Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Ross Tucker, CBS Sports Westwood One, NFL college football analyst,
host of the Ross Tucker Football podcast, and he was
also hosting Westwood ones Live NFL schedule release show last night. Ross,
great to see you. What stood out from the schedule
release last night?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Well, I think the first thing that stood out to me, Dan,
is that Westwood one even has a schedule release show
on the radio, and that they.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
Asked me to do it.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
I'm as curious as anybody to hear what the ratings
are like per feeople hearing me talk about.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
The schedule that come out. It's really unbelievable the way.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Ross, it's kind of like this show, we don't want
to know the numbers. It's just let us assume a
lot of people are watching and listening. That's all. Don't
get caught up at that.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
I mean, it's changed so much from when I was
a player, But like the Today Show and Good Morning America,
they're like announcing these games during the NBA playoffs, which
is hilarious. By the way, Happy birthday, Dan, I'm honored
to be on during your birthday. Please don't talk about
wings and a nice salum about to have like a
(01:16):
yogurt parfe or something in my house.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
But you know, so it's so funny.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Dan as a former player, the first thing that jumped
out to me about the schedule is the Cowboys. My
mind is blown. Right now, they get four weekends off. Okay,
they have four Thursday games all right now. Two of
those are back to back, so they'll just have a
regular week when they have them back to back, but
(01:42):
they have a bye and then those other three Thursday games.
If you're a player and you have a Thursday game,
you get the weekend off. So you know, fans don't
look at this as much as like a player does.
But it used to be you only have one by
week and maybe you get the weekend off, but the
coach still might have you something to doing something on Friday.
(02:03):
The Cowboys players having four weekends off during football season
is like the craziest thing I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Okay, but do you think, like, why would the NFL
do this?
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Well, because they want to put the Cowboys in as
many standalone games as possible if not.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Going to be good. The over under seven and a
half wins.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
It's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
You know what, it doesn't matter that they care about
the ratings. I literally just interviewed Mike North, the VP
of broadcasting for the NFL, for the Ross Tucker Podcast,
and I was really curious about Thanksgiving right the Thanksgiving
Day game is Chiefs Cowboys. And my argument to Mike was,
(02:47):
everybody watches the Thanksgiving game anyway, like everybody. Do you
know anybody that doesn't have the game on the TV
on Thanksgiving?
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Their point was, let's see if we can break records.
Let's not just say hey, everybody's gonna watch anyway. We're
gonna get thirty five million people. Let's see how far
we can take this thing and push the limit. And
the Chiefs and the Cowboys are easily the two highest
rating teams in the NFL right now, which is why
(03:16):
they put them together on Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
The first thing that jumped out at me is the
Steelers playing the Jets to open the season. And do
you do this as just a oh uh, we didn't
realize that, or is it Well, of course we're going
to open up with this because Aaron Rodgers is going
to play Week one for the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Well, at a minimum, they know that justin Fields. It's
an awkward situation because he got benched last year. The
Steelers tried to resign him this offseason. They wanted him
when they couldn't get Matthew Stafford. They wanted to bring
Fields back, but not enough. They didn't pay him enough,
and Field's probably wasn't happy about getting benched.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
I don't blame him, so he goes to the Jets.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
So there's already a built in intrigue in storyline.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
I can't buy into the Justin Field storyline. I mean,
I'm gonna watch. I do like Justin Fields, but I'm
not going, Oh man, this is payback time for Justin
Fields against the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
The Rogers thing, I think that they strongly suspect Rogers
will play for the Steelers, and that obviously takes to
another level, which I think brings up a really interesting point.
At this point, Dan, why hasn't Aaron signed yet? Okay,
you could have made the argument, if he's gonna play,
you could have made the argument he wanted to wait
(04:38):
to see.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
How the draft played out.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Right, at this point, the only reasonable I'll say this,
there's two reasonable arguments for why he hasn't signed yet.
One is that you never know what happened to other
teams like Derek Carr and the Saints retiring, and theoretically
that gives him another option or two. He doesn't want
(05:01):
to take crap from people like me for not being
at the offseason program. He doesn't want to go to
Pittsburgh and Meg, he does not want to do OTAs.
He does not want to do mini camp. He's gonna
wait as long as he can so he doesn't get
criticism for that.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
I got news for you, Aaron. I'm gonna criticize you anyway.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
If you know you're gonna go to the Steelers and
you're with a new team, a new offense with Arthur Smith.
All those other guys are out there with phase two
of the offseason program right now. Don't tell me you're committed.
Don't tell me you want to win games this year.
Don't tell me it's a priority if you're not there
working with your new teammates in your new offense.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
I'm trying to figure out those some of these teams
who are gonna be in primetime, like the Dolphins. Well,
Dolphins have like five primetime games.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Correct? Why Dan, we're sharing a brain here? That was
one of the things I was going to bring up
if you brought it up. The games, I'm surprised. So
the primetime games is the most interesting aspect of the
schedule release because that's the NFL telling you who they
think will be good or interesting and who they think won't. Right,
(06:13):
So no primetime games for the Browns, Titans, or Saints.
Titans maybe the most interesting there since they just had
the number one overall pick, who people already feel like
got disrespected.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
But the Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
I think the Chargers is interesting that they got five
primetime games. The Falcons, the Atlanta Falcons, Okay, five primetime games.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Why why?
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Like they're not even the favorite in the NFC South,
which isn't a great division.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
The Bucks are. And then I think the Niners is interesting.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Right the NFL is betting on a big comeback from
the Niners. But I agree the Dolphins jumped out to
me for sure. Among that group of teams. They all
get five primetime games, where the Titans, Saints, and Browns
get zero.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
You don't want to see the Browns in primetime, do you?
Unless Shadoor Sanders is playing.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
I do want to see him, you know why, because
I think it's going to be Shodoor Sanders or Dylan
Gabriel starting if you look at the trade they made
week one. I don't know about Week one, but I
think both of those kids are going to start a
bunch of games this year so that the Browns find
out what they have in them.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
I mean, but could you imagine this, Ross, we're talking
to Ross Tucker. Okay, what if Shadoor Sanders ends up
starting for the Browns and Aaron Rodgers doesn't play for
the Steelers and they have Mason Rudolph and they decided
to pass on Shadoor Sanders. I think Shudor Sanders is
going to play. He's going to start games this year
for the Browns. But Pittsburgh we thought was going to
(07:47):
take him and they passed on him. Well, you know
everybody did, uh, but that to me? Could you imagine
if he starts for the Browns and let's say he
is good, you have Mason Rudolph and you decided to
pass on Shador Sanders. How do you think that's going
to go over in Pittsburgh?
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Not real well, especially when they could have taken him
with that third round pick.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
You know, you can argue, Okay, he's not worth the
first rounder.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
They didn't have a second rounder when they passed on
him in the third round. I was floored because he
had this great meeting with Mike Tomlin. By the way,
Mike Tomlin evidently has a lot of great meetings. He
had a great meeting with their rounders. He had a
terrific meeting with Shador Sanders. You know what the problem is,
neither one of those guys played for the Steelers.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Well with the meeting.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
For me, all surgeries are successful surgeries on athletes, right,
All Mike Tomlin interviews are great interviews.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
You know.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
The only team that we've heard, like the Giants didn't
have a good interview with Shaidor Sanders. Like that came
out and everybody criticized the reporters say, hey, you know,
put a name to this, and you know whatever, they
didn't have a good meeting which shad Or Sanders. But
I do think he's going to start games for them,
and I think that that's going to be an interesting storyline.
(09:09):
No primetime games. I don't know if there's any flex
in at any point during the season where you go,
you know what, let's take the Cleveland Browns because of
Shador Sanders, I would do that.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
I totally agree.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Let's look at this logically, right, If you think about
what the Browns did with the Travis Hunter trade and
getting the Jaguars first round pick in twenty twenty six,
they clearly, I think, realize they don't have a franchise quarterback.
They need to try to find one. And what I
would argue is why does it make sense? I mean,
(09:41):
maybe they'll do it for a couple of games, but
does it make sense to start Joe Flacco and Kenny
Pickett this year? The Browns are not going to the
Super Bowl, They're highly unlikely to even go to the playoffs.
I think that they took Gabriel and then in particular
Shador Sanders. I think they thought it was value. I
think a couple of lottery tickets. Let both these guys
(10:03):
start five or six games this year.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
Maybe we hit on one of them, maybe one of.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Them is the starter, and then we can use those
two first round picks next year to make the team
better around him. If not, no harm, no foul, We'll
get our franchise quarterback next year with these two first
round picks. In a draft that's considered to be much
better at the quarterback position.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Would you rather watch Travis Hunter play or Shudor Sanders play.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Oh, I'm gonna say Travis Hunter. I think I'm curious
about Shador just like everybody else's. But I'm fascinated by
Travis Hunter. I told you last time I was on.
I think he's the best college football player I've ever seen,
and i just want to see him play both ways,
see how well it goes, and see what he is
(10:53):
on both sides of the ball, and if it makes sense,
Like if he's an above average starter on both sides
and he's playing a lot of snaps, does that make sense?
Or would you rather have him try to specialize in
one and be elite because average starters get one salary,
Elite players or above average starters get one salary. Elite
(11:14):
players get paid a lot more. This is We've never
seen it before, and I'm fascinating to see how it
plays out.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Great to see you, Thank you Ross always.
Speaker 4 (11:23):

Joining us now Hall of Famer Jason Kidd, mAb's head
coach and on an NBA championship with the MAVs. Back
in twenty eleven, two time Olympic gold medalist, we were
just wondering, where do you rank on the all time
assist list. Let's go around the room and guess where
is Jay Kidd on the all time list?
Speaker 4 (12:52):
There?
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Todd third, third, Okay Seaton two, Marvin third, Paul two.
I'm gonna go four. Where is Jake Kidd on the
all time assist list? Stocked number one?
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Chris Paul new number.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Two spot, Jason Kidd in a three spot, Lebron James.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
On his heels? Is Lebron gonna catch Jake Kidd? He's
got five hundred and eight to go. Man, you're getting kicked.
You're getting kicked down here? Man, How are you doing?
Speaker 7 (13:27):
I'm doing great, Dan, I'm doing great. Yes, that happens.
I didn't play long enough.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Best passer, though, in the history of the game, is
who not who had the most assists?
Speaker 7 (13:38):
Best passer? Best passer. I'm gonna go with Stockton. I
think you know the bounce pass he had, big hands,
could take it off the dribble, could pause with it.
Some would say is maybe double dribble, But I think
(13:59):
he knew how to manipulate the ball off the dribble
and being able to find his target, and he had
some pretty good targets.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Okay, but when did carrying become legal in the NBA.
Speaker 7 (14:12):
In nineteen sixty sixty. Well, it's always been a part
of the game.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Well no, no, like now it's just you can have
your hand on the bottom of the ball and then go.
Was it Iverson who started it?
Speaker 7 (14:28):
I don't think it was Iverson. I think it's the
guy we were just talking about.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Dockton was the first guy to carry the ball.
Speaker 7 (14:34):
I think if you look at Stockton, he knew how
to manipulate the dribble.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Was he dirty?
Speaker 8 (14:42):
He was smart?
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Where were you on Lottery night?
Speaker 8 (14:50):
Lottery Night?
Speaker 7 (14:51):
I was in Newport Beach at a board meeting for
Gold Rental and I thought, okay, well we're going to
probably fall backwards instead of going forwards. So my phone
started to go crazy during the meeting and I kept
texting the person back saying are you sure it's not
(15:12):
you're missing a one? Because he goes you're in the
top Ford, I mean fourteen, and he goes no, and
he goes, I think you just got one. I go,
you mean we stayed at eleven? And uh, and then
my phone started going crazy.
Speaker 8 (15:25):
So that's where I was.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Wait, you're not even watching the lottery.
Speaker 7 (15:30):
I you know, things just weren't going well for us.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Really, what else has happened this year?
Speaker 7 (15:39):
A lot of injuries, a lot of but I just felt,
you know, we were going to stay around eleven, if
not go backwards, just the way that things were going
for us this year. But incredible to get number one.
Everyone's excited, the organization, the city, the MAVs fans, and
also they head coach. So we're really excited about being
(16:02):
number one.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Planning on keeping the pick and taking Cooper Flag.
Speaker 7 (16:06):
Yes, I'm just the coach, So yes, I would say
that we're all concentrating on number one. The draft is
deep and so, but as the name you just brought up,
I think we're all focused.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
On Have you spoken to Cooper Flag?
Speaker 7 (16:22):
I have not spoken to Cooper Flag. I don't want
to break any of the rules and get us in trouble,
so I want to make sure that when I do
answer these questions that. You know, the speculation is is
Cooper Flag, but there's you know, we got to go
through the process.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Okay, So you would get in trouble if you did
reach out to Cooper Flag before the draft.
Speaker 7 (16:44):
Yeah, well no, not not technically. Once we bring him in,
we'll get out his name.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
I would.
Speaker 7 (16:51):
I'm trying to be politically correct here and make sure
that we don't get in trouble and I don't step
on any toes.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
Okay, So the kid from Duke there we go.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Are you are you excited? We're excited.
Speaker 7 (17:05):
I don't want to get you fined. Okay, thank you,
thank you. I can't afford the fine. And so we're
excited about the kid at Duke. I can't wait to
talk to the coach over there, Coach Shire and also
a good friend of mine, coach k a mentor, and
get some background on the on the kid at Duke.
(17:27):
We're really excited about this opportunity.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
You were twenty one as a rookie. I can't imagine
what nineteen is going to be like for the kid
from Duke. How is that different or has the game
made it easier for that transition for somebody that young?
Speaker 7 (17:44):
No, I don't know if it's easier. I think eighteen,
he's going to be drafted. He'll be eighteen. He doesn't
turn nineteen until December, and so just understanding he's young,
but he's very talented, can play both ends, and so
being able to have older players and when I say
(18:05):
that out of respect, they're not dinosaurs, but when you
look at the age of thirty kai ad guys that
are here, Clay can definitely help him with the process
of going through a rookie season.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
And the kid from Duke doesn't have to walk in
and be the savior like he probably would have been
in Washington, DC or maybe Charlotte, that you can kind
of ease him in to being a third or fourth
option on the team.
Speaker 7 (18:31):
Yeah, I think this is a great situation for him.
I think when you talk about the different guys that
we have already on the team, the pressure of living
up to number one will be a lot easier with
the talent around him. When you talk about the other clubs,
he would have to produce right away at a high,
(18:52):
high level. And so I think this is a great
situation for him to grow his game where the pressure
is and as as high. But we are playing for
a championship and so it would be a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Jason Kidd, Hall of Famer, Mavericks head coach. How were
you told that you had just traded Luca?
Speaker 7 (19:14):
I was told by my boss Nico that we were
going to make a change.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
But where where give me the give me this scenario?
Speaker 4 (19:21):
Hotel?
Speaker 7 (19:22):
This is in the hotel in Cleveland, and so he
said the news was going to hit in an hour
and and that's how it went down. And so uh,
when he told me, I started, I went back to
my room to start figuring out how we're going to
use a D and Christy because of this change.
Speaker 8 (19:40):
And so so.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
You found out you didn't even get a chance to argue.
Speaker 7 (19:45):
No, there was there's no arguing. This is this is
what was going to take place. And so uh, for me,
it's to to move forward from past experiences as a player.
I've been traded the day after Christmas, I think from
Dallas to Phoenix and thinking they were trading uh Jimmy
or Jamal, and they told me that they were trading
(20:06):
me and so and so just understanding that the train
keeps moving, and I thought my players and my coaching
staff did an incredible job with you know, once they
heard the news of preparing to keep moving forward, and
and especially with all the trade and the injuries, I
thought we did an incredible job.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
When's the last time you spoke to Luca?
Speaker 7 (20:31):
I texted him on that morning. Uh, and that's the
last time I've talked to him.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
How did he respond to your text?
Speaker 7 (20:39):
I don't think he was too happy, and just again
from the experience of being traded, you know, maybe being surprised,
you know, upset feelings are high. But again, I loved
the opportunity of coaching Luca. He's an incredible person and
we all know his talent is one of the best
in the world. And so you know, again my mindset
(21:01):
is to deal with the cars that I'm dealt and
and keep pushing forward. And I've always said this publicly
and probably I wish Luca the best. He's one of
the best players in the world.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
I thought you were going to say that you meet
with Nico in his hotel room, he tells you he's
trading Luca, and then you go back to your hotel
room and cry. But but but that didn't happen, right,
I didn't cry.
Speaker 7 (21:23):
I was more or less trying to figure out how
we're going to make this thing work.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
You know.
Speaker 8 (21:30):
This is a big trade.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
But who do you call first after Nico tells you
that you're trading Luca.
Speaker 7 (21:38):
I didn't call anybody. I put my phone down and
looked at the ceiling. I started trying to brainstorm of
how this is going to go down. I did not
call anybody once this hit, and my my job as
the coaches is to make sure that we all are
pushing in the right direction. There was going to be
(21:59):
a lot of questions that morning from staff and players,
and I thought Nico did a great job of of
handling it by having the meeting and and for us
pushing forward.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Anybody have a better handle than Kyrie in that in
NBA history.
Speaker 7 (22:15):
Oh, I'm gonna say no, But I'm gonna say there's
some close seconds. When you talk about Isaiah Thomas Detroit,
Isaiah Thomas.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Underrated by the way.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
Very underrated, very underrated.
Speaker 7 (22:35):
I think sometimes it's it's our fault we don't we
don't bring up Isaiah Jay Williams White Chocolate. I thought
his handle and his passing is incredible storytelling. I don't
know if we we don't do a good, good enough
job of storytelling with Isaiah or our past UH players,
(22:59):
and so I think Isaiah would be right there as
one b.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
Yeah, but I think with Isaiah likability, the way they played,
they were the bad boys. You know, they were trying
to hurt Jordan, and I think that maybe that plays
into it with Isaiah.
Speaker 8 (23:16):
Well, I don't know if they were just trying to
hurt Jordan. They were trying to hurt everybody.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
But if the Pistons don't treat Michael that way, Michael
doesn't start weightlifting, and like that made Michael even greater.
They're responsible for unleashing, you know, the new and improved
Michael Jordan.
Speaker 8 (23:36):
Yeah, I think.
Speaker 7 (23:37):
You know, sometimes when we look at things that take
place in our league, some are looked upon as negatives,
but a lot of players or coaches use them as
positives and try to turn it into something. And as
you said, unleash's the beast and Michael and he took
that and ran with it, got stronger. His game was,
(23:57):
his talent was already elite, and so I think he
used as motivation to become the best in the world.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Do you remember facing him the first time?
Speaker 8 (24:09):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (24:11):
Oh, what happened now.
Speaker 7 (24:13):
It was actually nice. He was nice to me. I'll
never forget I ended up on him. Unfortunately, I didn't
know how the switch happened, but he asked me in
the post, and all I can think about is just
turn around and fade away and keep it simple and nice.
But he went baseline and he took off, and unfortunately
(24:34):
my wife I didn't. I missed it, and I was like, oh,
this is going to be on ESPN, and he's gonna
dunk it and look and you know, do what he does.
But he just did a nice little reverse layup and
looked and kind of winked, and I said, oh man,
I'm glad he'd dunk it.
Speaker 8 (24:51):
But he took it easy on me.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
But why did you realize he was better than you?
Speaker 8 (24:56):
Oh before tip off?
Speaker 2 (24:59):
Well, you know, you guys have egos. I mean, like
Larry Bird had to get to a point where he said,
you know what, he's the best player in the game.
My magic had to you. Guys, Are you know, pretty
tough when you're going to relinquish something like that.
Speaker 7 (25:12):
Yeah, But I think we all understood when we have
to be realistic, understanding Michael is the best and so
coming in as a rookie, you know, you wanted that challenge,
you wanted to compete against the best, but understanding he
was going to win majority of those battles, and he did,
and and so you couldn't wait for that game to
(25:35):
be over so that you can go play else that
you can take a stuff.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Maybe they'll write a book on this year for the
Dallas Mavericks one day, just this year of everything that's happened,
because hard to believe, right.
Speaker 7 (25:49):
Yeah, I think you're right. I think there's someone's going
to write a.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Book or thirty for thirty on ESPN.
Speaker 8 (25:58):
There could be a thirty for thirty for sure.
Speaker 7 (26:00):
There's enough content, you know there when you talk about
just there was in you know, a season within a season,
and there's maybe three seasons just with the trade and
with all the injuries that we had, trying to keep
you know, pushing forward and finding a way into the
playing game and winning one and unfortunately coming up short
(26:21):
against Memphis, but just everything that took place. I think
there is a book there, and then probably at thirty
for thirty.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Good to talk to you again, Thanks for joining.
Speaker 7 (26:30):
Us, Happy birthday, Thank you, Thank you, you look great man.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
What did you get me?
Speaker 7 (26:38):
Well, I was going to say a jump shot, but
you already believe that you can shoot.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
So well, now we don't. We don't want to go
down the road, do we. We don't want to go
down memory lane? Because do we?
Speaker 9 (26:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (26:50):
Why not? It's your birthday you.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
I go to Dallas to shoot against you, right, yes,
I come to down. I fly to Dallas to play
know you in a game of horse?
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (27:02):
And what happened after practice? Who went home and left
me there out shooting by myself?
Speaker 4 (27:10):
You did well?
Speaker 7 (27:11):
You I forfeited, so you automatical?
Speaker 9 (27:14):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Yeah, and then all of a sudden, who becomes a
great three point shooter?
Speaker 4 (27:19):
You do?
Speaker 7 (27:20):
Yeah, you turned me into a great three point shooter.
So you get credit. I'm giving you credit. And you
turned me into a three point shooter.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
You're welcome. You're welcome. You're welcome. You're welcome. So I
don't need a jump shot. We know that.
Speaker 9 (27:36):
You know?
Speaker 8 (27:36):
Maybe what hudder driver?
Speaker 2 (27:41):
How about this? How about a autograph jersey from the
kid from Duke Oh done, Okay, here we go easy,
just making dreams come true? Thank you, Bud. That's Jason Kidd,
Hall of Famer yeah. I told you guys the story here.
(28:02):
I told you the story. I went to Dallas. We
had a great relationship, and I said, I will beat
you in a shooting contest. And I'm there in the
stands waiting for practice to end. And I'm waiting it ends,
and I'm going, where's Jason? The clubhouse guy goes, Oh,
(28:23):
he left, and I go he left and he admitted
he didn't he knew that I could shoot there. He
is right there. He just came back. He wants he
knows it's true. He knows it's true.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Mike jo Rico, NBC sports host play by play. He's
doing it all. He's got Sunday Night Football, he's got
the Preakness. What doesn't Mike do? Mike joins us on
the program, What don't you do?
Speaker 9 (29:00):
Do I have to sing Happy birthday?
Speaker 2 (29:02):
That'd be nice. I'd like to hear let happy birthday
to you?
Speaker 9 (29:08):
What do you do for your What do you do
for your birthday? Do you cake? What kind of cake
do you like? Special dinner. What's the DP birthday?
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Why don't you should ask my guys the DAN that's
what they're going to do for me. I want to
know what you want. This is about you. It's your day, Okay.
I would I would say you joining me on the
show birth thank you. I thought we were getting Michael
Jordan since he's part of the family, and they said, no,
it's Michael Chirico because I said, I said get me Michael,
(29:38):
and he got me. You so so, but do.
Speaker 9 (29:41):
You remember, wait, it's good. Do you remember when uh
when Mark Jones, who is still doing a great job
doing the NBA on ESPNS, do you remember when we
were all in Bristol and Mark was doing the NBA
today and Mark would do the shot fake and then
the fadeaway jumping at the end of the show, right right,
I think Jones. I think Jonesy interviewed Michael after a
(30:02):
finals game that he used to do that a whole
bunch too, right, And I think I think Jones he said,
MJ in the house with the other m.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
J oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yes. But I think
Mark Jones used to dribble like behind his back and
then he'd say if you're at the end of your
NBA rope, tie a nod or something.
Speaker 9 (30:21):
Yeah, exactly. But I remember when Mark would do that
show and with the analyst on some of those shows,
God Rest his soul, the great Doctor Jack Ramsey and
Doctor Jack be sitting in the chair and Jones would
be jumping up, faking and taking the jump.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Right, those are good days Mark Jones. So yeah, yeah,
Mark Jones is the first announcer I ever heard say
somebody is taking it to the house. First time I remember,
and I remember management, a couple of members of management
no longer there, who said, got to put an end
(31:00):
of that.
Speaker 9 (31:01):
Oh man, Jonesy. Two things about Jonesy loves loves his basketball.
Awesome vocabulary, great storyteller. Jonesy has been doing games for
a long time at a really good level, like one
of those people who are underappreciated for the amount of work,
the longevity college NBA college football. You're right, I don't
(31:24):
remember that specific instant, but I do remember somebody, whether
it's you or someone else, saying that. Mark was the
first guy to say that taken into the house, and
that's become you know, synonymous with touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
So good for Jonesy. I didn't.
Speaker 9 (31:36):
I didn't think we talked Jonesy, but there you.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
I didn't either. Okay, So do you know what role
Michael Jordan plays in the NBA coverage on NBC exactly?
Speaker 9 (31:47):
No special contributor part, is what I do know. I
think it'll be one of those things that evolves over time.
I'm excited that he would even consider doing it.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
How would you use him? Did you use him?
Speaker 9 (32:01):
How would I? I don't know without talking with him,
what his level of granular NBA following the league transaction
by transaction level is right now. But from time and
management and ownership and obviously the unbelievable playing career and
(32:21):
the way the game has evolved. I think there's a
unique space there to hear from Michael where the game is,
where it's going. And I'm curious what he thinks about
a three on one guys who runs to the three
point line. I'm curious what he thinks is the guy
who wanted to play so often about the amount of
play guys have and the style of the way the
game is played now on both ends of the floor.
(32:42):
So even that alone, I would be curious. So I
don't think it's one of those you don't want Michael.
I don't think sitting at the desk trading opinions of
the moment on this or that. I'd like to hear
it at a high level. How that manifests itself, I
don't know. I hope I get to be involved with
it a little bit. But look, any chance to hear
(33:02):
Michael Jordan talk basketball I'm signed up for. So yeah,
I hope it involves in something good. I don't think
he's going to be at the desk.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
I think maybe you could treat it like Kobe did
details where Kobe kind of went into the lab and said,
and you know, you have to have somebody with Mike
to kind of help him, guide him along with things.
What do you see here? What would you do here?
And then maybe you could get that on his terms,
so then he can go out and play thirty six holes,
(33:30):
which is.
Speaker 9 (33:32):
Really important. And you know what, that's our life goal. Yeah,
we all say I want to be like Mike. I
want to roll up and crank out thirty six holes
a day. So look to have anything related to Michael
Jordan connected to the NBA is really good.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
I did get to.
Speaker 9 (33:48):
Hang out on Monday in New York with Reggie Miller
and Jamal Crawford and Vince Carter part of our team
of sum mellow at the Derby. I'm just excited about
our group, and it'll be fun to get back into
the league and to do with guys who are you know,
contemporary to the league and still connected in so many ways.
Speaker 4 (34:05):
It's going to be a blast and whatever.
Speaker 9 (34:07):
Michael Grings is pretty special.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
Mike Kariko, NBC sports host and play by play voice
NBC Sunday Night Football. Also, and you're going to be
hosting the Preakness Stakes coming up this weekend. At least
helps planning on it.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
I'd like to make it through.
Speaker 9 (34:23):
Yeah, at least get through one race this time.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Okay, when did you know you were in trouble at
the Kentucky Derby.
Speaker 9 (34:29):
So for those who don't know, I have a nut
allergy and a severe reaction which probably every seven or
eight years and happens maybe you just eat something that's
contaminated with nuts, and I knew I wasn't feeling well
when I got up to the studio which is above
the paddock, which is about two fifteen or so. I
was going on at two thirty. It's when our windows
(34:50):
started and when I'm at Ferrid who did an awesome job.
So that's a hard show. It's one of the hardest
shows that we do every year, just in terms of
the moving parts. And I'm did he bring me your
lunch that day? That's you know, that's what people are
asking and we have not gotten to the bottom of that.
Investigation continues at this moment. It's so funny. So many
(35:12):
people asked Ahmed that, like, oh, it's.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
The nicest person on planet Earth, please, but you know
what you to talk about late scratches. I didn't think
it would be an announcer. I thought it would be
a horse.
Speaker 9 (35:22):
But doing a credit for the start, then it's like
going in to keep your consecutive games freak going. I
got the start, I just didn't didn't get didn't get
to the finish line. So I knew about the ten
minutes before. I wasn't feeling great. But sometimes you can
get past that and you feel better the rest of
the day. And I was just starting to get worse
and then your throat closes and all that, so I
(35:43):
I was in bad shape there in terms of allergy
and allergic reaction for a little while. The positive, if
there was other than I'm ed doing a great job,
was that I didn't know thirty million Americans have food
allergies of some sort and the fact that because they
I just want to say, you're under the west, say
I had an allergic reaction and I have another allergy
(36:04):
is no reason to hide.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
It's the truth.
Speaker 9 (36:07):
And I heard from so many people, including moms, who said,
you know, our kid has a nut allergy. It is
embarrassed to talk about it. Thanks for bringing it up.
So we're able to at least mention that on the
Today's show and get that out there.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
So so you have some folks, you're the spokesperson for
none out Okay, No, I'm not somehow. Yeah, you're making
money now another gig here.
Speaker 9 (36:28):
There is no trust me, there is no money involved
with that.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
But did you know, Dan? Did you know?
Speaker 9 (36:35):
Okay, Hi, how are you? Chris? Did you know that
May is National Food Allergy Awareness Month? I do know, now,
there you go. I did not know that, just having
fold a bit I used to do with Chris Myers
on Sports Center at two thirty in the morning back
in the day. But yeah, anyway, so thankfully, Amen, was here. Thankfully,
(36:59):
everybody looked after me. I was fined by Sunday afternoon,
and I'm very careful about what I eat always and
extra careful now.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
NFL schedule release last night. What stood down?
Speaker 9 (37:12):
Hey, You know, you always look for who's in primetime,
and I think with more primetime windows in general, it's
become a little more interesting to see who gets those
extra games. In Kansas City with seven primetime games, so
many games for a team to be in primetime. You
know a lot of the people you'd expect Dallas with six,
Detroit Wathington five, but interesting to see teams like Atlanta
(37:34):
and the Chargers, maybe teams that the folks in the
league think might be good teams that other people aren't
thinking about to see them show up five times in primetime.
I love the fact that we get to open with
Dallas at Philly and then come back with with Josh
Allen against Lamar Jackson in Buffalo to open the season
redo of that playoff game with Baltimore and Buffalo. So
(37:54):
we'll be off and running with the Sunday night schedule
with some good stuff.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Do you read anything into Steelers against the Gents opening week?
Speaker 9 (38:04):
I'm very hopeful that we're reading something into Steelers Packers
in mid October, which look on its own because of
the legacy a both franchises, is a great game, right.
But Man, Aaron Rodgers is back with the Packers. I
was back with the Steelers and playing the Packers for
probably what would be the only time in his career. Man,
(38:26):
that would be something, something incredible. I would be an
incredible scene, would be a special special night for all
of us involved. So we wait and wonder if Aaron's
gonna come back or not. And if he does, that'd
be pretty cool. Do you think he will?
Speaker 4 (38:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (38:41):
Whenever he calls McAfee decides to tell him, I guess
we'll all find out.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (38:46):
My gut is at this point he has to have
a decision in his heart, right because you're starting to
get to that point in May where you're rounding yourself
into physical and mental shape, and the Seiler are good
quarterbacks play away from being more than nine and eight,
ten and seven and getting in and winning some of
(39:08):
those games. I think in that division it gets magnified.
Right when you play Baltimore and you play Cincinnati. You've
got to have that play, and Aaron did show at
the end of the year he can make that play.
So is he willing to be a part of what
they do in Pittsburgh and fit right in. I think
it would be a cool last chapter, So I'm hopeful.
I have no gut feeling at all. I wish I did,
(39:29):
but I don't.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
The Preakness Stakes after the Kentucky Derby and Sovereignty is
not running, And then I wonder, you know this has
happened before, it's not the first time, but is there
a way that they can space this out a little
more so you do get more people, more eyes on this,
and that this stays relevant, stays important to you know,
(39:50):
the sports landscape.
Speaker 9 (39:52):
Thousand percent, Dan, It's pretty easy. You move this race
back around Memorial Day weekend or the weekend before either one,
and then you move the Belmont fourth and July weekend
or the weekend before. You have to react to what's happening.
Nobody in Major League Baseball is using a four man
rotation in the regular season because resting pitchers and resting
(40:15):
your investment less starts has been the way to go.
Horse Racing is the same thing they used to wheel
horses back every two weeks. Now, for the most part,
the best thoroughbridge only run once every four.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Or five six weeks.
Speaker 9 (40:30):
That's the normal window to bring them back on two
weeks to rest from Derby to Preacas never happens during
the year for these horses. So then why are you
taking twenty one plus million people that watch the Kentucky
Derby any momentum you might have built and give the
sports zero chance to build on top of that momentum
with If Sovereign's going for the second lay of the
Triple Crown, maybe it's not Derby day damn well, and
(40:54):
those sports fans would show up at about six o'clock
on Saturday to see Kenny win the second and then
build for the Belmont. The Triple Crown has been around
for one hundred and forty some odd years and you
don't want to mess with tradition.
Speaker 4 (41:04):
I got it.
Speaker 9 (41:06):
But if you can't follow this idea with anything that
works right now in the sport, then we're hurting the sport.
So it would be hoof everyone involved. Problem is, I
see what you did with Anthony be Hoof. Okay, be Hoof, I.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Didn't I didn't thank you That's why I say, the bestie,
what you're doing.
Speaker 9 (41:24):
It would be smart for the sport. And Maryland does
its own thing. Sos Kentucky, so does New York, so
does California, so does Florida. An you talk about college
football needing a commissioner, this sport needs a commissioner.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Have fun this weekend, Be careful what you eat. Thank
you Pal, happy birth, happy birth, Thank you min B,
thank you all the best. Mike Kueriko
