Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Final Hour on this Tuesday, Dan and the Dan Nuts
Dan Patrick Show. One million, one hundred and ninety three
thousand dollars. Happy Bobby Bonia Day, Another paycheck from the
New York Mets. The gift that keeps on giving, and
each July first through twenty thirty five, he gets one million,
one hundred and ninety three thousand from the New York Mets.
(00:28):
Congratulations Bobby. That's a pretty good deal though by a
Bobby bo Now. I don't know what the deal was initially,
but to get it extended that far out and to
get those checks one point one million, almost one point
two million every year for the next ten years gues poning.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
It was nineteen ninety nine and the Mets had to
get out of Bobby Bonia's contract. They owed him just
under six million dollars and they had to do it
immediately to get it off the books so they could
go after I think Mike Musina the picture and it
precluded them. The agent for Benia knew that they knew
they had to and created a payment plan of about
(01:11):
one point one to nine million dollars to be deferred
until twenty thirty five, but payments every year from two
thousand to twenty thirty five, and it gathers interest, so
it goes up a little bit each year.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
So he got thirty five million dollars forty million dollars
based off of six million dollars.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Is that right?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
They owed him six million, they deferred it, and they've
been paying him, and we'll pay him to twenty thirty five.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah, it'll be about thirty two million dollars with the
ups and downs in it.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Alrighty, final hour here, we'll talk to Bobby Marks ESPN
Front office insider. We'll talk about some of the moves
that were made NBA free agency. No major move, but
I think there was a lot of good moves, moves
that are really interesting. The Rockets and the Hawks I
think got better. I like what Denver did. They got
(02:09):
rid of Porter and you bring in Cam Johnson, who, yes,
is two years older, but makes about seventeen million less.
That means Denver's probably got another move in there. And
we keep looking around going okay, are the Knicks going
to get a coach? When do they get a coach?
And are the Lakers going to get.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
A big men.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
That seems to be some unanswered questions. I don't think
Giannis is going to be moved. He's probably trying to
figure out, Okay, what is their grand plan? If you
want to keep me, what are you going to do?
What can you do? And you don't have Dame Lillard,
I just don't know if you have enough. Even though
(02:49):
the east is wide open. The Lebron James whatever, Rich
Paul is agent the word salad there of let's think
about now, not necessarily the few sure, but he's going
to op back in, but doesn't feel like he's happy.
Just see what Bobby Marks is gonna How does he
interpret what was said there or not said by Lebron
(03:12):
James's camp. Stat of the Day is always brought to
you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program.
We mentioned this yesterday, I mentioned it again next Thursday.
Celebrity Jeopardy, Celebrity Family Feude, Celebrity family Feude. Well, we
wouldn't do well in Celebrity Jeopardy.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Now we wouldn't do.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Well Celebrity family Feud. Though I can't tell you how
well or how poorly we did. I will say it's
all about content. Yes, see multiple choice, we got a
better chance there. Yes, we definitely better chance at multiple choice. Yeah.
The whole thing with Jeopardy and you got to buzz
in and it's it's you know, timing and and plus
you have to be smart too, you know. Oh yeah, quick,
(03:58):
got I mean, is apparently the smartest person in the room.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
What is paramesium?
Speaker 4 (04:03):
What?
Speaker 5 (04:05):
What is the larval stage?
Speaker 4 (04:06):
Oh so sorryoopoo?
Speaker 6 (04:09):
What is covalent bonding fines?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, you have the highest grade point average here and
you graduated second and here.
Speaker 6 (04:16):
And once again shows it how street spots versus a
memorizing things in a book way that gets you.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yes, I would love a piece of fellow sports media
people in Jeopardy. I don't know if I have the
celebrity part of it, but I don't know if I
can get on because of that reason. But Jeopardy is
the timing of it is almost more important than your knowledge.
You hosted it, you know, it's mostly timing, mostly time.
I mean you didn't need the answers as well. Yeah,
(04:45):
but I had read that in the original Jeopardy they
want the people to get the answers. They don't want
people missing over and over poo.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Sports Jeopardy was great, but I probably knew seventy five,
maybe eighty percent of the clues. There were some people
that were really really shark you know, so when you
buzz in, you're good to go. Think you got to
have that answer. And it was challenging. It was fun.
I really enjoyed that. I love doing that. All Righty,
(05:16):
I didn't know this, but Nico Harrison, the MAVs GM
now is letting people know. You get to see the
vision that he saw with the Dallas Mavericks. So it
starts with the question and then here's Nico Harrison, the
MAVs general manager.
Speaker 7 (05:33):
Your relationship with the fans after everything this past season.
Speaker 8 (05:37):
Yeah, I think so. I think I think it will help.
Most importantly, I think it just you know, we're in
win now modes. We have a really good team, and
Cooper adds to that. So I think the fans finally
start to see the vision.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Okay, the plan wasn't to win the lottery. If they
win a play in game, they're not in the lottery.
If I'm Nico Harrison, you can take a victory lamp,
but do it in a way that doesn't make it
seem like you deserve all the credit because you guys
(06:13):
didn't make the playoffs, you had injuries, you traded away Luca,
and you lucked into Cooper Flag. That's not exactly a
vision here, because if you win one more game, you're
not even in the lottery. What is your vision after that?
(06:35):
Can he just say, We've been very fortunate, you know,
tough to trade Luca. I like what we got in return.
I truly believe in that type of team winning championships
playing defense, and we get Cooper Flag.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
We lucked into that.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
You know, we're very fortunate, and you know what, We're
not going to have Kyrie for the first half of
the season, but we get D'Angelo Russell. He'll be, you know,
a capable filling for him, and I think the second
half of the season. People then can see the vision
of what I think is going to win championships here
like something like that.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Yeah, Suton, it would.
Speaker 9 (07:11):
Be worse though if he was like, whoo, got lucky
with that one. I'd rather be lucky than good any day, right, But.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
That's the truth of it, Like he did luck out,
there's no vision to get Cooper Flag for d Chess.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
He's playing for d Chess. You just can't see it
come in the way.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
He can't.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
You're right, I did not see this.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
I did not get the vision, and my eyesight's a
little spotty, yes, PAULI.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
So for Nico Harrison, he basically has to hold his
breath the next five six years that the Lakers led
by Luca don't win a title. Yeah, until that happens,
he still got a benefit of doubt on his side
a little bit.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
But only if the Lakers win a title.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
It's over for him. If the Lakers win a title, and.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Because what if Luca is the MVP next season and.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
They don't win anything, Yeah, he's still in the clear
because if this was about Luca, right, but it's Sophy's.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Just going to prove I'm the best player in this sport.
I'm gonna win the MVP. That refutes what Nico Harrison
thought about him, that he was out of shape.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
And he comes in jacked.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Well, he's just he's gonna lose weight. You're not gonna
be jacked. He's just gonna be in shape, I think.
But I would think now, granted you win a title,
that's one thing, But if you win the MVP, he
bet against Luca. Now he's also going to say, well,
you know what, we want somebody who's going to play defense. Okay,
there are a lot of great players in the history
of the NBA who they played defense by outscoring you
(08:47):
on offense. Like I got my thirty five and you
got eighteen.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
I think I won.
Speaker 9 (08:52):
Yeah, it is possible that five years from now down
the line, Yeah, this trade doesn't look bad. How if
Luca doesn't do the things you were just talking.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
About, So, if he doesn't take care of himself, if
Luca remains Luca that we saw the last couple of
years in Dallas, correct, Okay, because now it's going to
be his team probably after next season.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
Lebron gone, it's a big stage to not be the guy. Yeah,
people are expecting.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Far more members of the media covering everything you do
in Los Angeles. We're in Dallas, probably a little more
user friendly. But Nico should not. I mean, it's embarrassing
for him to talk about a vision.
Speaker 10 (09:35):
Here.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
If I took away Cooper flag and they had the
thirteenth pick in the first round, would he be telling
me about a vision?
Speaker 4 (09:46):
And the answer is no, he would not. The vision.
It's essentially a new trust the process.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
It's like if the Niners don't get brock Purdy after
you know, screwing it up with Trey Lan.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Yeah, that's where you can go. Yeah, you see the
vision we got here.
Speaker 9 (10:05):
See it's trust the process. The new is see the
vision they got. They got bailed out.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
John Lynch got bailed out big time there, Like that
guy is our future. We're going all in. We're going
up to get Trey Lance. But you see the vision
we had. We took this guy with the last pick
of the drat and league. Come on, there's no vision there.
That's where Niko Okay, I'm I'm glad that he feels
safe now that fans aren't maybe as angry as they
(10:33):
were because they have Cooper Flag.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
I understand that, But don't take a victory lap on
the vision here. I'm sorry.
Speaker 5 (10:40):
Yes, it's also hard not to.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
You're excited that you got bailed out with Cooper Flag
and you don't want to rub it in. But the
one thing you can never do Nico Harrison is ever
admit that he got it wrong. He has to hold
with this stance in every interview. Does with the trade
of Luca.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
We're Also, it's been a busy show, been all over
the place. You've come to expect that. I brought up
the hurry. We were talking about TJ. Watt and Trey
Hendrickson and Sachs, and I want a guy who's gonna
lead the league in hurries. Well, there's not really a
definition on a hurry, and they don't keep official stats.
I had Todd reach out to the NFL. They get
(11:20):
back to you on the hurry. Not just all right,
So how's this? A hurry is when a defensive player
causes the quarterback to pull the ball down, scramble, or
throw the ball early.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Just one sentence there.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
We don't want to add anything to it, complete the
process or any of that stuff. I don't know if
that's good enough. I think this is just in the
eye of the beholder at each stadium. But I love,
you know, guys who create hurries. I'm all in on that.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Let me see.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
So we we did some digging on hurries here. Twenty
twenty one, Joey Bosa let's see, had twenty one hurries,
Von Miller sixteen hurries. In twenty twenty two, Aiden Hutchinson
at twenty nine, Michael Parsons with twenty one. Max Crosby
(12:22):
total hurries since twenty twenty one he has sixty one.
Michael Parsons has sixty one. So these are legitimate stats
because these are really good players, Max Crosby, Michael Parsons,
Chris Jones, Aiden Hutchinson and Trey Hendrickson. How about hits
quarterback hits, Let's see twenty twenty one, TJ. Watt had
(12:48):
thirty nine. Following year, Nick bos had forty eight, TJ
Watt had thirty six, Zach Allen had forty and twenty
twenty four total quarterback hit since twenty twenty one. Nick
Bosa is your big leader, then Max Crosby, Miles Garrett,
TJ Wantt, Michael Parsons, and Trey Henderson.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
Yes, Todd, And how do you define a hit?
Speaker 6 (13:10):
What if you kind of grazed the quarterback and he
went down and it kind of looks like a hit,
but he just kind of rubbed up against it.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Now, you're right, you know with the NFL they're going
to add language. Here a couple of phone calls in here,
if I may Joe and Orlando, Hi Joe, what's on
your mind today?
Speaker 11 (13:28):
Morning?
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Shosdan just give We got a bad connection there. Joe
Dylan in Orlando, Hi Dyll, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 10 (13:39):
Hey Dan, I think of the nick of my call again.
I had a stat considering the MLB All Star Game
coming up the side of the day. I want to
get them to play more quackless him there and has
most MLB All Star Game appearances. But which two players
are tied for second?
Speaker 4 (13:54):
All right?
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Which two players are tied for second on the all
time All Star Game appearance? Willie mays.
Speaker 10 (14:03):
That one of them looks the other one?
Speaker 5 (14:07):
Um hm, yes, Paul, I was gonna throw a Tony Gwynn.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
No al kayline, Oh no, Marvin stay u usual.
Speaker 10 (14:27):
Group group group. Well done, guys, Jesus bless you think
you were taking my call?
Speaker 12 (14:30):
All right?
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Thank you? Dylan Matt in California, Hi Matt, what's on
your mind today?
Speaker 7 (14:37):
Good morning?
Speaker 12 (14:38):
Six?
Speaker 7 (14:39):
These are the top five suggestions for the sports semi
and you could really make my day if you're going
at the end of this.
Speaker 10 (14:46):
But here we go.
Speaker 7 (14:47):
Number five, use the quality paper to create a beautiful
OREGONI crane. Number four posted as a pdf on LinkedIn.
Number three, hang it with a single thumbtack when the
coroner starts to curl tape them down with yellow scotch tape.
Number two, pay with a check on Friday, stop payment Monday.
And number one you're better than this, don't get one.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
Thank you, Matt. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
The Sports Emmy people reach out to the losers of
the Sports Emmys and said, if you would like to
have a certificate or we'd like to say the non winners,
a certificate of being a non winner of the Sports Emmys,
and for fifty dollars, unframed, you could get a certificate.
And I said I would buy any of the dan
nets a certificate of being a Sports Emmy nominee but
(15:33):
not winning.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
PAULI took me up on it. Nobody else did.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
I don't want one, but I would like at the
end of this, in you know, two and a half years,
if all the Sports Emmy nominations we had, if they
I could get a certificate of that of all the
years that we were nominated. Yeah, and they did a
one certificate, like a one sheet certificate.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
I would be fine with that. Yes, Don plus shipping
and handling?
Speaker 12 (15:59):
What for.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Eric in Wisconsin?
Speaker 12 (16:07):
Hi?
Speaker 4 (16:07):
Eric, what's on your mind?
Speaker 11 (16:11):
Hello?
Speaker 13 (16:11):
Mister Patrick Dan, that's loved the show. Going back to
one of your previous conversations here, how did you quit
your fandom for your love of, you know, your local
Ohio sports teams, Reds, et cetera.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
I just had to turn off a portion of my brain.
I just it was I just didn't care anymore. I
had to just say I don't care. And it was
really tough because you grow up and you're watching games,
you're listening to games, going to games, and I just
got to this point where I went, I can't care
(16:46):
about Kenny Anderson or Boomer Siasin, or Chris Collinsworth, Anthony
Munos or Eric Davis of the Red. I just I
couldn't care about it anymore. And it it's difficult. Even
when I go back to Ohio, people will say, what
do you have against the reds Now, I go nothing.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
I'm a national sportscaster. I can't root.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
And I didn't like it when you know Chris Berman
would root or Stuart Scott would root.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
Our job was to be neutral.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
You had to tune in and think we are being
careful with what we're saying and how we're saying it.
I never agreed with that. They had their fandom, they
wore it on their sleeves, and I couldn't do it
that way. Difficult, But you know, that's been what thirty
six years, thirty seven years that I've kind of been
(17:39):
able to. Even when the Bengals were in the Super
Bowl and they're like, aren't you pulling for the Bengals,
I said, I'm polling for the people of Cincinnati. Couldn't
care less if they won, great for the people of Cincinnati.
But the Rams were a great story as well. So
if that explains it. Let's see, we'll take a break
(17:59):
here seating. Do we have a poll question for the
final hour of the program. We got two of them
up there.
Speaker 9 (18:05):
Worst Day Yesterday okay, Lakers Yannis or the Nets. Okay,
Lakers have sixty one percent of that vote. And then
we also have the best Day yesterday. The Rockets went
in that one, followed by the Steelers. The Hawks only
about twenty percent.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
Okay eight seven seven to three.
Speaker 2 (18:24):

Speaker 4 (18:27):
Twitter handled the TP show.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
The free agent center Miles Turner is on the move.
He's joining the Milwaukee Bucks. Four years, one hundred and
seven million, dollars he was with the Pacers. Alright, is
(18:51):
there more to that, Paul?
Speaker 3 (18:52):
Yeah, This just in a minute ago from Shams Sharani
of ESPN. The Milwaukee Bucks are waving Damian Lillard and
stretching the remaining one thirteen of his contract in order
to acquire Miles Turner.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Wow. All right, well, good time to talk to the
NBA front office insigner Bobby Marks will join.
Speaker 4 (19:12):

Speaker 2 (19:55):
You're just joining us. The breaking news Miles Turner leaving
the Pacers a four year, one hundred and seven million
dollar deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to ESPN, and
the Milwaukee Bucks are going to wave Dame Lillard? Is
that the official wording on that, Marvin that they're going
to wave Dame Lillard?
Speaker 9 (20:15):
Correct?
Speaker 4 (20:16):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Bobby Marks, ESPN, NBA Front Office Insider, regular contributor to
NBA Today, NBA Free Agency tipped off last night on
the Mothership. This evening a three hour NBA Today Free
Agency special that'll start at seven eastern. All right, Bobby,
let me start with that surprise that Miles Turner's going
to the Bucks, and then what they did with Dame Lillard.
Speaker 12 (20:40):
Yeah, I was surprised.
Speaker 14 (20:41):
I thought, listen, Indiana gets to an NBA finals and
certainly Turner is a priority. I think things change a
little bit with the Halburn injury as far as where
Indiana is going next year with their roster. I think
the interesting thing Dan, they've they haven't paid the luxury
tax in twenty years. They had signed Turner, this would
(21:02):
have put them into tacks for the first time, and
they basically let him walk to a division rival that's
trying to keep their franchise.
Speaker 12 (21:11):
Level player on their roster. So yeah, it is.
Speaker 14 (21:14):
It is surprising the Lillard one. I think the Lillard
one is probably more surprising for me. I know, he's
out with that injury and he's owed one hundred and
thirteen million dollars and they stretched that money over five years.
It's the biggest stretch ever, twenty two point nine million
that he's going to be owed. And I think when
Damien does get.
Speaker 12 (21:33):
Returned from that injury, he'll have a high demand.
Speaker 14 (21:36):
Whenever that is, you know, it might be a year
from now here, but it will be interesting how this
Bucks roster with they lose Brook Lopez, but they get
Miles Turner to join Jannis.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
More likely or less likely that Yannis will be on
the move anytime soon.
Speaker 12 (21:51):
I thought it was.
Speaker 14 (21:51):
I think it's less likely that he'll be on the move.
And I said that this morning when we were doing TV,
just based on some of the moves they had made
with Bobby Porters and they bring back Gary Trent Junior
and Kevin Porter some of their role players. They still
got to go get a point guard, though, I mean,
I think that's gonna be the most important thing. I
think I think the one name to keep an eye
(22:12):
on is Chris Paul.
Speaker 12 (22:13):
I would keep an eye on Chris Paul.
Speaker 14 (22:15):
I don't know if it fits what Chris is trying
to do at this tale of his career, certainly being
in Milwaukee, not close to home, I know that is
a priority for him. But he's the best available free
agent point guard in the market. He played eighty two
games last year and he still got a lot left.
So I would think that would If I'm Milwaukee, that's
the priority for me as far as going out and
(22:36):
trying to get a player like that.
Speaker 4 (22:38):
But what about the Pacers in lieu of Tyrese Halliburton?
What do you do?
Speaker 2 (22:42):
We saw what Dallas did with Kyrie out and you
get D'Angelo Russell's what's Indiana's mindset here?
Speaker 14 (22:48):
Well, the market of free agent centers, and this is
kind of the timing of it is not good for
Indiana because we had a rash of centers come off.
Speaker 12 (22:55):
The board yesterday. You had Brook Lopez, you had you
have Clint Capella.
Speaker 14 (23:01):
There was a number of players here really that they
have this that we call it the non tax fourteen
million dollars to go out and spend. DeAndre Ayton is
the best available out there. I would think the market
for DeAndre Ayton gets a little bit better.
Speaker 12 (23:15):
It had cooled off a little bit.
Speaker 14 (23:16):
We thought maybe the Lakers were linked to him, and
we'll see if that plays out. But I think if
Aighton wants to go to Indiana, that would probably be the.
Speaker 12 (23:22):
Better fit for him.
Speaker 14 (23:23):
But it is a tough blow for Indiana because now
you lose two out of your five starters for next year.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
But are you bringing in somebody as a temporary replacement
for Halibard.
Speaker 12 (23:36):
Well, they've got TJ.
Speaker 14 (23:37):
McConnell, and they have Andrew Nemhard, and they drafted. They
they went through the draft and picked up picked up
a guard there.
Speaker 12 (23:44):
So I know.
Speaker 14 (23:46):
I think the interesting thing Dan is the move they
made before the draft when Haliburton right in the NBA Finals,
when they were getting able to get their first round
pick back, they traded their their own pick this year
to New Orleans and got their pickback in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 12 (24:02):
So now that gives them.
Speaker 14 (24:03):
The flexibility like they're almost kind of where like Boston
is where you're almost I don't want to say gap year,
but you're, you know, you're kind of you can kind
of pull back a little bit here and reset that
roster and still get a pretty good draft pick.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
Would you move Jalen Brown if you're the Celtics.
Speaker 14 (24:19):
I wouldn't because I keep on coming back to this
notion that eventually Jason Tatum's coming back. I mean, like,
and you're going to have if the goal is to
try to win, you need Jalen Brown and Derek White
around him. And it's so hard getting a player like
Brown who's a top twenty player, and you know, White
does it, you know, do everything type guy to add
(24:41):
to your roster and trades and free agency. I wouldn't
unless it's you know, the mothership of packages and everything
like that. I wouldn't move off off Jalen.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Brown, Bobby Marks, ESPN, NBA Front Office Insider, and NBA
Today Free Agency Special. It's three hours starting at seven
eastern tonight. Can you help me understand or translate what
Rich Paul was saying to us? And I guess the
Lakers about Lebron almost begrudgingly opting in, but hey, remember
(25:12):
it's about winning now, not the future.
Speaker 14 (25:15):
Well, when I saw that, Dan, I had to send
it to my wife that I had said, can you
interpret this for me? Because I don't understand anything on here.
It's interesting. It's like, well, we're going to opt into
fifty three million dollars, but we want the roster to
be better and I want to when it has to
be a championship roster. Well, if you wanted to do that,
why didn't you just decline your option?
Speaker 12 (25:34):
You had to pick a.
Speaker 14 (25:35):
Team's I mean that would have been essentially the easiest
thing to do here. Now he's opted in there, Listen, there,
there's an incomplete for the Lakers as far as their
off season so far. I mean, they went out and
got Jake Lauravia, but they've got We've been talking since
February about getting a center. I mean, they need to
get a center, and there's no market for them outside
(25:56):
of Eton right now. And it's going to be interesting
the collateral damage or the impact if they don't make
significant improvements here. Because you've got Luca on one end,
who's your future, and then you have Lebron here on
the last year of a contract. Here, you're basically kind
of working on two different timelines.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
Yeah, I'm trying to understand.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
And they lose Dorian Finney Smith to the Rockets, and
I start to wonder, Okay, they're going to bring back
Austin Reeves. You think he turned down uh that extension,
but they're going to bring him back. I'm guessing. But
I just wonder what exactly is Lebron saying? And I
agree with you. I said the same thing. If you
(26:38):
don't like what it looks like in LA, then go
to Cleveland and win another title there. If that, if
you're not happy with this, you're not part of the future,
then you can win a championship in Cleveland with the
East wide open.
Speaker 14 (26:53):
Yeah, I mean, I think it would have worked maybe
five years ago. I mean, but now, as I said,
like where the Lakers are when you went out and
get you acquire Luca like he's the face of the franchise,
Like he's the face of the franchise.
Speaker 12 (27:05):
They're not going to go out and.
Speaker 14 (27:07):
Make a short term move to satisfy Lebron.
Speaker 12 (27:12):
Like they're not going out and giving.
Speaker 14 (27:13):
Up all their draft equity for a short, short term
move for a player that likely won't be on their
roster now.
Speaker 4 (27:20):
But aren't the Lakers trying to win now?
Speaker 14 (27:22):
Bobby, Well, that's what they're trying to kind of thread
the needle, like you're trying to thread the needle of
winning now saving your flexibility for next year.
Speaker 12 (27:31):
That is it's.
Speaker 14 (27:32):
Hard to do in the Western Conference, trying to do that.
The Western Conference we went through yesterday. Dallas got better
because they got D'Angel Russell as a temporary replacement for Kyrie.
Of course, Cooper fly, you go through the list, Denver,
cam Johnson, Houston, of course as far as where they're Okay,
Ce brings back everything like if you tell me right now,
(27:54):
is the Lakers a top five or six team in
the in the what?
Speaker 12 (27:57):
I don't think they are? And we had this debate
to morning.
Speaker 14 (28:01):
I would say the Dallas and Nico Harrison got criticized.
He got crucified, right, and that's rightfully so based on
the trade and what happened. But you could make the
argument that Dallas is in a better position right now
than the Los Angeles Lakers as.
Speaker 12 (28:14):
Far as where they are.
Speaker 14 (28:16):
And I know they got lucky with Cooper flag, but
with Cooper flag, and if they get Kyrie back in
the debt, they have with that roster. If they of course,
if they stay healthy, that they're in a better position.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
I don't want to hear Nico Harrison tell me about
the vision that he had, because the vision was, Hey,
I traded away Luca. People hated me, we had injuries.
If we win one more game, we're not even in
the lottery. There's no vision here. He lucked into Cooper Flag.
That's all we needed to say. Hey, I still believe
(28:48):
in defense. When we're healthy, we're going to be very competitive.
We lucked into the lottery and I got Cooper Flag.
Speaker 4 (28:55):
That's it. But don't tell me, Hey, you see the
vision that I had, What exactly is that?
Speaker 12 (29:00):
You know?
Speaker 14 (29:01):
It would have been refreshing if he just went up
there and goes, man, we got lucky, I mean like
humanize it, like humanize it, right.
Speaker 12 (29:08):
We would all be like, yeah, you know what, you did,
get lucky.
Speaker 4 (29:11):
What do you expect out of Cooper Flag? First year?
Speaker 12 (29:14):
Oh?
Speaker 14 (29:14):
Man, I tell you I've probably told this story too
many times, but I mean I living out in Southwest Florida,
and I saw Cooper play when he was at Mount
Verd at the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers.
This is when Cooper was sixteen, This was his senior
year in high school. And this is with Derrick Queen
and Lea McNeely and Ason Newell that team. And I
was sitting with a scout and I said that a scout,
(29:36):
I'm not making this up. I go, he could play
in the NBA right now sixteen.
Speaker 12 (29:41):
The beauty of.
Speaker 14 (29:42):
Cooper flag is not him scoring twenty two twenty three
points a game.
Speaker 12 (29:49):
The beauty of Cooper Flag is defense.
Speaker 14 (29:52):
I mean his defense, as far as his length, his IQ.
That's what's going to keep him in these games down
the stretch here. And I think he's he's all business.
I had an opportunity to sit down with them a
high level. But I love I love the fact that
he can come in right now and make an impact defensively.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
But I also wonder how do you ease him in
to a lineup? That's do you start him?
Speaker 12 (30:18):
You start him, then you have PJ.
Speaker 14 (30:19):
Washington come off. That's the That's the thing with Dallas.
They got so much depth they have, you know, whether
it be PJ. Washington or Nigie Marshall or Caleb Martin.
I mean, you go, Kyrie, Clay Cooper, ad Derek Lively.
Speaker 12 (30:32):
Daniel Gafford.
Speaker 14 (30:33):
I mean that's kind of what you're you're looking at here.
But I do think you, I do think I mean,
Jason is talking with a kid. Is all about playing
my point a little bit here too, which is going
to be interesting here. But I do think you kind
of it's like baptism by fire.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
Yeah, I don't know, maybe i'd have him come in
off the bench.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
He's playing against their second unit, but then you do
kind of want him surrounded a little bit there. I mean,
he's he's really got the luxury of he can defer,
and nobody's going to complain if he defers, Whether if
he went to the Wizards or went to Brooklyn, I mean,
all eyes would be on him, like, all right, let
(31:09):
me see what you can do with Dallas. He can
attempt to blend in a little bit there.
Speaker 14 (31:15):
Yeah, it's almost like a quarterback getting drafted with the
first pick and like basically throwing him into like on
an expansion team like we saw of I think Derek
Carr right with the Texans and you know where Cooper,
He's not going to Utah or Washington or Brooklyn one
of these teams at rebuilding you basically have all these
veterans around him that you can he's in more into
(31:36):
the situation.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
Any big moves you're expecting.
Speaker 14 (31:42):
You know, we have all these restricted free agents out there.
Jonathan KAMINGA Josh Giddy, there's a group and the problem
is there's no money out there in free agency for
a team to come in and give an offer sheet.
Speaker 15 (31:53):
Here.
Speaker 14 (31:54):
You know, we'll we'll see what happens on the on
the trade front free agency. You know, we had a
lot come off the.
Speaker 12 (31:59):
Board on Monday. Here, we might be done by the
end of the week.
Speaker 14 (32:03):
Free agency wise, it's it's the downside of the ability
to negotiate with your own players at once the finals ends.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
If you were going to let's say one of your children,
you're going to show and tell bringing in my daddy's
going to explain the NBA aprons. So it's career day,
but you were going to explain it to let's.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Say fifth graders.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
Yeah, treat me like a fifth grader and my audience
and explain the famous NBA aprons.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
That second apron here, Yeah, I.
Speaker 12 (32:35):
Know, I wish we would come up with a different name. Right.
Speaker 14 (32:38):
It's a it's a punitive restriction that once you exceed it, Okay,
once you exceed this level, you're all right, let's let's
all right.
Speaker 12 (32:47):
I'm gonna talk like like a fifth grader.
Speaker 14 (32:49):
You have a you have a toy box of toys. Okay,
you have twenty twenty of your best toys. Okay, once
you exceed this restriction this level, I'm going to go
in the toy box, Dan, and I'm gonna take fifteen
out of those toys away. But I'm still gonna give
you five of your best toys okay, but I'm taking
(33:10):
those other fifteen away.
Speaker 12 (33:12):
Here.
Speaker 14 (33:12):
Now you have less toys to play with, but they're
still pretty good. But you won't be able to add
any more toys to that here. And that's what the
league is saying. We're going to allow you to keep
your best but we're not going to allow you to
go to Golden State or to Clippers and grab their
best player. And what it does is it makes you
(33:33):
draft well, it makes you prioritize keeping your own players.
If you don't like Phoenix, who's been a second Apron
team and had three high level players and they don't
have they have three shiny toys, but not really anything
else good.
Speaker 12 (33:51):
To that roster.
Speaker 14 (33:52):
It really hurts you, like Oklahoma City's is going to be.
If they're a team that can defeat the second apron
as we call it. They're the ones that can do it.
Because if Shay che Jalen Williams four first round picks
next year, all these young players, when player, when Lou
Dort gets expensive, Kason Wallace, Mike will probably replace him
on Isaiah Hartenstein replaces him. Thomas Sorber, who they drafted,
(34:16):
replaces him. So you can keep on turning the wheel.
Speaker 4 (34:18):
There, no thank you. Thank you for treating us as.
Speaker 12 (34:23):
I've never used that. I've never used that in now
I just made that one up.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Maybe you could do it with to Greenee, you know,
because I Greenee doesn't understand the second aprin so maybe
you just treat him like a fifth grader.
Speaker 4 (34:35):
Have fun tonight, Bobby, thank you for joining us.
Speaker 12 (34:37):
Thanks to that. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Bobby Marks, ESPN NBA Front office insider. You know sometimes
you have to say, you know, just don't give me
the legal ease, you know, whenever we have a lawyer on,
like dumb it down a little bit for me here,
Front office insider and second eight. They deal with this
all the time, common language, and then we go yeah, okay, yeah.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
They Hey, you could be.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
Talking about you know, the first spatula and the second
apron and uh, you know, a griddle, and I'd be like, yeah, okay,
firstla Yeah. NBA Today Free Agency Special three hours starting
tonight at seven Eastern on the Mothership. We'll take a break,
last call for phone calls, What we learned, What's in
store tomorrow?
Speaker 1 (35:21):
After this, be sure to catch the live edition of
The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six
am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio WAP.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Last call for phone calls, What we learn, What's in
store tomorrow. If I'm a Pacer fan, I'm proud that
we went to the NBA Finals. We took the champions
to seven games, but we lost Tyrese Haliburton. If you
win the title and you lose Tyre's Halliburton and now
you lose Miles Turner, you go, Okay, at least we
(35:54):
won a title, but this is tough. No Haliburton for
most of the season, and now you lose Miles Turner
to a rival in the Milwaukee Bucks.
Speaker 4 (36:05):
That's a bad off.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
Season. It's a bad off season. We just started July.
I like what Milwaukee did. They upgraded Brook Lopez goes
to the Clippers. You get Miles Turner, four year deal.
You're going to wave Dame Lillard. You might have the
tallest point guard in the history of the NBA, Yannis,
he might play point. I don't know who else you
(36:31):
got who's going to start as your point guard there,
but it might be honest. But if you had won
the title, then at least you go, Okay, we'll accept
that we got our title. But now you lose Haliburton,
and now you lose Miles Turner. Chris in La, Hi, Chris,
what's on your mind today?
Speaker 4 (36:52):
How you doing?
Speaker 15 (36:52):
Dan?
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Good Sir?
Speaker 15 (36:55):
I've had the pleasure in the last two summers or
springs of working with Cooper Flag out here Los Angeles.
I do NBA pre drafts out here and by far,
and I've been doing it for ten years, by far,
the hardest working kid player, whatever you want to call him,
I've ever seen. His work ethic is off the charts,
and I mean we had guys that were fighting to
(37:17):
get into the first round, second rounders, and he was
working harder than all of them. His work ethic is
off the charts, and I think I think he's going
to be a fantastic pro.
Speaker 4 (37:27):
What was it that stood out that he needs to work.
Speaker 15 (37:31):
On really not much, probably three point shooting maybe at
the least. His basketball IQ is through the roof. And
what people don't realize, he is a fantastic passer. So
when Jason Kidd said he could play point, he absolutely
could play point. He sees things before they even developed.
(37:51):
It's just a weird sense that he has on the
court of a player that I've never seen anything like
it before. I think the only player that I ever
saw like that was Steve Nash Cooper. Flag is his
court vision and his IQ is really off the chart.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Thank you, Chris. Yeah, by all accounts, he's ready to go.
And here's Bobby Mark saying I saw him at sixteen
and thought he could play in the NBA. Size wise,
he's going to fill out. I like the fact that
he it's not that he will play defense. He likes
playing defense, and I think he's a very underrated passer.
(38:26):
I think the shot could be wilt well. I mean,
once again, he's eighteen. Things will get better. I just
hope that he keeps adding to his repertoire. The great
ones keep adding because as the league adjusts to you,
then you have to adjust and do something different. Very
very few guys can go, I'm going to go there
and you can't stop me. I'm going to make that
(38:48):
move and you can't stop me. That's not Cooper Flag,
but that you know, when somebody says, oh, he doesn't
have the bag, he does. He's got everything in it.
It's not one thing. I don't want a player who
has one thing. I you know, forget who it was.
Carmelo said, he doesn't do one thing. Great, look at
all the things he does. Really well, that's the player
(39:11):
I want. That's what I want. Uh Kellen in Kansas City, Hi, Kellen,
What's on your mind?
Speaker 4 (39:19):
Six one, two forty.
Speaker 14 (39:24):
With you?
Speaker 13 (39:24):
Spoke earlier about being on like Sports Jeopardy. Besides the
show and besides Sports Center, What has been the best
side gig that you've had.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
I would say with NBC Football Night in America and
doing the Olympics, those were, if you want to call
him a side gig, I mean they Football Night in
America was a full time job. It was during the
football season. Obviously, but I really enjoyed that. It was
a high end product, worked with great people. The Olympics
once again, high end product, big exposure, new challenge for me.
(39:57):
But Sports Jeopardy, if I could do that, do that
on a consistent basis, that would be a great retirement
plan because I could do that and have a lot
of fun, be satisfied with that. No, there's no breaking news.
No there's no I'm not oh no, no, no, no.
(40:18):
I keep trying to have them bring back Sports Jeopardy.
It just makes all the sense in the world. How
about Mothership? You know, at five o'clock every day since
you kicked around the horn of the curb, all do
Sports Jeopardy leading into Mike and Tony. I'll do that
for you. That's breaking news, Yes, Marvin damn Patrick going
(40:40):
back to the Mothership. Yes, all right, Well it'd be
like McAfee where they take your show and then they
put it at the mother Ship.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
And then they can name a building after you.
Speaker 9 (40:49):
Yes, no, then I get a statue. Then you get
a statue on top of the building.
Speaker 2 (40:54):
That's what I want, a big statue on top of
the building. Todd, would you learn to.
Speaker 4 (41:00):
Odds to win the NBA title next season.
Speaker 6 (41:01):
Thunder plus two twenty five, way ahead of the next team,
Rockets at seven fifty seeden.
Speaker 4 (41:06):
Would you learn today You're not a big statue guy.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
No, not really. I've posed a lot before. Marvin Bobby
Mark's treated is like fifth graders. Yeah, I mean it
is Rodan, that's the famous statue. Yes, Paulie, what'd you learn?
Speaker 5 (41:19):
SGA seventy million plus.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
Yeah, I have a great day, everybody. We look forward
to chatting with you tomorrow.
