Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio Hour.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Two on this Monday, Best and worst of the weekend?
What you saw that you liked you didn't like? My
starting lineup, Fritzy Seaton, Marv Paul, yours truly and course
the backroom guys, we're packing up our belongings and we'll
be heading out to South Bend, Indiana. We'll be there
for Thursday and Friday, right outside a Legends pub on
campus and first come, first serve, standing room only parking
(00:29):
is self directed there. We'd love to see you eight
seven to seven to three. DP show email address Dpatdanpatrick
dot com, Twitter handle a DP show interesting pole question
first hour the program, did James Franklin have a did
we say bad weekend or a good weekend? Seaton?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
We asked if he had a bad week, bad weekend?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah, Okay, he got fired, but he will be paid
upwards of forty nine million dollars to go away. The
results from the first hour.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
The sixty four since said yes, he did have a.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Bad week on weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Rick Neuheisel, the college analyst for CBS, will join us.
We'll ask him about that. Did James Franklin, Did Penn
State do the right thing to fire him? New his
will join us. Johnny Smoltz will join us. In the
final hour of the program, we got baseball coming up,
Mariners blue Jays Game two, Seattle took game one, and
Dodgers Brewers that will be game one as well. All Right,
(01:28):
pole question for hour two? What are we going to
go with?
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Do you want to start going with Penn State replacement names?
As the hour two Pole question? Sort of working on
a list a little bit here and there.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, it just feels like you throw out like Matt
Campbell at Iowa State, his name, he was like Kirk
Farrance back in the day at Iowa it was like
kurk Farence. He's up for that job. Oh they could
hire Kurtin and he never left, which, hey, good for him.
You find a place, you love, a place, there's do
nothing wrong with staying in a place, and I love that.
(02:03):
Some of the greatest coaches of all time. No, I
know it's different, and money's different. But when you're part
of that fabric, that community, and that's you and that's
your city, your town, your people, your alumni, we win,
we lose together. Just something to be said for that.
And I know it's opening up the scrap book and
the way it used to be, but there is something
(02:25):
to be said about that, the loyalty that comes on
both sides building something. Penn State thought they had something.
I mean, they gave him a ten year extension and
it just didn't work out. He wasn't going and he
wasn't beating these top ten teams. You can't tell me
that you're amongst the great teams in college football if
(02:47):
you can't beat the great teams in college football. Yeah, Paulie, I.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Guess I have a poll for Hour two.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
If you're Hoosier's coach Kurt Signetti, you make the playoffs
this year, all goes well, and Penn State offers you
three million dollars more per season to jump to their
place next year.
Speaker 6 (03:04):
You do what.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I don't know his makeup, but what would you guys do?
I once again, i'd have to have I'd have to
know everything about Indiana. Indiana doesn't have a sugar Daddy
there for their football program. It's still a basketball school.
It's just like no matter what Bill Belichick does at
North Carolina, there's still a basketball school. Kentucky there's still
(03:26):
a basketball school. They're just certain schools that that's what
you think of. I would hope he stays at Indiana
if you're building something and you know, he's established a
culture at previous stops where he wins, he's not afraid,
you know, tug on Superman's cap. They go out to
(03:47):
Oregon and win that game. That was my surprise of
the weekend. It wasn't that they won, it was how
they won. You got a quarterback and you got a
couple of skilled wide receives. I mean, they have skilled
position players and you've got a really good defense there.
And it's not just hey, we're going to go to
the playoffs. If I'm Indiana, I got to start thinking
(04:08):
and I should start thinking a bigger picture here playing
for a national championship. Yes, Tod, I hope he stays too.
Speaker 7 (04:15):
Wouldn't it be nice to be a legend for many
years at a school that may not be quite as
big as some of the you know, more elite or
famous programs over the years. Then you know, to grab
me obviously someone else's money. If he wants some more
money and he wants to say, look, you know, graduated
to Penn state. But there's definitely something to be said
for continuing to build if there's enough money in place
in the world of NIL to just stay there.
Speaker 8 (04:37):
Thank you, Todd, Yes, Marvin, Yeah, at toss Point, I
think you become a bigger legend if you built like
Dabo Sweeney. He's a bigger legend because of what he
did at Clemson if he was at Alabama. No, not
Nick Saban, He's just an Alabama football coach. But you
build this program into a national power, that means more.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
But I don't know if it means more to them.
I mean, I can romanticize about this and say, boy,
wouldn't it be great if you showed sustainability for twenty years.
I don't know if they care. I don't know if
they should care. But I'm only going by growing up.
You know, you know that that coach is going to
be at that university now with the money with NIL,
(05:18):
with boosters and transfers, and I mean it's just different.
It's almost like if you don't take another job, you're
falling behind. You know, Hey, you got offered that job. Hey,
if they're going to stop calling, I mean, they eventually
stopped calling. Kirk Farns at Iowa.
Speaker 8 (05:36):
Yeah, Mark Caitlin de Boor is perfect example, like, look,
I have to take this job. I don't know if
I'll ever be this hot again. I have to take it.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
I didn't think he had to take it because now
you're in a completely different culture and you'd get swallowed up.
And now I think he's got a really good quarterback.
I think Ty Simpson's a really good quarterback, and you
know he's riding the ship. But you know they could
have lost the game against Missouri. I just think when
you go you go into the SEC certain you know, Georgia, Alabama,
(06:08):
certain places, Florida, you gotta be careful you don't get
swallowed up because it's different. I mean, you dubbed they
love their football, but not like they do in Alabama.
And all of a sudden, it doesn't take long for
you know, the Pitchfork Porks to come out.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Yeah, Pauline Kurtzignetti's an interesting case.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
He was at James Madison, got a lot of pub
there and was hot, and you got Indiana, which is
a really nice step up. But he's sixty four years old.
If you don't take Penn State, now that might be
last call.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Yeah, and I think that's a fair assessment of the situation.
It just feels like everybody keeps moving every everything is transient.
It's not I'm gonna stay. I'm a pause right here.
There aren't many guys like Mark few at Gonzaga, and
he flirted with the UCLA job years years ago. I
(07:02):
like when they stay. I like seeing that or having
that familiarity. But Mark Fugh has been there for twenty
six seasons at Gonzaga and he's turned them into a
powerhouse and has no reason to leave. All right, Zack
and Knoxville, Good morning, Zach. What's on your mind today?
Speaker 9 (07:21):
ADP, thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 10 (07:24):
Worst of the weekend was James Franklin getting fired as
an Ohio State fan. This is almost as dark and
day as when Pretty Hope is let go.
Speaker 9 (07:31):
It just really hurts. But just a quick story.
Speaker 10 (07:36):
My sister was at the Tennessee Arkansas game on Saturday
night and she has been in a skybox and she
said that all these people kept coming up to the
skybox next to her to talk to some guy that
she thinks was a rapper.
Speaker 6 (07:48):
She was like, I think his name is Jelly Roll.
Speaker 11 (07:51):
Yeah, have you ever been in a situation like that
where you didn't realize until after you were in the
presence of somebody that was well now.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Yes, it happened two many years ago at a golf tournament,
and it was a kind of a celebrity golf tournament.
Each group had a celebrity in the group, and everybody,
you know, keyed off and had fun, played best ball,
and I got to the fifteenth hole and I'm just
kind of taking inventory, asking people what they do for
(08:22):
a living. And you know, there was a woman there,
a school teacher, had somebody there who was a businessman.
And then I talked to Dan, who was in my group,
and I said, what do you do Dan? He goes,
I write books. I said anything that I've read. He goes,
I don't know the Da Vinci code. And I went,
(08:45):
oh my god, it's Dan Brown. Wait a minute, hold on,
he's the celebrity. And I got mad at the whole well,
I kind of act like it was mad at the host,
and I said, ow Brown was the celebrity. He goes, yeah,
I thought you would appreciate that. And I went, oh
my god, And of course I called my wife right away.
(09:07):
I go, hey, I'm playing golf and I'm playing golf
with Dan Brown. So you're playing golf with the guy
who has the same name as the guy who wrote
the Da Vinci cat. I go, no, no, it's him,
and she goes, well, wait, aren't you the celebrity in
her I said, I'm supposed to be, but I'm not.
And I told that to Dan Brown, and because I said,
you know, I gotta be honest, I thought I was
(09:29):
the celebrity, and he said, you can be if you want.
But then then he told me how many millions of
books he sold with the da Vinci Code. But he
talked about how he had death threats because and he
had to have an armed guard in his garage, like
(09:49):
he had to have arm guard twenty four to seven
because of the Da Vinci Code. And he since moved
out of where he was in New Hampshire. But and
I can talk about it now, but I was fascinating
where he said, you know, you write something, you're proud
of something, and then you live in fear for years
that they had to have somebody that was going to
(10:10):
be outside their house and then I think somebody in
the garage as well. But yeah, Dan Brown he was
the celebrity. So thank you, Zach, thank you for the
phone call and bringing up painful memories. Buddha in San Francisco,
Hi Buddha.
Speaker 12 (10:25):
Happy Monday, boys, every day's the Super Bowl, Fitzy, Let's
go baby. May we all have bad weekends like James Franklin, Dan,
I did not feel bad for that little guy, and
real quick as far as the nine Ers go, I
just wish we could be healthy, like it's.
Speaker 13 (10:41):
So ridiculous how.
Speaker 9 (10:42):
Many injuries we've been dealing with.
Speaker 13 (10:44):
And watching Fred Warner yesterday was just brutal, just the
whole situation at least me shaking.
Speaker 6 (10:49):
My head, Dan.
Speaker 13 (10:50):
But best of the weekend Panthers helping America win again
yesterday and watching Darry Jones and the Cowboys, watching Rico
Daddle feast all over them looking like two thousand and five,
Ladani and Thomlinson and Quick Bess of DP. Not sure
if you saw the random dude sitting in the end
zone in the Chiefs game.
Speaker 12 (11:09):
He had like a black shirt that just said.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Cowboys Boys hilarious. Yeah.
Speaker 13 (11:14):
And words of the weekend with Titan and Caitlin Clark
in the sweets, watching dam the officiating last as in
the Chiefs.
Speaker 6 (11:21):
Game, it was it was awful.
Speaker 13 (11:24):
I mean it was really a bad looking Like you
say DP when when you talk about the rest and
they're part of the storyline, that's usually not.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Good.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
It's hard to go through an entire game and not
be called for a penalty like not one holding goal,
Like come on, give me some scraps here, just just
call one. And then they gave you know, Kelsey the
catch and that wasn't a catch. But then they take
(11:53):
away Jared Goff's touchdown. There was a guy who I
think was gonna make forty five. He had fifteen thousand dollars.
I think I got this right from Dylan. He bet
fifteen thousand dollars on Jared Goff scoring the first touchdown.
It would have been that guy would have gotten forty
five thousand dollars if they allowed that touchdown with Jared Goff.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Yeah, Paul, I'm checking that off DraftKings and it's had
a better place to five grand for the first TD
score to be Jared Goff and the possible win was
four hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Oh, I'm sorry, that's right,
five thousand to win four hundred and fifty and it
was a winner for about three minutes.
Speaker 14 (12:35):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
So okay, it was five grand to win four hundred
and fifty thousand.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
It was plus nine thousand on this bet because goff
rarely runs.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
And nine times five is forty five. Yes, so confirmed, Yes, yes,
Morvan damn.
Speaker 8 (12:51):
So that guy's got to buy a new TV because
I'm third.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
He broke his Oh, they flagged him. You know there's
certain things where you go. Why is that a penalty?
Even when linemen go downfield and uh, you know they
have to release after you throw the ball. Why if
they just let him run wild? Let him run like
you know, their buffaloes running with the bulls.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
Yes, Pauline, so without getting two into the weeds.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
The rule Jared goff Air quotes broke was the quarterback
can't line up under the center and put the hands
underneath the butt and then go in motion. He didn't,
and it appears that he purposely didn't put his hands
there because they were aware of the rule. So it
doesn't appear that the Lions broke any rule for a
legal motion. When you look at it, it's like the
(13:39):
Lions new that I can line up. I can stand
behind the center. I can't almost like get underneath center.
It's a really convoluted rule, Like.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Really, we're you gonna call him penalty on that?
Speaker 7 (13:52):
Yes, Todd, wouldn't it be more fun if everyone can
just keep moving and everyone's eligible. I don't understand that
an offensive lemman makes us block and then he does
a little pattern and you could just throw it to
the number sixty seven for sixty yards. What's the big deal?
He's on the field. Everyone should have a chance to
get the ball.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
We do have to have some rules though, but yeah,
there should be like linemen shouldn't have to wait to
release if you're throwing a screen pass. Let them go
start blasting people by the way. You know, they got
got rid of the kickoff for a little while. Now
it's back, and damn there are some collisions. There are
more violent collisions, it feels like now than there were
(14:29):
before when they were, you know, having regular kickoffs. It's
happening more often and there are plays where you go, wow,
they are hitting Cody in Washington high code. What's on
your mind today?
Speaker 15 (14:46):
Hey Dan, thanks for having me. You and the boys
special treat every morning and do best in the worse
of the weekend, and then just said kind of a
quick question, that's the weekend Mariners. Obviously going through the
roller coaster of emotions of that fifteen inning game and
then coming out of going to Toronto winning that first game.
(15:09):
That's huge. Twenty four years since the Alcs only team
never been to the World Series. Let's hope we get there.
Worst the weekend Oregon, that was rough. I had a
feeling and I thought of Dennis Green at the end
of they are who we thought they were. And then
the question Dan is I've always been fascinated and obviously
(15:31):
your story and kind of timeline and you know, the
chapters of what you've done and been through at the
Mothership when you were with ESPN, do.
Speaker 9 (15:41):
You have like a year or two year.
Speaker 15 (15:43):
Span where you look back and you're like, you know,
that was probably from your tenure and your time being there,
the funnest time or the most enjoyable and whether it
was the colleagues or just kind of what it all
entailed that you look back and you're like, that was
a great chapter.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Mid nineties we had a pretty good run. I was
doing Sports Center, got to cover the Chicago Bulls winning championships.
Sports Center had exploded. We started doing those Sports Center
commercials and it was just different, just a different feel,
and every single night it was live TV. Back then
(16:24):
you might have gotten a result, at least a score,
but you tuned in to watch the highlights. We were
having fun with the highlights. We were getting away with
things management. We would always test management just to see
if they stayed up and watched the show, and then
we would throw some things out and then we'd come
in the next day and be like, Okay. Now you
(16:46):
would get management to say, hey, nice show last night,
and I realized they didn't watch, you know, be like okay,
and you know, I remember my producer said, you know,
you should just ask what was the best part of
the show to see what they say, because they would.
They would do that with the radio show. They had
great show. I go okay, thank you, Yes, Marvin.
Speaker 8 (17:08):
During that run, were there guys that you felt like,
are his egos a little bit out of control? Because
now you guys are getting into movies, TV shows, music videos.
Was there any of that going on during that time?
Speaker 7 (17:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Yeah, I think we were all full of ourselves and
we had reason to be because it was all unfolding.
Next thing, you know, you're in a music video. Hey,
you want to be in a Sandler movie? Okay, Hey,
there was talk of us hosting Saturday Night Live, Keith
Oberman and myself. Hey, Sports Illustrated is thinking about naming
(17:39):
you guys Sportsmen of the Year sport you know, Sports Center.
Like all of a sudden, it's like, oh my god, wow, yeah, Paul.
Speaker 5 (17:45):
Before I joined ESPN, I was a typical college kid
watching you guys on Sports Center. I remember seeing you
in like a TGI Friday's commercial putting the barbecue sauce
on the kid's head.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
I was like, whoa, those guys are jumping out.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Yeah, because that's that's a national brand. All right, let's
take a break. Rick new Heisibal Jonas. We'll talk about
James Franklin, Bill Belichick, and we'll do so next to here,
Dan Patrick Show.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio w APP.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Paully Fools Gohare with Tony Foodsco. Yeah.
Speaker 16 (18:21):
As everybody knows, we're the hosts of the award winning
Polly and Toni Foodsco Show. Yeah, but instead of us
telling you how great we are, here's how Dan Patrick
described us when he came on our.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Show, quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated. What you doing interrupting
our promo? Yeah, you wasn't talking about you. You took
those clips totally of context.
Speaker 16 (18:41):
Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Let me put this into context. Shut up.
Speaker 16 (18:48):
Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Paully and Tony Fosco
Show on iHeartRadio Apple podcasts oherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 9 (18:54):
Yee.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
There's a little skirmish at the end of the Chiefs
Lions game where a defensive player, Brian Branch smacked Juju
Smith Shuster and there were some words. Juju was put
his hand out to shake his hand after the game,
and Branch said that Schuster had blocked him in the
back and then you smack him on the side of
(19:19):
the helmet. There here is Andy Reid, the Chief, said
coach on that skirmish.
Speaker 17 (19:25):
Now, you guys, I mean it was you know, the
guy came up and hit Juju for a lot. Looked
like no reason. Im, We're taking a knee. You know's
that's tough. I mean, put pretty good damage on Juju's nose.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Okay, it didn't look like that because he hit him
on the side of the helmet there and then all
of a sudden bench clearing there. I mean, it could
have gotten ugly, but I didn't know. If you know
Smith Schuster had damage to his nose, yeah, Paulin or yes.
Speaker 14 (19:57):
I'm guessing that maybe you know, right after this you
just sort of gets thrown to the ground and his
helmet comes off. Ben that's probably where his nose got messed. Oh,
not from that sort of smash to the face.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
All right, good, thank you for that. If you're coming
out to South Bend on Thursday or Friday, we will
be outside Legends Pub on campus. That'll be Thursday and Friday.
First come first, sir, Standing room only. Parking is self
directed there. But if you want to come out and
meet with us, have some fun, have some laughs, and
(20:31):
we will be in the shadows of greatness there from
Notre Dame not us. You won't be in the shadows
of greatness with us, but you know you'll be able
to be there on camp. That was our height. Well,
I mean yours, but I'm the tallest one, followed by Marvin,
then Seating, then Paulie, than Todd.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
I think Paul's taller than me.
Speaker 5 (20:54):
Your hair is taller than mine. You got much better,
much taller hair, though equals lot.
Speaker 14 (20:59):
Yeah, Yeah, I'm probably, I'm probably. The real question is
between Paul and Marvin. I think I'm slightly taller than
Todd though.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Okay, Well, Paula, You're not six feet are you? I'm
listed six feet in the program.
Speaker 18 (21:12):
Mmm.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
I think I'm sixty even, but.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
It's close, Okay. Rick Neuheisel, CBS Sports college football analyst,
and he was in Eugene for the big upset with
Indiana and Oregon, which we'll talk about in a moment.
We been spending a lot of time talking about Penn State.
Did Penn State do the right thing with James Franklin.
Speaker 19 (21:35):
You know, it's hard to imagine a business saying it's
the right thing when they're letting fifty million dollars go
out the door in dead money, which is exactly what
this is. But I think, Dan, what we're in is
an era where we're asking so much of our fan
base to participate financially with nil, you know, the collectives.
(21:55):
I know we're doing it in house, but still that
money's got to come from somewhere. And so I think
what we've got is a bunch of kind of pseudo owners.
And this is what happened with Jimbo Fisher at Texas
A and m some rich oil guy said he's got
to go all rite the check, and I'm sure something
close to that happened at Penn State and Pat Craft
(22:16):
had to move.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
You know, the record. If you just look at his
record overall record, you go, that's pretty impressive, and just
about any university would sign up for that. But I
said last week, there's there's the blue blood programs that
wouldn't put up with that kind of one loss record
to ranked teams. Ohio State, wo Michigan Wood, and Alabama wouldn't,
Georgia wouldn't. Penn State had to decide are we do
(22:40):
we want to be in that group? Are we going
to accept this? And I thought Franklin did a wonderful
job in restoring, you know, agreed some of the greatness
to that program, but it's not a coincidence that he
couldn't beat, you know, ranked teams.
Speaker 19 (22:55):
The number of games that went the other way make
it no longer a coincidence. I agree with that there
was something in the DNA that just didn't allow them
to play free in those games, So I get it.
I don't know that in the middle of the season
it makes a lot of sense, but it does put
them as the best job available.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
And if they're.
Speaker 19 (23:15):
Looking for a guy, I know Kurt Signetti's name is
the one that everybody's using if they're looking for somebody.
It does allow the wheels to start turning.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
How do you get paid or how does the university
pay you when you get fired?
Speaker 19 (23:29):
Is it? The Jimmy Sexton deal for gusmels On was
half of it was due in thirty days, so he
had twenty one million coming at the end of that deal,
and so Gus got.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
Ten point eight ten point eight in.
Speaker 19 (23:45):
Thirty days, and then over the life of the contract
they paid the other ten point eight. I penned the
song did I ever tell You You're My Hero? To
Gus Molls You're everything that I would like to be.
Bette Miller didn't sing it with as much a mone
as I did.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
I Promise you.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
The Indiana Handling Oregon you were at that game, and
it felt like Indiana was the better team and kind
of took control of it. Was there a turning point
for you in that game?
Speaker 4 (24:15):
I think it was shocking.
Speaker 19 (24:17):
I was thinking that the Oregon offense would be just
too fast. I just had in my mind, you know,
maybe you know, the Midwestern farm Plotters would be on
defense and it was just going to be lightning fast.
Whether it be the pace or the speed of the players.
They kept their edges all day long. That is a
dang good defense playing for Indiana, to go along with
(24:39):
a you know, rising star in Fernando Mendoz and two
really good probable NFL guys playing wide receiver. I just
think that's a really good football team. And I think
it was kind of shocking to Oregon that they could
not use their speed to an advantage. Give the Hoosiers
all the credit in the world.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
Talking to Rick new High this CBS Sports college football analysts,
they were in Eugene for Indiana's win at Oregon. I'm
watching the broadcast and you were very matter of factly
saying Bill Belichick will be relieved of his duties at
North Carolina or something similar to that. At the end
of the year.
Speaker 19 (25:17):
I can't imagine this going much longer if what we're
seeing continues, and what we're seeing is a very average
to below average team on the field that doesn't look
like they're having any fun, doesn't look inspired. The coach
has taken, you know, breaks.
Speaker 4 (25:35):
In the middle of season.
Speaker 19 (25:36):
I asked a couple of guys that I know who
played for coach Belichick, would he ever take like the
little rest vacations in the middle of a bye week.
Says that car was parked in that parking lot twenty
four to seven. That's where he lived. I just don't
see this as something that both sides are going to
say can continue one for the legacy, especially if the
(25:57):
money's right for Belichick. I see at the end of
the season this going in a vastly different direction.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
But does somebody hire him in the NFL, let's say
the Dolphins job was open.
Speaker 19 (26:08):
I can't imagine. I can't imagine somebody can go and
get Bill Belichick at this age, and given what we
just saw and the guy who said no distractions has
been distraction with.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
A capital D. I thought it was a big win
for USC, an impressive win to beat Michigan. I don't
know how good Michigan is, and I'm not quite sure
how good USC is, but you got to win that game,
knowing you got Notre Dame this weekend.
Speaker 19 (26:34):
To me, it's the best win Lincoln Riley's had at
SC because, as you point out, he has to be
able to play with the bullies, and Michigan had just
run rough shot over Nebraska, not so much in the points,
but in terms of just running the ball. For SC
to hold up in the trenches and to find a
(26:54):
way to win that game puts them in the contest.
And now they've got a real banner game this week
against the Irish. Kind of a must win for both
of them. As it relates to CFP.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
Any memories of South Bend were taking the show there
later in the week.
Speaker 19 (27:09):
You know, I've never been there for a game. I
have been there for spring practice. I got to speak
at a spring clinic for Brian Kelly. I have been there.
Tony Alfred used to be their running back coach. He
was my running back coach at Washington, so he gave
me the tour. The place is unbelievable. I mean it
is unbelievable. You're in for a treat, but it's going
(27:31):
to be raucous for game day. And how about the
Irish with just kind of presto change. Oh, they're back
right controlling their own destiny again with the two quality losses.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Great to talk to you, Thanks for joining us. Have
a great week.
Speaker 19 (27:45):
Always a pleasure.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
My friend Rick new Heiel, former college coach, non analyst
for CBS Sports. James in Virginia. Hi James, what's on
your mind?
Speaker 20 (27:56):
Oh?
Speaker 9 (27:56):
Thank you for taking my call. Brother. Happy Monday, DT
din Man to the commanders, big time, all the time,
every time. Uh, just what a great weekend of football, man.
Now it's ton timing man. The SEC is just pat
full of teams. Man. Weekend and week out. You just
got juggernut matchups. I still really like LSU, but they'm
(28:16):
an old miss. Cass An m even Georgia. They all
got chances in that league. And I tell you what, Man,
You look at ODU schedule the rest of the way.
They're just bunt with man if ole miss and get
through the next two weeks. They could go underseaster. I
can't wait to see what happens real quick with the NFL. Washington, Man,
this is a huge game for Washington and America is
(28:38):
about to meet the Commanders and Jamon Daniels. The next
seven weeks tonight. Through the next seven weeks they are
five five time games and two Games of the Week
four twenty five. It is gonna be crazy. But the
NFT is so deep. I think there are six teams
that are four and two and like two five and one,
Green Bay three, one and one, So they got a key.
(29:00):
They gotta win tonight. If you're up door, Polly, I'll
do a pile of the face, but it's got to
be straight up, no points man. Thank you for taking
them up. The gentleman salute. The commanders.
Speaker 6 (29:09):
Have a great day, all right.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
The Bears are getting five and a half at the Commanders.
How confident do you feel about your bears? Paul, lightly?
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Lightly confident. To be honest, I don't feel great about it.
They can't stop the run and Washington run.
Speaker 4 (29:25):
That's a bad mix, okay.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
I would like to do a bet besides pie of
the face, something saucy with James Mike. I don't know,
you guys, fill in the parameters.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
I'll do the bet.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
Get a tattoo every time. We would do Wheel of
Punishment and be like get a tat too, shave your head, yeah,
see to your face face?
Speaker 14 (29:49):
How about Paul has to do an entire show as
an impression of James of Virginia.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
I don't know how to do that.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Yes, you do a lot of high energy and one breath.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
Love the hair, Dan, it's looking good these days.
Speaker 5 (30:02):
No, you can't believe you went to Maine means and best.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
They don't have good football. Hey, I'm tired, already completely
wiped out.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
And then James has to do a pie to the face. Sure,
I think that's good. Yeah, all right, James, PAULI you'll
take you up on it.
Speaker 21 (30:18):
Oh man.
Speaker 22 (30:19):
Thank you?
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Dan, Nick in La Hi, Nick. What's on your mind today?
Speaker 21 (30:31):
Hey? Dan?
Speaker 2 (30:31):
How's it going?
Speaker 21 (30:32):
Just attacking each day with enthusiasm, know no mankind getting
ready for those pesty underdog Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Today.
Speaker 21 (30:39):
I got two best of the weekends, the Chargers with
their fifth and sixth string offensive tackles and Justin Herbert
looking like Hercules back there with the game winning drive.
Justin Herbert has eighteen game winning drives since twenty twenty,
only behind Patrick Mahobs.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Number two.
Speaker 21 (31:00):
DP has owned Jerry Neuheisel throwing up thirty eight points
yet again, what has gotten into westwid had a great
week's Voice.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
Thank you Nick. Yeah, they roughed up Michigan State. It
was impressive and I think this is the last year
of his contract as the offensive coordinator at UCLA. I'm
guessing Rick's sun is probably going to have an opportunity
to maybe be a head coach after this season. Uh.
(31:28):
Aaron in Virginia, Hi, Eron, went's on your mind today?
Speaker 22 (31:32):
Hey, Happy Monday, DP Danet. I just want to shout
out Virginia. I feel like we've had a lot of
callers from Virginia here recently. The only thing that I
wanted to come in on today is the guy about
two months ago who was keeping tabs of all the
(31:53):
heights and weights coming in.
Speaker 15 (31:55):
I feel like we need to tell the second.
Speaker 22 (31:57):
And third time callers to not say they're heightened weight.
Speaker 9 (32:00):
That's going to skew a results.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Oh yeah, we had the person who gave us the
average height and weight of my listeners. Uh, thank you, Erin.
We'll get some of our best people on it. By
the way, if you're watching on Peacock, our streaming partner,
during the commercial break on radio, we're going to measure
everybody here, myself and the dan nets. We're going to
(32:22):
find out who is six feet tall, who is taller
than six feet who has been lying about their height.
We'll have that coming up during the commercial break. Our
Best and Worst of the weekend also coming up right
after this.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
If you're watching on Peacock. During the commercial break, we
did the official measuring. Who is the tallest? Who is
the shortest? In here? I'm six one and a half.
Marvin is six and a half, six foot and a
half inch, Seating is five eleven and three quarters.
Speaker 23 (33:13):
PAULI is five eleven and a half five eleven and
a half.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
I don't know if I agree with that.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Ooh wait, what I think Paul's taller than that?
Speaker 4 (33:24):
Oh I had a bad day.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
I think you did. You're on it.
Speaker 14 (33:26):
They caught you on a short day, because I think
you're taller than this short day.
Speaker 23 (33:30):
I felt like I was having a short day. You're
having a short day today. You keep your head up,
all right? You got beaten down by the Cubs losing
to the Brewery. So you might be five eleven tomorrow
if the commander is beat down on the bear.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
I literally got beaten down by the Cubs. All right, Yes,
Columbus Day should be a short day for everybody.
Speaker 7 (33:47):
Some people have the whole day left.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
What was your height, Todd?
Speaker 7 (33:50):
I was five ninety three quarters with very thin socks,
and he did not have my chin up his eyes.
Everybody else, Oh, I'm gonna round it off to five
ten in my own head, but yeah, just under five to.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Ten and no hair.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
Yeah, Todd's lack of hair helped hurt his case because
the measurement was, you know, vague with the hair.
Speaker 7 (34:10):
Sys just need an extra quarter inch to get to
five to ten.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Sorry, but you're not there.
Speaker 10 (34:14):
I'm not.
Speaker 7 (34:15):
I'm only gonna get shorter, because that's what happens.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Yes, you're Seaton seems to be getting bigger feet, getting
bigger hands, getting bigger.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 14 (34:22):
Now I'm still just as tall as I was in
high school, which is going to happen.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
That's yeah, that's pretty good, all right. Beast and worst
of the weekend Home version Todd.
Speaker 7 (34:31):
Christ and Syracuse and Cody and Washington beat me to it,
but I'm sticking with it.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
The fifteen inning game.
Speaker 7 (34:35):
Five Alds Tiger's Marinas Friday night in Seattle, a lot
of drama, great pitching by both sides, ended like one
twenty in the morning, and I watched all of it
and it was awesome. Worst well though it was only
their first loss of the year, giving it to the
Oklahoma Sooners, managing a pair of first half field goals
in the Red River rivalry, got outscored twenty nothing in
the second half against an inconsistent Texas team and quarterback
(34:56):
final twenty three six Longhorns.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Trek Scuball pitched unbeliev for the Tigers of the postseason.
Unbelievable man. He brings it. He just pounds the strike
soon and didn't have much the show for it. He
strikes out. It feels like he strikes out two guys
per inning. All right. See invest and worst of the weekend.
Speaker 3 (35:14):
My best of the weekend Drake May future MVP candidate,
question mark question mark.
Speaker 14 (35:20):
A lot's having a breakout season. Good for him, happy
about that. My worst of the weekend is the forty
nine Ers because they may actually be cursed. I'm seeing
that a lot right now from forty nine Ers fans,
but their kicker having his foot stepped on just after
making the kick.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
Good grief, man.
Speaker 14 (35:38):
I bet that was a gigantic foot that stepped on
his big toe.
Speaker 4 (35:41):
I bet that hurt like.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
Hell, man. And the fact that they had that replay
and you just see this no massot and it steps
on kicker's foot. Marvin Best. Worse of the weekend.
Speaker 8 (35:56):
Best of the weekend, our boy Cam Newton getting his
jersey retired by Auburn. He's only the fourth player in
Auburn never get his jersey retired by the school. Worse
of the weekend Florida State. I mean they lost the
pitt after starting three and oh with a big win
against Alabama, They've lost their last three and they're owing
three in the ACC.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
And now all of a sudden, they're back to checking
out the buyout for their head coach. It felt like, Okay,
Florida State's back. You know, we like when Florida State
is back, and then all of a sudden, not so fast.
Paulie bestin worse a.
Speaker 5 (36:29):
Couple undefeated teams not getting to do for my best.
Texas Tech running back Cameron Dickey two hundred and sixty
three yards rushing against the Jayhawks. Texas Tech is six
and oh, no one's talking about them. And then Georgia
Tech football also six and oh. Really nice uniforms, of course,
and they're playing some good football. They have an insuring
schedule coming up, but they finish the season versus Georgia.
Speaker 4 (36:51):
What an opportunity for Georgia Tech.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Fob Yeah, they traditionally end the season against one another.
Keith and Charlotte, Hi, Keith, Best and worst of the weekend?
Speaker 20 (37:03):
Hey, Dan, I have a couple bets, and then kind
of a worst bes I called Friday about the Panthers
taking down the Cowboys. Eventually there are right now. They're
just getting better and better. I'll take it. Next. Best
is my son starting you baseball team winning their first
(37:23):
championship this weekend, which is super sweet. And then the
worst was watching the Panther game while keep them score
on my phone for them, watching a little tiny screen
and cheering for them.
Speaker 15 (37:35):
Just overall, just a really good weekend.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
Go Panthers, all right, Keith? Yeah? Keith was like, Hey,
Panthers against Cowboys, And then all of a sudden I
saw some of the Vegas Sharps, and they liked the
Panthers at home getting three David and Tulsa. Hi David,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 9 (37:55):
Hey Dan?
Speaker 22 (37:56):
Good morning man.
Speaker 6 (37:57):
Got to give my best and worst. Best was Las
Vegas Raiders finely wing one got time, and then I
don't have it worst, But my best is Oklahoma State Cowboys,
even though they got blowed out again the old skin
list the share list section. I'd like to see how
it's gonna look for homecoming in a couple of weeks.
(38:17):
Probably more kids out there. I mean, you know, loyal
and true to the end, I guess, but we'll see
what happens.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Yeah, homecoming, that won't be a pretty picture. Thank you, David.
Uh Brian in Utah, Hi Brian. Best and worst of.
Speaker 15 (38:31):
The weekend, Hey Dan, what a pleasure to talk to you.
Speaker 24 (38:35):
I just love your show, been first time, long time
for a long time, and I just love the chemistry
you guys have there. My best of the weekend is
Utah just destroying Arizona State, and my worst is be
what you escaping by the skin of their teeth but
setting up a really good rivalry game coming up this week.
Speaker 9 (38:52):
Hey, if I've got a couple of seconds.
Speaker 18 (38:54):
I've got a Bill Belichick's song.
Speaker 9 (38:56):
It's very short, but I wanted to share.
Speaker 15 (38:57):
It with you.
Speaker 9 (38:57):
Is that all right?
Speaker 2 (38:58):
Okay? Brian, all right, let's give.
Speaker 9 (39:01):
It a shot here, Todd, you tell me how I
do on this How you used to school the world?
Teams would hide when we took the field.
Speaker 25 (39:10):
Now in the shadow of bread, smile, I cut the
grass that used to bow. I hear Keenan stadium's bells
are ring and looking to bring us all back to
when and sure we should.
Speaker 26 (39:25):
He's could strike with you like in New England, and
yes to you. For some reason, I can't explain. When
I'm in a living room, my face doesn't change. It
doesn't seem to help racruit a skid to school the world.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
All right, Brian, thank you a little cold play.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
I'm in a living room, my fingers and change.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
I don't know why he's asking Todd about how well
he's singing.
Speaker 7 (39:54):
I was gonna say, I love the efforts, but similar
to my singing voice is probably something best red than performing.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Keith and Tampa, Hi, Keith, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 18 (40:04):
Hit In five nine seventy, Calling In, Calling In with
the start of the day for you guys. Baker Mayfield
yesterday became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw
two seventy yard touchdowns and two forty yard touchdowns in
consecutive weeks. Just wanted to drop that tidbit on the
(40:27):
guys letter.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
Thank you. Baker had a great run in that game,
great run and he was not going to be denied.
He also got hit. Uh he had thrown a touchdown pass,
but he took a hit from the dB and got
up and was clapping. And you know, people, I think
it's weird. He was the number one pick in the draft,
but we treat him like he was a fourth round
(40:49):
draft pick. Like, man, look at him. He's doing pretty well.
He was the number one pick in the draft. It's
like when Jared Goff plays well, We're like, man, that's
a good story. He was the number one pick in
the draft. We forget, yes, Martin.
Speaker 4 (41:02):
Like, look, he could be MVP.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
He's a number one pick of the draft.
Speaker 8 (41:05):
The goal was for him to be MVP.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Alrighty two hours in the books on this Monday, more
phone calls coming up, best and worst of the weekend.
John Smoltz on loan from Fox Will stop by. He'll
preview the baseball games coming up tonight. Two hours in
the books, only one more to go with Fritzy Seat
and Mark Paully and Yours truly on The Dan Patrick Show.
