Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
If you're watching on Peacock, our streaming partner and our
radio affiliates, iHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio for four hundred cities
carrying the program. So in no particular order, the Dodgers
up two to oh and the Yankees. Otani will play tonight.
The temperatures should be low fifties. It'll be clear, low fifties.

(00:41):
Dodgers at the Yankees game three. Giants will be at
the Steelers tonight. The Giants are getting six, but the
Dodgers up two to oh. When the Yankees the Otani
injury in the seventh inning, Dave Roberts said he will play.
And Freddie Freeman is cruising and he is crushing homering
in the first two games. A little bit later on

(01:02):
John Shombe, who is calling the World Series for the Mothership,
Ross Tucker, Our good Buddy was on the call for
Cleveland and the Ravens yesterday. We'll give you our best

Rapid Radios dot com froup to sixty percent off and
free shipping. A lot of football yesterday over the weekend
as well. And this is when we start to take
out the show and we start to throw some dirt
on some teams. Dirt on the Bengals, question mark. Probably

(02:10):
dirt on the Jets, Yes, dirt on the Jags.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yes, dirt on the Cowboys, question mark.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
But the Eagles handle the Bengals the Browns over the Ravens,
Cards over the Fins, the Packers get by the Jags,
Commanders in dramatic fashion, bears at the buzzer, and then
the Niners last night beating up on the Cowboys. Let
me start there and then I'll work my way back.
But watching the Cowboys and it felt like they made
a late comeback. You got some garbage time numbers for

(02:44):
Dak Prescott. That's a team that is just out of sink.
You're watching and you keep waiting, what do they do?

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Well?

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Ceedee Lamb is great, but Dak very inconsistent turnovers. Once again,
defense is spotty. Guys are chirping at each other. You
got a lame duck coach and you got an owner
who's in a hurry to win a championship and it's
not going to happen anytime soon. As for the Niners,

(03:12):
that's one of those whew, okay, we got it. Maybe
not perfect. Party didn't look that good. You got another
good running back there, George Kittle. George Kittle is one
of those. Oh that's right, they got George Kittle because
he is still very elusive that he can make some
plays there. But that's one of those. You got to win,

(03:33):
you move on. We tend to get caught up in
style points. How did you look? Sometimes you just go,
we won, You're four and four. We won, that's it,
and then you look around. Seattle gets blown out at
a home by Buffalo, which was a really impressive performance.
Got to watch a lot of that, and I'm going, man,

(03:54):
Seattle's a good team. Buffalo has played really well. They've
exceeded experts because the expectations prior to this were too high.
Now it feels like they might be too low. Because
the Dolphins, they may get to the point if you're
out of the playoff hunt, do you sit to a
tongue of ioloa. That's what I'm curious about here. Do

(04:18):
you get to the point of no return of why
are we putting him out there? And they might be
getting close to that. But the new and improved Patriots
no longer soft. They end up beating the Jets. The
Jets are going into darkness apparently, and Aaron Rodgers, who
has blamed just about everybody for how bad they've been,

(04:40):
I don't know if he blames the media for this loss.
I think we got the blame for the last loss.
But you know, we're getting to the point where I'm going, oh,
the Patriots one, okay, with a backup quarterback who just
got benched, so you could put in Drake May who
got knocked out of the game, and then you go, yeah, sure,
Like now I'm not so Probably before I was like,

(05:01):
you got to beat Denver at home, or you have
a chance to win that game.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
You got to win that game. You have a.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Quarterback who he's supposed to be the difference. You won
seven games last year with horrible quarterbacking play. Don't you
think that quarterback could be responsible for at least two
more wins, because that's what great quarterbacks do. I'm watching
the Chiefs against the Raiders and Mahomes. Gone are the
days of fifty touchdown passes forty touchdown passes.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
But man, oh man, can he can run a game?

Speaker 2 (05:35):
And I know there are quarterbacks Alex Smith in particular,
who'd always get upset When I called him a game manager,
I meant it as a compliment. There's a lot of
guys who can throw the ball. It's like being a
thrower and a pitcher. I want a pitcher. I want
somebody who manages a game and Mahomes was managing that game.
He would take what you know used to be you're

(05:58):
trying to force it a little bit now he's like,
all right, what do you want to give me? No,
I don't take that, then I'll take a little bit more,
a little bit more. Defense played great Now, granted it
is the Raiders, but this is a rivalry game, and
I expected this to be close, but still undefeated. You
may not be impressed by them, the lions of the team.

(06:19):
They are the newest version two point zero, greatest show
on turf.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
They're cruising. You put up fifty eight points.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
I know it's against Tennessee, it's still the NFL putting
up fifty eight. Now, granted that might be thirty eight
against somebody else, but you still put up fifty eight
points and looked impressive. And Jared Goff, I know people
go kicking and screaming and saying, MVP. I can't argue
with the numbers here. Now, he didn't have to put

(06:48):
up big numbers first half. They scored touchdowns, didn't throw
for a lot of yards. But you start to look
at some of these numbers in what he's done over
a four game stretch. So he has completed eighty three
per per cent of his passes over the past five games.
That is the best five game percentage for a quarterback

(07:08):
in NFL history.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Who now, stead of.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
A day, start of a day, Stantata Day, Stantata Day, this.

Speaker 5 (07:20):
Is the start of the day.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Lion scored fifty two. My bad.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
They would have scored another touchdown. But Jared Goff has
completed eighty three percent of his passes over the past
five games. That tops Peyton Mannings all time record that
was set back in two thousand and eight. They don't
have Jamison Williams for another game, as he's been suspended
two games. But back to the Bears against the Commanders,

(07:47):
the showdown the top two quarterbacks, and it wasn't a
good game. It was a great finish, but it wasn't
a good game. The Bears defense is good. They did
a great job against Jayden Daniels. You know, they're really
good except for on Hail Mary passes, Hail Maryland passes.

(08:07):
They gave up the Hail Mary at the end. And
boy I had I had a lot of thoughts about
this because it's one of my pet peeves when you
see defensive backs trying to go for the interception or
not knocking the ball to the ground. And then you
got a defensive back who's not even part of the
play to start with. He is, you know, Jawn with

(08:29):
the fans, Tyreek Stevenson.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
He's there.

Speaker 5 (08:33):
John.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
They snapped the ball and he's like, oh, okay, I'll
go over there now. In fairness, he did get his
hand on the ball. I would have fired Matt Eberfluse
because there were two things that happened there the previous play,
and Tony Romo did a wonderful John Romo said, you
know what I would do, Jim. I would do a ten,

(08:55):
twelve thirteen yard out, and then that sets up the
hail Mary, because you can't throw a seventy yards, certainly with.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Jayden Daniels and his rips.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
I don't know why you're not having a little bit
not press coverage, but you're at least up there to
make it a little bit more force them to make
that throw inside. And then time's going to run out.
Plus you have three timeouts. After they complete the pass
to who was at mclauren, then you call timeout. How

(09:29):
about we let's regroup here, call second timeout if you
want to. I never understood this. If I have my
guy's back, everybody's at the goal line. The only way
you can beat me is if you get into the
end zone. Okay, First of all, I don't have a
spy on the quarterback. They had a linebacker who was
a spy. Jane Daniels didn't got to run at fifty

(09:51):
five yards. You got a spy on him. How about
he rushes the quarterback, not spies. Second of all, I
would say, who is the guy who has the best vertical.
I'd have the guys who have the best vertical, and
I'd probably have maybe our tallest guy. Can I have
somebody back there? Cole Kamet who's six ' five, Like,

(10:14):
I need to have some height, and you've got to
be able to box out. You can't have somebody behind
the defense. Can't And he's the guy in the end zone. Inexcusable,
embarrassing with the emphasis on B E A R. Here

(10:34):
is Matt Eberflus, the head coach on the loss.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
Just got out of the locker room. Obviously, the guys
are disappointed when you lose a game like that. You
know that's a tough one to swallow after coming back,
But also told him in the same you know, same conversation.
That was really excited that, you know, the how they
battled back, you know, and they battle back to win
that game, you know, to be a have a chance
to win that game.

Speaker 5 (10:57):
So you know it's important to look at that too.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
No, no, no, no, not gonna look at that. I'm sorry,
I'm sorry, but this is how the Bears announcers called
the hail Maryland.

Speaker 6 (11:07):
Jaded Daniels sipped the back being pressured. Jade and Daniels
hemmed into the pocket looking for blockers. Watches deep pass
into the area of the old conception.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
That's caught by Noah Brown.

Speaker 6 (11:20):
He was the tip man, and this place is now
gone into Bedland mode. Washington put the miracle finish full
place seventy six yards and twenty five stinking seconds on real.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
That's the Bears call. Here's the commander's call for me.

Speaker 7 (11:37):
With the goal line, they bring free.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
David's backing up, gives himself some time now, steps up,
fires heads towards the end zone.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
It is.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
How many people are in the booth, It sound like
a frat house.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
The producer got in on it.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Everybody.

Speaker 8 (12:14):
Yeah, laughs, were so sinister too, like I don't know
what was happening in the lead up to the game, but.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
How about we try to replicate that jayde Daniels back
to pass down to the goal line, but go.

Speaker 5 (12:39):
Nailed it.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah, I'm watching. I text the dan Ants and I
just said embarrassing. It should never happen. And I don't
want to hear this. Oh, how many holding calls? If
it comes down to Kyle Mary, and you're going to say,
what about the holding call?

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Now?

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Move on?

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Move on? And there probably were.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
They were probably pushing and shoving and holding in the
end zone as well. On the hail Mary, you're four
and two. You got a chance to be five and two.
If you don't make the playoffs, you're going to look
back on this game. You had a chance. You stayed
in the game. Caleb Williams did a nice job at
the end of the game. You score the touchdown, they

(13:26):
don't have any timeouts. All you have to do is
keep the runner in in the field of play. Don't
give him the sidelines. He's not throwing at seventy yards.
He's not capable of doing that. Tony Romo even said,
you know what, they might have to bring in Marcus
Mariota because Jaden Daniels is playing with Bruce Ribs. That's

(13:51):
one of those where you look at the coach.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
And you go, what are you doing? Called time out?

Speaker 2 (13:58):
Settle your team, Let's make sure we got the right
people in. We know exactly what we're doing. And don't
engage with the crowd. Hey, guys, here's some things we
need to worry about. Knock the ball down. Hey, do
not engage with the crowd, and you know, egg them
on and you know whatever. Don't start celebrating early.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Oh my goodness. That's why the.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
NFL is undefeated. It's just every week, never, never fails.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live. John boog Shombie joining us on the program.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
Any doubt about it that that grand slam.

Speaker 8 (14:47):
Man as soon as it left the bat, you knew, right,
I mean, I think that's one of the things with
the call. As all of a sudden, my voice gets
a little growley because I knew right away, and I said,
holy cow, but I I probably could have something else.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
A lot of times when you're doing radio, well, you're
listening for sounds. You know, baseball is about the sound,
and there are certain home runs that you know, certain
guys hit a ball different than I always talk about Otani.
His home runs sound different than anybody else that I've
ever heard.

Speaker 8 (15:20):
Yeah, so when I'm calling the game on the radio,
I'm still, you know, pride myself on timing description. And
you know, John Miller's a guy that helped me a
lot early in my career. You know, now I do
TV and radio. But with that call, one of the
things I was happy about was I say, here's the pitch.
I want the audience to know that the play is starting,

(15:43):
that there's a little bit of a gap between here's
the pitch and then the ball hits the bat. You
get to hear the sound, and then my voice is
mirroring the excitement of the crowd as opposed to sometimes
the ball hits the bat underneath your voice. You want
to hear, you know, here's the and then the ball
hits the bat and you're using the sounds from the part.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
I used to do that when I did highlights on
Sports Center. I wanted to time it. So if I
said Maddox with the pitch. I wanted to have the
pause and then Bonds hits the home run, even though
it was TV, even though you know it already happened.
I wanted to have that timing part of that, and
I think that's essential with radio is you don't want

(16:25):
to hear something and go, wait, what happened, and then
the play by play voice is trying to play catch up.

Speaker 8 (16:31):
Yeah, you're trying. That's exactly right, and so there's an
element of it. The tip that I will give young
radio broadcasters is you actually want to say here's the
pitch a tiny bit before you think you do, because
you can't say here's the pitch on time with the
pitch coming because the ball's faster than your voice. So

(16:52):
that's one of the components of doing it. And once
you get into that space, it allows you to not
chase the call.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Let's go to the other end of the rainbow with
the Otani injury. When you saw that, like the crowd
reaction to that, what was your first thought, Yeah.

Speaker 8 (17:13):
You gasp, And it was sort of a progression, right
because he stayed down and he seemed like he was
in some discomfort, and then you know, as they're helping
him off and kind of stabilizing that left arm, you
start to realize, Okay, this looks kind of serious. It
felt like there was kind of a pall over the
crowd in that spot.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (17:34):
I will tell you this, Dan, that I go in
a spot like this where I don't love that because
he's the star, the injury gets this World Series more
attention in some regard. And I would also say this,
it invites people into the space that want to start

(17:56):
making predictions or thoughts on it. Whether he plays or
he doesn't play. It's baseball. So one of the points
I've made, and again I know that this isn't exactly
we want to figure out. Is he gonna play or
is he not? Dan, the Dodgers need to win two
games to win the World Series. They can win two
games without Shoeyotani. They'll be fine. I mean, like, it's what,

(18:16):
it's much easier with Shoeotani. But it's I know it's
hard for people to digest this, but it's it'll be fine.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
But it's like the star of a movie gets killed
in the first half of the movie.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
I'm with you.

Speaker 5 (18:30):
I totally get it.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
I get it.

Speaker 8 (18:31):
In terms of the story, I would I have a
little bit of clinical, like sucking the fun out of
sports and just telling you that, like Tommy Edmund get
hit two homers tonight, you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Okay, So the Yankees down O two. Aaron Judge is struggling.
Aaron Boone is married to analytics. I don't know if
he's married more than other managers in your opinion. We
can get to that in a moment. But if you're
doing the analytics here, you're gonna bring in a guy
who hadn't pitched in what five weeks? You got your
lefty on lefty, but then you have the analytics that

(19:04):
says that lefty is really good against lefties with the
bases loaded. So explain Aaron Judge or Aaron Boone's logic here.

Speaker 8 (19:15):
Well, his logic, though, is that is that it's a
two hitter scenario and he's got to deal with That's
there too, is I think what he's what he's contemplating.
So I think that you can't assume, you can't assume
getting Otani necessarily, and you're not gonna love the idea

(19:40):
of Tim Hill facing the righty. I think that's the
argument in that spot that it is. I will tell
you this, if the rules were not three batter minimum,
I think it's Tim Hill against Otani and then he
switches out. But in this instance, I think that because
there's there's that he's going to have to face two hitters,

(20:00):
I think that he's scared in that spot of Hill
against the right hander. And so yes, I still understand
the argument of a guy who hasn't thrown a pitch
in competition in basically six weeks.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
So I do I do get it.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
John Shanbie will be on the call for The Mothership,
the Voice of the World Series on ESPN Radio. Can
you explain? Has anybody explain why Aaron Judge gets through
the postseason and doesn't look like Goliath?

Speaker 5 (20:30):
I don't know what to tell you.

Speaker 8 (20:32):
You know, we used to have a conversation about Barry
Bonds until we didn't, and I would say, look, one
of the most famous books going on this topic is
from a sport that you know and love, and you're
a shooter, you know, and it's called the hot hand,

(20:52):
and so ultimately he's cold until he's not. You know, Look,
we talked about sho He Otani with runners in scoring
position he was nineteen for twenty two with runners and
scoring position, Dan full stop? Do you know what he
was his previous thirty at bats of the runers and
scoring position zero thirty?

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Oh okay, So yeah.

Speaker 8 (21:14):
The thing is, no one is capable of seeing it
in real time. No one is capable of seeing he's
cold and now he's hot. The results just happened. So
I don't know what to tell you. I'll tell you
this much. He's going to get hot. I just don't
know whether it's going to be in this World Series
or it's going to be a twenty twenty five.

Speaker 5 (21:34):
But he didn't get bad.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
Breakout star for the Dodgers is who so far? Maybe
maybe we didn't expect.

Speaker 8 (21:44):
I think you'd have to say Tommy Edmund. But I
would tell you also that I think that the one come.
You know, as much as the focus is going to
be on Judge, somebody else besides the three dudes are
going to have to do something six through nine, three
for twenty nine. I went into this series feeling like
the advantage the Dodgers had offensively is that if you

(22:05):
take out the three monsters on each team, the Yankees
don't have a max Munsey at ta Oscar Bernandez and
now Tommy Edmonds stepping up. He gave Hernandez been one
of the best postseason performers in recent memory. So the
supplementary players is a big advantage Dodgers.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
I loved watching the shot from behind with Yamamoto to
see the movement on his pitches. I don't know if
he reminds you of anybody, but it's rare to see
that much. He almost at times has too much movement
and trying to control it.

Speaker 8 (22:39):
And he's small, right, he's five ten. I get a
chance on the workout day he does this activity and
I was standing just waiting, and I was in the
second to the top level and I was in the
left field corner and he does this workout Yamamoto does
where he takes these five rubber javelins and he throws
them from the left field corner or to deep left center,

(23:02):
and he's throwing all of them, not with like a
crow hop it's basically one step and he lands all
of them within a two foot radius, throwing them two
hundred feet. And then the other funny part that was
hysterical is that the other fifteen pictuers down there including
injured guys are not even looking at him. It's not Hey,

(23:24):
there's a guy throwing a javelin on the track. They're
not even paying attention to it. And he's out there
doing something that I assume is, you know, extension or
getting over his front side whatever. But he's a pretty
special talent.

Speaker 3 (23:37):
Why aren't the other pictures doing what he's doing.

Speaker 8 (23:40):
I'm doing it today.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
Great to talk to you, Boob, Thanks for joining.

Speaker 1 (23:47):

Speaker 2 (24:01):
Ross Tucker CBS Sports Westwood won the Ross Tucker Football
PODCASS College Football NFL analyst. He was in the booth
Ravens Browns. Check him out on social media at Ross
Tucker NFL. Okay, did Jameis Winston beat the Ravens?

Speaker 9 (24:20):
He did, but he also got very very fortunate, Dan,
I mean, they dropped a number of would be interceptions,
including maybe two of the worst dropped interceptions I've seen
in a long time. On the first drive of the game,

(24:40):
Jamis had a miscommunication with a receiver Dan he threw
it right to Eddie Jackson, the Ravens safety, and it
bounced off his chest.

Speaker 5 (24:50):
And then the last drive.

Speaker 9 (24:51):
Of the game, which everybody saw, he way overthrew. I
think it was Elijah Moore again, and Kyle Hamilton, who's
like the Ravens' best player, certainly best defensive player, right
in his hands and dropped it. I think I just
saw online they said only one quarterback has four touchdowns

(25:11):
and no interceptions this year, and as Jamis wins, it
just kind of cracked me up because he very easily
could have had three or four, but he didn't sow
power to him.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
I think these defensive players are thinking, well, he's not
going to throw the ball right like they're shot that
somebody is that far off target where they're like, oh
my god, he hit me right in the hands. I know,
we get on the Ravens bandwagon, everybody's all on this
is going to be sustainable, not only regular season, postseason,

(25:43):
and then they have a game like this. This is
what worries me about the Ravens. I want to be
all in on him because I like when they have
that run and pass option there and Derrick Henry are
they a great team?

Speaker 9 (26:01):
I think they're very close to being a great team.

Speaker 5 (26:04):
Everything you just said, Dan, I agree with it.

Speaker 9 (26:06):
Look, I have him as a top five team in
my power rankings, and I know they lost yesterday, but man,
I mean, even on offense, they had some of the
most brutal drops Nelson Aguilar, Rashad Bateman like the Sun
guy in his eyes. I mean, I can't remember a
team that dropped that many passes offense and defense.

Speaker 5 (26:30):
That were right in their hands like that.

Speaker 9 (26:32):
But just preparing Dan for the game yesterday, Lamar Jackson's
playing significantly better than he did the two years he
was MVP, which is really saying something.

Speaker 5 (26:45):
And then what they did was they.

Speaker 9 (26:47):
Took last year's MVP, Lamar Jackson. He's gotten better because
it's year two in Todd munkin system. He's more comfortable
all those things. And then they added a Hall of
Fame running back who's still playing at a Hall of
Fame level, and Derrick Henry. I think the Ravens are
really good. I think they're going to be in this

(27:09):
thing until the end. Wouldn't be surprised if they make
a move before the trade deadline, but I think they
have a terrific chance to go to the Super Bowl
from the AFC. But it's kind of like the Bills,
you know, until the Bills of the Ravens, until Josh
Allen Lamar Jackson, until they beat Mahomes and the Chiefs
in the playoffs, no one they're gonna believe they can

(27:30):
do it.

Speaker 3 (27:31):
But that's I think that's where we are with the NFL.

Speaker 2 (27:33):
We know Mahomes and the Chiefs can do it, we
don't know if anybody else can. Because I said this
about the Cowboys for years, I don't care how many
you win during the regular season, can you win in
the postseason? The Niners, you have the greatest offensive mine
as your head coach. I want to see you win
a Super Bowl. Baltimore, Man, they're unbelievable during the regular season.

(27:54):
I don't care. Show me what you can do with
a game on the line. I always want to see,
can you win a game when you're not playing your best?
And that is going to be the challenge for some
of these teams.

Speaker 3 (28:05):
Now. The Commanders I liked a lot. At the beginning
of the year.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
I didn't think they were going to win the division,
but I thought Jayden Daniels made them different, and Dan
Quinn what happened at the end of that game, explain
that from let's start with the coaching with the bears
of what you're taught and how that play played out.

Speaker 9 (28:26):
Well, So I think this is important, Dan, because it's funny,
you know, I do the Eagles preseason games. They go
over these two plays, the play before the Hail Mary
and the Hail Mary.

Speaker 5 (28:40):
The day before every game.

Speaker 9 (28:42):
The day before every preseason game, they go over these situations.
So I thought eber Flus messed up drastically by just
giving them the twelve yard out for free with six
seconds left, because Daniels.

Speaker 5 (29:00):
Would not have been able to reach the.

Speaker 9 (29:02):
End zone without getting those extra ten twelve yards there.

Speaker 5 (29:07):
So that was the first mistake.

Speaker 9 (29:09):
And that was a coaching mistake because they need to
be up there more.

Speaker 5 (29:13):
You can't just give them.

Speaker 9 (29:15):
Look, if they complete it in the field of play,
the game is over. You have to have two guys
on the outside at about ten yards. You can let
them complete anything inside of that.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
So obvious.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
Why did Romo's telling us this is what's going to happen.
All you gotta do is play the sidelines, make them
if they catch something, it won't be twelve yards and
it might be in the field to play game over.
Tony is saying, hey, I'm gonna get twelve or thirteen.
Daniels didn't even get to the end zone when they
moved it up twelve or thirteen yards. You know it

(29:49):
got tipped into the end zone. So if we know it,
Tony's telling us, why didn't the Bears do this?

Speaker 9 (29:57):
That is a question for Matt Eberflus because I am
shocked that he didn't have a couple guys up there
to try to make sure they couldn't just get a
ten yard out in that situation. I think when they
got when he went out of bounds, there's two seconds left.
You can almost let them do anything else on the

(30:17):
play before the Hail Mary. Then get a ten to
fifteen yard out like the Bears let them do, and
then the actual hail Mary.

Speaker 5 (30:27):
I mean forget.

Speaker 9 (30:28):
I mean you're probably asking, but the Stevenson kid, I
have no idea what was going through his head in
that moment. But the thing that's really stunning to me.
Number One, they're taught to knock it down. He tipped
it up. You never ever ever tip it up, you

(30:48):
try to bat it down. And then secondly, the defense
is always supposed to have because they have the numbers,
they don't have five offensive linemen up there blocking, So
the defense is always supposed to have one guy in
front of everybody, another guy behind everybody, and then the
other two or three guys are the ones jumping up
and trying to bat it down. They had nobody behind

(31:11):
the other thing too. Dan and I said this on
social media, and I saw that Aaron glennon the Lion
did it last week. In that situation, the Bears rushed four,
but the one guy didn't really rush. He was kind
of spying Jade and Daniels. It's his job, right, it's
his job. You want Jane Daniels to run. His job

(31:34):
was supposed to be the late insert. Okay, so three
guys rush, the fourth guy is supposed to come late.
Wherever the opening is, wherever Daniel and come and collision
Daniels one, he's about to throw it.

Speaker 5 (31:46):
He didn't do that, He just like stood there. But
my bigger issue.

Speaker 9 (31:50):
Is if you rush five, Daniels does not have that
much time. Whatever value you're getting in dropping seven, I
promise you're better off dropping.

Speaker 5 (32:03):
Six if we all know it to Hail Mary.

Speaker 9 (32:06):
Having a fifth guy, Rush Daniels, never even then has
the time to get the.

Speaker 5 (32:10):
Ball off down the field in that situation.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
Ross Tucker Ross Tucker Football Podcast. Which team doesn't have
a chance for the postseason? Jets, Bengals, Cowboys.

Speaker 9 (32:25):
The Jets. Yeah, the Jets are done. I don't care
about their schedule moving forward. And this is going to
be one of the more interesting teardowns that we've ever seen.
I mean, then they're going to be playing the second
half of the year where they're basically playing out the
string with a first BALLT Hall of Fame quarterback, maybe

(32:49):
a first BALLT Hall of Fame receiver.

Speaker 5 (32:51):
This doesn't happen very often. It's gonna get real, real
awkward in New York really soon. Yes, theoretically, they could
go eight to one in.

Speaker 9 (33:03):
Their last nine games and go tenants to have to
make the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (33:06):
That's not happening. They're not doing I mean, to lose
that game.

Speaker 9 (33:11):
This has got to be and this is saying a
lot for Jets fans. This has to be the most
disappointing year to ever be a Jets fan. I can
still see you know, the Bengals and the Cowboys at
least have three wins. The Jets only have two, and
I can see a picture to them winning ten and

(33:33):
maybe getting in. For the Jets, it's just gonna get crazy, ugly.
There's no more moves to be made. It's gonna be
entertaining for some people, that's for.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
Sure, Okay, but then you're entertaining bringing Rogers back for
one more year to run it back.

Speaker 3 (33:50):
One more time.

Speaker 5 (33:53):
I don't think so.

Speaker 2 (33:55):
No, for what because if I'm a coach, I don't
want this job. If I have Aaron Rodgers for one
year coming off this year, how are you going to
track somebody where they go, Hey, this will be great
for They're gonna do one one more year, maybe with Aaron,
and then it's a rebuild or maybe it's a rebuild
at the end of this season, because you're right now

(34:17):
they have the fourth pick in the draft.

Speaker 9 (34:20):
Yeah, I think I think they probably cut bait and
move on because this is also dan the last year
of the contract for Joe Douglas, their general manager.

Speaker 5 (34:31):
So you're gonna get a new head coach and a
new GM and you're.

Speaker 9 (34:37):
Gonna saddle them with a forty something year old quarterback
that isn't.

Speaker 5 (34:43):
What he used to be, that looks old as.

Speaker 9 (34:47):
A player and wants to be in charge of This
was his year to be in charge. This was his
year to be the one dictating things. You cannot do that.
If you're the Jets, I think they're all gone. I
think it's a new head coach, a new GM. They
draft their own quarterback. They probably try to get Shador Sanders.

(35:09):
I'd be very curious to see how Dion feels about that.
And look, there's a lot of things about that that
he would like. The New York part of it, there's
a lot to like there. But Dion probably wants to
handpick the head coach in GM. This is I mean,
just knowing the Jets organization a little bit. Maybe maybe
with Dion, he tells Carolina some of their teams. He

(35:31):
doesn't want Shador to go there, and maybe he dictates
who the head coach and GM are of the Jets.

Speaker 5 (35:38):
Maybe Dion's the head coach.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
I was gonna say, I I don't I'm not a
hot take guy.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
If you're the Jets, would you entertain let's say you
have the opportunity to draft his son because you got
to get both of them. You can't hire Dion and
then you don't get his son. And I'm gonna assume
you're gonna have a head coach before the draft. But
is that crazy to think d On coaching in the
NFL coaching his son.

Speaker 5 (36:04):
I don't think it's crazy.

Speaker 9 (36:05):
You think Dion coaching in the NFL or coaching his son.

Speaker 5 (36:10):
I don't think it is what, uh, the elite.

Speaker 9 (36:14):
Organizations, the good organizations in the NFL would.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
Do, so that means the Jets can do it.

Speaker 5 (36:20):
It sounds a lot like something that Jets would do.

Speaker 9 (36:23):
And look, Jets fan, Jets fans think, I don't hate
Jets fans like I love Jets fan.

Speaker 5 (36:28):
You guys are so loyal with getting so overgar.

Speaker 9 (36:31):
But let's be honest, Like when you look at the
Jets Underwoody Johnson, that's the type of move they would make.
They kind of like the flash, They like the splash,
they like being talked about, they like the excitement. I
think they would like the idea of having Deon Sanders'
coach in Shador Sanders' quarterback. And by the way, on

(36:54):
some level, Dan in terms of like hope and turning
the page. That would be a heck of a way
to turn the page. From mearon Rodgers error.

Speaker 3 (37:03):
Great to talk to you, Somers, Thank you, Rob Boys.

Speaker 5 (37:05):
Thanks there.

Speaker 1 (37:06):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio WAPP.

Speaker 2 (37:17):
He's Paul Finebaum, host of The Paul Finebaum Show, Voice
of the SCC, joining us on the program. All right,
let's put this to bed. A and M big win
against LSU. Mike Elko, the head coach at A and M,
after the game, has some things to say. I don't
know if a reporter said, coach, who were you talking about?

(37:37):
But let's play it and then you can tell us
who you think Mike Elko is taking a shot at.

Speaker 5 (37:43):
We're very honest, we're very open. And this is a
real program.

Speaker 7 (37:47):
It's not fake.

Speaker 9 (37:49):
It's not a politician running this program talking fast and
bs and everybody.

Speaker 5 (37:53):
This is a real program.

Speaker 7 (37:55):
And for all the recruits out there, this is a
real place and if you want to be really good
at football, a good place to be.

Speaker 3 (38:01):
Who are the candidates Paul that he could be talking about.

Speaker 7 (38:05):
Well, first of all, you don't have to be a
PhD from the Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting to know
the answer to this, So I'll eliminate the candidates in
name only one. He is referring to one Jimbo Fisher,
one of the biggest bs ers in the history of
college football and not a very good politician at that,

(38:25):
and a man who walked away a year ago next
week with thinking seventy seven million dollars not to coach
this team that Mike Elko is coaching exquisitely. So didn't
mean to give you such a long answer to an
easy question.

Speaker 2 (38:41):
Yeah, we didn't know if he was taken a shot
at Brian Kelly because he coached with Brian for a
year at Notre Dame. I didn't know if he was
taking a shot at Dion Sanders. So thank you for
clearing that up. The number of teams that are playoff worthy,
the number of teams that are in contention to win
it all, how big a disparity do you have with that?

Speaker 7 (39:04):
Yeah, I mean I think there's something like twenty nine
schools right now competing for twelve birth. It gets a
little complex because of the naturally convoluted system that the
CFP has. We're not identifying the twelve best, we're figuring
out conference champions. But I think we're about to get
into the point of the schedule. We're getting playoff eliminators.

(39:27):
Like Saturday, Missouri went away. They only have two losses,
but they're not coming back. I mean they've lost I
think seventy five to ten and their two biggest games
this year and they have their biggest win is Boston College.
So the next big one comes in twelve days with
the aforementioned Brian Kelly, you have Alabama and Lshoe. This

(39:47):
is a loser is done, the winner stays alive, and
very likely we'll get in. So we're going to see
a series of games like this. I mean, everything is
not equal, but just within the big ten of the SEC,
there are more. I mean, nobody had Indiana, nobody looked
at Pittsburgh from the ACC, and quite frankly, nobody had Texas,

(40:12):
A and M in the SEC.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
I know, when we went to the twelve team playoff,
I had a lot of pushback and I was probably
in the minority. I said, this makes the regular season
more relevant. More teams have hope. All you know, all
you want to do is get into the big dance
in March madness.

Speaker 3 (40:28):
That's it.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
You just want to be able to say we're in.
You know, we got past the velvet ropes and we
got in. And I think having games that mean something
in November is something that we have missed here. Where
do you stand with where we are with twelve? And
how long does it take to get to twenty four?

Speaker 7 (40:48):
It will keep growing. Just let me refer you to
the NCAA Basketball Tournament. It was thirty two and now
it's how they're trying to get ninety six. It makes
too much sense. We used to spend November figuring out
bad conference divisional matchups, which you know, in the Big
Ten and the SEC were always one sided because there

(41:11):
was one dominant. Now it is. It is fascinating, and
I think we're in for a really extraordinary month. And
I'm not sitting here at a height machine for SEC
on ABC. It's doing quite well, by the way, But
every conference is going to have these games, and you know,
especially when there is literally a playoff berth on the line.

(41:34):
It's an old saying, Dan, but I mean we are
College football is now entering that NFL phase where even
the conference championship games won't determine a playoff then, but
they will determine who has a buy and maybe home
field advantage that matters, as you well know, all.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
Right, I know it's been a few weeks. It's hard
to keep track of where you stand on Dion Sanders.

Speaker 7 (41:59):
I can't remember.

Speaker 2 (42:01):
It's not the toughest schedule, but you know, you don't
get style points.

Speaker 3 (42:06):
You just win.

Speaker 2 (42:07):
And with Travis being out for a while or being
banged up, and you know, Shardoor Sanders is playing well
and maybe the you know, a Heisman winner, But how
good is Colorado?

Speaker 7 (42:18):
They're a lot better than the last time I was here, man,
when we were both lamenting. Can they just win a
couple of four games? It has been remarkable to watch
and maybe we shouldn't have been surprised when when you
have two of the three or four best players in
the country. But they're not beating what I would call
high quality teams. But they are winning, and they'll get

(42:41):
a couple of opportunities. I mean, I think that what
they need. I mean, they're at a bowl game, which
is great, but now I mean they've got a very
narrow path to the Big Twelve Championship. I wouldn't I
wouldn't put my stamp on it right now. But the
fact that it's almost November and there's still a relevant
conversation piece as opposed to what they were last year

(43:01):
a freak show, I think is very significant. And you know,
I know one of my colleagues and one of your
former colleagues has been clapping for Dion to a national
Coach of the Year. I think Mike Elko might be
a slightly better choice right now, or a number of
other coaches like Kurt Signetti at Indiana. But I do

(43:22):
think that Dion has quieted everyone, including me. I mean,
I've been in traction for three weeks trying to pat
myself on the back or flip flop from all the
different takes. But that's the damn that's sports, Okay, I mean,
why I apologize, just come up with a new tape.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
He's Paul Finbaum, host of the Paul Finbaum Show. Well,
that leads me into where do you stand with Lincoln
Riley and USC. It's been a while since we talked
about that situation.

Speaker 7 (43:48):
Yeah, very little has changed there. He's still a fraud
as an elite major college coach. He's had one or
two decent wins, including the LSU game, but there's just
been too many drop games at at nowhere sits in
the Big Ten for me to believe in him. I

(44:09):
think it won't be this year because there's too much
invested in him. But I think anyone with twenty one
hundred vision or below can see that he's not going
to last very long as the SC head coach.

Speaker 2 (44:22):
We're seeing something that's now becoming there's enough of a
sample size of teams crossing a couple of time zones here,
especially going out to the West Coast, than the success
rate or lack thereof. This is something that is going
to be there for the Big Ten. If you're like,
how do you think coaches can better prepare for the

(44:44):
traveling part of this in this conference.

Speaker 7 (44:47):
Well, I'm sure they'll be talking to all the experts
in the offseason about bio rhythms DAN, but ultimately they
just have to get out there a day early and
become acclimated. It's not unusual. We see it in the NFL,
we see it in every sport. I think it's doable,
although we haven't seen many of them done. Have to

(45:08):
do a better job of scheduling too. I don't know
if you stay out there for two weeks, which seems
like it might make sense. But then again, the quote
unquote student athletes which would be missing valuable class time,
wouldn't they.

Speaker 3 (45:20):
Yes, they would be, Yes, they would be.

Speaker 2 (45:22):
I can't remember a season where I didn't think we
had a front runner for the Heisman, and I didn't
think we had a front runner for being the best
team in the country.

Speaker 3 (45:32):
Can can you?

Speaker 2 (45:33):
And it might be a good thing, Paul, But can
you remember when we had sort of I'm not quite
sure who's who and what's what.

Speaker 7 (45:42):
No, it's hard of Heisman. I mean we usually declare
that in July and then readjust and I think I
think Travis Hunters is the X factor there. If he's
healthy and he's playing in semi significant games, I think
he's going to be the last man standing. All these
other guys are great.

Speaker 9 (45:59):
But.

Speaker 7 (46:01):
He's the biggest name. As far as the best team know,
there really isn't one. We've had four number ones already.
I believe I'm moving back towards Georgia, even though I
got off their bandwagon quickly like every other bandwagon I've
gotten off of this year, but I think I'm back
on there now. Just by the way, when you get
off a bandwagon, never give up your by your seat,

(46:24):
don't give it away, because there's always time to get
back on. I've learned that working at ESPN, Dan.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
What's the fan base that has a real problem with
you more than any other one.

Speaker 7 (46:35):
It was Michigan last year under Harball because that story
was for three years, and I mean they were fairly belligerent.
It comes and goes. I mean within the sec let's
either sixteen. Give me a minute on that. I'll come
up with a long list, But I have the one

(46:55):
I've been around the longest is Alabama, and they can
be very difficult. But the one thing I'll say about Alabama,
I was there over the weekend in Tuscaloosa. That fan
base was was on the verge of a revolt with
Klin de Bor. But it just took a thirty four
to nothing went over a Hapalis Missouri team with no

(47:15):
quarterback for them to now be back in dust it
and winning at all. That's how quickly it changes.

Speaker 2 (47:20):
Yeah, I don't you know cover this sport the way
you do obviously, but like I have Tennessee fans mad
because I, you know, reported that they were paying recruits
in fast food bags years ago, and I wasn't doing it.
I just broke the news that a coach who was
involved in it told me that that's how they were

(47:42):
paying recruits.

Speaker 3 (47:44):
Come onto the campus.

Speaker 2 (47:45):
Here's money in a bag of McDonald's bag or of
you know whatever, Wendy's.

Speaker 7 (47:52):
I was in. I was in Knoxville a week ago, Dan,
and you're right, they're still.

Speaker 3 (47:55):
Mad at.

Speaker 6 (48:00):
Just.

Speaker 7 (48:00):
Way to get a college football fan mad at you
is not to pick their team, which is one reason
when I used to work in Birmingham the year after
saving got there, I picked Alabama literally from two thousand
and eight until until two years ago in Knoxville when
they beat When Tennessee beat them, I mean that's a lifetime.

(48:20):
I never went against them, and people say, well, that's crazy,
you're being a homer. You know what, I didn't miss
very many times. I think I missed about eight times
in the seventeen years.

Speaker 3 (48:29):
Yeah, good to talk to you.

Speaker 2 (48:32):
Stay on those or stay off those bandwagons, whatever.

Speaker 3 (48:34):
It is. Good to talk to you.

Speaker 7 (48:37):
Thank you, Dan,
