Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
NFL owners meetings going on today and tomorrow. If you
go back to two thousand and five, we had, you know,
language that outlawed the toush push forever, and why they
brought it back I have no idea, and they said
it was hard to adjudicate. I was like, okay, how
(00:25):
about we just come up with language. Can you come
up with language? You know the problem is with the NFL,
they add more language, they don't take it away. And
then all of a sudden you started to hear that, oh,
this is unfair, this isn't a football play. And then
I go, okay, well, which team is going to have
a proposal to get rid of the touschbush And we
(00:46):
found out it was the Green Bay Packers, and we
had Matt Lafleur, the Packers head coach. He joined us
at the draft and we went back and forth on this,
and I think we found out that maybe the Packers
were told to have a proposal to get rid of
the tush push the brother Lee shove that the Packers
(01:08):
came out the guys are at kins. Would you have
liked that to have remained? Anonymous that there's a team
that it.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Is what it is.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
We might have had some nudging towards that, but I'm
not really going to get into that.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Did the commissioner say we need somebody to speak up?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I wouldn't say that because I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Think the commissioner wants this. No can I can I
say what I think happened. Sure, okay, I think the
commissioner nudged you guys to say, look, if you have
a grievance, put your name to it.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
I'll owe you one.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
And because I don't think he wants that play to
stay in the game.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Well, it's not a great football play.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
And then certainly when you look at what happened in
the Washington Commander game where Frankie Loeuver was launching over
the top, which I mean it's a tough play to stop.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
We've actually had more success.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
You had some studies ran We've had more success with
a traditional quarterback sneak than we have with you know
whatever you want to call it, brother show.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I think Philadelphia is still going to be dominating with
the quarterback sneak. I agree because of that line in
that quarterback.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
I mean, they do a great job and I mean
Jalen Hurts can squat the house. So they do a
good job of just you know, winn in the line
of scrimmage. It all starts right there and they get
really low and they've they've perfected it.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Keep in mind that they were going to vote on
this the last time they all got together, and what happened.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
They tabled it.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Well, they tabled it because the commissioner, in my opinion,
didn't have the votes to get rid of the tush
push that's it. And then to say to the packers, hey,
I mean Matte Lafleur's basically saying that. They said, hey,
we're going to nudge you a little bit, put your
name to it, and then you know, maybe down the
(02:59):
road you do a solid for the packers in some way,
shape or form. I don't know if it's quid pro quo,
but hey, you guys are going to take a little
heat because then what happened. All packers can't stop it,
so they want to get rid of it. It feels
like the packers did the NFL a solid and then
put their name to it. I don't know what they
(03:19):
get back, but they got the draft. Maybe you get
another draft in there somewhere down the road. And from
what I was told yesterday that I passed on to
you is you got to simplify the language. That was
almost the homework assignment by the NFL. Now this is
my opinion only from information I have. You know that
(03:41):
I was told, and nobody has backed this up. But
I'm telling you what I was told. Simplify the language,
and then there's a real chance. I don't think that
the NFL doesn't want this play. I don't think the
commissioner wants this play because esthetically it's not a great
looking play and it's very, very predictable. And I stand
(04:03):
by what I said. That offensive line, with that quarterback,
they're still going to be unstoppable when it comes to
quarterback snakes. They are because he can squat six hundred pounds. Okay,
that's unheard of, and he's six feet tall. By the
(04:24):
time he squats down, he goes forward, quarterback sneak with
a little momentum, he's down to about five to five,
and then you're just not going to get low and
stop them. They will still be extremely successful. Here is
the amended rule. It's Rule twelve, Section one, Article four.
By the way, So assisting the runner in interlocking interference,
(04:48):
No offensive player may push or pull a runner in
any direction at any time, or lift him to his feet. Now,
they did take out a paragraph here. It's the paragraph
that said use interlocking interference by grasping a teammate or
by using his hands or arms to encircle the body
(05:10):
of a teammate in an effort to block an opponent.
Or then they kept this in push or throw his
body against a teammate to aid him in an attempt
to obstruct an opponent, or recover a loose ball, or
assist the runner, except by individually blocking opponents for him.
The penalty for doing this is a loss of ten yards.
(05:38):
They're trying to do player safety. The problem is they
don't have the data. If they had the data, then
this would be gone. The problem is that they don't.
So they're worried about player safety, but also pace of
play and the aesthetic. Now, you don't want this to
look like you're singling out the Eagles. That was another
(05:58):
thing I was told. I want to do it in
a way that feels like it's the league as a whole,
not the Eagles.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
Well, we all know it's the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
I mean even the Buffalo Bills with his second best
at doing this, and what happened in the most important
quarterback sneak of their season. Josh Allen got stopped. But
that goes back to what I'm saying. Josh Allen is,
you know, six' five two. Forty But Jalen hurts with
trying to get this play and be, successful is built
(06:29):
for this.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Play Josh allen isn't because he's almost too big of a.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Target Jalen hurts will still be, successful and so with
The eagles with this. Play but that's going to be
a big topic And Albert burer will join us from
the owner's. Meetings but why they allowed this to come?
BACK i still think there's a simple simplification. Here you're
not allowed to be behind the runner and assists the, runner.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
Period that's.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
It if you put yourself from that, position we're going
to flag you on. It you just know that it's
a no, no that's. It or if you want to
say anything that is inside the tackles the tackle, box
you cannot assist a runner if you want to do
it that. Way BUT i would still just say you
(07:18):
cannot assist a runner you can't, push you can't, pull
you can't.
Speaker 5 (07:22):
Assist that's it. Done and then you let teams.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Know you, know you can't crack back block anymore on
a punt or a kickoff.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
Return they know, it so you don't do.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
It you can't put your, Hands you can't have a
three hundred pound lineman Behind Jalen, hurts you can't Have
Dallas goddard there pushing him from. Behind you can't do.
It that's all you need to. Say can't line up that.
Way it's a quarterback. Sneak you. Know the interesting part
Is Tom brady was as good at the quarterback sneak
(07:57):
as any quarterback in. History And tom's not an imposing,
guy not a big, guy not necessarily a great offensive,
line but he was so strategic and where he went
either left or, right off the center or straight.
Speaker 5 (08:10):
Ahead but this is.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Different you, know the, optics the aesthetics of it don't
look good because it looks like a. Scrum it looks like.
RUGBY i don't have any problem with. It they figured out,
something they mastered. It everybody else has the same opportunity
to do, it and you know, what nobody else has come.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
Close.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Now it feels like THE nfl is saying we're going
to do this and penalize The Philadelphia.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
Eagles BUT i.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Think they're going to get rid of, it because that's
why they tabled it in the first.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
Place chris And. Syracuse, Hi, chris what's on your mind?
Speaker 6 (08:47):
Today?
Speaker 7 (08:48):
Hey thank?
Speaker 8 (08:49):
You?
Speaker 7 (08:49):
Dan, HEY i wanted to get in AND i just
wanted to make sure to wish you guys good luck.
Tonight AND i think you're going to get off the
snide lucky number, sleven make that, Seven so good. Luck
so long as you're talking about the push push a couple,
COMMENTS i totally agree with. You you, know the commissioner
has come out and he says there's no, data but
their doctors feel that there's a high probability of catastrophic
(09:11):
injury on the. Play, now you could say that on
any play in THE, Nfl AND i think you're. Right
he wants it. Out he thinks it's a boring play
and he'd much rather have teams on third and one
and fourth and one go play action or. Something and,
again to your, Point philly's not going to miss a.
BEAT i read something where three or four years ago
they did a survey back or a study back to
nineteen eighty five where third and one and fourth and
(09:34):
ONE qb sneaks are successful eighty eight percent of the.
Time and as you said With Jalen, hurts that they're
going to they won't miss a. Beat And, dan it's
funny WHENEVER i hear the term push, PUSH i don't know.
WHY i always think of The Ice bowl when Bart
starr on fourth and goal at the one won the
championship by A qb. Sneak AND i Saw Jim taylor
(09:56):
once had a. Documentary he was narrating it and he'd
point it out that the first three times he got
the ball on the one and because of the, ice
he could not get. In he couldn't get. Footing So
bartstar figured out was falling and get it and he
won the. Championship And Jim taylor Said Vince lombardi and
Bart starr were the only two that knew it was
going to be quarterback. Sneak everybody Thought taylor was going
to get the ball, again including, him and he said
(10:19):
he was going full. Board his momentum took him right
Into bartstar's. Button he couldn't stop because of the. Ice
and he said that iconic photo Of taylor with his
hands up in the. Air everybody thought he was signaling
touchdown he won the, championship but he was saying he
wanted the official to know because he knew would be a.
PENALTY i am not pushing them. In there is no
(10:39):
push push.
Speaker 5 (10:40):
Here thank, You, Chris andrew And. Washington Hi, andrew.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Good, Morning.
Speaker 9 (10:47):
Daandnnett thanks for taking my. Call good luck tonight as.
WELL i do think this is lucky number seven for,
you so you guys will be walking away with trophy too.
Common you know yesterday you Said giannest to The Cleveland.
CALVES i agree with. THAT i just think that he
might be better with A Darius garland complimentary guard sor
Like Drew, holiday instead of A Donovan, Mitchell Dane lillard
(11:10):
type of guard where they're more ball. DOMINANT i think
that would be a very successful team that could get
rid Of Jared, allen, Keep Evan, Mobley Darius, garland And Joannis.
Antetokumpo also, yesterday thanks for Having tony really. On that
guy is so great AND i can't believe that that
show is getting. Canceled i've grown up with. IT i love,
it BUT i do think he should be in the
leader spot for continuing your show if it does continue
(11:34):
after you in the man. CAVE i think he would
be the best at being able to Manage daniete get
all of the subjects in. There he has a wide.
Variety he has very many connections to get guests in
there and have different people come on the. Show just
wanted to put that.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
Forward all, Right, well thank, You.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Andrew i'd be honored if he wanted to do. THIS
i think he aspires to do other. Things but maybe
we Have tony reality guest host one. TIME i think
he'd be great age seven seven to THREE dp. Show
by the, WAY i think we're oh for. Five this
would be oh for six if we.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
Lost is? That DO i have my math correct on this?
Speaker 10 (12:11):
BALL i think you're. Right we went oh for five
in a row and then took a couple of years
off to, regroup and now we're.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
Back, okay this would be our sixth. Nomination, okay all,
right we're.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Due yeah we're. Due you, guys don't look, Confident, Satan we're, due, right, heck,
yeah we're. Due we're overdue for. Sure and And todd wants,
okay this was a suggestion once, again just a. Suggestion
(12:43):
todd was, thinking what if he did a Sports emmy
acceptance speech as a, limerick.
Speaker 6 (12:49):
Or we can read it.
Speaker 11 (12:50):
Together, well we just take one, line five, lines that
would be. Perfect we do one line of the.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
Limerick do you have a?
Speaker 2 (12:56):
LIMERICK i kind of, do, ready so a lot of.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
Thought, NO i.
Speaker 6 (13:01):
Literally wrote it five.
Speaker 11 (13:02):
Minutes like we're talking about, this we're talking about how
what kind of speech we.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Will, okay well we're not going to do a, limerick
BUT i will let, you you, know read the limers.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
Humor, YES i.
Speaker 11 (13:11):
Will having gone over five caused some. Harm anxious for
your name to be called sweaty, palm they, say just
getting nominated as an. Honor but that's, crap right seating.
O'Connor look at us, now the six times a. Charm,
okay it's a little limerick for the sport.
Speaker 5 (13:28):
Time we thank? You actual. Sound that's that's the audience.
Tonight that's a little.
Speaker 11 (13:35):
Lick, yeah a couple of seconds of content moving.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
On, no thank, No i'm fine with. It i'm. Fine
we workshop this nothing.
Speaker 6 (13:44):
Scripted look at us, now the sixth.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
TIMES i got, IT i got, IT i got. It
fossis got. It what's the hour one poll? Question i'm
so glad that you? Asked so glad Was Todd's? Limerick
WELL JK.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Jk by the, WAY i have The, DraftKings nba title,
Odds thunder are the big. Favorites then it's The knicks
And timberwolves and The pacers kind of bunched. Together they're
Timb wolves by seven and a, half getting seven and
a half against The, thunder and The knicks will be
giving four and a half In game one against The.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
Pacers, okay yes, see.
Speaker 12 (14:23):
Would you rather be the best middle linebacker or the
tenth best?
Speaker 5 (14:26):
Quarterback right?
Speaker 12 (14:27):
Now the best middle linebackers running away with that, one
BUT i think that will change. Soon we also put
up there a random one THAT i. Had when you hear,
oilers you think of a football team or a hockey.
Team right, now football team's got sixty percent of that. Vote,
okay that'll, change. TIM i did love The Houston. Oilers
they were a fun. Team Bum, Phillips Earl campbell and
(14:50):
he Had Warren, Moon Ernest, Gibbons, yes Marm, jeffries, yeah Heywood.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
Jefferies was he out of LIKE Nc? State something like? That,
Yes Tom.
Speaker 11 (15:00):
Kenny burrow And Curly culp And, pastorini all those guys so.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
Much Dante.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Pastorini, Dante, Yeah Dan, Pastorini Dante. Pastorini let me see
walk In. Chicago, Hey, walk what's on your mind?
Speaker 5 (15:16):
Today?
Speaker 8 (15:17):
Hey look's?
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Up.
Speaker 9 (15:18):
Dan i'm just, wondering if THE nfl were to adopt
your idea on the.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
Whole tush push, thing would you make the play?
Speaker 8 (15:26):
Reviewable?
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Sure ALL i care about, is you, know we talk
about reviewable. Now it used to be instant, replay and
then it you, know it became anything but. Instant now
it's replay now it's. Reviewable like we keep changing the.
LANGUAGE i want the game to move at a steady.
PACE i watch, it you, KNOW nba sometimes those final
(15:52):
five minutes it's just. Interminable it's, just oh my, gosh
let's speed this. Up but with THE, nfl if you
if you have the, technology don't have the. Technology if
you're not using the technology and the time in between,
plays can you have you, know five sets of eyes
at THE nfl home office that, says, oh you know,
(16:13):
what not a? Penalty oh? Penalty like why does it
take so long to come up with whatever your opinion
is on, This but, yeah if you want to review,
it but do it in a timely, manner it should
be you, know they should have a clock on. That
this is the amount of time the officials and THE
nfl get to use to review something because after a,
(16:37):
while it's, like you, know you want to see, another you,
know another and, another and now you're slowing down the
pace of. Play it's still this is. Entertainment you want
to make sure if you're taking away something that's esthetically,
boring like the tush, push THEN i think you got
to apply that same kind of logic that every other,
(16:58):
play like let's speed this, up let's get this, moving
let's make the call. Here you want to review, it do,
it maybe not in an, instant but do it in
a timely.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
Fashion, Yes, PAULINE.
Speaker 10 (17:09):
I saw an article From Sports Business journal a few
years ago about this. Topic why is there not a
clock on? Replay and they didn't want to be hamstrung
and if they got into a situation where a playoff
game where they weren't sure and they had to take
multiple looks at, it and they didn't want to be
limited with a. Clock that was a long time. Ago
mane it's the only THING i saw.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Because we get to see these replays and then it
feels like there's another wave of replays. There but, yeah
in a timely. Fashion, yes if it means you can
get the play, right then get the play right or
don't use.
Speaker 5 (17:45):
It make up your.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Mind you can't sort of, go, hey you, know we
got all these angles. Here remember for YEARS i kept,
saying they got to use, pylon they got to put
a camera in the, pylon like it just made. Sense,
therefore you had that camera right at the goal line
and you'd get unbelievable. Angles and it took years for
them to finally and maybe they couldn't, find you, know
a camera that was going to fit in and durable
(18:08):
and all those. Things now we just take it for.
GRANTED i, mean we take it for granted that it's
going to take a while to render an opinion on a.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
Play you.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Know it's just, like get the batter in the batter's,
box like we allowed it for such a long period of.
Time it's, like, yeah you, know you gotta step out
and adjust and then, okay and then step out and,
no get in the batter's.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
Box let's.

Rich Albert breers The monday morning, quarterback but he works every,
morning Including, tuesdays and he joins us now the SENIOR nfl. Reporter,
okay what's the headline? Today what's the headline going to
be coming out of the owner's.
Speaker 6 (19:51):
Meetings, well today it's going to be The.
Speaker 14 (19:53):
Olympics tomorrow it'll be what happens with the toush push
and playoff. SEATING i think the thing is gonna sail,
through AND i think that there's a lot of big
picture things that the owners are thinking about.
Speaker 6 (20:06):
There you, know as you Know, dan like football is
a tough sport to.
Speaker 14 (20:10):
Export you, know if you're trying to get kids overseas,
playing and you, know it's not like basketball or soccer
where you can just set up a couple of goals
or a couple of hoops.
Speaker 6 (20:19):
And roll out the balls and and and and teach.
Speaker 14 (20:22):
Kids there's a lot of infrastructure that goes into building
it up and trying to legitimize flag football has been
the NFL's way of trying to get around, that and you,
know they're trying to make it.
Speaker 6 (20:33):
A vrsity sport and high schools.
Speaker 14 (20:36):
Here it's a way to engage young girls and try
to get them. Involved and and you, know obviously now
overseas is a lot easier to bring the flag version
than the tackle version. Overseas so that's an initiative that's
that's been a long standing one for the. League AND
i think they're probably gonna vote, things so it'll get
interesting when we figure out who actually would. Go BUT
(20:57):
i think they'll vote that through today and then to
The tush push is going to be voted, on AND
i think that that. One The commissioner of The league
office really want to get that. Through whether or not
it winds up winning the, VOTE i think is up
in the. Air my guess would be they pushed something,
through but they have adjusted. That The packers proposal has
(21:18):
been significantly adjusted over the last twenty four. Hours and
then and then you have the playoff seating, thing which
at least feels to me right now like more of
a they're setting the stage for twenty twenty. SIX i
don't know that after only having a handful of teams
supporting it In march that they're going to.
Speaker 6 (21:35):
Be able to vote that through.
Speaker 5 (21:36):
Tomorrow what role do The eagles play in the tush.
Speaker 14 (21:40):
Push they've been pretty aggressive and.
Speaker 6 (21:46):
Fighting, it you.
Speaker 14 (21:47):
KNOW I Howie roseman stood up at the owners meeting
In march and basically said, that, well, like if you
say this is such a dangerous, PLAY i want to
see the injury, data and there really isn't injury.
Speaker 6 (21:58):
Data and what the.
Speaker 14 (21:59):
Chief meta officer THE nfl said to the room, was
we haven't had major, injuries but when we have one
based on the posture of the quarterback on this.
Speaker 6 (22:07):
Play it's going to be.
Speaker 14 (22:08):
Catastrophic and it's interesting because that's one, argument and then
teams that are for banning, it it's a different.
Speaker 6 (22:17):
Argument it's it's not a football, play it's a rugby. Play, so.
Speaker 14 (22:22):
You, know like The eagles have been steadfast and feeling
like they're being targeted here and feeling like this is
only an issue because they've gotten so good at, it
and they think it's a bad precedent for the league
to set when one team gets really good at one
thing and it's deemed unfair that now you, can you,
know find a way to get it taken out of the.
(22:42):
Game at the same, time if you go back to
two thousand and, four there was a rule in the
books that prevented all pushing and pulling of offensive, teammates
and that got repealed for reasons that had nothing to
do with What philly's. Doing the reason why was because
downfield blocks have become harder to officiate and delineating whether or,
(23:04):
not you, know an offensive player was blocking a defender
or pushing his own teammate, across you, know aligned to
gain the goal line.
Speaker 6 (23:12):
Whatever so it's. Complicated there's a lot that's going into.
Speaker 7 (23:16):
It.
Speaker 14 (23:16):
Again The eagles were vocal In, march and they've certainly you,
know been on the phones over the last few days
too and trying to make their case to other teams
that'll be voting.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Tomorrow let me go back to The, olympics BECAUSE i
said THAT i get what THE nfl. Wants they want,
expansion and they're not going to do expansion where you're
playing pro football around the country or around the world
and HAVING nfl teams in different. Cities how you grow,
Football you grow football with flag football because all you
need is really a. Football then you, know a field
(23:46):
to play. On they want to compete with, soccer you, know,
globally they want to compete with. Basketball globally you get
boys and girls. Playing i'm all for all of, that varsity,
sport all for. THAT i just don't get the gimmick
of we got one player who will represent TEAM, usa
who's AN nfl player who.
Speaker 14 (24:08):
Cares, Yeah AND i don't, KNOW i, mean And I'm
i'm skeptical that it's gonna even like work that.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
Way CAN i tell you a personal story having this one?
Day and? Sure, so back WHEN i was in college
At Ohio.
Speaker 14 (24:21):
State we were in a fraternity league and we had
a bunch of us played high school, football and we
wound up winning our fraternity, league, Right and we won
our fraternity league by playing you, know like we're running football.
Plays so then you, know we kind of like we're, like,
well what? Happened what would happen if we entered this
Like Nike elite?
Speaker 6 (24:38):
League? Right and so we got our freaking doors blown
off playing in This Nike elite.
Speaker 14 (24:44):
League and what we found out and doing that was
like like this flag, League like it wasn't like, Football
it was a different sport. Altogether there were laterals and
pitches and it was and it had nothing to do with.
Size and it's just like it like it's a it's
a different thing altogether if you're really doing. It so you,
(25:04):
know LIKE i understand the concept of PUTTING nfl players out,
THERE i just wonder if the juice is worth the,
squeeze you know WHAT i, Mean, Like, okay so you
get a little more attention on it by PUTTING nfl
players out, there but are they the best players in the.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
World it's that specific.
Speaker 14 (25:22):
Thing if you're giving people five years to train for,
this are you saying like AN nfl player will be ready.
Speaker 6 (25:29):
In a month to go and.
Speaker 14 (25:31):
Compete and If i'm a, team LIKE i look at
that and, say, like that's when a guy's getting ready
for a training. Camp so instead of you, know getting
ready for the riggers of AN nfl, season he's going
to be doing something completely different than preparing for tackle.
FOOTBALL I it's just it's complicated for all of those.
Reasons AND i think the risk here would be are
(25:53):
you just turning this.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
Into a freak? Show you know WHAT i?
Speaker 14 (25:55):
Mean like it's just like, okay like come watch the
come watch the two hundred fifty pounds tight, end go
out and and play against a bunch of one hundred
and eighty pound guys From.
Speaker 6 (26:07):
France you know WHAT i, Mean, like is that what
we're doing?
Speaker 14 (26:09):
Here and is that good for the long term viability
of flag football as a?
Speaker 6 (26:14):
SPORT i don't.
Speaker 14 (26:15):
KNOW i think those are all questions that are, worthy
AND i don't know one way or the. Other i'm
not SAYING i have all the, answers BUT i think
those are all viable.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Questions Talking Albert breer The monday morning quarterback joining us
from the owners, meetings The rock party, contract a lot
of times we get the final number and we go,
wow but then you break it down and you get guaranteed.
MONEY i know there's no trade clause in. There what
was the strategy on both sides here to get to this?
Speaker 14 (26:39):
Number SO i think there were there were three clamps
that they were working off, of you, know because the
one thing that The niners established right away is we're
not going to be breaking records, here like that's that.
Speaker 6 (26:52):
Can't be the goal of this.
Speaker 14 (26:53):
Negotiation and, so you, know party side then basically came
back at them and, said, okay well then we need strong.
Guarants we need strong, structure you, know as a guy
who was once mister, irrelevant and you know with The
niners history of being able to win with different, QUARTERBACKS
i think what what Brock perdy really wanted here was, affirmation,
like you, know this contract shows That i'm going to
(27:15):
be your guy for the foreseeable future and there aren't
like all these trap doors that will allow for you
to get out of the. Contract and, so you, know
the three comps that they had worked off of Were
Jalen hurts TWO a tongue Of, aloa And Jared. Goff
AND i think the one that they came closest with Was.
Goff where you, have you, know a team that's a
(27:36):
winning team In, detroit where you have a quarterback who's
a really good, player who's got a lot of good
players around, him and you, know the quarterback in that,
Case Jared goff in that case wasn't consumed without getting
every taking.
Speaker 6 (27:51):
Every dollar off the.
Speaker 14 (27:52):
Table but you, know he wanted to know that he
was going to be The lions quarterback going. Forward and
SO i think that those were the CONSTANT i think
when you look at, it you, know when the full
details come, out we'll. See my sense is that like
about one hundred and seventy six million is going to
be virtually, guaranteed and this contract will reflect you can
(28:15):
bank on Broad party being the quarterback for the next four,
years so twenty twenty five through twenty twenty. Eight so
The niners do a deal that in this environment is
reasonable at at at fifty three million dollars per, year
And party gets.
Speaker 6 (28:30):
His assurances that he's going to be their guy going.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
Forward should we extract anything more than what we probably
already have With Caleb williams and his father and the
story that's coming out that they were going to try
to blow up the draft because he didn't want to
go to The Chicago.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
Bears, yeah two.
Speaker 14 (28:47):
Things Number, ONE i would say it's a tough look
For mattybraflus And Shane waldron and the guys who were
on the staff last. YEAR i mean that it just
it sucks BECAUSE i think for those, guys they're going
to have to answer those questions, now, like, yeah if
they have to interview for another, job what do you
think the first question is going to, be you mean
you didn't we didn't have your quarterback learning how to
watch film what was going on, there you, know so.
Speaker 6 (29:09):
There could be some effect.
Speaker 14 (29:10):
THERE i don't think it's gonna have an effect in
the new staff Because Ben johnson wasn't.
Speaker 6 (29:13):
There for that, obviously you.
Speaker 14 (29:16):
Know and then the second piece of, IT i think
it's just kind of where we're at with pro athletes right.
Now AND i think it's notable too because we talked
about this With Marvin harrison last, year right, like And
Marvin harrison handled his pre draft process so differently than
almost any other athlete we've, seen and that he very
much limited the teams he was he was gonna he
was he was he was going to meet with extensively
(29:39):
beyond just the. Combine he didn't take a physical at the,
combine which was you, know a little out of, whack
right like as far as a lot OF nfl people saw.
It but he's, like If i'm going to be a
top five, pick why DO i want to give the
other twenty seven teams my medical?
Speaker 6 (29:55):
Information and then you, know.
Speaker 14 (29:57):
He he also like did work out for the larger,
group so and he had asked teams like do you
need me to work?
Speaker 6 (30:06):
Out and they said no to.
Speaker 14 (30:06):
Him and really the overarching thing With marvin there was
he handled the entire thing like a business. Proposition why
is that relevant With marvin And Caleb, Williams, well because they.
Speaker 6 (30:16):
Were the first high school class to enter college in
THE nil.
Speaker 14 (30:19):
Era so these guys have legitimately been businessmen since they
were eighteen years.
Speaker 6 (30:24):
Old it's the first group.
Speaker 14 (30:26):
That came out of high school into THE nil. ERA
i thought that was notable With, marvin AND i think
it's notable here With. Caleb caleb asked these big picture
questions that guys, ten, fifteen twenty years ago may not have.
Asked AND i think it's part of what this generation
of athlete is going to.
Speaker 6 (30:41):
Be they're entering the league with money in.
Speaker 14 (30:43):
Their, pocket they have some leverage because of, it and they've,
had you, know the chance to kind of write their
ticket right up until they entered THE. Nfl and, so you,
KNOW i think For caleb it was kind of what
we've seen about him resisting going To chicago was part
of a bigger picture, thing which Is i'm Handling i'm
(31:03):
handling my business affairs like their business, affairs like this
is these this is this is big, business And i'm
going to treat it as. Such and you, know and
even though he didn't go through with, it the fact
that he just explored, IT i think as a precursor
to more guys handling their pre draft process this way
because they're more prepared to based on what they went
through in.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Collllege, well how surprised are you that somebody hasn't pulled
In Eli?
Speaker 6 (31:26):
Manning IT'S i, mean it's, yeah it's. Surprising but, like
how many guys really have the leverage to do? It
you know WHAT i? Mean like how many guys are that?
Speaker 14 (31:36):
LEVEL i, Mean caleb was seen as on the level
Of Trevor lawrence And Andrew luck and that's probably, it you,
know over the last twenty, Years so there aren't a
ton of guys who have the leverage to pull it.
Speaker 5 (31:47):
Off what about Arch?
Speaker 14 (31:50):
Manning he, might, YEAH i mean like and we'll, see right,
like BECAUSE i don't know If arche is going to
come out like after next.
Speaker 6 (31:57):
YEAR i think you AND I.
Speaker 14 (31:59):
I think you'd agree with me, this Right, like based
on the family, HISTORY i think he's probably gonna spend
at least two more years At.
Speaker 6 (32:03):
Texas it would be my.
Speaker 14 (32:04):
Guess but, YEAH i, mean like he certainly could do.
That you, know like, where but he's going.
Speaker 5 (32:10):
To get an idea where he could go if he used.
Speaker 6 (32:13):
He's got to, play well obviously that's established. Effort, yeah,
yeah he's.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
Got but let's say The saints are right there with
the number one, pick, right would then, that you, know
help him with his decision that maybe there is a
best case SCENARIO i would come out to play for my.
Hometown if, not Then i'm going to stay and play
one more.
Speaker 6 (32:32):
YEAR i, mean well that's What peyton, did Right Because,
PEYTON i Mean.
Speaker 5 (32:36):
Peyton was going to The, Jets.
Speaker 14 (32:38):
Yes, yeah With parcels, there and he decided not to do, it,
Right like so LIKE i Think peyton HAD i would
Argue peyton had that sort of decision on the table
in nineteen ninety seven when he decided to go back To.
Speaker 6 (32:48):
TENNESSEE i mean it's that's the ultimate sliding to our.
Speaker 14 (32:51):
Situation like like, scenario by the, Way like what would
have Happened Peyton anning went to The? Jets like then
Does Bill belichick stay In New?
Speaker 6 (32:59):
York you know WHAT i?
Speaker 14 (33:00):
Mean like because he was lined up to Be parcel's,
Successor like how many things are different If Peyton manning
comes out in ninety.
Speaker 6 (33:06):
Seven but, YEAH i MEAN i think.
Speaker 14 (33:07):
That like he'll CERTAINLY i would think based on how
everything's been handled over the years with that, family that
they will weigh.
Speaker 6 (33:17):
Everything.
Speaker 14 (33:17):
NOW i think that the interesting part about the decision
That arts would have to make if he plays.
Speaker 6 (33:23):
At that level this year.
Speaker 14 (33:26):
Would be the history of quarterbacks that only start one
year is not very. Good you, know only start one
year as. Collegians there's, this there's, This some teams look
at it as like, this like this threshold that you
have to get past is twenty five, starts, Right you
want to have twenty five starts in, College and the
history of guys who have more than twenty five starts
is much better than guys who.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
Don't you, Know arch isn't going to be there at
the end of this. Year he'll be sure to that
at the end of this.
Speaker 14 (33:52):
Year so how beneficial does the, Situation how good does
the situation that THE nfl team's presenting that has the
number one pick if he plays that, Well how good
does that situation have to be to supersede what might
statistically be best for his. DEVELOPMENT i think those are
the sorts of questions you'd be asking AND i think
they'd be asking those questions.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Too when do you think we'll get clarity on what
The Cleveland browns are doing at?
Speaker 5 (34:14):
QUARTERBACK i have.
Speaker 14 (34:19):
To think it's going to be hard for them to
run a four man competition in camp because you have
to get the rest of your team ready because of the.
Rules there's only so many opportunities you get with your
first offense out. There you've got to prepare the other
ten guys in the huddle to play, football to play
offense in twenty twenty, five and so you can't just
endlessly have this quarterback derby going. On SO i would
(34:42):
think my guess would be they have to at least
get a read on it over the course of the
next five, weeks six weeks and OTAs in mini camp
and allow that to sort of guide them as far
as how good a shot every one of those guys
has it winning the job when we get to the,
summer where it's, like at least in the heads narrowed
down a little, bit where they're giving the best opportunities
(35:03):
to the guys who have proven themselves the.
Speaker 6 (35:05):
Most so you, know.
Speaker 14 (35:06):
It's funny, too BECAUSE i thought about this and, like
it's like, Well Joe flacco could just because he was
there two years. Ago he could just you, know give
up some of the reps so the other guys could get.
It do you Think joe's going to sign up for, That, Dan,
LIKE i, mean like he wants to, start you. Know
so it's Like Tommy reese is the offensive. Coordinator he
wasn't there two years. Ago so do you if You're,
joe do you want to Give Kenny pickett And Dylan
(35:28):
gabriel And shade Or sanders all of these reps with
the new coordinator that you're not Getting that might give
them a leg up in the, competition which could end
up like could like wind.
Speaker 6 (35:38):
Up leading to you losing your.
Speaker 14 (35:39):
Job, LIKE i don't see that that being, LIKE i
don't see that being the best course of action For
Joe flacco. Either so it's definitely complicated in a lot
of different. Ways AND i do think more so than
in a normal compet quarterback, competition because there are four of.
Them they have to get a read on this and
have to have an idea of what the pecking were
(36:00):
or might be coming out of the. Spring and THEN
i would think you probably are on the second or
third preseason, game are making a decision on your.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
Starter one final thought here with The Aaron rodgers, situation
it feels like there's people that are talking around the
topic Of aaron playing for The Pittsburgh.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
Steelers, yeah your sense is what.
Speaker 6 (36:23):
Talking around in what way that you, know, hey.
Speaker 5 (36:25):
They could see him.
Speaker 2 (36:26):
Playing there's no news here that maybe he's got some
personal things he needs to take CARE i, mean he
didn't want to go to, camp you, know hit something.
Speaker 6 (36:36):
Else so so.
Speaker 14 (36:38):
Yeah so give, me, like let me give you the
logic on this like, That, LIKE i, LIKE i Think
i've been able to ascertain based on some STUFF i
know and then some Stuff i'm projecting.
Speaker 6 (36:46):
Out a little.
Speaker 14 (36:47):
Bit LIKE i, LIKE i think the personal stuff is.
LEGITIMATE i would.
Speaker 6 (36:52):
Say we should all respect, that of. Course AND i
think the second piece of that is.
Speaker 14 (37:00):
If you sign him In, April if you sign him
on The april first and you, say, Okay, aaron you
go take care of your personal, stuff, well you, know
then you've basically signed up for the entire, spring both
you And aaron being overcome with whnes he's showing up
on's he's showing, up when's he's showing? Up get to
the off season, program Where's? Aaron Where's? Aaron Where's? Aaron
then that starts again when you Start OTA's it starts
again when you get to mini.
Speaker 6 (37:20):
Camp and so do you want.
Speaker 14 (37:22):
To sign up for that where it's just hovering over
your team or do you say, okay like you go,
ahead you take care of your personal, stuff and we'll
push the deal over the goal line when you're. READY
i think that's sort of the attack that The steelers have.
Taken is there a risk? Involved, yeah he could change his,
mind you know WHAT i, Mean or there could be
an injury somewhere or you, know who. Knows BUT i
(37:45):
don't think like the contract's going to be an. ISSUE
i don't think the. RELATIONSHIP i don't know if there's any issue. There,
LIKE i think all that stuff's taken care, of you,
know and now it's just when When aaron's ready to,
sign and you, KNOW i think he'll be A.
Speaker 6 (37:58):
Steeler we'll see what.
Speaker 5 (37:59):
Happens play nice there at the owners. Meeting, Okay i'll.
Speaker 6 (38:02):
Try i'll try my.
Speaker 14 (38:03):
Best Sometimes i'm not good at, that But i'll try
and try and do.
Speaker 6 (38:07):
It for, You, dan how about?
Speaker 5 (38:07):
That have you been yelling at an owner recently.
Speaker 14 (38:11):
Recently, normally, normally when an owner's pissed at, me it
comes to some sort of.
Speaker 6 (38:18):
Conduit it happened in the. Fall it happened in the.
Speaker 14 (38:22):
Fall somebody wasn't wasn't very happy with there Were it
was actually like a couple people came at me for
my portrayal of an. Owner but it wound Up i'll
just say it wound up all being. True and you
know WHAT i find in these, Situations, dan is that
they get upset you in the moment and then give
it a few months and fillip.
Speaker 8 (38:42):
Me you were.
Speaker 5 (38:42):
Right so it was The. Patriots Huh it wasn't The.
Speaker 6 (38:46):
Patriots you might have the conference right.
Speaker 5 (38:48):
Though there you, Go, okay fair? Enough could be The.
Jets never, know good The. Jets he's A monday morning.
Quarterback thank you at?
Speaker 14 (38:58):
All?
Speaker 6 (38:58):
Right Thanks.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
Dan be sure to catch the live edition Of The
Dan Patrick show weekdays at nine Am eastern six Am
pacific On Fox Sports radio and The iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
APP i got a text last night from The voice Of,
indianapolis the self Proclaimed voice Of, Indianapolis Dan, dokich host
Of don't At me podcast on, amtkick former college head,
coach played and starred Under Bobby knight At. Indiana so
you send me the, text all, right tell me why
The pacer is gonna win in?
Speaker 5 (39:30):
Six?
Speaker 14 (39:32):
HI?
Speaker 8 (39:32):
Dp, WELL i like The. Pacers you know WHY i
like The, PACERS.
Speaker 15 (39:36):
Dp they moved the, basketball they move, people they moved the.
Ball they've got a stud late. GAME i know you
Have reggie on all the, time And i'm glad he's
on the. Call halliburton reminds me Of reggie in a
lot of. Ways they look. ALIKE i, mean both, slim,
slender kind of funky jump shots and go in all the.
Time but big d the biggest. Reason he ain't afraid
(39:58):
of the Clutch. Man it's two clutters, Dudes brunson Against. Haliburton.
Leighton halliburton is not. Afraid brunson is not. Afraid PACER's
got a good. Team carlisle is a great, coach and
they're just. Better the better team right?
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Now, well The knicks were pretty impressive this past, series, Right.
Speaker 8 (40:17):
BUT i think that's they're.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
Terrific but are you factoring in the fact That tatum
got hurt and they they would Have do you think
they would have beaten The celtics If tatum was still
playing and was, HELPING i do, OKAY.
Speaker 15 (40:27):
I DO i think something was off with The celtics,
DP i DO i think something was. OFF i think
that The celtics weren't The celtics of last. Year LOOK
i like The knicks and last year really doesn't Matter
pacers versus The.
Speaker 8 (40:39):
CELTICS i mean and a obay.
Speaker 15 (40:42):
Uh The indianagrad by the, way has become a fantastic
four way. Player you, know you want to post, up
you want to, rebound you want to, run you want
to score in half, court you want to score it.
Four it doesn't. Matter he's just to become a really good.
Player him played last. Year hartenstein was very good last.
YEAR i looked For Miles turn to have a terrific.
UH i just think The pacers are one of those
Teams dan that you, know how you start out and
(41:06):
you go through. Crap they were, Lousy halliburton wasn't gardened
a lot of. Questions Even halliburton questioned. Himself and then
you come through hard. Times and when you come through
hard times and either breaks or makeshi and The pacers
are good. Man they are, Tough they're. Resilient this is
a much better pacer. TEAM i know it's a better
nick team than last, year but it's a better pacer
(41:27):
team than last year.
Speaker 8 (41:28):
Too and the other guy is this.
Speaker 15 (41:30):
Siaka my favorite all time player Was Bob love number,
Ten Chicago bullswart my whole, life and he And Bobby
dandridge are The bucks used to face off and that's
what got that fade away the mid. RANGE i love
watching this, guy and they're just really. Good they're just
really well coached and really good in a much better
(41:50):
team this year than Last.
Speaker 5 (41:52):
Tyree's halliburton's dad allowed back to.
Speaker 15 (41:55):
Watch, no BUT i wish he, WAS i. DO i
know what he did was, stupid BUT i wish he.
WAS i, mean, okay you acted like a. Dumbass you
took advantage, of you, know the PACER's. Kindness you, KNOW
i was, saying no good deed goes. Unpunished pacers gave
him those. Seats he screwed it, up all, RIGHT i
(42:16):
wish he.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
Was.
Speaker 15 (42:17):
No, apparently unless there's been a you, know something done
without an, Announcement John halliburton won't be able to watch.
Enough all, right let's, Go let's let him back in
The Bill halliburton you ever talked to. Him i'm sure you.
Have he is a great. Dude, like all, right his
dad did what he. Did maybe his dad's a pain
in the, ass, fine But halliburton's a great.
Speaker 8 (42:36):
Dude let the dad in to watch the. Game oh why?
Speaker 2 (42:40):
Not how Does halliburton get voted most overrated player by
the players in THE nba during the regular, Season.
Speaker 8 (42:48):
DAN i was told it wasn't by the.
Speaker 15 (42:49):
PLAYERS i was told it was by somebody each each
organization had a. Vote that could be wrong about. That,
no that one was the. Players the executive. Wasn't wasn't the.
Players that Was you don't. Know but if you look
on that, list a pretty good, List, DAN i, Mean
lebron's on that.
Speaker 8 (43:05):
List giannis is on that. LIST i mean you know
WHAT i, mean he is Like.
Speaker 15 (43:10):
Dato that's a pretty good list to be. On he
just happened to be the, king you. KNOW i like about.
Speaker 8 (43:16):
Him you, know he's like your, Guy.
Speaker 15 (43:18):
Reggie, reggie by the, Way reggie kicked my ass my
last college game in The Garden, Ucla indiana N. Championship
So i've always Admired reggie and his. Ability were, him,
Yeah knight would play.
Speaker 8 (43:33):
Me he was mad at me AND i would play
the second. Half we Beat. Tennessee put me in the second.
Speaker 15 (43:38):
HALF i Reguard Johnny, newman a longtime pro Against Richmond
night was. MAD i played a second, half came out Against.
Reggie we had, THIS i told you this. Before we
had this clown assistant coach Named Con smith who told
us to play Off, reggie Playoff reggie and Front Gary.
Speaker 8 (43:55):
Mlanson you didn't even know Who Gary mullanson.
Speaker 5 (43:58):
Is you're supposed to Let Reggie miller?
Speaker 16 (44:02):
Shoot, yes, yes, Bigded hey that Was and then NIGHT
i see over, There knight's taking me, out SO i drive,
it try to get follow him, out And i'm standing
there during the time out And Nancy, Knight knight's wife
IS mf and me my mother can hear?
Speaker 8 (44:21):
It?
Speaker 6 (44:21):
Dan my?
Speaker 8 (44:22):
Mother she's, like Docis you're the WORST mfn. Leader And i'm,
like wait a.
Speaker 15 (44:27):
Second your staff told me to Let Reggie miller shoot
and Guard Gary.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
Malonson, hey why Didn't knight say something to?
Speaker 5 (44:39):
You he's mister.
Speaker 15 (44:40):
