Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio Our two.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
On this Meet Friday, Gangsol here, Fritzy, Sat and Marv Pauli,
Yours Truly and the brgs and you at home or
wherever you might be taking in this program. You can
vote on the most valuable danet. Go to Danpatrick dot
com and the polls will be open until Tuesday. In
the final hour of the program, Danpatrick dot Com. Lewis

(00:26):
Riddick of the Mothership will stop by. Also Ryan Leaf,
former quarterback. He'll be on the call for the Bears
Packers Westwood One. That'll be Saturday night. He'll join us
in the final hour of the program. Stat of the
Day is always brought to you by Panini America, the
official trading cards of the program. And we'll have a
new poll question. Say good morning those watching on Peacock,

(00:47):
our streaming partner, or those listening on our radio affiliates,
including iHeartRadio and Foxsports Radio. It was a game that
I said was too big for Thursday night, kind of
joking like it was a Sunday night game on NBC,
But it lived up to the hype. I was curious
about a couple of things, and one was that Sean

(01:09):
McVay and the Rams went for it on fourth down
four times in the first quarter. And I don't know
what the message was with his team, like let's jump
on them early, let's make them one dimensional, Let's make
Sam Darnold have to beat us. The running game was
great with Seattle. Maybe we can take the crowd out
of this. They did jump out to a sixteen point lead,

(01:32):
and Sam Darnold had a couple interceptions. Wasn't playing great?
Kenneth Walker Junior the third looked great. He's one of
those guys that a standalone game really helps because it
reminds you of he runs downhill, as the analysts like
to say, he runs downhill, he runs hard. And Seattle

(01:52):
is resilient if I would say one word, they're resilient
because they almost beat the Rams earlier this year when
Sam Darnold had four interceptions, they lost by two, I think.
And then here you have this game in Seattle. I
don't know if it's sustainable, Like that's the big question
I have. Can you get by in the playoffs if

(02:13):
you have another game like this? Seattle's twelve and three
Rams are eleven and four Vegas this morning, reminding everybody
the odds to win the Super Bowl the Rams plus
four to twenty five, Seattle plus five hundred, Broncos plus
seven fifty Bills plus eight hundred Eagles, and Texans at

(02:35):
plus eleven hundred. Trying to win these games. You continue
to win these games, it's really difficult to be on
the tightrope. And we saw that with the Chiefs this
year as opposed to last year. I think they were
twelve to zero in one score games, last year one
in seven. I believe this year in one score games,
you can't live and die by it. I mean you can,

(02:59):
but it's just not sustainable. And I think that's what
I'm looking at. With Seattle. You won, but it's one
of those. Yeah. But and even the Rams, how how
did you not win that game? Stafford throws for four
point fifty Poka Nakua has over two hundred yards receiving,
You got turnovers, you got a couple interceptions. Stafford didn't

(03:22):
throw in any interceptions. I'm surprised you got to close them.
And Seattle's defense ended up winning that game with a
couple of key stops two point conversion. I loved it
here is the reasoning behind it. They're head coach Mike McDonald.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Follow is something we had talked about really throughout the
season and then really particularly for this game because of
the playoff situation. You know, you play for the tie,
you know, make the lock up of playoffs seed. But
I just felt like I just felt great about our
play and I trusted our guys and to clinch credit
to he was really confident and and then the players
ultimately make it happen. So once we got that drive going,

(04:04):
it was pretty clear on what we're.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Going to do.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
And I thought the Rams did a really good job
containing Jackson Smith Nujigba because he had six catches for
sixty four yards. That was in the final quarter, so
they contained him. And he's great. First half he didn't
have a single catch, but he is a really good player.
He's really talented. He's another one of those oh that's right,

(04:27):
that guy, and now he's not Pookinakua, but he has
put himself out there. He's trying to sneak into the
short conversation of best wide receivers. But the Rams defense
had Sam Darnold seeing ghost another rough outing and you

(04:49):
know that third quarter pick was bad, struggling to find
open receivers. You know, it still comes down to Seattle
can win in the playoffs if Sam Darnold plays well.
I don't think you can get by with a couple
interceptions and ask your defense to bail you out they have.

(05:13):
I just think you're gonna have one of those games
where you get tripped up if Sam doesn't have, you know,
one of the better than average games, maybe a no
turnover game, because keep in mind they struggle to score
against the Colts. That offense didn't look good against the Colts.
You got to win barely, beating Philip Rivers on a

(05:35):
last second field goal. It doesn't exude confidence, like I
feel far better about the Rams than I do Seattle,
and I feel like the Niners in Seattle are very
similar that I'm not quite sure because I don't know
how the Niners are doing this. I mean, it feels
like Christan McCaffery has twenty three carries for you know,

(05:57):
sixty eight yards, five catches for you know, forty four
and you know they had all these injuries, your two
best defensive players, and Kyle Shanahan's done an incredible job.
Because you're watching they've had Mac Jones, they had rock Perty.
Like you want to talk about coach of the Year.

(06:17):
He did a great job. Great job, Satan. What's the
poll question for hour two?

Speaker 5 (06:24):
Well, we just put Todd's up there.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Let me check.

Speaker 5 (06:26):
I haven't even looked at the UH results on Todd's
Lane Kiffin question.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Okay, he had up there.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
If you're Lane Kiffin, are you rooting for too Lane
to win? Let's see right now, sixty three percent of
the audience say no.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Okay, that's good. Happy about that, all right?

Speaker 5 (06:45):
And this one's from Paul If your life depended on
a catch, Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase, Jackson Smith, and Jigba
or Pooka Nakula. Pooka Nakula right now has forty three
percent of that vote. The next closest is Justin Jefferson
twenty five percent.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah, that's one of those kind of out of site,
out of mind where you go when he does great things,
that's where you go. Yeah, that's why he's the best
receiver in football. Even Jamar Chase. Jamar Chase loves playing
against the Ravens. By the way, I kiss numbers against
the Ravens are ridiculous. But Jigma is there. But Pooka Nakua.

(07:23):
I don't know how fast he is. I just know
he's fast enough. Let's see Diana or is it Diane
in Corona? Diane and Corona, right, Diane and Corona.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Yes, this is me, so happy to be on here.
I just if Polly wanted to know the best way
it was uncanny Brian, my husband, Brian is driving us
to get my total knee done right now. We just
pulled up in front of the hospital, so I thought
I would just call in, as my husband says, drop
some knowledge on Polly.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Oh okay.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
So basically, think of it as a resurfacing that you
get to keep most of your part. You keep your kneecap.
They resurface the back of your kneecap. You keep the good.
They take away as little as bonus off the top
of the tibia and off the bottom of the femur.
They take as little bone as possible, and they put
in some titanium joint places or joint pieces, one on

(08:15):
the top, one on the bottom, and some blighting pieces there.
So just like think of it as a resurfacing. In
some procedures, you get to keep your ACL and your
PCL and some you don't. So it just depends on
the doctor you use in what ligaments you get to keep.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Do you have that ice machine that you'll put on
your knee and it just gives cold water constantly when
you get out of the hospital. Do you have that already? Yes, okay,
And they say, don't leave it on whatever X number
of hours. Leave it on twenty four hours, Diane, leave

(08:54):
it on twenty four hours, because oh, my god, had
saved my life when I had my knee done.

Speaker 6 (09:00):
Oh that's so funny.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
We had the privilege of getting to meet Marvin when
we were out there in Springfield and Brian, my husband
is the trainer at Centennial High schooler Jen McCain went
and so I am so blessed to have the perfect
healthcare provider for this whole adventure.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Well, good luck, good luck, Diane, and easy on the yeah, percoset,
because man, I was like, I wanted to feel when
I felt better. I didn't want something to mask and
that pain. The first like three weeks, Oh my god.
And I had this machine that just had cold water,
really cold water, and you know, kept the swelling down.

(09:38):
But my wife would say do you want a Percocet?
And I go nope, nope, And then all of a sudden,
you know, she'd hear me upstairs. You want a percoset? No?
Could I get a beer? Jeff in Wisconsin? Hi, Jeff,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 6 (09:58):
ADP and the boys beat me Friday? Six feet ppee
Dad Bond two five.

Speaker 7 (10:07):
See I was calling in now.

Speaker 6 (10:08):
Diane kind of sold my thunder, But I don't have
quite a nice way to put it. I do anesthesia
and do joint replacements all the time. So, especially on
the hip replacement, they lop off the top of your
femur and put a new metal ball and rod in there,
and then they resurface the cup that it goes into.
So that's the resurfacing. But yeah, I'm a knee replacement

(10:29):
face still lop off a good piece of bone, both
on the steamer and on the TVA.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
So, Jeff, how often do patients wake up from anesthesia
before they're supposed to?

Speaker 8 (10:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (10:42):
You know what's great? At my place, we actually have
probably half our patients stay awake and watch the procedures
on TV screens.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Oh, I was offered that years ago with the knee surgery.
And you know, I had no pun intended a cutting
edge doctor, and he said you want to watch? And
I go no, because he said, some people wake up
from anesthesia and they're nauseous, and he said, you can
watch this and we'll just numb your knee. But a
lot of people opt for that. How do you feel

(11:11):
about that, Jeff, Oh.

Speaker 7 (11:14):
That's great.

Speaker 6 (11:15):
I get to get them a little bit high and
then talk with them for an hour where they're getting.

Speaker 7 (11:18):
Their knee locked to pieces.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
So it's kind of entertaining, man, And you don't get
squeamish at all when you hear like a saw being
fired up there, drill.

Speaker 6 (11:30):
I always tell them I'd never stay awake on my own,
but I can watch yours all day long.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Thank you, Jeff, Thanks for calling in. Yeah, when you
hear like there's a saw involved in this stuff and
you're like, oh, man, I don't want to be around
for that. I remember when I had microfracture surgery where
they're drilling up into my knee and they showed me
the video afterwards. It's like, I don't want to be
watching this while it happens. I don't want to be crying.

(12:00):
Oh tears. Yeah, Paulie.

Speaker 9 (12:02):
The anesthesia is always the most fun person because you're
looking right at them. They're right next to you, and
they say countdown from ten to three, and then it's out.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
You don't get to one never, Yeah, And you always
want somebody who's just gonna be a little cheery, you know,
when you're gonna go, okay, all right, I'm you know,
I'm gonna get feel a little pinch here, Okay, here
we go, all right, and uh hey when you wake up,
you're gonna be uh you got a new knee. I go, okay,

(12:31):
count countdown from ten. I think I've gotten to maybe six,
maybe like ten nine, and then you're out. And if
you go in for a colonoscopy, you want to talk
about the best sleep of your life. I go in
for a colonoscopy just to get a great, nice sleep.

(12:52):
Go in for a.

Speaker 9 (12:53):
Nap, your third time in this month?

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Yeah, no, yeah, paul. So it's like restoring an old car.

Speaker 9 (12:57):
The knee replacements, a little sheet metal, yeah, little bondo
fresh paint, send you back out.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
White mako yeah, yeah, old school yeah. Uh oh, better
get mako, yes, ton.

Speaker 10 (13:07):
I know they have a protocol in place, but I'm
always afraid they're going to start doing whatever painful thing
they're gonna do, and I'm not completely out yet. And
I remember on a number of OC cases, I'm still awake.
I'm still awake, don't start yet.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
But that's bad for business, Todd, It is bad for business.

Speaker 10 (13:20):
And it's very neurotic on my part to think that
they don't have things in place to make sure I'm
absolutely the patient's out cold before they start operating on you,
or was picking something up your toel.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
You do think the worst case scenario.

Speaker 10 (13:31):
I'm always in a panic anytime I've ever had something done.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
It's like I'm still up. Don't coming to feel that. Wait,
Chris and Syracuse, Good morning, Chris.

Speaker 11 (13:41):
Hey, thanks dance. Hey, a couple of things to throw
at you.

Speaker 12 (13:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (13:44):
Last night in New York, Knicks play by play guy
poked a little fun at the NBA Cup. The Knicks
came back and won on a three pointer with four
seconds left, and the Knicks play by play guy said
with a giggle, never under estimates the heart of an
NBA Cup champion. And you know you two point conversions
last night for Seattle. That's going to be pretty close
to an NFL record and also Dan, I'm not sold

(14:06):
on Seattle either. They could be this year's Minnesota Vikings
and the common denominator Yeah, arnold.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Boy, well, Chris out of nowhere, out of nowhere. By
the way, the Joker at another triple double. Do you
realize that he leads the NBA in rebounds and assists?
So Magic Johnson leading the NBA in assists and rebounds

(14:37):
and then averaging twenty nine points. Again, that's what Joker's doing.
He's leading in both categories. He just passed Kareem I
think for the most assist by a center in history.
He's in his prime and if he he doesn't get bored,

(15:03):
these numbers are going to be wacky. Like you know,
and I knew. I know, we have the new big
man coming into the game. But Joker is playing water
polo on land. He holds the ball up at you
know when you watch water polo, and he's a point center.
He's right there at top of the key and he

(15:23):
is going to find the open man or he'll take
his shot and you can't block his shot because he
puts it so far behind his head. But he had
another triple double. He's going to have the most triple
doubles in NBA history pretty soon, yes, Mark, And.

Speaker 12 (15:40):
For him, he's on scholarship with that championship because yes,
he's one of the few guys that won it without
another All Star currently, even though Jamal Murray is a
great player, but he's on scholarship. He wonted with the
team that drafted him, so he's all good for the
rest of his career.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yeah, and he also got to ease in because he
was his second round draft pick. Nobody knew any about
him even when he got drafted. Then they have a
Taco Bell commercial that came up, so he didn't even
you know, hear the pick. But he got to ease
in a little bit. Jannis got to ease in a
little bit, Kawhi got to ease in a little bit.

(16:15):
Steph Curry eased in a little bit. I get that
helps you know. The expectation level is you got to
be great, and you've got to be great right right away.
That's why what Cooper Flag is doing is incredible. They
may not be off the chart numbers, but it's incredible
that he's eighteen and the hype that it goes along
with this. He's supposed to be great Joker and Yannis.

(16:38):
It's like, you know, maybe they'll make the team, maybe
they'll eventually be a starter, maybe they'll be a role player.
But what we've seen with Cooper Flag with the hype
that surround him, I mean that who else had that
hype other than Lebron Zion maybe yes, Mark.

Speaker 12 (16:58):
When Ben Yama, oh there was hype, I.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
Don't think he had the hype that Cooper Flag had.

Speaker 12 (17:09):
Victor Win Binyama is the one guy we talk about generational.
He's the last generational player since Lebron.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
Yeah, but I think people watched him and you know,
he was out of place on the floor. He didn't
have a point guard, and you know he was kind
of like a deer that's just kind of getting up
on his legs and you know, a fawn and now
you could see all of this. I just I don't
remember the hype being what Cooper Flag was.

Speaker 12 (17:36):
Yes, Mark, maybe because he was in France, yes, But
I remember even when he came over, this guy it
was like Andrew Luckish, like the biggest prospects since l
Way they called Andrew luck This was Victor Winbinyama a
the biggest you know prospects since Lebron James.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
All right, we'll take a break. Lewis Riddick from the
Mothership Well Jonas, we'll talk some college football with him,
and we're back after this.

Speaker 1 (17:59):

Speaker 2 (18:39):
We had a listener wondering if the seahawks three two
point conversions are the most in a game in history. Actually,
they're the most since the Cowboys had three and a
loss to the Browns in twenty twenty. The only team
with more two point conversions in a single game the
Rams when they were in Saint Louis. They had four
in five attempts and a win against the foul Cans

(19:00):
back in two thousand. By the way, we were wondering
who Lane Kiffen is rooting for. I was just reminded
that LSU agreed to honor Lane Kiffen's old Miss bonuses,

(19:25):
including one hundred fifty thousand dollars for getting into the
Bowl if old Miss wins this weekend, five hundred thousand dollars,
seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars to get to the
National Title game, and one million dollars. So we know
who Lane Kiffin is rooting for. That changes the poll question,
I think considerably. Lewis Riddick of the Mothership ESPN NFL

(19:49):
College football analyst, he'll be on the call. He's got
James Madison and Oregon kickoff at seven thirty eastern on TNT.
All right, where do you want to start you want
to start on your game or is there another question
that you want to talk about?

Speaker 14 (20:05):
Well, hey, man, you know me, Dan, I'll go wherever
you want to go. But I can tell you this
all right.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
For the people who don't believe in James Madison. You
would say what, well.

Speaker 14 (20:16):
I would say this, Look defensively, this football team can
get after it. There's no question about that. I mean,
obviously you're gonna look at their level of competition to go, well,
who are the most high powered offenses they played? What
P four offenses that they played? I mean, they played
against Louisville. They lost to Louisville. If we're in that
game all the way though, until Louisville made a couple
of big plays down the stretch. They played Washington State,

(20:38):
you know that game, that team's closely contested. But this
is this is a football team. Look, they've got some
guy on that side of the ball, especially on the
defensive line, that linebacker that can really get going, that
can get going. Now, the problem is Oregon may be
getting healthy in this football game, especially a wide receiver.
If you're talking about guys like the Corey and Moore
coming back, and you know, and Stewart may be healthy

(21:01):
in this game. Gary Bryant Junior, they're three, like three
of their most explosive players. I don't know if Dan
Lanning plays them or not, but man are they They
are formidable. And then look, I mean JM, you can
really run the football. Their quarterback and lines of Barnett
can really get after it. And if you look at
some of the most some of the mobile quarterbacks that
Oregon has played against, they've had some issues with them.

(21:23):
I'm not saying that jam you really is gonna win
this game. You know what it's out here, you know,
in Eugene, in this weather, this stadium, this football team,
Dan Lanning, the number of five stars they got on
the team, they're up against it. I get that. But
that's why you play the games, man, That's why you
play the games. And quite honestly, if you're gonna have
a you know, a group of five type of school
go up against a heavyweight like Oregon, you're gonna want

(21:46):
the match up to kind of look like this one,
to where who knows what jam You can do, who
knows how long they can keep it close. We'll see
what happens.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
I don't know what you thought about Nick Saban's comments
about basically saying, you know, JMU in two minor league
baseball teams, they shouldn't be playing in the baseball playoffs.
I'm just surprised because he's not at Alabama. He's sitting
on the biggest platform in the sport. Yeah, JMU and
Tulane didn't create this scenario. They took advantage of this scenario.

Speaker 14 (22:18):
Sure, So it's it surprised me a little bit only
because look, at one time Nick was coaching at Toledo.
Nick knows what the what you know a Kent State.
He know, he knows what the long, hard road looks like.
And because he traveled it and he ascended to become
the goat, and you know, hats off to him. I

(22:39):
was coached by my respect the hell out of him.
Love the guys, I mean, all all the good. It's
the question. But lookay, I think if you're those schools,
if you're too late in your jamu, you're sitting there going, hey,
wait a minute, man, we don't need to be catching
strays from people when we were just kind of doing
what we need to do, and we didn't. We didn't
put ourselves in here. Y'all put us in here. So
we're gonna line up and play the game. Now, I

(22:59):
get what Nick is saying. I get what he's saying
when you're talking about the teams that are being excluded
from this. When you look at Notre Dame Vanderbilt Textas.
Let's just take those three in particular. We know that
JMU and Tulane probably you know, ninety nine out of
one hundred times those three schools are gonna beat jam
You or or Ortlane. We get that, and quite honestly,

(23:22):
fans probably would rather see those teams in there. And
that's all Nick is saying. So they need to figure
out a way to kind of rectify that if that
means that group of five schools don't get get included
in this. Although I mean I've heard people talk about
the fact that those schools would litigate this thing to
the very end and be like, you can't do that,
you can't keep us out of this. What are you

(23:43):
talking about? I mean, it is what it is. I mean,
deal with it. If you're Texas and if you're if
you're Vanderbilt, and if you're Notre Dame, then when your
damn games, don't worry, don't worry about us, don't try
keeping us out of it. Just how about you just
got to earn your way into it. But I get
what he's saying.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Talking to Lewis Riddick of the Mothership. He'll be on
the call. It'll be James Madison in Oregon kickoff seven
thirty eastern, and uh, a couple other things. Yeah, I'm curious,
did you watch Thursday night game? Like, you're good, what
do you think is Sam Darnold?

Speaker 14 (24:15):
You know, I'm glad you asked that because he talked
about catching straight Sam's been catching a bunch of them
over the past couple of weeks, hasn't he. Yeah, So,
you know, ever since keeps team before out in LA,
people been like, well, there's the Sam. We know, that's
the Sam. We're talking about where's JSN Now, where's you know,
all this feel good you know, uh talk that was

(24:37):
surrounding him. That's not who Sam is. And then last night,
you know, he has he throws two picks and you're
sitting there going, you know, late and again you're going, oh,
here we go again. But what did he do in
crunch time? That's what everyone wants to know. In crunch
time in a big game, National States at home, so
much on the line in the NFC and in that
division overall, what does he do? He delivers some fantastic throws,

(24:57):
big time throws, won the Cooper Cup, won the jaysn
under pressure in the fourth quarter when they need him
the most, and he delivered. He doesn't blink. Everyone else
has blinked talking about him, but he hasn't blinked. And
I love that. I think that kind of game last
night could really for him. As much as you know,
when we've talked to him, he doesn't seem never doubt himself.

(25:19):
He doesn't come off as someone who's sitting there having
these real introspective conversations with himself and trying to find
himself and all that bs. I think last night, though,
even for him, he may have gone, see, I do
have what it takes in order to rise up at
the biggest moments. Now, he had a lot of help
last night, he really did. And you know, one of
the biggest, one of the biggest acquisitions this season is

(25:44):
going to be the acquisition of Rashid Shaheed for Seattle.
And you saw it last night. It was coming. You
saw him, you know, poking and prodding over the past
couple of weeks as far as trying to find his groove.
Then the pot return hits. You know, he's a guy
who's He showed it last week late in the game
against Indianapolis that that was the guy that Sam went

(26:05):
to Kenneth Walker started going last night. The defense gets
some big stops late in that game. They couldn't they
still they still haven't figured out what the help whoku
nakua was doing to him. They still haven't figured that out.
But I mean that which was incredible. Look, Sean McVay
is a freaking I love Sean mcvayh The dude can
scheme up your defense as well as anybody. And Matthew Stafford,

(26:28):
you know, you know what Dan speaking. Look, I'm not
saying Sam Donald Matthew Stafford, right, There was a lot,
There was a while, There was a long time, and
we sat there and we doubted Matthew Stafford. When he
was in Detroit. People wanted to blame Stafford for not
being able to lift what at the time was a
franchise that wasn't very well run and lift them out
of the gutter and put them on the pedestal, you know.

(26:51):
And then he goes to La gets around the right people.
Next thing, you know, he wins a Super Bowl and
now he's gonna probably win the MVP. But I think
with Sam, Sam's in the right spot right now. He's
in the right spot with coach McDonald's. He's in the
right spot with click Kobe and last night could be
a turning point game for him. I really do and
I hope it is.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago with Pooka Nakua.
There's football speed and there's track speed. Yeah, he has
football speed. Ques, I don't know what you know, like
Jerry Rice, like where you go and there's I think
there's similarities and that he he seems to always be
fast enough and if it's in his radius, he's catching it.

(27:31):
So it's a former defensive back. Yeah, what would you
be trying to do with him.

Speaker 14 (27:38):
A lot of times what you saw last night with
Pooka is Look, I've been beating this drum since I
started on TV back in twenty thirteen. Free access to
wide receivers off the line of scrimmage. You're asking for it.
You're asking to get your rear end ripped by teams
that can scheme you up and instinctive wide receivers who

(27:59):
are in luck step with the quarterback if you let
them play seven on seven, which a lot of the
game intoday, pill And I'm not get off my long guy.
I get it. The game is evolved. We're trying to
protect players all that, but a lot of the game
now is geared towards allowing wide receivers and quarterbacks to
put up Star Wars type numbers. One of the things
that you still have at your disposal though, as a
defense is the is the whole idea of the disruption

(28:22):
of timing and rhythm of a passing if you don't
disrupt the timing and rhythm of the rams passing game.
Puka and Matthew Stafford they meet every morning at like
four or five am. The same thing he used to
do with Cooper Cup and Pooka is so damn instinctive
and as you're talking about, has such great functional strength
and speed, and Matthew is this first ballot lock, you know,

(28:46):
sure fire Hall of Fame type caliber quarterback that if
you allow them to just come off the line, use
their motions and shifts, find the zone voids and you're
gonna sit there and you don't disguise your coverage as well,
or you have miscommunications in the back end and you
allowed Puka to just work his magic in between the numbers,
in particular on those deep end cuts that you saw
him running last night. Where he's catching and then he's

(29:08):
off to the races. You're gonna wind up giving up
two hundred and twenty five yards receiving to a single guy.
You've got to know you know who, And I know
this is a dude who's always is in the media
more times than not now for the wrong reasons or
for reasons that don't involve football. But Bill Belichick was
the very best, and even at the you know, in
the in the later moments of his career in New England,

(29:31):
still understood that and made defenses execute those kinds of things,
or you wouldn't play for him. And that's how he
was able to shut down some of the greatest offenses
when he was a deep, when he was a head
coaching coordinate. See, he understands that that one thing is
still something you have in your in your tool, kid,
and if you don't use it, you're just asking for it.
And last night that's how Pooka went off like he did.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
What if you were the GM of the Chiefs, how
are you approaching next season?

Speaker 14 (30:00):
Oh? Boy? Yeah, Brett's a good friend of mine, Brett Veach,
And I'll tell you what first and foremost, I think
you've got to get Patrick at bellkal running back. You
got to. You've got to get him a guy he
can turn around and hand the ball to and he's
probably gonna get you four and a half on average

(30:20):
and maybe rip you know, at least two to three
plus ten plus twenty yard runs a game. So you've
got to You've got to get him a true number
one at wide receiver. You've got to get him an
X that even when the team knows you're gonna throw
it to him, he can still make plays. You've got
to get him that guy. And obviously the offensive line

(30:43):
got banged the season. You saw how bad it became.
You saw him at all, every single every single UH
pass attempt became like it became like playground ball for Patrick.
And Patrick can't be the guy who's constantly running for
his life and trying to and obviously coming off injury.
You don't want him being the number one and number
two rush on the team. He just can't be. Offensive

(31:05):
line has to get healthy. They have to get him
a running back, they have to get him a true
number one. What's the succession plan for Travis Kelsey a
tight end?

Speaker 2 (31:13):
That's a lot there expecting him to retire.

Speaker 14 (31:18):
Even if he doesn't, you still need more juice at
that position. As good as he is, he'll needs someone who,
from a physical perspective, really does inject fear into a
defense in that area, that fifteen to twenty yard area
between the number is because this guy is such a
unique Travis is one of the he's the greatest. He's

(31:38):
going in the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
You think that's the best tight end of all time?
The numbers say he is, well Tony.

Speaker 14 (31:48):
I played against Tony, Tony was. I didn't play against Gronk,
but I played against Tony and Tony was damned near uncoverable.
I played against Keith Jackson when you know he had
just left Philly and went to Miami, and Marino was
throwing and passes. I know what. There's some really really
good tight ends that have played in this league sevement.
But but Travis is right there. He's right at the
very top.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
Have fun tonight, Hopefully we get a competitive game for
a while, and yeah, I think hangs in there. Uh
kick off at seven thirty eastern on TNT Lewis. Thank you.
Uh Yeah, safe travels, happy holidays to you.

Speaker 14 (32:25):
Thanks a lot.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
As always, that's uh Lewis Riddick of the Mothership on
the call. So he's Scott JMU and Oregon that atmosphere.
All you can hope is you surprise him and then
take the crowd out of it. Take a break. Who
had the best week in sports? We'll discuss that more

(32:48):
of your phone calls as well. Back after this.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
Patriots in the Ravens. Boy, this is one of those
the Patriots should win this, but this is this one
would make me a little nervous if I'm a Patriots fan,
because Ravens are favored in this game. JM. You at
Oregon to Lane at Old Miss? Which team? Boy? I

(33:27):
hate saying this. Who loses by less points? JMU? Or
two Lane?

Speaker 10 (33:35):
Yes, Dodd, I'm gonna go with tu Lane losing by
less points?

Speaker 6 (33:39):
All right?

Speaker 2 (33:39):
Okay, Jmu's got a really good defense, but I don't
know if they have a good enough offense. I don't
know much about Tulane. I used to tune in just
to see what their uniforms and their helmets look like
it's like, all right, I'm good. Yeah, Paul.

Speaker 14 (33:58):
It's hard to.

Speaker 9 (33:59):
I think, for the America to believe in a team
that's named after a founding father. Just that doesn't sound
like college football historically. And I think James Madison is awesome.

Speaker 2 (34:09):
I didn't approach it that way, but uh, okay, George Washington,
they did well in March Madness, Yeah, football, not so much.
Sliding into the weekend brought to you by kings Hawaiian
and make sure you pick up a pack. You'll find
him in the bakery or Delhi section of your local
grocery store Kingshwaiian dot Com. Alrighty, Best week in sports, Todd,

(34:30):
I'll start with you. Who had the best week in sports.

Speaker 10 (34:33):
I'm going back to last Sunday, so it's within the
calendar week. Josh Allen and the Bills erasing a twenty
one point deficit, that big win at Foxborough giving it
to them.

Speaker 2 (34:41):
Okay, Seaton, best week in sports. I'm gonna say Trevor
Lawrence had the best weekend. Of course, that was a
monster game for him, one he really needed.

Speaker 12 (34:51):
Marvin Best week in Sports, The New York Knicks, they
won the Prestige, won the Cup. They won the Cup,
and then Jalen Brunson last night game winning three point
the Pacers.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
Yeah, they won the Cup.

Speaker 14 (35:05):
Though.

Speaker 2 (35:05):
We're gonna be talking about that years from now when
somebody says, where were you, and we'll say, well, we
were doing the radio show. We were there when they
won the cup. Paul Best week in Sports.

Speaker 9 (35:18):
I'm kind of a seating on this one, but I'm
going Liam Cohen, the head coach of the Jaguars. People
goofed on him a lot in his press conference, saying
he wasn't given a lot of expectations this year and
they came in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Good. Yeah, but he should have been goofed on in
that press conference.

Speaker 9 (35:31):
True, it was goofy, but I think they judged him
by it and don't realize he might be a really
good coach.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
Wait, he did a great job with Baker Mayfield. I mean,
he had a terrible exit from Tampa Bay, but he's
done well. I think there somebody's going have to check
with this. There's somebody else who deserves credit with the
development of Trevor Lawrence. I think he's the quarterback coach
with the Jags, and I think he was a quarterbacks coach.

(36:01):
I don't, I don't, Yeah.

Speaker 9 (36:04):
Pauline Spencer Whipple the quarterback coach of the Jaguars, might
be he was brought in early twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Where was he in Tampa the prior year? Checking because
this was pointed out to me by somebody. It's like, hey,
Colin has done a really nice job, but you know
they got somebody who's more hands on with Trevor Lawrence
this year. I'm like, okay, yeah, Paulin.

Speaker 8 (36:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (36:27):
Spencer Whipple joined the Jags in twenty twenty five. He
was with the Cardinals, the Arizona Cardinals from nineteen to
twenty four.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
Okay, let's see Paul and Iowa. Hi Paul, what's on
your mind?

Speaker 1 (36:40):
Hey?

Speaker 8 (36:40):
Dan Well? Most valuable back room guy Tyler as the moderator,
that's my vote, But you kind of stole my thunder
with the hundreds of thousands of reasons. Lane Kiffen is
chearing for ole Miss this weekend. So I have a
college football playoff proposal for you. What if instead of
conference champions, the smaller conferences named regular season champions that

(37:05):
played each other in kind of a first four model
during conference championship week to make the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
I would take all of this under advisement. I don't
think they have something that is etched in stone where
you go, okay, that makes this all the sense in
the world. If you have a first four round, you know,
you have those games, and then you have somebody winning
that game, then they get in. I just don't think
you can have that many games. You can't ask college students,

(37:35):
college athletes to be playing eighteen games, and you know
they're approaching that. If you have twelve and then you
have a couple of playoff games. Let's say you play
two playoff games, then you play another playoff game, so
there's three. You're at fifteen games right now, and I think,
you know, you can't look at them as professionals. They're

(37:58):
getting close, but I think asking them to play fifteen, sixteen,
seventeen games is too much. Darren in Oregon, Hi Darren,
what's on your Mindee?

Speaker 8 (38:10):
What was going on?

Speaker 6 (38:12):
Like sea? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (38:13):
I got a bad connection there, Darren Aiden in Utah, Hi, Aiden,
what's on your mind?

Speaker 8 (38:20):
Hey?

Speaker 7 (38:20):
DP? Merry Christmas and happy holidays first and foremost, especially
you U TOADD Merry Christmas. I want to I want
to say, what's gonna happen with the Chiefs? So what
I would do if I was if I was running
the Chiefs. Right, So Kelsey is going to retire, You're
gonna have to replace it mean that Patrick Mahomes meets
the weapon. I also don't think Patrick Maholmes is going

(38:42):
to be one hundred percent start of the season. Yeah,
the LCL two. It doesn't add time, but it doesn't
make it any easier. I didn't. They're going to put
the season as a wash top five packs and then
they're gonna ge Jeremiah Smith and then are going to
go on a whole nother run.

Speaker 2 (38:57):
All right, sure, why not? Yeah? Mahomes sounds like he's
gonna be ready, you know, opening weekend. I mean, God,
good luck coming back from that. I was just coming
back now. I didn't have an LCO, I had an ACO,

(39:18):
but just coming back to be able to walk normally,
just do normal things, even jogging. It was a good
nine months. And you know, you try to put weight on.
Here's the other thing. If it's your you know when
you're gonna plant your knee, plant your leg like that's
a tricky one when you're gonna run and you're gonna

(39:40):
cut and you can't help but think it. And you
know when Brady was got his knee blown out, that's
off his plant foot, and so I mean, I commend
him that he got over that where it's like, you know,
you're going to think about it running backs, talk about
this that you don't want to think about, but you

(40:00):
can't help but think about it when you're going to
make a move and you got something surgically repaired and
in a game like situation and you don't want Mahomes
to be running as much as he did the past
couple of years. Just getting that plant foot where you
feel confident in being able to step into a throw,

(40:23):
that's a lot to ask for him to be ready
for the start of next season. Final hour on this
meet Friday, Ryan Leaf will stop by the studio in
about ten minutes. More of your phone calls as well,
