Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's the final hour on this Meet Friday Dan and
the dan EN's Dan Patrick Show. We came in sports
tired this morning. We're living off fumes. We stayed up
late past our bedtime. But I thought the chief's up
my ten. It was time to go nine nine, And
then all of a sudden, I'm like, yeah, let me
just hold on here for a little bit, maybe some
(00:25):
Lamar magic here. And almost did, almost did. And I
love the fact John Harball was going to go for two.
What a topic of conversation if the touchdown stood, he
goes for two, whether he gets the two point conversion
or not. Stat of the Day has always brought you
by Panini America, the official trading cards of the Dan
Patrick Show. It's available while supplies last. Jalipanio Lime Moonshine.
(00:51):
Early reviews say the flavor is outstanding. I will second that.
I will co sign on that. Go to Danpatrick dot com.
It is available for your consumption. Drink responsibly of course.
Coming up. All right, it's a busy final hour here.
We're going to talk to Matt Lioner, Jerry Ferrara. They
have a new podcast out. They're going to join us
a little bit. Nancy Lieberman, Hall of Famer, will join us.
(01:14):
Coming up here in a moment or two. Update the
poll results there, Seaton o Connor, if you could.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Let's see we've got up there.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
Who enjoys la More started quarterback for USC or an
actor on a hit TV show? Right now, it's fifty
three percent the starting quarterback for USC. Very close though,
fifty three Okay, that's pretty good. Lamar Jackson is more
apparently frustrating than awesome according to our audience. And should
the NFL play games on Friday night? Absolutely not.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
I know it's it's a one off here, and it's
a loophole to be able to play on a Friday night.
But I want high school football to own Friday night.
I know the NFL has sort of taken over everything,
let's leave Fridays alone. And there's actually a law in
place that was put in place in nineteen sixty one
that says you can't play an NFL game in the
(02:08):
second week of September on on a Friday night.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Now there is college football.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
There's been college football on Friday quietly for probably a decade.
Now all right, so poll question for the final hour.
Are we gonna change anything up there?
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Seedon?
Speaker 5 (02:23):
Well?
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Right now, we just put up those are early results
on the actor versus quarterback?
Speaker 6 (02:27):
How that plays?
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Okay? All right, I'll ask Leonard and Jerry farrar that
anything else. I'm excited to eat some food, Okay, Yes.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
I'm really looking forward to that.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Happy.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
It's Friday. You got any big plans this weekend? Dan,
you're gonna do anything fun?
Speaker 2 (02:44):
No, just gonna I'm gonna do some homework. I'm gonna
be in the lab down in the basement, Yeah, down
in the base watching some day breaking down games, absolutely,
like I always do. By the way, it's a meat Friday,
pigs in a blanket, beef, chilly bred bowles and cornbread.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Who has it better than we do? No, buddy? Is
Nancy Lieberman there? Tom?
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Alrighty Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. I'm going to say this.
This is going to sound like I'm, you know, kind
of catering to nance better passer than Kitlyn Clark. Okay,
better passer. I've seen it firsthand, and I'm sure Nancy
would you agree? Are you a better passer than Caitlyn Clark.
Speaker 7 (03:33):
We both did our thing on the basketball court.
Speaker 8 (03:35):
I admire how she pushes the ball up the floor,
her head's up.
Speaker 7 (03:39):
She's seeing her teammates.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
Dan.
Speaker 8 (03:41):
There's been great passers in the history of women's basketball.
Speaker 7 (03:44):
I'm glad to be one of them.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
That's a humble yes, is what that was.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Do you know that we played a pickup game in
Dallas and Dion was in the game Ken Norton Junior.
So Nance is running the point and grown men were
getting hit in the side of the head because they
didn't have their head on the swivel. And if you
ever have played a game with Nance, you have to
have your head on the swivel because she will find
the open person. And I remember, Don's out there, Ken
(04:13):
Norton Junior and you're running the point.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
It was fun. We had a lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
You know.
Speaker 8 (04:18):
People don't realize that for those seventeen years before the
WNBA started, I had to play against guys like you.
You know, I had to play for the Lakers, I
had to play for the Jazz, I had to play
in the usbl My daily routine was going to the
downtown YMCA in Dallas and playing against NBA guys. So
(04:38):
you know my skills were sharpened, right, Iron sharpens iron,
and you guys, I would have loved to have those
seventeen years to play against the Tarassies and the Kelsey Plumbs.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Right yeah. And your nickname, your nickname is Lady Magic.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
So you know you were doing things that probably a
lot of a lot of players weren't going back in
the day.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
And then what was it like you met Muhammad Ali?
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Right?
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (05:04):
He was my friend and my hero for thirty seven years.
He changed my life. He taught me all the really
the soft skills and the tough skills that I have today.
He taught me to respect everybody, to fear nobody. He
taught me to be an everyday champion. He taught me
about racism, He taught me about philanthropy, taught me about
(05:24):
being an entrepreneur and how how to lift your sport.
And I'm grateful that this man was in my life
for all those years, and dan like those last ten
or twelve years for me to be with him and
his home in Phoenix and feed him and put his
bib on and hold his hand and just tell him
(05:44):
how grateful I was for everything that he instilled into
my life and supportive even when I was hired. You know,
the second female hired in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings.
Second phone call was to the Alis. He came to
my first game in Phoenix.
Speaker 7 (05:59):
I mean he was. That's so supportive of me.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
That's great.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
And one more thing, nance used to play pickup games.
You went to Rutgers Rucker Park.
Speaker 7 (06:06):
Didn't you practically lived in Rutger Park. I love it there.
I would take the A train from Far Rock Away.
Speaker 8 (06:14):
It was about forty minutes into Manhattan, switched trains, I
believe it was the E get off at one hundred
and fifty fifth walk into Rutger you know, have the
T shirts in my jacket so I look menacing and
the guys would look at me like little girl.
Speaker 7 (06:31):
You know, I was just a little skinny.
Speaker 8 (06:32):
Redheaded kiddo, and they go, little girl, you lost And
I'm like, no, are you? And they're like do you
know this is Rucker Park? And I'm like, yeah, I know,
like great people play. Here is your name Rutger And
they would say no. I said, good, it ain't your part.
And I have lifelong friends, guys who protected me.
Speaker 7 (06:54):
Rode the train with me.
Speaker 8 (06:56):
Actually, those experiences taught me my mother not to be
racist or judgmental, because it was his love and kindness
and bond with people that didn't look like me.
Speaker 7 (07:08):
It was amazing.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Nancy Lieberman Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, You've called a
few WNBA games before I get to Caitlin Clark watching her.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
How would you sum up this WNBA season.
Speaker 8 (07:22):
It's historic, It's amazing, I'm sure, Commissioner, you know, Kathy
Engelbert and Adam Silver and Mark Tatum, everybody are looking
at this and saying, we had hoped that this would happen.
We the players of my generation, had hoped this would happen.
And to see Jesse enormous ratings. I think we're up
(07:44):
like three hundred and forty six percent. Ratings were on
all platforms. Social media has been a part of it.
The players that came out of college really brought a
lot of their cachet to the WNBA. And there's a
healthy versus respect for the legends of the game that
are you know, currently playing like the Tarasses and you know,
(08:05):
just you know, like the Tamika Catchings and the Sue
Birds and some of the really great players that were
a part of you know, the last you know, twenty
five plus years.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
All right, you've done a couple of capelin. How many
games have you done Caitlyn Clark A couple.
Speaker 7 (08:24):
I went to see her in college. We got to
be friends.
Speaker 8 (08:27):
Who won my award, and I promised I'd go see
her play, And I did her last game in Iowa.
I recently did the game in Dallas, the w NBA game.
She's just exceptional, I mean.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
But being treated differently on the court as a rookie.
Speaker 8 (08:47):
Well, when you say being treated differently, is the physicality there, well, yes,
of course, if the physicality is there, you know, she
has to earn her stripes. You know, seventeen percent of
all flagrant fouls this year in the w There's been
thirty two as of the other day, and five of
them have been against Caitlyn Clark. But let me say this,
(09:10):
she has taken everything that's come her way, and she's
Look what the Indiana Fever have done since the All
Star break. I think they're seven and one, they've clinched.
They're eighteen and sixteen. They had not made the playoffs
in eight years, and she, you know, Boston and Mitchell
(09:30):
are just crushing it right now. They've got a lot
going on. I give Christy Sides a lot of credit
their coach.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Okay, but why is she I don't want to say
she's polarizing, but it feels like Caitlin Clark is controversial
for some reason, Like how did we get to this point?
Speaker 5 (09:49):
You know what?
Speaker 8 (09:50):
We got to this point because this point has happened before.
You know well enough that in nineteen eighty four, when
Michael Jordan came into the NBA, the ratings in the
NBA not great Chicago Stadium was a third full. And
he comes in from college winning the championship at North Carolina,
and you know, the Jordan rules are in effect.
Speaker 7 (10:12):
They're knocking, you know, the heck out of them.
Speaker 8 (10:15):
He's getting the lions here of the attention, the games
are now getting put all of his games are on TV.
And he just was a polarizing figure and Tiger Woods
was like that.
Speaker 7 (10:27):
When he went to the PGA as well.
Speaker 8 (10:29):
He changed the total economics of golf the same way
Michael Jordan changed the financial economics of the NBA. And
I think with that there's going to be it's human
nature sometimes to have some envy or some jealousy and
it's happening now to Caiton Clark, and there's nothing wrong
(10:50):
with wanting to be a part of that. But everybody
in this league's a part of the success right now.
Angel Is you know, we haven't had a chance to
see Cam and Brank Chrisse She hurt herself. Rakia Jackson
from Tennessee's Amazing Angel Reest just broke the record, the
WNB record as for rebounding in a single season as
(11:11):
a rookie.
Speaker 7 (11:12):
She's been enormous in what she's done. And Camella Cardozo.
I mean, there's some great young talent along.
Speaker 8 (11:20):
With Caitlyn Clark, and you know other players wanted to
see what you got. All right, can you take the
next level? You know, Diana Trossi said it right early.
She says, you know, these players, including Kaitlin, come to
the w and they're playing against you know, grown women
who have been at.
Speaker 7 (11:37):
This for a long time. It's okay.
Speaker 8 (11:40):
It's called competitiveness. It's called you know, a will to win.
Speaker 7 (11:44):
And if you have the skill set, if you're if
you're a great player, you're going to be great. No
matter what. She's a great player.
Speaker 8 (11:51):
She's not just breaking Caitlin rookie records anymore, She's breaking
W records. Angel Reese isn't just breaking rookie record. They're
breaking W records and you have to respect that. But
there's also gonna be players that are.
Speaker 7 (12:08):
Gonna be tough on you. That's just the nature of
the beast, I know.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
But they're trying to make this some Rookie of the
Year race with Angel Reese, and I said, just stop.
And I'd likened Angel Reese the way she rebounds to
Moses Malone and just offense and defense. She was just
She's relentless. Caitlin Clark is just different. This is a
different stratosphere. Caitlin Clark should be runner up to Asia
(12:34):
Wilson for MVP this season, League value, team, value, playoffs
and doing things that we have not seen before by
a rookie.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Any any problems with any of those.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
Comments, No, I don't. I think she is definitely First.
Speaker 8 (12:49):
Let me let me just state this, Asia Wilson is
the best basketball player in the world.
Speaker 7 (12:54):
She's unbelievable and as great as.
Speaker 8 (12:59):
She is as on the court and the MVP of
the Olympics is her motor and her leadership.
Speaker 7 (13:07):
I mean, people want to be around her. Kids just
adore her.
Speaker 8 (13:10):
She's got mega endorsements, her own shoe, a great book
that I believe.
Speaker 7 (13:15):
You know, is a bestseller.
Speaker 8 (13:18):
She she's the top of whatever list you have, and
then you have a list of other people who are
having superior years. I mean, Ifisa Collier is just having
a killer season right now with Minnesota, they're one of
the top teams in the league that are gonna buy
for a championship. Cheryl Reives Reeves is a great coach
(13:38):
or Olympic coach. You know, I look at what Sabrina
has done. You know, this season is her best season,
you know, getting to the rim more not just being
you know.
Speaker 7 (13:48):
Labeled a three point shooter.
Speaker 8 (13:50):
Caitlin Clark is in that next grouping under Asier Wilson
of players who should be considered. And look, I know
there's people that love Lebron James, don't like Lebron James,
love Michael Jordan, don't like you know, the competitive who
is better? What generation is better? You know you're going
(14:11):
to have that. That's just what sports is. But we
shouldn't hate on somebody who's actually doing her job and
she's doing it really well, an exceeding expectation.
Speaker 7 (14:23):
And a lot of these young players in the league.
Speaker 8 (14:26):
That's why the w is so appealing right now, and
people all it's one of the most rated leagues in
the world. And you know, I'm proud to be a
part of it. I'm proud to see what's happening with
the game. And you know, I hope that the great
players in the league right now, whether it's Breonna Stewart
(14:46):
or Collier or you know, Tarasi, Britney Griner, I want
them to continue to shine with Asia and some of
the other players. But these rookies, they don't want to
be labeled rookies. They're coming after you. They're coming for
your job. They want guarantee contracts. They want to have
long term success and make a lot of money.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Great to catch up with you again, Nancy.
Speaker 7 (15:11):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Dan.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
I think I could still take you on the court.
Speaker 7 (15:14):
You couldn't go.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Leftuh, we know what happened when I was on the court.
Speaker 8 (15:20):
Nance Hey, you know what, You're bigger and stronger and
better when we played than I had ever thought. And
I did tell you that you are a legit basketball
player at a high level.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
And I think you said handsome too at the time.
Speaker 7 (15:34):
Absolutely always handsome.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Just don't want to misquote you. Thank you, Nan, It's
always great to see you.
Speaker 7 (15:42):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Nancy Lieberman. Yeah, I'm telling you. On the court, great great,
great passer. She just didn't when able to her and
Cheryl Miller didn't get the benefit of playing in the WNBA.
Nance signed at age fifty to play in the WNBA.
(16:04):
She played one game, had a couple assists, and then
she was released after that.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
I mean, she's in those stories.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
She would go to Rutger Rutger Park, this little kid
going to Rutger Park to play pickup.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
But yeah, Dion's Gardner.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
We're playing Ken Norton Junior like it's a serious basketball game.
And she she's tough man, she's tough, known her a
long time good person. All right, take a break. Now,
we're gonna talk podcasts with Matt Lioner Jerry Ferrar. They
have a new podcast and it's called Throwbacks Podcast. We'll
(16:43):
find out exactly what it's all about, and we'll ask
them the pole question, what is it to be the
starting quarterback at USC or a big time actor in
LA Is that sort of paraphrasing Seaton.
Speaker 4 (16:57):
Who enjoys Los Angeles more, starting quarterback of USC or
an actor on a hit TV show.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Okay, well ask the quest I'm leading with that. Questions
coming up there.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
We'll take a break. We're back after this. Fox Sports
Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation.
Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio dot com
and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to listen live.
Speaker 9 (17:21):
He's Mike Krmen, I'm Dan Bayern. We have a fantasy
football podcast called I Want Your Flex.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
That's right, Dan.
Speaker 10 (17:28):
Every week we're gonna scour the waiver wire to find
the pickups to turbo boost your fantasy lineup, sit starts,
fantasy football players rankings to get you ready to dominate
the competition.
Speaker 9 (17:39):
Listen to I Want Your Flex with Mike Carmon and
Met Dan Byer on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts and
wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Matt Lioner Jerry Ferrara co host of the new podcast
it's called Throwbacks. It's a weekly podcast from Sinclair and
they are sharing stories about uh well leading up to
how one became a star in TV, one became a
star in football. They talk about family life. It's available
(18:07):
on YouTube, Apple, podcast, Spotify, all the podcast platforms. All right, guys,
let me ask you the poll question here, Seaton give
Matt and Jerry the pole question.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Yeah, the pole question is who enjoys Los Angeles more?
The starting quarterback for USC or an actor on a
hit TV show.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Okay, Matt, I'll start with you.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
I saw this poll question guys on X and I
started laughing. Thought it was fantastic. Listen, I gotta be
honest with you. Being at quarterback in LA when USC
was the only real football team definitely had its perks. Guys.
It definitely had its perks. It did, it did. And
(18:50):
I will say this before Jerry answers. I did act
a little bit back in the day. I did. I was.
My first acting role was on Judging Amy as an extra. Okay,
judging as an extra. I didn't get paid money, so
it wasn't illegal back then. Okay, so I kind of
had the best of both words. Now. I don't know
if Jerry's ever thrown a football in a real football game,
but I'll let him answer. I think I win. I'm
(19:12):
gonna say that though.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Okay, but but Jerry, you were in Entourage, and I
think I think you guys might have overlapped. Was entourage
just starting when you were leaving USC? I think round
four five was your last year. Matt, does that sound right?
Speaker 3 (19:29):
Okay?
Speaker 5 (19:29):
H five?
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Uh so, Jerry, how how big was entourage you guys
when you went out in Los Angele? Did you own
Los Angeles when you were filming?
Speaker 11 (19:40):
Look, this question made me there for some reason. I
don't know why. I feel like I'm gonna screw it up.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Statute of limitations is over, so don't worry about that.
Speaker 11 (19:49):
All that being said, Look, it is hard not to
say you want to be the quarterback on one of
the most iconic college football teams of all time. I'm
gonna go with that as my answer. How I had
no injury risks. I never had to travel outside of
LA I was over twenty one. Not that Matt probably
had any problems getting into clubs back then, but you know,
(20:11):
I could go out have some pops.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
You know.
Speaker 12 (20:13):
So it was a pretty great run.
Speaker 11 (20:15):
And that's why I think makes Matt and I such
a fun pairing is we could have easily been running
around together back then. And now you cut to twenty
years later, as some fathers and uh, basically in a
whole new chapter. Here we are.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Well, what was the interaction prior to starting this podcast?
How well did you guys know each other?
Speaker 11 (20:34):
Yeah, I had never met Obviously, I know a lot
about Matt, but I never met the guy before. But
you know, the minute his name came up for me,
I said, oh, there's so much fun overlap. I'm New York,
he's LA. We both lived in LA. We both have
kids that are very young at this point. So and
the minute we talked, it was, you know, we went
on like a podcast blind date.
Speaker 12 (20:55):
It was we hit it off.
Speaker 11 (20:57):
You know, he wanted to see me again, and here
we are one episode.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
What made you want to do a podcast? Man?
Speaker 5 (21:05):
You know, it's it's a good question, Dan. I always
you know, there's the world of podcasting, right, I feel
like everybody has one, and I just I really wanted
to wait until the opportunity, just like the perfect opportunity.
And for me, it was always like I really want
to do it with somebody, and I didn't know who
that was. And then when Jerry's name kind of came up,
(21:25):
I was like, dude, Turtle from Entourage, He's and to
Jerry's point, like I hung with Connolly a little bit,
one of Jerry's boys. Like I was that was the
only guy from that show that I had an acquaintance with.
But when they said Jerry, I was like, dude, I know,
he's a he's a diehard sports fan. Great just a
great dude, kind of like a guys guy. And then
(21:45):
in the similar situation me with just little kids and
married and just like going through the chaos of life,
I like, Okay, this could really work, and we talked
on the phone. Our bromance started right away. I think
we talked for like an hour on the phone, just
like trying to get to know each other. But it
was super normal, is super easy, and it's just been
like that ever since. And it's We're just gonna have
a lot of fun, you know. I think it's gonna
(22:07):
be very relatable. I'm kind of come from the athlete perspective.
He comes from the fan perspective, but he's probably more
knowledgeable about sports than a lot of athletes are obviously,
just uh, just with his love for sports in general.
So it's a really fun. I think gonna be a
fun listen, having great guests on and just talking. Man
like we're and we're in the trenches in everyday life.
(22:28):
The reason why, Jerry, you were nervous about this is
because you know your wife is listening and if you
say anything stupid it could it's gonna come back to
get you. And by the way, I'm the same way.
I'm married to a Cuban lawyer. We have to be
very very careful what we say on this podcast.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
True, but you're bringing that New York fan Jerry, and
you guys can be annoying, obnoxious. Uh been tough times
for New York sports fans here recently.
Speaker 11 (22:56):
Yes, but we have the Knicks, which is all I
really care about.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
Point.
Speaker 11 (23:00):
I can't get too mad at the Giants, even though
it might be a long year, but they've given me
so much joy beating the Pats and the Yankees obviously
all those years.
Speaker 12 (23:07):
Yeah, I'm so locked in on the Knicks. Joe. Matt
mentioned I can't throw a football. He's right, but.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
Dan, you could catch you.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
Remember, Oh, I do so, Matt.
Speaker 11 (23:16):
Matt when we do the show has his heisman right
near him. I brought this out for you, Dan, my
beach Ball MVP award.
Speaker 6 (23:23):
Matt.
Speaker 11 (23:24):
Dan presented me with this because Dan was calling the
game in twenty eleven, he presented me with my only
athletic achievement on camera.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
Ever, he was matt.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
He was so competitive he was now there no understand
he's going against the supermodels that there were there were? Uh,
Megan Markle was playing defensive back against Joe. Yes, you did.
You did light her up. Uh, but you were like
a Julian Edelman type. And oh my god. When the
(23:54):
game ended, he you would have thought he won the
super Bowl. You would have thought he won an Academy Awards.
Speaker 5 (24:01):
Is that the proudest thing on your resume, Jery, is
that it's up going with that.
Speaker 11 (24:06):
Getting this at court side at the Knicks game is
number one, and this might be number two. And Dan,
who I know for a long time, and love Gate.
I think I teared up when I walked away. I
think I had like a lone tier right down my face.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Yes, yeah, I think you said I feel like Vince
Young beating USC.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
I think that's what you said. Was that a direct quote?
Speaker 11 (24:29):
That is not a direct crow? No, I would not
say that. And I'm already getting defensive of my boy here.
Speaker 5 (24:36):
I mean yeah, I mean, gosh, I was at Texas.
I mean We have Michigan Texas this weekend, and I
was at Texas a couple of weeks ago, sat down
with Quinn yours and I tell you what, guys like,
it's what almost twenty years removed incredible game. We you know,
it's obviously I think one of the best games of
all time in college football is not the best, and
I just still just still I can't escape Vince Young
(24:59):
like the night mayor, So Dan, I appreciate you, you know,
bringing that up, because I will deal with it. Tomorrow.
There'll be a fan on and they'll be like, hey,
I was on Bowl Vince Young really got his knee
was down. Huh wait. I'm like, oh my gosh, guys,
can we just stop at this game.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
The podcast is called Throwbacks. It's a weekly new podcast
with Matt Leonard and Jerry Ferrara. Now, you guys dealt
with high highs here. Matt, you know, national championship and
a Heisman. Then your football career ends. Jerry, you had entourage,
then entourage ends. Now you've had other acting gigs, but
dealing with that high But then you go to that
(25:39):
phone's not ringing as much. People aren't as interested in
have you guys, is that something that would be explored
on the podcast of everybody talks about the highs, it's
the lows where you really find out about yourself.
Speaker 11 (25:53):
For me, yeah, it's actually something I have queued up
for next week's episode. I want to because I do
want to tell this this story, and uh yeah, it
does involve going back, even if you go back like
right before COVID and then what that did to the
business for me, and then I turned down a job,
which at the time I was getting job offers, I
didn't think. I'm like, I just didn't want to do
(26:14):
this show cut to they did ninety eight episodes, so
basically i'd be retired at this point.
Speaker 12 (26:25):
I'm not I'm gonna save it. I'm a holder for
us DP.
Speaker 11 (26:29):
But all I'll say is I would have had to
move to Hawaii, which sounds like a bad thing or
a great thing. I looked at it like, I don't
want to be in Hawaii for seven years. So yeah,
I'm going to talk about all that stuff. I always
say with La too. La is an amazing place to live,
and when you're high, it's it's increading like it's just
the best place ever. I've experienced it. When the phone
(26:50):
does stop bringing and maybe you're not invited to the
coolest party in the world, it could be a very
lonely place. And this is before family and stuff. So
I've experienced. I'm going to talk about everything.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Speaking of high I do have Jerry's bong from Onto
It right, that's right, Like show used games used bong
that I have back here that he signed and signed
it as Turtle, And you said I never signed anything
as Turtle, but you signed the bong as Turtle.
Speaker 11 (27:18):
So well, I figure you've done more movies than I have,
So I figured, like I owed it to you.
Speaker 12 (27:22):
This said. Dan's IMDb page is longer than mine.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
So, Matt, when the phone stops ringing, when you're no
longer a quarterback, how did you process that? Well?
Speaker 5 (27:32):
The last time, this is a funny story. The last
time the phone rang for me, Dan, I was on
an elliptical and twenty four hour fitness and Buffalo Bills
called me and I had that terrible last game. I
was already checked out. But that was the last time
the phone rang. And you know, for me, I was
already done. You know, I didn't have the luxury of
retiring on my own or like this is gonna be
(27:53):
my last year, like it just it just ended, and
I was there was a big sense of relief, I
think because I was just injuries mental, like I was
just ready to move on. But then time passes and
you're like, well, like who am I? Especially as an athlete,
I think we always go through like your identity right
when you're done. It's like am I a football player?
Am I this? Who am I? What's the next what's
(28:15):
the next step? Fortunately I was able to get into
Fox right away and do the job and grow into
what we are in Big New Kickoff, which is the
best and I love my job, but it was challenging,
and I think this pod is going to cover just everything,
like Jerry and I is. I think our number one
goal is like we just want to be like authentic
to ourselves, authentic to who's listening, relatable, Like just because
(28:38):
I was an NFL player doesn't mean like I had
this luxurious life. So I went through a lot of
hell personal things, like you know, just a lot of
stuff that I dealt with that was really really challenging.
And so I think to your point, nothing's off limits,
you know, like we just We're just kind of like
two guys going through life with kids and we love sports,
and we we've had we've had. Like you said, the
(28:58):
ups were great, but then there's also a lot of
downs and how do you kind of go through that.
So we'll cover all of that. I think we'll cover
all that. We'll have We'll have a lot of guests
on too that will probably be able to tell their
story as well, which is really cool.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Closer to winning a championship USC Football or the Knicks,
I know my.
Speaker 11 (29:19):
Answer, but I'll let you I know, I know my answer.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
Who did the Knicks pick up this offseason? Did you
guys get anybody?
Speaker 11 (29:25):
Michel Bridges? The Nova Knicks strong and they rest. Yes,
we're running it back with Bridges, I.
Speaker 5 (29:32):
Would I would probably say the Knicks look Look my
Trojans looked good last week. They looked good last week.
But we are a long ways away from winning the
national championship. I think we're a couple of years away.
But I have faith removing the right jew the Knicks.
The Knicks had and really quick and I watched the
Knicks playoff game with Jerry last year and by the way,
(29:53):
I almost had a heart attack. Watching him watch his
next play. By the way, they were up, I like,
I don't even know they were up by say fifteen
at some point or ten. I'm like, oh, this game's
in the back. He's like, it's not over. I've seen
this many times. I'm like, I'm like, bro, you are psychotic, dude,
Like it's so like literally he was. He was watching
like this the whole time, like didn't move. I'm like,
(30:14):
that's a true story. I was like, you were insane, dude.
I don't know how you guys do this.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
So Jerry, you may want.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
You'd concur the knickser closer to a championship, obviously.
Speaker 11 (30:24):
I think so, I do you know the expanded playoff
system in college? Who knows, Maybe you get Cinderella stories,
which I think is gonna be really cool this year.
No longer do you lose like a game or two
in your season's kind of over. But yeah, I just look,
I think the Knicks are close. It's it's not great
that they're, you know, in the East with the Celtics,
who are a beast. But I am I'm I'm ready
for some football, But man, am I ready for some
(30:46):
basketball too.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
Matt, we were in a movie together.
Speaker 5 (30:51):
So was a house bunny.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Yeah yeah, Now now I wasn't in a scene with you.
I was an officer who a ra Anna Faris. Uh
Sandler always put me in a police uniform. He thought
that was so funny that I'd have a mustache on
his police officer.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
But you played you. I played a police officer.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
And finally some of our best work, man, some of
our best work.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
That's that's they're still talking about that, they're still.
Speaker 5 (31:19):
I was with Sean Salisbury. I was in the team
with Sean Salisbury and uh Anna was in it. And
actually this is a true story. So that day we
shot at the mansion and everyone was like, oh they managed.
I'm like no, we were like shooting a scene, you
know whatever in the in the pool is a pool
party scene. And I brought my soundbab. I brought my
(31:42):
young Cole, who's seventeen, my mom, My mom came and
Cole was probably two, I don't know. That was like
two thousand and seven or six, or that was right
out of college. And Demi Moore was was Demi Moore's
I think it was a rumor who was in it.
One of her daughters was in it. And Demi Moore
was sitting with my mom on like the front lawn
(32:03):
babysitting coal while we were shooting the scene. It's a
true story.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
It was.
Speaker 5 (32:06):
It was awesome. I'm like, what is my life right now?
I'm in a Sandler movie, by the way, shirtless. I'm like, dude,
I do not want to be shirtless in this movie.
And uh, I actually I actually still randomly get texts
because the movie, the movie is good, like it still
plays and I still uh still get texts every once
in a while from it. So I'm proud of that work.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
But did you go to the Playboy Mansion when you
were at USC.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
I never, and that never, not even close, never even
stepped foot in it outside of that, So did Jerry
ask me? That?
Speaker 3 (32:34):
Did Jerry you?
Speaker 6 (32:35):
Jerry? Did? I?
Speaker 11 (32:37):
I've been to the question gonna lie. I still have
some I still have some pajamas that I just don't
have the heart to throw away because I have some
good memories going. Yes, uh, and we shot an episode
of ANSO. I was there as well. But shooting there
is a little different than going to old school half party,
that's for sure.
Speaker 12 (32:55):
I've been a handful of.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Time, you know, it's weird to say this, but I
it was depressing when I went to the Playboy Mansion
because the interior is stuck in the seventies, true, and
like it was. I remember I had Drew Carey and
Ron Jeremy talking to me. I mean, how many times
(33:17):
do you start a story like that? So I got
Drew Carrey and Ron Jeremy asking me sports questions. They
had all of the waitresses were playmates with paint. They
didn't have clothes on, they had paint on their body.
And then Heff came down with three playmates and they
were trying to prop him up and have him dance
(33:37):
a little bit. And I don't know, it didn't have
what I thought it was going to have.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
I guess I think.
Speaker 11 (33:45):
You gotta been around going there in like the seventies.
I think if you wanted to.
Speaker 12 (33:49):
Really get the full experience.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
You know, I was a nobody in the seventies. I
couldn't have gotten in unless I.
Speaker 5 (33:55):
Was just I'm just picturing you and Ron Jeremy talking sports.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
Then sorry, we were going to do a podcast together. Yeah,
but just let you know throwbacks. Hey, good luck with
the podcast. And so it comes out weekly It's available
on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Sinclair is the one
putting this out. Throwbacks Matt Liner, Jerry far Thank you guys,
(34:20):
always great to talk to you.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Appreciate it. Have fun up there in Michigan.
Speaker 5 (34:23):
Matt, Thanks Dan, thanks for having us man appreciate it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 12 (34:27):
Good to see us.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
See you buddy. All right, we'll take a break. Last
call for phone calls. What we learn, what's in store
for Monday.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
After this, be sure to catch the live edition of
The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern, six
am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
Wapp alrighty, A lot of fun, a lot of fun today.
So you got football tonight. Packers are getting two over
unders forty nine and a half. Expecting a little offense
here forty nine and a half.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Let me see.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
Underpassing yards Jordan Love two fifty six and a half.
Jalen Hurts two forty one and a half. Saquon Barkley
over under rushing yards sixty four and a half. Looking
at some of these betting lines as well. Patriots are
getting eight and a half against the Bengals. That's the
(35:23):
big number. And then Cardinals getting six and a half
versus the Bills, Broncos getting six against the Seahawks. Everything
else is like one, two, three four point spreads. Rams
are getting four and a half against the Lions. Games
coming up this weekend. Final results of the poll question.
Speaker 4 (35:43):
So happy you asked, dan uh, Let's see who enjoys
La Moore, the starting quarterback for USC or an actor
on a hit TV show right now the starting quarterback fifty.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
Four of the votes. Certainly back in the early two thousands.
Speaker 4 (35:58):
Yeah, yeah, lamar je is way more frustrating than awesome.
And should the NFL play games on Friday nights. Absolutely
not at sixty six percent of the vote. Not a
lot of great football.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Texas at Michigan and then Tennessee and North Carolina State
just because they're ranked. I don't know if you look
at that and go, boy, that's going to be great.
Colorado Nebraska that is going to be really good. Neither ranked,
but that one should be tasty there, All right, let
me see Keith and Nashville.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
Hey, Keith, what's on your mind?
Speaker 5 (36:32):
What up?
Speaker 8 (36:32):
DP?
Speaker 5 (36:33):
First time?
Speaker 6 (36:34):
Long time?
Speaker 13 (36:35):
Six three in a saw to twenty seven? God, I'm
headed to Chicago from Nashville this weekend for a bachelor
trip that I have a pie to the face bet
with Polly. The line for the game is minus four
and a half Bears. I'm willing to say Titans win
by a touchdown, so minus six and a half. Titans.
(36:55):
Don't sleep on the Titans.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
DP stuck it behind the glass. Uh he's saying the
Titans win by a touchdown? Wow? I think he? Is
he giving you six and a half?
Speaker 5 (37:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (37:08):
I felt like it right?
Speaker 14 (37:09):
Is that confirmed?
Speaker 3 (37:10):
I think so.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
He said they're going to win by a touchdown, so
you get six and a half. Are you interested in
a pie to the face six and a half points
at home with Chicago and Caleb?
Speaker 3 (37:21):
What could go wrong?
Speaker 6 (37:22):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (37:22):
Yes, surezza pie of the faith? Oh do we want
to ruin it now?
Speaker 5 (37:29):
No?
Speaker 2 (37:29):
I wouldn't be pro and I don't think I want
you to get a pie of the face. By the way,
on the Gambling Podcast yesterday, Shane and Irving fell in
love with former New Mexico State quarterback Diego Pavia. Last season,
he didn't produce for Shay. Fast forward to twenty twenty four,
Shae took Virginia Tech minus thirteen and a half against
Diego Pavia's new school, Vanderbilt. Well, Shae recalled this. He's
(37:58):
he's going through TSA at the airport. He's going to
the Texas Michigan game yesterday, and uh, this is how
it sounded.
Speaker 5 (38:06):
You know who led one of the biggest upsets in
college football last week, Diego Pavilla for Vene no No.
Speaker 6 (38:15):
I got so much on Twitter about this behind I
stated him.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
All right, God, that's right.
Speaker 6 (38:23):
I laid thirteen and a half and even money line
me that people. I have been believe in him all year,
last year, and he be over and over again and
it's still going on at twenty twenty four.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
Oh, just a sampling of the gambling podcast available Dan
Patrick dot com.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
So is the Jilopano Lime moonshine.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
It's available while supplies last, and it tastes great.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
This day in sports history, Paul.
Speaker 14 (38:50):
A couple of quickies Urban Shocker nineteen twenty four the
San Louis Browns. He pitched two complete games in one
day against the White Sox. Show on White Sox lost
two in one day, worse than they do now. How
about this for La Dodgers fans. Fernando Valenzuela set the
rookie record of seven shutouts.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Dang nineteen ninety five. Cal Ripkin Junior breaks Lou Garrigg's
record by playing in his twenty one hundred thirty first
consecutive game. I think we got that DBD as well
for a Christmas gift. In ESPN Chris Berman's call of
cal Ripkin breaking the record there, I'm like, Okay, Merry Christmas.
Speaker 15 (39:28):
That was definitely a gift for Christmas.
Speaker 3 (39:29):
Anybody got a weekend upset here?
Speaker 5 (39:31):
Paul?
Speaker 14 (39:32):
I have a light upset, even though I'm picking the
Lions to win the Super Bowl and picking the Rams
to win the opener.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
Oh, light upset. Matt Stafford coming back. Yes, Ton could
be foolish of me.
Speaker 15 (39:42):
But I think the Broncos are going to beat the
Seahawks outright with bow knicks and the debut in Seattle.
I'm surprised that it's a touchdown point spread for the Seahawks.
Speaker 3 (39:50):
Okay, anybody else have anything Titans over the Bears and
he it's been hanging. That was a personal wow. Personal
that's front row front row versus front row. What'd you
learn today?
Speaker 5 (40:04):
Todd? Hall of Famer Nancy.
Speaker 15 (40:06):
Lieberman was nicknamed Lady Magic, spent a lot of time
playing at Rutger Park in New York, and idolized Muhammad Ali.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Yeah, I didn't know she spent that much time with
Muhammad late in his life. Seaton O'Connor was survived yesterday's
rough weather. Rich eisend did in Kansas City. Marvin Todd's
eating ice cream before dinner.
Speaker 14 (40:21):
Paul Marvin does like the Bears?
Speaker 3 (40:25):
What did I learned to.
Speaker 15 (40:26):
Joe Clatfield's Notre Dame schedule between the booke nd Games
of A and M and USC are like a bunch
of scrimmager as.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
Wow, Simply safe home Security was simply save twenty four
to seven monitoring agents act within five seconds of receiving
your alarm. Is it simply safdan dot com to save
twenty percent today? No safe like simply safe. Thanks our
pleasure to serve you. Hope you have a great weekend, everybody.
We look forward to talking to you on Monday.
