard the episode about

(11:05):
a sunt To Madre. So I took the episode home,
played it for my wife, and we got online, made
a reservation and just had a great time. So now
we are scheduling a trip to Long Island and Best
Page and the Ryder Cup, and just wondering if you

(11:28):
or the Danetes or Dan Nation has any recommendations on
the area or I.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Am I am Long Island ignorant. I can't help you there.
Maybe Dan Nation can. A sunt To Madre was a guy.
Fieri is the one who told me about this restaurant,
and it was great. No one spoke any English. All
I know is I walk in and you know the
fish they've just caught. I mean the fish are like

(11:56):
still flapping and they got them on ice, and I
just remember, you know. We sat down and waiter came
over and he said, you know, didn't speak English, and
I said okay, and he goes, come here and I
go up where all the there's like seven or eight
different styles of fish, and I go, what about this?

Speaker 1 (12:16):
You like this?

Speaker 2 (12:17):
We didn't like that?

Speaker 3 (12:18):
Okay, we take that, and I'm going, no, no, I
hold on, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
I don't know what about that?

Speaker 12 (12:24):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (12:24):
You liking that? We'd make it that? And we got
and I go so I went and sat down. My
wife goes, did you order? I said, I don't know
what I ordered. I have no idea. Next thing, I know,
two big plates come out with the fish with the
head on everything, and it was wonderful something Madre is

(12:45):
the name of it, and uh, how's my accent there?
Spot on? Thank you, thank you? But it's in Rome
and Guy Fieri is the one who told me about that. Yes, Todd,
you prefer the head of the fish on or off? Off? Yeah? Off? Yeah,

(13:06):
I don't need to look at you. I'm sorry, we
don't need to look at the The eyeball is.

Speaker 6 (13:13):
There at it long enough.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
It looks like his moves a little bit for a freak.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Yeah, PAULI, I found it soon, Sir Madre.

Speaker 6 (13:20):
Yeah it looks good.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Yeah yeah, but it's the real deal. I don't think
anybody spoke English in there, which is fine. You know,
I'm not the ugly American of saying, you know, why
don't you know English. It added to the charm there
that we had no idea what we're ordering, and that
I'd point to something and then my wife said, will
you stop doing that because he takes the order every time.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
I'd go, what about that? You like that we get that?
And I go, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
We just ordered a partief and after drink dinner, I
don't know what was in it, but I'm like, all right, sure, yes, marm.

Speaker 5 (13:55):
Did you do that impersonation the entire trip?

Speaker 2 (13:59):
No?

Speaker 3 (14:00):
No, my wife gets mad at me when I'm having
fun because, oh so it's not just me.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
But I was just having fun.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
Well, I would call everybody Jimmy skin Jeal and Tommy Calamary,
and then she would go, we stop, I go, come on,
come on, And then by the end of it she
started saying it. She go, I know Jimmy skin Geeal
and Tommy Calamary because you know I would just point
out and I say, go over there to Jimmy Skinjeal

(14:33):
and see if we can get a beer here. Yes, Todd,
if you guys.

Speaker 13 (14:37):
Overorder at a fancy restaurant on vacation, you got leftovers,
it's just a portions are too big.

Speaker 6 (14:41):
What do you do in that situation?

Speaker 13 (14:42):
I've been trying to jam it into the little fridge
where they have the little bottles of liquor.

Speaker 6 (14:46):
If you wanted to keep it for the next few days,
what do you do?

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Oh, I'm not bringing the food back.

Speaker 13 (14:50):
If you just dropped all kinds of castion, it was
delicious and you wanted to have more beyond that.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
One, Well, why don't you overorder?

Speaker 6 (14:57):
Well, like you said, you pointed to stuff. Oh, we'll
get to that and the next thing, you know that
fifteen plates away.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
No, I'm not.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
If I'm on vacation, I'm not going to try to
cram it in when those.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Low refrigerator it's difficult to do that.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Yeah, I'll put it outside on the Verandah, I'm not
gonna do that.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Oh, what's the pole question? For a seat? And what's
the pole question today?

Speaker 14 (15:17):
Speaking of this is our version of Jimmy Schel and
Tommy Calamari.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
People are hating this pole question. Actually, by the way,
we went to the Vatican and they have the guards
have those really bright, vibrant.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Ye outfits orange and red. Yes.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
And I would say, man, it's tough to go to
work if you're Jimmy skin Jeal and Tommy Calamari.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
And she said, will you stop?

Speaker 3 (15:44):
I said, I said, you're Italian and she goes, yeah,
you're not. And I said, okay, all right, I said,
you want to make fun of people in Ireland, go ahead,
hont everybody else does?

Speaker 2 (15:56):
She goes, I know, but I don't do that. I go,
all right, all right.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
I'm just saying if I was going to work every
day and I had to wear those outfits, it might
be a little challenging.

Speaker 8 (16:06):
I get.

Speaker 14 (16:07):
I get reminded often at home about how Italian people
don't think their food is funny at all. There's nothing
funny about this. So you could say moots all all
you want, and it's not funny.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
It's not. This isn't something that we laugh about. I
have an Italian feast. It's the one hundredth year of
this Italian feast coming up this weekend. Awesome sounds awesome,
that sounds great.

Speaker 6 (16:35):
Fresh moots.

Speaker 3 (16:36):
Yeah, food's great, foods great. It just it takes forever
to start the grill. And it's a long day. It's
a long day. Yes, marm Does your wife say, can
I get fresh moots?

Speaker 2 (16:53):
She doesn't know.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
She will sometimes if we're in Italy, then all of
a sudden, the accent comes out and we're like, okay, all.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Right, here we go, we go.

Speaker 3 (17:06):
We were we were in Italy at a restaurant and
my wife was all in on Italy, you know, and
she's Italian and she was like and she was trying
to speak to this guy, like what what part of
Italy are you from? And he goes, I am from Cuba.

(17:26):
Let me take a break here. We're gonna talk to
the nuts. Bend to Nucci right on, let's see right
on cue if he knows Tommy Calamari, Jimmy appreciate this segment.
Actually it probably didn't. When word gets to my wife
and she'll be like, oh stop, We'll take a break

(17:46):
back after this.

Speaker 1 (17:48):

Speaker 3 (18:54):
Ben Denucci, NFL quarterback, recently cut by the Falcons, the
seventh time he's been released in his pro career. He
played at Pittsburgh. He played James Madison and was initially
I think selected by the Cowboys and the twenty twenty
NFL Draft got to start a game for the Cowboys.
I think that same year during Covid and Ben joining us,

(19:16):
I wanted to buy you a beer. I felt bad
when you posted you were at the airport. What time
was that you were having a beer on Saturday?

Speaker 12 (19:25):
About three pm? So I thought I thought it was
I thought it was good enough time to crack one open,
so figured it was fine.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
Do you ever get used to getting cut?

Speaker 17 (19:37):
Honestly? Yeah?

Speaker 12 (19:38):
I mean I was very fortunate the first couple of
years of my career to be to be in Dallas,
and then the last couple of years. Yeah, the last
twelve or twelve or eighteen months, I've been on three
or four teams, and it seems like every every couple
of months, you're uh, you're packing up, finding finding a
new place to play, and you know, going about your business.
So yeah, i'd say at this point, I'm I'm used
to it. I'm kind of numb to it. Not necessarily

(20:00):
it's a bad thing. It's you just kind of get
used to it.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
How tense is cut down day?

Speaker 17 (20:08):
For me?

Speaker 12 (20:08):
The last I mean the last couple of years, it
hasn't been very tense. I didn't see myself having any
chance to make the roster, to make the practice squad.
But it's it's tough, right, I mean you people don't
realize for the guys that are trying to make this roster,
the any roster.

Speaker 17 (20:23):
The preseason is your is your super Bowl?

Speaker 11 (20:25):
Right?

Speaker 17 (20:25):
Your playoffs?

Speaker 12 (20:25):
You get two or three games, Uh, you get maybe
a couple quarters a game to go put on tape
what you're what you're gonna do, not only for the
team you're on, but the thirty one other teams.

Speaker 17 (20:33):
So it's it's very stressed.

Speaker 12 (20:35):
I've got a few buddies who are still sitting around
waiting this morning to see if see if their phone
rings are not and uh they'll go from there. But yeah,
it's stressful. It's guys live livelihoods. It's their way of
making money, and it's uh, you know what they do.
So it's it's very stressful.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
How were you told.

Speaker 17 (20:52):
My phone rang.

Speaker 12 (20:53):
From a New York number that I didn't have in
my phone and that's normally, uh, you know, that's normally
a number you don't ever want to see pop up
on your phone. And I answered, Hey, Ben, you know,
coach wants to see you. Bring your iPad, bring your charger,
bring your playbook. And that's kind of kind of how
it rolls. When you get into the facility, there's somebody
waiting for you. They take you around, drop your iPad off,
go see your coaches, go see you know whoever else
you need to see, and then you know, they buy

(21:15):
you a.

Speaker 17 (21:15):
Flight and then you're out. Next thing you know, you're
drinking an airport beer.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
So okay, what do you do now? Like, at what
point do you say?

Speaker 3 (21:22):
Now, I know you're you're going to do a football
game coming up air Force and Bucknill and CBA Sports Network,
But are you done trying out for NFL teams?

Speaker 17 (21:33):
So no, I don't think.

Speaker 12 (21:34):
I'm officially done yet, right, I mean, the NFL is
an interesting kind of animal. You get a phone call
at any second, could be today, tomorrow, could be in
six months, could could never be again. So yeah, the
tough part guy for guys is staying in it right,
waking up every morning, still doing what you've been doing
the last couple of years, to make sure that you
know if the phone rings, you know you're you're doing
what you're supposed to do and ready to roll that

(21:55):
if a team needs you.

Speaker 17 (21:56):
But at the same time, I've.

Speaker 12 (21:57):
Been in the situation a couple of times the last
couple of years and don't necessarily.

Speaker 17 (22:01):
Want to be waiting around again.

Speaker 12 (22:02):
I'll fall just stressing myself out watching NFL games on Sunday.
So I'm excited to UH to move on a little
bit progress the next chapter of my career outside of
football and looking forward to to calling Bucknelliver's Air Force
to Saturday.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
Okay, but if you get a call on Friday night
by an NFL team, what happens to Saturday afternoon bucknell
in Air Force?

Speaker 12 (22:22):
I'll tell him, Hey, I can't I can't be anywhere
until Sunday, and hopefully their response.

Speaker 3 (22:27):
Is is what I expected to be?

Speaker 6 (22:31):
UH?

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Seventh rownd draft pick by the Cowboys.

Speaker 17 (22:34):
Correct?

Speaker 3 (22:34):
What was that like when Jerry Jones called you to
tell you. He was drafting you.

Speaker 17 (22:40):
Very cool.

Speaker 12 (22:40):
I think I might be one of the only people
in Cowboys history to say that I got drafted from
UH from Jerry Jones's yacht. It was that COVID year,
so they weren't they weren't in their draft room in Dallas.
I think Jerry was calling everybody from UH from from
his yacht in the middle of the ocean somewhere, and
UH saw the phone ring. It was his assistant. He said, hey,
you know, Ben, you know, mister mister Jones wants to
talk to you. We've got the next pick. We're drafting you.

(23:01):
And you know, at that point it was kind of like,
all right, this is this is really cool. Everything that
we work for growing up, high school, college, it's kind
of all come, all come first, full circle and worth
it in this kind of the moment that we've been
waiting for.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
Ben Denutci NFL quarter I'm still going to introduce you's
NFL quarterback.

Speaker 17 (23:17):
That's that's fair. I'll take it.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
Yeah, okay, released for the seventh time in his pro career,
and it'll be in the broadcasting booth. It'll be Bucknell
in Air Force. That'll be a three thirty Eastern this
weekend for CBS Sports Network. Being on the practice squad
as opposed to the active squad, what's the difference in
how you're treated your pay lifestyle.

Speaker 12 (23:43):
Yeah, honestly, nothing's different except the except your weekly checks
that you're getting in every week. You know, everybody treats
you the same way, right, I mean, there's fifty three
guys on the active roster and there's sixteen on the
practice squad. And the reality of the NFL is that
gods are going to get hurt over the course of
the year, right, whether it's you know, whatever position it is.
And so though guys that are on the practice squad,
they're they're a vital part of the team. They're the
guys that are getting the starters ready to go to go,

(24:05):
you know, play out there on Sundays.

Speaker 17 (24:08):
They have a vital, vital role in making these teams go.

Speaker 12 (24:11):
And so there's a reason that these teams put a
lot of effort into into the practice squad, just.

Speaker 17 (24:16):
Just like they do the active rosters. So yeah, it's
really all the same.

Speaker 12 (24:19):
You're still traveling with the team, you're still still practicing,
still part of meetings. The pay cuts a little bit
a little bit less, but at the end of the day,
it's it's it's still great.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
So but can you can you leave it now?

Speaker 3 (24:32):
Like if I say, what is your moment, You're going
to tell your kids are grandkids where you that's my
NFL moment?

Speaker 2 (24:38):
What is it?

Speaker 8 (24:40):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (24:40):
I mean it'd be it'd be hard not to say,
you know, my rookie year, when I got to start
that game on Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys. I
think that's a moment that everybody kind of grows up thinking, Hey,
I'd love to I'd love to play in the NFL.
Let alone, let it be for the Dallas Cowboys, right,
I mean, the Stars just kind of this iconic brand,
not only you know in the US, but you know
overseas as well. So, yeah, it's crazy that it just

(25:01):
happened my first year. Some guys, it happens year ten,
something happens year five. Mind just happened to be.

Speaker 17 (25:06):
To be a rookie year. And so to be able
to do that and say I.

Speaker 12 (25:08):
Started a game for the Dallas Cowboys, it's something that
a lot of people can't say and stick their name to.
So that was kind of my Hey, welcome to the
NFL moment, and I think when it's all said and done,
that'll be what I look back on and saying, man,
was that was pretty cool.

Speaker 17 (25:20):
I'm glad, glad that happened.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
Hell nervous, were you?

Speaker 17 (25:25):
Well?

Speaker 12 (25:26):
Honestly, I think I would have been a lot more
nervous had there been seventy five thousand people in the
stands like a year opposed to only five or six
thousand for COVID.

Speaker 17 (25:33):
So honestly, wasn't that nervous, right? I think you're more
nervous just kind of the.

Speaker 12 (25:38):
Week leading up, the practice, the game plan, making sure
you know that checks, everything is kind of you're good mentally,
and then when you get out there on the day
of the game. Shoot, it's the same game I've been
playing for the last fifteen years. So when you step
inside the white lines, it's it's go time. You got
to shut everything else out and go play ball.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
You get to keep your jerseys from all these stumps,
you do.

Speaker 17 (26:00):
Oh yeah, you can see my Cowboys one up here.
I grabbed, uh.

Speaker 12 (26:02):
I grabbed my Falcons one last weekend, and I think
I've got the only the only one I don't have
is the bills from last year during camp, So trying
to try to find a way to to get that one.

Speaker 17 (26:10):
That's the last one I need.

Speaker 2 (26:11):
Do you have to ask or do you steal?

Speaker 12 (26:15):
Well, you steal, but they still uh, they still deduct
it from your paycheck. You've got to kind a sign
off on everything. The day after the games when they're
checking all the jerseys back in there, like all of
a sudden, Hey, denucciese jersey's not here. Let's make sure
he uh, he pays for this thing on his way out.
So that might have been my last parting and gift
from the Falcons.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
How much was it?

Speaker 12 (26:33):
Uh, four hundred bucks? Yeah, so I mean I guess
it depends who you ask.

Speaker 17 (26:40):
That's a lot of money or not.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
So is it game used?

Speaker 17 (26:43):
Worth it? It was worth it?

Speaker 2 (26:45):
Yeah, it's game used.

Speaker 17 (26:46):
That's when I worked the game. Took it right off.
I took it right off my pads after the game
and through my threw my bags.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
Good luck with the broadcasting career and maybe the phone rings.
But you got the opportunity, though, Ben, that's the key,
and a lot of us never had it and you
got it, and maybe you get that opportunity again. But
it seemed like you're in good spirits. I don't know
if you're masking something. Did you cry?

Speaker 17 (27:10):
I've cried a couple of times.

Speaker 12 (27:11):
I'm at this point in my career where it's just
I'm filled with a lot of gratitude at this point. Right,
to be able to be cut that many times, you've
got to, you know, team's got to like you enough.

Speaker 17 (27:18):
To sign you in the first place. Right, So it's
been an unbelievable career.

Speaker 12 (27:21):
Got five good years, played on a bunch of different teams,
played for some you know head coaches that I grew
up idolizing, you know, coach McCarthy, coach Peyton, coach McDermott,
and Buffalo. Played with a lot of guys, right Dak, Josh, Allen, Russell, Wilson,
Guys that you know, I've had on my fantasy team
for years growing up, and then all of a sudden
you're sitting next to him in the in the meeting room, saying,
how the hell the heck did I get here? So
it's been really cool for me. Yeah, there's no reason

(27:43):
to hang my hat. I'm excited about the next chapter.
And it's been it's been a heck.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Of a rude.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
It might be awkward, and it might be awkward me
even saying this, but did you ever try to swap
jerseys with dak or Russell Wilson or Josh Allen?

Speaker 17 (28:00):
Honestly know that thought never even even crossed my mind.

Speaker 12 (28:02):
But looking back now, I sure would like to have
a couple of a couple of those jerseys to throw
up next to mine in my in my band cave,
just to say, hey, my kids one day, Yeah, your
dad was decent.

Speaker 17 (28:11):
He actually did play with these guys.

Speaker 12 (28:13):
He doesn't just have much of random random jerseys of
himself hanging up on the wall.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
Thanks for joining us.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
We appreciate being a good sport here and good luck
against with Bucknell in Air Force this weekend.

Speaker 17 (28:24):
Thank you, Dan, appreciate it all the best.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
That's Ben Denucci just released by the Falcons. You know,
Paulie said, I think people would appreciate hearing from somebody
where you know, you get cut and then you get
cut again, and so seven times in your career you
get cut. And I think when I saw the social
media post when Ben's at the airport and now you

(28:46):
got to go home and you're having a beer and
you're all by yourself, and that's that's the other part
of this. We see you're making fifty million dollars a year,
but then there's the guy who played it two different place.
You get drafted by the Cowboys, you start a game
for the Cowboys, then all of a sudden, you start
to bounce around and bounce around, and then at some

(29:07):
point you have to say, all right, now I have
to move on. And that's a difficult So you're kind
of announcing your retirement when you do that. Even though
he's healthy, he's going to have to announce it, not
the team. You're announcing that you're moving on with your life.
But I still think it's but that phone may ring,

(29:30):
it may ring. A couple of phone calls in here.
Let's see John in Minnesota. Hi John, what's on your
mind today?

Speaker 8 (29:39):
Hey Dan, Thanks so much for taking my call and
apropos following then. But the question to you is I
really admire and respect you of a long time listener.
I love you and the guys. I just wonder when
you've gone through some tough times and dark period which
you've openly communicated about, who are some of the sports

(30:00):
heroes and sports lessons that have helped you get through
tough times. You're almost like a brother father the way
you communicate to me.

Speaker 3 (30:11):
Curious, Well, thank you, John. I I confided in my wife.
I mean it was my wife, obviously, my family even
you know, my brothers, my sisters. But like, you don't
know what that feels like until you're in that moment

(30:33):
when you know it's you're depressed and not even sure
if I was going to continue. I physically didn't think
I could do this anymore. And then you just get
so bummed and so down. And I was in a
dark place for a few months. But you still have to,
you know, brighten somebody's day when you do that. That's

(30:55):
the hardest part is I come in here and I
act like myself. But those those couple of months, I
had to act like I was supposed to act or
be and that was hard because I didn't feel good
and I didn't want to be here, but I did
need to be here. And I was so lucky I
had the dan ets because it got me away from

(31:15):
how I felt. But and I've said this, there is
no shame, no shame in talking to somebody if it's
a therapist or and no shame. Please do because all
you want somebody to do is just listen and kind
of set, you know, my compass. I had no idea

(31:36):
where I was going. I had no idea my wife was.
It was like a moving target. But yeah, it really
my family because those are the important people in my
life and I needed them to understand what I was
going through. I didn't confide confide in a therapist or
anything like that, not that I wouldn't have, but I
needed to communicate with my family. But thank you John

(31:58):
for the phone call. Let's take a break. When we
come back, fill in the blank. Fill in the blank
and more of your calls after this.

else cares about this.

Speaker 18 (32:32):
Sejan has a lifelong Newcasley United fans the last three years.
I want to know your opinion on the Alexander Ussek
contract and his hostive situation as I have called it.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
Couldn't you have just called Seaton privately and had this conversation.

Speaker 18 (32:51):
Now, this is national this is national radio.

Speaker 2 (32:55):
I know, I know that's what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
Man.

Speaker 14 (32:57):

that situation.

Speaker 3 (33:00):

The reputation of the Bengals organization is blank. Todd blank, stingy,
Satan choppy, Martin changing, Oh well deserved. Arch Manning will

(33:49):
blank the Heisman trophy. Todd arch Manning will watch the
Heisman trophy presentation Seatan.

Speaker 14 (33:57):
Yes, it's actually that is the way you read it
is right? Yeah, Well, blank the Heisman trophy. That's not happening, Yes, Marvin.

Speaker 6 (34:05):
He'll look at the Heisman trophy.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
Cruise to the Heisman Trophy cruise. I think it's one
of those Paul Newman winning for color money things. It's
gonna be hard for him to lose it. It's payback
for the family getting whatever you want to say, jobbed
over the years. Archie Manning finished fourth, Eli finished third,
Peyton finished second.

Speaker 6 (34:31):
There it is.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
I would start my defense with a Pro Bowl blank
Todd across that.

Speaker 13 (34:38):
Edge director and I put linebacker Pro Bowl linebacker.

Speaker 19 (34:42):
Seatan of interior linemen all right, Marvin edge rusher, Paul
Free safety, Russell Wilson's time with the Giants will be blank.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
Todd, Rocky.

Speaker 3 (34:57):
Seaton forgettable, Mars IRUs.

Speaker 5 (35:02):
Russ the ah O, I love it, oh brisk.

Speaker 3 (35:09):
The forty nine ers will be blank this season, Todd,
But forty.

Speaker 6 (35:14):
Nine will be improving this season.

Speaker 2 (35:16):
Seatan not good.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
Marvin better than last year.

Speaker 2 (35:21):
Well they won six games last year.

Speaker 6 (35:23):
Yeah, so seven games.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Okay, Paul underwhelming.

Speaker 3 (35:27):
The guy who tells NFL players that they are cut
is blank.

Speaker 2 (35:31):
God, that would be the bad guy, Seatan.

Speaker 3 (35:34):
That person is a bleep. Marvin better than me, Paul emotionless. Well,
it is their job. It's not like they go hey
when it comes down to cutting guys. I want to
be your guy. I want to make them cry. Yeah,
there might be people like that. There might be some
guys who are like you know, I love to do
the fire and if I can cal rawly will finish

(35:57):
the season with blank home runs.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
Todd in the fifty seven Satan Many Marvin fifty eight
fifty seven. Right, that's it, Yeah, Neil, Yeah, it doesn't.
We did it. We did it.

Speaker 3 (36:17):
Kenny in Denver, Hi, Kenny, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 10 (36:20):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (36:20):
Dan?

Speaker 20 (36:20):
The third time I've called, first time that I was
ever able to actually talk to you like you know,
you get calls things from up. I am now part
of a huge constituency of yours, the Triple I Club,
the infirmed, incarcerated or otherwise incapacitated. I had opened our
surgery two weeks ago, but that's not why I called.
There was like three months ago Todd. There was a
three D three where Todd and being particularly Toddish, and

(36:43):
I thought, you know who you've got to get on
It would be a great guest. The appointment viewing would
be missus Todd Fritz. If we could have her on
the questions you could ask her would be amazing. The answers,
you would give it probably, You mean you probably have
to put Todd in the ConA silence when she's on though.

Speaker 3 (36:59):
Well, I was thinking one day that we just put
the spouses, the wives of the dan Nets in their chairs.
And the dan Nets aren't in that day, and I
just have your wives in What do you think I
think that'd be great, Marvin, Yeah, okay, Paul.

Speaker 4 (37:20):
I think it's great content seat.

Speaker 2 (37:22):
All right, maybe we do that, Maybe we get the
wives in here.

Speaker 14 (37:26):
Oh yeah, it was so tough today hitting golf balls
all day, Honey, definitely get a lot of.

Speaker 3 (37:31):
Oh would you have to you didn't hit the golf
ball the right way? That I was a bad day.
If I come home, I'm twenty years of that.

Speaker 2 (37:40):
All over the kitchen table. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
My wife, cause I just say, she'd be like, well,
what do you talk about?

Speaker 2 (37:46):
We walked to dinner.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
I go, man, I'm tired from what I said, I
work today. She goes like, nothing physical. I said, it's mental. Hunh.
I don't have a lot to work with here, so
I gotta work even harder mentally. And speaking of making
me mental, Todd, what I get things.

Speaker 13 (38:05):
Like us you talk sports and goofed around with each
other and then had some sliders.

Speaker 6 (38:09):
I don't know how you got through the day.

Speaker 3 (38:11):
Thank you. Tod Albert in Hollywood. Hi Albert, what's on
your mind?

Speaker 6 (38:17):
Hi?

Speaker 10 (38:18):
Hey, thanks for taking my call. I'll just speak for
the guys here on this last topic. You don't want
your wives intermixing there at the workplace. But I called
because Fritzy, you caught my attention with what to do
with the to go platter when you're on vacase And
I spent a lot of time on the road. And
if it's an eco friendly to go box, you have

(38:41):
to add a stuff. But if it's one of those
plastic ones, what I do is I take it back
to the hotel room. I get the bucket of ice
from down the hall, fill the synk with it, and
then I put that to go platter right on top.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
All right, Well, thank you. I well, you could have
thought of that.

Speaker 6 (38:56):
No, but that's actually I didn't think of that.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
But I wouldn't do that, yes, Marvin, Sorry.

Speaker 5 (39:01):
Completely unrelated going back to fill in the blank. Can
I make a bet with PAULI? Oh, I'll take oh
Archie made it will not win the Heisman Trophy.

Speaker 10 (39:12):
Arch.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
Excuse me, Paul, No, I wouldn't take that.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
Bet Wait a.

Speaker 2 (39:15):
Minute, you just said cruising to the Heisman trophy.

Speaker 4 (39:18):
Yes, I believe that, but I wouldn't take that. But
there's too many variables, so you.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
May not cruise to the Heisman trophy.

Speaker 4 (39:27):
All right, I'll take it.

Speaker 3 (39:29):
Okay, I like that shaming you white shaming obviously winning
the Heisman, but I'm never gonna Betty. What do you think?
I'm stupid? Nice fish in Pennsylvania, I fish, what's on
your mind?

Speaker 20 (39:45):
What's up?

Speaker 11 (39:45):
Boys?

Speaker 9 (39:46):
Love the show?

Speaker 20 (39:47):
Uh?

Speaker 21 (39:48):
Talking about trying to make it in the NFL. I've
often thought, if you're just the fourth putter to make
a putt in a meaningless scramble, the pressure you're under
is pretty amazing. Imagine a young guy that's trying to
make it, maybe married, maybe even have a kid or two,
what that pressure must be like because they don't get

(40:10):
paid if they don't place.

Speaker 3 (40:12):
Yeah, and I have great respect for Ben Denucci. You
joined us because I mean, we can have fun with
him being cut seven times, But I really wanted him
to tell me what that's like, that feeling and almost
like that dread. But you have to be good enough
to get cut that many times. As strange as that
may sound, but people keep giving you a chance. Jeff

(40:35):
and san Diego, Hi, Jeff, Good.

Speaker 22 (40:39):
Morning, Dan and Dana. I just wanted to reiterate bet
how good Aaron Donald was. I mean, he was the
Rookie of the Year, eight time Pro, All Pro, nine
time Pro bowler. But the thing I wanted to talk
about when he worked out with Jared Versus this past season.
Did you guys see that video?

Speaker 2 (40:56):
Yes? I did.

Speaker 11 (40:57):
Yeah, it's amazing.

Speaker 22 (40:59):
Two years Ednard Arment. He was this teaching this young
stud I.

Speaker 3 (41:03):
Know, and Versus a really good player. But thank you
for the phone call, Jeff. Aaron Donald is underrated. In
my opinion, He's Hall of Famer, but I think we
get caught up in the edge rusher. Two hours in
the books, One more to go, Todd Seaton, Marv Paula,
yours truly, and the back room guys as well. Final
