Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Nick's over the Celtics three to one. Jason Tatum with
an injury. No update on that. He'll probably be having
an MRI this morning, but they might have to wait
until the swelling goes down, whether it's an ankle or
an achilles. The Timberwolves up three to one on the Warriors,
and the Dallas Mavericks win the NBA Draft Lottery, followed
(00:26):
by the Spurs, seventy six ers and the Hornets. It's
one of those moments where you're watching and you're watching it.
It almost slowed down. I'm watching, I'm going, oh my goodness,
So Utah's out and Washington's out. New Orleans is out.
(00:47):
I'm going, uh okay, and let's go to break and
then they come back. I go, I'll be damn. Dallas
is gonna win the NBA Draft Lottery. And we gave
you a heads up yesterday. Here is Fritzy on the show.
All right, Todd, you are going to manipulate the draft lottery.
What is in the best interest of the NBA.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
My initial thought was from Durham to Charlotte. The Cooper
stays in North Carolina and the Hornets get the pick.
But I'm actually going to go with the Mavericks. After
the fans got blind sided by that Lucra deal, I'd
like to see Flag go to the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Right, Okay, you kind of picked two there, but you did,
you know, I guess finally focus on the Dallas Mavericks.
So I'm going to give you credit. In fact, I
text that to the dan Etch. I said, Fritzy got
it right ish and Dallas gets their man. But you
know there's gonna be people who say conspiracy theory or
why would you, you know, do something go out of
(01:44):
your way to help the Dallas Mavericks. As our good
buddy Vincent Goodwill says, I've watched the lottery, picked up
the ping pong balls myself to see how they are weighed,
et cetera. Not only is draft rigging in that way
really hard to do, it's also a federal crime. We
don't want to, you know, have something like that to
(02:06):
get in the way of our conspiracy theories. But when
you do think about it, there are times when you
go things that make you go hmmm. So Patrick Ewing
going to the Knicks Dereck Rose going to the Bulls
should get a little more emphasis here, because they had
like a one point eight percent chance to get him,
and he goes to his hometown. Lebron goes to his hometown.
(02:28):
The Dallas Mavericks don't deserve this. But then they get
Cooper Flag and I'm thinking Cooper Flagg is there for
the lottery, and he's got to be thinking, oh, please
not Washington, Please not Washington. No offense to Washington, d see,
of course, but you know he goes to Dallas, and
you do have some veterans there. I think that will help.
(02:50):
I don't think the focus will necessarily be on just him.
You get Ad, you get Kyrie. You know, they got
some younger, big men too, and I think he might
be able to ease in a little bit better with
a place like Dallas as opposed to Utah where he'd
be singled out, and certainly with Washington DC. But the
Mavericks win the lottery and let the conspiracy theories resume.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Yes, Paula, they were immediate yesterday, whether online or just
walking into people outside my house. People are like, oh,
this is classic NBA. They convince the Mavericks to quietly
trade Luca to the Lakers and do them a solid
on the back end. And I mean these were grown men.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
While I knew, yes, the conspiracy theories were so prevalent
that we actually did it on our show yesterday with
that clip. You just say, if we were to manipulate
the draft, where would we put That's how far ahead
everybody was on Let's so let's see how they rig this.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, And I didn't even think, but there I saw
some of the threads that said, oh, I see what
the NBA did. You know, the Mavericks did the Lakers
as solid, gave them their future with Luca. Well, we
got to do something nice for them. We're gonna give
them Cooper flag. Also, the speculation on where Yanis is
going to go. He just said he would be open
(04:09):
to a trade. He'd be open to it. Now that's
a polite way of saying, you can trade me, or
we're going to trade me. I'll decide where I want
to go. But you know, hopefully it'll benefit you guys,
because the window is closed. You know, Dame time is over.
That clock stopped now with Yannis at thirty. And there
(04:31):
were a lot of analysts who you know, they had
trade scenarios for the Bucks in the San Antonio Spurs,
and I was like, why san Antonio for Yannis? If
I'm san Antonio and I have dearon Fox Stefan Cassel
was the rookie of the year. I got Victor Wimben Yama.
I just build it, just add a little bit more.
(04:51):
You're gonna need another veteran. You're gonna need somebody who's
probably in their late twenties, early thirties, and then you
know that'll be a steadying force that you're going to have.
I said from the time that they drafted ween Ban Yama,
just get a point guard. Well, they have a couple
of them that will, you know, help his growth. But
they have the second pick in the draft, and Ace
(05:12):
Bailey might be the guy. Ron Harper's son might be
the guy. And I did watch a little bit. I
watched more Rutgers basketball than I should have. And these guys,
while they're great, they didn't even make the tournament. They
have potential. Potential means that you haven't done anything. And
(05:33):
I think that's the scary part of Okay, you can
add them, is that really going to change your fortunes?
And san Antonio has two draft picks, I think the
second and the fourteenth. You know, maybe you can pair
that together, maybe you can put together a package, maybe
you could get some pieces there. But I think san Antonio,
you know, quietly did well last night. And you know,
(05:56):
we go back to the teams that lost, the teams
that had fourteen percent chance. You know, is the lottery fair? Well?
Is tanking fair? You know, that's the problem I have
that you had teams that tried not to win. Maybe
they weren't trying to lose as much as they were
trying not to win. I know it's semantics here, but
(06:18):
you know, we've gone through a lot of iterations of
the NBA draft lottery, and I don't know what is
considered fair. But is this five consecutive years that team
with the worst record didn't get the number one pick
in the lottery in the draft. But I don't know
what the probability of that is, of the worst team
(06:38):
is not getting the number one pick.
Speaker 6 (06:41):
In the draft.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
All right, we'll come up with the poll question. Obviously,
with the Knick situation, Jason Tatum, we don't know the
severity and look, can we speculate on how he reacted
to the injury look more of an achilles than an
ankle or even a knee, but even the pain reaction,
And I don't know if it's the pain of I
(07:04):
know I'm not going to be able to help my team,
or the actual pain of the injury. Because I've been
around people I've mentioned this before, played hoops with a
guy who blew out both achilles on the same right
at the same moment, and he was in tremendous pain.
But then I see Aaron Rodgers or Kevin Durant or
Kobe Now everybody reacts differently to this, but my reaction
(07:26):
when I saw it was that looked like in achilles.
Now Boston can still win this series. Like, you got
to approach this as they're going to be dangerous, and
sometimes you're more dangerous because you know what Derek White's
going to say, I'll take up the shooting slack Peyton Pritchard.
(07:47):
Maybe Porzingis plays a big game. Drew Holliday, We're waiting
for him. Like they have a deep team and you
probably have six guys who can get you twenty five
points on any given night. But I if I'm a
Knicks fan, wouldn't look at this and say we're going
to the Eastern Conference Finals because Boston is a great team,
(08:07):
and but you know, we're going to remember these playoffs
for injuries because you have Steph Curry out that's affected
that series. Jason Tatum perhaps out look at all the
injuries with the Cleveland Cavaliers. I mean, yes, this does
hurt the defending champs. I don't think anybody's sympathetic about
the Cavaliers, and they had more injuries than Boston does,
and they had the best record in the East. But
(08:29):
I hate seeing Jason Tatum, who was having an incredible game,
going toe to toe with Jalen Brunson. But Boston can
still win this series. And I think sometimes when that
star is out, you you ease up a little bit here,
and if you're the Knicks, you you cannot you cannot
(08:51):
go in over confident. You know, you have to go
after him and you have to take them out because
if you don't, they're they're gonna have some confidence here.
And we've seen this so many times. Star player goes out,
everybody rallies. Now, the question is how long can you
rally for? It's like Golden State, I thought Golden State
was going to win, not last night, the previous game,
(09:14):
and I said, if they don't win that game, then
they're not winning this series. And I don't think Steph
Curry's coming back. But last night they got roughed up,
and it looks like, you know, that series is going
to end. Maybe one more game, but we're going to
look back on these playoffs and probably single out. The
one thing is injuries changed the entire landscape here of
(09:38):
who's going to win the title, who's going to play
for the title. Oklahoma City's been healthy. You know, they
got Chad Holmgren back. They've been healthy for the most part.
Denver I think is just tired. I think Joker is tired.
Now that's not an excuse, but you can watch somebody
be tired. And Okac, he's done a lot. They've done
a really good job there. And yes, if I talked
(09:59):
about great players stepping up, yes, and Joker had better
step up. Jimmy Butler didn't step up. Now this is playoff. Jimmy,
you know I can't sit there and go, oh, I'm
going to count on Buddy Healed. I shouldn't be counting
on Buddy Healed. I should be counting on Jimmy Butler,
but Golden State they're wounded and they're not going to
(10:20):
go much further than this Seaton. What's poll question today?
Speaker 5 (10:24):
Well, I mean we can start right there with the
draft lottery, I think, oh right, all right, right, Actually
we have a bunch here from the t dub too.
I don't know if you really want to get into
that this early Tuesday. Fritzie is a new brand of Todd.
How about Fritzi's after the break?
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Because that usually sends us in a direction where it's
kind of hard for me to get back on the road.
Do you have this is true? Yeah, this is true. Yeah,
I mean I've seen some of the samples here of
questions that Todd has had. By the way, I already
have NBA title odds for next year. How does that happen?
DraftKings just sent me the odds for winning the NBA
(11:08):
title next year. Okay, I'll have those for you coming up.
Speaker 5 (11:12):
Somebody on social media submitted if Nico Harrison presented Anthony
Davis and Cooper flag for Luka doncik.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
What'd you do? Oh my god, that's funny. That's essentially yes, yes, yeah,
that's tough. Yeah, damn Thikes.
Speaker 5 (11:28):
And you're like to the end of the season, is hey,
So if we could all just try a little harder,
maybe work on getting back in shape, that'd be cool.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Here's something to consider. And I don't know if many
people have singled this out and that there was a
play in game between Dallas and Memphis. This is in April.
Memphis beat Dallas like one twenty to one, oho six
knock Dallas out, Dallas goes into the lottery. Also, I
(12:01):
believe there was a coin flip the Bulls and the Mavericks,
and the Mavericks won the coin toss and their percentage
was one point eight I believe, and the Bulls one
point seven percent.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
That's right, Dan, The Mavericks based off a coin flip
with the Bulls were in the eleven spot, the Bulls
were in the twelve spot. So two different breaks had
to happen for the Mavericks to get this.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Things that make you go hmmm, just like a meaningless
game against Memphis and you're like, Okay, Dallas a bunch
of injuries, they lost and now they're out, and you
went a coin toss to improve your odds now granted
one point eight to one point seven, but who knows.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
Yes, Paul, that's what's bothering people as well. Beyond conspiracy,
it's like, do the Mavericks deserve this good luck after
how maybe questionable it was with the Luca trade. No,
that's what bothers a lot of people.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Yeah, they don't deserve this. Oh but how is Nico
Harrison being like he had nothing to do with this,
but he's going to benefit from this as the GM
of the Mavericks.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
Yes, Steven, right, and given the track record, right, I'm
not I wouldn't be shocked if they traded out of
that pick.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Or or they take like Dylan Harper or Ace Bailey.
We re looked at it and I would not be surprised.
You know, we didn't want another white superstar here. You
know we're gonna trade. You know, we got Ace Bailey here.
We got everything we need.
Speaker 7 (13:34):
Yes, he was Cooper flog with the umlat there was
a Homburg flog. Hey, they got their Dirk Navitzko love him,
love dark issues in he looks like me.

Also you can see him on First Take with Steven A.
Speaker 6 (15:14):
Smith.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Are you a conspiracy theorist when it comes to sports?
Speaker 9 (15:18):
Well, you're talking about the Mavericks. I mean it is
a little crazy.
Speaker 10 (15:21):
I mean a one point eight percent chance to get
the lottery and uh to win the lottery and they
get it. Uh, you know, I understand they're so worried
about tanking, But Danny, isn't there something wrong when Utah,
Washington and Charlotte can't win the freaking lottery or don't
have a chance to get the top three picks.
Speaker 9 (15:39):
Isn't that? Isn't that wrong in sports?
Speaker 10 (15:41):
And I understand they're worried about these teams at twenty
games to go not caring, which is an indictment in itself,
But isn't that isn't it time maybe we pass on
the lottery and give those worst teams the best chance
to get the one pick. Why don't we just do
the lottery with the three or four verse records not
include Dallas or Houston.
Speaker 9 (16:03):
But that was a trade.
Speaker 10 (16:03):
But you know what I'm saying, to give the worst
teams the chance to get I mean really, I mean
that is a little rough. And last year, obviously Atlanta
won the lottery, they had a three percent chance to win.
So and you know, it all starts with Ewing and
eighty five with Stern. It was a TV show at first.
Speaker 9 (16:21):
They get a little TV juice. But you know, am
I a conspiracy theory a theorist?
Speaker 6 (16:26):
No?
Speaker 9 (16:27):
But I think you and I both agreed. It doesn't
look good for the NBA that the Mavericks win the
lottery after they trade Luca.
Speaker 10 (16:34):
You know, my here's what my twenty one year old said, Dad,
somebody must have told Ego Harrison, do us a favorite,
get Boca to a big market, and we'll figure out
a way for you to.
Speaker 9 (16:43):
Get the number one week in a draft. I mean,
that's what it leads to. That's what it leads to.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Yeah, you start to look at it, you go, Okay.
Lebron went to his hometown. Derreck Rose went to his
hometown Ewing goes to the Knicks. Everything that was attached
to that were you were you on the air in
eighty five, not in New York.
Speaker 9 (17:04):
I was in Orlando. I don't remember.
Speaker 10 (17:07):
Everybody remember it's a great picture of the busher who
was all excited and ewing, and you know, there was
a lot of people who thought that was rigged. You
and I, you know, are good sports fans. We don't
think it's rigged, but it doesn't look good. And I again, Utah,
Washington and Charlotte earned it. They deserve to have the
top three to four picks in a draft.
Speaker 9 (17:27):
They have it. I mean, what did Utah get the
sixth pick, fifth pick? Charlotte got the sixth seventh pick.
And there's only four or five guys who make a
big difference anyway.
Speaker 10 (17:36):
Flag is one of them, and he ends up going
to the team that doesn't really need him, you know, with.
Speaker 9 (17:41):
Kyrie and with the front court and of course Anthony Davis.
Speaker 10 (17:44):
It looks bad for the NBA and the idea that
we got to make sure we put a lot are
in so the San Antonio Spurs don't tank, which what
they did to get Duncan is really an indictment on
the whole sport. Isn't the idea of trying to go
out there whenever game that you play, it's an indictment
in the whole sport.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
How about that instead of a final four, you have
the bottom four, and you have the bottom four teams
played for the right to have the number one pick.
I have to incentivize some of these teams, because Mark
Cuban got fined six hundred thousand dollars when he was
on our show a couple of years ago by saying
that basically it was a front office tanking that they
were guilty of. So that's where you know, the players
(18:25):
who are playing are going to play hard. You just
don't put the best players out there correct play hard.
Is there a way to incentivize teams? Let's say once
you get eliminated, the number of wins you have after
you get eliminated will create the order, the draft order.
Speaker 10 (18:40):
And that's a good point something like that, you know,
to avoid these teams just you know, basically throwing up
their hands in the last ten, twelve, thirteen games of
the year.
Speaker 9 (18:48):
Yeah, you would think there's an.
Speaker 10 (18:51):
Element of it that they can do something, and it's
a TV show.
Speaker 9 (18:55):
They like the drama, they like the cards up.
Speaker 10 (18:58):
It's a TV show, and the NBA should eliminate the
idea that they're going to have a TV show to
determine who goes out there and gets the number and
gets the card flipped.
Speaker 9 (19:08):
I mean it really is it?
Speaker 10 (19:09):
I mean Dallas wins the lottery, I mean san Antonio
gets the second pick. I mean really, I mean, come,
why don't we just get the Spurs six players? For
crying out loud, it looks very bad.
Speaker 9 (19:21):
For the NBA.
Speaker 10 (19:22):
I don't know, and I don't believe it is a conspiracy.
I'm with you, but it looks such a perception is awful.
And if I got a twenty three year old who's
a good NBA fan and a good sports fan, if
he says that to me at nine o'clock last night,
that's a problem.
Speaker 9 (19:37):
That is a problem.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Christopher mad Dog Russo hosts a mad Dog Unleashed and
you can also see him on First Take You See
Every Wednesday with Steven A. Smith. I likened this spotlight
to vitamin D. You know some of us, you know,
getting out and getting sunshine. The spotlight is vitamin D.
To Jalen Brunson. He seems to just he absorbs it.
(19:59):
And you know, once again, when you you're around him,
you stand next to him like you're going that guy
is going off for you know. This is his what's
seventeenth time he's had thirty or more points in a
playoff game.
Speaker 9 (20:11):
Man, He's not a tremendous shock.
Speaker 10 (20:12):
He kept the minute last night, he had that great
third quarter with the eighteen points.
Speaker 9 (20:15):
And I just heard you there a little while ago
with Tatum. I mean, it's a.
Speaker 10 (20:20):
Horrific probably a bad injury. I don't think they've announced
anything yet, and I hate to see we all hate
to see it.
Speaker 9 (20:26):
He's a great player. But the Knicks are going to
win that.
Speaker 10 (20:29):
I don't want to hear if Celtic fans say, well,
we could have known the game was over. I mean
it was one thirteen to one oh four when he
got hurt. The Knicks won that game in the third
quarter they got offense. But Brunson has been incredible. You're
one hundred percent right. I mean, nobody saw this. I
say one thing that's interesting. If you go back to
that Dallas Utah series when he was a Maverick in
(20:50):
the first half of it, about what it was a
four or five years ago he played Luca was out. Yeah,
he played really well in that series. Obviously, Leon rose
short and then with Luca came back in the second
half of the series and they beat the Star beat
the Jazz in six games. But Brunson in the first
half of that series did an incredible job. I've heard
(21:11):
he's a great guy. I mean, it seems like he's
even like the commercially does like the way he handles
it with Defangenzo. I mean, listen last night, he was great.
He gets to his spots. I am shocked. I thought
after the Celtics won Game three they were going to
figure out a way to get back and win this series.
I you know, I'm not shocked about Cleveland. I thought
Cleveland was a paper tiger. I thought they were a
(21:33):
regular season team. I think Indiana's very underrated. That series
isn't over yet, but I'm not shocked they're up three
to one. I think we're all shocked at the Knicks
are up three to one and now they're going to Obviously,
you know, he's not gonna play, so they're gonna figure
out a way to win that series, you know, and
I said yesterday on my show there, Dan, I guess
I was long. I thought there were six teams that
had a chance to win a championship.
Speaker 9 (21:54):
It was wide open. I have not been that impressed
with Oklahoma City.
Speaker 10 (21:58):
I am not that impressed with Dead You know, the
Celtics have been vulnerable and the two teams I said,
I don't think they can win a championship for the
Warriors and the Knicks.
Speaker 9 (22:08):
Maybe I got a wrong.
Speaker 10 (22:09):
Maybe the Knicks will win the NBA title after all
is said and done, because they got four guys yesterday
who all scored, and they they steamrolled.
Speaker 9 (22:17):
They threw the they threw.
Speaker 10 (22:18):
These, to quote Lupica, they threw the Celtics on a
flat of stairs in that third quarter yesterday. They killed
them in that third quarter, and that's the quarter of
the Celtics usual.
Speaker 9 (22:27):
He went, so good for them. I'm bunting as tremendous
as you said, very He's not underrated anymore. He was
underrated coming to the Knicks.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
I got roughed up by a couple of former NBA
players on social media. I talked about Jason Tatum being
a great player, but not a star. You know that
they're certain there's only a couple of players. And I mean,
I liken this too. You know, Tom Cruise is not
necessarily a great actor as much as he is a star. Yeah,
I agree. Bradley Cooper is a star, uh, you know,
(23:00):
and a great actor. And then I likened it to
Trey Young. He's got star power. Luca has star power,
Steph Curry has star power. There's only a couple of
players like SGA has no star power. He's an unbelievable player,
is going to be the MVP, but he doesn't. People
aren't going, hey, when's SGA playing? If Steph Curry's playing.
(23:23):
Younger kids love Trey Young. Luca's got star power. But
I caught some flat Greg Anthony's going to join us.
He was like, how can you say that he's not
a star? He's first team All NBA five times, which
is true. He is a great player, but having star
power you go out to see the Celtics, Yeah, you're
not necessarily going to see him. And I didn't it
(23:46):
came off as a slight. I didn't mean it that way.
I'm just letting people know there's only a couple of
players that you go, I'm coming out to see you,
and he wasn't on that short list. I don't even
know if Joker's on that list, Chris, because.
Speaker 10 (24:00):
I don't think Kawhi Leonard is either. You know, he's
a great player. You think people are flocking to get
buy tickets. First off, he never plays, but you think
people are flocking.
Speaker 9 (24:09):
Giannis is a star.
Speaker 10 (24:10):
I mean the way he plays, he would be on
that list that you mentioned. I know where you're coming from, though,
I can see your point. He's a great, great player.
The ball sticks to him sometimes, you know, the ball
has a tendency to stick to him a little too
much to me, But you know, I generally understand where
you're coming from. I think you are probably one hundred
(24:30):
percent right. I don't like Trey Young. To me, he
keeps both teams in the game. I mean, I think
his shot selection. I'm not a big fan.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
He's a better player than Jason Tato. I'm saying he's
got star peck. Young kids love Trey Young. I agree,
they do tune in.
Speaker 10 (24:47):
But I think they overrate Trey Young because he does
have star power.
Speaker 9 (24:51):
I don't think he's a great player.
Speaker 10 (24:52):
I think he's got that little panache, which because he
shoots forty footers. He's he's small, he's flashy. But I
know where you're coming from. I think there is something
where with Tatum. You watch the franchise more than you
go watch the individual player. You know, I don't know
if people in Oklahoma City are buying tickets because Tatum's
coming to town, They're buying tickets because the Celtics are
(25:15):
coming to town. And that's probably what you meant. When
Giannis comes to town, they're buying tickets. You know, when
Curry comes to town, they're buying the tickets.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (25:25):
You know, Jo Kich, I think he's probably a star,
got star power because he's so unorthodox, you know.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
I can see that at the Why. I can see
there's that guy at the Why where you go Tim.
He scores, passes, rebound, does everything, and Luca's the best
or you'll Kisch is the best player in the game.
I'm just saying star power to come out and watch.
Anthony Edwards has more star power than Joker does in
(25:54):
my opinion, Like there's a I gotta go see that guy.
Speaker 10 (25:58):
And so the one thing I would disagree with you
on with that is Yokich is so unorthodox that he's
so unique.
Speaker 9 (26:06):
You know, big lumbering guy, can handle the ball, shoots threes,
great passer.
Speaker 10 (26:11):
There's an element of that just how is he doing this?
And so you go to the games for that reason.
But I do understand exactly what you're saying about Tatum.
If you're getting grief, you're they shouldn't be given your grief.
It's a sports opinion, and you're a thou. I can
understand that's where you're coming from. And again back to Brunson,
I mean it's incredible. Uh you know, he gets to
(26:34):
his sponse, he's you know, you would never think a
little bit of a guy, you know, you there. I
never thought he who thought he was going to be
this great coming out of college. I mean a little
bit like he's better, but a touch a little bit
like fred Van Fleet.
Speaker 9 (26:48):
I never thought he was going to be a good
NBA player. He's not because Brunson.
Speaker 10 (26:51):
But but you but you get the idea and and Sga,
I think you're right, he's great, but he doesn't have that.
And I'll tell right now, hopele Loue over ratedge. I
mean for a team that won sixty eight games. I
mean they were down twenty nine in game.
Speaker 9 (27:05):
Free to Memphis, and Memphis you know, had Moran out.
They're lucky that got through the game the other day.
Speaker 2 (27:10):
Again, you know this is gonna come back and bite you.
You know that that's what they're gonna win the title.
Speaker 9 (27:15):
You know, watch them win the title, and they very well.
And I haven't been impressed with Minnesota.
Speaker 10 (27:21):
I mean, I didn't see the second half last night
when they played great before. They've worked awfully hard to
beat Golden State, I mean, and they have no Curry
and they've worked awfully hard.
Speaker 9 (27:29):
I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 10 (27:31):
I mean, I'm not seeing the eighty six Celtics, let's
put it that way.
Speaker 9 (27:35):
Well, the eighty two, eighty three.
Speaker 10 (27:36):
Seventy six ers, or the sixty six seventy sixty seven
six Ers, or the seventy one seventy two Lakers. I
didn't see the sixty six seventies, you did, I didn't
the sixties sixty seven sixers, But I did see the
seventy one seventy two Lakers that were great sixty eight
and thirteen.
Speaker 9 (27:53):
I'm not seeing that kind of team right now so
far in the NBA playoffs.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Myself, if you're NBC, how do you use Michael Joe
Jordan on your NBA package?
Speaker 10 (28:04):
Well, you know, I don't think Michael's gonna be there
every Saturday or Sunday afternoon breaking down, you know, a
regular season game up against football.
Speaker 9 (28:13):
So I don't think he's gonna be there in that situation.
Speaker 10 (28:16):
To me, you know, I think it's a little pr
oriented because I got to see.
Speaker 9 (28:22):
How much Jordan's gonna work.
Speaker 10 (28:23):
You know, Jordan's gonna give up some of those golf
things and NBA playoffs. You know, somebody says, you know, Michael,
let's go play in Dubai. He's just says, no, I can't.
I got Sacramento in Dallas, a.
Speaker 9 (28:33):
Playing game NBC. He's not gonna do that.
Speaker 10 (28:37):
So I gotta see it to believe it. But you know,
it's a good PR move for NBC. I mean, he
won all those championships for the network. Who's not gonna
want to hear what Jordan has to say. But I
believe those appearances will be short in stature and brief.
I think it's more until it's proven otherwise, I think
(28:57):
it's more pr than anything else.
Speaker 9 (28:58):
I gotta see him what he want to do this.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Yeah, I'm wondering, and we joked about this, that is
it going to be Michael Jordan goes and lets some
of these players interview him, that you know, coming up
at halftime, Cooper Flagg interviews Michael Jordan, you know, an
audience with Michael Jordan where these players get to ask
him questions. But I other than that, unless they do
(29:22):
what Kobe did with his details, when he would break down,
truly break down a game or a player. I could
see that maybe with Mike doing something like that, but
I thought Kobe was wonderful as an analyst, you know,
with his own series there. Maybe they hadn't might see that.
Speaker 10 (29:41):
I mean, I don't see Jordan breaking down an individual
game and getting on a player for making a mistake.
Speaker 9 (29:46):
I don't see Jordan wanting to get into the weeds
of why so and so made an error. You know
why Hardens stinks and big games you know what she does.
Speaker 10 (29:56):
I don't know if I don't know if Jordan's gonna
want to do that to me that it's just NBC
trying to get a little uh juice with.
Speaker 9 (30:04):
Their with their NBA deal.
Speaker 10 (30:05):
Let's announce that we've hired Jordan for quote unquote a
special correspondent. They probably haven't even detailed what that might
entail because they you know, they just said, Jordan, what
you sign up and we'll figure it out later on,
you know that kind of thing. But I think people
will pay attention to it. It's you know, Jordan doesn't
talk much. You very rarely see him after that ape,
(30:28):
you know, that great documentary. So if am Matt standpoint,
we're here from them and we'll go from there.
Speaker 9 (30:34):
Listen.
Speaker 10 (30:34):
Uh, well, we're gonna have a little drama here, a
little drama with denverro Clama City. Let's see how Cleveland
responds Celtics without Tatum. Do they throw it the cashneer chips?
They go play with a lot of verve in Game
five down three to one, when it appears they can't
win that series. So I think you're gonna have a
little drama here. Can can Golden State win a game?
(30:55):
They get Curry active for Game six. I think you're
gonna have a little drama here in the next four
or five days. In the NBA, And going back to
the original thought, something's wrong with the idea that the
Dallas Mavericks speaking win the lottery after Atlanta one.
Speaker 9 (31:07):
So yeah, I'm with you one hundred percent on it.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
Good to talk to you, Chris.
Speaker 9 (31:11):
I love you, Danny.
Speaker 11 (31:11):
You keep up the good work, okay, Christopher mad Dog
Russo be sure to catch the live edition of The
Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Greg Anthony part of the broadcast team CABS Pacers Semifinal
series and uh he'll be there with the Jared Greenberg Spiroddish.
Game five tips off tonight Cleveland at seven Eastern on TNT,
True TV and Max. Good to see again, Greg. How
are you good morning?
Speaker 6 (31:44):
Dan? How are you man? A happy birthday? I here
is coming out. Yeah, you're gonna be fifty five? What's
going on?
Speaker 11 (31:51):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (31:51):
You know the Uh, the game is limited now. I'm
just a free throw in, not not free throw extended anymore.
But don't leave me open. Oh hit a free throw.
That's about.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
I love it all right?
Speaker 2 (32:04):
All right? So I had some things to say about
Jason Tatum, and we probably had ten minutes fifteen minutes
on the show we were talking about him, and then
you put out a tweet kind of asking me. How
could I come up with this or come to this
conclusion about Jason Tatum. I feel bad talking about him
where his season could be over. So I just want
(32:25):
to paraphrase something here. I think he's a first ballot
Hall of Famer. I think he's a great player. I
just don't think he's a star. Is the point that
I've been trying to make. Like Trey Young is a star,
Anthony Edwards a star, Luca is a star, Steph Curry's
a star. I'm talking about I'm going to go out
of my way to watch Shay Gilgis is not a star.
(32:46):
I think he's a great player and will be the MVP.
You can make a case Joker is not a star
that you tune in to watch him play. That was
the point that I've tried to make with Jason Tatum.
He's a first ballot Hall of Famer and a great,
great player. I just I think you tune in or
you would go out of your way to see the Celtics,
(33:07):
not Jason Tatum.
Speaker 12 (33:09):
That's a fair assessment from your perspective, because I do
think and ask if you're saying he's.
Speaker 6 (33:14):
Not box office no there and there have been a lot.
Speaker 12 (33:18):
Of the greatest players you've ever played who weren't box office.
So I listen, Tim Duncan was not box office. Yes,
fair right like, so we get that, and I don't
have an issue with that. And sometimes that's the difficult part,
often times with sound bites and tiddates, because I didn't
have the opportunity to kind of listen to your context,
and so from what I heard, I was like, Wow,
(33:39):
Now I would push back a little because I actually
do think Jason Tatum is a star. I do think
he's somewhat underappreciated, and I think part of it is
just the dynamic of the culture we live in is
that we've got to push.
Speaker 6 (33:53):
The envelope on all these guys.
Speaker 12 (33:56):
And then we're having this conversation after what just transfered
last night when he was having a monster game, although
they were probably still going to lose that game based
on how things are trending at the end, and you
just hate to see it happen to him because I
also think the irony of that is he's one of
the highest character guys we have in our league. He's
one of the most accountable guys we have in our league,
(34:19):
and he's been one of the most successful. I mean,
if you go look at perspective since he came into
the league, he's played at more conference finals, he's won
a championship, He's this will be his fourth consecutive first
Team All NBA. So I would tend to say I
think jokers a start. Like So that's just in a disagreement.
That's more the magics, right, that's not necessarily saying they're
(34:40):
not great players. But I again, as a basketball nut,
I would pay to see both them play. But then again,
you know, i'd go pay the C two lottery teams
play if I had to. I'm just a fan of
the game, So I could definitely appreciate where you're coming.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
From speaking of the lottery, Okay with it the format?
Speaker 12 (34:59):
Yeah, you know what, Dan, this is my philosophy on life.
No matter what we have in place, what the system is,
people are gonna complain because just like human beings, nobody's perfect.
Speaker 6 (35:13):
There is no such and we struggle with it all
the time.
Speaker 12 (35:15):
So I try to focus more on the end result
than just the minutia of the process, like too many
people want to because you can nitpick any process and
I'll give you a perfect example, let's look at the
national championship game we just had with the final four
in basketball, and then with the championship in the NCAA
(35:37):
for football.
Speaker 6 (35:38):
I was really happy with the end result.
Speaker 12 (35:40):
I thought the final four you had the four best teams, right,
you didn't have in the championship game. You had no
five star kids, you had no want and done kids.
The ratings were through the roof, and we'll instead of
us focusing on, man, we got ultimately what we wanted.
We want to get caught up in the drugs of
the process.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
There is no perfect process. How many remember you're old
enough to remember when there was thirty two teams in
the NCAA tournament. You're old enough.
Speaker 12 (36:08):
We're old enough to remember when you didn't have a
playoff for college football. And with each process that they
changed it, the complaints never diminished. We still that's what
we do in America. Man, we just want to complain.
It doesn't matter what the system is, how well is functioning.
So I look, I have no problem with it. It
creates excitement. I was against the play in when they
(36:30):
first introduced it. I think it was one of the
best things ever happened to our league. Because it does.
It's helped to eliminate tanking. That's one of those words
that's taboo in sports.
Speaker 6 (36:40):
Right.
Speaker 12 (36:41):
We don't talk about tanking that much anymore in the NBA,
and there was a time, as you know, where we
discussed it that nausea.
Speaker 6 (36:47):
So I'm fine with it. I mean, how about the
irony with the Mavericks getting the pick?
Speaker 12 (36:53):
And I sent Nico a text last night congratulating him
because he's caught a lot of hell.
Speaker 6 (36:58):
And listen, you had this whom You're going to catch a.
Speaker 12 (37:00):
Lot of hell when you trade a star of the
magnitude of a Luca Dancis who took you to the
finals a year prior. So yeah, I'm a fan of it.
I think you want to try to make the game
as healthy as possible and not turn your fan base
collectively off. And this is one way that I think
it's been a positive.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Talking to Greg Anthony NBA on TNT Anlet's spend eleven
seasons in the NBA and won to title UNLV back
in nineteen ninety. Let me go back to Luca. I
just don't know why Nico wouldn't leak it that there
is the possibility Luca could be available, because it feels
like you could have gotten a little bit more, maybe
(37:42):
a lot more. I would have insisted Austin Reeves was
in that trade, like I just I And I don't
know why Dallas, you know, wouldn't ask for that. But
you could have gotten other teams who probably would have
come up with a lot better trade proposal, don't you think.
Speaker 12 (37:59):
Well, there's two things you got to consider. One, think
about the backlash he's faced since the trade went down.
If you leaked that and it gets out, I think
you create more problems than solutions. That's just the reality,
and that's my perspective. But I don't think you can
leak that. And it's easy to Monday morning quarterback for
(38:22):
all of us to say what they could or could
not have got. I think what you got to focus
in on, Okay, what is the objective? Because a case
in point, you could have gotten four first or five
first round picks, but they're objective was to win. Now,
Kyrie Irving's best basketball. Hopefully he's going to recover and
he can still play at his heights, but he's not
(38:43):
going to be better for the moving forward. Right, you've
got a small window to win now, so he wanted
to match the timeline when after the trade was made
of his two best players, and so that's why I
think he went the route he did. We all, everybody
can second guess after the fact, but ultimately, listen, if
(39:04):
they're healthy, that team would have been a better team
than the Lakers just because of how they were built.
Help plays a big role in it. It didn't materialize.
Now you got the first pick, and now they're gonna
have more concerns and questions because I'm a huge Cooper
Flag fan.
Speaker 6 (39:22):
But does he fit their timeline?
Speaker 9 (39:24):
No?
Speaker 12 (39:24):
You know, can you win like this is? This is
a better situation. But there's some similarity. If you go
back to when the Warriors drafted James Wiseman with the
second pick, there was a lot of talk about, hey,
should we move off the pick, and in that case
probably would have made more sense because I think there
was a lack of consensus on just how good James
Wiseman was. You know, that was more of a Kwame
(39:47):
bound Brown scenario from the standpoint that you know, you
took him based on the potential, but he wasn't as certain,
He wasn't a proven commodity. That I think Cooper Flag is,
and so that there's gonna be some concern and a consideration.
I would assume you're at least gonna listen to see
ultimately what can transpire, because again, you want to have
(40:11):
a chance to compete at the highest level now, and
getting that first pick creates a lot more leverage for Dico,
Harrison and the MAVs than they had going into that lottery.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
Yeah, I think you got a two year window with
Kyrie and Ad. It feels like in their prime. Hopefully
both they're going to be healthy or ish. Cooper Flag's
not gonna be nineteen until in the season, and what
can you expect from him? You got some big guys.
Christie's good. You know, he's a good addition for them.
(40:44):
I agree with you, you know, the timeline there maybe
not syncing up. But would you trade Anthony Davis and
Cooper Flag for Luca?
Speaker 12 (40:56):
Would I trade Anthony David? That's a tough question. Luka. Well,
I think a lot of it is relative to who
I am, what I have when.
Speaker 6 (41:04):
I make that deal.
Speaker 12 (41:05):
I'm just but like, and that's this you're saying, that's
basically what happened. Now, I would say that there's a
lot of certainty with Luca. Listen, you know, you're you
got to build the right way around him. He's got
to make a commitment to his body.
Speaker 6 (41:21):
You know.
Speaker 12 (41:21):
The different Nuggets were in a similar situation with with
the Joker a few years ago. They went to him
and said, look, we need you to commit to your body.
That's how you commit to us. And he transformed his body.
He's become became in much better shape. And I think
there was maybe some conversations like that with Luca. Maybe
(41:43):
it didn't go over well. I guarantee you the Lakers
just had this conversation with him when they had their
meeting with JJ and and and their their front office
with de Linka, when they had that dinner the other night.
You know, because I do think physically he's got to get.
Speaker 6 (41:58):
In better shape.
Speaker 12 (42:00):
I think it's gonna behoove him too, and it is
hard to do, but he's got to make that commitment
to that organization if they want to have a chance
to ultimately win a championship. There's a reason why Dallas
like people can poopoor to get mad all at one
of deco. But the reality is physically, and we saw
it defensively, he was a liability in that series, and
(42:21):
while they had other issues with the roster. As great
a talent as he is, and I'm a huge look
of doncis fan. I love the guy skill set, you
still need him to have to not at least be
a liability. You don't have to be a plus defender,
but you can be a liability defensively, especially.
Speaker 6 (42:37):
With his size.
Speaker 12 (42:38):
You know, it's one thing if you got a slong guard,
but when you've got his size and physicality, he can
have a much more impactful place on the defense for
the Lakers.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Who let's say they win their series the respective series,
who is more dangerous the pacers of the Knicks.
Speaker 6 (42:59):
As you get later in.
Speaker 12 (43:00):
The playoffs, your best players ability to play against great teams,
great defense becomes more relevant.
Speaker 6 (43:08):
So I would say, and let me say.
Speaker 12 (43:10):
To preface if by saying this, that this is the
first time since I've been in broadcasting, maybe even since
I've been associated with the game where I really felt
like the final eight teams could all win it. I
never had that feel because generally, you know, you get
an upset, you get a team or two in there,
and you're like I they don't really.
Speaker 6 (43:28):
Have a chance.
Speaker 12 (43:29):
But I really felt like all things being equal, everybody healthy,
everybody playing their best, that they all had a chance.
Having said that, I love Indiana's team. I think they're
really hard to defend because what they do is the
hardest thing to do, which is defend the past. They
play fast, they put a lot of pressure on you,
(43:49):
and they're much improved defensive team.
Speaker 6 (43:51):
They were a top four team in the league since
the first of the year.
Speaker 12 (43:54):
Having said that, you want a guy who saw it
last night with with Brunson, You need a guy that
can score against great defense. When you play a seven
game series, you can't trick anybody. You're not bringing in
new concepts. You're not gonna recreate how you play. We
know what you do, you know what we do. And
as you get later in the series, you gotta have
(44:17):
guys that can go beat their man. They can win
matchups and compromise your defense. And Jalen Brunson has consistently
in the postseason has shown you he can do that.
And they built that team to play the Celtics. They've
got great positional side on the wings. Those guys are
great two way players. With Anonobi and bridges, and while
(44:39):
they don't have the depths, it hasn't been an issue
for them as of yet.
Speaker 6 (44:45):
And so I would if those two teams end up meeting,
and right now the odds are looking that way, that
both up three to one, I would give a slight
edge to the Knicks because of that. Now, having said that,
this Pacers team, they are really good. I thought they
the most underrated team in the postseason. They've proven that
to be the case. They've been dominant in this series. Now,
(45:06):
missus injuries, this, that, and the other, but they.
Speaker 12 (45:08):
Have dominated a team that have been dominant over the
entire regular season.
Speaker 6 (45:13):
So you got to tip your hat to Rick Carlisle
and his group.
Speaker 2 (45:16):
How do you think NBC is gonna use Michael Jordan
with their NBA coverage?
Speaker 5 (45:20):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (45:21):
Man, I was pumped to hear that, right.
Speaker 12 (45:23):
You know, in a lot of ways, he became Michael
Jordan at NBC, right.
Speaker 6 (45:29):
They they both really benefited from that.
Speaker 12 (45:31):
That's where the game had its greate as growth to
the likes of which we've never seen it.
Speaker 6 (45:35):
I've been really impressed with what they've done thus far.
Speaker 12 (45:38):
If you've seen the promo they put out not too
long ago, where they incorporated all of their broadcast talent
and people involved with the.
Speaker 6 (45:45):
Network of Peacock. I thought that was brilliant.
Speaker 12 (45:49):
It'll be I gotta believe that he's gonna They're gonna
have to be able to go back.
Speaker 6 (45:54):
To who he was as a player. I hope they
do that. I don't think he's gonna be in this
studio show.
Speaker 12 (46:00):
I don't think he's gonna be doing games, but I
would like to hear his perspective and how he looks
at today's crop of stars and just opposed that to
what he dealt with. So I'm not sure how they're
gonna use him, but I'll be tuning in, you know, obviously,
as we all are, because of what he's meant to
our game.
Speaker 5 (46:20):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (46:20):
And it's awesome that after all these years, he's at
least going to let us the viewing public, have a
little insight into his mindset and who he is. I
think the last dance helped with that, and I think
this could be a further further and some of that.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
Has Reggie Miller ever admitted that he pushed off.
Speaker 12 (46:38):
Yes, yes, multiple times he's admitted it, but yeah he did.
But we we listen, We gave that gave away, and
that was that game cost us.
Speaker 6 (46:49):
I think we lost that series.
Speaker 12 (46:50):
I mean, we beat him for the most part when
we played against him, but yeah, that one that was haunting.
I'm just glad I got to work the Bucks Pacers
game when the Pace just did it to the Bucks.
You know that that kind of allowed me to purge
some demons a little bit now, because.
Speaker 6 (47:07):
That was an amazing game, and I can It's.
Speaker 12 (47:10):
Funny in the moment, you know, you're such there's such
shocked when you actually go through it. You have no
real perspective historically right until well after. So now on
the outside looking in watching that materialize, Man, that is
just it's still hard to imagine something like that could happen.
Speaker 6 (47:29):
Uh and unfortunately happened to me.
Speaker 12 (47:31):
But but u or Nick, But yeah, I'm glad that
we now have something else to reference when it comes
to historical comebacks.
Speaker 6 (47:40):
That's for sure.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
Great to talk to you. I hope you're doing well.
Thanks for joining us, all right, Thank you, Dan, Greg
Anthony
