Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hope you had a great weekend. Gangs all here ready
to go. The lovely and talented Todd, Fritz Seaton, Marv Paulie,
yours truly, and the backroom guys. A lot of football
to chop up. Baseball golf. Eagles over the Buccaneers, and
Chiefs handled the Ravens, Rams over the Cold Steelers beat
the Vikings, and we had a tie last night. I

(00:27):
think that's the highest scoring tie in the history of
the NFL. There's a tie that I believe it was
forty three forty three in the AFL, and it might
have been with the Boston Patriots, if memory serves me correctly.
But in the history of the NFL, forty to forty
is the highest tie in history. Football coming up tonight,

(00:50):
the Jets are on the road but only a two
and a half point underdog against the Dolphins, and the
Bengals are getting seven and a half at the Broncos.
I was thinking about the Bengals after watching what the
Ravens did the Browns and the Steelers. The Steelers are
going to have another winning record. I don't think they're
a dominant team, but they could steal the division. If

(01:12):
you look at the Ravens, that defense has been terrible,
and even with Lamar Jackson in in Kansas City, they
were getting blown out. Now he may have an injury
that'll keep him out for a little while, which brings
me to tonight. The Bengals might be wasting a year.
If you have a chance to go out and get
Kirk Cousins or Russell Wilson, he's going to give you

(01:36):
a better chance because now if I look at the division,
the Ravens don't feel like Super Bowl contender anymore. You
got the Steelers, who are are going to be good.
I don't think they're great, but they're beatable. And then
you have the Browns. But if I'm the Bengals, you
signed up everybody, your best defender, your best receivers, everybody's

(01:58):
under contract. If you got a quarterback in there who
could be an upgrade, you could steal that division. And
Jake Browning is not played well. I think that they're
confident with him. I don't think they want to spend
the money either. With Kirk Cousins Russell Wilson, you could
probably have. You know, maybe it's a fifth round pick

(02:21):
or a sixth round pick, but you could get him.
And if you're the Giants, you like what you saw
with Jackson Dart and you got Jameis Winston as his backup.
But I was wondering about that. If you're the Bengals,
do you survey now that division? Everybody's been outscored in
that division and it doesn't seem we thought it was
going to be a great division right now it's not.

(02:42):
But take a shot. Do you want to waste another year?
And Joe Burrow maybe could come back in the playoffs,
maybe with that turf toe surgery. But I was thinking
about that that that might be something. If you're the Bengals, Okay,
you know, we should kick the tires on this because

(03:02):
we have a chance here, a lot better chance than
people thought. All right, after what happened over the weekend,
the Super Bowl odds updated by DraftKings. The Bills are
the favorites, followed by the Eagles, Packers and Ravens are tied,
and then closely behind is the Lions and then the Chiefs.

(03:23):
Interesting that the Chiefs now feel like, okay, you get
Xavier Worthy back and all of a sudden, because that
offense wasn't very threatening. Now all of a sudden, you'd
give Mahomes a playtoy. Rashid Rice will be coming back soon.
Now we're going to get a true sense of is
Kansas City still that elite team or one of those

(03:43):
elite team teams? The Chargers they charged you were three
to oh, and this is you know, you go west
coast to East coast, you have an early call time,
you're going against a rookie, and thought Jackson Dart played
well enough to keep them in the game, justin Herbert

(04:04):
did not play well. And you know it's three and
oh against Owen three. That was the surprising part of
that that the the Giants are the first oh and
three team to beat a three and oh team since
two thousand and eight. Stat of the Day brought to

(04:36):
you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the
Dan Patrick Show. But if you look at this, if
you're a Giants fan and you go, okay, we didn't
like our quarterback situation. All of a sudden, maybe Jackson
Dart is our future. And although they lost Molik Neighbors,
he's probably gone for the season. You got a really

(04:57):
good defensive line got rookie contracts here. I mean the
neighbors thing is big because he's a great receiver. And
when I saw him go down, I thought, uh oh,
I got an acl here. But Jackson Dart athletic enough
keep things alive. He's got enough swag. You know, he's

(05:17):
not afraid. And I like what I saw him, so
did his head coach. Here's Brian Dable talking about Jackson Dart.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Look, I got a lot of confidence in our rookie quarterback.
But he's a rookie quarterback, so there's going to be
mistakes that be made. We know that there'll be more
next week. There was some this week. It's not going
to be perfect. Kid's a competitor. I'm sure he'll be
the first one to tell you there's a lot that
he can do better. We got to continue to help
him do it better.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
But like his traits. I like his toughness. I'm glad
we got him.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
I like when I see I can't imagine what Russ
is thinking on the sidelines. It's like a boy. He
had a touchdown run, touchdown pass and Johnny so happy
I made this possible for him.

Speaker 5 (06:02):
Yeah, yes, but with attitude and gratitude, you can get
past these situations.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Well, yeah, he's going to have to have both of
those to be on the sidelines there.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
I would imagine in the NFL there is no more
supportive backup than on any team than Russ.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
He will give you the impression that yes, yes, one
he will no doubt, yes, the Cowboys and the Packers.
It's one of those where you have a great meal
and then there's no dessert. It was like, man, that
was good. You know I'd like to have a nice
piece of carrot cake. Oh I'm sorry, we don't have dessert.

(06:41):
Forty to forty and it was fun. I thought the
Cowboys were going to win the game. We had a
semi streaming party last night with Shyan Irving and Dylan
Marv was here and I said to Shay, hey, you
should feel good. I think the Cowboys is going to
win this game. Go Danny, and I go, no, I
do I think They're going to win? And then at

(07:03):
halftime Dylan and Shay were like, do you really believe?
I said, yes, I think the Cowboys are gonna win
the game. And then they were going to take the
halftime odds. I don't know what they bad or you know,
if anybody won anything. But we were watching and I thought, Okay,
they stood that first quarter or so, and then I thought,
all right, they're they're answering back. And if I'm a

(07:24):
Packer fan, my defense is supposed to be great. It
wasn't great. Dallas's defense is bad, and we knew that
worse than bad? What is what is worse than bad?

Speaker 6 (07:37):
A sieve.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
It just felt like anytime Jordan Love wanted to throw deep,
you know, it was like, oh, there were two guys
that you know, that first pass that they threw, there
were two guys that were open. Somebody needs to tell
Golden this ain't Missouri, this ain't college. You can get
away those things when you're returning a kick or he

(08:03):
got rocked on that play, absolutely crushed. What are you
doing spinning? I know he did a little purowett and
then he also caught a path and then he tried
to go, you know, like I'm gonna reverse field, and
I go, you can't get away with that.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
By the time his eyes came back around, he just
saw a gigantic man's face helmet to helmet with him, and.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
That was, yeah, brutal. It's like but you know, it's
a tie, and a lot of people probably were like,
wait a minute, Yeah, in the regular season, you can
have a tie, not in the postseason. Here is Jerry
Jones talking about a tie and taking a shot at

(08:48):
his former player. I don't almost play.

Speaker 7 (08:51):
That game was probably a great game for the NFL
as far as the showcase for the game and competition,
because you had out in quarterback play, you had some
very talented people out there playing.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
You certainly had.

Speaker 7 (09:06):
One of the most expensive players in the history of
the NFL out there playing. And so I guess everybody
was going to take a look tonight and decide to
see what're fall there.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Why why is he taking a shot at mikeel Parsons here?

Speaker 8 (09:23):
Yeah, Paul, if you watch that game, the Parsons got
bottled up for the most of the game. And by
the way, I'd like to file a little protest, that
was not a sack on that last play.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
No, it wasn't.

Speaker 8 (09:32):
Dak Prescott was running forward, which does not nullify a sack,
but he just crossed the line of scrimmage, and I
looked at the spot. The spots a foot ahead, So
that means if you cross the line of scrimmage is
not a sack. Yeah, but a lot of people cash
that check yesterday.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Yeah, but it was. I think it is over.

Speaker 6 (09:51):
It is over.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Under was three quarters of a sack. Does that sound right, Marvin? Yep?
I know Shay and Dylan one took the over, one
took the under. But yeah, no, it's fun to watch,
you know. It's certainly back and forth. It was just
forty to forty yes time.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
You said it was like not having getting dessert afterwards.
I would go even a step further, especially for those
of us on the East Coast that stayed up fully
after midnight. That's like being handed the bill as well
at the rest of what Oh, you're not get deserted.
You're paying for everybody sitting there and watching it at
any time.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Here is Micah Parsons talking about his late game tackle
with the game on the line.

Speaker 9 (10:29):
It's just all about not letting my teammates down, going
one hundred percent every play. You know, I owe it
to every person in organization, every person in that locker room,
to get my absolute best every time. So I don't
look at the play as like you know, I think
like I'm here and on this podium because I'm supposed
to make that play, not because it's like, oh my god,

(10:49):
he made a play, Like I'm supposed to make that play.
I'm supposed to help our defense. That's the reason why
I was brought here. Like making places where I'm supposed
to do. Taking eight over games is what I'm supposed
to do. I don't think like I should be rewarded
for that play, like that's the reason why I'm here.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
I agree should have made some more plays that would
have helped. But that defense, I was a little surprise
there that and you know, and they're not they don't
have CD. Lamb. Pickens played great, Dak played really well.
I thought that, you know, once again, offense seems to

(11:26):
be okay. But CD's going to be out for a
few more weeks. But uh, Pickens played well, yeah, Paul.

Speaker 8 (11:32):
At the end of overtime, the Packers cruise down the
field and third yeah, and just they're all set. But
then on third down they don't make it. So it's
fourth and fourteen, and it appeared that they didn't even
consider going forward on fourth and fourteen. Why don't you
go for the win there if you're the Packers. Now,
I gues it's a horrible defense.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
Yeah, you got to come out with something. You can't
come out with a loss. That's too far to go
for fourth down. I know it's the Cowboys, but I
and you're supposed to go for the win on the road,
but it's got to And I don't know what the
analytics would say with that, and maybe it says no
certain yardage you don't or certain place on the field.

(12:11):
I don't know that, but I understood what they were doing.
I didn't like that they were going to do that,
but that's just me as a fan. You can't come
out with a loss. You can't put up forty and
come away with the loss. And I think if you're
Green Bay, you got some work to do here. And

(12:32):
I don't think we thought that after we saw what
they did to Detroit, and Detroit all of a sudden
has come back and I mean, granted they're playing the Browns.
We don't know what we have with Minnesota. I think
that's another one to keep an eye on, because you
know this isn't JJ McCarthy yet. Carson Wentz is a

(12:53):
good backup quarterback, but he made some really bad mistakes
late in the game. There the numbers are deceiving there.
But now you got to wonder JJ McCarthy, you're going
to be able to play and you know, injury prone.
That's a good team. They're ready to win. Now it's
sort of like the Bengals that you know. Now you've

(13:16):
got to find out do you bring in another quarterback?
Are you comfortable with Carson Wentz. I don't know JJ
McCarthy's time frame here, but watching that, I was like,
I don't know, I'm not quite sure. All right, we'll
come back. We'll get to our poll question. There's baseball
to talk about, golf to talk about, college football to
talk about, and we will talk to you about that

(13:38):
with Best and Worst of the weekend. What you saw
that you liked you didn't like. Shan Irving will join
us to recap the tie. We're back after this.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio w.

Speaker 10 (13:57):
App Hey, We're Cavino and Rich Fox Sports. That's radio
every day five to seven pm Eastern. But here's the thing,
we never have enough time to get to everything we
want to get to.

Speaker 11 (14:06):
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for. Yeah, you blubber list in me.

Speaker 10 (14:20):
Well you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

Speaker 11 (14:25):
Well, it's a Covino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk
life and relationships. And if Rich and I are arguing
about something or we didn't have enough time, it will
continue on our after show called over Promised.

Speaker 10 (14:39):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over Promised and also Uncensored by
the way, so maybe we'll go at it even a
little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast
of all time.

Speaker 11 (14:49):
There you go, over Promising, and remember you could see
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen Over Promised with
Covino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or
wherever you get your podcast.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Gerald McCoy, NFL Network analyst, former defensive tackle and a
six time Pro bowler joining us on the program. Good
to see you again. Give me the science behind blocking
field goals, punts, extra points because we're we're at a
historical rate so far.

Speaker 6 (15:18):
Yeah, this is insane. Uh.

Speaker 12 (15:21):
First off, I think that I think what we're seeing
right now is we're seeing the importance of all three
phases of the game.

Speaker 6 (15:31):
You know, we preach it as side of the building offense.

Speaker 12 (15:33):
Defense, special teams, and uh punt team, flipping the field
punt block, you know, having an opportunity to block the punt.

Speaker 6 (15:42):
We've seen it. Unfortunately with my books.

Speaker 12 (15:44):
Yesterday kind of was a big switching and changing the
game with us versus the Eagles.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (15:49):
And then you got field goal protection. Then you got
field goal block. And what a lot of people don't
know is we actually draw plays for these things. So
it's whether it's right block, it's left block, it's middle block.

Speaker 6 (16:02):
There's different things. So when you go through the.

Speaker 12 (16:07):
Motions in practice, this is why the coaches, you know,
like we were so focused on, oh well, we got
these plays on offense, we got these players on defense.
When we do special teams, O line, D line is
just like, oh, okay, well we're just gonna whatever. Well,
when you take it serious, you see what can happen,
and when you are trying of bs and through it is.

(16:30):
These are the things that can happen if you don't
if you the end blocker on the end of field
goal pro and you don't get your hand all the
way out you've seen yesterday, they can knock your hand
down and turn that corner on you. These are elite athletes,
these are best athletes in the world. So if you're
not taking this part serious, then this is what can happen.
But you see how much the third phase of the

(16:54):
football can change the game.

Speaker 6 (16:56):
Man, This is this is this is insane what we're
seeing right now.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
And you know, so it's maybe I'm trying to think
of an analogy in another sport where this happens and
then it changes the momentum, you know, whether it's a
home run or a dunk or something where it just
feels like, oh my god, they blocked the kick or
so I.

Speaker 12 (17:18):
Don't know, well, uh, Lebron's blocked in the finals versus
Golden State, you know they if Andre Goodala gets that
layer in the j R. Smith doesn't swum down, Lebron
doesn't come do to chase down, then we never see
the Kyrie shot.

Speaker 6 (17:35):
The game probably goes away. If if Monald Ganobli.

Speaker 12 (17:42):
Hits those free throws versus Miami, you know, then we
never see Lebron miss the three. Chris Boss tipping back
to reality, who hit the historic three?

Speaker 6 (17:52):
You know?

Speaker 12 (17:52):
I think those are different examples of if this portion
of the game, which is free throws or chase down block,
you know, Uh, field goals and punts are really like
because you're sitting still, the game stops. So that's similar
to shooting free throws. You're sitting here. These free throws
are crucial, So I need to make these free throws,
you know what I'm saying, or get a get a

(18:15):
you know, a timely block like what Lebron did, So
I would I would correlate it to situations like that.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Should we settle for ties have ties in the NFL
during the old season?

Speaker 6 (18:27):
No, No, I don't like ties. We don't like ties.
It up?

Speaker 2 (18:30):
What would you do?

Speaker 6 (18:31):
Uh?

Speaker 12 (18:32):
They need to try and well shoot. College football is
taking some of the NFL mold. We might as well
do some of the stuff that they do. Just go
don't put it over twenty five and let's see what happened.
You know, like, but we got to find a way
to not end these games and ties, man, because ties
just that that that don't work out.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
I think everybody was all in on the Packers after
what they did to the Lions, and then all of
a sudden you lose to the Browns and then you tie.

Speaker 6 (18:59):
Always everybody ooh, I was not.

Speaker 12 (19:04):
Okay, Well that was not because it was two weeks
and I kept saying, it's two weeks.

Speaker 6 (19:09):
And here's why I kept.

Speaker 12 (19:10):
Saying, you can't go all in. It's because after two weeks,
think about what took place. Okay, they had the mic,
it comes in. It's like, oh man, first off, this
is already playoff team. It was already top ten defense.
They were twenty second in pressure rate. So you go out,
you address the need. You bring in the guy who's

(19:32):
led the league in pressure since he set foot in
the NFL. Of course your pass rush is going to
be better. But what happened They won two games that
they were favorite to win at home. Everybody's like, oh,
look at what they're doing. Paying attention to what happened.
They had a Sunday game. They played a Thursday game
at home. They didn't have to travel. All they had

(19:54):
to do was just go and roll into it with
the regular operation.

Speaker 6 (19:58):
We hadn't seen him hit the road. We hadn't seen
them travel, we hadn't seen anything. We hadn't seen them tested.

Speaker 12 (20:03):
So when people was like, oh, the Packers are the
best team right now, the Packers of the I'm like,
how they the best team? We haven't seen them do anything.
How are they jumping to the Eagles? How are they jumping Buffalo?
How are they jumping on these people? And that's why
I said, we can't just put them above Philly when
we've seen Philly be tested. We haven't seen Green Bay
be tested for us to be saying they're the best.

(20:25):
What happened as soon as they hit the road. They
lost to Cleveland. Now we've just seen them hit the road.
I thought that they were gonna blow Cowboys up. I
think most of America thought that this was going to
be a blowout game.

Speaker 6 (20:37):
But we've seen what happened.

Speaker 12 (20:38):
So this is why I always say, you can't crown
people super early. You gotta let the season play up.
I have a philosophy you do not know who's who
until about week nine of the season. Then you start
seeing like some consistency. Okay, this is what they can do,
this is what they can't do. Okay, we've seen that.
This is kind of like because I remember one time

(20:59):
we seen in Pittsburgh Still is going eleven and oh,
but everybody was like, I don't know, that's kind of
like a that's a fluff eleven and oh, that's not
a real eleven and oh team. So you know, you
gotta let the see them play out. But I haven't
been sold on Green Bay after two weeks, like most
people were.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
What concerns you the most about the Ravens defense.

Speaker 12 (21:22):
I know they've had injuries, but even with even when
they were healthy, you got to keep people at the
end zone, man.

Speaker 6 (21:31):
And it doesn't matter how.

Speaker 12 (21:35):
Many because before yesterday they were averaging thirty seven points
a game.

Speaker 6 (21:39):
Thirty seven points. It's the National Football League.

Speaker 12 (21:42):
If your offense is getting thirty seven points a game,
you shouldn't be losing.

Speaker 6 (21:46):
That's just reality. But also.

Speaker 12 (21:51):
Offensively, when you pack the middle of the field, which
is what Kansas City did. You packed the middle of
the field, you take away all those crossing routes in
the middle of the field.

Speaker 6 (22:00):
For Lamar, he struggles.

Speaker 12 (22:02):
To push the ball outside, outside the numbers and make
throws where he has to make throws outside the numbers.
And that's all Kansas City did yesterday. They made him
make throws outside the numbers. And then you get exact.
You're worthy back. You score points. You can't depend always
depend on your offense to score points like this every day.

(22:24):
Look at what the Philadelphia Eagles did. They are finding
different ways to win. They won yesterday. The offense wasn't great,
but what they do they got to score on special
teams and the defense was lights out.

Speaker 6 (22:38):
Your offense is not always going.

Speaker 12 (22:40):
To give you thirty seven points, so the other phase
of the gay, other two phase of the game have
to show up, and defense is just it's bad. Man,
it looks thirty. They were giving up thirty points a
game and yesterday was just even worse.

Speaker 6 (22:53):
So it just doesn't look good.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
Gerald McCoy, NFL Network analysts. You can catch NFL Network
bringing you NFL Game Day kickoff at seven am Eastern
the Vikings and the Browns in London on NFL Network. Well, okay,
given that the Ravens are banged up, not a good
defensive team. How do we then look at the Chiefs
because are the Chiefs that good? Yes, yes they are,

(23:20):
But the Ravens were that bad though Gerald.

Speaker 6 (23:23):
Yeah, but also.

Speaker 12 (23:25):
Okay, the Chiefs over the past three years have been
a lot of people say carried by the defense. But
as long as fifteen is taking the snaps, they're good.
As long as Andy Reeves calling the players, they're good.
We have to look at all the revolving door of
the offensive line. Now they got the off of the

(23:46):
line of place and the first three weeks Patrick Mahomes
as great as he is, he's not Lamar Jackson. He
can't be leading your team in rushing. He can't do that.
We're they able to do yesterday. They're able to run
the ball one player. One player changed everything. They put

(24:06):
a Davie Worthy back in the lineup and it opened
up the entire offense. They were able to do so
many different things. Well, you're gonna watch back and watch them.
With the field of the Eagles. The Eagles were being
overly aggressive with the Kansas City Chiefs water receivers because
they weren't afraid of anybody getting open. They weren't afraid
of getting beat deep downfield, so they were being overly aggressive. Well,

(24:29):
you bring Davie Worthy back and look at everything opens up. Okay,
I understand it was the Baltimore Ravens defense, but it's
not just about.

Speaker 6 (24:38):
How you're seeing. What you're seeing is how it's being done.

Speaker 12 (24:42):
Patrick Mahomes didn't look under durest. He didn't look like
he was pressing. Get the ball out both, get the
ball out here and Zay be Worthy here, get open,
beat over the top. So now what they're gonna do
is they're gonna get healthy and then they're gonna get
a sheet rice back and then this is where we
start to see. Okay, the defense is in place. That's

(25:04):
one thing we haven't had to worry about Kansas City.

Speaker 6 (25:07):
I would be.

Speaker 12 (25:07):
Worried about Kansas City if the defense was bad. The
defense hasn't been bad. The defense has been in place.
They just haven't been able to put up points like
they normally do. Well, now they're going to start scoring points,
and once they get their whole group back, then we're
gonna start seeing the Kansas City that feared everybody again.
So I think Kansas City is legit. That's why I

(25:28):
was never worried about them losing those couple of games,
because they lost to the Chargers who hit the ground running.

Speaker 6 (25:34):
Justin Herbert is coming to us own.

Speaker 12 (25:35):
I know he struggled yesterday, but I still believe he's
gonna have a great season. They lost to the Champs. Okay,
then they won against New York. Obviously it was New York,
but we see they not as bad as you think.

Speaker 6 (25:47):
We've seen it.

Speaker 12 (25:47):
Yesterday it was just who they had at quarterback, but
then they won yesterday at home.

Speaker 6 (25:54):
Now they're gonna get healthy, I think.

Speaker 12 (25:55):
Can I believe that Kansas City is they gonna get
back to being a ey teens and a rookies.

Speaker 2 (26:02):
Cadence said, the line of scrimmage quarterback different, Like do
they sound like rookies or sound young when they're calling
out plays at the line of scrimmage?

Speaker 12 (26:14):
So I wouldn't say that they say young more than
it's not as complex. It's like there's no switch up.
So Drew Brees used.

Speaker 6 (26:22):
To yellow Lady, old lady, yellow Lady.

Speaker 12 (26:23):
He says he would switch it up, and then he
would he would have different colors, and then he would
kill kill, Kill, he's doing a lot at the line,
so you never know what's going to happen. Cam Newton
Ready White Lady. He never would snap right on that.
He would switch. He would switch it up. Matt Ryan
would switch as up. When you go against he's it.

(26:45):
That's why Peyton say, oh maha, everybody thought the ball
was coming. He said, omaha, no it wasn't. So when
you have a rookie, you know after a few snaps
after he say this, and he said, is the boss coming?
Because he's not. He has so much other things to
worry about. He can't manipulate the snapcount yet. Aaron Rodgers
had a phenomenal snap camp. They can manipulate the snap

(27:08):
camp because they've done so much other things for so long.
The snapcount is just something that they add to their repertoire.
And they're too bad rookies, you just especially if they
if you at home, Oh it's rookies are the easiest
people to jump the snap camp. They're not changing nothing
because they don't. It's not it's not. It's too much
going on up here. They trying to see, especially if

(27:30):
your comfort is doing all this, and then if I
know what I played, if I'm playing a rookie. Their
coaches told him that guy right there, make sure you
keep your eyes on him. So now I know he's
not gonna switch a snap camp because he's seeing all this,
but he knows I'm sitting right here too, and Miles
Garrett is over there. No rookie is gonna look and
see Miles Garrett and be thinking about it. Let me

(27:50):
switch the snapcamp. They can be thinking, all right, Miles
is right here. Let me But that's what rookies, so,
you know. So that's the difference. It's not that they
sound like rookies, is they're not gonna manipulate the snack
camp like the vets will.

Speaker 2 (28:08):
How did Aaron Rodgers sound?

Speaker 6 (28:12):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (28:13):
What was his what was his cadence?

Speaker 12 (28:16):
Aaron Rodgers? Uh, Aaron Rodgers was green at so when
he would when he would when his was so aggressive
that you lose sight of all the other things that's
taking place. And that's why he caught so many people
with that free play. He was phenomenal with. Aaron Rodgers

(28:39):
is phenomenal at it's catching people on the field with
twelve men. He's he's great at catching people subbing. So
that's what you gotta be careful with him as your subs.
If you're gonna sub as soon as the play is over,
you got to make sure you know who's coming in
and who's coming out. You cannot be getting off the field.
And then you just gotta be patients, especially when they're

(29:01):
at home. When they're at home is when he gives everybody.
If you go back and look, well he was in
Green Bay when they were at home is when he
got most of those free plays because it sat count
is so aggressive and he could catch you off guard.
Russell Wilson actually has a very good hard counter's lipt.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
What's it sound like?

Speaker 6 (29:20):
It's a loud and aggressive that this is real. This
is real, Chris Man, I don't know what you're going through.
That's all we got. Chapel the night before dog Shore.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Oh, thanks for sharing. Great to talk to you again, Yes, sir,
thank you so much. That's a Gerald McCoy, NFL Network
analyst and former defensive tackle, six times Pro bowler.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
Ohio State went to Washington, and they made it look
a whole lot easier than they thought they would. Old
Miss over LSU, Bama at Georgia with the win. Florida
State loses to Virginia. Notre Dame with a big win
against Arkansas A and m over Auburn and Indiana over
Iowa make way for Rick Neuheisel, CBS Sports former college

(30:28):
football coach. With all of that being said, the most
important win of the weekend was turned in by Alabama.

Speaker 13 (30:37):
A fantastic win for Kaylin de Boor the Alabama faithful
now have renewed hope and renewed faith in what Caitlin's
getting done there. And also for Ty Simpson, who gets
now the kind of spotlight that he deserves because I
don't think he was even bad in the Florida State game.

(31:00):
I thought he actually played pretty darn well. He's a
big time player, and I think the Alabama win was sensational.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
Ohio State going to Washington, and I thought it was
going to be more of a game. I really thought
Washington would put up a better test. But does it
say more about Ohio State or Washington, Well, it says
a lot about Matt Patricia first. First of all, we've
known that Ryan Day has this chameleon ability to see

(31:30):
what the opponent can do and then adjust a game
plan without thinking about his offensive numbers. When you have
a guy like Jeremiah Smith, you've got to get him
the ball. But he doesn't worry about getting Jeremiah Smith
the ball. He worries about making the game go in
the direction that he wants to with his best chance
to win. And he just basically suffocated Demon Williams. They

(31:52):
had played this cage technique, wouldn't let him get out
at halftime. He had zero yards rushing, and that takes
a huge piece of Jetfish's offense away from him. So
I think Matt Patricia has adapted to college football beautifully.
I know it is a big story when Jim Knowles left,
but Patricia is really doing a great job at Ohio State.

(32:13):
Is there a great team in college football?

Speaker 13 (32:16):
I don't know. I don't think so now. Maybe one
will evolve, but right now, no one's dominant, which makes
the postseason as we look ahead, seem so juicy. It
is going to have so many plot twists as we
get closer and closer to it, which I think we're
all here for.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
Is being good good enough at Penn State.

Speaker 13 (32:40):
Well it obviously it is, right, he's been there for
this double digit years and he's four and twenty one
against top ten teams. But they still are there. And
I think the fact that they came back in that
game down seventeen to three and got it into overtime
and look good in overtime, other than the they aren't

(33:00):
passed that gets picked. I think as long as they
get to ten and two, they're going to be a
college football playoff team and then it's again seating. But
there's going to be always this shadow and this cloud
hanging over both the quarterback and the head coach until

(33:20):
they fix it.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
But if let's let's look at this hypothetically, if you
had that record at Michigan, you're not keeping your job.
If you had that record at Ohio State, you're not
keeping your job. Alabama Georgia fair right.

Speaker 13 (33:37):
Yeah, that's fair. I just think they see and especially
with the guys that leave Penn State and go off
to the next level, how many quality players. I just
think that they see enough good that what are we
going to do? That's different if we go away from
it and they give they give the home crowd at

(33:59):
least enough hope in these games they're not trounced so
that they keep coming back, and they keep coming back
wearing the same outfit. It's incredible they keep wearing that white.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
Rick new Heisl's CBS Sports college football analyst and former
head coach, Do you have a quarterback crush?

Speaker 13 (34:18):
I love this angelic assassin Julian saying, you know, he
looks like he hasn't shaved yet, but the guy is
a phenomenal talent. And I really love Demon Williams, the
kid that was on the other side. I mean, you
talk about a guy who can throw it and then
get his legs involved. Jed's gonna have to find some

(34:38):
more formations and ways to get his legs involved because
taking them away is a bad equation for the Dogs.
They got a tough game this week against Maryland.

Speaker 2 (34:48):
Fernando Mendoza love him. I love him.

Speaker 13 (34:51):
Okay, I feel like I want to put on my
ABBA's Greatest Hits album. You know, Fernando Fernando. Now, Dan,
you'll find yourself humming along Lane Kiffin? Is this a
different year for him? And if so, well, what.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
Good for Lane?

Speaker 6 (35:11):
Listen?

Speaker 13 (35:11):
This Trinidad. Chambliss is a great story too. A year
ago he was playing for Farris State in D two
and now he's he's the toast of Hotty Toddy Town
and it's it's a wonderful story. I mean, Glaine's even
got his daughter out there doing reconnaissance. So this is
a this is a team effort for the Kiffins. I
don't know if it sounds like you're all in on

(35:33):
ole miss. I was worried about the fact that they
gave up so many yards rushing. They were, you know,
came into this game against LSU giving up one hundred
and ninety yards a game on the ground without necessarily
a formidable schedule. We'll wait and see, but that was
a Yeoman effort. And now the hot seats Brian Kelly
because those those folks in the boy you don't like

(35:57):
not having This was supposed to be a really good
offense right with nuss Meyer and coming back, and it
just isn't. The defense has been fixed, but the offense
now is not coming along for the ride.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
Yeah, it feels like and maybe this is the Kaelin
de Boor feel that he'll be going through that with
Brian Brian's not one of them, even though he has
a great resume. It just feels like it's not weak
to week as it is with you know, Alabama. But
I don't know, it just feels odd with Brian Kelly

(36:28):
and Baton Rouge.

Speaker 13 (36:29):
And he's he's you know, he's got little Lord Fauntleroy
type of personality. He's you know, he's the the all
knowing and it's just not not It's fine with the results,
but when the results aren't there, they're going to start
picking at one. It's not one of them.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
As they say. I'm curious what you think of Diego
Pavilla at Vandy because I've watched him now and he
minds me of Baker Mayfield, like he's just got he
plays with it, Ghip. Have you met have you met
him down?

Speaker 13 (37:01):
I've had him on the show. He is so charming.
He is a absolute I mean, you just want to
put your arms around him. He's a little guy, he's
not not a big guy, and yet you can't help
but love him. And Clark Lee saw this goes back
to when he was with Jerry Kill at New Mexico State.

(37:22):
They went into Auburn and beat Auburn thirty one to
ten and beat him like soundly. Right, but it was
not an accident, wasn't a bunch of turnovers, just soundly.
So Clark Lee, who's losing his team to the transfer portal,
looks around and says, I got to get I got
to have New Mexico State come here and basically brought
them all. Jerry Kill, the quarterback, the offensive coordinator, the

(37:45):
wide receiver coach, the quarterback coach, all come to Vanderbilt.
He gives the offense to them, and they have been brilliant.
They're averaging forty nine points a game. This game in
Tuscaloosa is one of the big games of the weekend.
I can't wait till watch it.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
Usc Lincoln Riley complained about the start time for this.
You sign up for the big ten year probably going
to play some of these games, right, and they played
pretty well. But I don't think you can go into
a game and already have an excuse why you might
not play well.

Speaker 13 (38:19):
It doesn't do well to talk about it publicly. I
think that there should be a little bit more protection
for West Coast teams that are traveling, and maybe you
say it can only happen once a year. But the
bottom line is you're right, it only looks like you're
whining and that's not a good look for Lincoln, whose

(38:40):
team was off to a good start and just a
couple of ill advised turnovers in this game were the difference.
But it was a great job. A great job, but
Bielama to get his team off the mat after being
bludgeoned by Indiana the week previous.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
Good to talk to you. Thanks you always a treat,
my friend. You have a great week. Six. Rick new
