Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Final Hour on this Wednesday, and it turned out to
be a Meet Wednesday courtesy of our partners Heartland, Steakco
dot com man those Ribbi Steak, paninees, Awesome pork Shop, Milanaise, bacon,
rap filet, mignon, cream corn. Who has it better than
we do now? But we have to wait until after

(00:28):
the show for the other things. All right, We kind
of jumped the schedule a little bit with the paninees,
but they taste great, taste great. All right, we'll talk
to Tony Gonzales. He is a part of the Amazon Prime
the Thursday Night Game. Well, it's a great game. Rams
and Seahawks coverage begins on Thursday Night Football at seven Eastern,

(00:50):
So we'll talk to Tony. Also, Reggie Miller will stop by.
Should the Knicks hang a banner after winning the Cup?
They won the Cup last night? Anybody think the Knicks? Okay,
two questions? Will they should they? Marvin, I'll start with you.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yes to both, okay.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Paul, I actually don't think they have a choice, and
the NBA will absolutely make sure they do that said
they will and should.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Okay, Todd they will and should not. Seaton absolutely both. Yeah,
I'm gonna guess and I agree with Paulie that the
NBA is going to say, you know, we gotta we
gotta continue to pump this up a little bit. We
got to make this important and we would like for
you to hang the banner. Should they hang the banner? No,

(01:46):
they should not.

Speaker 5 (01:47):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Do you do it quietly?

Speaker 4 (01:49):
Like PM on a Tuesday?

Speaker 2 (01:51):
I I service staff. Maybe somebody like overnight, Uh, gets
a gets up there and puts it up there.

Speaker 6 (01:58):
See if anybody notices. Yes, hold on DP. But the
Knicks have division title banners. I know, so the Cup
because it's the Cup.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
It's more important. I know. You're the Knicks.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
The most overrated franchise.

Speaker 7 (02:12):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Wow, good question. Wow.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
People don't play the Knicks. They play at the guard.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
That is true. That is true. Can you think of
another building? Okay, yeah, if that was on campus at UCLA,
would it be different? But you do, I mean you
do go to the Rose Bowl. It's not on campus
like the Coliseum is for USC. By the way, talking

(02:39):
to a college football source yesterday, and I said, uh,
how much are these quarterbacks getting? Those who are transferring
and he said the going rate for a quarterback right now,
transferring a good quarterback is three to four million dollars.
That's that's the going rate. And you've got four or
five of them, and and these are notable quarterbacks who

(03:03):
are transferring.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Yes, Pauline, I just want to get this breaking news.
You can get the Emirates Cup NBA Champion hat on
New York Knicks dot com and shirt oh I like that,
and dish towels and so forth. Okay, yeah, all right,
all available, Okay, start of breaking the.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Call, right, It's okay. And by the way, the Dolphins
are going with quinn Ewers over to a tongue of iloa.
I wonder if this is coming from upstairs because Mike
McDaniel's trying to hold onto his job. Who gives him
a better chance of keeping his job? You could make
the argument that TUA does unless they've already made their
decision and they're like ownerships, Hey, we want to see

(03:39):
what quin Ewers can do. Let's bring in Tony Gonzales,
Hall of Famer and Thursday Night Football Tony and the Gang,
Big Showdown. Rams Seahawks coverage begins at seven Eastern All right.
Let me start there. How surprised are you Quinn Ewers
is starting for the Dolphins and Tua has been benched.

Speaker 8 (03:57):
I'm pretty surprised. I don't think who saw that coming.
But you look at it, the way he's playing right now,
it's kind of been somewhat up and down. Did not
play well last week. It's the end of the season.
They're not going to the playoffs. Is it one of
those things? You know, he's got the concussion history. Do
you want to keep him safe? It looks like sometimes

(04:19):
he doesn't want to take a hit. When he's back
there running around. It seems like he's protecting himself. But
I think going forward with the Dolphins, maybe they get it.
They want to get a look at Quinn because maybe
this is the end of the road for two.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
I don't know what's his contract situation. That's something that
you got to look at.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Well, they got one more year. I think it's around
fifty million, so big cap hit if they move on.
I don't know if this is a situation that Sean
Payton had when he inherited Russell Wilson. You're gonna probably
get a new coach in Miami and then are they
going to come in and you have this to a
contract and you got to deal with that. Or do

(04:59):
they try to do what Denver did and just say
to Russell Wilson, see you, you know, my coach wants
to get his quarterback in there.

Speaker 8 (05:07):
Yeah, it could always certainly go that way, depending on
the coach that takes some cajone's. So I mean, especially
with that cap hit, Yeah, I think to Actually, I
like to. I think when he's on, he's on. He
can play really, really well. Obviously, you know his best
receivering down Tyreek and that that hurts you. But if

(05:27):
the cap hit is that at that fifty million mark,
I got to believe that they're gonna whoever's in there,
I would keep him. I mean, he's definitely plays well
enough to you don't want to take a fifty million
dollar gap.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
But I think Russell Wilson's situation was a little bit different.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
But what's it like to play with a quarterback who
doesn't have a strong arm.

Speaker 8 (05:49):
Well, you know, I'm a tight end, so it's I
get the eighth to ten yard route, a couple of
corner routes. I'm not really burning him over the top.
So that doesn't bother me. It's like, hey, just give
me the ball, put it up high and go get it.
But yeah, that that that limits you for sure? Do
you think too, I can't throw the depot.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
You know, watching him against Steelers, that arm doesn't look
like you know, hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna have to
worry about him beating me over the top. I think
he has wide receivers, or he did with Tyreek, who
were faster than anybody they were up against, and maybe
created separation. But he had a couple of passes against
Steelers where I went, I don't know, especially in December

(06:31):
on the road in December. Uh, not exactly Steve Young
he was.

Speaker 8 (06:37):
He was definitely fainted this last week's game. I think
that put a bad taste in people's mouth. But I'm
also to you know, towards the end of the season
sometimes he's they want to get a look at the
young quarterback and then they'll make that decision going into
you know, the offseason, and and you protect your your
quarterback who's kind of.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
Sensitive obviously his head issues. I take that very seriously.

Speaker 8 (06:58):
I was one of the ones when he got hurt
before that said, I don't understand why you want to
keep playing with his concussion history, but maybe that's a
little bit that plays a little bit into it as well.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
How many concussions do you think you had?

Speaker 5 (07:13):
Shoot?

Speaker 8 (07:14):
I know for sure too, because but I went back
in the game. You know, it was a different game
back then. You got your bell wrong, Get back in there.
How many fingers I'm holding up? You're good, go back
in there. But yeah, I would say too, that was
I got lucky.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
I think, wait, but that's almost impossible. You had thirteen
hundred catches, didn't you.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
Yeah, yeah, round there.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
I mean, just the odds of even when you're not,
you know, catching a pass. Seventeen seasons, you think you
only had two.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
Maybe I had a little bit more.

Speaker 8 (07:47):
You know my last season, year seventeen in Atlanta, there's
a couple of times I caught the ball and landed,
you know, normal landing.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
On the ground.

Speaker 8 (07:57):
Part of it, your helmet hits the it's to pay
the turf, And it was like a movie like the
it opens back up, like the old school movies where
it goes dark and then opens up to the lights,
and that's how my vision. But that happened a couple
of times during that season. That was another reason I
was like, you know what, maybe it's time for me
to go. I don't know if it was necessary concussion,
but over the years, your head gets a little bit

(08:20):
softer as you get older.

Speaker 5 (08:22):
You can't take the hits like you used to.

Speaker 8 (08:24):
So but like knocked out type concussions, no, never, I
was never knocked out on the field or anything like that.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
You retired. You were thirty seven, thirty years old. Okay,
Kelsey's thirty six. What advice would you give him if
he hasn't made a decision about next year?

Speaker 8 (08:41):
If he hasn't made a decision, By the way we were,
I was texting with him yesterday.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
He told me tell you hello, Ohio boys. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (08:50):
I think right now he's got a big decision to make. Obviously,
he can still play, he's still putting up numbers. Is
getting it done in It ain't what it used to
be and everybody knows that, but I think for him
it's it's it's also what do you come back for?
You have to look at that. I mean, obviously the
quarterback going down with pat uh is are they rebuilding now?

(09:14):
Probably heading towards that way?

Speaker 5 (09:16):
Uh?

Speaker 8 (09:18):
You can you you know it's a tough decision, but
for him, what an amazing career. And I don't know
what if I was in his situation, I know what
I would do.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Are you going to the wedding?

Speaker 5 (09:31):
No, I don't think so. Think so I didn't get
an invite.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
But well no, I don't know if anybody's got invites.
It's early, it's a it's a.

Speaker 5 (09:40):
If I was invited, absolutely I would go.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Okay, maybe a plus one I'll go with him. Yeah,
let's go to chin Rhode Island.

Speaker 5 (09:49):
Is it in Rhode Island? I didn't know that.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
So you got insights, scoop sources close to me tell me, yeah,
that at jim Rhode Island. What does this game tomorrow
night come down to?

Speaker 8 (10:00):
In your opinion, Sam Donald, I think I think that's
really the.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Jury's still out on Sam Donald.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
I think in.

Speaker 8 (10:08):
Big games, absolutely absolutely, and it should be that's the
way it should be until you show that you can
show up in the play.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
And this is any young any quarterback.

Speaker 8 (10:18):
Out there, this is what I always say you can do,
even like Drake May, you can you can say, hey,
you're playing so well, it's such good football.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
And I agree with you you're doing well, but let's see.

Speaker 8 (10:28):
What you do come playoff time, come big time games,
big time stakes. Are you gonna be able to control
the ball. You're not gonna You're not gonna turn it over.
You're gonna be able to leave your team. That's what
the great ones do. That's what separates the great ones
from the from from average quarterbacks average good quarterbacks. And
so we'll see what Sam Donald can do tomorrow. He
cannot go out there and throw four into sceeptions like

(10:48):
he did last time. He's got to play well because
they got a very good football They have a super
Bowl team.

Speaker 5 (10:52):
If he plays well, this team could win the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Seems like there's a push happened yesterday with the NFL,
like now we got to start looking at these playing surfaces.
And you know he had the non contact with Micah
you know Patrick, obviously that was an injury by contact.
But what is the disconnect here? Is it just owners
are cheap and don't want to pony up to get

(11:17):
the best playing surfaces.

Speaker 8 (11:20):
You know, owners are they're interested in saving money and
making money. Uh, you know it's like the whole are
we gonna have eighteen games? I think that would be silly, stupid,
But we always the name of money.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Yeah, well yeah, huh, we are having eighteen games.

Speaker 8 (11:36):
Yeah, I think, well, I think that's silly. I think
it's stupid. I don't understand it. You look at guys
are dropping like flies anyway as it is right now.
I don't understand why you would want an extra game.
But yeah, the surface, that's another thing too. What is
the safest surface out there? They have data to prove
it that grass is the best. You can do it
if you have, you know, just put pony up the
extra money. You're making a lot of money.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
Anyway.

Speaker 8 (11:58):
I don't understand it, but I guess you know. Also,
I don't own a football team.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
I got some information yesterday and and I don't know
if it's been made public. PAULI have you Did you
see that information that I sent to you guys on
the injuries with the different playing surfaces.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
I didn't see that out there.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
So it actually had it ranked surfaces with acls, achilles,
other injuries, so each category and all of these stadiums,
so it would either be low, medium or high risk.
And it's out there. That information is there, and it's
that specific each category it would be like Achilles tears, acls,

(12:43):
sprained ankles. I mean crazy, Do you want nat? Do
you want regular grass? Is that what you would want
to play on?

Speaker 8 (12:50):
Regular glad? I think you ask any player, they all
prefer grass. It's these are on your body. It's just
it's natural, it gives. That's that's the stuff you want
to playing on. For sure, without without a question.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
I think, uh, you mentioned Seattle can go to the
Super Bowl? How good are the Rams?

Speaker 5 (13:08):
Rams? Right now? They give my top nod.

Speaker 8 (13:13):
A complete football team, and I loved how they've evolved.

Speaker 5 (13:17):
Sean McVay is such a good coach.

Speaker 8 (13:19):
They're using that heavy personnelity, using those two running backs
with Blake and Kyrin like it is. It's fun to
watch the schemes that he keeps coming up with. In
Matthew Stafford, you protect him and he'll give you the world.
You know, he'll go out there and play at this.
He'll probably get the MVP this year. The defense looks great.

(13:41):
This is and they're still pretty young too. I mean,
they're gonna be pretty good for a while, but right now,
for sure, they seem to be the most complete team.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
Out there.

Speaker 8 (13:51):
Because of the way Matthew Stafford is playing that it
makes them very dangerous, especially obviously in the NFC.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
I think that's they're the best team.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
I forget who it was an analyst on last week
and they talked about the difference when you get older
at quarterback, like Aaron Rodgers doesn't want to get hit.
You know, you play because you're like, damn, this is
gonna hurt when you're younger. But then you get older
and you're like, uh, I know this is going to hurt.
I'm not going to take take the hit, and you
play differently. But as a player who gets hit on

(14:21):
every play, how do you view your quarterback when he
hangs in there and knows that extra split second it's
he's going to get crushed, but it could mean a touchdown.

Speaker 8 (14:32):
Yeah, that's that's where you have all the respect in
the world. And Matthew Stafford is one of the toughest
damn quarterbacks you ever played the position.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
The way he goes.

Speaker 8 (14:41):
Out there and puts his body on the line and
keeps coming back, and it makes you want to play
harder for that guy. It makes you trust, like, it
makes you love that guy, and that all goes in
the winning and you've got a guy who's gonna put
his body online to get the win. You'll go the distance,
You'll do whatever it takes form.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Have fun tomorrow night. Thanks again for Joe his tone.

Speaker 5 (15:01):
Nag you guy, appreciate man.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
That's Tony Gonzalez, Hall of Famer. So fifteen thousand receiving
yards and he had thirteen hundred and twenty five catches.
Yeah pulling.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
This is one of my favorite Tony Gonzalez stats. And
this I don't know who's got better than this. He
was first team All Pro at twenty three and at
age thirty six. That's like Reggie white stuff. Yeah, first
team All Pro.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
He was a fourteen time pro bowler, back when it
meant something to be a pro bowler. Red gi Aloisius

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Reggie Aloysius Miller Junior, the third Hall of Famer NBC
Sports NBA Lead game Analyst. I'll start with this, should
they will they hang a banner in the garden after
winning the Cup?

Speaker 5 (16:36):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (16:36):
They will?

Speaker 5 (16:37):
They absolutely sure. Yes, this is a big moment for
the Knicks. I think it's a big moment for any team. Now,
remember in the inaugural season when the Lakers won it,
there was a lot of wrangling from the Lakers side
of We're not gonna hang out an end season championship.

(17:00):
All we hanging is championship banners in retired numbers. What
did the Lakers end up doing hanging a banner in crypto?
So yes, absolutely, if I'm the Knicks, because this is
a great building block for what's to come down the road,
and you can always revert back and look up into

(17:20):
the rafters and see that end season tournament banner hanging
there and say, hey, as a team, this is something
that we achieved, and this is something we have bigger goals.
Don't get me wrong with winning a championship, but this
is a building block for this team.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
All right, let me play conspiracy theorist. Do you think
maybe the commissioner asked the Lakers to hang the banner
encourage them, we want this to be important, we want
this to be bigger, and probably would say that to
the Knicks.

Speaker 5 (17:58):
Yes, okay, I think it came down from the top. Yes,
So I think Commissioner Silver talked to the bus family
and said, basically, hang this banner because everyone else will
fall in line. Milwaukee has done it, they won last year.
My only cautionary tale to this is the last two

(18:20):
winners of this tournament never got past the second round. Again,
this is an early sample size, but the Lakers didn't
get past the second round in the playoffs two years ago.
Milwaukee didn't get past the second round in the playoffs
a year ago. Again, small sample size, But to me,
the Knick or excuse me, the yeah, the Knicks are

(18:43):
a better team than those last two champions. I believe,
so in the East is not as dominant as the West.
So I think the Knicks are sitting pretty good right now.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
Do you feel robbed that you didn't get a chance
to play for the cup?

Speaker 5 (19:01):
No? But I think it's a cool concept. Oh, I
mean not really, you jentleman.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
I think when you went to the finals and you
guys lost, does the second place team get anything?

Speaker 5 (19:22):
A pat on the bat?

Speaker 2 (19:23):
That's it. You don't get a you don't get a
runner up banner?

Speaker 5 (19:29):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 2 (19:30):
But wouldn't that be something you would put in the rafters?
That absolutely not. I would not put a runner up
banner in at the time Casco field House now is
game Bridge. Absolutely not.

Speaker 5 (19:43):
We have Eastern Conference champion banners I believe hanging in there.
But I would not. Absolutely not. Am I going to
put a runner up banner up? Absolutely? That would be
painful to watch theodore to look up every that's painful.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
But putting the Eastern Conference banner up is kind of
saying we finished runner up.

Speaker 5 (20:09):
There you go up. You know.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
I do like what this tournament meant for the Spurs,
because you want to play in some important games before
you get to the playoffs. It's a young team, and
I think playing in a big game, playing in Vegas,
playing for some extra money, and playing for the Cup.
In all seriousness, I think this is really something that
could be beneficial for this Spurs team.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
What do you think, lad, who did Milwaukee beat in
the NBA Cup a year ago? I believe they are
the current NBA champions? Am I correct? Yeah? Building for
young teams. So if you're the Spurs, you beat the

(20:57):
Lakers in La Luca Lebron Austin Reeves, then not only that,
you beat the defending champs in Vegas in the semi
final game, a great game, and then you lose in
the finals to the Knicks. If you're if you're Wimby
in crew, these are great building blocks for our young team.

(21:21):
And on top of that, Wimby's on minies restrictions, so
we didn't see the full capability of him. If I'm
the Furs, I'm in a great position right now.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
How many teams can win the West?

Speaker 5 (21:39):
Five? Ok, see Denver, Houston. A lot would have to
happen with the Lakers, but they can four. I would
say those four four.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
So I got the only career you got thunder nuggatge, Rockets, Lakers.
So these are the best odds as of today. The
best odds starts with four teams in the West Thunder Nuggets, Rockets, Lakers, Knicks, Pistons, Cabs, Spurs.

(22:14):
So yeah, four teams, four teams, all right.

Speaker 5 (22:17):
The only thing on that odds list I would probably
put lower just because I have not liked how they
played all season long is the Cleveland Cavaliers. Very disappointing
start to the season in my opinion, this is a
team that had the second best overall record a year ago,
they ran away with the Eastern Conference, and they were

(22:38):
very disappointing in the playoffs, losing to my beloved Indiana
Pacers in the second round. But they have not shown
any fight or desire. I know injuries have been a
little bit a part of it, but I've been very disappointed,
not to say that they can't. Right now, Detroit the
Knicks are the two clear favorites in the East. Orlando

(23:03):
is kind of looking over their shoulder a little bit,
and then to me, this is where Cleveland falls in
a little bit.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
Yeah, this is the window of opportunity for the Knicks
because now Detroit was a surprise last year. They've played
really well, been consistent. The Cavs are a disappointment. Boston's
banged up, sixers banged up, So it feels like this
is the year for the Knicks to go to the
NBA Finals.

Speaker 5 (23:29):
I would to be absolutely shocked if the Knicks do
not represent the East.

Speaker 2 (23:35):
Okay, now again, there's.

Speaker 5 (23:36):
A lot of work to be done, and I love
how Detroit has started the season and how they played,
But it comes down to this, and these two teams
faced to one another in last year's playoffs. Do you
trust Kay Cunningham and Detroit in these big moments because

(23:57):
I've seen We've seen Jalen Brunson against Detroit in Detroit.
I just trust the Knicks more. And you could say
what you want about Brunson and Karl Anthony Towns defensively,
give me Josh Hart, give me O g give me

(24:18):
m Carol Bridges, give me Deuce. I just trust those
dudes more come playoff time, because I know at the
end of the day, the ball is going to be
in the hands of Jalen Brunson and the dude just delivers.
I just trust the Knicks more. Not to say that
Detroit can beat them, because they certainly can, but Durham

(24:40):
is going to have to continue to outshine and outplay cat,
which he didn't do in last year's playoffs. So I
just trust the Knicks more at this point, at this point,
because Detroit has to show me. They just have to
show me.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
Did you know that there's a movie based on Dennis
Rodman when he left the Bulls to go to Vegas?

Speaker 5 (25:03):
Right? And I heard they changed the league guy. It
was Jonathan Major who was supposed to play Rodman, And
now I believe it's.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
Like the Keys stamp.

Speaker 5 (25:15):
Yeah, I'm in to see that because I've heard I've
heard stories about that forty eight hours trips for ther.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
What what did you hear?

Speaker 5 (25:26):
Well? I just heard Rodman strip clubs alcohol, uh and
twenty rebounds and who does that going?

Speaker 2 (25:42):
But how surprised are you? How surprised are you that
Phil Jackson let this happen and Michael Jordan allowed this
to happen.

Speaker 5 (25:54):
Why don't we living in a different time? Could you
imagine if there was TikTok and Instagram then what this
would have looked like? I mean again, I'm sure they
sat down, didis and recanted all the stories and stuff,
and that's how they come up with the script. But
we've we've could have we could have solved this in

(26:15):
live time with Instagram and in Twitter and all that was.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
But I think Michael Jordan said, if we let him
go to Vegas, she's not coming back. In the last documentary, yeah,
but but in the in the when they were deciding on, hey,
he needs to blow off some steam, We're going to
let him go to Vegas. Like I I can't imagine
that Jordan would allow that to happen.

Speaker 5 (26:42):
Let me ask you a question. This is what I don't know.
In that Dog, Did they end up winning the championship
that year the season that this happened, Yes, Okay, end
the line. I think at the end of the day,
Mike knew as long as Dennis is happy, because did
he's only really had two things rebound and get underneath

(27:03):
the skin of Carl Malone.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
That was it.

Speaker 5 (27:07):
That was his job with script and play defense. But
I mean his job. It wasn't like he had to
carry the scoring rod like Mike in that time. Scott.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
It's still amazing when you look at at Rodman from
you know, this springy kid with the Pistons to then
becoming one of the faces of the NBA, dating Madonna,
coloring his hair, and he couldn't wait to play against
Carl Malone. Like it was still an amazing story when

(27:41):
you think about it. He wasn't a big time recruit,
not a score. He was a scorer in college, but
you know, when he got to the pros, it's like,
I don't care. I didn't even want to shoot free throws.

Speaker 5 (27:53):
I think the Bad Boys did a good job of
defining his role when he got there, rebound and play defense.
And I think you've heard Isaiah tell this story about,
you know, when they used to face the Boston Celtics
and Larry would get upset having Kelly Tripuka and Kurt

(28:13):
Vincent and those guys trying to guard him, and He'll say,
you ain't got no brothers regard me. I mean, that's
that's how Larry legend was. And then the year they
brought in Rodman and Isaiah's saying, I got so, we've
got some one to guard do now? And it was
the worm. So defining his role and him accepting his role,

(28:34):
I think really catapulted his career.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
Talking to Reggie Miller the Hall of Famer lead analyst
on NBC Sports. I was watching a video where Isaiah
Thomas took a swing at Rick Mahorne and I think
he hit him and Mahorne laughed. So Mahorne is holding
the ball like people don't may not realize how much

(29:01):
of a bad dude Rick Mahorne was that. You know,
we we we focus on Oakley and the Davis brothers,
but Rick Mahorn was not to be messed with.

Speaker 5 (29:11):
Uh And think about that team Detroit had them all
at one time, Bill Amber, Buddha, Rick Mchorn, he was
a part of that. I believe that's when he got
traded or let go or when he was with Philadelphia
is when this happened. And it was almost like a
mosquito hit him in the face when he was holding
the ball like one of those He didn't even feel it.

(29:39):
But that's when you could let go of some of
your anger back and the day you can't do that.
Now now you see the whole everyone thinking and acting
like they're gonna fight, hold me back, hold me back.
I mean, if Dylan Brooks in the wrong really wanted
to get into it, Nick gotten into it. But that's
that's all for show. Come on, guys, I.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
Mean, who would you take if it was Draymond Green
and Dylan Brooks in the cage in the octagon.

Speaker 5 (30:12):
That's a good one. Oh, that's that's a good one.
I would take neither. There's one guy I would take
over all these dudes.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Current player on our test, Oh no longer wants going
to mess with my dude in the octagon.

Speaker 5 (30:31):
I'm going with sir Ron our test. One of my
favorite teammates ever. He might have had a few screws,
but I absolutely loved playing with. Our practices were better
than the games because you I've never seen anything want

(30:51):
to play de First of all, I've never seen anyone
to play defense like this before. He was so gifted defensively,
but he was tougher than I talked about my Davis boys.
But I wish I would have had wrong when I
had my superpowers when I was younger, I got long
when you know it was really Jermaine's team. If I

(31:11):
would have had him in my younger days, maybe I
would have some damn jewelry. Maybe he would have been
my wrongness. See, I would have let him go. Wait,
I would have let him do what you wanted to
do if I was.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
If Ron had to go to Vegas. But I thought
Alvin Robertson's the one guy nobody wanted to mess with.

Speaker 5 (31:32):
No, we didn't. Ron and Alvin Robertson, those dudes, Now,
that would be a cage man. I would put money
on that. That's pay per view right there, pay per view.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
I love that. Your your buddy. Mark Jackson tells the
story that he was playing dice and they were they
were like fixed dice and Albert Robert, Alvin Robertson was
winning all the money. But Mark's said that everybody was
afraid of him. They weren't going to call him on that.

Speaker 5 (32:04):
They were going to challenge him. No one was going
to challenge him. They knew they were getting cheated skim,
but no one was going to say anything to Alvin.
That was the first thing. John Law, John Long, who
was my mentor, Yeah, do not look say suggest anything

(32:28):
to Alvin Robertson. Just let it go. If he fouls you,
you say my bad when he fouls you.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
Back in the good old days, you know, back in the.

Speaker 5 (32:42):
Good old days when basketball was just clean and fun.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
Well, Vernon Maxwell, Vernon Maxwell's in that category two.

Speaker 5 (32:50):
He he, he's a loose screw too. And I love
the part of those shooting guards. You did not want
to mess with.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
I loves Happy holidays to you. Great to talk to
you again and Tower my dan As.

Speaker 5 (33:12):
I love you guys.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
Oh that's Reggie Ala Wishes Miller Junior, the third NBC
Sports lead game analyst with the NBA. That's it's such
a great story. And when I first spent time with
Reggie and Mark Jackson when the Pacers were in the
NBA Finals, That's when I first got to know Reggie
off the floor and uh, and Mark would tell stories,

(33:35):
but he's he would just he said, you didn't want
to mess with Alvin Robertson, who was only I think
six to two but played for the Spurs. But they're
playing a dice game and they know that Alvin is
cheating them, but they were afraid of him, so they
continue to play to lose money. All right, Well, take

(33:56):
a break, last call for phone calls. What we learn,
what's in store tomorrow after this.

Speaker 1 (34:00):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live. Last call for phone calls.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
What we learn, what's in store tomorrow this day in
sports history, once again, the Dolphins are benching to a
tongue of Ialoa, and they are going to go with
Quinn Ewers, the former Texas and Ohio State quarterback. And
it looks like the final three games of the regular season.
PAULI has a quick football quiz.

Speaker 4 (34:32):
You ready, Yes, this is based off our last guest
earlier this hour, Tony Gonzalez. He had a thirteen year gap.
He was a first time All Pro a bunch of
times with first team All Pro at twenty four and
then thirty seven. That's thirteen years between selections. There's only
one other player that had that long of a gap
in All Pro selections in football, in football in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
He Reggie White.

Speaker 4 (35:00):
No, but Reggie White had a twelve year gap, as
did Charles Woodson was my guest. Great guess, Charles Woodson
and Adam vint Terry the kicker.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
Okay, this player.

Speaker 4 (35:11):
Defensive back out of Purdue. I'm almost sure. Not Darryl Green.
Another good guess.

Speaker 2 (35:21):
Not Champ Bailey out of Purdue. I think he went
to Purdue ok. Yes, Morvin rod Woodson.

Speaker 4 (35:32):
Rod woods Crash.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
I was trying to think of all the great defensive
players that came out of Purdue.

Speaker 4 (35:38):
He's from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Rod Woodson was first team
All Pro twenty four and thirty seven, just like Tony Gonzalez.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
And he blew out his knee in a game. Maybe
he was playing corner at the time. Then I think
after the injury, maybe he went to safety after that.

Speaker 4 (35:56):
And he had six Pro Bowls after his knee.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Sartain, That's what a great athlete, track guy, he was
great athlete this day in sports history, Paul, what do
you have?

Speaker 7 (36:09):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (36:09):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (36:10):
Great one? Dan Marino nineteen eighty four. We wrote all
the records touchdowns, completions and yards in ninete eighty four,
forty eight touchdowns in nineteen eighty four, and let's see.
George Foreman hosted Starting at Live in nineteen ninety four.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
Also twenty twenty two, we were in my garage for
the Christmas party. The Vikings rallied from thirty three to
nothing halftime deficit to beat the Colts thirty nine thirty
six and over joy. Let's see. Oh, here's one Ladanian Tomlinson.

(36:47):
He broke Paul Hornings forty six year old NFL single
season record. He scored a touchdown against the Chiefs to
give him one hundred and eighty points in the season.
Paul Horning a running back for the Packers and also
their placekicker. Uh the first NFL title get nineteen thirty three.

(37:08):
Paully's Bears beat the Giants twenty three to twenty one,
and Wrigley missed that one. Wrigly so got that. We
got that Pole results, Seaton Pole results. We got up
there right now, Travis Kelce, what would you do? Would
you run it back or retire? Right now? That is
still had eighty seven percent says he should retire and

(37:31):
then the whole time eighty seven Yeah, Well, it could
be anti Chiefs bias. Maybe if he retires, then Taylor
Swift doesn't show up at football game, So there could
be a couple of mitigating factors in people's opinions there.

Speaker 4 (37:50):
Yes, Paul Man, we have NBA Cup news. This just
in from Sham Sharani of ESPN. The New York Knicks
will not raise an NBA Cup championship band at MSG
sources tell yes, the Lakers and Bucks raised banners for
the NBA Cup over the past two years. Nicks will
celebrate with home fans on Friday, no racing of the banner.

(38:12):
I will bet this gets reversed before we're on air
again tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
Do you think the NBA home office is going to
say to the Knicks, No, you guys really really love
that banner.

Speaker 4 (38:24):
Yeah, I would advise you.

Speaker 2 (38:25):
Yeah, you know what. The best way to share it
with your fans is display it with your fans. Yeah, yes, Marta, hold.

Speaker 6 (38:32):
On, but at the garden they have banners for Billy
Joel and Harry Styles. But you're not going to put
up the NBA Cup the goal.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
Yeah, but Billy Joel I understand that. That's an incredible
feat and last night was too.

Speaker 5 (38:44):
Mmmm ah.

Speaker 2 (38:49):
Yes, Todd is part of that.

Speaker 10 (38:51):
Because they think they're close to a championship and they
were a team that was just a disaster with very
few wins, then maybe they would be more amenable to
let's put that up. As be a long time before
we come close to celebrating anything.

Speaker 2 (39:02):
With the Spurs. Put that banner up. If they had won,
I think they would, Yes, Marvion.

Speaker 3 (39:11):
They've won championships in the past forty years, so they Yeah.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
No, that's what I'm saying. They got actual championship banners.

Speaker 6 (39:16):
I think they might put up a small banner. But
the Nicks the nerve, well, you know, we're too good
for that. No, you're not too good for anything.

Speaker 5 (39:23):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (39:24):
It feels like that owner will be like, I like nice,
you know, shiny things and new things, and let's put
the banner up.

Speaker 10 (39:31):
Yes, Tom, Yeah, but those passionate, crazy New York fans,
I think they would mock that and be pissed off
that they would hang something like that.

Speaker 3 (39:36):
Let's celebrate when we win the actual championship.

Speaker 5 (39:38):
This is ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (39:39):
Take that thing down.

Speaker 2 (39:40):
Nate in La Hi, Nate.

Speaker 7 (39:44):
More in DP quick shut out with Tyler that he
deserves the raise. A couple of comments about the NBA Cup.
Knicks don't need a banner when they got Spike Lee,
I'm sure they'll give him a jacket to display and
then the picket back off of what Seaton said about
the NBA Cup, what about making at the North American
Cup and having teams for the NBA, the G League,

(40:04):
the Canadian Elite Basketball League, and the Top Basketball League
of Mexico, which I will out. Try to pronounce the name.

Speaker 2 (40:11):
Of all right, thank you, Nate. Yeah, all right, good idea, yesh,
let's go around the room. What we learned, by the way,
meet Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (40:21):
I'm all for it.

Speaker 2 (40:23):
Now we are going to have a meat Friday as well,
and then I'll take a pie on Friday as well
from Fritzi. And this can't be one of those who
smashed me in the nose and then you put the
pie on my head. That's rude, because if you do it,
we have problems. I'm not laughing it.

Speaker 3 (40:39):
I don't think I did.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
Yeah you did? You put it on the top of
my head?

Speaker 3 (40:43):
Lay it on top of your head? Was jerk? I
don't even remember doing that.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
What'd you learn today? Rg?

Speaker 3 (40:47):
Three fields?

Speaker 2 (40:48):
The NFL needs to mandate that all teams play on grass.

Speaker 3 (40:50):
He'd advised my Homes and Parts is not to play
next year.

Speaker 2 (40:52):
What did I learn today? Reggimill absolutely love playing with
Ron Artest.

Speaker 10 (40:55):
He may've had a few screws loose, but a great
defensive player in extremely.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
Tough Thanks for joining us. Hopefully we entertained you. If not,
I will try it again tomorrow. Have a great day.
