Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Final Hour in this Tuesday. Been busy so far,
first two hours. Mike Golig Senior, they like to call
him Big Mike. He will join us coming up in
a little bit eight seven to seven three. DP Show
email address DP at Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle the
DP Show.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Good morning.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
If you're watching on Peacock, that's our streaming partner, the
NBC Sports Network as well. Next Saturday and Sunday on NBC.
In Peacock, twenty of golf's greatest champions hit the links
and they will be there with the ones who matter most,
their families, the PNC. That'll be next Saturday Sunday on
NBC and Peacock. I mentioned at the end of last Hour.
(00:42):
Arch Manning is coming back to Texas. There's no surprise there,
and he needed to come back. I think for one
more year. Steve Sarkisian is going to stay one more year,
and I don't know if he's now. There's all of
these chat rooms that talk about who's on the hot seat,
like Dabo Sweeney sort of on double probation here from
(01:03):
the standpoint of you better produce here or we'll move on.
And once again, I always say the same thing. You
got to come up with somebody better. And what happened
at Penn State should be a bright light, a beacon
that says, wait, hold on here, who are we going
to get that's going to be better?
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Yes, Marvin Clemson is saying that. Who does Clemson think
they are Clemson? They said that like they were Ohio
State or Alabama.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Well for a while they were, but that was a
few years ago. Yes, Paul, do you almost.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
Reward Clemson for being patient because dad has had two
down seasons out of fifteen.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah, but they've been the last two.
Speaker 6 (01:44):
Two of the.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
Last three have been down. Yeah, And I don't know,
maybe I respect them for being patient.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well, who were you getting? Who's better? Yeah? That really
that's what it comes down to. And I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
If you have somebody where you go, boy, that's the
next guy that you're going to get. Because Lane Kiffin's
already at LSU, it always feels like, man Alabama opens up,
that would have been great for Lane Kiffin if Alabama
opened up. I wonder if Dabo Sweeny would say, you
know what, maybe you don't care about me I'll go
to Alabama because I know what that landscape is all about.
(02:19):
But you know, you see that arch Manning is coming back,
and I think that's really good. Leonora's sellers at South
Carolina's coming back. I think that that makes a lot
of sense.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
Now.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
It's easy for me to say when I'm watching these kids,
because it always feels like you could use a little
more seasoning there. And scouts want to have more than
thirty starts. Ideally, they'd like to have more than thirty
five starts. That's their sweet spot of Okay, maybe around thirty,
but I'd like to have a little bit more than that.
(02:51):
And now you're seeing these quarterbacks transferring. You know, you
got Aidan Chiles leaving Michigan State, Sam Levitt moving on
from Arizona State, DJ Lagway he's leaving Florida, Dylan Ryola,
he's saying goodbye to Nebraska. And we've seen what's happened
with these last four Heisman winners. They're all transfers, So
(03:14):
you might go a couple of years. Fernando Mendoza took
Cow to two Bowl games, I believe, and then he
transferred to Indiana. He was already a good quarterback, and
you could have one of these quarterbacks who's transferred who
might end up winning a Heisman Trophy, because that seems
to be almost the blueprint now of I'm going to
(03:34):
play someplace and then I'm going to go someplace. And
Jaden Daniels did this at LSU, and you're going to
get a big pay raise.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
So you prove.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yourself, we're going to give you a big pay raise.
Now you've got a chance to play for nice shiny trophies.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
Yampauli arts Manning, though, is such an anomaly because in
this down year for a quarterback draft, based off his reputation,
he would be a top ten pick easily. And he
doesn't need the money, like he's one of the few
quarterbacks in college football history that the nil wouldn't keep
up with the family money.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
But he needs to play.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
Yes, he's only got he's got less than fifteen.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's got to and even then he's
going to give you close to thirty starts when it's
all said and done. He didn't play against great high
school competition, but he does have the athleticism, he does
have that name, and you're on a big stage and
look you start out the season against Ohio State, and
that's a defense that's probably going to have maybe five
(04:34):
starters in the first round, four or five starters. And
he didn't play well. He looked overwhelmed. But we saw
him at the end of the year. That's why I'm
looking forward to seeing him play in the bowl game.
I just the more he plays, the more it becomes
a parent that there are a lot of great traits there.
(04:55):
But still I would not be taking him early if
I had a if I had a top ten draft pick,
I would not be taking him until I saw a
little bit more. And look, maybe you pass up a
generational talent, but I gotta see more. I think that's
the problem teams. You get into this and you go,
uh yeah, Zach Wilson, Yeah, let's take him. How many
(05:17):
starts I don't know, fourteen, that's where it's dangerous, you know,
Trey Lance, I don't know. I look really good that
one year. I need to see a little bit more, yeah, Paulin.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
And then a guy like Bo Nicks sixty one starts
in college and not just not incarnate word Auburn and Oregon.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Yes, and Jayden Daniels had over fifty starts. That's what
you need to see, because I need to see the
good and the bad and the ugly. If you have
one magical year at North Dakota State, ah Man, I
gotta see more than that. If you had one great
year at North Carolina, I gotta see more than that.
(06:01):
But these guys love potential. The potential gets you fired.
That's why I would always be looking at taking a
quarterback in the transfer portal if I was a head
coach now, I would always look at somebody. Give me
somebody who's twenty one, maybe twenty two. Spend a couple
of years, and now I get more of a finished product.
(06:21):
Plug and play. You know, next thing you know, you've
got a magical season going on. And that's what's happened
in college football, all right, Robert in Arizona, Hey, Robert,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 7 (06:35):
Hey? Thanks for taking my call. Dan one sixty five
and six foot tall, perfect. Hey, I'm wondering if you
spend eight billion dollars on a team, and if you
don't put any money into the facility and they play
(06:55):
outside on the frozen turf, I will on one playing
service and that was in Arizona at the Cardinals and
that is a lush playing service.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Yeah all second that beautiful, Yeah, Paul, team stinks field.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah yeah, yeah, we don't know how to play football.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
If if it was the other way around, where the
field wasn't good but our team was, we're all healthy,
you might take that. I still was amazed when I
went to Lambeau. This is when FARV was still playing.
And I went there and it was a New Year's
Day game against Seattle and I got on the field
(07:34):
and all of a sudden, I saw that the dirt
was pained, and I go, this is Lambo Lambeau. And
that's when Hasselbeck was out there. He was the quarterback
for Seattle, and I was in the end zone and
he walked over. I was with my son, who's a
Packers fan, and he walks over and he goes, oh,
(07:57):
so much for objective reporting or something like that. I go, no,
he's the Packer fan.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
I'm not. And he goes, look at this looks good
on TV.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
Done.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
He's pointing to the field. But it was painted. The
dirt was painted.
Speaker 8 (08:10):
Go damn.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Okay, it's still Lambeau though, beautiful. Seaton Poll question for
the final hour, what are we gonna go with.
Speaker 8 (08:19):
Yeah, we got a new one here from Paul.
Speaker 9 (08:21):
If you were the top quarterback coming out of college
and you could play for one of these teams, those
teams would be.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Dot dot dot Mmm, Paul, do you want to help out?
Speaker 8 (08:34):
That would be the draft order right now.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
The Las Vegas Raiders had this two pick, the Cleveland
Browns had the four pick, and the Jets had the
five pick as of right now, and those are teams
that are likely to take a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Do we know for sure that the Giants would not
take a quarterback?
Speaker 5 (08:50):
But right now, the Giants, due to tiebreaker with strength
of schedule, had the number one pick of.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
The draft yees, So you're gonna need a new coach.
I think they're keeping the GM. It's a foregone conclusion
that the Giants are going to either pass that up,
trade that pick. And it's Fernando Mendoza.
Speaker 5 (09:13):
When Dart's playing, they love him and the fans love
them whilst playing.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Yeah, I just I don't. I don't like the way
this could end.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
Vegas is the two pick, Tennessee has the third pick,
Browns have four, and the Browns have two picks in
the first round.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Tennessee's not taking a quarterback. Giants aren't taking uh, Raiders
are taking a quarterback. Jets are taking a quarterback. Is
New Orleans going to take a quarterback?
Speaker 8 (09:46):
They're at seven.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Chuck has played and quietly played pretty well for them.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Quietly.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
I don't know if he's a franchise quarterback, but I
mean he was his second round draft pick.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
He should be good.
Speaker 6 (10:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
The Arizona Cardinals has the six pick. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
they're taking one. Yes, yes, yes, money in that position.
I think Kyler Murray's done. I think he's he's elsewhere.
Speaker 8 (10:14):
Jettison.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
I think he'll be Jettison. He might be Jets.
Speaker 8 (10:18):
Oh who wrote that t shirt?
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Je?
Speaker 5 (10:25):
Okay, you're if somehow Bernana Mendoza had the three hats
thing based off these situations Raiders, Browns, Jets, and you.
Speaker 8 (10:35):
Have to pick one. You cannot go back to India.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
I would go to the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
That's sixty three percent of the audience say the Raiders.
I would go to the Raiders because half my games
are indoors. I'm gonna start there. I got Brock Bowers,
and I got Ashton Genty, and I still got a
high end Max Crosby. Now you need a lot more
than that. You need some linemen as well. But I
would probably like, you don't want to go to the Jets.
(11:01):
I mean, he seems like a really nice guy. Like
there's certain guys where you go, you know, he seems
like a nice guy. Don't do that to him, go
to the Jets. That's I still think Kyler Murray did
the Jets. The risk and the reward I think would
be fascinating.
Speaker 8 (11:18):
I'm sure the media would be understanding.
Speaker 6 (11:19):
Yeah, they see.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
That's another thing. Do I want to go to the
Browns and is Shirdor Sanders is going to be on
the roster. If he's on the roster, then it's going
to be a mess. You can't you can't go to
the Browns if Shador is not your starting quarterback.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah, see, you don't want to go to the Browns.
Speaker 8 (11:39):
Before nobody's wanted to go to the Browns for twenty years.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Brady Quinn wanted to grow to the Browns.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
Yeah, pulling the Browns right now have a really good
defense at least ranked really good, and they've also got
the fourth pick of the draft and the twenty eighth
pick of the draft. They have a lot of draft
gable this year. Build a team, not a quarterback. Build
a team.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Okay, but what are you going to do with the
quarterbacking position?
Speaker 5 (12:03):
Build a team, keep your door for a year, and
then reevaluate. But you didn't spend it on another quarterback.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, but let's say Fernando Mendoza is there to pass
up Fernando Mendoza. Now, I don't think he's a generational talent,
but I do think that you know, he's going to
get an opportunity to prove that he's a franchise quarterback
and maybe a safe pick for them.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Yes, Marvin, but.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
If you're the Jets, why would you want Kyler Murray?
And if you're Kyler Murray, why would you want to
play for the Jets?
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Kyler Murray may not have many options here.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
If one of them is another team, I'm going to
another team.
Speaker 6 (12:45):
Stay.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Okay, how about the Raiders? Could you see Kyler Murray
with the Raider?
Speaker 8 (12:49):
Okay? I know about the Mets, not the Jets.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
Like they're going through this now with Justin Fields, talented
quarterback that could run.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Yeah, but Kyler Murray a better quarterback barely? Yeah, he's
a better passer.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
Barely.
Speaker 9 (13:03):
No, he's he's a better he's a better quarterback. Yeah, yes,
oh no, no, no, you're you're right. But I just said barely.
He's not you know Mahomes or Josh Allen or anything
like that. That's what he's throw the football.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
He's got a great arm, he's athletic. He just he
has to want to play football. He has to want
to be great. You think that's gonna work?
Speaker 6 (13:25):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
I mean that's a wake up call when the Cardinals,
who need help every year, don't want you. You're a
healthy scratch. Yes, Tom, If Kyler Murray.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
Is distracted by video games, it doesn't like to put
in a lot of work, what's gonna happen since city?
Speaker 8 (13:40):
Exactly?
Speaker 2 (13:41):
You gonna see him there, the one Armed bandits there.
I just like the lights. I just like the pretty
lights and the noises. Okay, so the Giants, no Titans, no.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Brown's, Yes, Ish Jets, yes, Raiders, yes, Cardinals.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yes, But I don't know.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
If you have four quarterbacks who were top ten talents,
that's the problem.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
And I want you to reach. Yes, Mark, you.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Took the words out of my mouth. I was going
to say that exact same thing, word for word, I
don't believe you kind of word.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
For word, word for word, word up. Whatever happened to
word up?
Speaker 8 (14:28):
Was that cameo with the band?
Speaker 10 (14:29):
Sure was.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
No, but then it was also an expression and be
like word like somebody would agree with you, and they
go words and.
Speaker 8 (14:38):
More quickly from word up to just word chack.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
My word or word might be really like, oh you,
you wouldn't believe what happened last night, X Y and Z.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Word word word yes to.
Speaker 8 (14:49):
Then it was word to your mother with a on
the end, so your.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Mother word word yeah, a word there, mada.
Speaker 11 (15:03):
Like.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Marvin was talking to me about fifty. He was saying
fifty and I this documentary that he's doing on P Diddy.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
I go, it's fitty, Marvin, fitty.
Speaker 8 (15:14):
That's it. That fifty cents.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
I'm gonna just call him Curtis.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Yeah, that's it. Then he came back with Curtis. I go, okay,
I'll give that.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
One to you.
Speaker 8 (15:21):
If it's fifty cent?
Speaker 6 (15:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Is it plural? Is it fifty cents like a fifty
cent piece?
Speaker 8 (15:28):
Excuse me? A half dollar?
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (15:33):
I don't know how we got here and me coming
our way Let's go Yeah, word up, Yeah, word.
Speaker 3 (15:40):

More phone calls coming up on this Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Mike Golick, senior co host of Golick and Goldick on
Fan Duels Sports Network. He was uh well, he was
on the call for the Dolphins Steelers Monday night pregame
halftime show in Westwood One Radio, and good to see
you again, Buddy. Explain the Dolphins situation to me moving
forward into next season.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
Well, obviously, you know you're talking about the quarterback. What
do you do with Tua?
Speaker 13 (16:57):
We know that was a big cat money cap hit
with Russell Wilson when he left Denver. I believe the
post June first cut for next year, if they were
to go down that road, the dead money would be
like sixty seven million dollars, where his cap hit if
he's on the team is fifty five million dollars. So
(17:18):
you know, the question will be have you seen enough
of him? Are you willing to start over? And if
you start over, do you start over with a draft
pick or do you start over with a veteran And
are you going to be much better with a veteran
or do you just kind of retool everything And you're
sitting there at six and eight, you'll probably finish just
(17:40):
a little under five hundred.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
You're not going to have a really high pick.
Speaker 13 (17:43):
And oh, by the way, this incredible quarterback class coming
out of college that we all thought before the season
is really not an incredible quarterbacks class coming out at
the end of the season. So I Mike mc daniel
may may have saved, may have saved his job, which
(18:04):
seems weird because we thought he was gone, but he
may still be around.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
How would you describe the Steelers' playoff potential as far
as getting in?
Speaker 2 (18:15):
What can they do when they get in?
Speaker 6 (18:17):
I Dan, I don't think they can do much. I
really don't.
Speaker 13 (18:23):
Pittsburgh has normally been a running team and a defensive team.
Speaker 11 (18:26):
Now.
Speaker 13 (18:26):
They ran it pretty well last night, gain well and
warn basically split carries I think thirteen and twelve, so
that was good. Defensively, they haven't been what they normally
have been. And as far as Aaron, Aaron was incredibly
effective last night twenty three or twenty seven, but most
of those passes were to gain well, which were short passes.
Speaker 6 (18:48):
When he ran an unleashed one.
Speaker 13 (18:49):
He certainly did a couple of times for sure, but
I don't think now. The one thing that's in their
favor is you don't have a dominant Kansas City team
in the playoffs. You don't have a just below Kansas
City dominant Buffalo Bills team. This year, Buffalo will get
in to the playoffs, But is it the dominant Buffalo team,
(19:11):
the team that's been giving up a lot of run
rushing yards on defense?
Speaker 6 (19:16):
So I look at all.
Speaker 13 (19:18):
The division leaders and I could find a flaw in
all of them where it wouldn't surprise me if they
got knocked off.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Can Mike Tomlin survive another one and done in the playoffs?
Speaker 6 (19:30):
You know?
Speaker 13 (19:31):
I think if you step back and look at it,
if you get past the losing in the first round
of the playoffs, having just good enough record to not
pick late in the first round or not pick early
in the first round, I would say this, what what
are you going to get out there that's better? What
(19:54):
are you going to get that's going to make them
win two more playoffs? I remember you, and you remember too,
Dan Marty Schottenheimer went to a couple of AC title
games in Cleveland, didn't get him past the point and
got fired.
Speaker 6 (20:10):
Well where's Cleveland?
Speaker 11 (20:11):
Did?
Speaker 13 (20:12):
I mean, it's not like they've they've found somebody to
ride past that. So I think we kind of knee jerk,
though this knee jerk has been for a couple of
years with Mike Tomlin. But my thought is, when you
settle down and you think about it, you're like, who
are we going to get that's better? Are we going
to get a retread that we know or a young, new,
(20:36):
first time head coach that maybe injects something new into
the team.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
But is this sort of like Penn State though, like
it's a cautionary tale of Yes, they waited over fifty
days for his replay. They were quick to get rid
of him that decision, But then you didn't exactly have
the treasure trove of candidates that you thought you would. Now,
the Steelers would be attractive because of the stability there.
(21:03):
You know n State Matt Hamble, and while he's really good,
he doesn't have a good record against you know, top
ten opponents either.
Speaker 13 (21:10):
No, I mean all the I mean there was really
the one bell of the ball choice this year and
that was Lane Kiffin, right uh some araw who Somemraw
went to Florida was certainly up there as well.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
And a lot of coaches change hands. But look at it.
What do you look at when you go to a
new team.
Speaker 13 (21:29):
You look at obviously ownership, then you look at the
quarterback situation.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
What's overall? The Steelers are.
Speaker 13 (21:36):
A better situation then, but are they better than the Giants?
Speaker 6 (21:40):
The Giants have a quarterback, the Steelers don't.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Does Rod Rulers play next year? Pardon me Rodgers play
next year.
Speaker 13 (21:47):
In your opinion, boil Boy, it seems like it seems
like he's had a really good experience with Pittsburgh. But again,
if they don't go that far this year, what's the
expectation that they're gonna go far next year? Eventually, whether
it's this year or next year, they have to start
over a quarterback yet again, and they haven't found their
(22:11):
guy to take them anywhere since Ben Roethlisberger. So and
it's normally a team that's built on defense and the
run game anyway, but they still haven't been able to
find a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Let's look at the draft right now. The Giants have
the number one pick. Are you confident that they would
not be interested in Fernando Mendoza.
Speaker 6 (22:30):
No, they will not. They Jackson Dark.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
They found their quarterback in Jackson Dark.
Speaker 6 (22:35):
Yeah, okay, yea.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Raiders, Jets, Cardinals, Cleveland quarterback quarterback, quarterback, quarterback.
Speaker 13 (22:46):
I would say yes, But how many top quarterbacks are
available now? We know the quarterback position gets over valued.
So you have Fernando Mendoza, you have Dante More from Oregon, who,
by the way, can go.
Speaker 8 (23:01):
Back to college.
Speaker 13 (23:02):
You have Ty Simpson who can go back to college
as well, And most of the mock drafts I've seen
there have been three quarterbacks, taking Ty Simpson taken later
in the first round. So while the top of the
draft you're going to have a number of teams that
need a quarterback, as a quarterback worth a number is
there a third quarterback out there in college that's worth
(23:25):
a number four, number five pick. That's going to be
the question. We thought this was going to be an
unbelievable class, but it turns out it maybe isn't and
a Dante More can go back to school, even though
in Oregon he did lose his offensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Talking to Mike Golig Senior Golick and Golick on FanDuel's
Sports Network every weekday from three point thirty to five
thirty Eastern, we spend a lot of time talking about turf,
natural turf, artificial turf, the number of acls, the fact
you have a couple of marquee guys getting hurt, Michael
Parsons non contact.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
What was the worst playing surface? I probably know this.
It was Philadelphia by far.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
Was it was like playing on a.
Speaker 13 (24:11):
Twenty year old carpet over concrete, except where the pitchers
Mound was for the Phillies and it was metal.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
But could explain, could players complain to ownership? Can we
make this better?
Speaker 13 (24:25):
There was every dan, every visiting team filed a grievance
with the NFL before their game in Philadelphia.
Speaker 6 (24:34):
Never went anywhere.
Speaker 13 (24:36):
But I mean, remember Wendell Davis from the Chicago Bears
went up for a deep ball, came down, blew out
both Betel attendance.
Speaker 6 (24:43):
Just on the turf.
Speaker 13 (24:44):
You could literally stand on that turf, not play it
down in the game, stand on the turf and your
back would be just so hurt, so sore after the game.
It was by far the worst turf. I mean, they're
playing on a cushion of the gods today compared to
what we played on. But I get their thoughts that
(25:05):
if you're getting a lot of non contact, I don't
care what kind of artificial turf it is. Is that
bad for the player and is it enough for the owners?
Because we already know the owners have come out with
our own report that kind of disputes the players report
the NFLPA report of non contact injuries. So it doesn't
sound like the owners want to go change it anytime soon.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
How about we bring the owners out and somebody tackles
them and let them land on the field.
Speaker 13 (25:31):
The owners couldn't last that long out on the field.
That would be a good test for them, though they'd
be unconscious after taking one hit. We'd have to use
the smelling salts, which are now illegal, to wake them up.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Yeah, it's shortsighted, but it's all about money and if
you don't want to spend the money. And this is
where it feels like the commissioner should say, let's protect
these players. If we're going to add an eighteenth game,
shouldn't that be in there that let's do all we
can do to protect them from themselves with you know,
(26:08):
the blue tant and concussions and all of that. But
the playing surface, I mean, go back to an RG three.
Got hurt, Mike, Yeah, my backyard looks better than that.
Speaker 13 (26:19):
No, listen, I agree, and listen there's natural graphs, natural
grass surfaces that are horrible as well. I mean, you
you have I think in Vegas and in Arizona. I
know in Arizona where they roll in the grass for
the game. That seems to be one of the best choices.
Right now, you're only using the grass for a football game,
(26:39):
nothing else to make your extra money. And going back
to what you said about about Roger Goodell and the commissioner, Well,
at the end of the day, who does the commissioner
work for? Works for the owners, So I don't know
if he'll be able to he would be able to
make a decision like that.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Is there great team in the NFL?
Speaker 13 (27:03):
If push came to shove and you made me name one,
I would say the Rams. I would say the Rams
are the most complete team in the NFL. Close to
the great team, but the most complete team. Now losing
to Vonte Adams, We'll see how long he's out with
a hammy could hurt them. But I could make a
(27:24):
case for every leading division team in the AFC to
get knocked off right. I was part of the Me
and Ryan radkey for US with one called the Washington
hosting the Denver game. Washington had a wide open receiver
on a two point conversion to win that game with
a backup quarterback, but Nick Benito blocked the ball, so
they actually won it twenty seven to twenty six. So
(27:45):
I mean they're winning one score games, kind of like
Kansas City did last year. You're on the verge in
the playoffs. One doesn't go your way all of a sudden,
you're going home.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Yeah, and we saw what happened with Kansas City.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
You know these teams that have these one you know,
all these one possession games, one score games. I always
say I go against them the following year, because you can't.
It's not sustainable. I mean the Chiefs were I think
twelve to zero in one score games last year. I
think they were one in seven so far this year.
Speaker 13 (28:17):
Yeah, it's that, and it's it's turnovers like turnovers now
like the Chicago Bears.
Speaker 6 (28:27):
It's ridiculous.
Speaker 13 (28:28):
They're plus twenty and they have thirty takeaways, twenty one interceptions,
nine fumble recoveries. I would not bank on that happening
next year. Yeah right, So I put that and one
score games kind of in the same box of you
cannot count on that year to year.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Great to chat with you, my best of the family.
Happy holidays there you too, Dan, Thank you.
Speaker 6 (28:50):
Mike.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
That's big Mike Gullick.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
You can catch him every weekday from five three thirty
to five thirty PM with Mike Junior. Couple of phone
calls in here. Lewis in Venice, Hey, Lewis.
Speaker 6 (29:06):
Hey, dp.
Speaker 11 (29:08):
Uh sports time A long time six two dad by
two eighties. Yeah, I've always stopped stuff this, and it
just confuses me to think, like, why don't we just
go to a dome stadium to a natural grass now,
because I think we're past the nostalgia, you know, playing
(29:31):
at lambeau Field and Chicago and December, you know, because
it'll make life easier for both the fan and the players.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
Yeah, but Buffalo doesn't want a dome stadium. Green Bay
wouldn't want a dome stadium.
Speaker 11 (29:46):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Minnesota did adopt one, but if Bud Grant was still
the head coach, they wouldn't have done that. Chicago I
had if they moved to the suburbs, they might Is
Cleveland gonna build a dome stead?
Speaker 2 (29:58):
I'm with you.
Speaker 8 (30:00):
I mean, it.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
Does create a better experience for the fans, climate controlled,
it's better for the players. But we do like to
see the elements in December. We like seeing snow or
you know, you like to see something different. But if
they could all afford dome stadiums, great, it would certainly
(30:22):
make it a lot easier for players and also for
the fans in that experience tie in Ohio.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Hi, ty, Hey Dan, how are.
Speaker 6 (30:31):
You guys doing?
Speaker 14 (30:32):
Happy Holidays?
Speaker 6 (30:32):
To use in the Dan nets?
Speaker 14 (30:33):
Thanks foot solid one eighty.
Speaker 6 (30:38):
Hey.
Speaker 14 (30:39):
So do you think with all the field related injuries,
do you think the NFL and the NFLPA are going
to rethink adding an eighteenth regular season game down the road?
My thought process is, if the owners don't want to
fork out the money to fix the field, why would
the players want to make more money?
Speaker 3 (30:55):
They want to make more money. We're heading towards eighteen games. Absolutely,
players are going to get another paycheck. A lot of
times and I talked to two former players and I said,
what did you This was two and a half weeks ago,
and I said, what do you think about an eighteenth game?
And they say, we never think we're going to be
the one who gets injured. You can't go out there
(31:16):
thinking at another eighteenth you know, an eighteenth game, another game,
I'm going to run my risk even higher of getting hurt.
They don't think that way, because you can't think that way.
All you think is another game, another paycheck. Marcus and Jacksonville.
Hi Marcus, good morning Dan. I've got a pie of
(31:37):
the face bet for Christy. Here the Jacksonville Jaguars. My
Jacksonville Jaguars are going into Denver to beat the Broncos
ass on Sunday. Now, wow, I'm going to spot him.
Speaker 5 (31:48):
I'm going to spot him thirteen points because we're winning
by at least two touchdowns and we're going to win
the Super Bowl.
Speaker 11 (31:54):
I'll take it off there.
Speaker 8 (31:57):
He's got the Jaguars winning by two touchdowns in Denver.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
He's given you thirteen points.
Speaker 9 (32:02):
I would have probably taken that as a straight up
win for Denver, so I will totally go in with that.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
Yeah, I can't blame you. I'm looking at Super Bowl
odds now Ram Seahawks, Broncos, Bills, Texans, Eagles, Patriots, Packers,
Jaggs aren't even on here. They're not in the top
eight right now with Super Bowl odds.
Speaker 10 (32:23):
Um.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
That was a bold proclamation there, Billy and New Orleans. Hi, Billy,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 6 (32:31):
Happy?
Speaker 10 (32:32):
Honika Fritzi Sanna have two comments if you'll indulge me.
The first comment and main reason I called, is in
reference to the playing surface study being conducted by the NFL.
I'm sure they're comparing injury prevalence by surface but I wonder,
and I highly doubt by the way, is are they
also going to consider the long term health risks of turf.
(32:55):
There have been several studies that reference to carcinogen's and
possible effects of turf on long term health. I know
the NFL offense listens to your show, so I just
wanted to point this out to Park Avenue and just
a little bit later, I think Pauli's brought this up before.
(33:16):
Of all years, I think this would be a very
interesting topic or or proposal, and I know it will
ever happen, But if the NFL play teams could draft
like Archie Manning, for example, this year, knowing he's going
back to Texas, but then next year he's on their team,
I just I feel like that would make a very
(33:36):
interesting draft.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
Just like the Celtics did with Larry Bird. They drafted
him he was draft eligible and Read Arbac said, you
know what, We're gonna draft Larry Bird. And at the time,
people like, wait, he's not even going to be able
to play for you, and he was like, well we'll wait.
Read arback. He was playing chess. Everybody played checkers. Man, yeah, point, yeah.
Speaker 5 (34:03):
That was the nineteen seventy eight NBA Draft. Like you said,
Larry Bird was not household name yet they hadn't played
Magic Johnson in the final. The people taken over him
in the seventy eighth draft Michael Thompson, Phil Ford, Ricky Robie, Michael,
ol Ray, Richardson, Purvis short than Larry Bird's the Celtics.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Yeah, you know you're a great.
Speaker 8 (34:21):
When we're taking the guy, we're gonna wait won't play
for us.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Yeah, we're gonna wait.
Speaker 8 (34:26):
We're gonna wait for you, old timer.
Speaker 6 (34:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
The number of former players who have stories about Larry
Bird of all the players who played in the history
of the sport, more players former players have a story
about Larry Bird than anybody else. Because most players will say,
you know, Mike was unbelievable. You know, Mike put up
fifty eight. You know Bird was I'm gonna put up
(34:52):
forty five and I'm gonna tell you where I'm gonna
do it. But they all have a story. I don't
care who it is. Is somebody crossed his path and
had a story. I still love the Case Jones story
when he comes up to Larry and he goes Larry,
there's been a threat on your life if you play
(35:13):
in this game. And Larry said to Cac Jones, I'm
going to play. And then Casey Jones said, I told Larry,
make sure you stay away from the huddle justin case
somebody shoots you. And Larry went right to the huddle
and put his arms around Casey Jones. Uh, take a break.
(35:34):

We had Joe Thomas on last Hour, former Brown's offensive lineman,
(35:55):
now a Hall of Famer. He took part in ten thousand,
seven hundred and fifty teen offensive snaps in his career.
He was called for holding twenty times stat of the.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
Day, stad of the day that passed stat of the
day stat of the day.
Speaker 6 (36:14):
Here comes that?
Speaker 8 (36:15):
What stat of the day?
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Alrighty? Some basketball?
Speaker 3 (36:21):
Last night, Cooper Flagg put up forty two MAVs lost
in overtime to the Jazz. That's the most points by
an eighteen year old, surpassing Lebron James. He had thirty seven.
It also ties Mark Aguire for most points by a
rookie in MAV's history. Nikola Jokic thirty nine to fifteen
and ten. That's twelve triple doubles this season, twice as
(36:46):
many as the closest player, Jalen Johnson. Yeah, Joker, I'm
surprised when he doesn't have a triple double. Wemby talked
about Joker is the best offensive player, but not the
best player. He would have put Giannis in there over him.
I believe he was talking about centers and all around
(37:08):
player offensively, defensively, he put Giannis in there over Joker.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
Yes, Marvin, I'm.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
Gonna feel terrible when Joker doesn't win MVP this year
because the Thunder wins seventy six games.
Speaker 6 (37:18):
Yeah, yes, and then it's gonna stop him.
Speaker 4 (37:20):
Yes, how could the Thunder do?
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (37:22):
Yes, I just want to know what Okac's going to
do in the draft with all those draft picks, and
unless they're allowed to extend their bench to twenty piers, hey,
I mean they're gonna They're gonna have a treasure trove
of young talent there. Everybody will be under the age
of twenty five. Yes, Pauline, thunder have lost one in
(37:44):
a row. Dan, Yeah, thoughts.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
I'm shocked.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
I'm looking at some points spreads here. Let me see
the Rams getting one and a half at Seattle. I
don't think they're going to have DeVante Adams in that game.
Packers minus one and a half, had the Bear interesting
Bucks minus three at the Panthers. See, that's one of
(38:10):
those games in the NFC South where then the Panthers
win the game as the underdogs. Chargers getting one and
a half at the Cowboys, Chiefs against the Titans. At
the Titans, Chiefs are still favored by three and a half.
Speaker 8 (38:26):
Let's see what else do we have in here?
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Do we have Patriots getting three at the Ravens, the
Raiders getting fourteen and a half at the Texans, Jags
getting three against Fritzy's Broncos. Right, it's an interesting matchup.
We got a lot of football coming up starting Thursday night,
(38:49):
and you got Friday night, Friday Bowl games, Saturday Bowl games, Saturday,
NFL Sunday full Slate, Monday night Sunday Night.
Speaker 2 (39:00):
Get busy.
Speaker 5 (39:00):
Yes, Paulie phil River is getting his second start forty
nine Ers at Colts Monday Night.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
Yeah, forty nine Ers are favored by five and a half.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
Yes, Paul, I.
Speaker 8 (39:10):
Kind of wish for the story.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
I'm not necessarily a Rivers fan or not a fan,
but he would have snuck out the wind, got out
of there and they bring in Richardson whoever the O'Reilly
Leonard and it was a one and done, grab a
win and not get banged up.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
Yeah, I that would have been pretty cool. Yeah, yeah,
that would have been fun. Just a one and donner. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
that would have been fun. Thirty for thirty, the one
and Donner Philip Rivers. Let's see this day in sports history, Paul.
Speaker 5 (39:40):
Your nineteen seventy two Dolphins became the first team to
go unbeaten and untied in a fourteen game.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Well, you know what, I always forget about that each
year if they go and went undefeated one year and
never remind me your guy. O. J.
Speaker 5 (39:52):
Simpson nineteen seventy three broke Jim Brown single season rushing record.
Brown had eighteen sixty three and oj got two thousand
in a single season. And nineteen seventy nine, Roger Staubach
of the Cowboys played his last regular.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
Season game one of my favorite players and way ahead
of his time. You imagine somebody who Roger the Dodger,
that ability to run and didn't get into the NFL
until he was what twenty eight something like that after
his military service requirement. There, let's go around the room
see if we learned anything. Todd, you learn anything today?
Speaker 4 (40:27):
I did?
Speaker 9 (40:28):
Santa Harbor reminds us tis the season for competition.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Seatan, what did you learn? Jim Harbaugh has been texting Shirilmore.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
Yeah, a little surprised with that or that he told us. Marvin,
would you learn today you're quitting surgeries? Yeah, I'm done.
I'm done with surgeries. Surgery doesn't know this, but I
am done with surgery.
Speaker 5 (40:47):
Polly, would you learn Roger Staubach was twenty seven years
old his Rooki year.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
Todd, did I learn anything today?
Speaker 8 (40:53):
He did.
Speaker 5 (40:53):
Joe Thomas hated playing in Cincinnati on that old hard
turf as well as Soldierfield on the old Heinz Field
in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
We did it.
Speaker 3 (40:59):
We made it through to day. Fritzie Seaton, Mark Paula,
yours truly back room guys. We'll talk to you tomorrow.
