Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio Hour two.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
On this Thursday, Dan and the Dan Edge Dan Patrick Show.
First hour dominated by the Belocheck News going to Carolina.
Good idea, bad idea. That is the poll question for
the first hour. We'll recap that stat of the day
brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards
of the program. The sign calendars are sold out, but
we do have some other calendars left at Danpatrick dot
(00:28):
com eight seven seven to three DP show phone lines
have been packed all morning long. We'll try to get
to more phone calls coming up as well. Seatan, would
you update the poll results from our one Yeah, we
got up there.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Let's see Bill Belichick's tenure at North Carolina will be
widely successful or a complete disaster? Right now, sixty five
percent of the audience have that as a complete disaster.
We also asked is it widely successful, wildly successful or either.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Right now?
Speaker 3 (01:00):
This might be my bias voting, but it is one hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Percent wildly successful, right Yes, you can be wildly successful
but not widely successful. Yes, Todd, I would.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Say I had to choose between the two, that it
would be more likely to be a disaster, and I
don't want to be a negative guy about that. I
just I'm just trying to envision it.
Speaker 5 (01:22):
I got nobody sure we.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Were doing wildly or wild wild widely.
Speaker 6 (01:27):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
If I typed the run. It should be wild widely
widely widely successful.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Well, it shouldn't be. It can be wildly successful.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Well, I think the difference in the in the wording
would be widely would be like broadly successful, wildly would
be extremely successful. So I suppose either or either can
be used, but I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Well, locally it could be wildly successful, that doesn't mean
it will be widely successful around the country. Is how
I read that?
Speaker 7 (01:57):
Yes, Paul, I checked a couple websites, Dictionary websites. It's
widely successful. That's not correct. There is no widely successful.
It's wildly You could be widely known, like a lot
of reach, but not widely successful.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
All right, Well, I solve that. You got football coming
up tonight. You got the Niners and the Rams. The
Niners are favored by three. It's not last call, but
it's getting close to that. You got Seattle eight and five,
You got the Rams seven and six. You got the
Niners at six and seven. If you care about records
(02:37):
during the day and at night, Seattle is really good.
During the day, they're eight and three. The Rams are
six and three, and San Francisco not good at night
they're just three and six. But that's coming up tonight
and Amazon Prime between those two and you still like
the Rams are dangerous. I think the Niners. I it
(03:00):
just feels like it's not their year. It's just not
their year. And then you got the Deebo Samuel situation
where you know, all of a sudden, these wide receivers
are wide open, and now's the time when they want
to speak up that they want their touches. AJ Brown, hey,
we got to fix the passing game. Well, I understand
his frustration from the standpoint of, hey, you brought me in.
(03:21):
What am I here for? Well, you've changed your offense
because you brought in Saquon Barkley, and AJ Brown is
saying selfishly, hey, we've got to fix the passing game.
You're winning if you're losing, and AJ Brown speaks up, Okay,
now you have my attention. You just won. You're winning. Now,
he might say, we should have blown out Carolina, but
(03:46):
This isn't new with wide receivers. They they're always open
just to ask them. And I think the situation with Philadelphia,
this doesn't help anybody. And then Brandon Graham, who's a
veteran with the Eagles, comes out on his podcast and says, Hey,
these guys used to be friends and they're not anymore now.
(04:07):
All of a sudden, Philadelphia, it felt like, Hey, everything's fine,
everything's good. We got a really good team. Sh don't
tell anybody we're really good now. All of a sudden,
it's like same old Eagles. Here. Here is the Eagles
head coach Nick Siriani. Do we have him on the
drama in his locker room?
Speaker 8 (04:26):
Let's just talk about Jalen and Age. I see them
working to get better. I see them working to get
better together. I know there was assumptions of things, and
we get how that goes, but I can only go
on my personal experience of how these guys interact every
single day. And these guys are so locked in and
focused to getting better and getting better together, so they're
(04:46):
on the same page to go and accomplish the things
we want to accomplish. And I witness that every single day.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Okay, it feels like every time he comes up for air,
it's like, is everything coach clar uh, Okay, we're playing well.
Then all of a sudden you got aj Brown who
is not on the same page with his quarterback. And
then you have debo as well that he's not thrilled
with his touches or lack thereof, and he went to
(05:15):
social media. Here's the Niners head coach, Kyle Shanahan.
Speaker 9 (05:19):
Do you and I see each other every day and
talk about stuff every day. So my advice is not
let outside frustrate you because just answering those things isn't
going to help you in any way, usually only hurt you.
But as far as like well we deal with in
our relationships and our team.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
That's water under the bridge. Okay, it's just not the
Niners year, just not. But the Rams are one of
those teams, just like last year, that offense, that coach
yikes that that you know they're there. They will be
a tough out if they get in, more so than Seattle.
I think, uh, Seattle is probably a better balanced team
(05:58):
than the Rams. But the Rams got firepower. You got
that quarterback, those receivers, running back, that coach and They
would be a tough out if they happen to get in,
all right, age seven to seven three DP show email
address Dpadanpatrick dot com, former defensive back with the Ravens,
Dominic Foxworth, ESPN football analyst. He'll give us his thoughts
(06:19):
on the game tonight. Also, Bill Belichick going to college,
going back to college kind of his dad was at
North Carolina back in the fifties, so he's going to college,
going back to college, and that seems I think it's
a win for North Carolina already because we're talking about
North Carolina football. That's a win, and we'll continue. College
(06:41):
game Day will probably be there. The scenario where Nick
Saban sits down with Bill Belichick and talks about going
back to college, that's already gonna happen. Yes, Marv.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Absolutely, College game Day they will be Clemson at North Carolina.
That is absolutely a boocket. It's definitely going to be
the Week one.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Okay, all right, you're calling the shot there.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
We either Sunday night or Monday night Labor Day weekend.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
But next year they don't play Week one though, that's
that could be a problem. The schedule's already out. Okay,
what did they play Pauli. When does Clemson play North Carolina?
Speaker 7 (07:21):
That the conference schedule is made later, but I think
UNC's first game is August thirtieth hosting TCU, and they
got like Charlotte and Richmond coming up in September.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Not a lot of heavy hitters offense. Mike in Texas
leads us off second hour. Hi Mike, what's on your
mind today?
Speaker 10 (07:40):
What's on my mind is regarding the far straight Hand sec. Yeah,
and you said that the so basically I'm quoting from
Jason J. Willody from ESPM Milwaukee, and the information he
got is rolled. He wrote a story in two thousand
and two about how the O line when the O
lining were pissed because he gave the sack up and
(08:01):
he knew the playlist suposed to be called there's supposed
to be a run play So young have to get
Jason J. Wilodie's and Wildy and Tush and come in
and straighten the story out because you know they were
picked a far far just gave it up to straight hand.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah, we said he gave it up to and he
decided to boot leg. He did it on his own,
and you know their blocking scheme probably didn't factor in
that he was going to be running towards straight hand side,
So I don't know what you're talking about. We said
that he did this on his own. He said, I
decided to boot the play. Why would you run towards
(08:38):
Michael Strahan. Game's over. You're running towards him? Why nothing
to gain? Game is over. He went over there and
gift rap a sack. That's all. So maybe his offensive
Lindman didn't know, and it certainly looked like they didn't
know because Straighthand came right through. So I'm not sure
(09:01):
what we're supposed to be getting out of, you know,
Wisconsin here, Josh and san Antonio, Hi, Josh, what's on
your mind?
Speaker 11 (09:10):
Morning?
Speaker 6 (09:10):
DP. Just to chime in on the pole, I think
the Belichick and see thing is it's genius. It's genius.
I think we're going to see more of this. More
of the coaches that you know, get bounced from the NFL.
They're going to have the experience the NAL and the
recruiting thing is not a big deal. Belichick managed a
two hundred million dollar NFL talarycap. We're talking we're talking
(09:31):
in Il at carolinea like twenty million dollars. That's nothing.
It's no big deal. The season is shorter, their expectations
are probably not to win a national title. But this
is a genius move by Belichick and then kind of
a good way to stick it to the NFL. I
guess and say, look, I'm going to go over here
and add value to the NFL in other ways.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
But yeah, I mean, look, I am I surprised at it. Yes,
I was surprised because I thought Bill would want to
go back coaching other team. You give him Jacksonville, he
gets to take over the team, and then maybe he
gets the team in the playoffs and then he gets
the all time victory record. But there's a no, it's
(10:12):
a different purpose here. He wants his son to follow
in his footsteps at Carolina. So maybe after three years,
Steven Belichick takes over and Bill stays for two years
as a consultant. But if you have money, he'll figure
out the transfer portal. That's just called free agency. Nil,
that's no salary cap. He can go out get quarterbacks.
(10:37):
It's not like, hey, what's our draft order in the
ACC before we can go out and get a quarterback.
He didn't have to worry about any of those things,
and then you got, hey, what about his friend Nick
Saban didn't want to coach anymore? Well, Saban didn't want
this new football. He didn't want new college football, the rules,
everything that goes along with it. He didn't want to
(10:57):
deal with that. Well, Belichick is going into it saying
the pro game and the NFL game are basically the same.
So always doing is saying free agency is nil transfer portal.
That's you know, that's the same thing free agency. That's
what this is. So if you're running a budget in
(11:19):
the with the Patriots, you're going to run a budget
in college. Like these are things that to me, I
don't worry about that relatability. I don't know. These kids
are going to want to know how much we get
paid and can that guy get me to the NFL?
So Bill should be able to take care of Hey,
(11:40):
I can help you get to the NFL, and the
collective is going to help you. I just had this
last hour and where I had a source say that
A key aspect to watch is the school's financial commitment overall,
in addition to staffing. It will become clear that the
school is increasing it's NIL commitment more than than five
(12:00):
hundred percent. I don't know what they committed to, but
if you're committing five hundred percent, it seems like a
lot unless you didn't really commit a lot, So then
five hundred percent is maybe not as much as you think.
It is still five hundred percent. But my source goes
on to say the following North Carolina is comfortable taking
(12:24):
these steps as part of a broader strategy to build Slash,
retro fit itself to be ready as a perspective sec
or Big ten member so on and off the field,
a safe logical bet, according to my source, David in
South Arkansas, Hi, David, what's on your mind?
Speaker 12 (12:47):
Good morning, gentleman, five ten and very relaxing one ninety
five this morning.
Speaker 11 (12:54):
I got a.
Speaker 12 (12:55):
Media question for you, since y'all been in the.
Speaker 13 (12:57):
Media for so loans is very different.
Speaker 12 (13:00):
It's between the way like a local college media North
Carolina will deal with Belichick as opposed to say, a
national media dealt with Belichick at the NFL. Is there
a difference there where he'd be able to handle that difference?
Just a question, thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
All right, Yes, he will be treated differently locally, certainly
in a college market. Availability will be different in the
college ranks as well. I don't know if you'll do
a coaches show. We've suggested if you can stay on
Pat McAfee and the Manning Cast do that as well.
Great exposure there, but I think usually your local media
(13:41):
plays nice with the college football coach or college basketball coach.
Troy in Texas, Hi, Troy, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 14 (13:51):
Yeah, good morning, six three to twenty five. I would
just the one caller that said that he's going not
going to be successful in North Carolina. If you look
at the last ten national championships, the best quarterback in
college was maybe on two of them, Joe Burrow and
(14:11):
Trevor Lawrence at that time. But I just feel like
college is changing, like you've already said, and everybody's forgetting that.
So if it's changing like the pros, you get a
pro coach that's dealt with that. And all the coaches
that have left college are the ones that don't like
the other nil like Nick Saban and all of them,
(14:35):
and they didn't do well in the Pro. So you
know that's my take on it.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Well, the fact that Belichick said on McAfee that the
NFL and college are really similar now because the money
that's there that you're paying them. There is name, image
and likeness, and there is the transfer portal, and the
transfer portal is college's name for free agency. Imagine you
don't have to deal with the draft, you don't have
(15:00):
a salary cap that you're worried about. Maybe you bring
in a couple of quarterbacks. You're not waiting for your
draft order to say, who are we going to We
got to take Mac Jones. Well, if you didn't have
to take Mac Jones and you got somebody a little
further up on the totem pole, then maybe you get
a better quarterback there. That's what everybody is worried about.
(15:24):
Is Bill going to relate to these players? I think
he will, But that's not the biggest concern I would have.
It's when can he do it? Like how quickly does
this turn around? The over under for wins right now
is six and a half, so expectations are Bull eligible
(15:45):
kind of like what they were with Mac Brown this year?
Bull eligible the Fenway Bull. They're playing Connecticut. I think
Bill would aspire to something a little better than that.
But would I take the over?
Speaker 11 (15:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Probably seven eight wins, maybe all goes well, maybe nine.
All right, we'll take a break. Dominic Foxworth will join
us former defensive back with the ravens Now and analysts
for the Mothership. His thoughts on this, plus the game tonight,
the Rams at the forty nine ers, and how big
of a problem is it with the Eagles when the
(16:21):
quarterback and the wide receiver aren't on the same page
back after this.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
More phone calls coming up eight seven to seven three
DP show. People are sending in comparisons. Hey, what about
Bill Callahan, he was going to take the West Coast
offense to Nebraska. How about Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame.
How about HERM Edwards at Arizona State? How about Love
Smith at Illinois. I don't know if I could compare
(16:58):
those coaches with Bill Bai. Okay, we're trying to make
an argument. That's not where I would go, Yes, Seaton,
all of those coaches.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Do have one thing in common that Bill Belichick does not.
It was all pre nil, pre transfer portal pre it
was the the BC and like ad of football, and
he is.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Those guys are all BC. Yes, Todd, Yeah, Paul.
Speaker 5 (17:30):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 7 (17:31):
Anyone who likes Stuart Mandel saying Bill Belichick is coming
down to college football. He's not coming down to college
football nineteen eighty eight or even even two thousand and
eight or twenty fifteen. It's a professional sport on college campuses.
You're taking a guy he's uniquely qualified because he's not
just coached. He was the general manager of an NFL
team at the same time. Successfully. Yeah, Nick Saban left,
(17:55):
like we were saying, because the playing field changed. The
playing field changed the door for Bill to do this.
He wouldn't have done it four years ago.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
But Bill is doing the same thing they're doing in college.
He did that in the NFL free agency. Is that's
the transfer portal and the money that's attached to this,
that's you know, you're in il. Dominic Foxworth the ESPN
writer commentator for Anscape in season football podcast The Dominic
Foxworth Show, and that's three times a week also on
(18:26):
Get Up and a contributor to ESPN. Your reaction when
you heard the Bill was actually taking the Carolina job.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
Was Yeah, I mean I think it.
Speaker 15 (18:36):
The first thing that it drove home was the NFL
didn't really want him, and that's a shocking thing. I
understand why people may not want to give up the power.
And I read in Steth Wikerson's piece this morning about
how Bill obviously said he was flexible.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
But the thing about that is.
Speaker 15 (18:51):
Even if he were flexible, he's still Bill Belichick, and
I feel like you drop him in any situation, it
changes the alchemy in the room. And while he said
he'd be willing to work with existing gms, he's still
Bill Belichick, and it's like having a tiger that you've trained.
He's like, you still know at some point he's gonna
be breathing over your shoulder and something's gonna happen. I
(19:13):
can't imagine that anyone who listened to him say, oh yeah,
I like your GM.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
It's fine. Oh no, the president of operations, he's good
with me.
Speaker 15 (19:22):
No one felt fully comfortable while bringing that tiger into
their building.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
What's the downside for Carolina?
Speaker 5 (19:29):
Yeah, a downside for Carolina.
Speaker 15 (19:30):
It sounds like the four hundred page of manifesto that
about how he's going to control the whole organization, and
I think the downside is the risk of giving yourself
over to someone who has not proven that they can
do it at this level.
Speaker 5 (19:43):
And I understand.
Speaker 15 (19:43):
I heard you guys coming in about how it is
professional on this level.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
You're right.
Speaker 15 (19:48):
I think the biggest vote of confidence I would have
for Bill Belichick is he's just really smart.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
And really good and works really hard.
Speaker 15 (19:54):
And I think that most of the time we like
to find all these other characteristics for why people are
successful in different industries, and that's normally what it comes
down to. Are you smart, are you willing to work hard,
and you are committed to this. I think Bill Belichick is,
and he'll figure out all the other stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Yeah, Carolina already won. We're talking Carolina Football. They already won.
Speaker 5 (20:14):
Yeah. I mean, I think you're right. It makes them
relevantly immediately.
Speaker 15 (20:17):
It feels a little bit like the Deon Sanders effect
in Colorado, where they went from being an irrelevant franchise
or irrelevant kind of program to one that top people
are going to consider and that we and the general
public are going to care about. Week one, We're going
to care what the hell's going on in Carolina in
a way that we haven't in a long time.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
I don't know how important the personality of your head
coach was when you played, because this is being brought
back with Bill Belichick. Is he relatable to somebody eighteen
through twenty two years of age? And I said, well,
I don't know. Is it about your personality or how
you like? Can you coach? Can you get me ready
for the pros? How much money? I mean, these are
(20:57):
the questions that these kids are asking nowadays. So back
to my original question, how important was the personality of
your coach?
Speaker 5 (21:04):
Yeah, I mean I.
Speaker 15 (21:05):
Think mine was different, but now times are very different.
I think the obvious challenges of it are obvious, so
I don't think we need to go to that. But
I think if you want to look at the positive
side of it is it's gonna be a self selecting process.
Like no one is going to be surprised a boy
who Bill Belichick is. So the type of players that
want to play for a coach like Bill Belichick, they're
(21:25):
going to show up there at Chapel Hill. And the
guys who will be put off by Bill Belichick like
he's not gonna change no matter what we think, and
we are imagining him dancing in the back like Brian
Kelly dancing on spinning flat four platforms to recruit coaches,
I mean, excuse me, to recruit kids.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Hell no, that's not Bill Belichick. That's not who he's
ever going to be.
Speaker 15 (21:43):
And I think that's a good thing because we know
who he is, and the players that show up there
are going to be players that want to be coached
the same way Tom Brady was coached, that want to
be treated the way.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
That they're going to be treated.
Speaker 15 (21:54):
And I imagine he's going to have a separate staff
to go out and smooth the kids and.
Speaker 5 (21:58):
Figure out money.
Speaker 15 (21:58):
I don't think Bill Belichick is gonna have a situation
where players are gonna walk into this office after a
good game and say, my nil needs to go up
while I'm going elsewhere.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
Those guys aren't gonna go to Chapel Hill.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
The team that loses tonight between the Rams and Niners done.
Speaker 15 (22:15):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, I think the Rams
are one of the scarier teams. The Niners have kind
of I think the wind they had a good week
last week, but I think the windows kind of closed
on this particular rum run. So I think the question
is can the Rams pull off this win, because we
saw what they did last week. They have an offense
that's so impressive, and the defense with Jared Vers and
some young pass rushers that I think can make big
(22:36):
plays that could give a scare to the top two
teams or excuse me, the top three. I guess if
you put Green Bay in there, the top four teams
in the NFC. I don't see the Rams as a
real Super Bowl contender, but they can knock somebody off
in the first or second round and really piss off
some fan base.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Matthew Stafford has had this renaissance. Like to me, there'd
be no reason to want to retire if I got
Sean McVay and I got Cooper and I got Nikua.
I kind of like, you know, as long as they
have a good offensive line, I kind of like it. LA.
I mean, I think it's pretty good.
Speaker 6 (23:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 15 (23:10):
And Williams in the backfield, I think his body holding
up is the big question. His arm is still as
incredible as it's ever been, and I think that's a reminder.
Speaker 5 (23:20):
As much as.
Speaker 15 (23:20):
We want to spend an eye as like an analyst
who played, I want to show all my knowledge by
getting deep into how important these schematic adjustments are, and
how important the D line is and O line and
coverages and disguise.
Speaker 5 (23:35):
You got a good ass coach and you got a
great quarterback.
Speaker 15 (23:38):
You're never too far away. Like we remember after they
won a Super Bowl, we're like, they're done. Maybe McVeigh
should go to the media. They find a good player
in the draft in Nakua and they're right back near
the top. With some adjustments on defense, they could be
a competitor in NFC real soon.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
The Eagles with the infighting that you're winning, But then
you have h J. Brent speak up about we kind
of have to fix the passing game here I'm paraphrasing here,
but you covered diva wide receivers. We still kind of
allow them to be divas. Why so all right?
Speaker 15 (24:15):
I think my first reaction was much like yours, and
I've since tried my best to view it from a
different perspective because that's not the AJ Brown I've heard about.
Speaker 5 (24:23):
You remember when Saquon was signed.
Speaker 15 (24:24):
There AJ's first comments where we're gonna make sure Saquon
gets his And if you watch the games, AJ Brown
is not a typical diva wide receiver. He's blocking the
hell out of people like he's a big physical guy.
He's playing hard and fixing the passing game. To me,
if I'm giving it the most charitable reading, it's aj
Brown understanding what we all understand is that Jalen Hurts
(24:46):
is the limiting factor on this offense, and they're not
going to be able to steamroll everybody through the playoffs.
There's gonna come a time where they're going to have
to outscore somebody. They're going to have to attack down
the field. So while I do agree that the wires,
he probably thinks the answer to every problem is thrown
me the damn ball. I think in this case he
might be right that the real answer to the problem
(25:07):
is their passing game is a little bit rudimentary compared
to some of the other teams that they're gonna match
up against.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
But we've said this about Jalen Hurts. He doesn't feel
like he's a finished product when he's in the pocket.
He's a good quarterback, he makes plays. I just think
if the game comes down to his passing, than Philadelphia
is in trouble.
Speaker 15 (25:29):
I think so in Philadelphia's offense is pretty simple, and
part because they're more talented everyone else. They're going to
run the ball until you compromise yourself in order to
stop it. Then Jalen is going to run the ball
on the edge until you compromise yourself to stop that.
And then they want to attack downfield. And I think
other teams that are built like that they do it
the other way. I think in some games we go
into with the Lions were very similar to them. The
(25:51):
Lions will attack downfield first, and I think that's what
aj Brown wants and to have a more sophisticated passing
offense because some games they're going to need it. But yeah,
you're not going to change who Jalen Hurts is. Like,
this is who he is.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Dominique Foxworth, ESPN writer commentator, you know this Brett Farv
Mark Gastone play is resurfaced now with the thirty for
thirty coming out. Would you have a problem though, Like, well,
let me just ask you your reaction when you saw
gas Too approaching Brett Farv and saying I want my shack,
(26:24):
I want my shack back.
Speaker 15 (26:26):
I imagine my reaction was like everyone else's was like I
cringe a little bit, and it was uncomfortable, But I
also recognize that for athletes like you put so much
into it, like it becomes the peak of your life
at such a young age. And it wasn't for me
in part because I wasn't that great of an athlete.
But I can't imagine if I was as great as
Mark Gastineau and that was what I was known for.
(26:47):
You feel like there's some integrity to the things that
you accomplished.
Speaker 5 (26:50):
Like I get while he's upset, and I get why.
Speaker 15 (26:53):
You want to hold onto that, and you feel like
your record, like I completely understand it.
Speaker 5 (26:58):
It's something that I don't think I would ever do.
But I don't feel say.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Jerry Rice, Let's say Jerry Rice is opposite you, Jerry
Rice needs six more yards to set the single season record.
How would you feel I would so.
Speaker 15 (27:14):
Jerry Rice was at the Broncos my rookie year, and
he was one of my favorite players growing up. My
brother and I looked up to Jerry Rice and Barry Sanders,
and he was in our camp in training camp, and
my first one on one was against Jerry Rice my idol,
and I pushed his ass out.
Speaker 5 (27:28):
Of bounds like I was I was fighting for my life.
Speaker 15 (27:32):
And I took that forty year old man and I
put my hands on him, and so I imagine that
I would have been the same way. I think there's
a different understanding. When you're Brett Farvre, you're in a
different fraternity. When you're Brett Farv and you're Jerry Rice
and you're Michael straight Hut, Michael Strahan, they're in a
different fraternity.
Speaker 5 (27:48):
Guys like me. Hell no, you can't have nothing from
what I nothing from. I'm not giving you a yard.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
Good to talk to you as always, Dominique, thank you,
Thank you there and so do make Foxworth ESPN writer
The Dominic Foxworth Show. It's a in season football podcast
three times a week, also on Get Up as well.
A couple of phone calls sewn in Michigan. Hi, Sean,
what do you have for me? Well, actually, this is
(28:16):
Mark Gastino and.
Speaker 14 (28:20):
Has anybody seen my staff?
Speaker 2 (28:22):
No? No, no, no, I don't want to make fun
of him. I don't want to make fun of him.
I think he's in a tough situation okay, physically maybe
mentally easy target right now. I only do that. Uh,
Marty in Huntington Beach, Hey, Marty, Hey, Dan, how you.
Speaker 16 (28:43):
Doing with Belichick going down to the college ranks.
Speaker 11 (28:47):
I'm moyer, m we haven't heard Pete Carroll's name mentioned,
or maybe we haven't.
Speaker 17 (28:51):
I just haven't heard it.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
I have always wondered, you know, and he's on campus
at USC, so it's like we're going to plays Lincoln
Riley with Pete Carroll. I don't know if Pete. I
feel like Pete would still coach. He always seemed like
he was ten years younger than he really was age wise.
He's seventy three. I don't know if that's what Pete
(29:16):
wants to do. I'd love to have him back as
a coach, but I don't know if he's He's gotten
anybody you know calling him. Todd called for Pete Carroll.
Why not if he wants to join us? Andrew in Florida, Hi, Andrew,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 11 (29:35):
Hey?
Speaker 6 (29:35):
Dan?
Speaker 17 (29:37):
Five nine, still two twenty five hockey player? Just maybe
makes me think of Charlie Weis's going from New England
to Notre Dame. I'm not comparing the coaches. I'm preparing
the situation using his three Super Bowl rings to recruit
kids like Jimmy Class and eventually Notre Dame's program kind
of you know, went down with tubes. How do you
(30:01):
see that compared to this situation? And I have one
quick question.
Speaker 10 (30:05):
Who is the.
Speaker 17 (30:05):
Voice of the history of the person that says, oh
my god, I'm play today.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
I don't know who says that, Marvin, do you know
who that voice is? Oh my god, I do not. Okay,
I do not know that. I've said many times there
are assistant coaches who weren't meant to be head coaches.
I didn't think Charlie Weiss was head coach or Romeo Cornell.
They were successful with the Patriots. There are coordinators who
(30:31):
are meant to be coordinators, So saying, oh, is this
like Belichick? No, it's not like Belichick. They're on the
same staff, but no, it's not the same. Yes, marm
and Weiss. At Notre Dame, the expectations were completely different.
The expectations were national championship or bus At North Carolina,
if they get to the ACEC Championship game, that's a
(30:52):
great victory for that program. Yes, if they get ten wins,
that is monstrous. They might have a statue you five
years they win ten games instead of you know, squeaking
into the Fenway Bowl with six wins or whatever they
had seven wins they had this year. All right, we'll
take a break. More on Belichick going to Carolina after this.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Packers Seahawks coming up Sunday night, Peacock NBC. Also Football
Tonight on Amazon. It'll be to the Niners against the Rams. Oh,
get ready for it. Today two pm Eastern, Bill Belichick
gets in front of the media North Carolina, the new
(31:45):
and improved Bill Belichick. Oh, yes, that personality that's been
on display on the Manning cast Pat McAfee's show. He's
gonna be dynamic. Who what's he gonna wear? What's he
gonna say?
Speaker 7 (31:59):
Yes, poy so hope that the first question is like
Skippy biddle Bottom from the local newspaper, the campus newspaper. Bid, Yeah,
little ski good bittle Bottom gets to ask the first
question of Belichick.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Uh, coach, Yes, Martin powder blue tie?
Speaker 6 (32:16):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (32:16):
Does he have a tie on? Today? Let's bring in
Mark Packer. He's been covering the ACC a long time.
See these are the questions that we have, Mark, What
do you think Belichick with a tie on campus today?
Speaker 18 (32:28):
I think at North Carolina he starts with the tie,
but maybe by the end we go with the hoodie. Right,
we just do the cutoff Argyll hoodie and one word
answers and down the red and listen, he's gotta go
get some players, Dan. I mean, this is a cool
story and he's the all time greatest coach, but man,
you better get some players if you expect to win.
That's true, whether it's high school, college or pro.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
All right, let's go back a couple of weeks ago
when you first heard this was a possibility, and you
said what.
Speaker 19 (32:57):
I said, You gotta be crazy, right, what is he thinking?
I mean, is he that board?
Speaker 18 (33:02):
I mean, you mean you got you got a coach
in college football, given everything is accomplished, and he's that
close to Don Shulis, Mark, and you know, maybe somebody
will wake up and say, guess what, let's give him
a gig.
Speaker 19 (33:12):
And listen, I'm in Charlotte, North Carolina. You think we
could use a coach.
Speaker 18 (33:16):
We've seen bad football from the NFL perspective for god
knows how long, but nobody in the right mind really
thought this could happen. But it is an amazing story
and to see how this whole thing unfolds is gonna
be fascinated.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
I feel like Carolina has already won. Is that fair
to say? Yeah? I mean the fact you're on my
show today, we're talking Carolina football and put.
Speaker 19 (33:39):
It in perspective. And again we obviously cover the a SEC,
but cover college sports.
Speaker 18 (33:45):
Last night, the Southeastern Conference, which is the best conference
in college football, in the Big Ten, which is number two,
could arguably be number one this year.
Speaker 19 (33:53):
They announced their.
Speaker 18 (33:53):
Twenty twenty five college football schedules last night. Nobody cared,
you know why, because everybody was talking about the AC
North Carolina and Bill Belichick. So in some respects, after
just twenty four hours, you've already seen the impact he
can have. Now, like I said, we'll have the press
conference today, that'll be great, but at some point in time,
North Carolina expects to win yesterday. And this is a
(34:15):
program that's kind of been a sleeping giant. We've been
talking about that for decades. Now, he's got to.
Speaker 19 (34:19):
Go prove it.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
What's the downside?
Speaker 11 (34:22):
Now?
Speaker 18 (34:22):
The downside is that North Caline pushes all their chips in.
There's been a misalignment from the board of trustees, the
athletic director that's got to get on the same page.
The guy's seventy two. He sits here and says, hey,
I got all the answers. I pull a Charlie Weiss
who said, listen, I got all the schematic advantages. Also,
he goes out and realizes, you know what team coming
(34:44):
through the other tunnel's got better players in a matter
how many Super Bowls I can talk about, they wear
my ass out, and that's the worst thing that can happen. Well,
guess what you expect to win asap and you fall
flat on your face.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
But if he gets nine or ten wins, he's a savior,
isn't he.
Speaker 19 (35:02):
Well, I think that's been the problem.
Speaker 6 (35:04):
Dan.
Speaker 18 (35:04):
North Carolina has been able to get to that number.
And I know Mac around this year got the six.
Speaker 19 (35:09):
But they've been on the doorstep multiple times.
Speaker 18 (35:12):
They've been to two ACC Championship games, lost to Clemson
in both of them. Max's first run, he had a
great team. He left North Carolina the first time as
a top ten team. The problem was was god by
the named of Bobby Baalden at Florida State. That was
just that good. So North Carolina has always produced players.
You go back through history, they always put guys into
the National Football League. I think their expectations are, Hey,
(35:33):
we haven't won an AEC championship since nineteen eighty when
a got by the name of Lawrence Taylor was a linebacker.
Speaker 19 (35:39):
Why not.
Speaker 18 (35:40):
Now let's put all chips in. Got this whole name
and image and likeness thing. We got the coach, Let's
let it rip and see where it goes. I expect
him to figure that. Hey, go into bowls a piece
of ky. Listen here in the ACC, we saw SMU
joined the league for the first time. Tell the league
to keep all their TV money. They win eleven games
in the a SEC Championship game, and now they're college
football Playoff.
Speaker 19 (36:01):
Why can't that happen at North Carolina?
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Okay, the over under, according to Vegas is six and
a half wins. You over or take the.
Speaker 18 (36:08):
Over, and I'll tell you why again. I just looked
at their schedule last night. Next year in the ACC,
they don't see Miami, they don't see Louisville, they don't
see SMU, they don't see Virginia Tech. Say whatever you
want about Florida State, they won't be too intent. They
miss all those teams. They get Clemson and they go
to the rival NC State. They've lost four straight non
conference scheduled TCU as their opener. I would again, I'm
(36:31):
not a betting man, but I think they obliterate six
and a half.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
Good to talk to you, Mark, you got something to
talk about.
Speaker 18 (36:38):
Certainly, Listen, the biggest winner of all this was the
ACC Network in the conference and hopefully Bill Belichick at
North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Thank you, Mark, you got it. That's Mark Packer, ACC
network host. Yeah, there are a lot of winners in this.
Stuart Mandel, the athletic, he's not a believer. He'll join
us coming up next hour. Pretty rough on Belichick. Rob
in Boca, Hey Rob, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 6 (37:03):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (37:03):
Good morning guys.
Speaker 11 (37:05):
Five nine and too much. Before Packer mentioned that I
was going to tee you up with this, uh, with
this one for you? Do you think that Belichick will
bring on his favorite player of all time to the
staff Lawrence Taylor.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
No, I don't think that'll happen. No, I don't. I
wouldn't encourage that. Maybe you bring him out celebrating him
at a game. But no, you won't be doing that.
Let's see Dave in Virginia. Hi, Dave, what's on your
mind today?
Speaker 14 (37:37):
Hey? Good morning?
Speaker 17 (37:39):
Damn question for you?
Speaker 13 (37:45):
Or actually it's a comment more of the question. Everybody's
talking like Belichick's been living in a vacuum and has
no concept of what is going on in college. Yeah,
I'm from Seattle originally I fall Seattle Sports. It sounds
like he's spent a lot time with the University of
Washington with his son this year. He was sitting and meetings.
He probably talked to a lot of the head coach,
(38:06):
Jet Fish and a lot of the other people on
the staff about Nil about the transfer portal. He's he's
coming into this with a pretty good understanding of how
to do this, is my belief. In that four hundred
page manifesto, He's probably a lot of things that Washington
did right, and a lot of things Washington did raw
are part of that. So I really think that he's
(38:27):
prepared for this and he knows what he's getting himself into.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
Yeah, I do too. He's always overly prepared always, Why
would this be any different. He has more to lose now, like,
here's the greatest coach all Let's see if you can
do it in college. Oh, I told you you couldn't
deal with transfer, portal or nil. But he's going in
embracing what Nick Sabant wanted to run from. He don't
(38:53):
want to deal with that. Jay Wright at Villanova basketball,
I don't want to deal with this. Belichick is running
to it. They ran away from it. There's a big
difference in that. Nea Maya in California, Hi Neamiah.
Speaker 16 (39:09):
Hi Dan five seven, one sixty. I had a suggestion
about your removing the three point line. Yeah, I wanted
to make a suggestion. How about we do no three
pointers for the first three quarters of the game, so
every three pointer will count as a two pointer, and
then come the fourth quarter, your three pointers are good
(39:30):
to go.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
I'm open for any suggestions here. This is what i
would love to see. So we have these new courts,
they're all lit up. What if you had the three
point line and then all of a sudden it doesn't
light up until the fourth quarter, or you get twenty
five to three point attempts. I was watching the Knicks
against the Hawks last night. Watch most of the game.
(39:55):
There are times when there is unbelievable basketball athleticism, but
it always ultimately comes down to taking three point shots,
that's all. I'd like to see more movement with it.
And it's not back to the you know, the eighties
or nineties when it's sumo wrestler down on the block.
But I'd like to see kind of basketball, you know,
(40:19):
maybe more than just hey, shoot a three, go down
the other and shoot a three.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
Yeah, Mark, my head was going to explode. Instead of
pump faking and going in, they would pump fake then
go to the side of bench. Yeah, and still shoot
a three pointer.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Yeah Yeah. That's here to stay, here to stay. But
while I'm still alive, I'll keep fighting the good fight.
And this coming from a great shooter. Stuart Mandel from
The Athletic does not mince words. He thinks this is
going to be ugly with Bill Belichick,
