Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's our two on this Tuesday. Come on in stay
a while, spend a good portion of the first hour
paying tribute to a friend of the show, Bill Walton,
passing away yesterday at the age of seventy one, and
feel good about the memories of Bill. I was feeling
sorry for myself yesterday afternoon when I got word that

(00:25):
Bill had passed away, and then I was like, snap
out of it. Bill would be like, so disappointed in you, Dan, Yes,
think of the positives. Put a smile on your face.
He was unique. There aren't many of those people, and
he was a treasure. Really enjoyed our friendship and the

(00:46):
numerous times that he came on this program. And I
go back to the early two thousands when Bill would
come on and really no agenda, and he would talk
for eight to twelve minutes, straight stream of consciousness, and
then I would run out of time and I'd say,
all right, Bill, talk to you later, and then he'd
hang up, and then he would call back next week.

(01:08):
There he would be another eight to twelve minutes. Occasionally
I'd get two questions in, but that's just who he
was all right eight seven to seven three d P
Show operator Tyler is sitting by taking your phone calls.
Best and worst of the weekend. Since we weren't here yesterday.
What you liked you didn't like? Spend some time talking
about the Celtics with the sweep, and now they await

(01:28):
the winner of the Timberwolves and the Mavericks. The Mavericks
game for tonight in Dallas. Reggie Miller will join us.
He's on the call with that game. He'll join us
in about twenty minutes from now. But the Celtics sweep.
Jalen Brown is the Eastern Conference MVP stars up to
one in the Oilers, the Rangers up to one on
the Panthers. Pull question from our one seaton and what

(01:49):
are we going to go with an hour two.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Hour one Dan, we had up there, which would you
rather get swept or lose? At the buzzer in game seven?
Right now we have fifty seven percent of the audience
would rather lose it the buzzer.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, I want to at least be in it to
win it instead of there was no chance whatsoever. By
the way, the Timberwolves are getting two tonight in Dallas.
I would not be surprised if Minnesota won this game.
The over unders according to DraftKings Anthony Edwards twenty six
and a half, Luca thirty and a half, Kyrie twenty

(02:24):
three and a half. And in case you're wondering about
Karl Anthony Towns, he's over under is nineteen and a half. Now,
see is this feels like a sucker back because he
scored sixteen fifteen, fourteen so far in the first three games,
and you're thinking, wow, he's not going to get nineteen
and a half. He eventually has to hit some of

(02:45):
these shots, right right. I think he's a good shooter,
but he's been horrible from three point range. But those
are the over unders coming up tonight. And speaking of
Luca and Kyrie, they've been getting you know, there's sixty
points a night or close to it, and that's such

(03:05):
an advantage that you can count on that Minnesota. Minnesota
doesn't have the consistent scores. Karl Anthony town should be
a twenty point at least twenty point a night's score,
and then you throw in Anthony Edwards, who should give
you around twenty seven. So now you can kind of
counterbalance what you're getting with Dallas's players, and then you
hope your role players can out role player there, guys,

(03:28):
and that hasn't been the case. But Dallas is winning
down the stretch. You know, Minnesota just like Indiana, blowing
leads in the fourth quarter and Dallas is taking advantage
of it. We say good morning. If you're watching on Peacock,
thank you for downloading the app and our radio affiliates
around the country. Back to Luca and Kyrie, there's been

(03:48):
a little bit more chatter here. Stan Van Gundy said
that they might be the best backcourt tandem most talented.
I'm not sure the exact words, but if you could
get that the wording, if it's most talented are best scorers,
and then we could have a discussion on that. Here's
Kyrie ask about the greatest backcourt ever.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
They just take in, you know, the accolades.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
When people talk about you and lucas possibly the greatest
backcourt in NBA history.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
Thank you who said that. It's a lot to talk
about that.

Speaker 5 (04:16):
It's a lot of talk that you and Luca be
the you know, greatest backcourt in the NBA history.

Speaker 6 (04:20):
I mean, it doesn't mean anything if we don't win
a ring, together, you know. And I say that very
responsibly too, you know, not saying that we aren't great now,
but there are other backcourts that are more deserving right
now for that recognition. And I think once we put
a good run together and we could look back on
and reflect on it, then that'll be our time.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Okay. I mean that's a responsible, you know response there
being grown up with that because there have been a
lot of backcourts in NBA history. But I don't know,
are we calling them the most talented, the best scoring?

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Do weo?

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Do we have the exact wording? I think stan Van
Gunn you may have started this on the broadcast.

Speaker 7 (05:01):
Here's one that I found from stan Van Gundy. He
was talking about Minnesota's defense, trying to stop them. He said,
quote trying to slow down arguably the best offensive back
court in the history of the NBA and Luca and
Kyriegi Beller goes, whoa so best offensive back court?

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Okay, yeah, See I'm seeing another quote from him on
Sports Illustrated that says it's the most talented backcourt in
the history of the NBA.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
See that one's tricky, that that's the old Aaron Rodgers.
He's the most talented quarterback in NFL history. Yeah, okay,
Kyrie is one of the most talented players in NBA history. True.
But best scoring backcourt, best offensive backcourt.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
All right.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
You know the way they can score is what's going
to separate them because the game has changed. You know,
Luca Is can beat you from three and then he
can post up. He can hit little floaters. Kay, we
can beat you off the dribble. He can also hit
a big you know, shot from three point range. They
can get to the hoop and they can shoot. The
three players didn't have that. You know, before we had

(06:10):
the three point shot. You know, guys were it in
mid range jumpers or you know, trying to get to
the hoop getting found. It's different to try to be
able to do that now Jordan and Pippen. Are they
a backcourt? No, because Mike was the shooting guard, Scotty
was the three. Is that what we're gonna say. So

(06:31):
they weren't a backcourt, so we can't include them. Earl
Monroe and Wald Frazier, they come to mind. They were wonderful.
You know, Earl was more of a score than Walt was.
But they were a great backcourt when they played for
the Knicks. Yes, Mars, what about Stephan Clay? Stephan Clay
if you're talking offensively now, the different ways that Luca

(06:55):
and Kyrie can score, and and you know Curry and
Clay is different, I would still say Dallas is more
talented in their abilities to be able to score differently.
Clay is an unbelievable jump shooter, unbelievable great, one of
the five greatest shooters of all time probably, but he

(07:16):
needs help. Steph can get his shot. Kyrie can get
a shot, so can Lucas. So I think it kind
of comes down to do you need help getting your
shot or can you get your shot? That's the talent
part of this. And I'll talk to Reggie about this
because I'm sure their backcourts were leaving out. And yes,
I know people have already hearing from Laker fans. What
about Gail Goodrich and Jerry West? Yeah, it was different.

(07:39):
Now Jerry could get his shot, so could Gail. I mean,
Gail will I think average like twenty one and Jerry
probably twenty seven or twenty eight. You know, really good scores.
But it's just different today's game. You have to be
able to shoot a three and beat somebody off the dribble,
get to the hoop.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Yeah, Seed, and I like that too. Kyrie has been
around long enough to know how loaded. Now that question
is about you guys are the beat Like, oh no, no, no, no,
no no no.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
I need to diffuse this immediately, immediately. I can't let
this run, yes, because if they win now, all of
a sudden, Siries starts in Boston and then all of
a sudden, Hey, do you guys think you're the most
challenged back court in NBA?

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Here? What happened?

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Kyrie?

Speaker 3 (08:19):
I thought you guys were the best back court of
all time.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
I guess me. Yeah. They probably have a list of
the best scoring back courts, Pauling.

Speaker 7 (08:29):
I couldn't find scoring back courts, but I found a
bunch of lists of back back courts at all time.
Offensive is a key word here because Steph Curry, Klay
Thompson are way up there. Isaiah Thomas and Joe Jumars
are way up there on a lot of lists. But
they're all purpose players. Isaiah passer Jumar is a lockdown defender.
A lot of people say they're the best, most complete

(08:49):
backcourt because they played that everything. There's two other lists
like Bob Coosey and Sam Jones, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott,
Tony Parker, Managing Noble, great Ron. Yeah, those are all
in that Ilk, Michael Jordan, whoever the bulls other guard was.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah, John Packson or oh no, no, he had like
Craig Hodges or something. So they you know, Steve Kerr
was on there, Ron Harper.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
So Michael and anyone.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Basically, No, no, I think you got to be fair
to see certain guys were asked to do certain things.
Joe Dumar's his first job was to guard Jordan and
then he was a you know, nineteen or twenty point scorer.
Isaiah was a nineteen point scorer as well. You know
Magic wasn't Magic could have averaged thirty Yeah. Byron Scott though,

(09:43):
you know, he he got those you know, kind of
pull up jumpers. You know that Magic would find him
and he hit jumpers, not necessarily beating you off the dribble,
but he was a great spot up shooter. Yeah, that's
I have no problem with that. I mean, Luca is
one of the great scores of all the time. His
ability to do what he does every single night. And

(10:05):
then you throw in Kyrie, Yeah, that's pretty talented. You'd
be hard pressed to go. These guys are better at
getting their shots. Yes, more, Kyrie's been a part of
some crazy duos. Kyrie Lebron, Kyrie Katie would standing work? Okay?
Is Kyrie Lebron? Does that trump everybody else? I would

(10:28):
think so. I mean Lebron's a guard.

Speaker 7 (10:35):
I don't think he was listed as a guard semantics,
I know, okay, but ball handling sure.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
I would probably have Kyrie and Lebron in there.

Speaker 7 (10:50):
As I've mentioned before, Lebron has had different positions by
year the official NBA registry. In his first year the
shooting guard, he was a power He was a small
forward for eight years, that a power forward for two years,
small forward for two years, power forward again, point guard
with the Lakers his first two years. In twenty one
to twenty two, Lebron was listed as a center for

(11:10):
the Laker. This is the official designation of the NBA,
and he's currently a power forward again. He's played every position. Yeah,
I think that's on purpose.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Well, it might be easier to make the All NBA
team back then when it was you had to have
two forwards, you know, you had to have your center
and your two guards. Now it's positionless the way it
should be. Joe and Orlando, Hey Joe, what's on your mind?

Speaker 8 (11:35):
Good morning?

Speaker 9 (11:36):
And Dad? I think this was kind of steering right
on track of where you're at as far as when
it comes to these duos. I think primary ball handlers
should be taken into account. And you say Steph Curry
and Clay. I understand Dremonds has been the guy that's
the primary ball handler, but if you look at that

(11:58):
last championship into Celtics, I think it adds a little
bit more credibility to his legacy. Is it fair to
say that on a team to be successful, you need
a guy that's a primary ball handler with the ability
to score. But like you said, we'll need some help.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Well, I mean I could look at a point forward here,
and Draymond is a point forward and he's a and
he's when you're forward, is leading your team and assists.
Then what's that say about your back court? Draymond would
be a point forward. I mean we've had point forwards before,

(12:35):
but you know, Draymond has been extremely successful and being
that point forward for that team. Uh, let's take a break.
Reggie Miller will join us. I'll get him on this topic.
Also the passing of a fellow former Bruin and Bill Walton,
so we'll take a break. We're back after this in
the Dan Patrick Show.

Reggie Miller will be on the call tonight in Dallas,
Game four Western Conference Finals timberwolvesine Mavericks. Tip Off time
is eight thirty Eastern on TNT. Reg will be with
Kevin Harlan, stan Van Gundy and Ali LaForce. Great to
see you, Reg. We were just talking about best scoring
backcourts NBA history. Stan Van Gundy brought this up, you

(13:58):
got a reaction. You were like, whoa, that is this
the best scoring backcourt in NBA history with Luca and Kyrie.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
And let me clarify exactly what he said, the best
offensive like you said scoring, Throw either one of them
the ball and they can go win you the ballgame.
And I agree with him others that are in the
conversation because we brought this up to the studio guys
and they were absolutely destroying Coach Fan on this assessment,

(14:31):
because obviously Draymond said Stephan and Clay and we're like, whoa, Steph, Yes,
you're just not throwing the ball to Clay and say
go win me a ballgame. Though he's had huge games,
but you're not throwing him the ball like Kyrie and Luca.
So Isaiah and Joe comes into the conversation in terms

(14:52):
of scoring the basketball, but I don't think they're scoring
it at such a high clip like Luca and Kyrie.
Earl the Pearl and Clyde maybe, but after that then
I couldn't think of anyone else. So to answer your question, yes,
I am in agreement with coach the best offensive scoring

(15:17):
duo in basketball history. Yes, we're not saying the best duo,
the best offensive scoring duo.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Yes, okay, could I have Lebron and Kyrie in Cleveland
a power forward?

Speaker 4 (15:32):
He's not. He's not a guard. He's a power forward.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
No, he handles the he's listed as a power forward.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
He's listened as power forward. We're talking Luca is the
point guard and Kyrie is the shooting guard on this
Dallas team. They're listed as point guard and shooting guard.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Why did Lebron want to get listed as a power
forward or three and centered one year?

Speaker 4 (15:58):
I think probably to show his talent. Yeah, he's not
really a power forward either. I think when it goes down,
when he's going into the Hall of Fame, I think
he's going to go in as a small forward. When
you think of Lebron James, I think of him as
him and Larry Larry Birtimiri the greatest small forwards of
all time. He's not a power forward. He's a power

(16:19):
forward in today's game, in that twenty one years in
the league, but in his heyday he's a small forward.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
All right, let me turn our attention to tonight's game.
If you were Karl Anthony Towns, teammate or coach, what
would you say to.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
Him, Don't listen to all the noise because there's a
lot of it right now, and continue to try to
get to your spots in your shots. He's struggling right now,
right let's face it, and it very well could be
a sweep if he doesn't find his shot. I'm gonna
throw some numbers out at you for it. For if

(16:56):
Minnesota wants to continue this series and get it back
to Minnesota, Anthony Edwards's got to have thirty five plus
eight and eight. Carl Anthony Towns has to have just
twenty five in fifteen right sixty between the two of them.
If they can get to that number, to me, that
means that number one, they're scoring the basketball. But that

(17:21):
means Dallas is going to have to double them at
some point in time, and Jane Daniels will get off
a little bit. Mike Conley, who's played well the last
two games, will continue to eat. But if Anthony doesn't
get thirty five plus, if Kat doesn't get twenty five plus,
then this series is going to be over. But if

(17:41):
i'm Karl Anthony Towns, You've got to block out the
noise because you're in the final four situation and things
get highlighted a little bit more and you are struggling.
But he's got to stop settling for threes. Theodore right
when he got going, it was when he was driving
the basketball and he got a couple of layups going.

(18:03):
But he's settling for too many threes and they are
not falling for him.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Yeah, when they let you shoot a three, that should
be a selling for a reason. Yeah, go ahead. If
you had your pick though game on the line, Luca
or Kyrie with the ball, who would you take?

Speaker 4 (18:26):
We see them both be successful in this role.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Yeah, but you're Jason Kidd. You're drawing up a play
game on the line tonight.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
I'm probably gonna go with Luca because he plays at
such a unique pace. It's very difficult for you to
block his shot, and it's very especially when he's going
to that step back three that we saw in Game
two for the game winner. You're not blocking that. So
I would probably go with Luca. But it would be

(18:57):
more probably more entertaining to have the ball in ky
his hands and to see the handles. Both would be
fun very much the same way that left hand game
winner against Denver. This regular season, both have shown that
they can produce in the biggest moments. That's why they
all are the best offensive duo in the NBA history.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
See, I would love to see Kyrie because then I
know Anthony Edwards would be guarding him, so I would
get I mean it would be I don't know, world, Yeah, yeah,
who's guarding Luca? Like, Okay, you're gonna have somebody, but
I know.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
You could have Anthony Edwards on Luca too. I know
Jada McDaniels has kind of been the guy that's supposed
to be guarded him most of the time, but Aunt
has guarded him in very small stretches in this series.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
Talking to Reggie Miller, he's on the call tonight Game
four Western Conference Finals Timberwolves and the Mavericks. Timberwolves getting too.
I feel like Minnesota is going to win this game.
I don't know why, Probably no reason to think that,
but that's what happens with these crazy thing scenarios. What
do you think, Well, let.

Speaker 4 (20:03):
Me just let me just say this, it's very difficult
to beat a team four times in a row. We
just saw it last night with the Celtics beating Indiana
four straight but come playoff times, you don't look at
it like there's no way we're going to lose four
in a row, because each game in the series takes
on the life of its own, and tonight, again I

(20:28):
threw out those numbers. Those two guys have to play well,
and they have to play well on the road, and
Anthony Edwards did a lot of that in the fourth quarter.
In the second half, it was the reason why they
took the lead. It's just or excuse me, Kat didn't
come along for the ride. They both have to play
well on the road for them to force this game

(20:50):
back to Minnesota. If one is on and the other
is not, I don't think they have enough, especially the
way Kyrie and Luca have been dominating the fourth But
I say one thing they do have a silver lining.
Derek Lively not playing tonight is a huge boost for
Minnesota because he has been absolutely destroying them and he's

(21:13):
been the silent killer for them on the offensive, glass,
blocking shots, being a facilitator when they double those two guys.
Him not being in the game is an advantage for Minnesota.
Let's see if they can take advantage of it.

Speaker 2 (21:28):
Like Boston sweeps it wasn't that easy, but they do
sweep what stands out as Boston moves on.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
Let me say this about the Boston and Celtics, Drew
Holliday and Derek White. It's almost unfair. Seriously, those two
dudes do every single little thing that impact winning, and
they take the temperature of their team whatever their team

(21:58):
will need that night. I know all the headlines go
to Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown, and rightfully, so those
dude gets done. They're there all stars. Brown was the
Eastern Conference MVP. I get it. But this team the
bread and butter. To me, it's Holiday and White. Those
guys they do everything almost to the point if I

(22:22):
was an Eastern Conference team, I'm I'm serious. I don't know.
When Derek White's contract is up, I would offer him
the max. So they so Boston cannot sign and they
can't sign everyone. He is that good man. He does everything.
They do everything. It's almost not there, really is it.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Do you think Jalen Brown does he think this is
his team? I know we give credit to Jason Tate.
It's almost like Jalen Brown. I hear it in his voice.

Speaker 4 (23:02):
You kind of heard it when he was on the
day was talking about I never went anything, you know,
because most of the shine does go to Jason Tatum.
He gets all the commercials, he's, you know, a brand
Jordan and Betty. You know, he gets all that.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
But the mentality though, to be the man Tatum.

Speaker 4 (23:18):
It's a little bit different, Okay, night in and night
out when you're the mark Matt And we're finding that
in Anthony Edwards. Look, just ten days ago, we were
saying he was Michael Jordan. You know, he's a cross
between Goby Dwayne Wade. I was throwing that out. Let's
stop it, right. It's the difference when you've got to

(23:39):
be the man and you've got to shine when the
lights are the brightest. And both Tatum and Brown have
done that. They've had their moments. Who cares whose team
it is right now? Their main objective should be winning
a championship and they're four games away from that. But
they are loaded, and truthfully, I know Porzingis is on

(23:59):
the and he's gonna be back at some point in
the NBA Finals. I hope that doesn't mess up chemistry.
They are playing that good. Al Horford, this is probably
the best we see Al Horford over the.

Speaker 2 (24:11):
Last Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer, excuse.

Speaker 4 (24:16):
I'm so sorry, future Hall of Famer.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
Yes, yes, Al Horford.

Speaker 4 (24:22):
This is probably the best he's he has played and
shot over the last four or five years. Right now,
chemistry has an all time high. The Celtics the team
to beat. But I will say this, if it is Dallas,
they've got two nuclear weapons waiting on him. But the
problem with with with Dallas is Boston has a lot

(24:45):
of guys that can defend those two dudes.

Speaker 2 (24:48):
Yeah, you got Holiday and you got Derek White, who
you know, they can play a little defense.

Speaker 4 (24:54):
And if you remember the two regular season games that
were played between Dallas and again Dallas has to finish
business night. Let me get this out. There's no script.
Minnesota kids still come back, but it's highly unlikely. It's
never been done. But if it is Dallas, if you
remember the two regular season games, Jalen Brown put on
a clinic versus Doncic, So go back and watch those

(25:17):
games and he made it kind of personal. So that
would be a fun matchup to watch. If it is
Dallas in.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Boston thirty two after the hour, which seems appropriate. That
was Bill Walton's number thirty two at least when he
was playing at UCLA, I believe. And when you were
a kid, how a, where were you of Ucla with
Bill Walton?

Speaker 4 (25:42):
I think everyone was aware of UCLA. I mean growing
up in Riverside, Bruins were everything for us. On KTLA
Channel five. That's all we used to watch was the Bruins.
So for me to be fortunate to have an opportunity
to play for UCLA and have those legends come back

(26:03):
and give us clinics speeches, life lessons. Bill was always
the first one in the gym and at that time
he was playing for the Celtics by the time I
got to UCLA, so it was those benteral robberies between
the Lakers and the Celtics and he was a part
of that. And to have him come back and work

(26:23):
with surfing Jack Hayley and Stuart Gray and Kenny Fields
and just to have his because we wanted to know, like,
what was it really like in those locker rooms and
on the court when Magic and Bird and it was
cool to hear those stories and our friendship kind of

(26:45):
grew even more so once Larry Bird became our coach
in Indiana because he was around all the time then
because he was also working with NBC during those mid
nineties as well. So we've had a great relationship. It's
a sad and ruin nation, but we know he's in
a better place. We know we have guardian angels. And uh,

(27:07):
he live life to the fullest. I mean that's kind
of all what you want. You want a full life
where people loved you, you did what you love to do.
And uh, you know, he was success at every level
he played at.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
And he was not it's weird to be intense on
the floor, but off the floor he was not. And
I don't understand, you know, at like Troy Polamalu. He
would come on the show and he'd have this very
soft voice and he'd go out there and he takes
somebody's head off, and you'd be like, and Bill would
be out there and be really intense, and then he'd

(27:43):
be off the floor and he'd be like, oh, you know,
Bob Dylan, you know, and he'd be singing songs and
I don't know that. I mean, some guys can turn
it off when they get off the floor. Uh, but
was Jordan like that? I mean Jordan was intense off right.

Speaker 4 (28:00):
Had that aura still does. Look with Bill, he knew
what basketball meant to him and what you know, you
talk about Bob Dylan and you know, how about the
Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia who you know he was
a deadhead and followed him around. He was a groupie

(28:21):
and he knew that, Yes, basketball was just a small
part of my life. There's so many other things.

Speaker 10 (28:30):
You know.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
It's funny because recently, over the last ten years, he
and I really bonded over two wheels. He was a
huge cyclist enthusiasts as well as I am, and a
lot of our times was spent on bikes, mileage training plans.
So there were so many layers to Bill Basketball, a musician, cyclist, activists,

(28:57):
you know, people forget you know, he got in a
lot of hot water back at UCLA. You know, words
about the Vietnam War and you know, sticking up for
for the vets and things like that. So there was
lots of layers to him, and he was very unique
and it came across as a as an unbelievable broadcaster

(29:18):
as well. So, yes, he will be missed, but he
will definitely never be forgotten.

Speaker 2 (29:25):
That feeling of getting swept or getting or losing at
the buzzer in the final game of a series. Like
if if I said you could get swept or you
lose in dramatic fashion game seven at the buzzer.

Speaker 4 (29:42):
I would probably want to be swept, because if I
lose at game seven at the buzzer, there's so many
to this day, you know, I still think about some
games game sevens if I could have, would have, should have?
We should have done this, I should have done that
with more I should have done this. So to be swept,

(30:04):
I mean, that's under the rug and you move on.
You get another chance when you lose those game sevens
or game six is at the buzzer and another team advances. Look,
it's how many years have I been out twenty plus years,
and I'm still thinking about a lot of games. So
it's I'd much rather be swept than lose at the

(30:26):
buzzer or a tight game, because if I could or
would have should have, they just gnaw you. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:32):
But if I get swept, we had no chance. I'm
in it to win it. And if I get crushed
at the buzzer, well I at least got to the buzzer.

Speaker 4 (30:41):
I will say that's about my beloved Pacers. They can
say all they want, and they spend it very well,
but they never recovered from game one. They gift wrapped
that Game one. You can't be up three with the
ball ten seconds left and lose the game. You can't

(31:02):
they And coming into game two we're moving past that.
We know we could play with them, but we got
to keep the pace up. They never recovered from that,
and you can't give rapped games in the playoffs and
expect to get them back. They easy could have won
Game three at home, should have won Game four last
night at home, but the better team won, And that's

(31:26):
why we're all getting ready for Kanku together.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
What is like, though, when you know somebody's getting the
ball games on the line and there's really nothing you
could do.

Speaker 4 (31:40):
As a player, you kind of loved it because they're
pretty much at your mercy. I've been on the flip
side of that too, going to get some unbelievable players
like Kobe and MJ. Joe Dumars back in the day
and his bad boy Pistons. There's just really enough. You're
you're hoping for the best, but you know, bad things

(32:05):
happen to good.

Speaker 2 (32:06):
People from tire right.

Speaker 4 (32:12):
I consider myself a good person.

Speaker 2 (32:14):
I just can't imagine Kobe's got the ball and you
know he's gonna he's he's gonna shoot. You know it?

Speaker 4 (32:23):
The game three, the game four when Shack fouled out
and we're thinking yes because it was two to one, Yes,
because we had no answer for shock zero fouled out.
We got this and that damn kid, he just he

(32:47):
turned into well Kobe. There was nothing I could there
was nothing I could do. So yes, I have felt that.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
Sorry, sorry I brought that. Yes, and you didn't you
take Jordan's bowls to a game seven? Was that nineteen
ninety seven? Maybe?

Speaker 4 (33:10):
And uh, yes we did, Yes we did. And here's
the thing we going into that we were. This is
how cocky I think I've told you this. We were
cocky enough to saying we want to retire MG. That
was our motto. And the play that the play that
changed everything, jump ball rough six. It's Rick Smith's and

(33:33):
Scotty they win the jump ball. Scotty wins, it gets
the ball to cur hits a three and it goes
downhill after that. It's little things. Why do I remember this?
And why are you making me really this I don't know,
but it's it's those That's why I say I'd much

(33:54):
rather be sweat because who can if and plus Indiana
was a sixty, Boston has the overall best record. They
were supposed to beat them. Maybe not a sweet, but
they were supposed to win. I'm reliving the bulls all
the time. That jump ball, like if we could have won,

(34:15):
that score got up eight or nine. Jesus the word.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Hope you have a great day.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
Oh yeah, it'll be really great preparing.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
Ask ask Van Gundy tonight who would he rather have
the ball in the hands of game on the line
between Luke on the telecast, Yeah, mark my word. Okay,
now teleo that will come up.

Speaker 4 (34:39):
I want to hear his answer.

Speaker 2 (34:41):
All right, we'll be watching. Thanks about talk to you
next week.

Speaker 4 (34:44):
Appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
All right. That's Reggie Alowiicious Miller. I'm bringing out all
these pat scenarios there. Yeah, Reggie's like, man, damn hit
me with the punches here. Game four tonight on TNT
at eight thirty Reggie with Kevin Harlan, Stan Van Gundhian
Alley La Force. We'll take a break. We will give
you our best and Worst of the Weekend.

Speaker 1 (35:06):

The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six

you hours. By the way, the Pacers and the Timberwolves
have each blown three fourth quarter leads in the Conference Finals,
the first teams to blow at least three fourth quarter
leads in the Conference Finals since the Celtics blew four
fourth quarter leads against the Heat back in twenty twenty.

(35:38):
Stat of the Day, stat of the Day, Best stat
of the day, Stat of the day.

Speaker 4 (35:45):
Here comes that?

Speaker 2 (35:46):
What stat of the day? Stat of the day? Brought
to you Bob Panini America, the official treating cards of
The Dan Patrick Show, Lucas and Texas. Hey, Luke, what's
on your mind?

Speaker 8 (35:59):
Hey morning, how are you doing?

Speaker 2 (36:00):
Great man? Good good?

Speaker 8 (36:02):
Hey, calling in with the best and the worst of
the weekend. Andrew and Washington beat me to the punch,
but my best is Angel Hernandez finally retiring. I would
encourage you guys to try to get him to dial
into the show, but like most times, he probably missed
the call. Wow, all right, look, but I will say
I don't know if this is a best or a

(36:24):
worst of the weekend, because I'm all for players earning
the money, but like a guy that could probably be
as doubt of a polar opposite of Bill Walton as possible.
I mean, I know, Dan, you keep a very close
track on Saudi Soccer League scoring records, but you know
Ronaldo broke the season record with thirty five goals, and
if you per break his salary, that's an economic six

(36:46):
million dollars per goal that he made this year.

Speaker 2 (36:49):
Yeah, I think his value was probably far more than
just the goals that he had. But yes, he did
break the single season scoring record. Not sure who held
that before him, but Ronaldo is the single season goalscorer.
Todd Best and Worst of the weekend, we were just
talking about them.

Speaker 5 (37:09):
Sunday night in Dallas, Luke and Kyrie score thirty three points,
keeping the Tea Walls from getting back in the series.
Maps can close out the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight would sweep
in Game four.

Speaker 2 (37:17):
Worst of the weekend, the reigning n L.

Speaker 5 (37:18):
MVP Ronald Acuna Junior suffers a torn acl ran the
basis Sunday in the first and against the Pirates Brave
start out for the rest of the season.

Speaker 2 (37:26):
See no counter best and worst.

Speaker 3 (37:28):
That's to the weekend Pacers guard Andrew Nempard. That dude
talk about getting an opportunity and making the most of it.
Kid really made a name for himself on a big stage,
which I just thought was really awesome. Even if they
get swept, Yeah, well done. You know my worst the
best dish. I'm not really sure how to feel about it.
Of the weekend is Angel Hernandez retiring and just the

(37:50):
overwhelming amount of support for that.

Speaker 2 (37:52):
Decision, and his lawyer said he wasn't forced out. According
to The Athletic.

Speaker 3 (37:59):
It was so much that I almost started to feel
bad for him, where I was like, dang, man, Like
I get that the dude was bad at this, but
even like CC Sabbathia, it's like jumping in.

Speaker 2 (38:09):
There were just lists.

Speaker 3 (38:10):
Almost immediately of his top ten worst calls, all of
those things.

Speaker 9 (38:15):
I just.

Speaker 3 (38:17):
It's so weird to be. You know, we spent a
lot of time on this show. Well not a lot,
but it's certainly come up being like, dang, this dude
really blew this call.

Speaker 2 (38:24):
It must be really tough to cram In and you know,
the the top ten worst calls that he made because
you had more than that, so trying to fit the
ten in there when you probably had twenty. And you
know what, he was an equal opportunity destroyer. He could
be bad at home, first, second, third, in the outfield.

(38:44):
He pretty much spread that around there. But after thirty
three years, then all of a sudden, you finally come
to the realization that maybe I'm not a very good umpire.

Speaker 7 (38:54):
Yeah, Paul, you know what's awkward about this situation is
I don't know him, but I've seen him being talked
to SEMs like a nice person. And my guess is
he was trying to do his job correctly. I don't
think he was doing it purposely bad. Major League Baseball
allowed this to go on for an extra decade. He's
been a topic for over a decade around social media.

Speaker 2 (39:12):
But Baseball can't control this. This is the umpire Union.

Speaker 7 (39:15):
Okay, Then about the umpire union letting an umpire get
critiqued for years and not you know, censuring him or
encourage him.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
To retill you get it graded. And that's what I
don't understand. At some point, you fail, like you know,
if I don't get good grades, then I fail.

Speaker 7 (39:31):
But you have employees here. If someone's doing a poor
job for a decade, you would not let that happen.

Speaker 2 (39:36):
You would not let No, it's been two decades with
TOD I was ready for that. It's a weird case,
it is, but still your profession. If if I'm in
the profession, I'm an umpire, I mean, at some point
we have to have a conversation of this makes us
look bad or that we don't care. And you know,

(39:56):
with gambling, and you have an umpire who is at
times I'm substandard, then it's a bigger picture here. Now
there's more people invested in what these calls are. It's
not just a game. And I don't know if maybe
that's why they made the decision now, But here we
are at the end of May and he announces his retirement,

(40:18):
says he wasn't forced out, probably encouraged, nudged. But The
Athletic reported that Bob nightgl had some details on that
as well. But Angel Hernandez, who are we gonna hate
now or dislike or bring up like who's the second
worst umpire? Feels like all right, Angel Hernandez, the guy

(40:41):
who is the second worst umpire is probably like Gonda
Hope Angel stays on that job for a long time.
Angel retired. Oh no, I'm gonna figure me out here.
Two hours in the books on this Tuesday, one more
to go. We are going to bring you a portion
of a I think the last time Bill Walton was

(41:01):
on the show, it was a lengthy interview, so I'll
bring a portion of that to you and more phone
calls as well. Eight seven seven to three DP Show
