Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's our one on this Wednesday, Dan and The Dance
Dan Patrick Show. And nobody loves love quite like I do.
But I do need the audience's help because it was
a while ago where I think there were some skeptics
in this room about Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift. Was
it true love? Was it a marketing ploy? Was it
(00:28):
a hoax?
Speaker 3 (00:29):
You know?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Were they in on the joke? Were they truly in love?
And nobody loves love the way I do? And I said, no,
they're in love. And I made a bet with Fritzy
that when they got engaged that I would hit him
with a wedding cake in the face. But we can't
find the day that I said that. If an audience member,
(00:51):
either on social media or you called in and you
can help us locate that because I can't go through
with the bet until we find the audio that says
that I was going to hit Todd in the face
with the cake if they got engaged, which they did yesterday.
Actually they got engaged two weeks ago, according to Travis's dad.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Yes, Hunt.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
I do want to say for the record that I
too love love, But I thought it was gonna be
one of those celebrity Oprah's Deedman kind of things where
a lot of celebrity couples they don't actually go down
the aisle, they get engaged and they just kind of
stay as partners. Not that this wasn't a real thing.
I didn't. I don't think I ever said it was
a publicity stunt that they were together, but it was
more of a I just didn't see them, you know,
getting married anytime in the coming years.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
If you have to know what you're looking for when
you see love, and that's the problem.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
You don't see that. To me, I look past it.
It was obvious to me, it was obvious.
Speaker 6 (01:41):
You were right on it.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Yes, that was yes, we Dan.
Speaker 7 (01:43):
I'm mister semantics, you know, with any type of bet,
I'm curious. I remember you and Fritzy having a bet,
just like you said, but I don't remember the language
of the bet. Was it engaged or married? Those are
two different things. And if Fritzy wants to get out
of the bet, that would be a wiggle room. But
we are looking for it act.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
But you have to get engaged though, yeah, before.
Speaker 7 (02:02):
You get like a catch you have to complete the
process getting there.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
Okay, fair enough. Well, they're officially engaged.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
The biggest power couple in America made it official yesterday.
Yeah yeah, my round of applause. I love it. I
love it. So the thing I thought, well, a couple
of things I thought of. First of all, I get
to hit Todd with a wedding cake. But also, is
this the last year for Travis kelcey. It sounds like
(02:30):
he's got a very popular podcast with his brother. He
can do a lot of different things. He's going to
have a variety of NFL shows to work on if
he wants to. But it'll be more than that. He'll
be involved in more than just that. He's thirty five
and coming off his least productive season since twenty fourteen.
You got three Super Bowl rings, ten Pro Bowls, and
(02:51):
you're one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history.
And no matter what comes next, Kelsey, maybe you chase
one more time title and that would be this year
and then he probably steps away. But on and off
the field, Travis Kelsey has already won. Good Morning, those
watching on Peacock, thank you, downloading the app, those listening
(03:13):
on radio around the country, around the world. We say
good morning as well, Fritzi Sat and Marv Pauli yours
truly the backroom guys as well. On this Wednesday Full

All right, Seatan, what's the poll question for the first
hour of this award nominated program.
Speaker 8 (04:12):
I think we're gonna start with two. Is Travis Kelsey
more likely to retire now that he's engaged. You just
brought that to our attention. I'm gonna start with that.
All right, We're also kicking this around just a little earlier.
The NFL coach that needs to win a playoff game
this season, okay or else?
Speaker 2 (04:28):
All right done, Dolphin said coach Mike McDaniel will be
on the program. Oh no, yeah, he'll be on the
program final hour.
Speaker 7 (04:37):
I'm gonna pause between those two times.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
Oh my bad, by bad. Shouldn't let him breathe a
little bit. There.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
He's the odds on favorite right now, according to Vegas,
to lose his job or the first to lose his job, Yes, Seaton.
Speaker 8 (04:52):
See, I would put it between him and Brian Dables.
I would too that he that's a fellow right there
that needs to win a game.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I would probably say Brian Dable because I don't think
they're gonna be that good soon enough for him to
hold onto that job unless he's already been told you're
coaching next year. Mike McDaniel feels like you're on the clock.
You have to make the playoffs. You might have to
win a playoff game, yeah, PAULI.
Speaker 7 (05:16):
Two years ago, under Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins had the
second rank scoring offense in the league. They were eleven
and six, and they were cruising. Last year, little banged
up eight to nine, their offense went down to twenty
second in the league. You definitely get a haul pass,
but it's got to improve, it's got to go back
to twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I think you've got to make the playoffs. Got to
make the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (05:37):
Yes, Dodd rushould Mike Tomlin be on that list? Or
is it all up to Aaron Rodgers and how he performed,
so does he get another pass. I know the Steels
aren't quick to fire coaches in their history, but at
some points.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I don't know what the odds are with Tomlin because
that they don't fire coaches in Pittsburgh. But the fan
base is fired up of let's get into the playoffs
and actually win a playoff game. And it for me
this and I don't have any information for me, it
feels like this could be Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers last
(06:08):
year's Now Rogers hasn't ruled out playing again and running
it back. But you know, after a while, you know,
your voice gets a little stale. And as great as
Mike Tomlin is and he's going to be a Hall
of Fame coach, maybe there's something else out there, maybe
TV that he would be an analyst there.
Speaker 8 (06:27):
Yeah, I think when we're looking at a conversation like
this or a topic like this, I think that there's
different categories of coaches. That there are coaches who winning
a playoff game would save their job, say like Shane Steichen, right,
if the Colts won a playoff game, all right, dude,
you're good for another year.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Yeah, we'll get you there.
Speaker 8 (06:48):
But then there's other people that, like winning playoff games
probably isn't enough.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Like maybe, like Zach Taylor needs to win se he does.
Speaker 8 (06:56):
That's a fellow right there that needs to not only
win a playoff game, but go have a run.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Because you can only live off the fumes of going
to a super Bowl for so long. Now, if he
won a super Bowl, then maybe it's a little bit different,
a little bit more of an extended time.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (07:11):
See, it's like there are guys who are trying to
build something is one category, and then other coaches who
are wasting an opportunity. And he might fall into that,
Zach Taylor might fall into that, you know, these wasted
years category.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
And I don't know about Kevin Stefanski with the Cleveland
Browns because I don't know what the expectation level is there.
I've been told expect a little bit more, and to
which I said, to my sores, well, I'm not expecting much.
He goes, expect a little bit more. They will be
They're gonna surprise you.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
I said, Okay.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
If Flacco stays healthy, okay, But if he doesn't, then
it gets really interesting there. And then it gets kind
of choppy because you're not quite sure who's your quarterback
means for the future, and you always have that in
the back of your mind. They have two first round
picks next year. There's a chance that all of these
quarterbacks on the Browns may not be there next year,
(08:12):
or two of the three won't be there next year.
You got rookie contracts and you got Joe Flacco.
Speaker 8 (08:18):
Yeah, where do you put like a Brian Schottenheimer on
that list?
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Oh, I have to give him at least two years.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
And Jerry likes to keep the guys in there that
really don't fight back. Yeah, that they kind of allow
him to be the owner and the coach and the
GM and it's his first year.
Speaker 8 (08:39):
It is, but he also he doesn't I don't think
he has a guarantee after this year either is.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
It just is it one year.
Speaker 8 (08:47):
I think that his contract structure, I think I feel
like Florio posted up about it. His contract structure is
not built for longevity. It's built for a very quick out.
I might be wrong, though, Okay, PAULI do have Schottenheimer's Yeah.
Speaker 7 (09:03):
Seed's partially right because it's a four year contract approximately
four point five million per year, which is very low
in the NFL. But there are some outs, easy outs
after two years.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Okay, yeah, you give him two years. See what he
can do with that roster. Yeah, Paul.
Speaker 7 (09:18):
Going back to the Bengals, I was looking at their history.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
They're disturbing. They're very loyal to head coaches.
Speaker 7 (09:24):
They've had two head coaches in twenty four years.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Marvin Lewis.
Speaker 7 (09:28):
They allowed him a number of losing seasons, but he
never had two in a row. And you know Zach
Taylor hot start, but you know nine and eight the
past two years, no losing season.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Got to make the playoffs, got to make the playoffs.
All the money that you spent in the off season,
got to make the playoffs, yeah, Paul.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Or yes, Uh what about if we put on that list.
Speaker 8 (09:48):
This isn't just a playoff game and this is a
guy that needs to have a significant run. I think
Sean McDermott, Yes, well, he's a great you know, their
regular seasons are great.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
But.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Buffalo Bills need to go to the title game for sure,
for at least at least I think.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Okay, more pressure Dan Campbell or Sean McDermott because it
feels like it's Super Bowl or bust. Yeah, Marvin, I'm.
Speaker 9 (10:22):
Gonna go with Dan Campbell, and I think going off
of the twenty four to seven lead that you had
in an NFC title game, it's time to get back. Yeah,
because it's not like the Bills were up twenty four
to seven on the Chiefs. Like all we could have
went to the super Bowl. The Lions could have went already.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (10:36):
I don't know, though, I mean, I think I feel
like there's got to be a lot of pressure on
Sean McDermott. If Josh Allen you have, you know you've
been able to get there, but you just can't get
over the hump necessarily.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (10:51):
I think that if you're a Bills fan, you're looking
You're not looking at the players and saying, why aren't
you doing this?
Speaker 2 (10:57):
It feels like there's been more attention on Sean mcder
in recent years than Dan Campbell because we still I
think we're still trying to figure out the Lions that
that we're told they're good, they should be good, and
they had opportunities. They lose Aiden Hutchinson last year. Now
maybe we get that where you're expected to be a
(11:20):
super Bowl contender.
Speaker 9 (11:21):
Yeah, Marv, Yeah, I keep going with Dan Campbell. Also
because of the home playoff loss against the Commanders. They
got smoked last year at home, but.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
You lost both coordinators in the off season.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Still a good offense, you get Aiden Hutchinson back, and
that division top to bottom. You know, I think people
are sleeping on the Vikings that I mean all of
a sudden, Sam Darnold became, you know, Joe Montana. I
mean they won thirteen games, but you know, all accounts,
JJ McCarthy is playing well, whatever that means to you,
(11:57):
but that's you know what I've read. Hey, he's playing well. Okay,
is he playing well like he did at Michigan or
is he going to play well like an NFL quarterback
because you got to play a little more wellish if
you're going to be an NFL quarterback, not quarterback at Michigan.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
Quarterback playing more wellish? Yeah, Jo, who's most wellish? Most wellish?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
By the way of the week, I have a Dodger
fan and uh he texts all the time. He said,
Taylor Swift got a ring before the padres did I
love the rivalries? I love it.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Ryan in Pennsylvania, Hi, Ry, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 10 (12:43):
Solved your great mystery of the wedding cake bet. I
found a video and there's definitely some discrepancy. It sounds
like Dan said engagement. Fritzy said wedding. So you might
have to find an attorney now to settle at all.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Okay, Ryan, stay on hold the back room. Guys want
to talk to you about, you know, the exact date
on that. So there's a there's a damn discrepancy.
Speaker 7 (13:12):
I knew it would be semantics.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Well, we can vote on it, and if you guys
want to let Fritzie off the hook on that, yeah,
you know, let me find it first and then we
can listen to it. But I thought that the bet
was an engagement before I retired. For some reason, I
thought that there was a time frame to this.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
Yes, Ton, I.
Speaker 5 (13:35):
Am interested to see what was I can't honestly can't
remember it. If I'm doing cake, then so be it.
It's fun content, but I'm hopefully we can find it
and they get to the bottom.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
That doesn't help it. It doesn't mean it does not
help them. You had nothing to say.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
There, They didn't.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
I guess you thought.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
Everybody has body language. I didn't raise my head.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
All the dants have body language that I'm you know,
I'm trying to call them out because if you're listening
on radio, I want you to know the name and
the voice. And Todd leaned In, Seaton has a little
bit of a hand up, PAULI puts one finger up,
Marv leans In or he'll have his hand up five
or six times in a row. And just trying to
(14:17):
read body language there, how about we take a break.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
We're just getting started. I love love.
Speaker 6 (14:22):
I didn't mean to confuse you there.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
It's okay.
Speaker 5 (14:23):
You need to get away from the mic a little
bit more so you don't think I'm trying to say something.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Well, it's almost like you're leaning into the microphone, as
if you're gonna be able to hear in the microphone,
like you're leaning in to hear what I'm saying odd.
Speaker 5 (14:35):
It's one of my many quirks that they hate to
work on.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
And once again, you can't spell todd without odd.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (14:43):

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Just bring in Nick Right, host of First Things First
on Fox Sports one and What's Right with Nick Wright
on YouTube wherever you get your podcast. Which coach do
you think has to have a playoff win this year?
Speaker 4 (16:01):
A playoff win.
Speaker 6 (16:02):
Is such an interesting way to frame it because I
I just I was thinking about it in terms of
making the playoffs. If Zach Taylor doesn't make the playoffs,
he's fired. Like I don't think Mike McDaniel has to
win a playoff game. I disagree with that, And it's
not just because he's on in an hour. And by
the way, have you ever had in a show two
more physically imposing guests back to back than me than
(16:25):
Mike McDaniel? My god, I mean, the testosterone in this
room off the charts. Like if the Dolphins make the playoffs,
he's as safe as can be because the expectations have
been lowered you know what I mean. So I would go,
this is gonna sound insane, but I would go, like
John Harball, they better win a playoff game like the
(16:48):
and I know that's the he's a great coach, Sean McDermott.
They need to win a playoff game like it's the
Make the playoffs is the threshold to me for the
coach who could be on the hot seat win a
playoff game as the coach who oh, he's totally safe, unless,
of course, this year ends in tragedy because we think
we can win the Super Bowl. We don't even make
(17:09):
it out of round one. So those are the those
are the people I would have put on there if
I know that's a little counterintuitive, but that's how that's
how I view it.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
What about more pressure to win a playoff game Mike
Tomlin or John Harbaugh.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
Tomlin?
Speaker 6 (17:27):
Tom Tomlin is Yeah, that that's another good one because
he's in his own unique category where he in a
weird way. Steeler fans likely would be more okay with
four and thirteen bottom falls out than the seventh seed
make the playoffs and get clocked by Josh Allen again,
(17:49):
you know what I mean, Like seriously, like the and
so yeah, I think Tomlin. Tomlin's better off missing the
playoffs and breaking a streak than making the playoffs and
using in round one, which is maybe not fair, but
I think that's reality.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
I veried the leading how emotional was yesterday when you
found out that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey Gravisgate.
Speaker 6 (18:12):
I'm very very happy for him. I also, you know
this is it's moments like that where I just wish
we had a take czar that held people accountable. And
I'm not gonna name names here, and I know you're
gonna ask me to, but I won't do it. I
would just like for the people who two years ago
(18:34):
were very adamant that the relationship was a work, was
publicity stun all of those things? Did they do they?
Is there a moment of public shame? Is there a
moment of apology? Is there a moment of you know what,
I shouldn't have doubted? What is America's greatest love story?
For my own Twitter gain, I don't know, Like they
(18:56):
seemed to be really into each other and it seems
to be a healthy, delightful relationship and now they're getting married.
Now I know what your follow up question is going
to be, which is am I going to be invited
to the wedding, to which I would say, that's a
very rude question to.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Ask, well, because I was going to ask you who
will be the maid of honor?
Speaker 6 (19:17):
The maid of honor?
Speaker 4 (19:18):
And I'm going Selena Gomez.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
I gotta admit, in our years of knowing each other,
I think this is the first time I've ever said
this on this show. I'm not equipped to answer that question.
I like Taylor Swift, I respect Taylor Swift. I know
very little about Taylor Swift, so I can't. I'm not
now who will be? We know who the best man's
(19:43):
going to be. That'll be Jason h one hundred percent
of the time. And there is something just delightful to
the fact that Jason Kelsey and Taylor Swift god willing
are going to be spending dozens of holidays to get
moving forward, Like there is something charming about the idea
(20:05):
that there will be a Christmas Night sometime in the
future where Jason Kelsey, likely wearing overalls with nothing underneath
it an egg nog dripping from his beard, tries to
give Taylor Swift a giant bear hug. I just like that.
That feels very American and awesome to me.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
They'll be crushing beers together.
Speaker 6 (20:25):
Yeah, absolutely right, absolutely right. Can I ask you your
take on someone else's theory because I think you'll like
it since you brought this up Kevin Wilde's National Treasure
coas the first things first when they first got together,
he said, this just confirms my long held belief that
(20:50):
all of life is high school. I'm like, what do
you mean? And he's like, if your tailor swift. In
high school, the only thing you you were the band girl,
You the only like you didn't get the prom queen
football player boyfriend, Like that's the one. You've accomplished everything
(21:11):
imaginable in life, but there is this one void, like
you didn't get to have that type of high school experience.
And what initially drew her to Travis was I get
to have it now I'm dating the star football player,
I'm going to the games. And that was their initial connection.
And I thought it was a brilliant take, And I
(21:32):
want your opinion on that take. That's not mine. But
now that I've said it on this platform, people be like,
you know what I heard, Nick? Right from those Kevin Lotlestey.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
You'll get credit exactly right.
Speaker 6 (21:41):
I gave him credit. Nobody could say I stole it,
but the people will forget. I think it's the right take.
Yeah time, I'm glad I came up with it.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
I love love, I said from the beginning, and UH
have a bet with Fritzi. I thought that they were
going to get engaged. I thought that they were going
to get married. When people said, why do the why
do they keep showing her on camera? I go blame
the next It works, But if you have the like
it doesn't make any sense that you have the biggest
pop star in the world and you wouldn't show her
on camera. Of course we show Robert Kraft ten times
(22:10):
every Sunday or Jerry Jones is there so right?
Speaker 6 (22:14):
Or Jack Nicholson for our entire lives growing up like
this is the there are the threshold to get cutaways
during sporting events of what celebrity you need to be
is certainly below world's most famous woman like there.
Speaker 8 (22:31):
I don't know what it is, but it is the
kid ump.
Speaker 6 (22:36):
It cracks it, so I think Taylor Swift does.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
But remember when Fox would invite like Party of five
is here at Yankee stadium down the right field line,
and I go, oh, they how did that happen?
Speaker 6 (22:48):
All right, this feels you know, this feels like a
shot because I don't know if you watched last year's
World Series, but in the party of five seats was
Nick Wright and First Things First? Yeah, show yeah. And
now some will say, wow, how times of shames. I
would say, we're right on track. Boys, I do remember.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
That we're talking to Nick Wright, host of First Things
First on Fox Sports one. How did the Chiefs not
make the Super Bowl?
Speaker 6 (23:17):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (23:17):
God, act of god.
Speaker 6 (23:20):
You know, there's obviously one thing that could wreck their
season entirely, but I'm not gonna say that out loud.
I'm not gonna even speak that into the universe.
Speaker 4 (23:31):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (23:32):
But uh, they're the best team in the league. They're
certainly the best team in the AFC. And Dan I
realized to tell a sports media tell you're gonna love this.
I know you're gonna love this because it's been very
trendy this offseason. This is not a straw man. This
isn't Nick looking, you know, scouring the internet for Chiefs dout.
It's been there in large supply, and that the Ravens
(23:56):
got better they're clearly the best roster. The Bills, you know,
we have ascended and the Chiefs, you know, is the
window not closed but closing? And oh my, has anyone
seen how bo Nicks plays against backups? Holy only the
AFC West is in jeopardy. That has been that take
has been everywhere all off season. And then Micah Parsons
(24:17):
maybe comes available, and all those same people with that,
the Chiefs are vulnerable. The Chiefs aren't the best. You
know what their take on Micah is man Buffalo or
Baltimore needs to make the phone call. It's like hold
on a second, No, you know what. No one has said.
If the Chiefs want a chance to get back to
(24:38):
the super Bowl, they need to trade for Micah Parsons.
Everyone is saying simultaneously, B block of the show, Ravens
and Bills are the class of the AFC. A block
of the next day show. The Ravens and Bills need
to trade for MICHAEH. Parsons to get over the hump.
What's the hump? America? Who are we talking about here?
Finish the thought so the Chiefs will be fine. Jeff Simmons,
(25:01):
uh had Josh Simmons pardon me hopefully has fixed a
left tackle position. I don't know if you saw it yesterday,
but every single receiver from the twenty twenty two Kansas
City Chiefs, when Mahomes one MVP set the all time
record for total yards in the season one Super Bowl
MVP is no longer in the NFL. And the Chiefs
won with that team, they'll be able to win with
(25:22):
this team.
Speaker 4 (25:24):
I hate rankings. And I know it's good.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
I know it's good conversation, good phil, But you know,
I go back to when ESPN said Michael Jordan's the
greatest college basketball player of all time.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Well that was that was the worst. That's the worst ranking.
That's and I'm not I'm not trying to get a
shot at Jordan there. I know people yes, no, yeah,
that's just that is that is an untenable opinion. That's like,
but go ahead.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
So but the point is that we keep ranking these
quarterbacks and you know, is Jalen Hurts the top five?
Speaker 4 (25:56):
Is he a top ten all?
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Mahomes doesn't have the stats, he shouldn't be in the time,
and I think if you ranked playoff quarterbacks, that to
me has more value. Now we won't do that, but
I would put the guys who have actually done this,
the guys who have produced when your team needs you
and you're going to a championship or a super Bowl.
Here it feels like we have two different rankings regular
(26:19):
season and then we would have postseason, because I don't
care where Jalen Hurts is ranked.
Speaker 4 (26:25):
I just know on that team he's tremendous and he wins.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
Yeah, so yes, that is true. I also do think
I am interested in the impossible but always fun attempt
to separate player from team in a team sport concept.
And I know some people find it annoying if you're
(26:51):
like if you put Jalen Hurts on another team and
it's like, well, he's not on another team. But I
do find it somewhat instructive and at least a fund
mental exercise. So I in that context, I understand that Berkley,
are you the tractor or the trailer piece of this,
which is really what a lot of this is. It
(27:13):
goes back to a lot of my Brock Purdy skepticism,
you know, from a couple of years ago, which has
been proven correct in every single step of the way.
I think Jalen, I like you value playing your best
in the biggest spots, and he has played tremendously in
both Super Bowls. He is clearly very tough and he
(27:35):
does not blink in the big moment. With that said,
I am not that is enough to me to elevate him.
Would I rather have in a playoff game Jalen Hurts
or Lamar? I'd rather have Jalen Hurts in a playoff game?
It would I rather have Jalen Hurts or Josh Allen.
I'd rather have Josh Allen. Now, I know Josh hasn't
(27:56):
been to a Super Bowl, but he has played so
well in the postseason that you can't be like Ah.
The moment gets to him and so that to me though. Now, ideally,
in a perfect world, you would have a quarterback with
the greatest stats in the regular season and the postseason,
but unfortunately everyone can't be Chiefs fans.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
If not the Eagles in the NFC, then who All right, right.
Speaker 6 (28:22):
Now, I'm not picking the Eagles in the NFC. I
will answer this question. Will you ask your social media
people not to put it out because you are your
front running first things first prediction week? Look, is that
a deal? Because we make our big picks on Friday.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
Okay, Paul, would you tell the backroom guys that we
can't put this out of If you can't.
Speaker 6 (28:45):
Put this out and I'm not going to ask you
on YouTube to bleep it, but this could be a
live audience exclusive.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
Okay, got the.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Oh my goodness, oh my, that's I
know it's gonna be hard. Now your guys in the
back room are gonna be like, that is gonna that
is a viral, but viral bonanza. This guy nobody's had.
But I'm telling you, listen, we can talk the schedule,
the offense, fake show, A lot of stuff, A lot
(29:17):
of stuff to like the fact that if you don't
have Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes. Last twenty five years,
you win the Super Bowl. Half the team's more than
half the teams don't even win a playoff game the
next year. Only one team, Russell Wilson Seahawks, have gotten
back to the Super Bowl. No team is going back
to back NFC East in twenty years since Andy Reid
did it four straight times with Eagles. A lot of
(29:38):
things there a lot to like about the box.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
All right, you watched the Cowboys documentary.
Speaker 6 (29:49):
I've been gambling in Monaco. Dan, Sorry, I have not
watched it.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
You just got to Netflix in Monica.
Speaker 6 (29:58):
Hey, honey, I'm a about to retire to six straight
months of football at all times. We're in the south
of France. You go have fun. I'm gonna watch Jerry
Jones and Emma. Have you watched the Chiefs documentary? Kevin
Wilde's wife produced that, And the answer to that is
(30:20):
also no. Okay, not watched the Chiefs documentary. I'm not
an equal opportunity. It's fair and also too painful. Too painful.
I know how the story ends, you know, one of
the worst moments of my life.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
Did you cry?
Speaker 6 (30:40):
No? I didn't cry, but I'm didn't too much. I
was gonna get too far. I have to self censor.
Did I hurt myself? Make did I cry? You harmed
yourself again? That's why I said self at it. I
see you grabbing the paper, which means our interview is
(31:00):
almost over. But so I have to do some real
quick because you and I are I owe you a dinner.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
Yes we have.
Speaker 6 (31:07):
We've been missing each other. You know where we should
do it. Hold on, let me hold this up to
the camera. It's a bit of a trip for you. You
see then you see what that says?
Speaker 4 (31:16):
Fifteen eighty seven Prime?
Speaker 6 (31:18):
Yeah, did you get your invite to the opening? Who's
number fifteen Patrick?
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (31:26):
Come on New Steakhouse in kids. Any money, we could
go to the opening together. You can be my plus one?
How about that? What if I get to say? How's
why is Dan Patrick here? He's Nick writes plus one?
Speaker 4 (31:39):
What a dream? What a dream? And that's what it'll be?
Just a dream?
Speaker 3 (31:46):
Okay?
Speaker 6 (31:47):
Just what?
Speaker 4 (31:48):
But nice? Thank you for the invitation.
Speaker 6 (31:50):
You want to go the US Open? I'm going tonight? No, okay, fine?
Is it bad for him? I'm wearing my Wimbledon shirt
to the US Opening. Sorry, I know you're trying to go.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
I like it. It's fine. Wear what you want to wear.
Speaker 6 (32:04):
Okay, thanks buddy.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Yeah, I mean you're always dressed up on your show. Well, yeah,
we wear suits. You guys wear quarter zips. Well it's
a radio show that's on TV. Oh really, you're a
TV show on TV.
Speaker 6 (32:18):
You guys aren't on TV anymore.
Speaker 4 (32:19):
Yeah, but we are a radio show. Oh you know,
just for the job you want, that's what it is.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Well, when you get dressed up and you hand out
the super Bowl trophy.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
Then you left.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
The hundred million people watching what I wore?
Speaker 3 (32:38):
A million people watch?
Speaker 2 (32:39):
Yes, one hundred million people four times four four times?
Speaker 4 (32:46):
Had it out super Bowl?
Speaker 6 (32:48):
Yeah? And then you did the Olympics.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
That's four hundred million, and then the Olympics thone in there.
I don't need to be dressing up.
Speaker 6 (32:55):
What do you wear to the Emmys to not go
on stage?
Speaker 2 (32:58):
To not win? Same thing you wear? O nothing? Thank you, Nick,
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
Mike McDaniel four season as the Dolphins head coach and
of course a star wide receiver with the Yale Bulldogs.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
Official height and weight coach.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
Five nine and undisclosed because.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
At Yale you were five nine one seventy five. But
that feels like that might have been inflated a little bit.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
You know, it was actually closer to my true weight
at that time. I was inflated. My body wasn't really
built for that weight, but I was taking a lot
of supplements at the time.
Speaker 2 (33:53):
Okay, legal supplements of course, of course above brow of course.
Speaker 4 (33:58):
Were you Julian Edelman before Julian Edelman?
Speaker 3 (34:02):
Yes, end statement. Yeah. Now I was limited to an
inside receiver route tree because of lack of linear speed
and as quicker than fast as they'd say, And I
did a lot of coaching while playing.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
If you know what I mean, how about forty yard
Danish if you race Tyreek Hill?
Speaker 4 (34:28):
Yeah, he would get me, he would. I had to
think about it.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Okay, is there anybody closer to him speed wise?
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Yeah, there's I think there's a lot of guys that
are that are that are fast, particularly on our team,
But I think what makes his speed unique is the acceleration.
You know, it's he gets top speed very quick. He's
almost speed on the third step of a route when
(35:02):
he's motioning. So the quickness and speed is hard to
it's hard to match. But there's several guys on the
team that will with absolute certainty say that they're faster
than him, even though they don't have a time as
fast as his.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
But if you're calling plays knowing that he's so quick
at like, does it change if you're calling something, let's
say it's third and seven, you just want to get
him the ball because of that acceleration, not he has
to go out seven or eight yards.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
No, you know, quite literally. One of the positives of
being in the same offensive system for my entire career.
You know, I came in two thousand and five learning
Mike Shanahan's and have stayed with it is realistically, the
what the offense is is a product of people's skill sets.
(35:57):
So we do a lot of timeing motion and because
we can utilize Tyreek and Waddell and et cetera at
that that their unique skill sets. So pretty much. Uh,
you know, all all players skill sets for us now
in the system are it was kind of adapted to
(36:19):
them and try to use their their best skills most frequently.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
When did that change?
Speaker 2 (36:28):
It felt like when quarterbacks were drafted, certainly in my era,
that you had to adapt to that coach and his philosophy.
Speaker 4 (36:35):
Where it feels.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
Like Cam Newton when he came in, it felt like
Carolina says, hey, we're going to cater to your needs.
I don't know if you remember since you were there
with Shanahan and five, Uh, did you see something a
seismic shift where you're kind of adapting your audience or
your your offense to that quarterback you're taking.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
Yeah, I think, uh, you just hit on something super
interesting because the whole the whole tree underneath. Kyle Shanahan
learned that in twenty twelve when we had a rookie
RG three at quarterback and we're gonna jump into the
game of zone read, and uh, realistically, we completely adapted.
(37:23):
You know, I was an offensive assistant, you know, Matt
Lafleur was the quarterback coach. Sean McVay was the Titans coach,
Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
You know.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
Raheem Morris was the defense or secondary coach. Bobby Sloak
was outside linebackers coach. All these people first hand where
we had our offense from what we ran in Houston
and extension Denver and then retooled it in Washington, and
(37:59):
then for for me personally and and Kyle, we went
we got fired and then went to Cleveland and had
a job and didn't want to get fired, so we
tried to adapt to those players. And then we did
the same thing when we went to Atlanta. So it
was it's really in the course of the journey. Early on,
(38:20):
we we had the opportunity to you know, directly, you know,
evolve the offense to cater to players' needs. And you know,
I've kind of seen everything through that lens.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
Since most talented quarterback you've ever been around? Talented what
the quarterback quarterbacking?
Speaker 3 (38:43):
You know, I would I would say, uh, you know,
Matt Ryan was up there, but I think two was
probably the most talented quarterback. The most talented, uh speed
threat was probably Robert Griffin the third you know, so
he was fast and before the defense schematically caught up
(39:07):
to us. You know, he do his Rookie of the
Year for a reason. Matt Ryan played the game in
a unique way that really changed a lot of stuff
that we do in the dropback game based upon how
how good he was. And then there was one of
the best quarterbacks at play action pass that's super underrated
(39:30):
was Matt shab He was. He was really good at
utilizing Andrew Johnson's speed and being able to avoid sacks
while getting explosives.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Talking to Mike McDaniel, four season is the Dolphins head coach.
You start out, you got Indy at Indy, then host
New England at Buffalo, and then host New York.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
How much pressure do you feel?
Speaker 3 (39:54):
No. I always think that's funny because I think I
would have to be deluged and all to not you know,
expect you know, I think you take a job like
this and you're working in the NFL, and for me,
I'm preparing to have this job, and then I take
the job, and I'm very much aware of the black
(40:16):
and white reality of you know, wins and losses and
and how things, how you're able to you know, sustain
the job and keep the job and evolve. The program
is all based on, you know, the nuts and bolts
of winning and losing games. So I think everything that
I do to prepare has always been to kind of
(40:40):
be my best self in moments of pressure. And yeah,
I mean I know it exists, but I don't feel
it because it's kind of you know, ingrained or attached
to what I understand this job to be.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
How much do you take home with you?
Speaker 3 (40:59):
You know, the gift of you know, my one and
only daughter has has really helped, uh, you know, create
some boundaries for myself. You know, I carry stuff through
the through the car ride home, but when I get home,
especially when you have a short compressed time to to
(41:20):
be something that's, you know, pillar of importance in who
you are as a person, which is being a father.
For me, I get to I get the gift of
being able to get home, see her face, engage her,
and try to leave it at work, because you have
to be balanced in life to have your edge at
(41:44):
your performance really for whatever you're doing. So uh, you know,
I think earlier in my career I struggled to do that,
but my daughter's really helped me out with that one.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
When you were growing up and you were getting those
autographs when you go to the Broncos camp, do you
still have those autographs?
Speaker 3 (42:03):
I do in a trunk somewhere.
Speaker 4 (42:05):
What are some of your favorite autographs that you got
when you were a kid.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
I had. I had one sleeve of cards like in
the plastic, but it was a sleeve and a binder
that kept all the autographs, and it was probably the
John Oa page. I had about seven of them because
I was a relentless obsessed daily visitor at Denver Brocks
(42:31):
training camp. So those were probably my favorite. Or you know,
the the Robert del Pino one that led to uh
to me meeting my stepdad. That was probably the two
best ones that that got me uh connected with Mike
Shanahan in the first place.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
Okay, so explain that because it wasn't it an assistant coach, right,
explain how your mom met her your stepdad?
Speaker 3 (42:58):
Well, I mean it's the normal nuclear family trajectory of
a child introducing uh mother and stepfather.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
Of course happens all the time.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Yeah. So I was getting an autograph. Uh. Well, I would
go to Denver Bronco training camp and uh and get
autographs daily. I had a Charlotte Hornet's fitted loud purple
and teal hat and uh it was noticeable. So I
(43:35):
got Robert Delpino's autograph earlier in the day. I wanted
to get another one. As an only child, I guess
I just wanted more. So I put the hat down,
got the autograph, came back, the hat was gone. I
was about nine at the time. So I was crying
and a member of the Broncos was uh interested in
while I was freaking out. I told him about the hat.
(43:58):
He took down the measurements. A couple of days later,
he saw me again at training camp because I was
automatic at Lawrence Hall at the time, and he uh
he gave me a hat with a price tag on it.
He went out to the Greeley mall and bought me
a hat, and so then I thought he was worthy
of meeting my mother. So I introduced them and they
(44:20):
got married and moved to Denver and was as a result,
he was an assistant video guy for for the Broncos
and I got to at age fourteen. I was a
ball boy through high school and you know, really got
in the NFL door, you know, being able to be
(44:42):
around the guys and stuff from you know, before I
could drive.
Speaker 2 (44:46):
Well, speaking of love, your reaction to Travis Kelsey and
Taylor Swift getting engaged was what.
Speaker 3 (44:54):
Oh you just told me? I didn't know, that's my reaction.
Speaker 4 (45:00):
How do you not know?
Speaker 3 (45:03):
Well, you, uh, you keep yourself from anything that's multimedia,
and then, uh, you make yourself a terrible conversation when
people bring up pop culture and you do that over time,
and then you don't know anything that you uh, you know,
I'm pumped to hear about it now, I guess, you know,
(45:25):
I think there's layers to to my reaction. You know,
you know, I'm hoping it's a loved love based relationship
and you know, and good for them. You know, finally,
finally they're not I mean finally they're doing it the
old fashioned way, you know, where people shouldn't really enter
(45:47):
into any escapades unless they're married. You know.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
So, now, if one of your guys gets engaged, do
you expect to be invited to the wedding?
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Now, I'm the boss, like, so, I appreciate if I am,
But my expectation is that nobody wants to hang out
with me ever that I'm the boss.
Speaker 4 (46:07):
Of Are you a buzzkill?
Speaker 3 (46:11):
No, it's just the nature of boss, you know. The
nature of boss is like, all right, this isn't work.
Why do I feel like it's work? Oh, because there's
the guy that may or may not be judging me,
you know. So I don't get my feelings hurt. I
don't have high expectations for that, just understanding the role
(46:31):
and responsibility.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
Always great to catch up with you. Thanks for joining us,
good luck starting the season.
Speaker 3 (46:38):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (46:39):
That's Mike McDaniel. Four season is the Dolphins head coach.
They were eight to nine last year and they open
up at Indy, host New England, at Buffalo and hosts
New York
