Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hope you had a great weekend. Everybody's here ready to go,
fully assembled, Todd's ear Seaton, Marv Paul yours truly, and
of course the backroom guys back from Vegas. They got
to stay an extra day, the backroom guys as they
went to see pit Bull, and by all accounts, Pitbull
put on an unbelievable show. Some of these celebrities sightings
(00:27):
at the Formula one race in Las Vegas, Ben Affleck,
jay Z, Beyonce. Quite an outfit on Beyonce. She can
drive my car anytime? What Naomi Campbell was there? Michael Douglas,
Jeremy Renner, Gordon Ramsay, Travis Scott, Magic Johnson, Mark Wahlberg,
(00:48):
Sierra and Ali Larder, just to name a few of
these celebrities there. Panthers and the Niners coming up tonight.
And oh, by the way, moment the Raiders have fired
the offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly. You may not have known
that he was with the Raiders. He was with Ohio
State when they won a national championship and probably tripled
(01:08):
his pay going to the Raiders as the offensive coordinator
and he has been fired Chiefs over the Colts. We wondered.
We wondered about the Colts in a big moment. You're
up twenty to nine, this is yours, this is your
You're going to do the rest of the NFL favor.
You're going to beat the Chiefs at the Chiefs and
(01:28):
all of a sudden you lose that game. It's a
double whammy, I think for the Colts because you just
don't want to keep the Chiefs alive.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
You don't.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Nobody wants them alive in the AFC, and you kept
them alive. When Mahomes had the ball, I said, they're
going to win this game, and that's exactly what he does.
Daniel Jones, you kept waiting, and then all of a sudden,
it felt like that offense went stale, went conservative, and
the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
You know, the Chiefs are.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Played playoff football right now. They have to because they're
not a great team. They're not a very good team,
but they're an opportunistic team. As long as you have
Patrick Mahomes, you have a chance. The receivers are pretty good,
defense is pretty good, and you got Andy Reid as well.
But the Chiefs could have done the AFC of favor
there Cowboys over the Eagles. That's one of those where
(02:21):
you go, wow, that was quick, twenty one nothing, But
give credit Dak Prescott. This is what we asked for
with the Cowboys. That offense has been elite. All you're
looking for is an average defense and you're down twenty
one to nothing. They looked average, below average, and then
all of a sudden they made some big stops, they
(02:42):
got some turnovers there, and the Eagles once again, we
have questions about them, got big questions about that team.
Here is Brian Schottenheimer talking about Dak Prescott.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
He's one of a time man, he really is.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Just his leadership is poised, the way he plays the game,
the way he always believes. You know, you talk about
when some of your best players are the guys that
believe the most and they know that they're going to
find a way and help raise the other guys that
raise the standard. And we've got a lot of guys
like that now. But I know he won't say it,
but that's a pretty cool record that he broke in
(03:19):
to do it on a game like this where we
beat a really good football team the way we did,
I'm sure makes it even sweeter.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Yeah, he passes Tony Romo on the all time list
yardage list there with the Dallas Cowboys. But you're watching
this and I kept thinking, Okay, Saquon Barkley didn't even
get to thirty yards, had a fumble. I don't know
how much blame you're putting on the quarterback or you're
putting on the offensive coordinator, but feels like there's enough
(03:46):
blame to go around. You know, all of a sudden,
aj Brown scores a touchdown and go all right, everybody's
going to be happy today. And then all of a sudden,
Dallas played play off football because once again they're in
playoff form, or at least mode, you have to win. Now,
they have a couple other tough games coming up. You
got the Chiefs coming up on Thanksgiving, you got the
(04:07):
Lions after that. Let's just say they win those games. Now,
all of a sudden, you got a real conversation here,
and that Chiefs game against the Cowboys will be probably
one of the top five most watched regular season games
in NFL history because it's Thanksgiving, it's the Cowboys, it's
the Chiefs. I had a couple other games that stood out.
(04:29):
The Rams look tremendous. The Buccaneers are banged up, and
Baker Mayfield may have gotten banged up in the process.
But Matthew Stafford right now, he is a clear favorite
for MVP. Bears beat the Steelers. Steelers without Aaron Rodgers
there but Patriots, Lions and overtime the Packers, Seahawks, Ravens, Browns, Jags, Falcons.
(04:55):
As far as the Browns go, you got enough out
of Shootoor Sanders. I think you got almost one of
those morale boost like you got somebody who's going to
come in. He's excited, not afraid to throw the ball downfield.
He did okay, he did okay, and it's one of
those where he helped the team win. They didn't win
in spite of him. But that defense is great. That
(05:17):
ten sacks, And this is where we almost look at
the opposite of the Dallas Cowboys. If the offense is
average with an elite defense, they should be really good.
It's just they haven't had the offense. But you know,
he had three big plays and what stood out is
going to sound strange.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
He didn't run, he didn't.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Try to do those crazy Let me extend a play
like I'm you know, back at Colorado, I think he
had one rush for a minus one yards and he
didn't have an interception. But I mean, you're playing against
the Raiders who weren't very good, but you know, you
should win those games, and they did, and give credit
(06:01):
to him, had a couple of big plays and for
the most part, that defense was wonderful and because of
that you got that victory. Now, as far as who's
going to start, I mean that's going to be the
big question for Kevin Stefanski, because, yeah, Dylan Gabriel because
of the concussion, wasn't playing. You're not supposed to lose
your job because of an injury. But in this case,
(06:24):
I want to see a little bit more of Shadoor Sanders,
and I think he's earned it. I don't think Dylan
Gabriel's done anything where you go, yeah, you got to
go back to him, you don't. I would let Shadoor
Sanders play again, but I hope that we're just letting
him play. Let's not have any stupid hot takes today. Okay,
(06:44):
he's just a quarterback right now. He acted like a
fifth round quarterback and he got a chance to play
with the first team. They had a game plan that
they could give to him for him, and they ended
up winning that game. They got the Niners coming up next.
Maybe we'll see a little bit more and that might
(07:06):
be a little bit more good and a little bit
more bad.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
But that goes along.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
With being a rookie quarterback. I don't care if you're
the number one overall pick or you're a fifth round pick.
You're gonna have mistakes. I wanted to see the confidence,
and he had the confidence because he even said those
waiting for me to fail, I'm not going to fail.
But if I'm a teammate and if I'm Miles Garrett
and you go, you know we got something here, and
(07:32):
maybe they do. I mean, that defense is great. You're
gonna have the defensive player of the year. You're gonna
have the defensive rookie of the year. And they hit
the quarterback twenty times. They had ten sacks. It felt
like if you didn't get a sack, shame on you.
So that game stood out only because this is his moment,
(07:56):
his dad's there in the building. You're playing against the
team that I thought was going to draft him, and
then all of a sudden, you hear revisionist history, where
Antonio Pierce says, well, if I was there, we would
have drafted him. Coaches don't make the calls, especially relatively
new coaches don't make the calls on their quarterback. So
maybe he wanted Shore Sanders, but he wasn't going to
(08:19):
be making the call there. All right, we'll get to
your phone calls, best and worst of the weekend. What
we saw that we liked, we didn't like. We play
the waiting game for Lane Kiffen. We'll talk to Rick
new Heizol about that situation where depending on the day
and the time, Lane Kiffin is staying he's gone to
Old Men, or he's gone to LSU and he's going
to Florida. I still go back to the documentary I
(08:43):
saw on the mother Ship, and it felt like Lane
Kiffin finally found out who Lane Kiffen was, and that
is he was happy, had his family there, His ex
wife was, you know, in Oxford, Mississippi, his kids were there,
and it just felt like he found happiness, peace of mind.
(09:03):
But I don't even know, if you know, there's certain
head coaches that just don't understand that definition. Sometimes happiness
and peace of mind is not being happy and not
having peace of mind. It's going to the next job,
in the next job, in the next job. So yes,
you go from this amount of money to that amount
of money. You have ole miss in a historical season,
(09:26):
and he's the distraction and we got to wait until
after Friday's game to find out what he's going to do.
How can you make an offer to a coach who's
under contract at another university.
Speaker 5 (09:40):
It's like what college football is. I don't think it's
a formal offer. It's probably like a verbal to the agent.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
I would guess, Okay, but how are you making an
offer to the agent? Like, isn't that tampering?
Speaker 3 (09:53):
I don't think that rule is in place in college football.
I don't think they have tampering.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Well, once again, somebody should just say no, you can't
talk to my guy. After the season, you can talk
to my guy.
Speaker 6 (10:04):
Yes, it does seem like it shouldn't be difficult to
have a certain window insteat of guidelines where you then
you can talk to the coach and you can't talk
to the coach.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Well, I don't think during a playoff run or you're
getting ready to go into the playoffs should be the
time when you can talk to a coach. But look,
this has been going on with college football for decades
and we'll continue to go on. But Lane Kiffin says
he'll make up his mind after they play who is
at Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
In the Egg Bowl? The Egg Bowl? Yeah, balling.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
The real issue is Jimmy Sexton, the agent. He represents
a lot of different college football coaches and players and
pro coaches. He's stirring this drink for a two week
period so all his clients get placed in bigger roles.
He's basically ignoring all conventional rules of time and hiring
because it works out for all his clients.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yeah, he's the kingmaker here, and there's gonna be a
lot of guys feels they're waiting for all of this.
It's just a game of dominoes, where that one goes,
then this one goes, then that one goes, and then
all of a sudden, you're hopscotching all over the country.
And we always go back to the Oh, those kids
don't have loyalty, you know what they learn from the
(11:17):
grown ups because the grownups not have loyalty either. Seeing
what's the poll question here? In the first hour of
the program, got.
Speaker 6 (11:24):
One here from Marvin Most surprising division leader. Colts, Broncos, Bears, Patriots, Bears.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Yeah, Bears. I think they're a good team. I do.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
I think you're starting to see maybe a comfort level
with coach and quarterback. I think that relationship is going
to work out. I know there's been some people in
my business who didn't think this was going to work out,
which was interesting because you only gave them a couple
of games before you make that declaration. This is going
to take a little bit of time for Caleb and
(12:02):
given what happened to him prior to Ben Johnson coming in,
I think he's he just has to get rid of
what he did at USC and understand what you have
to do in the NFL. And the more he's able
to do that, the more successful he's going to be.
And he's got talent there, got a good tight end,
a couple of good receivers there, and you got Ben
Johnson helping you along the way. He kind of gives
(12:23):
you the answers to the test. But I would say
the Bears. You know, the Jaguars are probably the least
imposing seven win team right now, because I mean they
won again and then I'm watching the game, and I'm like,
I still don't know what you know Jacksonville has with
Trevor Lawrence. I'll go all right, and then I'll go, oh,
(12:47):
there's you know, it felt like there were three or
four of those moments where you went man and then
you went man, yeah, eton.
Speaker 6 (12:55):
Yeah, I mean I would put the I would put
the Patriots up there too, four and thirteen last year,
ten and two this year, same division as the Bills,
who thought they would be down.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (13:06):
I don't know that anybody really expected the Dolphins to
be this terrible this year. But I think that's a
pretty surprising result.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Well, I think most people had the Lions going to
the super Bowl, or they had the Packers in the playoffs.
We thought the Vikings would be a little bit better.
Vikings have a problem. Vikings have a JJ McCarthy problem.
And this is a long term problem because you let
these other quarterbacks go. He's only in year two. Now,
(13:33):
only in year two.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
But then.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
At what point do you say, is he our future?
And I'm watching you got the best receiver in football.
I mean, you have two of the best receivers in football.
He just at times looks like he's vanilla like, there's
not much you know where he's putting pressure on the defense. Now,
he did have a couple of really good pat throws.
He had one throw to Jefferson that was pretty incredible.
(14:00):
So I don't know, you know, once again embryonic stages
of these quarterbacks, rookie quarterbacks or a guy who didn't
play much, hasn't played that much. But you know, you
start to look at the other quarterbacks and the development
of them, and the Vikings went all in on him,
you know, Cousins goes, Danny Dimes goes, Yeah, Sam Darnold goes,
(14:22):
you know, and then all of a sudden, you're like,
he's our guy. But I mean, you're locked in for
another year. But you wasted a first round, a high
first round pick on him. And it goes back to
what I said. When he's at at Michigan, I don't
think they ever ask him to win a game.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Maybe they didn't need to.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
He was good in the playoffs, but you know that
you're you're waiting for something there. And he's got talent,
got athleticism, you know, he's got all those things ingredients,
and he got a really good head coach. But it
feels like they got a problem.
Speaker 1 (14:59):

and his podcast is Out of Pocket with RG three.
He was on the call for BYU's win over Cincinnati
on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Good to see you again.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Let me start with the Brown situation and what would
your philosophy be coaching philosophy be moving forward with the
quarterbacking situation?
Speaker 8 (16:06):
Yeah, I mean Dan Shdeer saying it should be the
start moving forward and I say that fully knowing that
if you listen to Kevin Stefanski's postgame speech, he wanted
nothing with giving Shadder any type of credit for the
way that the team performed. And I know the skeptics
out there will say, well, he had one hundred and
(16:27):
forty six yards of you know, yards after the catch,
and he had a bad interception. But when you watch
the actual game and you watched how the team responded
to him, you haven't seen that from a quarterback at
the starting position for the Clinton.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Browns and quite some time.
Speaker 8 (16:43):
And it's just so it's a it's an interesting thing
because when you love the game of football, sometimes the
game will love you back.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
Not always, but sometimes it does.
Speaker 8 (16:52):
And when you look at Shader's situation, come into the season,
Joe Flacco is a starter. He's not there anymore. He's
in he's in Cincinnati. Canny Pickett is the guy they
wanted to.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Be the starter. He got hurt in training camp.
Speaker 8 (17:02):
Then Dylan Gabriel comes in, the guy that the head
coach clearly prefers and loves, and he gets hurt and
gets a concussion. So when you get your opportunity to
have your first full week of practice reps with the
number one offense and you go out there and you
perform the way that he did to me. That just
shows you when the team responds to you, they play
with more purpose, they play with more excitement. The defense
comes away with ten sacks. I think you have the
(17:23):
guy in the building right now that should be the
starter for the remainder of the season. And the big thing, Dan,
it wasn't just like, hey, take the simple stuff. It
was the extended plays, the big playmaking on the broken
plays that they've been missing this entire season that Shader
was able to pull off. And I think that's why
he should be the starter.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
What do you think of this idea?
Speaker 2 (17:46):
If I treat the NFL MVP like the Heisman and
I invite Matthew Stafford, Jamiir Gibbs, Drake May, Jackson Smith, Jigma,
and Miles Garrett. Okay, you think if those guys are
all there and we make the announcement of the MVP.
So I know, Jamiir Gibbs isn't gonna win, or Smith, no, Jigma,
(18:08):
Miles Garrett because he's a defensive player, but to have
representation would be great at multiple positions.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
What do you think.
Speaker 8 (18:16):
Yeah, I was gonna say, but why not. You know
we've gotten stuck on this. Hey, the quarterback has to
win the MVP or the quarterback has to win the
Heisman Trophy, and I don't think.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
I don't think that's the case at all.
Speaker 8 (18:29):
Right now, when you talk about the Heisman Trophy, the
top two guys on my list are Jacob Rodriguez, the
linebacker from Texas Tech, and Jeremiah Love, the running back
from Notre Dame. So I don't know why we have
to be stuck into that. I understand that quarterbacks are
the sexy pick, right They sell more jerseys, they more
people know who the quarterbacks are. But I tweeted out
(18:51):
yesterday that I think Jackson Smith and Jigma should be
on everybody's list.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
Now. I do believe that Matt Stafford should be at
the top.
Speaker 8 (19:00):
Everybody's list because I don't think anyone's playing quarterback better
than he is right now.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
And the Rams are absolutely rolling.
Speaker 8 (19:06):
But when you look at Miles Garrett, the only thing
that could maybe prevent him from winning MVP is the
Browns record eighteen sacks in eleven games is unheard of.
He is going to absolutely smash my colleague Michael Strahan's
record when it comes to sacks in a season. But
I think all these guys, when you have these super
impressive years, Saquon Barkley last year, I felt like should
(19:28):
have been probably should have won NFL MVP. So I
am not a guy and I've been I don't want
to say maligned for it, but I have been chastised
for it by some of my colleagues on my stops
about putting guys that are not quarterbacks in that MVP race.
But this year shows you exactly what you're talking about.
(19:48):
Dan running backs, wide receivers, defensive ends, Well, they should
all be in that conversation. And why not make it
more of an event to go out and be able
to announce the NFL MVP and truly tell those guys
stories in a unique way, just like we do with
the Heisman Trophy.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Should we be focus focusing more on the Cowboys come
back or the Eagles collapse?
Speaker 8 (20:10):
I think it should be focusing on the Cowboys comeback.
I will say this about the Eagles. If people were
upset that they were eight and two, oh, they're definitely
upset now that they're they're eight and three and they
gave up twenty four nunsid points to.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Their division rival.
Speaker 8 (20:24):
I do believe that Jalen Hurts and the criticism around
him has it's not just unfair, because then we know
this life is not fair, right, it's it is what
it is. But I just think it's not justified. There's
a lot of teams that wish they could be eight
and three right now, and Jalen Hurts shouldn't be getting
some of the criticism that he is.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
But to focus on the Cowboys.
Speaker 8 (20:45):
How amazing of a pickup has George Pickens been?
Speaker 3 (20:48):
I mean, when you look at receivers.
Speaker 8 (20:50):
And this is something my coaches are talking all the time,
don't just look at a guy's catches in his yards,
look at his targets and how many, what share or
percentage of his targets is the actually catching? Do you
have to throw it to him fifteen times for him
to catch ten of them? And Pickings last night nine targets,
nine catches, one hundred and forty six yards and talk
(21:11):
about efficiency for them to come back the way that
they did, I think he was a big part of that.
Dak is obviously playing at an extremely high level, funniest
thing I saw on the internet though, was the Eagles
posting a wall of all their defenders and saying, Who's
going to get past this?
Speaker 9 (21:28):
And after the Cowboys won, they posted a picture of
Dak Prescott as the Kool Aid Man and that made
me last harder than anything yesterday.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
So that was pretty epic.
Speaker 8 (21:40):
They definitely won the day on Twitter for the Cowboys
social media team.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Okay, but why do the Steelers move on from George Pickens?
And would you give him a long term deal if
you're Jerry Jones.
Speaker 8 (21:52):
I mean, Jerry Jones wouldn't give Michael Parts as a
long term deal. But I think when you have wide receivers,
you have to be willing to manage good with the bad.
And I think in Pittsburgh George Pickens had kind of
wore out as welcome. I think they felt like they
were on an Antonio Brown track with him there. And
(22:16):
you have to give Pickens credit because I know they're
gonna people are gonna, you know, kill the Steelers are
saying why would you get rid of this guy?
Speaker 3 (22:24):
You just got to understand all the stuff that was
going on there.
Speaker 8 (22:26):
And now Pickens has come to the Dallas Cowboy was
a team that most would say doesn't have a great
team culture, and he's been a great teammate.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
So I just took my.
Speaker 8 (22:37):
Cap to Pickens to say to see him mature so
much in just a year. I think Ceedee Lamb has
a lot to do with that as well. And you
know when you go to Dallas as a receiver, there's
one thing you will get, it's your numbers. And I
think I have had to manage receivers who all want
(22:58):
the ball and the alas lovel I had four guys
that could all have one hundred catches in a season.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
I didn't quite have that in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (23:05):
But you have to learn to manage those situations and
those relationships while trying to win and trying to help
those receivers get paid. And I think Pickens is very
very thankful for Dak Prescott because not only are they winning,
but he's also getting his numbers, which is going to
change his life.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Talking to RG three, his out of pocket podcast are
out of pocket with RG three, wherever you get your podcast,
give me the team or teams you're just not quite
sure of right now.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
Oh yeah, and they're not going to like this one.
Speaker 8 (23:39):
But it's still for me the Indianapolis Colts, and the
reason I say that is they had a very unique
opportunity this past weekend to beat Patrick Mahomes and the
Kansiity Chiefs in the way that no one thought they
could beat them. And for Daniel Jones, he's proved a
(24:01):
lot of people wrong, including myself, with the way that.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
He's played this year.
Speaker 8 (24:05):
But he started hot, and over the past couple of
weeks he started to cool off just a little bit
and maybe come back down.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
To earth, but he's played his tail off.
Speaker 8 (24:15):
I had him in the MVP race a couple of
weeks ago because listen, when you Dan, you know this,
when you're wrong about something, you gotta admit it. And
I did not think that he would play as well
as he had with the Colts. But the knock on
him was the same knock that was on Sam Donald,
you know, the same knock that's been on other guys
that have gone places and had extreme success in the
regular season, but then when they get in those big
(24:36):
time playoff matchups, they don't quite live up to the expectation.
And this, to me was a playoff game for the Colts,
and they had the Chiefs beat and they came back.
Patrick Mahomes through for three hundred and fifty two yards,
no touchdowns, but they were able to call themselves back
from an eleven point deficit and win the game. And
that to me was a sign of like, can Daniel Jones?
(24:59):
Can he closed the door on a big time quarterback,
the best that we have I think in the galaxy still.
I know Stafford is playing the best right now, but
Mahomes is on pace to be the greatest ever and
he couldn't do it on the Chiefs off day. That
to me was the thing. We're like, Man, I'm just
not sure about them as a whole competing in the
(25:21):
playoffs if they couldn't beat this version of the Kansaity Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Explain to me Matthew Stafford at this age doing what
he's doing.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
Yeah, I said it yesterday.
Speaker 8 (25:33):
I don't think I can remember a quarterback with his
level of arm talent that's played this well at the
age of thirty seven years old.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
But explain arm talent? What are we talking about When
people say arm talent?
Speaker 8 (25:45):
There's varying different variations of it, Like is it a
strong arm? Is it the arm angles? Is it the timing,
is it the flick of the wrist, is the way
it looks when you make those throws. I think he
has all of that, and he playing better than I
think he's ever played in his career. So when I
watched the game, you know, some guys they dropped back, Hey,
(26:07):
rhythm and feet, clean eyes, clean feet. He's getting there
in the second hitch when he's supposed to like Stafford,
It's like poetry in motion.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
You know. I'm like, damn, that was a good throw.
Speaker 8 (26:17):
Like he he made the two box he made the
two fade throws to DeVante Adams and the second one
where DeVante ran up the tunnel. It was an extended
handoff when he threw it, I said, oh, that was beautiful.
Devonte hadn't even caught the ball yet, but I just
knew watching the throw and the way that he he
(26:39):
put He puts a little style at the end of
some of his throws, and you know, coaches would talk
to me about that, like, you know as a quarterback
when ooh I got him, Yeah, I didn't pull the string.
I dropped it in the bucket. And when you watch
him make those kind of throws, you're almost certain he's
going to complete every single pass to me. His arm talent,
(27:01):
he's the king of the no look throw. I know
we all praise Patrick Mahomes for it, but Stafford's doing
it like eight times a game, and he's doing it
with his helmet stripe. So he'll throw over here, but
his helmet stripe is this way, and his eyes are
over here, and like most guys try that, they throw
interceptions because you can't peripherally see who's all back here.
(27:22):
So I've just been completely amazed, to be quite honest,
with what Stafford has done. It's hard for guys to
carry that arm talent into their late thirties early forties,
and we saw that with Peyton, we saw that with
Tom and now we're seeing Stafford defy all those odds
and he looks like he could play for another five, six,
seven years the way he's playing this year.
Speaker 3 (27:43):
Best team in the NFL is wow. Best team in
the NFL. LA Rams.
Speaker 8 (27:51):
I really believe they when you look at the way
they're structured. Two number one receivers and DeVante Adams and
Pukinacua quarterbacks playing at the MVP level. Two running backs
and Blake Korn and Kiren that are that give you
everything you absolutely need and their defense is just smothering.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
I mean, I felt bad for Baker with the shoulder.
Speaker 8 (28:12):
Don't know what the injury prognosis is going to be
for him, but it was almost as if he was
out there fending for himself. That this Rams team. I
know they don't have Aaron Donald and I know they
won a Super Bowl, but this might be the best
Rams team that Sean McVay has ever had.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Did you ever kid around with Andrew Luck beating me
Mount for the Heisman?
Speaker 3 (28:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (28:34):
We me and Andrew go way back. We were in
Texas competing. We never played against each other, but I've
known ed you for a really long time, and when
we got to the Heisman, it was you know, he
was the guy that everybody thought was gonna win for
the past three years when we got there, and he
definitely wanted to win that award.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
It just so happened that we had a better year.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Paulie, Do you have the voting, Yeah, he got them
by about two two hundred votes, is pretty close.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Bea don't joke around with Andrew with a few.
Speaker 8 (29:06):
I am not the guy that pokes and pride of
guys about the heismand trophy. I look at it more
as an honor as opposed to, hey, I want it,
you didn't. And I actually took everybody out. So they
give you an opportunity to take a limo by yourself,
go out in town, have fun with your people, or
you can get limos for everybody and everybody can go
(29:28):
out on the town. So I chose to bring everybody out.
Monti Ball, Tire, Matthew, Andrew Lock, Trent Richardson, and we
had a great time on the city there in New York.
But it's been cool to watch Andrew, you know, at
Stanford being the general manager and the reaction he had
on the sideline this this past weekend with the scoop
and score shows you how much he loves football. And
(29:51):
I'm happy for him because at the end of the day,
this guy retired early, right, he retired early when everyone
thought he was at the prime of his career because
he didn't love football anymore. So it's awesome to see
him back in love of football.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
Could you see him being the head coach at Stanford
next year? Yeah? I mean's are pretty much is that's.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
Pretty much just that's what I felt like he gets
so into it, he's so close that that's as close
as you can get to the action by being the
head coach. So he could take that Standford job, and Dan.
Speaker 8 (30:27):
Don't you think it's the smartest way to do it?
Like he's a general manager, they're interviewing him on the sideline.
How many other general managers are getting interviewed in the
middle of the game.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
I know.
Speaker 8 (30:37):
The team isn't that good this year, what they could
potentially be really good over the next couple of years,
and then he just waltzes right in there, puts the
head coach hat on, and now he doesn't have to
take those losses on his record. He can have he
can have a good team and go out there and
make it happen. I'm really happy for him.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
Good to talk to you. Thank you, Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Thanksgiving,
God bless.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
That's Robert Griffin Junior, the third.

Speaker 3 (31:14):
Are we good? We are ready?
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Okay, I'm not seeing Rick's face here? Is he not
able to come. So this is just a phone interview.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
Yeah, he's having trouble with his camera.
Speaker 6 (31:25):
He's got to do audio only.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Okay, that's fine, all right, all right, Rick, So I
can't see you, but I can hear you here. We
are on them on Elane Kiffin supposed to make his
decision by Friday, maybe Saturday. What do you think that
decision will be.
Speaker 10 (31:41):
I had originally thought Dan that he was going to
go to Florida. I think that was kind of always
in the back of his mind what he wanted to do.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
But the more I'm.
Speaker 10 (31:51):
Listening to those who act like they're in the know
in the coaching fraternity more, I think LSU is the favorite.
I think LSU is in a state of desperation given
all the annex that have taken place there, and I know,
given my conversations with Nick Saban, what sort of personnel
(32:14):
you can put together in the state of Louisiana as
the only you know, power for school from that state
and the amount of talent that exists in that state.
So I just think probably LSU right now is the
leaning is the favorite. But I won't be shocked if
it's Florida or LSU. I will be shocked if it's
ole Miss.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Yeah, I'm just trying to understand this.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
And I brought this up on the show that documentary
ESPN did on Lane and finding happiness and peace of
mind and his family and everything was great in Oxford
and then. But I don't know what it is about
the makeup of a lot of you coaches. It's all right,
I did, I accomplish what I wanted to hear. Now
I have to move like you have to keep moving.
(32:54):
What is that characteristic trait that it almost seems like
it's from burd with some of these coaches.
Speaker 10 (33:02):
Steve Mariucci came to the University of Washington for a
pro day. He was looking at Marcus tuiasa Sopo and
he sat there and he said, you know, we should
be in like politicians. We should have a four year term.
If we're successful, we should get re elected, and then
we should have term limits and go someplace else, because
at the end of eight years, all you've done is
(33:23):
built up expectations that if you make it, you're okay.
It's relief instead of jubilation, and you should be able
to go somewhere else and build it again and hopefully
get another fan base that's excited about you, rather than
now disappointed that you're anxious that you're humbering around the
Mason Dixon line. Dabo Sweeney would be an example of that, right. So,
(33:46):
I just think that Lane is at a situation now
where he's got this amazing power. And then I also
think we have to point at the agent here. Jimmy
Sexton is playing this thing like a master violinist.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
I mean he is.
Speaker 10 (34:03):
It's a concerto. I mean he's got He's got Kaitlin
de Boor's name in this thing. As interested in potentially
going to Penn State. That creates another suitor for Lane.
If Alabama became open and all of a sudden, now
all these different people are trying to hang on to
their guy, and Jimmy's clients are sitting there, they're all
going to get the benefit of a new market that
(34:25):
has made So it's a wonderful, wonderful time of year.
If you like this sort of thing and it's driving
everybody else crazy.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
It may sound crazy to say this, but did Penn
State make a mistake in firing James Franklin?
Speaker 10 (34:40):
I think so, I mean, what are they going to
get who are they going to get that's going to
make be better than James Franklin over the lifetime of
a career. Now it may turn out that way, but
my goodness gracious to please the fan base, which obviously
was pushing the button to get rid of him, how
are you going to What name are you going to
get that's out there that's going to do that? Now,
(35:02):
Kaelin de Bor might, but that also is going to
require a major, major check writing campaign. And whether or
not they're they're feeling there up to that, we'll wait
and see.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Yeah, the whole Kailin to boor at Alabama and I
started to hear stuff, you know, I mean, and it's
not negative stuff. It's just as he happy or is
his family happy there? Yeah, whether that's true or not,
but it's just kind of those are the things that linger.
And then I was told by somebody who talked about
chaos in the off season in college football, and I
(35:37):
don't know what exactly that means, but you're hinting at
chaos in the off season, and.
Speaker 10 (35:42):
Who benefits from that chaos other than this the agents,
I mean, they they're in the transaction business. They want
to sell houses, right, They want. They want more buying
and selling, more commissions, and it is as a wonderful
time of year for them.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
Rick new Heisl, CBS Sports college foot ball analyst, former
college football head coach. How does the committee kind of
find a solution for the Notre Dame Miami conundrum?
Speaker 3 (36:09):
Wow?
Speaker 10 (36:10):
Well, they keep them out of the same pool. That
was a revelation that Hunter Yurchik gave us last week.
They're not even being considered against each other. So when
the committee starts to put these things together, they put
three or four schools together in one deal, and now
they start analytic conversations and all the different machinations that
go into deciding which of those schools should be ranked
(36:31):
one and which should be ranked four. But if they're
not in the same pool, they don't ever get that
head to head conversation. So, by virtue of the seventy
to seven victory over Syracuse, you could actually move Notre
Dame up a spot this week, right, You could put
them ahead of Oklahoma. And if you do that, you
might keep Miami from ever getting into the same pool
(36:53):
in terms of conversation with Notre Dame, which would be
a absolute head scratcher for all of us who remember
or I thought it mattered what happened on the field,
But it seems as if they're hell bent to get
Notre Dame in and Notre Dame's playing well, which makes
it easier for him, and Miami may never actually get
considered along with Notre Dame, which would be absolutely ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
Ohio State hasn't really been challenged during the regular season,
and I don't know when you have a team that's
that good, but you get into the postseason, you know
you're going to have those close games, learning how to
win those close games. It feels like, you know, we
see this in March Madness. You can be the number
one team, but you're gonna have a close game, and that,
(37:38):
you know, can be the difference between you moving on
or you know, being knocked down. What do you expect
from Michigan against Ohio State?
Speaker 10 (37:48):
Oh if they're best shot, obviously, and then they're gonna hope,
like heck that Washington beats Oregon. Right, if that can happen,
then then we will have check that bar for Ohio State.
If they can win a close game against Michigan and
kind of shake this Michigan flu that they've had for
(38:08):
the last four years. This is a monster game for
Ohio State. They've rested their receivers. Carnel Tate and Jeremiah
Smith didn't play last week. A number of guys were
on the DL sort of speak and get ready for
this game. This is a monster game because Indiana's checked
that box. We recall the comeback at Penn State. Texas
(38:29):
am A and M has checked that box coming from
behind thirty to three against South Carolina.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
We haven't seen Ohio State do that.
Speaker 10 (38:36):
And I do believe Ohio State's vulnerable in some areas,
they just haven't been exposed. So yeah, this is one
of those deals where Brian Day certainly wants to shake this,
but he would like there to be some challenge to it.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
How patient will Colorado be with Dean Sanders?
Speaker 10 (38:56):
I think patient. I think they've got so much money
invested in him that as long as he can convince
him that he's all in and will work hard to
put together the right stuff on the field, that we're
not going to let him go. You know, obviously, when
you're not making bowl games, you're you're not worth eight figures,
which is what they're paying him. But the amount of
(39:18):
attention that he brought to the program. They've got to
at least play it out a few more years to
see if he can actually get this recruiting thing down.
And Dion's got to decide if he's healthy enough to
actually go on the road, because Dion in your home
would be a would be a big selling point. But
he doesn't lead campus. He does it all on the phone.
Whether or not that's good enough, we'll have to wait
and see.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
Thank you, Bud, Happy holidays, and we'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Can't wait, buddy, talk to you soon. Rick Neuheisel
