Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Let me bring in Chris Sims, Pro Football Talk Live,
co host Football Night in America, and of course former
NFL quarterback. Let me start with the Aaron Rodgers cadence
because you played the position. Aaron has had the same
cadence for twenty years now, Green nineteen, Green nineteen. Now
it does change maybe later in the game when he
(00:26):
wants you to jump off sides. How did the Jets
get to this situation where we're talking about the cadence
at the line of scrimmage as being an issue.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Well, I mean he listen, he's a perfectionist, right, I
think that's part of the conversation altogether. And then his
cadence and how he uses it, whether it's to quit
count people and get people, you know, extra people on
the field and there's twelve guys on the defense that
they're making the substitution or his hard counts have been
(00:57):
one of the great things that he does through his time.
So I you know, again, I don't know what their
issue was the cadence. Honestly, like I've seen a little
bit of this and maybe I'm missing a little more
to the story than that I see. But either way,
he's got problems with he doesn't feel certain people are
on the same page as him on.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
The offense and certain areas.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
And you see, that's where Allan Lazard is the one
getting fed the ball the most right now, because he
feels like, wait, I got a connection with him. He
knows what I'm thinking, he knows exactly what I want
in certain coverages and whatever else.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
And you know that's that's where.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Rogers late in his career, he's very picky with that
type of stuff, especially with young receivers and making sure
they're on his page.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
But it's a terrible loss.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
So it's a terrible loss. Right, Maybe did I miss something?
Was there a quote or something about the snapcount or whatever?
I hadn't heard about it.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
So, okay, tell me this is Here's Robert Salah after
the game.
Speaker 5 (01:53):
Okay, last I think you guys with one or two
in the NFL apelly is now this year, I think
you're four. What needs to change to clean it up?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (02:00):
We got to figure it out whether or not we're
good enough to handle all the were ready to handle
all the kittens. Cadence had not been an issue all
camp felt like our operation had been operating pretty good.
Obviously today it took a major step back.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
I got you.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Okay, I got you.
Speaker 7 (02:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Well, you know, cadence is nuanced too, it is, and
there's a lot to it, and of course there's code
words that are involved in it. And sometimes you use
a code word like the famous omaha you heard from
Peyton Manning and all that that might speed up the
cadence and get you right into snapping the ball and
saying set hut. Yeah, they had issues yesterday, but they physically,
(02:43):
you know, it was a bad loss. Like you said,
there's no doubt about that. Their defense is very good, certainly,
but the offense, I think the big thing is they
don't throw the ball down the field enough. And people
know that Rogers likes to throw the ball short and
over the middle, and then they want to run the ball.
And you looked yesterday and it looked like the Denver
Broncos had everybody around the line of scrimmage. And we'll
(03:05):
also without when they don't motion right. Rogers doesn't like
motions and they don't use a lot of formations. What
else of the Broncos did yesterday, they blitzed them because
they said, wait, wait, we kind of know where he's
gonna go with the ball if we blitz, so so
what if he throws at two yards in the flat,
We'll rally and make the tackle and to be.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Second and eight.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
But it's better than him standing back there making some
great decision and great throw and Dyson up that way
like he did the Patriots on two Thursdays ago. Yeah,
that was a bad loss for the Jets yesterday, the
kind of game you certainly thought they would win with
Broncos offense not being able to do anything.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Really, why can't the Ravens do this all the time offense?
Because they offense.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
They got to right, right, they got to choose to
do it. I heard what you said before I came on,
and I mean, you're right. This is something I've been
pounding the table with great offenses. Right, great teams, you
gotta be great at something, and they're built to be
great at the run. They got a bunch of three
hundred and already pound offensive lineman. They got the greatest
running back in the history or the greatest running quarterback
(04:05):
in the history of football, a Hall of Fame running
back in Derrick Henry force people's hands that way, and
then all the sexy, big explosive pass plays they're gonna come.
I'm telling you, they're gonna play the Bengals this week.
They're gonna watch the last two games on film and
they're going, oh my gosh, we can't stop the run
against anybody, let alone the ravens now and they're gonna
have to play some defenses where Lamar Jackson's can get
(04:27):
up there and go, wow, oh my gosh, they're playing
us like this. So I hope they just stay with
it because they're built to play like this and this
is when they play at their best.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Eagles situation is weird. Oh, it's just weird. I'm not
all in on Jalen Hurts. I'm certainly not all in
on Nick Sirianni. Yeah, you can't fire Jalen Hurts. No,
and I just they don't. I mean, Sakwan Barkley had
what nine touches. It's that it feels like they have everything,
but then you watch and sometimes you wonder if they
(04:59):
have anything why.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Yeah, they're hard to figure out. Right, it's a roller coaster.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
I know they had some big injuries and people missing yesterday,
AJ Brown, DeVante Smith, No, Lane Johnson, But damn they
still got a bunch of awesome other players on their
football team to just get beat down like that. Yeah,
it's a little bit of a roller coaster right now.
And I think it's a little bit of what you
brought up. Like, I'm not totally bought in on Jalen Hurtz's,
you know, the greatest quarterback in the world either. I
(05:27):
think he's real good, but like, is he a top five,
takeover the game kind of guy.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
No, I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
And then Nick Siriani, right, he's an emotional guy ups
and downs, and I feel like you see that a
little bit with the Eagles. That was disappointing after the
way they played last week against the Saints and were
physical and tough and did all that, and then their
defense just get absolutely demolished yesterday and the offense can't
do anything. It is a little concerning. I don't know
(05:53):
what to think of the Eagles. Their highs are real
highs or lows are real lows. We'll see if they
can meet in the middle somewhere.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
He's Chris Sim's Pro Football Live co host with Mike
Florio on Peacock. You all in on Sam Donald?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yes, I am. I am all in, all in, all in,
I am. You know, I've been one that has said
for a while, Sam Donald's good. He's got skills. You
can win with Sam Donald. He just needs to have
a little bit of help around him. And as I
always say, one of my things, I always you know,
when you're around crap all the time, like he was
with the Jets and Carolina, you're gonna start to smell
(06:26):
like crap too. I'm sorry, and that's what happened to
him a little bit. But he's at a spot right
now that is perfect for him. O'Connell is a mastermind
in the past game, I'd never seen a coach that
can get more twenty and twenty five yard completions open
for a quarterback. Minnesota. I'm not saying they're the best
team in the NFC, but like, we have to stop this. Oh,
this is just a good story. Like they are playing
(06:48):
the best football in the NFC. They are for real.
They're not gonna go anywhere. So that's what we got
to get used to. And man, Sam Donald's been just
lights out so far.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Okay, so you got the Vikings in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yes, I would be shocked if they didn't make the
playoffs up of what I've seen for four weeks and
those coaches, and they got enough talent on their football
team I think to come through now too.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
And Sam Darnold.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Has more talent than Kirk Cousins, and there's more potential
with him at quarterback than there was with Kirk Cousins.
Let alone. They can run the football this year, and
that changes them a little bit too.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Right, Jayden Daniels is making it look a lot easier
than it is. How is this possible?
Speaker 7 (07:28):
Right?
Speaker 4 (07:29):
I mean, I'm shocked.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
I knew he was gonna be good, this good, this fast,
right off the bat, right on the heels of what
we saw last year from CJ.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
Stroud.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
But you go that only happens, you know, every now
and then with a rookie quarterback. I think the first
thing is he's incredibly talented. He's got incredible poise. He's
one of those guys like a Joe Burrow where just
like the look never changes on his face, whether it's
good or bad, there's pressure or whatever, he just seems
totally in control. The other aspect that I think needs
to be talked about. He's running the same offense he
(08:00):
ran in college. I think that's a great benefit. Cliff
Kingsbury has reinvented himself a little bit and added some
new wrinkles to his offense. And then he's got some
good receivers. But man, he is consistent, he's accurate, he's
poised in the pocket. We know we can run, and
I think Washington is a little better upfront than I
thought they were going to be. They can protect and
(08:20):
they can run the ball a little bit. They're one
of the pleasant surprises of the league so far.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Yeah, my two surprises this year, we're going to be
Atlanta and Washington. Now, I don't know if Atlanta's his surprise,
but I still think they have the potential there. Yeah.
I also thought the Jags were going to win their division.
How much longer do you stay with Doug Peterson.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
I don't think you give up on Doug Peters.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Back to last year, Chris, they lost nine in a row.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
It's an ugly look for Doug Peterson and Trevor Lawrence.
There's no doubt now two years ago, right, they started
out two and six and they ended up getting in
the divisional playoff game and had the Chiefs on the
ropes a little bit. So I think from that aspect,
you don't give up on Doug Peterson yet, No, but
it is concerning and they just can't seem to make
(09:10):
the big plays to get them over the hump and
win a football game. I mean, they're about to go
up twenty four to seven against the Dolphins. They fumble
on the way in right yesterday, Trevor Lawrence had some
throws that would have put oh man, they're gonna be
in the Texas are gonna be in a tough spot.
You know, they get down inside the goal line one
time and come away with no points late in the
(09:31):
football game where they could have gone up by ten points.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
So, you know, the offense, it's just so much work.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
And Trevor Lawrence is being paid like he's a superstar
to take over a game and he's not doing that.
Right You saw the guy that was doing that the
other day and c J. Straud he does it. And
that's what kind of leaves a bad taste in your
mouth right now, is Trevor Lawrence is not taking that
next step to be the guy that can carry.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
The organization Chiefs lose where she Rice maybe for the
season now, Isaiah Pacheco out with a broken leg. I mean,
these are really really impactful players. I think if I
Pachecko is sort of their identity, runs tough, you know,
whatever you need. And then Rashid Rice has been the
(10:15):
go to guy for Mahomes. This could be real. I mean,
I know they're undefeated, but yeah, I think you start
to have these injuries, they pile up. Maybe you're not
getting as much out of Travis Kelce, more pressure on
the defense. Mahomes has got to find another playmaker here.
So what do you make of the Chiefs moving forward?
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Yeah, I mean, one, it's one of the lead or
you know, unimpressive four and zero starts. You can imagine, right,
I think you would agree with that. I mean, And
the other aspect of it is I think we I've
been saying this to Florio on my podcast a little
bit too, like we got to adjust our way we
think of the Chiefs. The Chiefs are clearly a defensive
(10:55):
football team. They're in the second part of a dynasty here,
and they are a defensive football team. They are literally
like let's run the ball, let's chew up the clock,
Mahomes will make a few plays to make us dangerous,
but let's play through the defense. And that's what they've done.
The defense won the game yesterday. The defense won the
game against the Bengals. The defense won the game against
the Ravens. They've been phenomenal. The defense won the game
(11:16):
against the Falcons. So I worry about the Chiefs offense
in general. I guess the reason you don't go, like,
you know, four alarm fires because we saw the offense
not be that damn good last year and there they
were hoisted hosted in the trophy at the end of
the year. But it is a little concerning. Rashi Rice
is clearly the number one guy. At least they got
Kelsey going a little bit, hopefully that can continue. And
(11:37):
Xavier Worthy is so far just a trick guy. Can
they make him more consistent in the offense. But I
think now with this and I expect for she Rice
to be out that they're gonna be certainly looking at
the market for trade as far as a receiver when
it comes close to the deadline.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Good to talk to you is always Chris. Thanks for
joining us.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
Thanks buddy, say hi to all the guys. Appreciate you,
you the Man.

(12:29):
time off before you start the postseason or jump right
in to the postseason?
Speaker 7 (12:36):
First of all, what's u, Dan? What's going on? I
would see in a minute. Good? Thank you too.
Speaker 8 (12:44):
No, I definitely would like to go right out here.
I mean some time to time off, get your time off.
And I've seen that many times, so.
Speaker 7 (13:00):
I think. Uh. I meanwhile, I play every time we
go to the playoffs. It was basically right.
Speaker 8 (13:06):
I remember one time then we played against the uh
uh the Rockies, the Colorado Rockies and uh in the
worst series. They had to see down to wait for
us for a while, and they were the hottest team
in baseball right before, Uh, they had to weigh I
think they have to weigh about a week something like that,
(13:26):
and uh, we we we swept them, We swept them.
I mean, it's always going back at it right away.
It's always good.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Is there a team in the playoffs who can't win
the World Series? It feels like everybody keeps saying it's
wide open. Here are how many teams do you think
can't win the World Series?
Speaker 8 (13:49):
Well, to be honest with you, I have to say,
I mean, once you are in the playoff, everybody had
a pretty good chance and this and that. I know
the men, they have been investing a lot of money
trying to win, but it seems like once they get
to the point, they fall apart, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 7 (14:11):
And Uh, on the other.
Speaker 8 (14:13):
Hand, you see, uh, I feel like a Philly who
have been dominating during the whole season.
Speaker 7 (14:20):
They have shows from times from sickness, uh.
Speaker 8 (14:25):
The past couple of years in the playoffs, so they
had expected to win, especially with a pitching the.
Speaker 7 (14:30):
Staff that they have.
Speaker 8 (14:31):
So it's gonna be interesting to see, Uh, what's gonna
happen during this playoffs? And the other thing you have
Houston also that they play a little mediocrely at some
point during the season, all of a sudden they get hot.
Now they are back in the playoffs, and their playoff experience.
Speaker 7 (14:50):
Is huge. It's huge against anybody.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Is Ol Tubay Hall of Famer.
Speaker 8 (14:57):
It's like he's on the way. Seems like he's on
the way. I mean, this kid day one, he'd been
doing the special things and uh, I don't think he's
gonna he's gonna end up uh not being not having
the numbers that required to be a Hall of Fame.
Speaker 7 (15:19):
And I mean the way he's going is, I mean,
it's great, But.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
You don't think the cheating scandal hurts him at all?
Speaker 7 (15:30):
Well, how can I describe that?
Speaker 8 (15:32):
I mean, it was something that it seems like he
was collectively like everybody was involved. Yeah, you can't just
you know, point finger that someone special. Uh, they got
what they deserve, And I think anybody should put that
behind him.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
How often would you get like somebody said, second base,
did anybody ever tell you what was coming? Would you
want to know what pitch was coming?
Speaker 7 (16:01):
You know what?
Speaker 8 (16:02):
The funny that you asked me that question? I remember
that was that was at some point. That was something
that everybody was basically doing now what they were now
what they were doing in Houston, the picking signed from
second base. In my case, my special case, and you
can answer my former team.
Speaker 7 (16:22):
I wasn't good at I was not good picking, I
was not good receiving it. Like that's some point. Uh.
I remember, uh one of the guys that used to
be with the Yankees. Uh, I'm not.
Speaker 8 (16:39):
Gonna say the name, but he came to play for us,
and we were going through the hitter meaning and when
they saw that we wasn't trying to pick up a
sign or something in second base, we were like, what
you know, I don't do that here, come on, everybody
picking sign from second base?
Speaker 7 (16:59):
And it's a not so. But I I can't really
focus on that many things. When I was hitting.
Speaker 8 (17:05):
I got to focus on what was coming, you know,
and and and that wasn't that really wasn't my bang.
Speaker 7 (17:13):
But but I mean, I guess.
Speaker 8 (17:16):
That's that's the way they give signed the way they
catch it. The feature talk about how they're going to execute.
I think that's long going, so you know, and they
continued banging.
Speaker 7 (17:29):
So that's what it is.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
He's David Ortiz the Hall of Famer, joining us on
behalf of Draft Kings. Oh Tani's season, Uh, I noticed
that when you hit fifty four home runs one year,
you stole one base. So what do you remember about
that stolen base? There, David, I had, I got.
Speaker 7 (17:52):
An extending ovation.
Speaker 8 (17:53):
Once they made it for second base, I got a
play and it was like, I guess I do something especial.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
You have seventeen career steals in twenty years.
Speaker 7 (18:10):
That was not my game. No, but I tell you what.
But I tell you what.
Speaker 8 (18:16):
So the other day I went into a podcast hitting
the Dominigan, and h I say something that it got
all twisted once I got once I got out there,
and what I say was, I want to see how
MOB was going to play down not giving a tana
An NBP this year because while I was playing, I said,
(18:37):
they always looking at me, at the one dimension type
of player, and that's why I never got one, even
having the numbers. So Toanni is in a special player.
Chice is a player that I don't think we're gonna see.
It's one of the cards. I don't think we're going
to see a guy like that in a while, you know,
(18:58):
because he's a complete package. And I was looking at
his numbers.
Speaker 7 (19:03):
The other day.
Speaker 8 (19:04):
This guy, uh fifty son a spelling bases and he
got caught like four times. That is a stupid That
is like seriously, I mean, if he doesn't get an
MVP this year, and then I would really think that
there's something against the Asian that are not allowed to
(19:27):
win an MVP.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Yeah, and I remember, but he doesn't have somebody who
put up numbers like a Rod did to you. And
there's nobody close to Otani. If you had somebody, then
maybe they could make an argument. But I don't think
anybody's close to Otani where they're gonna hold being a
DH against him like they did.
Speaker 8 (19:48):
You. Well, I got my years. I got my years
even having guys like a ra put In no numbers.
Speaker 7 (19:54):
You know.
Speaker 8 (19:55):
But the thing is that what people don't focus on
is that guys like Otani he had the leverage and
the ability to give a whole line up stability, uh, chemistry, leadership.
I mean, there's so many things while I play, I
have to do so many things that the only thing
(20:19):
that people focus on was the numbers. You know what
I'm saying. I had to create balance. I have to
I had to take pressure away from some of the players.
You know, I have to do so many things. Plus
I have to do what I have to do on
the field, So I guess, I mean, that doesn't matter
to so many people.
Speaker 7 (20:39):
But if you talk to teammates, if you go.
Speaker 8 (20:42):
Around the Angel's dollars, they're gonna give you things that
you don't see it on camera. For any is it's
capable of accomplishing all that, you know what I'm saying.
So I know that don't having an amazing season. He
put the met back on the map.
Speaker 7 (21:03):
But a toime is number I like in another type
of level. It seems like do.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
You ever say to a Rod, let me have my
MVP back.
Speaker 7 (21:14):
No, I don't even care.
Speaker 8 (21:17):
You know, it was what it was, and and and
you know, like like people sometimes we hear me saying
this thing, and they might think I'm a throwing with
not with an MVP back thing. I don't really care,
you know, saying my time is fat. I had a
wonderful career. I'm a Hall of Famer. I mean, you
don't get to that very easy. You know, you have
(21:40):
to put so many things together to get there. So
but Mike, Mike Mike, I'm I'm a based analysis now,
and and I commente you about base. When I say
what I think, it should be the right thing. Other
than that, you know it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Let's let's play guess how much big pop piece watch costs?
Can you put your watch up there? Let me let
me see what you got there? Okay, that's a panorai. Okay,
how bad?
Speaker 7 (22:10):
This is my one? By the way.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Okay, all right, let's guess the cheapest watch in Big
Poppies collection. It's a panorai made famous by Sylvester Stallone
many many, many years ago in a movie So Todd one.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
Hundred and thirty five thousand dollars.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Okay, see, letna say fifteen thousand dollars. Okay, that's a
nice little guess.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Getting getting warmer, mar Marvin twenty five thousand dollars, PAULI.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
It's kind of muted for Big Poppy, a little low key.
I'm gonna go twenty thousand, even.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
I'm gonna go eighteen thousand, Big Poppy? How much?
Speaker 4 (22:53):
Was That's not fair?
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Dan?
Speaker 4 (22:57):
You already knew the making model of that right there.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
You might have might have.
Speaker 7 (23:02):
It's funny, It's funny. That you went into this watch.
Right here, This what was given to me.
Speaker 8 (23:07):
By my teammate, uh Clay Vocals and he uh the
team got I can't remember what was that I that
they gave it to me for. It was something that
I promised with in my career and the whole team.
Give me this watch and believe it or not, this
is the very first time I ever.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
Wear today today the most expensive expensive watch in your collection.
Give me the brand Rich Miller. Okay, hm hmm half million,
(23:51):
little higher, a little higher.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
Double that amount?
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Who okay, damn. Gotta be careful where you wear that one.
Speaker 7 (24:07):
I know I only wear it at home.
Speaker 2 (24:10):
You wear it around the house, right. Great to talk
to you, Big Poppy. Joining us on behalf of DraftKings.
They have a lot of their sponsors of ours, so
new customers can receive two hundred dollars in bonus betch
instantly when they sign up with DraftKings Sportsbook and bet
just five dollars. Great to talk to you. Have fun
during the postseason there, Poppy.

Hey, thanks man, I appreciate it. Man.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Chris Fowler was on the call. He joins us, Now,
how's the voice today, Chris?
Speaker 5 (24:50):
It was about sixty percent Sunday morning. It improved yesterday.
I expected to be close to one hundred percent for
tonight here in Miami.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
When did Chris on the call for the Dolphins and
the Titans, when did you get a sense of this
was actually going to be a competitive game?
Speaker 5 (25:11):
Good question. It was twenty eight nothing eighteen minutes in,
and we were there's a lot to talk about, though,
because we'd never seen a Georgia defense look worse, the
Caitlyn de Moore era in a big home game and
Jalen Milroe becoming the Heisman front runner with live odds
in the second quarter and it's twenty eight nothing. There
was a lot of compelling stuff, but you want to
see a competitive game. As they began to claw back,
(25:33):
you I think we get to thirty fifteen. At that point,
Alabama man scored a touchdown in a long time. They
had a field goal and a safety, but they had
stopped scoring touchdowns and Georgia had cut the lead in half.
And at that point you figured, okay, They've got a
quarterback and throw the ball downfield when he's not thrown
it to the other team, and Georgia has the championship DNA,
and you never quit. And also you could just sense
(25:55):
that Miami human nature, I mean Alabama human nature was
just throttling back. It was so easy, so shockingly easy.
And we didn't think it was going to come down
to what happened with the leads changing twice in the
last minute. But you had to hope it would be
competitive because George is Georgia.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
Not going to roll over and just to have that
And I said, it's a perception game, more so for
Alabama with a new coach and Jalen Milroe, who was
really good at the end of last year and kind
of having a coming out party. I mean, you have
these moments there that it feels like every Heisman winner
needs one of these games. Did Jalen Milroe maybe distinguish
(26:34):
himself as he is clearly the front runner in your eyes?
Speaker 5 (26:39):
No, I don't know, it's early. I think he distinguish
himself as a guy that has really grown and improves
since last year, right, Dan, I mean the question was
he makes electric plays. He also makes mistakes in big moments.
He beat Georgia in Atlanta in the SEC championship game,
he was clutch late. He goes against Michigan, he has
a crucial fumble midfield. Not his fault at the end
(26:59):
of the game, but he had the ball in his
hands that he couldn't get in the end zone. He
took that very hard. I think the coaching regime change
for him was really really important and valuable. Remember, he
got benched a year ago. Okay, he plays poorly against Texas,
his home state. He doesn't play against USF and he
spends the rest of the year trying to rebuild his confidence.
(27:20):
But he's still got that in his head. They sat
me down, okay, and they embarrassed me. Now, I think
with this new coaching staff, Nick Sheridan is a play
caller for Kaitlyn d bor but it's still Kalyn d
Boor's offense. It's a beautiful offense for the passing scheme.
They've coached him beautifully in the offseason. A lot of
smart people around him. Hey, when you get pressured, don't
(27:41):
run backwards eleven yards, don't take these disastrous sacks, protect
the ball, do your job and He's taken that coaching
really well, and I think we saw the freedom and
a confidence and a belief in himself that maybe could
only happen with a fresh start in that way and
being surrounded by a life smart offensive people.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
We're talking to Chris Fowler on the call for the
Titans Dolphins coming up tonight. He was there with Georgia
and Alabama. We know that Ryan Williams is seventeen years
of age. We're suggesting that he changes number to seventeen,
and then next year is eighteen, next year's nineteen, and
then next year's is twenty. What do you think, Chris?
Speaker 5 (28:23):
The number two is a big number at Alabama. It's
we're the number two on offensive defense. Both freshmen made
the big plays, and that Zami and Brown made the
pick to secure it at the end. No, he's just
so different, Dan, I can't even describe. It doesn't even
come through on TV. Look at the stats. You can
hear he's seventeen, But just to be around him and
hear what his teammates have to say and his coaches,
(28:45):
it's so exciting to see it. Dude, it comes along.
Who's just different? I wrote back down here to Miami
with the Desmond Howard after the game. He knows receivers
and it was just so interesting to hear his perspective.
He did about three different things on that last ask
for a touchdown that was just wow, are you kidding me?
You know, getting open body control to make that contorted catch,
(29:07):
split defenders outrun them. I mean. And I talked to
a pre game and I said, I don't usually talk
to college players pregame. It's kind of something. I try
to give him space, but he came over and was
just hugging Holly Row and saying hello. I'm like, are
you kidding me? This guy is that age and he's
in his first really big game and that's how chilled
he is before kickoff against Georgia and I said, you know,
(29:29):
you don't look like this is too big for you,
and he goes, no, sir, do you look like you
were ready for this from birth? And he said I am.
Speaker 7 (29:36):
I am?
Speaker 5 (29:36):
And he goes out in place like it. And you know,
when you lead your team in catches and yards your
first four games of your career and your team is Alabama,
it's just we haven't seen that. It's so exciting for
us in college because the draft guys already, where would
we take him?
Speaker 7 (29:51):
How easy?
Speaker 5 (29:52):
If you got him for three years, you got him
for three years of this.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Have you ever called a game where you can't hear yourself.
Speaker 5 (30:01):
We couldn't hear ourselves Saturday nights because we have a
technical problem. I don't think you mean that.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
I mean you no, I'm talking about the Oh so
you had technical difficulties.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
We had a power we had a generator die on us.
I mean the crew did an amazing job. The generators
you rely on that. I mean it could have been
a disaster, like no broadcasts. One dies and they bring
in the backup game day generator with a police escort.
They get it in to the stadium, and you know,
everything is computerized, and imagine a laptop dies and you
(30:33):
it doesn't shut down properly. You had to bring it
back to life. Well now that's times a million with
these electronic trucks. So we got up and running. But no,
we could not hear ourselves in the open. For example,
your mic just kind of goes out. But the crowd
noise was as loud as I heard it at Alabama,
which is not I would say one of the loudest
places on earth for football. It's a huge place, but
(30:55):
it's only the fifth biggest stadium in the SEC, and
it's not known for being I don't think what the loudest,
but they were unhinged and it was pandemonium in there
when it was twenty eight to nothing, and again at
the end of the last play. So I hope we
could be hurt on the air. We get that complaint
last night sometimes that you guys with the crowd was
too loud, but I was screaming as loud as they
possibly could some of those last calls. I can't do
(31:17):
it anything more day.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
How do you explain Florida State?
Speaker 5 (31:20):
Hmm, I don't know. It just gets it gets rougher,
it seems by the week and SMU going in there,
and it's weird to think about being a conference game.
But I don't know how to explain and accept the
confidence and belief or powerful in sports, you know, and momentum,
and I think when you have it, it's magical. When
you don't, it's fatal. I don't know what's going on there.
(31:41):
There's still way too much talent for them to play
like that. But when you have programs where they expect
high results and goals when those goals aren't in play
all of a sudden. It's really a test of culture
and culture in the portal Europe when you're bringing in
twenty five thirty new guys sometimes is challenging for coaches.
I don't know what's going on. It's they don't even
(32:01):
play Miami down here in Miami coming up and look out.
I mean, they better find some heart and some resilience
and some belief in a hurry, or it's going to
get way out of him if it isn't already.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
The difference in calling a game a college game and
then going into the NFL game tempo, any any difference
in how you're going to call the game or the
feel of a game.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
Yeah, I think it's a difference in every game feels different.
I know you want to be authentic to that. I mean,
I called a game in Buffalo last Monday. I had
never seen a game in that stadium. That's a college
like environment that Bills fans were tremendous and I had
a lot of fun doing it, even though it was
a blowout. You know, there are subplots and storylines here.
The over under is thirty six and a half. You
(32:45):
got two really struggling offenses, so we might celebrate it
first down in a way that you would typically do it.
You know, Tyler Huntley arrives about ten days ago. He's
starting from Miami at quarterback. Will Levis has had massive
turnover problem, and you've got two head coaches who are
the play callers, who are very smart people and very
(33:06):
intent on getting things going.
Speaker 7 (33:08):
No.
Speaker 5 (33:08):
Look, so here's the board. I mean the board for
an NFL kid's blurry. I'm sorry, I'm not blurry in
my head. But everything else if you could have seen
that charge, you notice is about half the players that
are on a college chart. So the names are are
much easier to get to know. The tempo is different,
and I think that you know, sometimes the energy in
(33:29):
the stadium is different. I made a joke that with
Kirk Saturday that it's going to be hard to top
this when you go down and talk about the Dolphins
and Titans one and five combined coming in. But I
think that I get excited doing this. I love working
with Lewis Rideck and Nanarlowski and lawa religion. It's a
fun team. I learn a lot every week about the NFL.
(33:50):
I think I know something about football, but this is
a language. It's different and new, and there's so much
to learn and know, and so many smart people surround
this production that I have a kick out of it. Yeah,
you're not going to hear a Ryan Williams game win
he touchdown call tonight, probably that energy level, but you
never know. We did this game a year ago. Dan
(34:12):
and Tennessee had an historic comeback. I mean, I mean
they're down fourteen and set of three minutes to play
and they win the game in regulation, which had never
happened in eight hundred games of that situation. So anything's
possible and we'll be ready for it once again.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Ryan Williams is seventeen to I know.
Speaker 5 (34:31):
I know viewers get they're giving us a hard time
about saying that, but know he should be playing for
Sarah and high school and Mobile in Alabama. He's out
making plays against the Kirby Smart defense and making them
look silly, so it is worth repeating.
Speaker 2 (34:47):
I think what was interesting is he skips his senior year.
That you're the player of the year sophomore junior year
and then you reclassify and usually you got guys who
want to go to have a gap year and go
in certainly in basketball. I mean, he's seventeen saying, and
he's not going to turn eighteen till after the football
(35:07):
season's over.
Speaker 5 (35:09):
It's happening a little bit more and more because the
nil money has changed things. You can get paid in
college and so it's a good reason to reclassifate if
you're able to do it. Georgie has a seventeen year
old guy defensive lineman. He didn't get in the game.
He might have got out there a couple of snaps,
but Williams being a star at that age and being
when Kaylen DeVore got there and has this meeting with
(35:29):
the team late at night, and he speaks to the
entire football team and they're trying to figure out who's
this guy and what's our future look like. The minute
that complete team meeting ends, Kaylen goes right into the
wide receiver room because he had broken up into groups.
He goes right into that room. First. It wasn't an
accident to get in the plane. And the first thing
(35:50):
you have to do as a new coach these days
is re recruit your roster. Because Williams did decommit like
a lot of guys you de commit to sit back
and way you're options and just like just hit the
pause button. And so Calen gets on a plane and
they aret zipping around to these places and Mobile, Alabama
was like destination one. To go down there and visit
(36:12):
with the family and assure him that we're still going
to throw the ball. Look we did at Washington Rama Doonsday,
Jalen Polpe. We had great receivers. It's a receiver pass game,
friendly offense. And talk to the family, here's who I am,
and get them on board. And they did it. And
you see what happened on Saturday night. It was an
(36:33):
important re recruiting job that he did right away, and
that's how he knew how important the seventeen year old
kid was.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
Yeah, that's a great point. Have fun tonight. Good luck
with an encore there, Chris. But thanks for joining us.
Speaker 5 (36:47):
If you love defense. Yeah, it's the place to be
tonight on Monday night. Man and joya Mantis.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
See it again, Hi, buddy, that's Chris Paller.
