three DP show Best and Worst of the weekend. What
you saw that you liked you didn't like. SEC Commissioner
Greg Sanke will join us coming up in an hour
from now, and Seaton, you want to give us the
(01:07):
poll question for hour two.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Please, yeah, we got up there.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Right now, the Knicks in the offseason, do they need
to make a big move or just some minor tweaks
Right now, minor Tweaks has about sixty three percent of
that vote. We're also putting up their better finals Piecers, Thunder, Oilers, Panthers.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Okay, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
What I find interesting I don't want to say ironic,
but I'll say interesting, and that is the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Relatively unknown nationally. You do have the MVP Chad Holmgren.
Maybe you know of him because he's in the commercial
with SGA played at Gunzaga seven footer.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Other than that, probably not.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
They're head coach, probably not playing in one of the
smallest mark's in the NBA. But they're one of the
biggest favorites we've had in the last twenty five years.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
That doesn't I mean, those things don't go together.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
The Thunder are the biggest favorites to win a title
since only the twenty eighteen Warriors. So if you go
back to two thousand and five, only one team and
that had star power, the Warriors against the Cavaliers. I mean,
it says a lot for how good they are. That
they can still be under the radar, and you're the favorite,
(02:33):
prohibitive favorite, one of the biggest favorites we've had in
twenty years. And you'd be hard pressed to name their
starting lineup, hard press to name their coach. Everybody's going
to get SGA. And by the way, there's a lot
of revisionist history going on right now because everybody's talking
about Paul George. Both of these teams were helped assisted
(02:57):
by trading away Paul George. You go back and listen
to some of the you know, experts talking about the trade.
They were not talking about SGA. They weren't talking about
these draft picks. It was Hey, the Clippers, they got
the better end of this deal. They got Paul George,
all pairing him with Kawhi Okay. And then nobody knew
(03:19):
about Tyree's Halliburton. I mean I did, but you know,
I don't have a life, and I was watching Sacramento.
So when that trade was announced, you know Sabonis and
I went, Haliburton's really good. I think you guys looked
at me, like, really, he's really good. Now I love
(03:40):
Sabonis too, but you know, Tyre's Haliburton is what they
needed great player, and you know when you're trading away
Paul George and this is what you get in return.
There are a lot of people who have forgotten that
they were all in on these teams getting Paul George.
And let's face it, Paul George was a great player.
(04:02):
But these teams they were patient. They didn't have to
win now. And look at what happened with SGA. This
was about all the draft picks that Okase had. This
wasn't about getting SGA. The Clippers didn't know what they
had in SGA. They if they did, they wouldn't have
given up him for Paul George.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
Yes, Marvin, Oklahoma City didn't know either. If you say,
if this guy's gonna be the MVP of the league,
of what league?
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, well then you would go, all right, we don't
need four first round draft picks.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
We can get by with two first rounds.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
No, they're like, we won all the first round draft
picks you have, and you know, so then you get
all these draft That's what it was supposed to be about.
It's almost like SGA was a throw in. Hey, we'll
give you a player too, yes, Martin.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
This is almost like if the new Orleans Pelicans got
to the finals and Brandon Ingram was League MVP because
they traded away Anthony Davis like, oh, you know, we'll
throw in brandon Ingram and he ends up becoming you know,
this great play.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
This is kind of the same thing, Yes, Pauline, I
actually this is.
Speaker 6 (05:03):
Not a good thing for the Paul George trade. I
saw peace on NBA TV comparing thing if OKC wins
did Paul George trade is the Herschel Walker trade. Oh
of the NBA, And that's not a trade you want
to be part of unless it's not a good side.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, because I don't know if one of those draft
picks Chet Holmgren, do we know what the first round
draft picks.
Speaker 6 (05:24):
Marvin Glyn Williams was their second pick of that draft.
They earned Chet Holmgren in the lottery with the second pick,
but Jalen Williams was the gift from the Clippers.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Oh okay, all right, spend a little bit of time
talking about the Nickson the first hour, because we tend
to focus on the team that has been eliminated.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
We have plenty of time to talk about Pacers and Oka.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
See, but the Knicks are interesting because if you ask
a Knicks fan was this a successful season? They might
say no, because Cleveland was out, Boston was banged up.
All you had to do was get by Indiana, and
you're going to the NBA Finals. That feels like it's
a disappointment. Now you have the finger pointing. Now it
(06:07):
feels like Karl Anthony Towns is the guy who is in.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Question right now.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Offensively, he was great during the postseason, certainly in that series,
scoring and rebounding. He just people woke up to the
realization that he doesn't play defense, which I find amazing.
If you had watched him in Minnesota, you would have
realized that you traded for him. So obviously you have
(06:34):
to get guys who are going to be defensive players.
Like I'm not relying on him to be a great
defensive player. Am I relying on him to be an
average defensive player serviceable? And the answer is yes, because
there are a few players I'm not relying on Luca
to play defense. Now, what I like for him to
(06:55):
put out some effort so he's not. When they single
you out, that's when you know you're a bad defender.
When they, like the Cavaliers said, we're going right at
Tyler Hero. We're telling him we're going right at you.
The Pacers went right after Karl Anthony Towns. They're like, hey,
(07:16):
pick and roll every single time. You could see it
happening when they single you out and they go, we're
you know, we're going right at Luca. There's no mystery here,
right at Luca. That's when you know you're a really
bad defender. Yes, Marvin, I.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
Was upset four Knicks fans watching every single play in
the fourth quarter. Hey, Tyre's Halliburton is literally hey, come
over here, come over here, and that's that high screen
and roll, Oh my goodness, and Carling the Towns wouldn't
even step up. And that floater is a layup to Halliburton.
That's a shot. He practices with regularity, and you don't step.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Up on him during warm ups. Even prior to warm ups,
Haliburt is practicing the floater. You know that that's where
he wants to go. That's what he wants to do,
you know, So all right, you might take a deep three,
but he does like getting in the lane. The floaters there,
you can see what he wants to do. It's right there.
(08:16):
But yeah, I got to point some fingers here, and
I guess it's Karl Anthony Towns.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Now what do you do? Can you add?
Speaker 7 (08:27):
Are you going.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
To trade Karl Anthony Towns? Can you trade him? What
do you get for him? What is it exactly that
you want? Because he is a very skilled seven foot
shooting guard, that's what he is. But he you know,
he went to the hoop, he was aggressive, his knee
(08:49):
was bothering him. He just doesn't play defense. And that's
what I find amazing that Tom Thibodeau would say, Yep,
bring him in. He's a defensive minded guy. You already
got Brunson who doesn't play defense very well. Now all
of a sudden, you go, I need Josh Hart. You've
got to play even more defense and better defense. Mckail
(09:12):
Bridges and oj ananob You've got to play really, really
good defense, okay, because those guys aren't going to Yeah, pulling.
Speaker 6 (09:20):
Players that average more blocks per game than Carl Anthony
Towns in the playoffs. Point guard Derek White, shooting guard
Anthony Edwards, point guard Tyrese Haliburton, Josh Hart, Kayde Cunningham,
James Harden averaged more blocks per game than Karl Anthony Towns.
Ben Simmons averaged more blocks per game. Wow, And I
double checked it because I was shocked Steph Curry and
(09:44):
I was tied with Karl Anthony Towns blocks per game.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Here is Tom Thibodeau, the head coach of the Knicks,
the question and his answer, what is the.
Speaker 8 (09:55):
Message of the team after a game like this, after
the run you guys have had in the postseason?
Speaker 7 (09:59):
And yeah, I think you know.
Speaker 9 (10:01):
And again there's disappointment because you'd fall short of what
your goal is, right, and there's in the end, there's
only going to be one team that achieves the goal.
And so I think the challenge for us is to
look at it for what it is, and it's, you know,
we finished in the top three, but it's we're falling
(10:21):
short of the ultimate goal. And so for us, it's
to use that for motivation and determination to work all
summer to prepare ourselves to make the final step and
keep improving so we can achieve our goal.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Alrighty, whatever that means. Are you keeping Karl Anthony Towns?
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Yes, Todd, why top three instead of top four?
Speaker 10 (10:43):
Because they won one more game than the Western Conference
finals that makes them the third best of the.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
Fourth okay, the top four two technically six games versus
the five games. Okay, yes, Marvin, No, I think because
they were the three seed.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yeah, so you got the under big favorites, uh, Pacers
getting nine, Game one getting nine.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
The title odds the Thunder minus seven hundred to the
Pacers plus five hundred for entertainment purposes only, Yes, Paul,
this is.
Speaker 6 (11:17):
A classic bet on the Pacers to win outright in
game one, because they shouldn't win game one.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Or I'm gonna guess on our gambling podcast, Dan Patrick
takes a gamble available at danpatrick dot com. This is
one where Dylan takes the Pacers outright to win the title.
Probably why Dylan is always down money. He's always you know,
in the uh in the red. But uh, I could
see him taking a flyer on the uh, the Pacers,
(11:43):
and that's where the money is if you're gonna make
a bet. I saw where Joe Flacco had some comments
about Shador Sanders the quarterback room, and he had some
you know, complimentary things to say about Shador Sanders. He
said that right now in the meeting rooms, he's made
me crack a smile and that and that's what it's about.
(12:07):
He's a young guy trying to learn some football and
come out here and practice well and do those things.
He's been a lot of fun, so I don't know
what that means, though he's like, hey, he's saying nice
things about Shador.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Can he play? I'm hearing really good things.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Okay, I'm hearing really good things that he is acting
like a rookie. He's acting he's not you know, nepotism
or privileged or any of that. That he's actually playing well,
doing the right things. The problem is Dylan Gabriel is
getting some negative reviews. Yeah, yeah, there's a reporter. Brown's
(12:50):
reporter said, doesn't look like an NFL quarterback. Should Or
Sanders is going to be a starting quarterback with the
Browns at some point this season? Just going to because
if you're Cleveland, what do you have to lose? Joe
Flacco's not your future, Kenny Pickett's not your future. Dylan
Gabriel might not be your future. Then it might be
(13:11):
Shadoor Sanders.
Speaker 6 (13:13):
Yeah, Paul, I'll put a Dylan Gabriel takes a snap
in a regular season game before Shador.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Sands whoa whoa who wants a piece of that.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Dylan Gabriel gets in before sharduor sand.
Speaker 6 (13:27):
Yeah, and since it's the Browns on theme Fritzy chocolate
cream pie.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
Oh yeah, let's have some fun with that, okay, And
just like that we have a bet, yes, Seaton.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
So not only is Paul saying that Dylan Gabriel will
be second string over Shadoor, Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and
Kenny Pickett, at least two of those other quarterbacks are
going to be cut, right, Well, yeah, you're you're not
keeping five. Shaun Watson's not playing, so we can take
(14:00):
him out of the equation, all right, So then he's
going to beat out Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and Shador.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yes, that he will. He will take a snap. No,
he'll take a snap before Shad or Sanders. I don't
know what string, okay.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
Right, okay, right, well, he would have to be second string,
you would think, right, or maybe third string. And then
somebody gets hurt and then so who is the starting
quarterback there?
Speaker 3 (14:23):
I get the feeling it'll be Kenny Pickett.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
But so then Kenny Pickett is the starter, Joe Flacco's
second string probably maybe that means Dylan Gabriel would then
be third string. But then for some that means Kenny
Pickett goes out hurt or something, Joe Flacco is in
and then he's pulled, and then Dylan Gabriel comes in.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Before Shador perfectly summarized.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Okay, all right, we'll try to get the parameters of
the bet. Yes, we'll take a break. Charles Barkley joins
us next year on the Dan Patrick Show.

Hall of Famer Charles Barkley back on the program. Are
you unemployed right now?
Speaker 9 (16:10):
No?
Speaker 7 (16:10):
I signed a deal last week.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Then okay, when do you start working with ESPN.
Speaker 7 (16:17):
Next year when the season starts?
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Okay, so there's nothing going on from now until the
start of next season.
Speaker 8 (16:26):
No, you know, I took my time trying to figure out.
My big thing was the work schedule, and I got together.
I's been working on it for like two months, and
I got together with T and T last week and
I signed a deal.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
So how many days a week are you going to
work at the Mothership.
Speaker 7 (16:45):
Well, you know it's I don't even think they know
the exact schedule, to be honest with.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
You, so you better know the exact schedule.
Speaker 8 (16:52):
Well, I'm gonna trust trust them, you know, but that's
been my biggest concern.
Speaker 7 (16:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (16:58):
Uh So, like I said, I didn't officially assigned it
to last week. I said, I'd worked for two more
years and that's what I agreed to, and I'm gonna
have to trust them. But I listen, you know, if
if they start trying to work with me too much
between ESPN TNT, I'm just gonna walk on home, you know,
(17:19):
because listen, I actually have seven years left on my contract. Like, yeah,
there's no way I'm working seven years.
Speaker 7 (17:24):
I says.
Speaker 8 (17:25):
You know, I'm gonna be a good soldier for Kenny,
Ernie and Shaq and the people I work with, because
I love the people I work with, especially behind the scenes.
I said, but the best I can do is two
years and the mother five years. They got no chance
to happen, and so I said, you know what, I
give y'all two years. They're like, can we get three?
I said, I just told you I'm gonna get you
(17:46):
you know, David, it was so fun. I said, I
get I'll give you two years that can we get three?
I said, I just told you I was gonna get
you two.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Welcome to the SPN way of life.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
Though this is the.
Speaker 8 (17:57):
TNT people, Uh because because my I think my my
contract technically is.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
Still with T and T.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
Okay, Okay, yeah, okay.
Speaker 7 (18:06):
Yeah, I'm gonna be a good soldier.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
What was that feeling like last show?
Speaker 7 (18:13):
Well, I was fine.
Speaker 8 (18:14):
Until Ernie started getting emotional and then I started tearing up.
And I'm glad that they only had the camera on him,
you know, because Kenny and Shaq, you know, they were
just talking.
Speaker 7 (18:23):
I was like, okay, he did, but Ernie was emotional.
Speaker 13 (18:27):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (18:27):
The crowd was great.
Speaker 8 (18:29):
Uh But like I said, man, you've been I've been
with these people for twenty five years. It's a great thing.
Speaker 12 (18:34):
You know.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
The NBA family has been tremendous to us. The fans
have been tremendous for us.
Speaker 7 (18:40):
Uh. But you know, I will admit, you know, I'm
looking forward.
Speaker 8 (18:44):
You know, ESPN is the most famous sports brand ever,
and it's gonna be Uh, it's gonna be awesome working
for them, and uh, nobody knows what's gonna happen. I mean,
I think that's the only thing that like, what are
we actually gonna do? So I think that's that's the
only thing. But like I say, I did not want
(19:04):
to leave people out in the cold, So I say,
you know what, let me do it for a couple
of years and then y'all.
Speaker 7 (19:11):
Can have it.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Okay, But does the show look like the show? It's
just it's inside the NBA, but it's on ESPN. Is
that how you're uh like positioning this.
Speaker 7 (19:24):
Dad, We don't even know you see that?
Speaker 8 (19:27):
That that's the onely reason I was waiting, like, yeah,
I don't know what we're doing. And then TNT is
trying to do something stupid behind the scenes. We taped
the pilot about a month ago, and it was the
stupidest ship I've ever seen my life, you know, because
because because we're not going to be on ESPN as
(19:48):
much as people.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Think, wait, wait, what do you mean you taped a pilot?
Speaker 8 (19:52):
Well, because ESPN, Because we're only probably going to be
working for ESPN like half the time to one third
out of the time. So I think tn T wants
to do something and we taped a pilot about a
month ago and it was the stupidest ship ever.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Okay, so you're still going to do a show, an
NBA show on t n T, and you're gonna do
a show on ESPN.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Yes, okay, good but but but like.
Speaker 8 (20:21):
I said, if they're being honest, we're gonna probably work
on ESPN one third or half the time. But they're
trying to do something stupid at tn T, which which
which is? Which is number one? Is the stupid idea
for a couple of reasons. Number one, we we won't,
we won't. We won't have basketball highlights. But also we're
(20:45):
probably gonna be going up against the NBA game, and
I don't anybody who likes basketball. They ain't gonna say, hey,
you know what, let me turn off an NBA games
on Amazon, ESPN or NBC the go watch these four
dudes hit around and talk about nothing. So it's complicated.
(21:06):
And like I say, we taped the pilot doing stupid
stuff and it was just stupid stuff. And I wouldn't
want to go out like that.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
Okay, is this like a second screen or a manning can?
Like what are we doing here?
Speaker 7 (21:22):
They don't know?
Speaker 8 (21:25):
They listen, Oh my God, I'm telling you, Dan, it
was interesting. We were sitting there taping it. Well, I
will admit one thing I get T and T credit.
They did say it was awful pilot.
Speaker 13 (21:38):
With you.
Speaker 7 (21:39):
They were honest. They were honest because they were like,
we just uh so they want to do something.
Speaker 8 (21:46):
But like I say, the problem we got we gotta
be going up because they're gonna be probably much Well, no,
that's gonna be ann big NBA game on every night,
so whenever we do it, it's gonna be up against
an NBA game.
Speaker 7 (21:58):
So that's the first part problem.
Speaker 8 (22:00):
So, but I guess they want to feel like they're
doing something to make us earn our money from tn.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
T Charles Barkley joining us inside the n B A
uh on t n T, is it gonna be? Okay,
what's the show called on t N T? And is
what's the show called on ESPN?
Speaker 8 (22:21):
Then then then first of all, I guess inside the
n B A H. I think and and I guess
it's gonna be just inside the NBA on.
Speaker 7 (22:32):
ESPN A b C. I think that's easy. But I
think so I forget. I think the pile is called
inside the NBA.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
That's not confusing.
Speaker 7 (22:42):
Well, well you know that, you know the thing that
was hilarious about it. Then we didn't have any NBA.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
But you know, you have no rights to the NBA,
but you're outside of the NBA.
Speaker 7 (22:53):
That's right. We can't still highlights. We can't show highlights.
Speaker 8 (22:58):
So we were in there for like an hour and
a half taping this pilot and we're looking at each other,
what the hell are we doing? But like I say,
I give TNT credit the first thing they said out
of the pilot. Yeah, that was really stupid. We got
to figure something out.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
What role do you think Michael Jordan's going to play
with NBC's coverage.
Speaker 7 (23:21):
Oh, that's a great question. I don't know.
Speaker 8 (23:24):
I don't see Michael Bean on television a lot. I
mean I don't see Michael Bean on television a lot.
To be honest with you, why do you think he's
doing this?
Speaker 7 (23:34):
I have a zero ideal. I think it's great that
he's going to be part of the NBA.
Speaker 8 (23:38):
I mean, he's in my opinion, no disrespect to Kobe
or Lebron, he's the greatest player I've seen. I have
no idea why he's doing it, but it's a welcome addition.
I mean, yo, man, you know this is going to
be interesting going forward because there's so much money out
there right now. Dan, like, they got to do everything
(24:02):
and their power to engage fans. I mean the money
at the NBC, Amazon and ESPN are paying.
Speaker 7 (24:10):
You know.
Speaker 8 (24:11):
You know, I tell people we were paying about one
point two billion dollars a year and it goes up
to two point five billion. Those numbers don't compute, so
you're gonna have to do everything in your power to
draw fans. I think it's gonna be fascinating going forward
how this thing is going to work.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
What do you think Jordan would get paid today if
he was playing, Well, he'd be.
Speaker 8 (24:34):
The first one hundred million dollar player. Well, well, first
of all, we gonna have guys making seventy eight to
ninety million dollars three to four years. Yes, you know,
but you know, man, bless these guys as long as
they appreciate how lucky they are and don't think they're
making all that money because they're great players. They were
just boring at the right time. We got a bunch
(24:54):
of great players. But man, these guys, I just hope
they appreciate how lucky they are, and stop this bs
with low management. You know, we can't keep crapping on
the fans where we're like, yeah, wait, yeah, you're making
seventy million dollars. You can't play basketball four days a week,
you can't work two days in a row. And you
(25:16):
want doctors and nurses and en firemen and comps and
people in the military and people who got like work
in the cement factory, Like, wait a minute, I make
twenty dollars an hour. This dude makes seventy million dollars
and he can't play back to back. Come on, man,
I think that's an insult to the fans, and it
might be a problem. It was already a problem, but
(25:39):
when this money like double and triple, the fans gonna
are like, yeah, I'm not watching this crap any more.
Speaker 7 (25:46):
If these dudes can't play two games in.
Speaker 8 (25:47):
A row, can you imagine your fan and you get
like a great player who comes west to east or
east to west, he's on the coming one time a
year and the tickets are ridiculous, and you're like, yeah,
he played last night. Uh So I think there's some
things we got to amstor basketball players going forward.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Yeah, but you're making whatever, twenty million dollars a year
and you only want to work two days a week.
Speaker 7 (26:13):
I show up every day, though, Hey, listen, I show up.
I show up every day.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
Then, okay, back back to back though.
Speaker 7 (26:25):
Back to back?
Speaker 8 (26:26):
Wait, like doing the playoffs, you know, we worked like
six days a week, and I show up every day
for those six days.
Speaker 7 (26:32):
Hey, And then you know what, you guys, you know.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
I apologize. I apologize. I didn't realize the work schedule,
the workload.
Speaker 7 (26:39):
You have my bad.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
Oh he's just wait, just oh there you go? Are
you back?
Speaker 13 (26:50):
Just ye?
Speaker 3 (26:50):
You can't hear me now?
Speaker 9 (26:51):
No.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
You froze up right after I said that with the apology,
and I thought you were you know, it was a
dramatic paulage there, so woll because it.
Speaker 7 (26:58):
Was a dramatic pause. I just saw Shaw changed me. Dan,
don't do that.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
I didn't shawshank you changed Oh I thought it was
Shaw shanked. Oh yeah, I sure changed you, But I
didn't shawshank you. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (27:12):
Okay, but but you know these guys out there, you know,
I'm so old.
Speaker 8 (27:16):
We flew commercial and played it back to back, and
these guys got the best private planes, They got the
best medical staff, they got these cold water plunges, they got.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
The hyperbaric chambers.
Speaker 8 (27:32):
I mean, they got the best shoes, and they can't
play basketball two days in a row for fifty sixty
million dollars.
Speaker 7 (27:39):
That's the craziest stuff ever.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Man, Well, this will be crazy, I'm sure to you.
But I brought this up to Stephen Jackson last week.
I said, you know, can you see a time or
get ready for Larry Bird dropping out as one of
the top ten players of all time? Like, could you
see a scenario where Larry is not ranked in the
top ten all time?
Speaker 7 (28:00):
Well, let me say this.
Speaker 8 (28:02):
The three most important figures in NBA history of Magic Johnson,
Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan. You know, there are a
lot of great players, but there's only a few guys
who transcend the sport. I'll be I'll throw Kobe in there,
I'll throw Lebron in there, I'll stow Steph in there.
(28:23):
And there are a lot of really, really good players,
but nobody can take away the historic significant member. Dave
Corbin's one of the greatest ever against mad When I
say this, before Magic Johnson and Larry Berry, the league
was too black. Two Thugery, the average salary was two
hundred thousand dollars. Now the average salary is like twelve
(28:43):
million dollars, and Magic and Bird started transformation. Michael Jordan
took it to a whole other level. He got guys
making a one hundred million dollars from Nike now and
other shoe brands. That's all Michael Jordan. Because you look
at the same thing in golf, Garrett, Player, Arnold and Jack.
They are the three foundational pieces and Tiger Woods that
(29:07):
once in a generation player who was Michael Jordan and golf.
Speaker 7 (29:11):
There are a lot of great players.
Speaker 8 (29:13):
Phil Michles is probably the only other person in that
conversation in golf, but there's very few athletes in every
sport that people can say, oh, you know, yeah, he's playing,
I'm going to watch.
Speaker 7 (29:24):
That does not be We don't have a lot of
great players.
Speaker 8 (29:27):
Like right now, we got Shade, we got the Joker,
we got Joannis, we got Lebron Luke, all these guys,
but there are very few players that transcend their sport.
So no matter what happens with Bird, as far as that,
him and Mattic Johnson are the two most important figures
in NBA history. In my opinion, Then I say, then
(29:50):
we all old Michael, because when Michaels, you know, when
he started doing commercials, that changed everything for everybody. Now,
because of Michael, I was making millions of dollars from
wearing Nike. Nobody was doing that. Nobody had a signature
shoe or they were making one hundred million dollars a year.
(30:10):
That's all because of Michael. That's why, regardless of all
this other stuff, this Lebron stuff, this Kobe stuff, people
buy shoes because of Michael freaking Jordan. That's it, I mean,
And that's no disrespect to anybody. Yes, some of these
other guys out here selling shoes, why didn't you just
make people wearing shoes to wedding? Nobody ever thought about
(30:34):
wearing shoes to weddings until I could do it.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
Think about that, then, did you ever wear Air Jordan's
when you played?
Speaker 7 (30:44):
I'll tell you what's interesting about that.
Speaker 8 (30:46):
When Michael had pulled me aside and told me we
went out smoking cigars the last time, he said, the
Marty that flew down, he said, I got something to
tell you guys. He flew down to Houston and he
takes us out, we go out to dinner, we go
out to smoke some c guards. He says, guys, I'm
just giving you all the heads up. I'm gonna retire
(31:06):
to the end of the season. I'm like, what am
And a mob was like, I think he's serious. He
said he I'm gonna retire to the end of the season.
So I called him like a week later, and I said, oh, man,
that's a tribute. Because you know, remember when Magic Johnson
announced he had aides. I wanted to pay homage to him.
(31:27):
I called Billy Cunningham and said, Hey, can I wear
your jersey to celebrate Magic Johnson? He said sure, no problem,
I said, because, And I called Urban. I say, hey, Man,
for everything you did for me and my family, I'm
gonna wear number thirty two all year. So I wore
thirty two one year. But I called Michael and I said, hey,
send me a pair of shoes. I just want to
(31:48):
tell you how much I appreciate everything you did for me.
Give me that give me that advice on that Nike
stock that made me a thirty million dollars And.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
That was an insider trading, was it?
Speaker 7 (32:00):
No?
Speaker 8 (32:01):
Because you know, at the time I was making about
three million dollars a year, and we were playing golf
and he said, Chuck, I was talking to somebody, so
I want you to quit taking three million, take a million,
and take the other two million and stock options. So
I called my people and they say, hey, Michael told
me to do that because Mike has always been a
(32:22):
brilliant businessman. And they're like, this is risky. You think
he gonna be that great? I says, Man, I ain't
never seen nobody like that, dude, because I had met
him at the Olympic trials. I says, he gonna be amazing,
he says. And we did it, and like I said,
I ended up probably making seriously another fifty million dollars
to be honest with you, but he made me trade
(32:43):
that in. But the point I was making, man, I
put his shoes on. One game, he definitely did the
greatest band basketball player ever. Then.
Speaker 7 (32:52):
Those were the heaviest down there ever played in in
my life.
Speaker 8 (32:55):
I'm not even joking, because when I designed my shoes,
I wanted to really really like I played in those
heavy ass air joints. One game it was like I
had bricks on my damn feet then. And I've been
one hundred cents serious. I called him man, I actually
called him after the game. I said, Yo, Man, what
the hell you be putting in these damn stuts? I
(33:18):
mean they were so damn heavy. Then I said, hey,
I played in them one game as attribute to him.
These shoes too damn heavy for me. Man, that's a
true story.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Then it makes it even more amazing what Mike did
in those air Jordans.
Speaker 7 (33:32):
I said, you really are the damn bricks bricks?
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Do do you think he could have had them design
a special pair for you that maybe were a little heavy.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
You know, Mike's very competitive.
Speaker 8 (33:46):
No, because he got them to me, like in two days. Okay, okay, y, yeah, yeah, no,
he had time to put no bricks in them. But man,
them shoes were heavy as hell.
Speaker 2 (33:54):
Man, before I let you go, Uh, what kind of
chance do you give the Pacers against Okase?
Speaker 8 (34:00):
I think they can make it competitive, but I've been
saying for months nobody can beat that team four times
in a week. The Pacers got a good team, but
the okay, see, they're one of the best teams I've
seen a long time. They're the deepest, they might be
the deepest NBA team. I've ever seen. They be playing
guys who don't even play, like the last series, and
(34:22):
they put them in the game.
Speaker 7 (34:23):
They're like, damn, what he been so and that's gonna
really negate the Patriots.
Speaker 8 (34:29):
The Pacers bench which beat them to help them beat
the Knicks because the Thunder they're bringing better players off
the bench than the Pacers. The Pacers got a terrific bench,
but Oklahoma City got better bench players.
Speaker 7 (34:45):
So I hope it's a good series, but I don't
think anybody can beat Okay, see four times in a week.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
Great to talk to you. Perhaps I'll see you in Tahoe.
Speaker 7 (34:56):
You a coward, Dan know.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
I'm gonna go out there.
Speaker 7 (35:00):
Oh you're not gonna play.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
Well, they didn't invite me. I might be working.
Speaker 7 (35:07):
You won't be working. We play on a Friday afternoon,
on Saturday and Sunday.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
I'm bringing I think I might bring the show out
to Tahoe.
Speaker 7 (35:16):
You bring it out and I do. I should do
how long you own? How long you own?
Speaker 3 (35:21):
Three hours?
Speaker 7 (35:22):
I'll give you an hour one day, me and you.
Speaker 8 (35:25):
Okay, So last time you came to Tahoe, you missed
about six little three inch putts because you normally they give.
Speaker 7 (35:33):
You you know, yeah, that's a d we have to
put out.
Speaker 10 (35:37):
I know, I know.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
I didn't pick up my ball one time, like that's good, right,
And then I was like, oh no, people looked at
me like what are you doing.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
I wasn't that good?
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Then like no, you gotta play them, got to play
them all the way to them. Yes you do, brother,
all right, uh yeah, I'll see you maybe in July.
Speaker 7 (35:56):
All right, brother, be safe there.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
All right, that's Charles bark We'll take a break. When
we come back, we will give you our best and
worst to the weekend.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
After this, be sure to catch the live edition of
The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six
am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio w APP.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
Time to give you our best and worst to the weekend.
Not before we recap a little bit of Charles Barkley.
Feels like there's a second screen type thing coming up
with TNT, that they still have contracts at TNT, but
then you also have them working at ESPN. Doesn't sound
like they are. Well, they got a lot of time
(36:35):
before the start of next season. But when Charles doesn't
know what's going on, I'm gonna guess Shaq doesn't and
Kenny and Ernie. But TNT is still trying to do
something when you're inside the NBA, but you don't have
the rights to the NBA. It's tough to be inside
the NBA under those restrictions there, Yes, un because.
Speaker 10 (36:58):
You're saying, like, trust us, that was a good dunk
that where you can't show you now it's gonna be
a little.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Awkward, yeah, or maybe you just reenact certain plays or
something like, oh, the unbelievable play by Joker. Here's Kenny
and Shack to reenact it there. All right, let's go
around the room. Best and worst of the weekend, Todd,
I'll start with you.
Speaker 7 (37:17):
Best.
Speaker 10 (37:17):
Friday Night, the Ravine between the Yankees and Dodgers. Aaron
judge Homeward in the top of the first show, Hey
responds to the home or on the bottom half first
time two reigning MVPs Homeward in the same inning of
the same game, Oh tiny went Yardy get in the
sixth inning, starting a four run rally and the Dodgers
come from behind with an eighty five win. Worst of
the weekend the Dallas Wings, announcing on Friday Page Beckers
had to be put in concussion protocol after getting fouled
(37:39):
by Chicago's Guy's Courtney Vanderslot on Thursday. Hopefully Page won't
miss too many games.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Collin powten All right, see O'Connor. Best and worst.
Speaker 4 (37:46):
I'm gonna go two bests because I'm a positive person.
My first best PSG winning the Champions League. Massive massive
accomplishment for them, especially considering since.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
They had him Bappe, they had neymar they had Messi.
Speaker 4 (37:58):
All of them have since left left and now they
won with out all of them, which is an interesting storyline.
My other best is Right State upsetting Vanderbilt. That's a
massive upset. Yeah, that's pretty great.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
Yeah college baseball, Right State Raiders Dateton, Ohio. Yeah Yeah.
Named after the Wright brothers Marvin. Best and worst of
the week.
Speaker 5 (38:23):
Best, Hall of Very Good Guy Andrew McCutcheon hit his
two hundred and fortieth home run as a Pittsburgh Pirate,
tying Roberto Clemente, one of the Pirates' all time home
run list.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
Worst it what I ain't done. The Hall very Good,
he's Hall of Good.
Speaker 5 (38:39):
He's got a MVP award. Okay, Hall of Very Good.
MVP gets you in the Hall of Very Good. All right,
Terry Pendleton's in the Hall of Very Good.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
I just MVP. Well, let's not start this.
Speaker 4 (38:50):
They're getting a little crazy with Hall of Very Good.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
I gotta admit, Yeah, do you think we're being a
little too leanient? I think we're letting a hell of
a lot of people in Hall of Very Good?
Speaker 4 (39:00):
Was you were almost a Hall of Famer, But man,
you're this close to being a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
I agree.
Speaker 5 (39:06):
So I'm just gonna keep Andrew McCutcheon in and take
Terry Pendleton out.
Speaker 7 (39:09):
All right.
Speaker 5 (39:10):
Worst, Well, we just talked about the Hall of Very
Good standards, Okay, anything else? Connecticut Sound lost by forty
eight points to the New York Liberty.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
Okay, Paul, I'll go Worst of the Weekend.
Speaker 6 (39:26):
I felt bad for Tyrese Haliburton as he's going to
the NBA Finals the JAB step when he thought he
was MVP. That's a tough little video to be out there.
But what do you gotta do? Best of the Weekend?
LSU Shreveport the baseball team. They completed the fifty nine
and oh season claiming the twenty twenty five NAIA Baseball
National championship. No college baseball team has ever finished the
(39:48):
season undefeated whilst winning a title, obviously, and they did
it LSU Shreveport fifty nine to zero.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
Sawyer in Maine, Hi, Sawyer? What's on your mind?
Speaker 13 (40:00):
They about five ten one four?
Speaker 7 (40:05):
Dan.
Speaker 13 (40:05):
I'm actually a fourth generation veterinarian from Oregon out here
in the manly state of Maine for a wedding my
wife and I my wife took me thrifting, flash antiquing yesterday,
just about my favorite activity. And uh, I came across
the poster from the nineteen ninety eight SP's lots of
(40:25):
scribbles around the perimeter. What caught my eye is in
the lower left corner. Mister Dan Patrick signed it and
then premire with a lot of lesser famous people, Will Ferrell,
Tiger Woods, Joe name is, John Oway, Stuart Scott, Norm MacDonald,
Evander Holyfield, lots of names. Question is I paid one
(40:47):
hundred bucks for this thing? Did I overpay, underpay? Or
did that seem just about right?
Speaker 3 (40:53):
I think it's priceless.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
I mean those are big odd if if everybody actually
signed them, or was just a poster and they manufactured,
you know, reproduced, everybody's signature. But if you got like
legitimate signatures on there, then yeah, that's that's one hundred
bucks well spent. In my opinion, I actually thought Sawyer
was going to donate that to the man Cave. I
(41:16):
thought he was like, it was a big build up there,
and I'd like to present it to you. Dan, put
it in your main studio. Two hours in the books,
One more to go. The SEC Commissioner Greg sank he'll
join us, coming up next.
