Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio Our two.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
On this Thursday, Dan and the Dan Nets Dan Patrick
Show talks in football, Ross Tucker. Our good buddy. We'll
stop buying a little bit former Cowboys, said coach Jason Garrett,
now working with NBC Sports Football Night in America. He
will join us as well. You can dial us up
each seven to seven three DP Show Tyler. We'll take
your phone calls. Email address Dpadanpatrick dot com Twitter handle

(00:28):
The DP Show. Just got this in that Justin Fields
has been injured at the Jets practice. He was carted off.
He threw a pass, started limping off and they took
him off on a cart and no more injury updates.
As far as details with that, we'll keep you posted.

(00:50):
But he was carted off. It was a non contact
injury to his right leg. But that's according to Adam Schefter.
Pull question for hour two is gonna be watch Seaton
and give us the results from hour one if you can. Yeah,
we put a couple up there for hour one.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
We have up there your policy on rookie quarterbacks, you
start them or sit them. Sixty three percent of the
audience sit them, will Nick Saban ever coach again. Most
people believe no, if he was to coach again, will
it be in the NFL or college football? That one's
more interesting. That's fifty to fifty people are split between

(01:31):
the NFL and college football.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
And if Nick Saban will ever coach again, Yeah, I
don't think he coaches in college again. But the NFL.
I could see that maybe he might have that urge
to do it, but maybe it's just passing, just a
passing urge there, or maybe laying the groundwork there for
the Cleveland Browns. And if that's the case. Colin Cowherd

(01:54):
had that, calling it one of the worst kept secrets
in the South. Now, this came out initially with Greg McElroy,
the former Alabama quarterback now an analyst. He started talking
about he had a good source who was telling him,
and it might have been Lane Kiffin, because Kiffen has

(02:14):
now come out and said he thinks that Nick Saban's
going to coach again, so maybe that's where his source is.
But both said that they thought that Saban would be
coaching or they heard that he might be coaching again,
and is it going to be in the NFL. But
the NFL is tricky and coaching for that owner, and

(02:36):
if it's tied to Arch Manning, because that's what Colin
was saying, that it's kind of a package deal. The
Browns do have two first round draft picks, but you
have to get the number one pick. How many number
one picks first round picks are you going to give
up to get Arch Manning? If you don't have the
number one pick. What's it going to cost you to
get Arch Manning? Four number one picks? I mean we've

(02:59):
seen what teams you know, will give up to move
up in the draft, you know, even to get Trey
Lance or Mitchell Trubisky. What are you gonna I mean,
it's gonna cost you a ton. Does Saban want to
give up all of that to get Arch Manning? Does
the Manning family want Arch to go and play for
that owner in Cleveland? Jimmy Haslin, I think there's just

(03:22):
too many I don't know about this or that has
to happen for this to happen. But until Saban says otherwise,
I guess we have to be open to the possibility. Yes, Mark,
but why are.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
We giving arch Manning the title of the number one
pick in the draft? He's played maybe two games at Texas.
Is it just because of pedigree alone?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yes, I would say that has a lot to do
with it. If you know his name was Jimmy Lipper,
then he's probably not going to be projected as that
guy's going to be guaranteed number one pick overall.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Yeah, Ston Marvin took the words right out of my mouth.
The kid hasn't even played yet. Really, now we're getting
him to the Browns to trade four draft picks to
get Nick saban in to do all of this, and
the Mannings because of Haslam and Tennessee and all this stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
The kid hasn't even played yet. I know, But that
why be a buzzkill. That's what we're trying to fill.
You know, they are filling July right now. That is true.
You're right, we are.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
We're just filling July because everything we're talking about makes
zero sense from a.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Football This is July programming on sports radio.

Speaker 5 (04:28):
Yes, Paul, it does seem destiny because of the Manning name.
I mean, Eli Manning. His college career was good. He
had a really nice college career. He was the number
one overall draft pick. It wasn't really even a question
he didn't raise Ole Miss to some heights, or have
monstrous stats or win back to back heistmans. He went
number one because of the safety of the Manning name
at the quarterback position. It's a risk free draft pick.

(04:48):
Bonus coverage here. The Browns have two first round draft
picks next year, their own and the Jaguars, so they
have two chances for.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
The number one pick. Okay, Well, I think Jacksonville is
going to be better. They better be better the Browns. Uh,
you know they'll be in the running for worst team
in the NFL. I'm gonna guess what's what's the over under?
Can we find out DraftKings over under with the Cleveland
Browns because it can't be more than five and a half?

(05:18):
Four and a half maybe for Cleveland win total. Yeah, Paul, The.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
Cleveland Browns have the worst win loss over under for
the upcoming season at four and a half wins.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
The other teams in the mix there are the Saints,
the Giants, the Jets, and the Titans with five and
a half wins.

Speaker 6 (05:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
If you're the Manning family, they live in New Orleans.
His grandfather lives in New Orleans. When you want him
to go to the Saints, the hometown team, so they're
gonna They're gonna have a say in this as well. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
At this point in their college careers, Eli Manning had
already played five more games than arch m.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Okay, yeah, Paul.

Speaker 5 (06:00):
By the way, if I'm arch Manning, I'm staying at
Texas as long as I can.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
I'll stay three more years. That's another thing that nobody's
factoring in. I don't see arch Manning coming out this year.
Money is not the issue. If the Cleveland Browns are
on the clock, does that make you want to go
to the NFL?

Speaker 7 (06:18):
Now?

Speaker 2 (06:18):
If New Orleans? If New Orleans has the number one pick,
then I could see arch Manning doing that. But I
it's not a given that. Hell, unless he wins the
Heisman and they win the national title, and even then
he might go. Man, this is pretty good. I'm having fun.
Texas has done great recruiting surrounded him. He's helped out

(06:41):
recruiting players. I could see him being there for two
more years. Yeah, Paul.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
He has the best quarterback gig in the state of Texas,
pro or college. That's a perfect gig. Everybody wants Texas.
Everyone in that state roots for Texas well, and.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yes, Marvin and.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
He might have a higher salary at Texas than he
will there's a rookie in the NFL, more fans at
the game.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Money, but money's not the issue.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
Money.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Money won't be the issue for him where he'll be like, yeah,
I gotta go. And he might like the college life.
He might realize that he needs to have more starts
before he goes to the NFL. But I don't think that.
You know, hey, the Browns are on the clock. Isn't
that enticing? I don't think so. Hey, Nick Saban could

(07:30):
be coaching the Browns, okay, I you know, trying to
understand what a twenty year old is, you know, factoring
in here. But he's going to get all this advice
from whether it's his grandfather or his uncle's or his dad.
Steve Sarkisian. You know, I see him stay in another year.

(07:51):
Speaking of quarterbacks, Joe Burrow, it feels like the last
couple of years, he gets in front of the media
this time of the year and has to talk about
the player who aren't in camp. And Joe Burrow did
that yesterday.

Speaker 6 (08:04):
Yeah, obviously disappointing.

Speaker 8 (08:06):
You know, you'd like to have have all your guys
out there, dang wan to try to build that cohesion
that I was talking about earlier.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
But that's it's not how it usually works out.

Speaker 9 (08:16):
You know, it's a business and that is uh how's gone.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Okay? He probably said this last year X year. Obviously
we'd like to have everybody in camp. It's a distraction, Yeah,
but it's a business, and uh nice to everybody here.

Speaker 5 (08:41):
Yeah, it's like Mad Lives. You plug in a player name,
I really hope that who is it this year? It's
T Higgins. I really hope t Higgins gets fair. No,
I really hope Hendrick Skins could whatever.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Here's Russell Wilson now with the Giants. But doesn't matter
what team he's on, he usually says the same things.

Speaker 8 (08:59):
I'm always just focused on being the best version of
me every day, you know. For me, you know, my
mentality is always to be the best.

Speaker 6 (09:04):
In the world.

Speaker 8 (09:05):
You know, I don't I don't know anything else other
than that. Just trying to having that mentality and helping
our football team win.

Speaker 6 (09:11):
You know, I think that's the big thing that.

Speaker 8 (09:13):
I'm really how you focused on is is elevating our practice,
elevating our play elevating our mentality and having a championship
mentality daily different uniform.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Sam Russ just he sounds like a life coach there,
just trying to, you know, give you a better version
of me every single day. That's what I'm doing. To
a tongue ioloa. He uh wow. He tip toed close
to the fire here his relationship with Tyreek Hill, and
I was kind of surprised, but maybe it talks about,

(09:44):
you know, to wanting to be the leader in Miami,
and you know, Tyreek Hill has had a lot of
these little hints or hey I'm out of here, or
you know some you know emojis where you're trying to
read between the lines with that. But uh Tua was
asked about his relationship with Tyreek Hill.

Speaker 9 (10:05):
When you say something like that, it's you don't just
come back from that with hey my bad. You know,
you got you got to work that that relationship up.
You got to build everything up again. And it's still
a work in progress, not just for me but for everybody.
But like I said, he's he's working on himself. He's
working on the things that he say. You know, he
says he wants to get better with and do better

(10:26):
on So that's the first step to me, and so
I commend him for doing that.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, and Tyreek seems to be it feels like more
motivated in trying to be you know, beat Noah Lyles,
you know, in the one hundred meter dash, like that
seems to be more important than football. And he did
say last year, I'm out, and I think that's what
two is talking about, like you got to kind of

(10:52):
earn your way back into this locker room. So I'm
I mean, I'm fine with him doing that, Like there's
accountability here. And if you want to be that leader
and you're asking Tyreek Hill to be all in, then
I it's one of those that did you have the
conversation with him privately? Like that would if I'm a
member of the media, I would say, how much of

(11:13):
you discussed this with Tyreek Hill? Because if he says, yeah,
I have talked to him about that, because I don't
like when somebody says something in a press conference that
they didn't say privately to somebody. But if you do
that and you have that conversation, then you don't blindside somebody.
You're like, yeah, we've had conversations. He's got to earn

(11:34):
our trust and he's working on himself.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
Yes, Marv, if you're an organization, do you like the
Russell Wilson approach where it's very cliche or do you
like the TUA? Well, you know, what I'm going to
say will come to the top of my head.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
I think if you're good with what you say with
the media and it's not misinterpreted or you may say
something that you regret or it's taken out of contact,
like those are all really tricky. I mean, you want
goodwill going in to try raging cap. You want everybody
you know it's it's great, we feel great. We got

(12:05):
a chance to be something special this year. Whatever you
know your motivation is or how you're going to proclaim that.
I mean, Russ doesn't really say anything. That's why when
he came on the show after the super Bowl and said,
you know, it's basically me or Pete Carroll, you know
one of us is going to be out in Seattle.
That's what shocked everybody because that was the real Russell Wilson.

(12:27):
He gave you something. You're like, whoa wait a minute,
what and we saw what happened after that. Russ doesn't
say anything and that's on purpose. But Tua, I'm going
to give him credit because it is an issue there,
and I have no problem with if he's saying that,
and he's had the conversation with Tyreek Hill.

Speaker 10 (12:48):
Yes, Tom, the media wants to the front office loves
Russ Wilson's saying a bunch of nothing is great for them.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
I don't say anything at all.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
Yeah, probably right, it's like to keep talking. Meanwhile, the
ownership of the Giants. It's like, hey, Russ, good job
today at the press conference. You said absolutely nothing. Congratulations.
All right, So we have a poll question for our
two seating on your birthday.

Speaker 6 (13:21):
You should have won?

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Oh my gosh, Now that doesn't help you know what.
See loves to wave his rings around right in front
of me. Whow okay, Marvin tell us about.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
How great it is cool?

Speaker 6 (13:36):
Should have won?

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, okay, I know we should have. You know that
he broke his heart, Marvin happy. What's poll question for
hour two? Why is Marvin so mean? Oh? There's four
options for you. Who is the meanest dan at currently?

Speaker 6 (14:01):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Currently? As in why the uh? Why I saying.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
Currently the mean It's because it's Marvin in this moment.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
Because mcgleven wasn't mean. No, he wasn't mean. He was calculated.
He was Yeah, he was calculated. He was good at
playing dumb. He was good at playing dumb. And he
wasn't mean.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
However, he could out of nowhere verbally punch you square
in the face and.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Be like, oh my god, what the hell just happened? Wow? Yeah,
where did that come?

Speaker 6 (14:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (14:31):
Mclevn wasn't chronically mean, but he could have moments, usually
when he was hungry, but he would say things You're like, whoa,
where'd that guy come from? And then the next week
could be nothing, nothing, nothing.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
I remember we had a meat Friday and he complained
that the meat didn't fall off the bone, and I went,
I need to punch you.

Speaker 6 (14:48):
In the face.

Speaker 5 (14:50):
I think, he said, Dan, if I remember right, there's
slabs and slabs of gorgeous ribs out there. And he
said something like not your best work.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
And I was like, oh, yeah, yeah, the meat's on
falling off the bone. How about some meat falls off
your bones here?

Speaker 10 (15:04):
And yes, Tod, didn't you also slap him on the
wrist because he was he wanted to eat early, or
he was eating early, and then he accused you. He
was like, why did you get a chance to eat
before me?

Speaker 7 (15:12):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (15:13):
He snuck out on a meat Friday and I caught
him because we have cameras all over the place, so
I said, hey, what are you doing? He goes, well,
you had some. I go it's my infin show. And
then he goes Okay. He got scolded. I said, don't
eat the food until we reveal it on the show.

(15:35):
And he's out there sneaking. I went, godly, yes, Marvin.

Speaker 4 (15:39):
So currently the meanest dan is the Danet that's not
here anymore.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
I would say Paul probably has the potential to be
the meanest reigning champion. I mean over the past decades.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
I gotta admit it here. I don't know why we're
being so disrespectful to Paul. It should be called Paul
Meanest Danet Award. And then try to figure out which
the three of us are generally nice people?

Speaker 2 (15:58):
You know, which one of us? Did me all right out?
It's kind of Marvin some days it's me. Someday that
is the pump as the war. Yeah, it's the Michael
Jordan not even close.

Speaker 5 (16:06):
V every year Michael Jordan and look for a new story.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
Let's take a break. We'll talk to Ross Tucker. Does
he think Nick Saban would come back and coach coach

Yeah, you blubber lip me.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
Well, you know what it's called over promise.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett will join us coming up
in an hour from now. More phone calls as well
eight seven to seven three DP show. He's our good buddy.
He's Ross Tucker, host of the Ross Tucker Football podcast,
calls games for CBS in Westwood One. He's available for birthdays,
bar Mitzvah's whatever it is. Ross will come by and

(19:01):
entertain the kids with football stories. As he joins us now,
great to see Ross. We talked a little bit about
Nick Saban and the suggestion that maybe he could come
back to the NFL and be specific, come back to
the Browns and try to pair him with Arch Manning.
Seems like a lot connecting the dots there for all

(19:22):
of that to happen, but let's just talk about the
likelihood that Saban would come back, but he would coach
in the NFL.

Speaker 6 (19:28):
I think it's unlikely.

Speaker 7 (19:30):
I mean, it's possible, I guess Dan if it's the
perfect situation, But I think he retired for a reason.
It certainly seems like he's loving being on ESPN and
college game day. He looks like he's having the time
of his life, and I don't blame him. It's kind
of a great way to segue after your coaching career.

(19:53):
You know, maybe if there was a perfect NFL situation,
he would come and try to show that he can
succeed at that level. I know, I've always kind of thought,
there's always this talk. Saban's the goat, Belichick's the goat.
Obviously one did it in college, one did in the NFL.
You know, maybe that's why they're switching sides here in

(20:16):
their seventies, right.

Speaker 6 (20:17):
Maybe Belichick wants to prove he.

Speaker 7 (20:19):
Can win in college, and then maybe Saban wants a
second chance in the NFL so that they can settle
once and for all, who's only the better football.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
Coach, well more likely to coach in the NFL Belichick
or Saban.

Speaker 6 (20:33):
Ooh, that is a good one.

Speaker 7 (20:37):
I think I'm still gonna say Belichick because it's very
clear and obvious that he still wants to do that, right.
I don't think anybody out there believes that Belichick would
have taken the North Carolina job if he had any
NFL opportunity. I don't really care what he says publicly
or privately. I believe that he wants to be an

(20:58):
NFL head coach. I think he wants to break Don
Schull's record. I think we all know he wants to
break Don Schull's record, and perhaps going North Carolina for
a year coaching there, maybe he can do enough there
to generate interest to get another NFL opportunity. But in
my mind, Dan, we know for a fact Belichick wants
to be a head coach in the NFL. We don't

(21:20):
even know if Saban wants to coach again, period. So
I'll go Belichick all day on that one.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
I'm trying to understand the logic with NFL owners. By
the way, I saw the revenue split, So the team
split over thirteen billion dollars and the Packers have to
reveal their reb share. It was four hundred and thirty
two million dollars that these teams got. Yeah, so Jerry

(21:47):
Jones with his situation now he has a salary cap
to deal with. So it's not like he's the Dodgers
and he can pay whatever he wants. But help me
understand the logic behind what's going on with my caparsites
and his contract.

Speaker 1 (22:02):
You know.

Speaker 7 (22:02):
The first thing I would say, Dan, that's interesting since
you reference to Packers. They have that mandatory retirement age
for their team president of seventy you know, and Mark Murphy,
I think this is his last week or whatever he's
been the team president. I always think about that when
on the same day Mike Brown at age eighty nine

(22:25):
and Jerry Jones at age eighty two are making comments
that don't really help them or their franchise. You know,
I guess I think of it this way, Dan, My
grandpa is one of my favorite people in the world
that I ever had in my life. I wouldn't have
wanted him speaking publicly after age eighty. And I don't

(22:49):
know if you know some of these guys, I don't
know if Jerry Jones is just maybe they're just at
the age where they just don't care, you know, like
they're in their eighties.

Speaker 6 (22:58):
But Jerry Jones out here.

Speaker 7 (23:00):
Saying, well, yeah, you want us to do these contracts early.
We did tray Von Diggs and Terrence Deele and you
saw how that went. And then he says, hey, we
made back the highest paid guy he missed two thirds
of the season.

Speaker 6 (23:13):
We could sign mikeh but he missed for it.

Speaker 7 (23:15):
I mean, Jerry Jones just doesn't care at all, and
he's just putting it out there. I've come to the
conclusion this Dan, I think there's two reasons because I
have racked my brain to try to understand the logic
of why the Cowboys operate the way they do contracts
you with their star players.

Speaker 6 (23:35):
I think there's two things. One is risk slash liability.

Speaker 7 (23:40):
Right, as soon as you give that guy the huge deal,
then the injury risk and the off field risk really falls.

Speaker 6 (23:50):
On the team more than the player.

Speaker 7 (23:53):
And I think Jerry Jones is on some level willing
to pay to just put that risk on the player.

Speaker 6 (23:59):
As long as possible.

Speaker 7 (24:00):
What if Michaeh Parsons gets hurt on the field or
off the field.

Speaker 6 (24:03):
What if he gets in trouble?

Speaker 7 (24:04):
Right, the only other rookie other than Stewart that hasn't
signed a contract yet is Brown's running back Quinn Shawn
Judkins because of that domestic battery arrest down in Florida.
You know, maybe they're waiting till the last possible second.
The other thing is, and we know this, Jerry realized

(24:25):
a few years ago that nothing generates attention during training
camp like a star player holdout. It's the top of
every website every day. The latest thing that Jerry said
about Micah's contractor that Micah Parsons said to the media.
You know, if you tried to calculate the free publicity,

(24:49):
the free pr that the Cowboys get every day that
Mike has not signed, it probably helps to make up
for what they're gonna have to pay him, which is more.
The problem is, and Cowboys fans know this. Waiting this
long makes you pay more, eats up more of the
salary gap. It's not good for the team. It's not

(25:10):
good for the football product on the field, even if
maybe it's beneficial for the business off the field.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
And then you got the Bengals situation. By the way,
those are all fair points that you made there. The
Bengals situation, you have an owner who inherited a football team,
and he is now saying that Trey Hendrickson shouldn't be
so emotional when it comes to his contract, and then
he gets emotional talking about the first round pick Shamar Stewart,

(25:41):
who's not in camp, and that you know this, I
forget what the word was, a foolishness. So he's getting
animated while complaining about Trey Hendrickson getting animated. And then
the Shamar Stewart logic here of Hey, they want to
put language in there that if I violate the Code

(26:02):
of Conduct policy then they're not going to pay me.
And then Mike Brown says, we don't want to pay
somebody who's going to be in jail. So if I'm
Shamar Stewart, don't I have enough confidence in myself that
I won't end up in jail. Therefore I don't need
that language there. Get paid, get in camp, stay out
of jail. That's not asking too much, is it.

Speaker 6 (26:24):
You know, there's a lot of good stuff there.

Speaker 7 (26:25):
Dan, Let's start with Mike Brown and what he said
about emotional cause that reminds me of when one of
the times when I got cut during my career, someone
was saying, like it's not personal you know, this is
just part of the business.

Speaker 6 (26:39):
And I said, it's not personal. You kind of just fired.

Speaker 7 (26:43):
Me, like, like, this is my life, this is my dream.
I've been doing this since I was five. You kind
of just fired me. It's going to be in the
cover paper of my hometown newspaper. Like there's nothing more
personal than this, Like this is like not this, It's
as personal as it gets. So I always laugh at
that part of it. I'll say two things on the

(27:07):
Bengals because these are two separate issues, right. The Trey
Hendrickson thing. You know, Dan, he signed a band aid
extension two years ago where he tacked on that extra year,
right He otherwise would have been a free agent this year.
And I think he and his representatives should have realized

(27:30):
it's the Bengals, right, like they're gonna do what they
can contractually and hold your feet to the fire. He
shouldn't have done that band aid a couple of years
ago if he didn't want to. And I have no
idea why any of these guys hold out anymore. He's
costing himself fifty thousand dollars a day, and the Bengals

(27:53):
are not the type of organization that's gonna make up
for that with the contract that they give you. You know,
there's other guys out that Michael Parsons isn't practicing right now.

Speaker 6 (28:02):
He says his back is tight or whatever.

Speaker 7 (28:05):
Right, We've seen guys hold in in recent years, Brandon Aiyuk,
Jamar Chase last year. Remember the first few days last
year at training camp, Tuatungo bay Aloa.

Speaker 6 (28:15):
And Jordan Love were both holdens.

Speaker 7 (28:18):
So why guys like Hendrick sin or McLaurin just throw
away fifty k per day is beyond me.

Speaker 6 (28:25):
I don't understand the logic there. Report.

Speaker 7 (28:28):
You're actually more of a distraction if you're there and
you're talking to media every day and you say your
hamstring hurts or your back hurts or whatever. The stupid
thing which I think the Bengals don't realize, is he's
gonna sign a four year, fully guaranteed contract.

Speaker 6 (28:46):
He's not eligible for a new deal regardless until after
his third year.

Speaker 7 (28:53):
Right, So whatever he's missing right now, he missed the offseason.

Speaker 6 (28:57):
He's missing training camp.

Speaker 7 (28:59):
The Bengals, Joe Burrow and these two star receivers in
their prime. In my opinion, Dan, it's actually more critical
or there should be a greater sense of urgency for
the Bengals to get Shamar Stewart in and get him
ready to contribute this year after their defense was horrendous
last year.

Speaker 6 (29:18):
Then it is for Shamar Stewart. I mean, the reality
is he.

Speaker 7 (29:21):
Could do nothing the next two years, but if his
third year he balls out, well, then he's going to
get a new contract. So the onus to me to
get Stuart in is on the Bengals. If this contract
language is that important to them, then bump up his
signing bonus. They like to give him half now and
half in six months. Throw them a bone. Here's half now,

(29:44):
we'll give the other half in a month. Sign this
thing that says if you go to jail, we don't.

Speaker 6 (29:48):
Have to pay you.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
I don't know if you saw the news. Justin Fields
was carted off practice with the Jets today, and I
don't know the severity of this. I'm waiting for Chefty
to have an update on this. Kirk Cousins is going
to be in play at some point to some team.
It feels like now, once again, I don't know the
injury and the severity of that, but it just feels

(30:10):
like Kirk Cousins is in the on deck circle for now.
I don't know if the Jets say we're willing to
bring in somebody like that with the amount of money
that they're probably going to have to pay, it's probably
going to have to be a team that, you know,
they're going to be a playoff team if they lose
you know, a starting quarterback. But I'm not sure if
the Jets would have Kirk Cousins in play or the

(30:34):
number of teams that would be considering Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 7 (30:36):
What do you think, Well, yeah, it's a great point, Dan,
and I'll you know, no matter.

Speaker 6 (30:41):
How severe the injury is to.

Speaker 7 (30:44):
Fields, I'll actually give the Atlanta Falcons some credit for
hanging on to Cousins and not kind of selling low
during the offseason because an injury like this, you know,
the Jets or if he's out for the year, the
Jets are not going to go into the season with

(31:05):
the other guys they have on the roster right now
as their starter, right, They're not going to have that
be the case. So that makes Kirk Cousins very much
in play because remember this, right, Aaron Glenn, new head
coach Mouji, the new GM they're trying to establish their culture.

Speaker 6 (31:24):
It's a new regime, and I think they.

Speaker 7 (31:27):
Want to get off to a good start in terms
of having a solid season and winning, and Cousins would
give them that opportunity. The flip side, which is fascinating, okay,
is that it's supposed to be a really good draft
for quarterbacks.

Speaker 6 (31:46):
We know all the guys Arch Manning and nuss Meyer
and Drew Aller and all the names that are out there.
You know, maybe there's a case to be made where
the Jets.

Speaker 7 (31:56):
Say, oh, it's tough luck with fields, and you know,
there's nobody else really out there.

Speaker 6 (32:01):
We got to go with these guys.

Speaker 7 (32:02):
And then maybe the Jets get the number one pick
in the draft and they have their pick of what's
supposed to be a really good draft class.

Speaker 6 (32:10):
There's really two ways they could go.

Speaker 7 (32:12):
They could go the Cousins or maybe try to sign
Ryan Tannehill.

Speaker 6 (32:16):
But I think we all forgot just didn't play football
last year.

Speaker 7 (32:19):
Maybe they go that route to try to still be
competitive this year, or maybe they use this as an
excuse to throw their hands up and play a little moneyball,
if you will, and get the number one overall pick.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
Why is it. Next year's draft is always the best
draft for quarterback, right because until next year, you.

Speaker 7 (32:39):
Know why, because we haven't picked these guys apart yet, right, Like,
you only pick the guys apart that are in that
year's class. Then it's when it's the next year you think, oh, man,
I saw Aler do this against Oregon.

Speaker 6 (32:52):
I saw that him do that. I saw nuss Meyer
do this.

Speaker 7 (32:55):
But then when you just are like when they're the
guy the next year and we all watch him every
week and really critique him, then you start to find
the flaws and the warts. But we're not at that
stage yet. That'll happen about midway through this year. There
will start to be some reports.

Speaker 6 (33:12):
You know, he's really not as good as we thought
he was. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
A friend of mine who's a scout, he always laughs,
you know when I do, you know, have a draft
analysts on and because he knows that once they get
their hands on somebody like that's that's the real stuff.
The other stuff is just sort of, hey, I think
this guy's got you know, a great high upside. Uh

(33:38):
you know, he does this and that, and the scouts
go in there and go, okay, guys, you guys done. Now,
let us go to work, and then all of a
sudden we go you know, such and such as slipping. Well,
maybe he was put up too high to begin with,
because the scouts wouldn't have put him up there, or
somebody's rising, just like that happened with Mahomes. When my

(33:59):
friend said, after we sat down with him, then all
of a sudden, we realized that if we're going to
go get him, we're gonna have to trade up to
get this guy. And he said, you know, they didn't
get the Mahomes in Kansas City, but he said, you know,
that's when you realize, like, oh my gosh, It's like
when Jerry West worked out Kobe and he said, no, no,

(34:21):
we're gonna shut it down. Wait, he's only been working
out fifteen minutes. We've seen enough. We don't want anybody
to realize just how good this kid is.

Speaker 6 (34:30):
You know, Dan, it happened this offseason.

Speaker 7 (34:33):
That's exactly what happened with Shador Sanders and Tyler Shuck.
I mean, in November, Shador Sanders was going to be
the number one or number two pick, and nobody even knew.

Speaker 6 (34:44):
Who Tyler Shuck was.

Speaker 7 (34:46):
He's the kid that gets injured all the time that
used to be at Oregon. But then when the scouts
got in there and really watched the tape, and then
when they met with them, Shuck went like this and
Shador went like this, and hand.

Speaker 6 (34:59):
Signal are not great for radio.

Speaker 7 (35:01):
So I will tell everybody that Shuck shot up and
Shador Sanders went down.

Speaker 2 (35:12):
Great to catch up with you. We'll talk soon. Thank you.

Speaker 6 (35:15):
Oh he sounds great. Thanks Dan.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
That's Ross Tucker, the Ross Tucker Football podcast, and he
calls games for CBS in Westwood One. We love you know,
when the draft analyst and you know guys are going
to put uh uh you know these pages social media,
we eat it up, you know, we we love it.
We like the speculation. Hey, give me the mock draft

(35:38):
for this year. You can already find mock drafts. But
I don't know how good arch Manning is. I now,
I know how good we're told he is, or I
saw glimpses of that, but I don't. I don't know. Uh,
you know, he was talking about Shuck, who's going to
start for the New Orleans Saints. You know my source said,

(36:00):
when he once again they realized how bright he was.
That Yes, there's injuries, but they realized how bright he
was when they throw a play out or explain what
you did on this play, or explain what is happening
on this play. They said that that's what really stood out.
He could make the throws. Yes, he's a little bit older,

(36:21):
but you could give him a game plan right away,
and that stood out and he'll end up being probably
the starting quarterback for the Saints. We have an update
on Justin Field's injury. We'll also play an NFL game
right after this.

an update. This is from me in Rapaport Justin Fields,

(37:08):
who left training camp practice today. He was carted off
after suffering a lower leg injury. According to a head
coach Aaron Glenn, it is a toe injury. Glenn indicated
that he believes somebody stepped on Justin Field's foot, so
I guess that's good news. We don't know the severity

(37:28):
of the toe injury, but it's not a knee, but
we'll see when he's able to return to training camp.

Speaker 5 (37:35):
Yes, Paul, there are certain words on injury reports or
news reports that really get you nervous. Cart it off
phrase cart it off really makes you nervous. They could
have just carted him to the trainer because it's far
and it's hot. He doesn't didn't, you know, with it and.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
A toe injury.

Speaker 5 (37:50):
A toe injury because it's a small body part doesn't
sound like a big deal, but it could be a
really bad injury.

Speaker 2 (37:56):
Unless you get turf toe. Because players will tell you
about turf toe. I know it's uh doesn't sound that threatening,
but you know, it ended. I think Jack Lambert's career,
Dion dealt with it. Dion's still dealing with it. Uh,
But yeah, I think that that's there's always that possibility

(38:17):
of turf toe. You know, when somebody says, how did
your career end? Turf toe? Huh? Yeah, it's like how
did the planner fasci ey do well, that costs todd.

Speaker 10 (38:27):
He was picking right, it's a lot tougher think.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Yes, yes, I think you got to say he was.

Speaker 10 (38:34):
Driven over or escorted to the sidelines, so people don't
panic right away. To police's point, because that card thing
sounds like, oh my god, they're gonna miss weeks one
through nine now because he had to be carried off
the field or carted off the field. Anything was carried
or cart it is just terrible.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
Okay, but he was taken away on a cart, so
he was carted all I was.

Speaker 10 (38:53):
Helped over to the sideline. Just until you find out
more things about him. Why panic everybody.

Speaker 2 (38:59):
Because we're the media. Yes, yes, paul.

Speaker 5 (39:02):
Even the way you said it taken away on a cart,
I'm like, oh, well, of course he'd be taken away
a cart.

Speaker 2 (39:07):
He's the quarterback, and but cart it off. Was like, yeah,
all right, we have an NFL game. I don't know
what the NFL game is, but Paulie, you're here to
tell me.

Speaker 5 (39:17):
Here it is, Dan, I was thinking about this. The
NFL team you're most curious to see how they're gonna
do this.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
Year, good or bad? Curious.

Speaker 5 (39:26):
I'll go first and give you an example. I'm very
curious to see what the Las Vegas Raiders do this year.
They have a new head coach in Pete Carroll, who
has a great track record. Gino Smith is a good quarterback.
They bring an Ashton genty and he's gonna get a
lot of run. That established as a running game. Brock
Bauers was super last year. They appears they have a
good offense and a good defense, and nobody's talking about them.

(39:49):
So I'm curious about the.

Speaker 2 (39:50):
Raiders, Todd, who were you curious about?

Speaker 10 (39:53):
I am extremely curious about the Pittsburgh Steelers. Is this
gonna be an amazing thing? It's just gonna be a disaster.
I don't see it's going in the middle ground. Even
though the Steelers have been that average nine win team.
What is going to happen to the Steelers with Aaron
Rodgers this year?

Speaker 2 (40:07):
All right? Seton, who were you curious about?

Speaker 3 (40:10):
I'm curious about the Arizona Cardinals. They were like four
and thirteen there then they doubled their win total last year.

Speaker 2 (40:21):
Kyler Murray is healthy.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
I feel like they've maybe upgraded a couple of pieces there.
This might be the first time in a while, we're
getting a true sense of what the Cardinals and Kyler
Murray are like.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
Well, I thought that Marvin Harrison junior the third was
going to be that guy who got one hundred catches.
Maybe maybe year or two, Marvin, Who are you curious about?

Speaker 4 (40:44):
I'm curious about the Atlanta Falcons. Well, Michael Pennick's junior
at the Helm. Now I think Kyle Pitts, I thought
he was going to be a position life changer. Drake London,
b John Robinson, I think he got a lot of talent,
But I'd love to see what Pennis Une he does
for them at quarterback.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
Those are all great curiosities. I'm curious about the Jacksonville Jaguars.
And you got a new coach who did wonders with
Baker Mayfield in Tampa as offensive coordinator and can he help?
Are we going to see the full potential? Trevor Lawrence Like,
we're getting to the point where you go, I don't know,

(41:26):
and maybe this is the year there's some magic there,
you know. They I thought that they were going to
win that division last year. I thought that they had
the talent to do that. Thought the Texans would take
a little bit of a drop there, but man hasn't happened.
They probably still in the the after stink of Urban

(41:48):
Meyer there. It feels like he can't blame him now, Yes,
PAULI bonus pick.

Speaker 5 (41:53):
How about the Seattle Seahawks ten and seven last year?
They bring in Sam Darnold and let Gino Smith go
Which direction? Will it go better or worse?

Speaker 2 (42:03):
You lose DK Metca Yes?

Speaker 6 (42:07):
Tom? What should the.

Speaker 10 (42:07):
Curiosity level be of the Detroit Lions after the way
things went so horribly at the end? Can they shake
that off and bounce back? This still great team? But
what will be of the Lions especially the first few
weeks of the season?

Speaker 2 (42:18):
Thank you, Tod, Welcome to I got a bonus curiosity
team Final Hour on the way on this Thursday. Jason Garrett,
former coach, he'll join us. I hope you'll stay with us.
