Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
On a Tucker Tuesday edition of The Dan Patrick Show,
Ross Tucker in for Dan again today.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
He was on a family vac.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
And we were blessed with two awesome championship game ending
series ending season ending games last night in both college
baseball and the NHL.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
It was awesome.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
My only frustration was that I was in a hotel
room that only had one TV, and so there were
some decisions that had.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
To be made. I was primarily on.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
The hockey because it was six ' to one, Tennessee
was up. The only time I really had a conflict
was when Texas A and M in the top of
the ninth was the top the bottom of whatever? In
the ninth inning? Last chance for text A and M
the rallying, But it's like the middle of the third

(01:03):
period of.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
The hockey that that was. That was a tough spot
to be in.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
Did you have the last channel button on there? And
sometimes hotels don't have a good remote.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
It did not have a good last channel button. When
I hit the back button, it would take me back
to the guide. That is such a critical button. If
we have anybody out there that's a controller manufacturer, don't
even think about making a controller without a back button
or a last button.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
That takes you to the channel you were just on.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Even the current setup I have back in Pennsylvania, it's
like you have to hit the button twice, if that
makes sense.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
It like it takes you back and shows you what
you were just looking at. Oh no, but then you
have to hit it again.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
And then there's with the streaming services. Let's say one
show is on a street, the one game you're watching
is on one streaming service, and then another. You have
to exit that stream service, reconnect with the other streaming
service to get to the other game. It could be
like almost thirty seconds, which is no good.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Could be a while.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
This summer, things get a bit more despicable as grew
the world's fa what am I reading right now? The
world's favorite super villain turned anti villain League Agent returned
for an exciting, bold new era of Minion's Mayhem, packed
with NonStop action and filled with illumination, signature, subversive humor.

(02:30):
Despicable me fo hits theaters on July third. So this
is funny. I thought I was not. I thought this
was like an NBC thing. Because we're on Peacock. I
was not expected to be about Grew and Despicable Me before.
My kids love that movie. They love Grew, they love
Despicable Me.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
That is awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Also awesome, I have so many of you listening to
us on the Fox Sports radio affiliates all around the country.
Those of you that watch us on Peacock, I know
a bunch of you check us out later or watch
or listen to the rest of it later, either on
YouTube or via podcast. I appreciate that you can check
mine out if you want at some point Ross Tucker

(03:12):
Football Podcast, and yes, I am checking out your social
posts to me at DP show and at Ross Tucker NFL.
Good chance we'll get to a call or to this
hour eight seven seven three DP Show.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
And I think the question to start things off.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Is the same one that Seton just posted to social media,
which is Connor McDavid winning the con Smythe trophy is like,
what so the con smythe trophy. For those of you
not as familiar with hockey, it's not like the Super
Bowl MVP. It's the MVP of the entire postseason, and

(03:55):
he kind of did deserve it, but it just is
very rare in sports for a guy to win the
Marquee Award Individual award that didn't play for the championship team.
Your thoughts, Fritzy on what what would you compare it
to winning the cons My trophy in a losing effort

(04:19):
is like.

Speaker 5 (04:21):
Being presented with a giant bucket of mini hot dogs,
which I love so much, but I'm going through about
of gastrointestinal problems and I can't have any of it.
And it's just a bowl of my favorite food right
in front of me, and I can't touch it because
I'm on a liquid diet.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Hey, when you have those fritzy, you please tell me
you have them with spicy mustard.

Speaker 5 (04:41):
Yes, I'm saying that for you. I will have it
with any kind of mustard, but spicy mustard does give
it a little kid No.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
But what's like your go to?

Speaker 5 (04:48):
I'd say the Gouldens spicy brown mustard refirst, but I
can do frenches yellow mustard.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Wait is it Gouldens and not Goldens. It's spelled Gouldens.
I always thought it was called gul. I don't know
why g we would be gold Why is that ghoul? Goule?
Is g o U l?

Speaker 5 (05:03):
Yeah, but g O l d e n is golden,
So why would g U l d n be the
same pronunciation?

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Goal like a seagull? Oh, golden like Goldens? I thought golden.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
So commercials growing up there, it was Goulden's mustard, that's
what they called it.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Anybody have any knowledge here? Marv checkling, googling, Google checking. Also,
I DONI about gray poopon or high end mustards.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
That's too snooty, right, I don't.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Mind them if that's if that's all you got, you know,
it's so funny. I it's so distinctly. Remember that commercial
where the guy pulls up in a limo and he
pulls the window down. He says, pardon me, sir, do
you have any gray poupon?

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Such a like?

Speaker 2 (05:43):
How many commercials really stick with you twenty thirty years later?
That's one of them, PAULI.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
I just found an old commercial from the past. G
U L d e n s Goulden's mustards.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Golden's like a ghoule. Okay, so Fritzy was right. It's scary, spicy.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
I didn't know that. Paully Connor McDavid. Winning the cons mic.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Is like like losing your dog, your dog either dies
or is lost, and someone buys you, puts up a
give you a photograph of your dog to have in
your house forever. It's a constant reminder of the pain.
That's the only that I could think of. Like, you
lose your dog and then there's a picture of it,
which you're still proud that you had the dog. You
know you loved that dog. But like if you're Connor

(06:27):
McDavid and they send you the trophy because he probably
didn't pick it up, it's a constant reminder of the loss.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
So I have a question, do we think this is
a good idea? Like, I think most of us would
agree that he's deserving. Right, he just had an unpressed
and a run. He set the record for assists. I
think most people would agree he's deserving. I guess my
issue with it is if you give it to a
player from the losing team, they.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Don't really enjoy it. He could, he didn't even.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Go out there to get it. It just seems like
bad practice in this instance. I guess it feels rewarded.
I guess it feels merited, But my thing is, like,
couldn't you have given it to the goalie for the Panther.
I mean, I feel like, give it to someone that's
going to enjoy. We actually have some sound of at

(07:19):
some point, even though he didn't accept it, at some point,
someone did ask him a question in the postgame presser
about winning the MVP.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Here's Conor McDavid last night.

Speaker 5 (07:30):
Constant.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
Yeah, you know, obviously I guess an Honor puts the
names on that trophy.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
But yeah, I mean, this is this is why I
don't think it's a good idea to give it to
a guy in a losing effort. I mean, at least
he did the interview where Rory McElroy just skipped out
on the US Open. At least McDavid did the interview
even though they But I just feel.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Like I like happiness.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
I like people having joy, and it would have been
so much cooler in the arena if they announced Brabrovski
and the arena went crazy and they're so happy, and
he got to grab it and accept it.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
But I think McDavid's deserving. Fritzy.

Speaker 5 (08:25):
It's like winning both showcase on the price is right,
not only did you win the Cup, you also got
the CONSMEC Trophy. Not to mention that it was extremely
awkward when Gary Bettman announced him and he's just standing
there with the award and McDavid's not skating over there
to hold it up or acknowledge it in any way,
and on the most important game in many years in hockey,
certainly for their team. He kind of was a no
show in Game seven and now he's being awarded the

(08:47):
cons My Trophy. I know it's for a series of
games and it's all the playoffs, but just a weird, sour,
awkward note.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
So there's a lot of different things about that that
you just said that I think are interesting. Number One,
I don't think he was a no show. If you watch,
they showed he had like three or four passes where
his guys very easily could have knocked those in for goals.
So I mean it didn't come to fruition. But that's

(09:14):
kind of hockey. I also think on some level.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Hockey does it right.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
It's always weird to me when they announced the NFL MVP,
who just lost in the divisional round or just lost
in the conference championship. Now like he's at the NFL
Honors at the super Bowl and he's not in the
super Bowl because his team just lost because the other guy, Mahomes,
played better than Lamar Jackson. But yet here's Lamar.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Jackson accepting the MVP.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
It's weird to me that the NFL doesn't include the
playoffs on some level. But if you're not gonna include
the playoffs, then how about giving the guy the award
right after the season. Why are we waiting a month
to give out a regular season award? That feels weird
because it's like, hey, here you go. You're not gonna

(10:05):
get to the Lombardi Trophy because you remember, remember when
you didn't play very well against the Chiefs the Astucate,
Remember when you forced that pass and do an interception,
and that's why the Chiefs are in the super.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Bowl and they're gonna win it, and they got Mahomes
and but here's your MVP. It just we got to
figure this out. It shouldn't be this.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
Hard, PAULI, I think I think you're absolutely right on
that going back to the cons might. Once people realize
that it's for the entire playoffs, I think it becomes
more palatable. But I think a lot of people when
they tune into hockey or Stanley Cup Finals, they see
the cons might they think Oh, it's the Stanley Cup MVP,
Stanley Cup Finals MVP, right, And while it's awkward, it's

(10:42):
also very fair to the entire playoff run by McDavid.
But I don't think you should ever win an MVP
of the NBA Finals or the Super Bowl if you're
on the losing team, because it's it's just for that
game and you. I don't think it's should ever be
given to a losing player.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Seaton.

Speaker 7 (10:59):
It is the right thing to do and also super
weird at the same time. It really is because you know,
Connor McDavid just looks at it and it's just like, well,
I played great but not good enough. You know, for
him that no matter how great he played, even though
he was the best player of the entire playoffs, it
still wasn't good enough. That's what that is, just a

(11:20):
reminder of every single time, well I played great but
not good enough.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
So do you.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
I guess it depends that type of person you are.
You look at that and say, it's not my fault,
it's the other guys around me were good about.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
I was the MVP.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Not my fault we didn't win the Stanley Cup, or
because you were just saying it's seton like I played great,
but at what like not good enough? Yeah, there are
some people that would look at it and be like, well,
look that's proof that it wasn't my fault. I haven't
won the cup yet, I was the MVP. What more
can I do than be the MVP?

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Put some better players? Right, Hey, why don't you do
something dry soddle.

Speaker 7 (11:58):
Lean, dry sidle. How would you look at it? Would
you be not my fault guy? Or wasn't good enough guy?

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (12:07):
It would be it wouldn't. It wouldn't be about that.
It would be just the utter disappointment that we didn't win.
It wouldn't be like I should have done more. I
don't think it would be I should have done more,
my teamates should have done more. It would just be devastation.
Because that's what's so cool about sports in general, and

(12:30):
really team sports in particular. No matter what individual accomplishment
you can ever achieve, it doesn't come close to winning
a team championship. It's like the shared experience, the accomplishing
a common goal with a group of men together that

(12:53):
trumps any individual thing.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
You can ever accomplish.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Right, So, like what I love two have been a
good enough player that would be in the Hall of Fame. Absolutely,
I would much rather win the Super Bowl than be
in the Hall of Fame. Much rather win the Super
Bowl than be in the Hall of Fame because the
shared experience and the bond that you have with those
guys forever. And I know there's a bond among Hall

(13:19):
of Fame players, it's just different, Paulie.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
You played at Princeton for four years. Princeton is always
quality football in the IVY League. Did you win a title?

Speaker 3 (13:26):
Nope?

Speaker 4 (13:27):
What years were you there?

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Ninety seven through two thousand seasons?

Speaker 4 (13:31):
Okay, so right before you got there, a few years
after you got there.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
I'm aware of Thank you, Paul.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
I know I'm not making fun of them. I'm saying,
what would have That's one of those things. It would
have felt like you were in a club forever. Right,
Let's say you were on the junior year of college,
won the IVY League title.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
You know what, paul, It's so funny you say this
because in a couple of weeks they're honoring the guys
the year above me and I'll be at the Princeton
Football Association golf event, and the bond for the guys
that were on teams that won championships is significantly stronger

(14:07):
than the bond for the teams of the guys that didn't.
You know, the ninety five guys won it, the ninety
two guys won it, and you just see them and
they've wanted a bunch recently, and they just have this
thing that it's like we did it, we did it together,
and nobody can ever take it from us. And unfortunately,

(14:30):
both college and pros, I.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
Don't have that.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
In fact, to my knowledge, I think I only won
one championship, and I whole like maybe forty seasons of
playing sports if you count like growing up playing youth
soccer and youth baseball. The only championship I remember is
my junior year of high school football. That's the only
chance and that bond I have with those guys. I

(14:56):
if I go back to my hometown and I see
those guys, I'm not friends with them at all, and
I hugged them like like we are. I hugged them
like they're my cousins.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
It's it's just awesome.

Speaker 7 (15:11):
Did you play in any other finals games or like
championship games but lose?

Speaker 3 (15:19):
I lost?

Speaker 2 (15:20):
I lost a district semifinal my senior year, So it
wasn't the championship, but it was the semifinals, and it
was overtime and we held them to a field goal.
We were at the two yard lines. My senior year,
were playing our biggest rival, by the way, who had
just beaten us the week before for the league championship.

(15:40):
They beat us the week before with the league championship.
Now we're in the district playoffs. We have a chance,
we tie, We go to overtime, we hold them to
a field goal. In high school football, you get the
ball to ten yard line. We got eight yards on
first down. Yes, we're at the two yard line. Our
quarterback fumbled the snatch. They jumped on it. That's how

(16:01):
my high school career ended. And it really stinks because
I think, if I like listed it like five worst losses,
five best wins, the five worst losses trump the five
best wins.

Speaker 5 (16:15):
Unfortunately, it's safe to say you don't keep in touch
with that quarterback that pubbled the ball.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
No, I know him, I know him a friend. No, no, no.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
So first of all, it was it was it was
a it was a rainy night. He was only a sophomore,
and I don't. I never like went back and watched
the Zappruder film of how much was the center and.

Speaker 3 (16:36):
How much was him?

Speaker 2 (16:37):
I don't really know, and it was a rainy night
and he was only in tenth grade. But it's unfortunate.
It's really unfortunate because it's a big reason why when
I watched sports, I don't ever want there to be
a goat. I'm always rooting for there to be a
hero like I would have rather in that instance the

(17:00):
other team like made some incredible play, or that they
had a kid that went to Villanova, like he had
an eighty hour touchdown run.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
That's how we lost. I want someone to do something.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
I don't want there to be a goat that has
to have that hanging over his head. Thankfully, he's got
a great life going and it's not. But man, this
show is so awesome. What are we even talking about
right now? How do we get to this point? Pauli's
over here rubbing it in that I had four losing
seasons in college.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
I didn't know if I did it beforehand and asked
for fresh yet, that'd be mean spirited.

Speaker 7 (17:33):
Hey, did you know that you were a bookended by championships?
Actually or it was only your years that they didn't win.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
You know what's crazy about that? I know we gotta
get to a guest, but you know what's crazy about that?
I don't know if you guys know this. The year before,
maybe the best offensive lineman for the New England Patriots
this century, Okay, in the twenty first century is Logan Mankins. Okay,
maybe he's maybe the best offensive lineman that they had.

(18:01):
Do you guys realize they won the super Bowl the
year before Logan got drafted in the first round. He
was with the Patriots I want to say nine years,
and then he left for the Bucks and they won
the super Bowl the next year. So anybody that ever
met Logan would be like, dude, you're awesome on those
Super Bowl teams, He's the He's the best old lineman

(18:23):
they had in the twenty first century. Matt Light was fantastic,
and they've had other good guys, but Logan was the
best one they've had.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Nine He is the human donut.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
Hole of nine years, the only they won three out
of four and then nine years Logan goes to seven
Pro Bowls.

Speaker 3 (18:44):
He leaves, they win it the.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Next year, which is just absolutely brutal. Speaking of brutal,
I'm curious to get your opinion of JJ Reddick's press conference. Yes,
I'm not saying it was brutal. I'm just saying there
was maybe some brutal language that was used. Kobe Price

(19:07):
is a Lakers reporter for the Southern California News Group.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
He was there.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
Yesterday, and man, there were two or three I usually
don't care about press conferences at all, there were two
or three notable comments from Reddick coming out of the
press conference. So we'll take a quick interview with Kobe
to find out his thoughts on that when we come
back twenty minutes past the hour here on the Dan

(19:32):
Patrick Show.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
Hey, what's up everybody?

Speaker 8 (19:46):
It's me three time pro bowler LeVar Arrington, and I
couldn't be more excited to announce a podcast called Up
on Game?

Speaker 3 (19:53):
What is up on Game?

Speaker 8 (19:54):
You asked, along with my fellow pro bowler TJ. Huschman
Zada and Super Bowl champion Yep, that's right, Plexico Burris.
You can only name a show with that type of
talent on it. Up on Game We're going to be
sharing our real life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen
to Up on Game with me lebar Arrington, TJ. Houchman,

(20:16):
Zada and Plexico Burrs on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts
or wherever you get your podcast from.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
We are going to get back to a little bit
of hockey talk a little bit later in the show.
We might have to check in with our guy Matty Rose,
who's gloating in Calgary since he doesn't have to deal
with the hated Edmonton Oilers winning the Cup and bringing
it back to Canada for the first time in thirty

(20:47):
one years. But there was big news in the NBA
yesterday in the sense that JJ Reddick had his opening
press conference, and you know it could have been one
of those press conferences is as the new head coach
the Lakers, that nothing eventful happens, nobody really talks about it.
And a lot of times when people have a press conference,

(21:08):
that's the goal. Sometimes when they have a press conference,
that's not the goal. Sometimes when they have a press conference,
they want to send a message and.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
I would say.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
JJ at least sent one message when he was asked
about the outside noise regarding his lack of experience in
getting the head coaching position in LA.

Speaker 5 (21:30):
What misconceptions or concerns about you that you've heard in
the last few weeks?

Speaker 3 (21:35):
Are you most like looking forward to just spelling?

Speaker 9 (21:40):
It's a valid question, and I've certainly heard everything. You know,
It's it's been a really interesting six weeks or so
just in terms of, you know, being part of the
engagement farming industry. You know, it's been really interesting. However,

(22:01):
I don't really have a great answer for your question
because I really don't give up. Like, honestly, I want
to coach the Lakers. I want to coach the team.
I don't want to dispel anything. I don't. I want
to become a great coach in the NBA, and I
want to win championships and I want my players to

(22:21):
maximize their careers. That's all I care about.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
JJ Reddick. You know, I'll tell you the part about
that I appreciate is when he said I see everything, because.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
So often people are like, I don't.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
Read that stuff. I don't hear or read that stuff.
You know what, Bill Plashki writes about me, I don't care.
That doesn't matter. I don't ever see that. Well, how
did you know he wrote something about you.

Speaker 4 (22:49):
I'm a big boy and swearing doesn't bother me. I'm
not like, oh he swore, I'm offended, But I was
a little surprised that he went that way in his
first Laker interview. He was the first Laker pres convers that,
you know, if it really didn't bother him, he would
have maybe blown off the question a little bit, and
he knows it's coming. He has no doubt that question's coming.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
Well, hold that thought, because I think there's a lot
there that I want to get into with you guys
as it relates to not just JJ Reddick.

Speaker 3 (23:15):
Dropping the F bomb a couple times, but just in general.
I don't ever remember athletes ever saying the F word
after a game, and now you hear it more and more.
It's kind of become more common. I don't know if
that's like something with the people in their twenties or thirties. Now,
I feel like I'm like that old guy. I can't
believe these kids are using the F word these days.

(23:36):
We'll get in that a little bit later.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
I want to first talk to Kobe Price, because Kobe
covers the Lakers for the Southern California News Group. He
was at the press conference yesterday, and so I guess
I'll just start with that.

Speaker 3 (23:50):
Kobe. I appreciate you coming on the show.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
Just your initial reaction to JJ's press conference in general,
just sort of the tone of it.

Speaker 6 (24:01):
Yeah, well, first off, thank you for having me on.
I really appreciate it. But just the general tone of
the press conference. You know, maybe it's the tone, but
it felt like, you know, he won the day. He
won the press conference, he did everything he sells to
do with the Lakers starts to do yesterday, and it
was very much just a lot of talking about for thinking,

(24:21):
innovation and how, yes, this JJ higher is unorthodox, but
that's kind of what the Lakers are going for, especially
in this modern NBA where the CBA is going to
require different, you know, different from teams in terms.

Speaker 3 (24:34):
Of how they build out their rosters.

Speaker 6 (24:36):
So the tone was optimistic and hopeful, especially and that
was kind of necessary considering that JJ is not a
typical NBA head coach in terms of his resume and
what his prior experience. But the general themes in the
general move was just one of optimism, hopeful and just

(24:57):
you know, an eagerness to see how this will all unfold.
I think I think that's the best way to describe it.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Kobe, What was your reaction to the answer he gave
that we just played. I know you could hear that
where he say he doesn't give an f what What
was your thoughts on the language that he used in
the way in which he said it.

Speaker 6 (25:17):
Uh, First off, as soon as he said it, it's
weird how this happens. Like in my brain, I just thought,
I know this is going to go viral. Like there's
no chance that this is not but viral. This would
be shared across social media within ten minutes and it's
going to be a big hit. Maybe I'm part of
I've heard you what you were saying. You couldn't believe
all these twenty and thirty year old athletes who are

(25:39):
cursing all the time now dropping the bium. Maybe I'm
one of them. He kind of didn't phaze me that much.
I was just like, oh, okay, well that's kind of me.
I think also kind of shows his personality. I think
sometimes you're when you're in these press conference modes, you know,
they're so buttoned up and they want to get you know,
all these things right. But I think there was a
level of authenticity from you've got really got your first

(26:02):
personality and maybe how he'll communicate, which we obviously saw
on his podcast and you know, down the line, and
him being a player for fifteen plus years, including college.
But I wasn't too much phased by it. I think
I know some people were a little confused by the.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
Answer or why he chose.

Speaker 6 (26:19):
To drop the F bomb at that moment, but I
think it just showed kind of him in essence. So
for me, I was just like, all right, there you go.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
He said it.

Speaker 6 (26:29):
And I think even Rob, I mean, I don't know
if he got picked up by the audio on the mics,
but even Rob was like, there you go, yeah, there
it is so.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
Kobe, if you don't mind me asking, hell, old are
you twenty seven? Okay? Do you think, like for you
and your age group, does that endear JJ to you?

Speaker 2 (26:49):
Do you think it was cool that he dropped the
F bomb that it will now be a five second
clip that's on TikTok and Instagram reels and all that stuff.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
Does that ingratiate JJ with a younger audience, it probably does.

Speaker 6 (27:06):
I mean for me personally, I don't know whether it's
cool or not.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
I'm not offended by it.

Speaker 6 (27:11):
I'll say that it doesn't bother me. I can understand
why I would bother people, but for me personally, doesn't
bother me. But I definitely think that for a younger
audience or people maybe more around like my group, it
is like a cooler, edgier you know, when you appear
to not be as buttoned up or if you don't
like the Obviously he's wearing a students hide, but the

(27:33):
symbol of a students high when you don't appear that way,
it does help you probably within it, it does help
you with the younger audience. So yeah, I think he
probably wants some cline unquote cool points.

Speaker 2 (27:42):
With that talk with Kobe probably who covers the Lakers
for the Southern California News Group.

Speaker 3 (27:48):
So what do you think the plan is now? Kobe?

Speaker 2 (27:51):
Starting with the draft tomorrow night, and I know there's
been so much conversation about Brownie James, what do you
think that Lakers are going to try to do to
give JJ Redick the best chance to have success with
this roster.

Speaker 6 (28:04):
Yeah, I know, we spoke about it obviously. During the
press conference yesterday, the draft was brought up a little
bit and yeah, so he Rob was asked about, you know,
potentially trading you know, for you know, bigger star player
or even a couple of smaller moves, and Rob acknowledged
that if the perfect trade lines up, obviously it would
make a move. But in the modern NBA, especially I

(28:25):
brought it up earlier the CBA, some of these trades
are going to be harder to make. And a big,
a big talking point from yesterday was player development. The
emphasis they're going to put on player development. So with that,
you know, two days later, it would be maybe not surprising,
but a little bit off the theme of yesterday if

(28:46):
they did try to you know, acquire bigger player, I
would expect for them to even if they traded upper,
traded down, I would expect for them to use the
first round draft pick on a you know, on a
draft prospect and bring that player in onto their roster.
Briannie James obviously is the big talking point for for
good reason. For big reason, he would be more more

(29:07):
so a second round opportunity for the Lakers more than
likely on Thursday. So and the Lakers don't have their
peek until the second round pick until later in the
second round, So maybe he is there and maybe he's not.
I know there's some other teams are interested. But if
if Ronnie's there for the Lakers, I believe at fifty

(29:27):
five in the second round, I would be very surprised
if they if they passed up on him.

Speaker 2 (29:33):
Didn't he say he didn't want to play with his dad,
like he wanted to do his own thing.

Speaker 3 (29:37):
What did he say? I forget.

Speaker 6 (29:41):
I can't remember exactly the quote, but I don't I
think he said something along the lines of it. It
wasn't something that he necessarily wanted or sought after. I
don't think he's necessarily said he didn't want it, But
I don't think he said that. That's something like that.
That wasn't a goal, If that makes.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
Sense, got it? Kobe really appreciate the time. Thank you
so much for coming on the show.

Speaker 6 (30:03):
Oh appreciate you having me on there.

Speaker 9 (30:05):
He is.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Kobe Price covers the Lakers for the Southern California News Group.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
You know, it's funny.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
I'm just sitting here thinking, guys, I was always kind
of taught or I look at things right, Like when
I'm talking in general, but especially in public, would I
want my grandma?

Speaker 3 (30:28):
Like?

Speaker 2 (30:28):
What would my grandma's think of what I'm saying? And
what would my kids think? I don't know if JJ
Reddick has kids or not. My daughters are twelve and
almost eleven. My grandmas have passed at this point. But
I guess I just think I'm not like some prude.
I've used the F word. People use the F word

(30:49):
all the time, but I guess I just think in
an opening press conference, I don't know. I guess I
sometimes think of the usage of that word. I've heard
it said that it demonstrates a lack of intelligence when
there are people that swear all the time because they

(31:10):
can't find a different or better word to express what
they're trying to get across. My thing is just you
are setting the tone. And I think he did that
on purpose. I think he did that intentionally, and I
think that was the tone he wanted to set, and

(31:30):
that's how he wanted to represent himself.

Speaker 3 (31:32):
And I guess more power to him. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
It seems like his brand is almost like being defiant.
His brand is about I don't give a you know what, Marv.

Speaker 10 (31:50):
Yeah, I feel like the chip is when he shoulder,
like he has a big chip on his shoulder. And
even like Paulie was just saying, like he always comes
off like condescending on first take on other ESPN platforms,
it's like, you guys don't know. If you listen to
Mind the Game podcast with Lebron, it's those two are like,
oh good, finally somebody that I can talk to about
basketball that actually knows the game. So it kind of

(32:13):
he kind of came off that way too when people
are questioning his experience and things like.

Speaker 2 (32:17):
That, which is so interesting because part of what you're
doing as a broadcaster, it's broadcasting. It's not narrow casting.
You're you're trying to explain the game to the common
person so that they can learn it better and understand more.

Speaker 3 (32:38):
What is going on? I don't know. I mean, do
you guys have a big problem with it?

Speaker 2 (32:42):
You think that I mean, Kobe said he won the day,
he won the day. Do we think he won the
day because he was confident or because of the things
he said, or do we think he won the day
because he used the F word? Saying I don't give
a f and as a result, it went viral and
people are like, yeah.

Speaker 3 (33:02):
He doesn't give an F.

Speaker 7 (33:03):
Seaton, Well, I say this as a cursor, right, I
have a foul mouth.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
I don't do it.

Speaker 7 (33:09):
Like if I'm out around strangers, I don't really curse
all that much. But if I'm in an environment that
I'm comfortable, like certainly around here, I curse a lot,
you know, because I just I do I have. It's
not a great thing I noticed. I wish that I
didn't curse as much, but I do.

Speaker 3 (33:22):
Okay.

Speaker 7 (33:24):
I think if you think about JJ Reddick, the moments
that he's most known for in his media career, it's
that same type of energy or attitude. It's when he's
on first take and he's like, dude, you don't know
anything about basketball, okay, because I played and I did
all that, And he's telling people that they're a bunch
of idiots because they don't know what they're talking about.

(33:45):
I steven A, you don't even know what you're talking
about because you don't know basketball, and I know that
you know what I mean. He Those are his moments
that resonated the most over the last year.

Speaker 3 (33:54):
Or two.

Speaker 7 (33:55):
But however long his media career has been, so I
think that that attitude, it's not really surprising that he
had the same attitude in his first day as the
Lakers head coach. But you do think that once you
get to a job like the Lakers head coach, you
have a certain amount of confidence that you don't have

(34:18):
to worry about that stuff anymore.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Whatever happened to just kind of being classy, just being
professional and classy. What do you mean in terms of
the way, in terms of the way you conduct yourself
and handle yourself.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
I don't know. I mean it just that doesn't come
across as that to me. PAULI. Yeah, I agree.

Speaker 4 (34:35):
Again, the language party was unnecessary, and I'll obviously calculated
by him. But I do think a lot of fans
of any team, whether it's the Lakers or any team
that gets a new coach, wants to hear a coach
come in at the press conmerce with some bravado, yes,
some cockiness, like I'm gonna get us there, I'm that's
what you want to hear.

Speaker 3 (34:50):
You know.

Speaker 4 (34:50):
When Jim Harbaugh went to the Chargers, people are like, Hey,
this guy comes in, He's not I'm not here to
go eight, you know, nine to eight by first, He's
I'm here to win it all. And that's what you
want to hear.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
Smith got the Bears job, he's like number one goal
to beat the Packers. You, I mean, like people want
to hear that part of it.

Speaker 3 (35:05):
Marv.

Speaker 10 (35:06):
If you if you cover the Lakers like Kobe, when
you heard you know what JJ Reddick said, are you
super excited because you know, every single night I'm going
to get some type of quote from this guy.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Like just from a content point of.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
View, Yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay, I think listen, Kobe Price
does not come on the number one sports talk radio
show in the country, the Dan Patrick Show today, if
JJ Reddick doesn't say the F word twice yesterday. I
mean so on some level, what JJ Reddick did worked

(35:39):
and it worked out for Kobe Seaton.

Speaker 7 (35:44):
Some of those things that we're talking about, like you
have to come out with this right attitude and you
have to I get that A lot of that. Some
of it is super formulaic too, Like if you are
hired as the Ohio State head football coach, what is
the very first thing you have to say, We're gonna
beat Michigan on October fifteenth, or whenever they play right,
team up North yeah, or the team up North right,

(36:06):
whatever it is. You know what I mean, you have
to make some reference on how and I'm coming in
here with the one mission is to beat those guys whatever, right, Okay,
check the box. Now you did it. It used to
like mean something. Now it's just part of the formula.

Speaker 2 (36:18):
Can you imagine if the guy came in is like, yeah,
I just don't think it's as big a rivalry as
everybody else says.

Speaker 7 (36:24):
I'm here to get national championships if we beat that
other team, I don't really care.

Speaker 10 (36:28):
In Michigan.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Yeah, it's not that big a deal. People would lose
their mind. I'm curious. I don't know if there's a
poll question or we can just take some calls about
it eight seven seven three DP Show or hit me
up on social media at Ross Tucker, NFL at DP Show.
I am a little curious though, to see what the
public reaction is to JJ Reddick dropping a couple f bombs.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
Love it, hate it, don't care.

Speaker 2 (36:55):
Somewhere in the middle forty four minutes past the hour
here on the Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 1 (36:59):
Make sure that the live edition of the Dan Patrick
Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio WAP.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
Wrapping up our number two here on the Fastest three
hours in Radio, Ross Tucker filling in for Dan Patrick.

Speaker 3 (37:18):
It's so interesting, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (37:20):
The immediacy of social media being able to get reactions.

Speaker 3 (37:25):
We can also get some calls.

Speaker 2 (37:26):
At eight seven seven three DP show, Chuck Kelly says
one hundred percent agree with you on the swearing, no
place for it with an intelligent individual. Great analogy about
would you say in front of your kids or grandma?
Of course you wouldn't. But then Paula Duffy says, geez
at Ross Tuck NFL, no need to do a deep

(37:49):
dive into your feelings or other other's concerns about using
the F word by JJ Reddick. At his press conference,
Dustin Hall says authenticity has overtaken professionalism and it's making
less productive people. You know, the one thing you did
say yesterday that we didn't talk about. He's done with

(38:10):
the media stuff. So like our colleague here at Fox
Sports Radio, Doug Gottlieb is still doing the afternoon show
while he's a Division one head coach at Wisconsin Green Bay,
whereas JJ Reddick said he's done. He's I think he
used the word excommunicated from the podcast business.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
He's done doing that.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Which I think was obviously the right move right like that,
that would have been a really bad look, I think
if you're still doing your show. But he could have
done I mean, he could have made it a priority. Hey,
I still want to at least do one podcast.

Speaker 3 (38:47):
He did say something like.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
He owes it to the audience to have a conversation
about why he's making the decision he's making.

Speaker 3 (38:55):
PAULI.

Speaker 4 (38:55):
I found it as a producer very frustrating because I
wanted JJ Reddick to continue to do a podcast with
Lebron Weekly now more than ever. You know, it was
somewhat interesting before now it would be extremely awkward and
interesting and great and depending on the state of the Lakers,
and I know from his business standpoint, I bet JJ
Redick is like, Wow, this podcast that I think he

(39:16):
owns a piece of would be fantastic and much more downloaded.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
You know, on one hand, he's walking away from that stuff,
and I guess there's some risk there. But if at
any point he gets back into the media, the fact
that he was the Lakers head coach and adds that
to his playing experience makes his podcast infinitely more valuable

(39:42):
and interesting.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
I would think, don't you it does.

Speaker 4 (39:45):
He could always go right back to having a podcast
network and when he's done. But I think he thought
to himself, if we're losing, the obvious criticians will be, well,
you're not focused on the Lakers, You're focused on your
media career. At the same time, you know, he removed
that element from the criticism set.

Speaker 7 (40:03):
And I think part of the podcast was them like
breaking down games and stuff and like giving you know,
the strategy x's and o's and strategy and stuff, and
him and Lebron can't do that publicly anymore.

Speaker 10 (40:12):
Then if you guys ever watch or listen to it,
Marv I have, Yeah, I said it previously. It's very much, Oh,
finally somebody that knows basketball as much as I do.

Speaker 3 (40:22):
But it's like it's like, really, x's.

Speaker 10 (40:26):
And o's, Oh, for sure, you have to be a
basketball geek, Like I consider myself a basketball geek, and
even some of the terms because I didn't play basketball
at that level, Like what does that even mean?

Speaker 3 (40:35):
Right?

Speaker 2 (40:36):
So that's always a debate. I've had it with people
on the football side of things. Is there even a
market for that? Because I know there are people that
have shows that talk about three technique and B gap
and stuff, and I obviously know what that stuff is,
but my friends are diehard football fans.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
They have no idea what that stuff is.

Speaker 7 (40:56):
I think there is a real market for that because
I think one, there people who want to learn the
game at that level, and then two, I think even
more than that, there are people who love a shortcut
or a cheat sheet just sounding smart and if I
can listen to you talk about a double wamo block
in the A gap or something and sound like I

(41:16):
know now, I know what I'm talking about. When I
talk to my friends, I'll listen to that.

Speaker 3 (41:21):
It's just a wham block. I don't know I'm saying
they can't have a double wham though. That's actually a
pretty good idea.

Speaker 2 (41:29):
We gotta get Maddie Rose at the top, and I
gotta get back to soccer versus hockey.
