Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hour two on this Friday, it's a meat Friday. At
that it's kind of a brunch Friday, as we have
bacon and egg and cheese sliders, sausage sliders, we have
locks in bagel sliders with cream cheese and spicy bloody Mary's.
Who has it better than we do?
Speaker 3 (00:22):
No body.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
By the way, we do not indulge, you know, we
do imbibe with the bloody Mary's until after the show.
Just letting you know. It may sound like we have been,
you know, dipping into the spicy bloody Mary's, but not
that's that's till after the show. Todd. I know you
like to sneak a little of us. Sit there, a
little nip there.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
I came very close to grabbing a slider, all right.
I did not.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
No, no, yeah, you can't do that, and can't grab
the bloody mary either.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I forgot that. Cameras all over the place, that's the problem.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yes, I can see everything, Todd, I can see everything.

say good morning to our radio affiliates around the country.
iHeartRadio and Fox Sports Radio. Poll question from our one,
and what are we going to go with an hour
(01:14):
two Seaton? Yeah, we put two of them up there.
For our one.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
We had Todds let's not overthink it pole question, and
we also have Pescal Siakam saying they played harder. It
was a throwaway line or embarrassing to admit. Right now,
about sixty seven percent of the audience have that as
a throwaway line. Nobody's taken that too serious. And then
a more iconic place to play basketball New York City
or the state of Indiana. The state of Indiana's got
(01:42):
about fifty five percent of that vote. Okay, the common
thought seems to be that New York is more famous,
Indiana is more like heart and soul kind of thing,
where it's like basketball is more like a religion, say
in Indiana. But there's really no better place, say the
more famous place to cut your chops to New York City,
if that makes sense.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
All right, all right, I'll buy that. Yeah, I could
see that. Yeah. Well, if you're a Pacer fan, your
level of concern is what after last night because it.
You know, I think we thought, Okay, Indiana can go
and they can win there. They won there before, and
the Knicks haven't been a great home team in the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
So.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
That kind of quickly diminished because Brunson and Karl Anthony
Towns were wonderful. Here is Nick's head coach, Tom Thibodeau
on his two stars.
Speaker 5 (02:40):
I thought he was very aggressive, and I think that's
super important.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
I think jailing as well.
Speaker 5 (02:45):
I thought the first quarter, let's ht the tone for
the game. We got to make sure that we stay aggressive.
Then we have to stay disciplined. I think staying disciplined
and playing with toughness is huge.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
And it felt like the Pacers were going to the
end finals after last game.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Right.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
That's where it comes with your level of concern if
you're a Pacer fan, or your level of confidence if
you're a Nick fan, because you're probably thinking, hey, the
way we played, if we can play that way in Indiana,
we come back in our building and we can still
win this, which of course they can. They're four point underdogs.
That'll be Saturday night in Indianapolis.
Speaker 6 (03:23):
Yes, Paul, if the Pacers this is kind of almost
rhetorical but if the Pacers win in the next game,
clean win, the egg laid by Tyres Hliverton is completely
forgotten forever.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Correct?
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah? Probably? What if it goes the other way?
Speaker 6 (03:38):
What if all the month of goodwill that he's built,
he's built himself into a star where people are picking
him over Anthony Edwards now for the future of the
NBA and other players. But if he somehow doesn't pull
this off because it is him, how does it go?
Speaker 2 (03:55):
I think that we'll look at him the way we
do Anthony Edwards. Of maybe he's not there yet. Jalen
Brunson is there, Like Jalen Brunson is that guy? And
you saw that last night he somehow, some way and
he not afraid and that was an impressive performance. And
these are tough shots, you know, because he's not a
(04:17):
big guy, and you got, you know, these long, long
armed guys who are you know, trying to disrupt that shot.
But he hit big, big, big shots. And so did
Karl Anthony Towns who has a bad knee but seemed
pretty mobile last night. But yeah, you can wipe away
a bad playoff game with a playoff clinching win that
(04:38):
that would be important for Tyreese Haliburton, and I know
we love to fast track players like who's the next,
you know, and we did that with Anthony Edwards. I
think he's really talented. I just don't think he's ready yet,
but he will be. He's only twenty three. And the
same thing with Tyrese Haliburton. Nobody knew him. I mean
he played this way before. It just now people are
(05:00):
seeing him and they're like, oh man, is he a superstar?
Is he a top ten player? He's the same player.
It's just more people are now watching. Therefore more people
have an opinion. Yes.
Speaker 7 (05:11):
Mark.
Speaker 8 (05:12):
In the NBA, we normally do the same thing. Is
a young, exciting player. Oh man, I love his game.
I love watching him. He has a fall short a
little bit in the playoffs. Man, when's he going to
start winning some championships? Time is taking. It always happens.
It's going to happen to more guys.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, And we saw that with Giannis, We saw that
with Joker. It's like, I he want MVPs, you better
start winning championships now. Tyrese Haliburton not going to be
an MVP, but you know, if he is up at
this level, then he might get into that, and it's
a great category to get in. We expect you to
win a championship. Anthony Edwards is probably in there too soon.
(05:50):
Luca got to an NBA finals, but he's still going
to be facing that. When are you going to be?
How can you be an all time great if you
don't win championships? We put that label on you a
lot sooner than we used to. All Right, pull, question
for hour two is going to be what Seaton?
Speaker 4 (06:06):
Yeah, we got Let's see, we got three of them
working right now. Paul just sent one over to and
which team sport would it be the easiest to play
professionally at the age of forty or older? Basketball, Baseball, football, hockey, other.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
The easiest, the easiest to be forty years of age?
Speaker 6 (06:29):
Paul, Yeah, bas this off Corey Perry, the hockey player
still playing well at forty football other than quarterback, has
it been done other than quarterback in the NFL?
Speaker 2 (06:41):
And kicker?
Speaker 6 (06:42):
I'm removing that as a position player like Darryl Green
of the Washington Redskins, Jerry Rice, they were forty or approaching. Yeah,
but it seems in football it's only quarterback, right Baseball?
Speaker 2 (06:56):
How common.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
Me?
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Maybe a pitcher, right, I mean pitching. As long as
your arm stays intact, you should be able to do that.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
First first base a little bit. You could be kind
of a big guy sitting there at first base and
just you know, catch the ball that's thrount you by
the infield. Gotta been down once in a while for
a groundball.
Speaker 8 (07:14):
Y'all go baseball, because you see a lot of those guys,
the Willie Mayses and Hank Aaron's stay unusual. Those guys
play for twenty seasons.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Yeah. Satchel Page was I think in his fifty when
he was pitching. Yeah, let's see basketball would be pretty
tough because that's a young man's game. Yeah, explosive baseball, Yeah, pitching,
I could see that. You know Phil Nekro, he was
in his forties, knuckleball pitcher. Let me see football now,
(07:46):
unless you're a kicker or a quarterback, I don't see it.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yes to some kind of group play match play golf.
Speaker 9 (07:51):
I know that's we're kind of thinking of individual sport,
but there is groups that play golf together.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
No team sport, Yeah, but it's a team sport.
Speaker 9 (07:58):
But if you're in the Ryder Cup in your forty
four and you could still hit the ball whell Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
But we were just talking about these sports, okay, because
we could do bowling if you wanted.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
To sixty year old bowlers out there.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
I know, stay on the topic. You had a great
first hour.
Speaker 9 (08:17):
Just baseball, basketball, football, and hockey or other team sports.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Is there anything else you want?
Speaker 9 (08:26):
Certain relay races if it's not that far, maybe a
fourty year old can get around the track.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
No, no, no, no, okay, I think we got a
poll question today. I think for at least for this hour,
we'll check in with Corey Alexander, former player. He is
working for ESPN Radio. He'll join us coming up in
a little bit. Who had the best week in sports?
We'll have that for you as well. Ross Tucker from
Westwood One will stop by. We spent a little time
(08:52):
yesterday talking about who has the most pressure going into
this football season as we are now ninety eight days
away from the start of the NFL season.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
Oh, it's one closer.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
I know. I'm surprised the Mothership doesn't have a countdown
where they just put ninety eight up in the corner
and then ninety Why don't we do that? An actual clock. Yeah,
just now, I don't want to do our. I don't
want to do day, hour, any of that. Minutes and seconds. Yeah,
I think we should.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
I think it should be like an actual running clock
that counts down thousands of hours.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Marvin, are you capable? Do you know people who could
do that for me?
Speaker 10 (09:33):
Here?
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Fair question.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Yeah, one of the backroom guys should be able to
do this where we put the count down to kickoff. Oh,
there you go, yes, Tod.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Once again, to show the power of the NFL over
any other sport?
Speaker 9 (09:48):
Is there any other sport you can possibly even remotely
consider having a countdown of one hundred days or less.
Speaker 6 (09:53):
I'm going to answer that Noah, yes, bo you guys
find yourself And again this is a fritzy question when
football season ends, thinking yourself, what am I going to
do on weekends? What am I going to do on
Mondays and Thursday nights? Like it's hard to picture the
offseason when you're in football season. Like the amount of
(10:13):
free time football fans now have. I know there's other sports,
but it doesn't fill it the same way college football
on Saturday, it's like a fourteen hour session.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Well, I just need to get through the month of February,
Like once the Super Bowl is over, get through February
and then you get you know, kind of leaving winter,
and then there's baseball, basketball, you have you know, you
have some things going on. You know, you almost need
to exhale, You got to re energize. I think the
football season is a lot that just you know, wall
(10:44):
to wall once the season starts with games and then coverage.
You know, if you're in fantasy, if you're gambling, any
of those things. It's a lot, a lot of mental grind.
But somehow we do it every single year. We somehow
plow our way through it. Hashtag warrior. A couple of
phone calls in here Jay and Delaware. Hi Jay, what's
(11:07):
on your mind today?
Speaker 11 (11:10):
Hey, good morning Dan. First off, congrats on the new
addition to the family.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Thank you.
Speaker 11 (11:15):
First thing, First thing, Todd, like you said, had a
great first hour. Two blops in the first half hour.
I think Todd, you should just grab a slider and
go and head home. Don't want you to ruin it
for the rest of the day, Bud. And secondly, I
went to Piggyback off of the Tier Talk from yesterday.
Absolutely loved it. My top five Tier one pressure. I
(11:38):
feel like our Giants, especially Dable and Shane. Secondly Dolphins,
Mike McDaniel, that whole staff. They've got to get into
the playoffs. They've got to at least make it to
the divisional round. Third, the forty nine ers. I'm a
Niners fan, but with all the off season changes this year,
I think this fan base is gonna get a lot
louder than it already is. Where I sa Hannah leantri concern. Fourth,
(12:01):
I'm surprised nobody brought it up. Dak Prescott. I think
Jerry Jones is going to get very impatient if they
don't make it past the divisional round, first round, second
round exits. I think I think Jerry's getting think Jerry's
gonna get fed up with it. And Fifth, I think
it's Trevor Lawrence with all the everything that you guys
said yesterday, Thanks guys, having met Friday, Thank you Jay.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Dak Prescott has a contract, so I mean, what options
does Jerry have. He had an option to not offer
him that contract, but he did so. I is there pressure?
You got a new head coach in there, you haven't
paid Michael Parsons yet. How good are they going to be.
(12:45):
I think Vegas has the over under at seven and
a half. I mean, they could be another seven and
ten season there, But I don't they should have moved
on from DAK. I thought before they gave him this contract.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Yes, we're saying over under week six and a half
of a Joe Milton sighting.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
In Dallas. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Yeah, he's been lighting it up in Dallas. Of course
he's got a cannon. Heck, yeah, let's go down rooting
against Dak. But man, I would love to see Joe
Milton get a shot.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
Yes, Paul, I'm gonna to differ with this caller about
the Tier one pressure on the New York Giants coaching staff.
They were shockingly brought back last year at three and fourteen.
They're clearly going to win, you know, three or four
more games this year. They kind of made their bed
the Giants that they're sticking with this coaching staff. Last
year would have been the year.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
To move on.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
I don't know what they're doing. I think it's Tier
two pressure. Yeah, Okay, everybody's gonna Philly is gonna get
the headline. The Commanders get the headlines. Dallas always gets headlines.
You know, the Giants can kind of live you know,
off campus here a little bit where they might not
get as much you know, focus, there'll be local pressure
(13:57):
on them. But then you don't know what the Jets
are going to do. But as far as Dallas, I
don't mean I don't have great expectations. They feel like
they're middle of the pack here. But I don't know
if Jerry, I mean, what's he gonna do. You're going
to find your quarterback? Where are you going to find
your quarterback? And I don't know what. He's on the
(14:19):
hook with Dak for how many years? But that's a mess.
And we talked about you would have thought that it
was a good financial mess when you when you go, okay,
you got Dak, ced Lamb and Michael Parsons. These are
all great players. I mean, Michael Parsons could be the
best defensive player in the game. CD Lamb is what
top five wide receiver.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
Now.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Dak is just a good quarterback at times he's been
really good, but he's what thirty two injury prone. Never
would have given him that kind of contract. I would have.
I would have franchised, you know, just do it one
more ye prove yourself. Let me see, but I never
would have given him that contract.
Speaker 6 (15:00):
Yeah, Paul Prescott's contract is set for the next three
years twenty twenty five season, twenty six and twenty seven.
They cannot The best they could get out of him
would be after the twenty twenty sixth season with a
major dead cap hit. He's their quarterback for the next
three years if healthy.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I don't have I mean, we
could play with you and toy with you and say,
you know, let's talk about the cowboy I talk about
them when you know it's brought up to me or
there's something that has changed, but nothing's changed. Yeah, Dak
being healthy, okay, ceedee lamb.
Speaker 10 (15:35):
You know.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Now I have a couple of receivers there. But I
you know, remember Jerry was all in. I don't know
what you know. All in meant to Jerry kind of
I'm all in to do nothing is sort of what
it played out. Eddie in Utah, Hi Eddie, what's on
your mind?
Speaker 7 (15:54):
Hey Dan, thanks for calling me back. Appreciate it. So
you guys on the topic of it, and you guys,
uh form meet Friday. You guys played Todd run Gren
and you guys are Connecticut based and Todd run Grin's
from Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Oh okay, so I see what you're saying that we
shouldn't be able to play Todd run Gren accurate.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
Okay, looks like it's gonna be John Mayer song. Then
I guess who else have we got in Connecticut.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
To their daughters?
Speaker 4 (16:28):
I gotta sing that, yeah, I mean, the good news
is we can keep the original stat of the day
music that's from Connecticut.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Josta's from Connecticut. Hate Breed from Connecticut.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
That's good.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Okay, yes, Todd, Michael Bolton can't sleep on Michael Bolton.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
That'll pump you up. Yeah, Michael Bolton going through some
health issues.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Hopefully he is on the on the men there rebounding,
we get Moby. Moby is from Connecticut. I'll take I'll
take mobs. Just push play, Yeah, is that what it is?
Push play or just I think it's just play, just play,
but I'm not.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
Sure it might be push play.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
Yes, Pauline, Connecticut may have the bands that are at
least conducive to pump up songs. Liz Fair, John Mayer,
The Carpenters, Michael Bolton, damn that's not getting you ready
for the seventh anic.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
No, no, yes, Todd.
Speaker 12 (17:23):
You may ask yourself if talking Heads is on that
list and they are from Connecticut, they are from Rhode Island.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
I'm looking at Connecticut. I must be looking at the
nage Connecticut musicians. Talking Heads.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
Okay, once again, no one associates them with Rhode Island
or Connecticut. It's one hundred percent of New York City.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
You had a good first hour, Todd. Okay, gotta do
better with the research. Keep your head up. Okay, all right,
come on, all right, all right, let me take a break.
We will revisit the game last night, look ahead to
Saturday's game six. Brian Cranston, the great actor, will join us.
Ross Tucker, our good buddy from west Wood One, and

Speaker 2 (19:13):
That's Covino and Rich Nixon Pacers Saturday Night in Indiana.
The Knicks are four point underdogs. Corey Alexander been doing
a great job calling the action on ESPN Radio he's
a college basketball analyst as well, played seven seasons in
the NBA, and he'll continue his coverage tomorrow night, Game six,
(19:34):
starting at seven thirty Eastern on the mother Ship. Corey,
the level of concern for Pacer fans Pacer players is
what in your opinion?
Speaker 14 (19:45):
I believe it's probably about a five on a scale
of one to ten right now, Dan, And the reason
being is because you know, Tyres Halliburton was so lackadaisically
and the last night's game, and it's something that we've
seen from Tyre's.
Speaker 10 (19:58):
Halliburton throughout his play all career.
Speaker 14 (20:00):
The last two seasons, and you don't there's no reason.
There's really no rhythm to it. It's just some days
he's not the same player. Especially coming off of historic
performance thirty two, fifteen and twelve with zero turnovers. In
Game five, you would expect it to see him be
more aggressive on the road.
Speaker 10 (20:18):
They didn't see that, But I do.
Speaker 14 (20:20):
Believe he will see it tomorrow night in Game six,
which that's why the concern is only a five.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
I don't know if this is a big deal. It
felt like somebody was or some people are trying to
make it a big deal. Pascal Siakam postgame said they
played harder than the Pacers, like you can say they
executed better, but in a Game five with a chance
to go to the NBA Finals, a team played harder
than you.
Speaker 10 (20:45):
But it was the case.
Speaker 14 (20:46):
He told the truth, and oftentimes you know that that's
the thing we asked players to be honest.
Speaker 10 (20:51):
He told the truth, and the mix did play harder.
The misplayed with a sense.
Speaker 14 (20:54):
Of urgency and a sense of desperation, and the Pacers
played as though they knew they had another opportunity to
be able to close it out on their home floor
in the game six, and Pascal Siakam was spot on.
Speaker 10 (21:04):
The Knicks did play harder. It may not be something.
Speaker 14 (21:07):
That you want to hear from your teammate in the
locker room, but at the same time, everybody in the
locker room that was part of that game could look
at each other at high and say it's absolute truth.
Speaker 10 (21:15):
The nixt day'll play harder than we did tonight.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Tougher to defend Haliburton or Brunson.
Speaker 14 (21:22):
Tougher to defend Brunton. And the reason being is because bruntson,
regardless of the whether he's making shots, he's missing shots,
whatever may be. He is constantly going to stay aggressive.
He's going to continue to come at you every opportunity
he gets. And more importantly, Jleb Brunson, it doesn't matter
who's on the floor, he'd be playing with Michael Jordan.
And when it's all said and done, when Jaylen Brunton
steps on the basketball court, he thinks he's the best
(21:44):
player on the court, and.
Speaker 10 (21:46):
He was last night.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Yeah, I'm fascinated by just his style. It's relentless. He
just keeps coming, you know, it's all it's always going
forward and I love that. I just don't know the rest.
You know. Karl Anthony Towns played pretty well. Seemed pretty
mobile for a guy that was you know, I guess
had a questionable knee going into that game last night.
Speaker 10 (22:10):
Yeah, he was very mobile.
Speaker 14 (22:11):
And when you consider Carl Anthony Towns and he really
gets his opportunities to start the second quarter, start the
fourth quarter when Jalen Brunt it's on the bench. But
with the new starting lineup that Timms has employed over
the last three games, Jalen doesn't have as much spacing,
which makes the three point field goal so much more
important for him. He got off to a hot start,
knocking down threes in that first quarter. Fourteen first quarter points.
(22:34):
I believe he had sixteen in the third quarter. I'm
not sure if he scored in the second or the fourth,
but when you think about the second the fourth along
the cat they have a great rotation in the way
that they're doing things offensively, and it worked in game five.
The problem is the Pacers know that. Will it be
able to work for the Knicks in Game six on
the road?
Speaker 2 (22:53):
Why is it you think we in the media tried
to fast track somebody to be face to the pace
of the sport or the next great players. Is he
a superstar? A lot of these players we're talking about
are twenty three to twenty seven years of age. It's like,
we don't give you that grace period before. You know,
(23:17):
Michael Jordan had a grace period, and you know Bird
and Magic everybody kind of got a grace period. We
don't let these younger players now and like Cooper Flagg
coming in, how long is his grace period before we say,
I don't know, can you win win a title here?
Why do we do it?
Speaker 14 (23:33):
We do it because and Dan, you've been in this
industry much longer than I have believed it or not.
Speaker 10 (23:37):
I was with you in the gym. I believe it's.
Speaker 14 (23:40):
Concord Athletic Club back in San Antonio getting shots up
back in the day.
Speaker 10 (23:43):
So you've been doing this for a long time.
Speaker 14 (23:45):
And the difference is I can say that my company,
you know, or our company be it at Disney, is
going to pay two point eight billion dollars next year
for rights at the NBA, which means that it's not
about the games, it's about content. And so from seven
am to eleven pm, you have to talk about the game,
(24:06):
and therefore there have to be things to talk about.
That's the difference in today's game in comparison to when
I was playing in the NBA. And even before we're
talking about there has to be some type of conversation
to keep the viewers watching and keep them off of
social media and keep them watching TV. So when you
think about that, that's the reason why, and again it's constant,
(24:27):
and not only that, but these guys don't necessarily care.
Speaker 10 (24:30):
About being the face of the NBA anymore.
Speaker 14 (24:32):
The reason being is because when Michael Jordan was playing,
then you had to be the face of the NBA
to become a billionaire.
Speaker 10 (24:38):
With these contracts.
Speaker 14 (24:39):
Now you don't have to be Anthony Evers can be
a billionaire without being the face of the NBA after
just three contracts and of course everything that he gets
off the court.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Talking to Corey Alexander, ESPN Radio, an list and he'll
be calling game six on the Mothership. That'll be at
seven thirty eastern on Saturday. How was my jumper? By
the way, and Sen Antonio, I.
Speaker 14 (25:01):
Am calling to vouch for you, my man. You actually
can shoot the basketball. I believed it was Bennye del
Dagro in there with you. I'm not sure you had
another one of your anchors, maybe Oberman. I know it
was a Steward Scott, but well, I think it was
maybe Overman with you, and it was Benny del Negro myself.
I'm not sure Dale Dimps I know was in there.
But you can shoot the basketball. Man. If anybody ever questions,
(25:22):
ite them to come see me. I've seen it with
my own two eyes. You were knocking down shots that day.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Thank you. I appreciate that. And you're a great journalist,
is what you are. I think I'm a better deep
shooter than Vinnie del Negro. Vinnie was a great fifteen
to eighteen feet, but he didn't come out to where
grown men shoot.
Speaker 10 (25:41):
Vinnie was a master of the mid range. That was
his game. But I agree, and I used to talk
to him all the time in practice. I was like,
come on, o here in the deep water, get out
of kiddie poole.
Speaker 14 (25:50):
He wanted, no problem with that, But in the kiddie pool,
he's one of the best to ever do it.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Best shooter you ever faced.
Speaker 10 (25:57):
The best shooter I've ever faced. Pooh.
Speaker 14 (26:02):
I'm gonna go as far as to say his name
is now mak Mood ab dul Rohu.
Speaker 10 (26:07):
He was once Chris Jackson, but you're talking about one
of the best of the best. And again, the dude
was relentless. He had the best touch.
Speaker 14 (26:16):
You know, he was so locked in on making every
possible shot and it was so quick, honestly. And again,
you know, Steph Curry's my nephew, will love him to death.
Del's like a big brother to be. Chris Jackson was
Steph Curry before Steph Curry.
Speaker 10 (26:30):
The way the.
Speaker 14 (26:30):
Game has changed has allowed for Steph Curry to be
able to do what he's doing.
Speaker 10 (26:36):
If you couldn't handcheck Chris Jackson.
Speaker 14 (26:39):
Make Muda ab Dul Rohu if you couldn't be physical
with him the way that the game is played now,
I'm not saying that he would have been Steph, but
he would have been very close to what we've seen
Steph do over the last ten years.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
You want to talk about getting a shot off, like,
you know, when when he would his handle was wonderful,
and when he was at LSU and he was average
thirty a game, you know we didn't You had Shaq
and Stanley Roberts, but the best player was you know,
six feet tall in Chris Jackson. But in today's game,
you imagine today's game with Chris, you know, just so
(27:12):
quick at getting that shot off.
Speaker 14 (27:15):
So quick at getting a shot off, was so quick
in general because as you mentioned, to handle it. Then
he hit me with a between it last crossover one time,
but I watched it on the Jumbo Trot and I
went off the screen completely. You couldn't even find me
and he just absolutely lost me. But the thing is
in that era and we're going back to this is
(27:36):
ninety six, my rookie year. Playing against him, you had
to be able to defend, and that's the reason why
he didn't get as many minutes, He didn't get as
many opportunities because he struggled defensively in today's game where
they often find ways to hide guys who lack of
a defensive end and you can keep them on the
floor for thirty five to forty minutes. If he had
(27:56):
that type of I mean, he had that type of time.
And as you talked about that grace period, I mean
again we talked, he still talking.
Speaker 10 (28:03):
About one to all time breaks.
Speaker 5 (28:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
Mark Price is another player who had an unbelievably just
go up quick and you know he would average twenty ten.
You know there's a lot of those. Kevin Johnson was
another twenty ten guy there. Just felt like, you know,
that's what you had to do back then, that's when
you had true point guards. But then Steph became a
points guard instead. You know, like he created his own
(28:30):
label there. Did you have your Welcome to the NBA moment?
Speaker 14 (28:34):
I had a lot of them, And when you just
missed those names, Mark Price, Kevin Johnson, I started getting
flashbacks from all those guys having to deal with but
my welcome to the NBA moment. Believe that I came
in preseason my rookie year, and I was playing against
Tim Hardaway at Utah, so a preseason game at Utah,
and of course I watched so much all home court.
(28:56):
I watched so much Tim Hardaway growing up and playing.
And before game, you know, I'm a fan. I walked
up to him and I said, hey, don't hit me
with that, and he said, don't worry about the course,
you don't have to be concerned. But watch what I
do to Avery, and he pought that put out a
new move for Avery in that game. Of course, those
two guys had history for being with them workers together,
(29:17):
and after he.
Speaker 10 (29:17):
Hit Avery with the move that pretty much fun Avery
in the circle.
Speaker 14 (29:20):
He just looked over Breton and gave me a wink,
and I knew I might be in for trouble in
this league from that point on.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Does it matter who wins the East? When you look
at OKC and how good they've been regular season, postseason, I.
Speaker 14 (29:35):
Do think it matters, And the reason being is because
as good as OKC has been, they are the best
team in the NBA. They have the best player right
now in the NBA and in SGA. But the Indiana
Pacers can give them a handful. They can give them
everything they want, and the reason being is because Indiana
(29:56):
as a team is just as deep as are the
Thunder and they would absolutely make that a series. I'm
not sure if it would be a great series if
they're going up against the Knicks, because the Knicks are
so front loaded, But when you.
Speaker 10 (30:11):
Think about going one through twelve, the Pacers are right there.
They don't have the star that the.
Speaker 14 (30:18):
Thunder have in Sga, but from a depth standpoint, they
can match him totals up.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
And I know it sounds blasphemous to say this, but
Sga has a game. He can lead the league in
scoring multiple years. And you know, the last time Iversen
was like that, obviously, Jordan was like, there aren't a
lot of guys that you go every year like he
could lead the league in scoring the next five years.
I wouldn't be surprised at all. But he doesn't. There's
(30:47):
no highlights, really, it's just it's methodical. I'm coming at you,
and it may be mid range jumpers, it may be layups,
but that's it. No threes, but it's pretty dominating in
a quiet way.
Speaker 10 (31:02):
I think it really is.
Speaker 14 (31:04):
And the reason why I think that he won't end
up being a guy that leads the league in scoring
for the next few years is because he's becoming an
even better playmaker. And one of the things that Shade
said early I had the chances my first TV game,
believed when I was in Oklahoma City this year and
Mark Dignoff told us that Shade has come into this
season with intent on empowering his teammates because he wants
(31:28):
to make sure that they are prepared when he gets.
Speaker 10 (31:30):
The playoffs, and it has worked.
Speaker 14 (31:32):
You've seen what j Jaalen Williams has done, You've seen
what Chet has done. You consider a team that has
really jailed around their superstar. But more importantly, each and
every one of those guys has had better and career years.
Even though he continues to lead a league in scoring,
and now you see him becoming much more facilitator and playmaker.
I think he's only going to get better over these
(31:54):
next few years.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
We came up with a new category. It's not whole
of theme, but of great so like Jamal Crawford, Joe Johnson,
you know the guys who aren't Hall of Famers, but
they're right there. So do you have a nominee for
the Hall of great.
Speaker 10 (32:13):
I can give you a bunch of them.
Speaker 14 (32:14):
I'll start with Rip Hamilton and I got a chance
to see Riff at the you know euybl event last weekend.
He's a guy that I'm not sure if he'll get
into the Hall of Fame, but he is absolutely great.
You think about Larry Johnson and you can look at
the Knick sideline alone, to the people showing up the treell' spree, well,
Alan Houston. You go down the list of guys who
(32:35):
have been there, just the Knick Stakes alone, that I've
been fortunate to be able to hang out with for
the last couple of days in this series. All those
guys are in that area. They've been all stars and
at the same time may not be Hall of famers,
but you know, you cannot duplicate what those guys were
able to do, especially in the era in which.
Speaker 10 (32:54):
They were able to do it.
Speaker 14 (32:55):
And you take each and every one of those guys
and you transplant them into today's era, that scoring average
goes up five to sixty one points per game, that
efficiency goes up, and now you're talking about guys who
are Hall of Fame players.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Anybody scare you when you played.
Speaker 10 (33:11):
I mean Michael Jordan.
Speaker 14 (33:13):
I mean, but other than that, No, But you know,
the first time I met Mike then we were at
a game is called the World's Greatest Pickup Game in Greensboro,
North Carolina. His agent, Fred Whitfield, we used to put
it on and you walk in the room and the
first time you see Mike, it's that horror around him.
Speaker 10 (33:31):
But one thing about Michael Jordan, he.
Speaker 14 (33:33):
Doesn't let to look at him like that because he
immediately starts talking trash to you, and he knows all
of your history, of your background or whatever may be.
So he basically welcomes people by talking trash to them.
And all of a sudden, now you open up, you're
having this debate with Michael Jordan. You walk away from
there thinking yourself, Wow, I just got a chance to
talk to Michael Jordan. But when it's all said and done,
(33:54):
when you got to see him in a Chicago twenty three,
it was a different world. And again, like just to
see the way that the community showed up and cheered
for him, even against you on home games.
Speaker 10 (34:05):
Et cetera.
Speaker 7 (34:06):
That would be the only guy.
Speaker 14 (34:07):
And I think that's really during my time of covering
the NBA that's really incited fear into anyone, and that
includes any player today. I mean, he's the only guy
that I thought that people actually fear great.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
To talk to you. Let's do this again. Have fun
on Saturday. Safe travels to Indiana.
Speaker 10 (34:25):
Sounds good man, Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
That's Corey Alexander, ESPN Radio analyst. Be working for the
Mothership Game six and start coverage at seven thirty Eastern.
Take a break. When we come back the best week
in sports. We'll have our nominees more of your phone
calls as well. We're back after this.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio a app.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
It may not happen this upcoming season, but March is
in twenty twenty six, you might see seventy two to
seventy six teams in the field. There are conversations going
on right now with the NCAA, and also they're TV
partners which includes CBS, and that would be expanding the tournament,
(35:17):
which is something that I told you about a while ago,
that I'd gotten word that they might go to seventy
six but they probably would do seventy two, and then
the next step would be to go to seventy six.
They're always going to add, they'll never subtract. There's so
much money at stake. That's why, you know, when people
were kicking and screaming about going from national title game
(35:38):
to now having four teams in there, to now you
have twelve they got to twelve, they were like, well,
why don't we get to sixteen? Because everybody realized that
there's billions of dollars at stake here, and that's what
everybody is, you know, trying to find a chair to sit.
You know, when the music stops, you want to have
a chair to sit. And you go, okay, we're going
to be able to make money. You know, the SEC.
(36:00):
I could see the SEC. Now it's not going to happen,
but I could see the SEC saying to the rest
of college football, you know what, we'll just have our
own league. The heck with you guys, We'll just do it.
We'll keep all the money that we make, and uh,
you know, we're the best league. People want to watch us.
And if you don't let us get a certain number
(36:22):
of schools into the playoffs, I mean, Greg sank you'll
probably join us next week. The commissioner of the SEC,
I mean, he's trying to be very pragmatic about this,
but he also has to be fair to you know,
his teams, to his conference of we got the best conference.
Why are you know, are you going to limit the
number of teams that we can have in here? Shouldn't
(36:42):
we get an automatic whatever it is? And I think
that's where we're headed with college football, that you're going
to go to a sixteen team playoff schedule coming up
in twenty twenty six, and I think they're going to
expand March badness as well.
Speaker 6 (36:56):
Yeah, poem, I have a quick pie to the face
bet off the possible nca basket expansion. WHOA, I'm going
to say it will not happen when we do this show.
Let's say a year from today, it still has been
not been approved and there will not be a expansion
of the college basketball tournament.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
Does anybody anybody want a piece of that pie with
the face expansion? It will not be expanded, I'm saying.
So the side of the bet we would have to
take is that it will expand.
Speaker 6 (37:24):
And never one expects it to. I think the sentiment
is against it, and the networks are not going to
come to an agreement.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
I just think it means more, you know, play in
games that you know first four, that you just load
up those first two like Tuesday and Wednesday, you just
load them up. Nobody's going to go too many games
at the start. I mean, the only people who would
complain is when you fill out your brackets. Do you
have to fill out your brackets and include those games
(37:51):
as well? That I think people are fine with it.
It's just, you know what, a couple exter teams and
a couple extra games. I don't see any downside too it.
Speaker 5 (38:02):
Now.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
I didn't want it to expand to this many to
begin with. I'd still like it to have a certain
number that you know, it's hard to get in, it's
hard to win. Now everybody gets in. But I think
they'll expand. I don't know if they'll expand next year,
but they will. By the time we're done with this show,
I think they will have gotten to seventy two, if
(38:23):
not seventy six. By the way, we're going to slide
into the weekend, and that's brought to you by King Sawaiian.
They want you to welcome summer and Slider's perfect meal.
We're having sliders today for our brunch our meat Friday.
Get ready for summer grilling season. Go to the bakery
or deli section and be your local grocery store and
pick up the irresistible Kings Hawaiian rolls and slider buttons
(38:46):
and enjoy so Sliding into the weekend, Nick Pacers Game
six and Knicks are getting four Yankees at the Dodgers. Hmm,
that's spicey, that's tasty, that is really nice. Theregers who
still think have the best record in baseball at the Royals.
And Terry Scooble he is supposed to be on the
(39:09):
bump for the Tigers. He of course when his second
cy young, I believe, No, he had the triple crown
is what he is. Yeah, he has won, but he's
a huge favorite to win his second. Saya the Memorial Turner,
that's Jack's tournament. Jack a little frosty. It sounded like
that Roy McElroy not playing, and nobody told Jack. He
(39:30):
didn't tell Jack that he wasn't playing in the memorial.
And all of those great players, they always, you know,
they acknowledge Jack, and you try to play in the memorial.
How about the WNBA sky at the Wings, Paige Beckers,
she's averaging fourteen and six. I saw where Diana Tarassi said.
(39:50):
When it's all said and done, Paige Beckers will be
the best player in the WNBA. She's a great player.
I don't know if she's going to be the best
player in the WNBA, but off to a pretty good
start there, all right. Who had the best week in sports? Todd?
I'll start with you.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
You mentioned them a few times earlier in the show.
Speaker 12 (40:12):
Carl Anthony Towns in games two through five vers the
Pacers starting last Friday, twenty points, twenty four, twenty four,
and twenty four. Again in games three through five, fifteen,
twelve and thirteen boards.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
Cat is my guy?
Speaker 2 (40:25):
Seton O'Connor, the best week in sports?
Speaker 4 (40:29):
You know who Luke Humphreys is. Luke Humphreys. Luke Humphries. Okay, no,
Luke Space Humphries. Yeah, not Luke Coumphries. No, not Luke Humphreys. No, Okay,
that'd be un fortunate. It is Luke Space Humphries.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
Okay. I think I've seen one of his movies.
Speaker 4 (40:50):
Uh, he just defeated Luke Humphries just defeated Luke Littler
eleven eight in the Premiere League of Darts final.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Let's go lad. Now why this is so special?
Speaker 4 (41:04):
Luke Humphries, He just completed the sports prestigious Triple Crown.
Well done, Lad, that's a great way for you. Best
week in sports right there, Luke Humphrees Humphries.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
Marvin bwis.
Speaker 8 (41:19):
My pick the Florida Panthers. When you think of hockey,
you think of Florida. For the sixth straight year, a
team from Florida will represent the East in the Stanley
Cup Final.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Paul, best Week.
Speaker 6 (41:30):
This guy Sam Presty, the GM and VP of the
Oklahoma City Thunder. He won Executive the year he's been.
He's got three rings already from back in the day.
He got an ovation from the crowd after the game.
They mentioned him. He got a full ovation. Sam Presty's
having a good year.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
He should. He should get a standing ovation. Set this
team up for the next five years coming up? Final
hour or good Buddy Ross Tucker on who has the
most pressure this upcoming NFL season, and the actor Brian
Cranston will still as well. Hope you'll join us for
the final hour, and this Friday after this
