Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Watching the game last night and watching what the Lions
did to the Ravens made me wonder where did the
Ravens defense go? Because it used to be the Ravens
had a great defense. They always had a great defense
and opportunistic defense. They forced turnovers, they got sacks, and
they led with their defense. Now they're an offensive minded team,
(00:28):
which is fine unless the offense you're facing is better
than your offense. And the Lions offense last night was that.
When you have two drives over ninety five yards, you're
sending a real loud message to the other team. You
can't stop us. You could only hope to contain us.
(00:49):
David Montgomery and Jamier Gibbs each scored two rushing touchdowns.
They rushed for two hundred and twenty four yard That's
the most of Ravens defense is allowed since twenty seven.
Team the Lions the first team to have two touchdown
(01:14):
drives of ninety five or more yards in the same
game since twenty twenty one. That's one of those that's
old school, that's not flashy, that's not tricky, that's just, hey,
we're gonna run. We're gonna run over there. Montgomery's gonna
run over there. Jamior Gibbs is gonna run there. That's
(01:36):
when you take a team's hardaway and then you couple
that with seven sacks and then you have the punch
out of Derrick Henry and the Lions with a huge win,
and then the Ravens have to go to Kansas City
next weekend. One of those teams is gonna be one
and three. But the Lions everything, you know, as far
(01:57):
as all they're coordinators, they're not the same team. And
you know they got they got blown out when they
played the Packers. Absolutely, but what we've seen is Dan
Campbell gives the presence of this gruff guy, but he
calls a good game because I put this on Dan
Campbell with his ability to handle the offense, and you
(02:21):
saw that last night. Now they're still going to go
forward on fourth down. They'll have a couple of trick
plays in there. But this was just and Aiden Hutchinson
is back in case you didn't know, but you know
you had the big play and that was Derrick Henry's
fumble and it sounded like this Jackson hands it to
handle back.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Oh mine buddles out. Yeah, by the Lions, they've got
it inside the twenty yard line.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
DJ Reid with a football in his hands.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
The Lions stripped it away from Derrick Henry.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
What a big turn of events. And the Lions have
got it now.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
And it's the punch out that that's, you know, And
it started with Peanut Tillman with the Bears. I think
he's the godfather of the punch out. But here's three
fumbles with Derek Henring and two of those fumbles have
cost them, dearly cost them the game. Here's Derrick Henry
on his fumbling issues.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Crazier right now. My three games straight in my career,
string fumbles in critical moments. Yeah, I apologize, sought nation
and you know, I.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Just don't you work in and it was short.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, you just don't expect that. And I always go
back to Tiki Barber when he had his fumbling issues
with the Giants and nearly cost him his job. And
then he learned how to hold the ball differently and
he was he ran almost like Forrest Gump with his
arms up really high, but he wasn't fumbling anymore and
has had a borderline Hall of Fame career because of that.
(03:53):
But with Derek Henring and the punch outs, and this
is if you can't tackle him, then go for the ball.
I certainly understand that I wouldn't want to tackle him,
but if you can go for that punch out. And
plus these defensive players are allowed to hit the opposition
like you can punch somebody in the arm. I mean,
(04:13):
there's nothing, there's no rules against that. And if you
go back to I don't know if it was hard knocks,
and Seaton probably can give you a better information on it.
I didn't see it, but Seaton told me about it.
When Aaron Rodgers was mad at Max Crosby because Max
Crosby on every play was hitting Aaron Rodgers in his
(04:35):
passing arm. Yeah, I think it was Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
It was definitely Max Crosby though, and whoever the quarterback was.
If it wasn't Aaron Rodgers, I apologize, But he every
time Max Crosby even got near him, he punched him
in his throwing arm, right in the shoulder.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
He'd punch him, and the.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Quarterback he's like, dude, stop man, you know what you're doing.
He's like, Max Crosby's like what what do what do
you mean?
Speaker 6 (04:54):
What do you mean?
Speaker 5 (04:54):
Every time he went by him, bang just smashed him
right in the throwing shoulder, right in the arm.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
You're allowed to do that if you're a defensive player.
I can wind up and say I'm going for the ball.
I can try to punch you, and worst case scenario,
I'm going to hit you in the arm. Yeah, PAULI.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
All three of Derrick Henry's fumbles this season are off
punch outs. And I went back and looked. He never
has had more than five in a single season. So
maybe it's not Derrick Henry, it's the new play for
the defenders. I asked our stats people to look at this.
From twenty eighteen to twenty twenty three, there was an
average about one hundred and twenty fumbles per year by
NFL running backs. Last year jumped to one forty. This
(05:34):
year it's on pace for one sixty. So in the
past two years, fumbles for running backs are up quite
a bit.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
All right, Well, come up with the pole question. Got
our play of the day coming up as well, and
phone numbers eight seven seven three DP show Seeton. What
are we going to go with? First hour of the program.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
Let's see, Well, we have a random one here that
maybe I'll save for a second. But who's in better
shape right now? The Ravens are the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
It feels like we've seen the best that the Ravens
are going to be. From the standpoint of offense. You know,
you lose to Buffalo, no shame in that you lose
to the Lions. The way you lost to the Lions
would be really disconcerting because I don't Ray Lewis didn't
walking through the door. Terrell Suggs didn't walking through the door.
(06:24):
Ed Reid is not walking through the door. You got
to score a lot of points now you do have
the potential to do that because Lamar did have a
good passing night. It's almost as if, and Troy Aikman
said this on the broadcast. He's like, hey, I wouldn't
rush Lamar Jackson. I would have as many defensive backs
as possible because I don't want him to run. I
(06:47):
can have him stay in the pocket. We can eventually
get to him. And that's what they did last night.
They had seven sacks on him. It seems I don't
think he's ever been sacked that many times, even close
to that because you would think he be able to
get away, but they kept him in the pocket. And
then you have the secondaries, like you know, we're going
to bottle up their receivers. And it worked and I
(07:09):
did have a good passer rating and threw for three touchdowns.
But what the Lions did was an interesting philosophy. But
it still goes back to the Ravens defense. The Chiefs
have a good defense. Now they don't have the offense
that the Ravens have, but I do think once they
get a couple of their wide receivers back, then we're
(07:30):
going to see if Kansas City is real and maybe
Kansas City still has Tyreek Hill in play, because I
don't think the Dolphins are going anywhere. Yes, dud, I
think the Ravens.
Speaker 7 (07:40):
Are in better shape, only from a division standpoint. With
Joe Burrow out, the Browns aren't anything, even if they
snuck past the Packers. But Denver and the Raiders and
Chiefs grant that they're all one and two. But just
looking at the AFC North and AFC West, I'd be
more comfortable as a Raven fan in the long run
this year.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah, that's a great point if you buy into is
Denver going to be like they were last year. The Chargers,
they got injuries, Naji Harris out for the season, So yeah,
I certainly understand putting divisional play in there. Nick Bosa's
done for the year. Another injury for the forty nine ers. Wow,
(08:17):
an ACL tear and Naji Harris is ACL with the Chargers?
Speaker 5 (08:22):
What other Achilles? What else do we have seton Tier
one of the NFC? Paul just sent this over Tier
one of the NFC. Is that the Eagles alone or
the Eagles and the Lions.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Well, I would put the Packers in there too. I mean,
the Packers blew out the Lions so and granted they
I know they lost to Cleveland, but if we're going
recency biased, then I understand that. But Green Bay did
beat Detroit head up. Would I would put three teams
in there? I mean, I still think the Rams are
in that top five in the NFC, but I would say,
(09:03):
and I think the Eagles will look great. I mean
they needed heroic performance by Jalen Hurtz and a block
field goal. I would say Lions, Packers, Rams, Eagles. That'd
be my top my top four. What else.
Speaker 6 (09:22):
Do you read books?
Speaker 2 (09:26):
I try? Yes, often yes, you're there, or no.
Speaker 6 (09:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Mike Florio came in yesterday and he's got a new
book and he wanted to know because I have all
these books in here. I have a huge wall of books.
And he goes, do you do you read books? And
I go no, I mean I tried to. I just
don't have the attention span I try. I look like
I read a lot of books, but I read a
(09:51):
lot of articles.
Speaker 7 (09:52):
I can.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
I can last through an article unless it's a really
long article, and then it takes me a couple of
days tog through that really long I just I lose interest.
The same thing with TV shows. You know there's a
series on, and you know, my wife will say, man,
you really like Severance. And then I watched I think
(10:15):
twelve minutes and I was done, and she goes, how
do you only give it twelve minutes? I go, hun,
you got to capture capture my attention or I'm gone, yeah, Pauline, Well.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
What kind of articles those deep dive Vanity Fair articles
or like those US Weekly six paragraph articles.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
I probably could you know, get through a Vanity Fair
article or GQ or Esquire, but you know US Weekly.
You know if I'm at the physical therapist. I'm gonna
look at that when they say, mister Patrick, are ready
for you. Hold On, I'm reading something here. Timothy Shallome
has got a new haircut. Hold On, I'll be there, yes, Ton.
Speaker 7 (10:53):
Is it completely attention span or did you ever get
intented by the size of a book? Like I can
deal with like an one hundred and fifty page book,
but could you sit down with the four or five
hundred page thing a novel. I'm like, I'm never going
to get through this. This will take a year.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
I can't do it. And then my wife is in
a book club, so she's reading a book a week
and then I'm like, okay, I said, and then she'll say, hey,
you know, you should read this book, and then she'll
give it to me, and then she realizes that I
didn't read the book, and I'd just say, I'm you know,
I'll read the cover and what you know people are
(11:26):
saying about it. But it's it's just even when we
have guests on and they have a book out, I'll
read reviews on it, but and sometimes I'll go through
and get excerpts. Uh, you know. Seth Wickersham wrote an
article about the quarterback, and I actually read a lot,
you know, I just skipped chapters and I was just
looking for whatever I found interesting. But yeah, it's a
(11:48):
shame because I am not a good reader, never have been,
guess Pauline.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Follow up a question on do you read books? Is
listening to a book on tape reading a book? I'm
going to give you credit for it, credit or full credit.
I'll give you a full credit. Yeah, I'll give you
full credit. I mean, somebody's reading the book to you.
But that's okay, I'm fine with that. Yes, ton to me, that's.
Speaker 7 (12:13):
Like an audio movie or something. I don't know if
that's reading a book. I think, you know, flipping the
pages or even if you're using technology and you're moving
it with your finger across the board whatever. I just
that sounds like I don't know, I'm gonna say cheating.
That's not the book experience in my opinions, being read
to you.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Well, it's either that or cliff notes version. And I
was king of the cliff Notes version. By the way,
it's Cliff's Notes. Yeah, note, Yeah, it's cliffs. I don't know.
I mean, I don't know Cliff, but Cliff's Notes. I
remember I would I'd read those if you said I
could do cliff notes or I could have somebody read
(12:51):
me a book. I'd rather somebody read me a book
instead of me just cheating off somebody's paper.
Speaker 5 (12:57):
Yes, that's kind of like. They're actually called Brussels sprouts. Yeah,
it's not Brussels sprouts. They're Brussels sprouts from Brussels.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Yeah, you haven't used monarch notes.
Speaker 7 (13:08):
That was another thing. Clip notes were yellow, but there
was also a red book called monarch Notes. They both
kind of did the same thing, and they were like
in competition with each other for some reason, monarch Notes
and clip notes so you don't have to read the
book when you get the assignment.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Todd, I wasn't a good student.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
I didn't care enough to actually do the cliffs notes
about it. I just like, I'll just wing it. Yeah,
I wasn't a good student.
Speaker 6 (13:28):
I waste my money on these.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
I'm a shamed to admit bad student. Whenever I would
tell my kids about grades and you know, studying, and
they go, well you didn't, I said, yeah, I know,
but and you're successful, Yeah I know, but still and
then I'm like, yeah, you know, talk to your mom.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Yes, that's the worst part of like you're talking to
your kid about like, hey man, you really got to
study and do it, like trust me, all right? You
really want Why why do I have to trust you? Well,
because you want your life to work out? You're great,
you want to do like what You're not happy with
the way your life worked out?
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (13:59):
No, I am just saying, so what you think it
could be better? Dude, don't do this to me, all right.
I'm just telling you got to study, all right. Don't
twist my words. Damn kids, Yes, Paul.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Lastly, just on this theme, it's cliffs notes, Brussels sprouts.
Is it Ruth's Chris Steakhouse?
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Ruth Ruth Chris?
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Is there an apostrophe? Yeah, that's that's hard to say.
I know what's the genesis of that?
Speaker 2 (14:22):
I think it's Chris is maybe her son, I don't know.
Ruth took it over from Chris. You know what, Let
me take a break here. I mean we're getting into
a real you know, heavy top.
Speaker 6 (14:38):
Just lose the ego?
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Do you have to put Ruth on it? Just it's
Chris's steakhouse, so.
Speaker 6 (14:42):
You're the owner.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
But why do you have to get Ruth in there.
I could be just making that up. I might be
making that.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Like, man, this steakhouse is so Chris, you know it's
it's Ruth.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Is that right? Ruth's Steakhouse is like, it's not it's
Ruth Chris.
Speaker 1 (14:59):

Speaker 8 (15:32):
Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Undefeated Chargers. They've beaten the Chiefs, the Raiders, Broncos, they
got the Giants coming up, and then after that they've
got Washington's Jim Harbaugh back on the show. Who has
it better than we do? Nobody? I coach Rody Dan,
I'm doing great. I'm doing great. How about you?
Speaker 10 (16:31):
Yeah? Doing really really good, really really happy. I'm happy
about our team, our organization. There's a there's a never
give up, never give in personality, and that that bodes
well for uh. That's the kind of hearts champions are
made up. Makes me happy.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
How long will you wait to call your brother? After
that game last night.
Speaker 10 (16:56):
We've already texted, so I'm sure we'll talk sometime today.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
What do you add? Does he ask you or do
you volunteer?
Speaker 10 (17:08):
Oh? I think, Uh, I don't know. I don't know
how this one will go up. I mean, uh, he
saw a lot more than I did, and it was
a heck of a football game. I'm sure he knows,
he knows what his team needs this.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Uh, punching the ball out? Do you teach that to
your players?
Speaker 10 (17:28):
Yeah? Punch it out, rip it out? I mean, lawn more. Uh,
that that ball. Everybody's going for that ball.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
But when it seems like Peanut Tillman might have been
the first who was punching the ball out, but you know,
we're not. There's certain guys that are hard to tackle.
But is that the philosophy Derrick Henry is tough to
bring down to? Why not go for the most vulnerable
part of him and that's the ball?
Speaker 10 (17:54):
Yeah? I think you're bring up a great point. I mean,
if if something, if mister Tailman can do it, another
man can do it. Once, you know, once somebody sees
somebody do something that hasn't been done. Uh, then uh,
you know, see if I can do it that way.
You know. That's the uh that that's the mentality there.
It's it's it's across sports.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
But you're teaching that to your guys.
Speaker 10 (18:18):
Sure. Yeah, And and you teach every week. You show
the you show the ways that that the ball is
coming out and getting loose, you know, in the in
the running game from non aggressive angles. Uh, you know,
the quarterbacks the most at risk and the ball carrier.
(18:38):
You know the different ways that the that the ball
comes out. You show it every single week, you know,
for the for the sake of the ball carrier and uh,
for the sake of those trying to get it out.
And you know in the in the in the passing game,
in the interception turnovers, uh, tips and overs. Throws are
still the leading cause of turnovers in America.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Yeah, the Chiefs, Raiders and Broncos. You've beaten them. Which
out of those three was your best game so far?
Speaker 10 (19:07):
Oh that's uh, it's it's it's like your kids. You yeah,
I mean the wins. You love them all. Uh, you
love them all the same.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Weather has to be one where you know you say that.
Speaker 10 (19:20):
You know you say that as a parent. There's gotta
there's gotta be a favorite.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
There's gotta be one that I have favorite kids, Jim.
Speaker 10 (19:27):
The division wins definitely, Uh, the division wins, you know
the ones that that that it seems are better. You
know that you're you're you're right. There's there's some that
are better and those are the division wins.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Are you preparing for Jackson Dart to play this weekend
with the Giants?
Speaker 10 (19:44):
Uh, we'll prepare for for the Giants. Uh. And in
both you know, both both quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
How do you prepare? You prepare differently for Russell Wilson
and Jackson Dart.
Speaker 10 (19:59):
Uh, I mean somewhat. I mean some of the Uh,
I mean just off the you know, just off off
of what we've seen. I mean, Uh, Jackson Dart, the
quarterback driven kind of game as uh, you know, would
be more in play.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Talking to Jim Harball, they got the Giants coming up
on Sunday. The Herbert throw across his body. As a
former quarterback, how would you describe that throw? And was
was that scripted to throw it that way?
Speaker 10 (20:32):
No? That was that was a that was an extended
play justin it was extending the play out of the pocket.
I do have the I do have the adjective to
describe it, Uh, impossible. It was an impossible throw and
it was an impossible catch by Keenan Allen both both
Justin to his left, a quarterback to his left.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (20:55):
You know, as he's throwing it, he you know, runs
into the arm of the defender. So he's really got
about that much extension. And then and then it was
just then it's just risk. You know, it's that much
momentum plus risk. And you know the throws the ball,
(21:16):
what was it twenty five thirty yards as the crow
flies there and maybe thirty five with a defender covering Keenan, Uh,
you know, perfectly placed. And you know John Justin's Justin's throws,
you know, they never die at the at the receiver.
(21:38):
It's uh, it's got that it gets. When I catch
his ball pregame, it's like none I've ever caught before,
because when it's halfway to me, I know, I better
get my hands up and especially protect my face because
it just at the end it I think baseball pitchers
call it hot right when it's uh, when it's speeds
(22:00):
up at the end. And you know there's quarterbacks that
that when they throw I mean it'll hop and as
it's and go up, but his will hop and go
go straight on the line that it's going. It's it's Uh,
it's different than than anything I've ever seen. Pussy. Pussy
gets hit in the head. Uh as he's throwing it. Uh,
(22:25):
it was all of that impossible.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Was it a good throw though? If it like were
you on the sidelines going no, no, yes, yes.
Speaker 10 (22:37):
Uh no, I've really learned not to not to do
that anymore. There was, there was, there's times, there's time
in practice. There there's been times in games where I said,
no that he's you know, the guy's covered, but he's
got the ability. And we tell our receivers everybody running,
everybody alert, even if you think you're covered. You know
(22:59):
our quarterback can put the ball to a spot. You know,
he can hit the bullseye. It's to me, I think
of it as a handoff. You know, it's a thirty
five yard handoff or it's a forty five yard handoff.
I've seen it. You have fifty five yard handoff, and
that's what a forty yard handoff looks like. You know,
(23:22):
with the way he can he can put the ball
right on, right on the Bullseye.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
We had him on preseason and I asked him if
he would incorporate more running, kind of like Josh Allen,
because when I saw him in college, certainly in the
Rose Bowl, he looked really impressive running. And Steve Young
comes on the show and he says, there's so much
you know, real estate out there. If you got to
take advantage of that, you got to use your legs
(23:48):
and go get that. Is that being incorporated into the
game plan more this year than it has been before?
Speaker 10 (23:57):
Well, it has, It definitely has. Justin's making making so
many plays that way. He's he's always really been that
kind of quarterback. You know, there's there's nothing he's not
good at it. There's an old saying. I don't know
when I heard it, but uh, you know that God
doesn't give anybody a monopoly. Uh maybe except Justin Herbert.
(24:19):
Uh and in all seriousness, Uh. And he has people
ask me, you know, was he improved on this year?
You know, he's he's he's just always been great since
I've been here day one. You know, it's it's like
watching greatness every single day. What has he improved on?
He did get a mile an hour faster this this
(24:40):
off season. We previously had talked him on the GPS
at twenty point seven miles per hour, and then in
training camp he he took off ran and we got
him at twenty one point six miles an hour, so
almost a full second uh faster. And he works on
it every day. His training is is elite. He's he's conditioning,
(25:04):
he's he's it's speed training, and he has he has
gotten faster and uh and it's and it's showing up
in the games.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
When did you realize there was unfinished business in the NFL?
Speaker 11 (25:18):
Uh?
Speaker 10 (25:20):
When when I walked off the field at the at
the Super Bowl in twenty and thirteen, you know, I
was really proud of our team and what they did
to get there and uh and how they played in
the game, and felt like, you know, there'll be another day,
almost almost like, uh, who is the actor? Who's the
(25:43):
actor in Field of Dreams?
Speaker 8 (25:45):
Uh?
Speaker 10 (25:45):
Burt Lancaster, Uh, when he said he got his one
at bat in the major leagues and he walked off
the field and thought there would be other days. But
then there weren't any other days. So yeah, I thought
there would be other days. And then for a long
time that there wasn't any other days. And now with
(26:10):
the Chargers, with the team that that h has the
license and the ability to do it. I I'm I'm
feeling that there's going to be another day.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
How's your dad?
Speaker 10 (26:22):
He's good. Thanks for asking. He's he was. He was
in Baltimore the last the last two weeks, and UH
so been UH been talking with him, texting Texan this morning.
I haven't talked yet, but uh looking looking forward to that.
We we uh he my mom, we we talked about
every other day. So uh get I need to talk
(26:46):
to my dad today, see what Uh see how he's doing,
get his football perspective of of the game last night
and our game and uh and my son Jay's game.
Uh Jay Harball. How about the talk about the trifecta.
He's the special teams coach coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.
And they had a ninety five yard kickoff return for
(27:09):
a touchdown I think the longest maybe in Seahawks history
and maybe in the first in the last ten years.
They had they had oh that was a pump return
punt return ninety five and then a kickoff return for
sixty five and and they blocked a field goal. I mean,
that's that's the trifecta right there.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
Man, Well, didn't John proud of him? John started out
with special teams, didn't he dead? Yeah?
Speaker 10 (27:32):
Sure did. Uh. And it's uh, it's it's it's it's
the coach that uh probably I mean coaches everybody. Uh.
And Jason Jay's a great coach. We were together at
Michigan for seven years and Uh, I feel like, you know,
like in a proud way, in the in the in
(27:53):
the in the best kind of way that uh, you know,
I'm here and he's kind of like he's going, he's
going above me. He's good, he's better, and I mean,
uh getting better and is better and just ascending in
every way as a as a coach and a dad.
Speaker 5 (28:13):
You know.
Speaker 10 (28:13):
Just one of my favorite coaches that I've ever ever
worked with or been around. And that's what we want
with her kids, right, We want him to be We
want them to be better than us.
Speaker 2 (28:22):
Look at that smile on your face. Look at you
round dad. Do you think your dad could take me?
Speaker 10 (28:30):
Take you?
Speaker 2 (28:30):
Yeah, in a fight? Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 10 (28:34):
That's always the same. May That's a that's never really
resonated with me, Like who could who could? Why would
you want to fight? Let's let's be friends.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
We'll make an enemy.
Speaker 10 (28:44):
You can make a friend.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Maybe arm wrestled.
Speaker 10 (28:49):
I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
Don't you know what he.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
Came hey, when he came in that name?
Speaker 10 (28:54):
You're a really good shape. He's a really good shape.
I don't know that'd be uh yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
But he's eighty six. He's eighty six.
Speaker 10 (29:02):
It's a pretty good shap.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Yeah, I know that's what I'm saying. He could probably
take me. So, but you're right, we'll just be.
Speaker 10 (29:07):
Sure if I wanted to, I a wluld want to
tangle with him?
Speaker 8 (29:10):
Right?
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Did you ever?
Speaker 10 (29:12):
Right? He's one of the and my great grandfather Harball
was an amateur boxer, a little thunder, and then my grandfather,
Bill Harball was a boxer. He had eight eight fights,
eight or nine fights. And my dad was never a boxer.
But my dad can handle himself that way, and I've
(29:35):
seen it. I've seen Maybe that's the story for another show.
I've witnessed right to take care of himself.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
Yeah, I know that. I don't deny that. Congrats on
the start. Great to catch up with you, Thanks for
joining us. Thanks Dad, Thank you that's coach coach Harball.

Let's bring in Ryan Fitzpatrick NFL on Prime Video Thursday Night.
Thursday Night, it's the Seahawks and the Cardinals. Do you
agree with that Jared Golf a Super Bowl win makes
them a Hall of Fame quarterback? Wow?
Speaker 11 (30:21):
We're starting with the tough questions early. I think so
because it's Detroit as well. You know, I think there's
a lot of fan bases that would go crazy for that.
But Buffalo and Detroit, if there's a quarterback could bring
a Super Bowl to either of those, I think they'll
end up in the Hall of Fame. So's it's been
amazing what Jared has been able to do in Detroit
(30:45):
and now switching offensive coordinators. You know, we talked about
the genius of Ben Johnson and after the first game
against the Packers, will they be the same ever?
Speaker 6 (30:55):
Again? I think we got that answer. I think They're
going to be just fine.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
What do you take away from last night's game?
Speaker 11 (31:02):
I come out of that I think the Ravens are
going to be fine. But I out of that game
so impressed with Detroit and what Dan Campbell has done there,
the mentality that those guys play with. Really happy for
Kelvin Sheppard to step in at defensive coordinator, the emotion
and the passion that he shows on the sideline.
Speaker 6 (31:21):
But I think Detroit right now.
Speaker 11 (31:24):
A lot of people obviously are going to say the Eagles,
and he got to knock off the Eagles, But I
think the Detroits for me are my favorite team in
the NFC.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
The Ravens defense, they used to lead with their defense Rye.
That defense was non existent last night. That doesn't concern you,
It does.
Speaker 6 (31:40):
A little bit.
Speaker 11 (31:41):
I mean, if you look to the week before, they
made some big plays, you know, fumble return for a touchdown,
the interception returned down to the five by Wiggins. They
were missing Manabik. Last night they were missing van Ney.
I think we've seen this from the Ravens before, though.
I think we've seen the struggles at the beginning of
the year. I think they're too talented on defense at
(32:02):
all three levels. Are too talented to not figure this
thing out by year's end.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
More concerned about the Chiefs of the Ravens since they
meet each other next week.
Speaker 11 (32:12):
Yeah, I'm more concerned with the Chiefs, and I've been
concerned with the Chiefs for the last few years, and
I've been very wrong. I think a lot of us have.
But you know, I think everybody is saying, well, wait,
the Cavalry's coming. Rashie Rice is going to come back.
Worthy's going to be healthy. This offense is going to
get back on track and figure it out. But it
just seems like things are difficult for the Chiefs right
(32:34):
now on offense. And you know, they have a much
better defense statistically than the Ravens do right now. But
I just think the Ravens are a much better football
team and I think that'll show up on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
What's it like to go against the defense that you
know is bad?
Speaker 6 (32:52):
It's wonderful.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
It is wonder Cowboys defense. You you know, there's no
pass rusher, secondary, pretty shaky, like man, you probably have
to hide your giddiness. I think when you go on
the field, don't you.
Speaker 11 (33:06):
I think there's two different things as a quarterback. One
is to go into a game known you're going to
be able to run the ball at will and for
it to actually happen. That's when that's when it's great.
When you can have a relaxing game, when you can
get those five and ten yard plays and then a
chunk run here every now and again, and it opens
up the play action. You know, they're having to load
(33:28):
the box to try to do anything to stop the
run game, and you've got one on once on the
outside with big advantages.
Speaker 6 (33:34):
That's huge.
Speaker 11 (33:35):
But you know, in our Thursday night game, you saw
Miami and the Bills and there was they were running
it at will and then something happened at halftime and there.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
Was just a lowell.
Speaker 11 (33:46):
And so it's the beauty of the NFL where you
just you there's professionals on both sides of the balls.
And I think that the Cleveland Packers game reminded of
it of that this weekend where it's like, we think
we have this whole thing figured out, and the Chiefs
are falling down and the Ravens are no good anymore,
and all of a sudden, you know, the Browns go
(34:07):
ahead and beat the Packers, who were the Super Bowl
favorites two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
How often did you go to the line of scrimmage
and you go touchdown before the play.
Speaker 6 (34:18):
So I'll tell you I was.
Speaker 11 (34:19):
I had the privilege of playing with a lot of
great receivers. So if I could walk up and see
a one on one matchup with a go ball and
I had Mike Evans on the outside, or I had
a quarters look and I had Deshaun Jackson on a post.
DeAndre Hopkins was that way too, And then my twenty
fifteen season with Brandon Marshall, I did that quite a
(34:41):
bit and he got in the end zone quite a bit.
So I think a lot of that is based on
matchups and the guys that you have on the outside.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
How is quarterbacking changed in the last ten or fifteen years.
Speaker 11 (34:53):
It's changed a lot, and I think, you know, part
of it is protecting the quarterbacks. Less big hits easier,
the easier for these guys to stay healthy.
Speaker 6 (35:02):
It's still obviously going to hurt when you get hit.
Speaker 11 (35:05):
With a great shot of Miles Garrett hitting Joe Burrow
in the in the first week, where it's like, so
you want to play quarterback in.
Speaker 6 (35:12):
The NFL, this is what it looks like.
Speaker 11 (35:14):
But these rules have helped quarterbacks stay healthy and stay
on the field. And I think the second thing that's
a big difference. You've seen completion percentage jump way up,
and you know the air yards on these passes. A
lot of these offenses now getting the ball out on
the perimeter, having those plays where it's a swing pass
and there's a full back or a tight end as
(35:36):
the lead blocker out there.
Speaker 6 (35:38):
A lot of this is an extension of the run game.
Speaker 11 (35:40):
And so I think we're seeing a lot of quick passes,
a lot of short passes, and I don't know that
it's necessarily changing for the better. I like some of
that other stuff, and that's why you like teams like
Detroit and like to watch the play action and Jared
Goff throw it down the field and on fourth and
two the aman Rah play action. You know, trust in
him to make that throw. But it's changed, and I
(36:02):
don't know that it's changed for the better in terms
of all the quick short passes.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
I don't know why more quarterbacks don't start under center
that it feels like you can run play action, like
you can hide a little bit more. It's more deception
there instead of being in the gun. Help me understand
why we don't see more of that.
Speaker 11 (36:21):
Yeah, I just think because of the way that it's
being taught from a very young age now and in college,
you know, it's all about you have guys coming into
the league that haven't really had to be in a
huddle and haven't really had to bark out a cadence
or a snap count. But that kind of stuff it's
easier to do. You like the spread out, wide open
(36:42):
stuff in college, and so a lot of that occurs in.
Speaker 6 (36:44):
Shotgun, but it's a big difference.
Speaker 11 (36:48):
It's a big change for some of these guys coming
into the NFL, and it is a huge advantage to
be able to get under center.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
You've got the Seahawks and the Cardinals on Thursday night.
I thought Marvin Harrison Junior was foul and yards one
hundred catches. This is going to be easy. What the
hell has happened?
Speaker 11 (37:07):
I think part of it is a confidence issue. You know,
you saw in the last game he had two big drops.
One of them ended up not cost him because they
had a past interference calling the end zone. But just
you know, stuff plays that he's probably made since he
was five years old, and so that happens to guys
sometimes where you just you fall out of confidence. So
(37:29):
I think it's the job of Jonathan Gannon, especially the
job of Kyler Murray to try to bring him up
out of this and to breathe life and breathe confidence
in him because he is he's a good player. I
think the biggest knock on him so far, and I
live in Arizona, so I've been hearing a lot of
it is, you know, his inability to make that contested
catch and to do it consistently. He obviously dropped a
(37:52):
couple where he was opened this last weekend, but going
up and being strong and using your hands. And I
think that the hard thing is the comparison is Larry Fitzgerald. Right,
he comes in and they want him to be the
franchise guy, like Larry was in the face of the
franchise for seventeen years, and he hasn't lived up to
that billing yet, but.
Speaker 6 (38:09):
He has the talent.
Speaker 11 (38:10):
So it's still early and I hope he can he
can make himself come out of the scene and gain
some confidence back.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
Would you put Jackson Dart in there for a home
game against a better team, the Chargers, or on the
road against a worse team the Saints.
Speaker 6 (38:25):
See I've always had it circled, so we have we
have week six.
Speaker 11 (38:30):
I think let's see one, two, three, four. Yeah, our
Week six game is the Giants, which is a Thursday night,
And so being a guy that has started as the
bridge quarterback for Plunketting, you look at the bye week
first of all, and I think their bye week is
week fourteen, so it wasn't gonna happen then.
Speaker 6 (38:48):
And then you look at the Thursday night games.
Speaker 11 (38:49):
We can get a couple extra days of practice, so
I've always had after our game circled, week seven would
be his first start. You know, It's it's difficult obviously
to play this position, and Russell Wilson there's a lot
of things that he's going to try to cover up
in terms of maybe the line play, the lack of
(39:12):
threats on the outside, the running backs, whatever it is.
Speaker 6 (39:15):
It's nice for Jackson dark.
Speaker 11 (39:17):
To be able to sit and kind of watch him
operate a little bit and get beat up. Their schedule
is really tough, so he'll be in there soon though,
and I think there's a.
Speaker 6 (39:25):
Lot of excitement around him.
Speaker 11 (39:26):
We were able to do his preseason game and what
he will bring is a little bit more mobility.
Speaker 6 (39:31):
To that position.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Fitch and Wit a wave original. Wherever you get your podcast,
you guys chopping it up, telling stories, giving dad energy there.
How much fun has that been. It's been a lot
of fun.
Speaker 11 (39:47):
I put off the podcast for a couple of years
and then what I realized was I finally found the
right person to do it with.
Speaker 6 (39:54):
And Andrew Whitworth and.
Speaker 11 (39:55):
I were teammates way back in seven eight for the
Cincinnati Bengals, and our friendship has kind of come back
around after we started working for Amazon together.
Speaker 6 (40:05):
But we love it.
Speaker 11 (40:07):
We just had Dion Dawkins on yesterday and to be
able to sit down and talk with some of these guys,
some of them we have forged friendships with already and
some of them just really getting to know for the
first time. And Big Schnow was one of those guys.
But what a character he is and what a moment
he's having with the Buffalo Bills. And he's kind of
seen it all the last eight years with that franchise,
(40:29):
but he's been with Josh from the beginning. So it
was cool to see and listen to some of those
stories with the good to.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
Talk to you have fun on Thursday. Great to catch
up with you again.
Speaker 6 (40:39):
Thanks Dan.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
It's Ryan Fitzpatrick, It's Fitch in Wit, a Wave original
wherever you get your podcast. Andrew Whitworth very funny guy.
They got Seahawks Cardinals on Thursday night.
