Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Our one on this Thursday. Come on in, stay awhile,
gangs all here ready to go. We got some basketball
to recap football to look ahead to football tonight vikings
at the Chargers. But we begin with breaking news. Shamshrania
of The Mothership reporting that the Blazers head coach Chauncey
Billups has been arrested for alleged illegal gambling. Terry Rozier,

(00:29):
ten months after it was first reported that he was
under federal investigation, has been arrested as part of his
sports betting probe. He now plays for the Miami Heat
and the FBI Cash Bettel is going to hold a
press conference in a little less than an hour from now.
Pablo Torre is also reporting there is a lot more

(00:50):
to come. It's unclear as far as the gambling probe.
That Chauncey Billups is the head coach of the Blazers,
but the report says that this does not have anything
to do with him betting as a coach. But it
was previously reported the investigation into Terry Rogier's behavior centered
on unusual betting activity in twenty twenty three, when he

(01:14):
played for the Hornets. So in addition to what's going
on now to under investigation and Chauncey Billups, we don't
know if it was bets that were placed prior to
him being a head coach. Are there bets that have
to do with the NBA Terry Rozier as well. So

(01:34):
information's coming in as we speak, so we'll give you
an idea of anything leading up to the FBI holding
a press conference in an hour from now in New
York City to talk about Chauncey Billups of the Blazers
the head coach, and Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat.
Both have been arrested, as I mentioned, with the gambling
probe the FBI, and that's on the heels of the

(01:57):
NCAA approving betting changes for athletes. You're allowed to bet
on professional sports as an athlete. We'll talk about that
as well. Eight seven seven three DP Show email address
dpat Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle a DP show. Say
good morning those watching on Peacock download the app if
you haven't done so, and we say good morning to

(02:19):
our radio affiliates around the country. The Vikings, by the way,
getting three and a half at the Chargers over under
for entertainment purposes only forty four and a half. I
might have to move up my timeline. I told PAULI yesterday,
I want to see what Wembenyama does last night against
the Dallas Mavericks with a good front line and Cooper

(02:40):
Flag making his debut, and I have him as the
MVP next year. I got Luca this year. All of
a sudden, I'm watching and I go I think I
got to move it up maybe a year, because that
was an impressive performance last night by Victor Wembenyama. And
Jay Billis was the analyst on the call, and Jay's
excite is what kind of stood out that he was

(03:03):
truly amazed what he was seeing with Victor Wembanyama. That
he likened it to when you play NERF basketball in
your bedroom and you're dominating and you know you're dunking
on everybody. That's what it looked like. He does a
lot of different things, and he has added fifteen pounds.
He's got a good touch, good handle, he can guard

(03:25):
the perimeter from the paint, he can shoot the three.
And my big question his first year and I thought
the Spurs didn't do this well by getting him a
good point guard to put him in the right positions.
Stefan Castle was the Rookie of the Year and that's
the key with wembin Yama. With that kind of frame,

(03:48):
you got to find out you got to get him
to places where he can succeed. He doesn't have a
go to move yet, and that's what I'm waiting to see.
When you have that, I got to get a bucket.
I'm going to go to this he's on the court,
or I'm going to make this move. That's what I'm
looking for as he adds to his game. But it
was impressive, it was fun to see, and he's truly

(04:10):
truly remarkable. There's a lot of players who I've seen
over you know, fifty years, watching the NBA longer than that.
But when you watch somebody doing something that doesn't seem
like it's possible for somebody that big to be that skilled,
there's a they should call him cgi because it just
doesn't seem real sometimes when you're watching, but he is.

(04:34):
Maybe he's seven four seven five seven six, and it
almost looks like when he stands next to a seven footer,
the seven footer looks like he's six', five but that
was fun to. SEE i don't know how good The
spurs are going to, be but you know they he
had had the blood clots last year cut short as
season or he would have been a Defensive player of the.

(04:56):
Year trying to surround him with a pretty good ross
AND i think they can make a big jump because
they weren't that good last. Year they got the second
pick in the. Draft Dylan harper's coming off the, bench
but you, know there might it might be the embryonic
stages of what we saw With duncan And jenobili And,
parker but they also Had David. Robinson you had a

(05:18):
couple other. PERFORMANCES. Vj edgecombe had thirty four for the
seventy six. Ers now you, KNOW i love me Some
TYRESE maxi he went for. Forty edgecombe went for thirty,
Four so that's seventy four points with your. Backcourt they
end up picking up the win against The Boston, celtics
And i'm Watching joe L embiid and it's tough to

(05:41):
watch what used to be AND i don't know if
it can ever be, again because he looked like he
was really struggling AND i know it's opening night and
maybe he can play himself back into, shape but he's
been through a, lot go back to when he was
coming into THE nba with the. Back he's gone through a,
lot and he's A hall Of fame, player BUT i

(06:04):
don't think we're going to see anything close to what
we saw early in his. Career So Anthony edwards put
up forty one for The, timberwolves and so that's some
of THE nba from last. Night so four players had
forty or more in their team season. Opener that's the
most AN nba. History the previous high was three set

(06:25):
in twenty. Twenty that's When luca went for forty, Three
Anthony edwards forty, One maxi went for forty In victor
Wm banyama went for. Forty so four, players but it
was impressive last, night multiple players scoring forty or more
in What shaq called tron the real opening night of THE.

(06:46):
Nba AND i hope you got to See charles And,
Shaq ernie And. Kenny it's just kind of weird to
see THE espn logo there because it's you just swap
OUT tnt and you PUT espn in. There and it
was fun it was. Fun they basically, said we're buying that,
show putting it, here and then we're just going to
change the. Graphics don't change the. Show don't add anybody to.

(07:10):
THIS i don't need to see Stephen. A i don't
need to See, GREENIE i don't need to See pat.
McAfee let this stand. Alone don't do anything to. It you,
know all you got to do is add water and.
Stir that's. It enjoy the. Victory you have the best
show when it comes to pre and post and halftime
of any of the shows in any. Sport just let

(07:32):
him have. Fun And, charles they played a clip from the.
Show they'd reached out TO pauli a month ago and, say,
hey we're going to make fun Of charles in his
schedule AT, espn and they used it last. Night i'm
at a restaurant and all of a, SUDDEN i got
somebody in my family saying you're ON. Tv AND i
didn't know what she. MEANT i was, like wait, Where

(07:53):
and then she goes AND i looked up on the.
MONITOR i, go, well THAT'S, Espn and then all of
a SUDDEN i Saw charles and then they joked about
What charles was saying about what his schedule was not
going to be AT. Espn he wasn't going to be
doing O cho And deportes And Paul feinbaum and get
up and get down and get around and pardon the
interruption and all of these. Things so it was, nice

(08:15):
it was fun to, Say but great night in. Basketball
but once, again the leading story here Is Terry rosier
And Chauncey billips arrested for sports. Gambling you, know when
you're under investigation is one. Thing when all of a
sudden it's the FBI's holding a press conference and you're,

(08:35):
arrested that's when it gets. Different Because Terry rogier ten
months ago was under investigation and here we are the opening. Night.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
YEAH i think it's interesting that this is the second
group OF nba players that THE fbi has arrested for
poker games in the last four.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
Months, yeah, allegedly Well Gilbert. Arenas Gilbert arenas was just In,
july THE, Fbi, yeah hosting hosting poker games at his,
house right at his.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
House it feels like just early, reports this might be something,
similar might. Be it's interesting though that two and four
months that's, unusual.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
And on the heels of THE ncaa, saying, hey to your,
athletes you guys can now bet on professional.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Sports, yeah And ohio was just, like you know what
high school athletes you can?

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Too go? Ahead, YEAH i, KNOW i, knew and il,
Anyway it's just, dangerous it's. All it's just dangerous because
you give somebody a little bit of. Money AND i
can only speak from. EXPERIENCE i didn't have the money
AND i was, gambling AND i could have got myself
in a really bad. Situation AND i cautioned people all the,

(09:47):
time if you think it's just a little, bit then
it goes to a little bit, more and then a
little bit. More you don't bet, less you bet, more
and then you try to make up For, HEY i just.
LOOKED i brings back such bad. Memories be Like i'm
going to Take Ohio state And indiana is getting twenty,
four and THEN i end up losing that. Bet so

(10:09):
Then i'm going to go to THE nfl and Then
i'm going to double, up and THEN i would lose,
that and THEN i GO i Got monday, night AND
i got a home dog On monday, night all, Right
i'll load up on, that and THEN i would get
my money, back but STILL i would owe the Big
and in some states they're now adding it used to
be ten, percent now in some states twelve. Percent so

(10:30):
when you, LOSE i mean you got to factor that. In,
HEY i might lose five hundred. Dollars, no you're going
to lose a little bit more than that as. Well
BUT i just caution and especially, parents, grandparents if kids
have access to credit, cards and don't think that they're
just betting a little. Bit i've never met somebody who

(10:52):
bets just a little bit because it's a little bit
here and a little bit here and a little bit.
Here but that's. Enough with my, LECTURE i almost learned
the whole hard. WAY i haven't placed a bet IN
i think over thirty, years And i'm. Not you, know
when you do the gambling, podcast it reminds me of
WHY i don't. Gamble vegas builds those beautiful hotels because

(11:15):
we don't. Win, Yeah, paulie and.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
We've talked in the past about the targets of. Gambling
would be like a college student who's not making any,
money or a professional athlete who's not making much money
is trying to boost his. Income Terry roziers made a
hundred and thirty eight million on the court, Already like
he's not in a jam for. Money Chauncey billups made
one hundred and seven as a, player is making two
plus as a, coach and these guys are still risking

(11:39):
it for the rush of. GAMBLING i, guess but this is.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Poker If Chauncey billups is involved in, poker, allegedly that's
different than betting on sports because you can control when
you're doing. Poker it's in your hands. Now, granted there's
still chance there if you're playing against other. People blackjack
gets you against the house and the house always. Wins

(12:02):
but you do it for the. ENTERTAINMENT i understand that
there's a rush of the entertainment because every TIME i
bring this up to my, friend who's a, gambler he, goes,
well you go To, broadway same. Thing you know, this
we're just putting on a show by doing. BLACKJACK i, said,
WELL i don't go to THE atm and spend more
money during The broadway, Show, like, Yes i'm buying, tickets

(12:24):
BUT i don't end up in debt BECAUSE i went
to THE atm halfway through the show to pay for
the second. Half, yeah to, admit that's kind of a weird.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
ONE i, Know i'm not really following that, Either like it's, like,
oh it's shit you walk your, Dog, like, yeah, no
what does that have to do with playing?

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Basketball, well maybe it says about something about the PEOPLE
i hang out. With that's. Weird you.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Know the weird thing about this is that when when it,
HAPPENS i find myself thinking AND i don't Maybe i'm
alone in this or naive or. Something but whenever these
stories bubble, UP i found myself, THINKING i don't even.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Really know why this is.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
ILLEGAL i, MEAN i know it's only because attack money and,
winning but you, know like you have to report your
winnings and. Stuff But i'm not really sure why it's
illegal for people to do this as far as poker.
Goes as far as poker, goes, yeah fixing games and
stuff is totally. Different but like if there's like a
dozen super rich guys that like to get together and
play poker and they get and it's higher than like

(13:20):
something THAT i could, AFFORD i don't really know why that's.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
ILLEGAL i guess comes back to are you? Reporting what
are you? Reporting? Yeah, yeah, right it's taxes that's all it.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Is but still it's kind of, LIKE i don't, Know.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Well wasn't That Molly's? Game that movie where she was
running a house and it's a good. Movie, yeah who
was the Red?

Speaker 5 (13:42):
Hair Red?

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Hair, Yeah, Chastain, Yeah jessic Could? Chastain good? Poll, yeah,
yeah that DESERVES.

Speaker 4 (13:49):
I did quickly look it. Up there are some states
in some counties that have rules about illegal home betting
systems where it's a game because there's a housemaking. Money
and clearly the opus the onus on it is that
state's not getting their. Tax you're running a game and
the state's not getting their tax off the Housemaking.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
There is so much money made on illegal gambling because
nobody wants to report what they. Make and that's why
you're always going to have, bookmakers illegal, bookmakers because you
can bet Through FanDuel Or DraftKings or you know a
lot of different. Sites BUT i have to report. That

(14:28):
people don't want to report. It they're going to gamble
and they like sort of that anonymity with. It they
don't have to make it, public but front and center
and in forty five, minutes THE fbi is going to
tell us what they found out With, Terry, well we
hope With Terry rogier And Chauncey. Billups imagine you finally
get a head coaching position and that's now in serious. Jeopardy, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
Pauline, oddly we were talking About Chauncey billups less than
a day, ago talk about The All boring.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Team, yeah his name was.

Speaker 4 (14:58):
SUGGESTED i was, curious So Adam silver this. Morning maybe
he's given a heads up days in. Advance maybe he
knows it's, Coming maybe he. Doesn't can you imagine the
commission of THE nba getting that phone.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Call i'm going to guess he got a heads up
because THE nba has got to get a statement, together you,
know we're in cooperation with THE fbi or you, know
those kind of. Things but, YEAH i would think the
courtesy of the. Commissioner there's nothing the commissioner can do
that can kind of circumvent, This like if we tell
him he's Gonna Adam silver doesn't strike me as doing

(15:30):
something like. That all, right just getting started here in
a weird. Way but we'll get phone calls coming. Up
we'll have a poll question as. Well And Jason, garrett
Former cowboys Coach Will joan is coming up next hour
and any news we get maybe appropriate guests to have.
On we'll try to do that leading up to this
press conference and after the press. Conference we're back after

Steelers that'll be On sunday. Night we'll talk to coach about.
That how do you assess The chargers from what we
saw early to where we are? Now, jason you.

Speaker 7 (16:55):
Know it's disappointing BUT i think a lot of it
has to do with. Injuries AND i don't want to
make it a out, that but you, know they built
their team to be really strong and stout on the
offense and defensive, lines and you, know you think about
both their tackles being. OUT i just think it takes
away so much of their identity and how they want to.
Play you, know it's a long. Year there's going to

(17:16):
be some ups and, downs AND i think for them
the biggest thing is to kind of fight through this
and come out the other side of, it BECAUSE i
think there's plenty.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
THERE i think they still have a really good. DEFENSE
i love the.

Speaker 7 (17:26):
QUARTERBACK i love how the quarterback has to, me has
stepped up more in some bigger moments and kind of
put the team on his.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
Back you, KNOW i said.

Speaker 7 (17:35):
This we had a conversation about this as The hall
Of fame, game and you, know there was debate about
how Good Justin herbert, is and you, know my comment,
is at some point you have to reach into the
chest of the guys on your team and grab their
hearts and bring them with. You and and to, me
he has. Everything he's incredibly talented. Guy obviously, athletically his

(17:59):
ARM i think he's a rare guy, too his preparation
and all of, that AND i think he's taking that next.
Step so they just have to get through this time
with their guys being out and come out the other.

Speaker 5 (18:12):
END i think they're still going to be there in
the end of.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
It we've seen this. Now it's almost like if you
don't make it as a high first round pick at,
quarterback you're going to get kicked to the. Curb you're
going to bounce around as a. Backup then all of
a sudden you re. Emerge So Daniel jones And Sam
darnold both didn't make it In New york and here
they are thriving with different. Places And i'm curious about

(18:35):
that separation from first couple of years to then you
get into your later twenties that you somehow figure it.
Out you, Know Baker mayfield when he started to getting
kicked around to now and later in his twenties figuring it.
Out what is it about that position that some guys
may not get it early but they eventually get it.

(18:55):
Later you.

Speaker 5 (18:56):
KNOW i think there are two.

Speaker 7 (18:57):
Things let's start with the environment we're playing in at
the outset you, know typically these guys who get picked
high or going to bad, teams and, uh you, KNOW
i can remember for years we had, this there was
a debate about how do you make the environment more
quarterback friendly For. Romo, well we Drafted Tyron, Smith Travis
frederick And Zach.

Speaker 5 (19:15):
Martin you, KNOW i mean it was it was as
simple as.

Speaker 7 (19:19):
That And tony had his best year the year that
we Drafted Zach martin because we ran the heck out
of the ball we.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
Had you, Know DeMarco murray led the league in.

Speaker 7 (19:26):
Rushing tony was incredibly efficient and that's and that's how
the whole thing. Goes so you, know when you're in
those hard environments and you're learning how to, play it's
a bad. Combination SO i think it was as quickly
as you can get the environment right for those, guys
and typically it starts up front for. Me you, know

(19:47):
control the line of, scrimmage don't have them running for their,
lives and make good.

Speaker 5 (19:50):
Picks you got to pick the right guys when you do,
that and and and then you, know.

Speaker 7 (19:55):
Those guys learn as they. Go they're in a good.
Place they don't have to do. Everything you, know burden
is a big thing in. Football if you can spread
the burden around one part of your team or one,
guy and your team doesn't have to win for you every.
Week that's what the best teams. Have so typically of
those guys when they're, young they're carrying too much. Burden
the environment's not very, good and then people salur on,

(20:17):
them particularly in places Like New york where there's high.
Scrutiny SO i think the biggest thing for them was
to get a reset and then go to a better.
Place tampa is a better team Than cleveland, was Where carolina.
Was indianapolis is a better team than The giants were For,
Daniel so those guys get a chance to settle. In
they have their, scars they've, learned but they're also in

(20:39):
a better.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Place i'm also you, know, you being a former coach
and a, quarterback we talk about reps for. Backups you
know That Shudor sanders not getting first team reps And
Dylan gabriel is a hit away From shudor coming. In
did people ask you About Troy aikman's? Backup does he
get reps with the first team with The? Cowboys he.

Speaker 7 (21:03):
Doesn't he, Doesn't AND i live that you, KNOW i
was the third quarterback there for a, while BUT i
was also the backup there, Too and you just don't get.
Reps you, know the starters get the, reps you get
the scout team. Stuff you, know maybe you get a
little something. Different coaches will give you ten plays On,
friday or they'll give you two plays at the end
of a twenty play set or. Whatever but you, KNOW

(21:26):
i learned early. On you, KNOW i would complain to, myself,
like how AM i supposed to? Play, WELL i never
get any. Reps and then you realize, that you, know
if you can't function in this, environment they're going to
find someone who. Can so you better develop a relief
pitcher mentality and you better figure out how to do.
It and so the WAY i did it was you

(21:47):
spend so much time watching, film so much time knowing
the plan inside and. Out you, KNOW i would drive,
around When i'd be driving, HOME i turn the radio
off And i'd call plays out, loud, RIGHT i mean,
literally you do everything you can to create reps for
yourself to get yourself ready to.

Speaker 5 (22:04):
Go and you, know i'd throw after practice and you're.

Speaker 7 (22:06):
Always doing stuff because you're standing on the sideline AND
i would used to call the plays in and the
quarterback gets hurt and you put the headset down and it's, like,
okay you go from zero to one hundred miles an.
Hour but you, know the question is do those three or,
four five or ten reps during the? Week is that

(22:27):
what allows you to play? Well is it better to
have the guy who's playing all those snaps? Anyway take
those and then you just have to have a relief
pitcher's mentality to go in and.

Speaker 5 (22:37):
Function and you, know so it's a tricky.

Speaker 7 (22:40):
Thing but you, Know Troy, aikman who's a first Ballot
hall Of, famer he got all the, reps and SO
i think if You're Dylan, gabriel he probably deserves all
the reps, too because he's got a lot of catching
up to.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Do now give me. It for, instance you're driving, home
you turn off the radio and then what are you yelling?

Speaker 7 (22:56):
At, YEAH i mean, literally you're saying out, loud, okay
this is bunch, right motor scout.

Speaker 5 (23:01):
Right five to twenty five up post. RIGHT i mean
that's what you're.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
Saying and can you imagine being in the car next
to you and they're watching you by shouting out the
hand signals the whole.

Speaker 7 (23:13):
Thing, YEAH i can't tell you the number of times it,
happened like who what is this? Doing you, know but you, know,
yeah you have to steal reps anyway you. Can and
one thing a little bit of a different. Topic you,
know WHEN i became the head coach In, dallas there
was this virtual reality thing that that became available to
us and we had it for a. While and the

(23:34):
reason we had it was probably because of my experience
as a backup quarterback never getting. Reps and we created
a virtual reality room where backup quarterbacks could go in
there and go. Through, essentially they were they were hearing
the play from the coach going to the line of.
Scrimmage you could look, left you could look, right There's

(23:54):
Dev brian over, here Here's Jason. WHITTING i, mean it
was it was a real, thing and from, ME i
thought it was. Invaluable not for the. Starter the starter
is getting all those, rests but the guy who doesn't
get the. Work AND i know jayde And daniels has
done a lot of work with, this BUT i think
that's a real thing and that's something can really help
people going.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Forward wait a, minute SO i go into a. Room
DO i have to put on? Glasses you? Do And i'm,
now the defense isn't going to hit, me but how
are they? Moving SO i know Where i'm going, to
like my hot receiver going through. Progressions how much time
DO i have to do?

Speaker 7 (24:30):
This, well we had all these crazy cameras at, practice
and these three hundred and sixty degree cameras that they made,
up and you would have it like fifteen yards behind
the ball.

Speaker 5 (24:40):
And everybody you had to stay away from the.

Speaker 7 (24:42):
Camera but literally you would hear the offensive coordinator call to,
play go in the, huddle walk up to the, line
and you could do this and this with these with
these headsets, on and literally there's Des. Brian it's not
an image Of Dez. Brian that's it right. There and
you see the safety creeping down and you see the
strong dog pressure coming over.

Speaker 5 (25:02):
Here and to, ME i would go in. There, Afterwards i'm,
like this is.

Speaker 7 (25:05):
INCREDIBLE i, MEAN i love the idea of, it, because
LIKE i, SAID i was the guy that was on
the highway calling out the, plays, Right SO i think
it's the wave of the.

Speaker 5 (25:16):
Future.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
Myself Jason, GARRETT Nbc Football night In america's studio. Analysts sunday,
night it'll be The packers at The. Steelers which team
do you have a better handle on with these?

Speaker 5 (25:28):
Two, oh that's a great.

Speaker 7 (25:31):
Question that's why you get paid the, Money Dan, patrick
BECAUSE i think there's questions about the handle of each of.
Them you, KNOW i Think, PITTSBURGH i think you have
to feel good about what they've done With Aaron rodgers playing.
There he's played at a high level for. Them they've
done a good job. Offensively the defense where they made

(25:51):
a huge, investment that's a. CONCERN i, Mean Joe flacco
had been A Cincinnati bengal for about a. Week he
went down there and he looked like you, Know Kenny
anderson and and you Know boomersias and wrapped in.

Speaker 5 (26:04):
ONE i, mean he was. Fantastic so some question marks About.

Speaker 7 (26:10):
Pittsburgh their ability to defend the pass really comes. Up
SO i have concerns. There Green bay they've just been
a little up and. Down they've they've had some ugly.
WINS i really like their. TEAM i like their. DEFENSE
i Think hafley has done an excellent. Job you, Know
Michael parsons has been so, impactful you, know opening things
up for other, guys but then in the big moments

(26:31):
the other day he had three, Sacks SO i think
you're starting to see that thing mesh a little. BIT
i Love Jordan LOVE i think he's still getting to
a point where he needs to be a consistent player
week in and week out for, Them AND i think
a big part of that is, them you, know Making
Josh jacobs a part of. It so, again he doesn't
have too much. Burdens so they've both been kind of

(26:53):
fits and. Starts Green bay win a little bit, Ugly
pittsburgh some question marks on their. Defense in the, END
i Like Green bay's team.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
More The chiefs look like a completely different. Team now
you Give mahomes a couple of weapons in, There Rashi,
rice you get worthy. Back they look like the best
team in THE. Afc, well we.

Speaker 7 (27:18):
Talk about this every week On Football night In, america
and when The chiefs are struggling early, on you, know
everyone starts to get down on. Them that's the kind
of world we live. In and my response always, is
have you guys been watching for the last? Decade has
anyone been watching? THIS i, mean this team is, historic
the coach is, incredible the quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (27:38):
Incredible the.

Speaker 7 (27:39):
Defense you, know they have These hall Of fame, Players
so to, me it was just a matter, of you,
know they had some question marks on the offensive. Line
they're still working through. That it's better the last couple of,
weeks but you, know getting their guys, BACK i think
that's a big. Thing And Rashi rice a couple of years,
Ago i'll never forget. THIS i did the playoff game

(28:00):
Between miami And Kansas, city the freezing cold game up
there In Kansas, city and if you, Remember Kansas city
got shell. ACKed i think it Was Christmas day against The.
Raiders they were. Terrible, Yeah and it almost looked to
me the following week that they, said, okay here's who
we can. Trust can Trust, MAHOMES i can Trust, KELSEY
i can Trust, pacheco and we can trust for She.

Speaker 5 (28:22):
Rice those are the only guys getting. It and that's
what they.

Speaker 7 (28:25):
Did that's what they did in the, playoff and they
went all the way to the Super bowl kind of
taking that. Approach so it was like they sat down
together and, said this is the approach we need to.
Take this is how we're going to. Win AND i
feel like they've done that. Again and when they get
these pieces back When Rashi rice comes, back all of a,
Sudden Hollywood brown is a secondary, Player Travis kelcey is

(28:47):
a secondary. Player you, Know gray is a secondary or
a third player for. Them and so you get them
back into their, slots and now they're really hard to
stop Because Rashi rice can handle the bird and they
did a great job getting him acclimated last.

Speaker 2 (29:02):
Week Your cowboys or your former, team that offense looks really,
good And dak Looks i've always said When dak plays
and he's, healthy he plays. Well it's just keeping him.
Healthy but what do you make of did we underestimate
The cowboys this year after The Mic parsons.

Speaker 7 (29:21):
Situation, WELL i think if you look at the, team
they're set up to have success on. Offense and LIKE
i said about The, chiefs the WAY i feel About
dak just haven't been with him for a. While if
anybody's been watching football objectively without an agenda for the
last ten, years you, say this guy's a really good football.

(29:41):
Player he's played well from his rookie year, on and
injuries have been a factor for. Him playoff success has
been a factor to. Me he played really well in
the playoffs early. On they haven't played quite as well
in recent, years but you, know this guy's a fantastic.
Player so what they've done is three first round picks

(30:02):
on the offensive. Line they have a very good tight.
End you know you Pay Ceedee.

Speaker 5 (30:06):
Lamb he's one of the best playmakers in the.

Speaker 7 (30:08):
League you Have pickens who to, Me dak was going
to do a great job getting him. Acclimated javonte was
someone WHO i love coming. Out it was just a
question of is he back from the. Injury so there's
a lot of weapons on that side of. It so
it doesn't surprise me that they've played well as long
as for the most, part the quarterback stays. Healthy the

(30:28):
question was on, defense and even before The Micah parsons,
TRADE i felt like they were under resourced on. Defense you,
know who are the marquee guys and are they really marquee?
Guys AND i felt Like Micah parsons made a lot
of people on that defense way. Better he made the
other rushers, better he made the cover guys. Better so

(30:51):
you take him out of the mix to a defense
That i've felt needed help, anyway and it's you're probably
seeing what you thought you'd.

Speaker 5 (30:58):
See their struggle to stop.

Speaker 7 (31:00):
People it was better last week Against, washington But washington's
top three receivers were, Out so we'll find out more
as they, go but there's no doubt they're a juggernaut
on offense and the questions on defense are.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
Real great to talk, to you have fun On Sunday.
Night thank you, Again. Jason you're the Best Jason, GARRETT

Speaker 2 (31:33):
Live prior to Joining Front Office, Sports Ben horny spent
twelve years At law three sixty and he oversaw sports, betting, mergers,
acquisitions capital, markets private. Equity he's been covering this latest
story with THE, nba and really it's bigger than that
than just THE. Nba it's THE fbi with over thirty

(31:54):
people arrested involved in gambling schemes that had to do with,
poker also apparently sports betting as. Well ben kind enough
to join us give me the tone of that press.

Speaker 8 (32:03):
Conference, Ben, Yeah, dan thank you so much for having.
Me it was it was how DO i describe the.
Tone first of, all there was No, internet which was
not great FOR us. Reporters it was pretty, intense very.
Serious there were more than twenty, officials Including Cash, betel
director of THE. Fbi very. Serious they, said this is

(32:25):
the tip of the. Iceberg both of these investigations are still.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
Ongoing, okay let's start with The Chauncey billups allegations And
Terry rogier And Damon. Jones what were they alledged to
a bit involved.

Speaker 8 (32:39):
In so there was two. Things one was this. Alleged
by the, way they're all. Alleged still everyone's innocent until proven.
Guilty they made sure to make that. Clear there was
one operation Called Operation Royal flush that involved the poker
scheme and basically they would dupe everyday people into playing
these games with high profile people Like Chauncey phillups And Damon.

(33:01):
Jones but everyone else besides the victim knew was in
on the scam. Allegedly so they were using technology to
like read. Cards they said something ABOUT x ray technology
where cards would be faced down but they could still
see what cards they, were and they were duping people
out of. Thousands you, Know ultimately it was more than
it was millions of dollars, Cash pattel, Said so that

(33:24):
was that was that it was When Chauncey bilts was
a former. Player Damon jones former. Player they're both. Coaches
very not.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
Cool where what's the timeframe on? This Because Chauncey billups
coached last? Night but when is he alleged to have
been involved in this gambling?

Speaker 8 (33:42):
Ring so it's relatively, recently and by THAT i just
mean within a few years. Ago it was he was
a former, player now he's been retired for a. While
it WASN'T i would need to go read the, indictment
WHICH i have right, here hundreds of pages to find
out exactly the, year BUT i think that it was
allegend before he was a. Coach this has been going
on for, years they, Said.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
But why is it surfacing?

Speaker 8 (34:03):
Now so they've been investigating for a handful of, years collecting,
evidence trying to figure, out you, know how they could nail,
them and they obviously have enough evidence now that they
felt they could charge these. People they Arrested Chauncey billups
And Terry rozier this, morning along with. Others the other
interesting factor here is that they said that The italian mob.

(34:25):
IS i, mean this is like A hollywood. Movie they
made a mention of, that but it is real. Life
has THE nba, RESPONDED i have not been in touch
with THE. NBA i did ask at the press conference
whether THE nba cooperated with the, investigation and they, said,
yes THE nba. Cooperated what do you think is? Next,
well LIKE i, said it's the tip of the. Iceberg

(34:46):
so you, know Now, Chauncey billups And Terry rose, here
they're going to be arranged in court and sorry for
the winds by the way In oregon And florida, today
we don't know exactly. When and they're you, know they're.
Charged there's going to be trials moving. FORWARD i think
THE fbi and the law enforcement agencies they're still asking, people,

(35:06):
hey if you know anything about, this you, know we're open.
Ears they're still. Investigating so the implication is that further, players,
coaches et cetera could still come.

Speaker 2 (35:16):
Out but are we talking about fixing? Games betting on?

Speaker 8 (35:19):
Games but that was so that's the Other there were two, investigations,
right there was the poker. One the other, one which
is What rosier is involved? In players Like rosier and
you know he's the only, player And john Tay porter
is the other one that was part of. This they
were giving inside information about they were going to claim
that they were, injured they were going to say they're
going to play. Poorly they were telling other people involved

(35:41):
in the scam so that people on the outside would
bet on you, Know Terry rozier is going to score
less than ten points and Then rosier would exit the
game in the second quarter saying that he's getting a leg.
Cramp you, Know that's what it. Was AND i mean
this was being reported for a, while but now the
charges are really out. There that's what was. Happening.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Ben thank. YOU i know you've got a busy. Day
thank you taking some time for.

Speaker 1 (36:01):
Us thanks so. Much.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Dad That's Ben horny From Front Office sports covering, finance
private equity, ownership and. Gambling so you got the crime
families In New, york and you got poker GAMES x ray,
tables you got people wearing contact lenses or glasses that
can read a marked. Card then you have prop bets

(36:25):
maybe with, gambling and that's What Terry, Rosier john Te
porter was involved. In but Did Chauncey billups lure people
to poker? Games knowing that those people were going to be.
Cheated AND i think that's what it sounds. Like he's
been arrested. With and you're talking about hundreds of thousands

(36:46):
of dollars here that added up to NOW i think
around seven million. Dollars. Show that's. Wild it's. Wild, yeah, Pulling.

Speaker 4 (36:58):
And you asked, Again Chauncey bill is not a victim of.
This he's allegedly a.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
Participant, yes, yeah but imagine that your job is to,
lure not. That If Damon jones, said, hey do you
want to come to a poker, Game i'd, go, sure
That's Damon jones Or Terry. Rogier But chauncey billups, Okay
and then are you getting a? Kickback and if, so

(37:24):
what kind of kickback or You i'm sure that you're
getting a. Kickback let's say you, know the house is
making seventy five thousand dollars we're going to give, you
but you got to make it worth his. While that's
WHAT i don't, understand because he's not really playing poker,
Then BUT i don't you, know Maybe chauncey billups owed, Somebody,

(37:46):
hey you want to pay down your, debt and here's
how you do it? Now once, again just, speculating but
just trying to figure. Out Chauncey billups has done well
in his career in HIS nba, Career now was this
in between when he retired to becoming coach of The.
Blazers sounds like, it but, wow how much could you

(38:09):
make where you? Go this is worth? It? Now once,
again you never do these, things and you, go what
IF i get? Caught they're probably thinking nobody's gonna know about,
This it's just. Us but all of a sudden you
bring in the, mafia the crime. Family, man my intena
would go. Up i'd be, like uh, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (38:32):
Paul the one thing journalistically Is Lebron james is gonna
be asked about this with his, friendship long term friendship
With Damon, jones the player they played on different teams.
Together The athletic and The. Times The New York times
are already running different article about Things Damon jones is accused.
Of so it's one of those things whether you obviously
not accuse, anybody but you have to answer For it's

(38:53):
gonna be tough.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
Week, YEAH i mean you can just say you clearly no.

Speaker 4 (38:57):
Idea, Yeah i'm just saying.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
That and he's not. Around he can't talk To lebron
he's not. AROUND i don't Think, yeah all right then.

Speaker 1 (39:07):
The blazers players, too a bunch of young.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
Guys, hey let's ask you about what's going on with
your head. Coach, yeah, well tip of the iceberg
