Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
It's our one on this Wednesday, Dan and the Dan
Ats Dan Patrick Show. We're fully assembled. Fritzy's here, Seaton, Marv,
Paul Years truly and of course the back room guys.
We'll talk some college football a little later on Paul
Finebaum on load for the Mothership. Also Dominicque Foxworth, one
of their great analysts, will stop by as well. And
(00:26):
the main story, and who would have thought this would
be a big story, a story at any point this year,
the cold signing Philip Rivers to the practice squad. Now
everybody seems to be focusing on and maybe I started
this of he's a semi finalist for the Hall of
Fame this year. Now I don't think he's a first
ballot Hall of Famer. In fact, I think he's a
(00:47):
borderline Hall of Famer. But I'm also wondering about this.
Once he gets on the roster, he doesn't have to
play in a game. Once he's officially on the roster
right now, practice squad. When he's on the roster, then
they start the clock again. He won't be eligible until
twenty thirty one, that is, unless he plays next year
as well. But I'm hoping they find somebody, maybe another grandfather,
(01:11):
that they can put in for Philip Rivers. But it's
a big story. I don't think he's going to be
playing against Seattle. Boy. If you're going to make your
debut after a five year drought of not playing and
you're going to come in and play in Seattle against
that Seattle defense, yikes. Isn't there another quarterback somewhere in
(01:31):
the world who might be a little better than Philip Rivers. Now,
I understand that he understands the offense. He's in contact
with Shane Stike and the head coach on a weekly basis.
I understand all of that. Are you trying to tell
me that there's not another quarterback who might be just
a better option and a little younger than Philip Rivers?
(01:54):
Just a thought. Welcome to the program, already in progress.

(02:36):
A couple of movements on betting lines that caught my attention.
The Chargers were favored or getting three and a half
against the Chiefs. At the Chiefs they were getting three
and a half. Now it's four and a half. The
Vikings were getting six against the Cowboys. Now they're getting
five and a half. Just little things like that. You know,
(02:56):
I'm always curious. We get to midweek and when the
sharps decide that they're going to bet. But the Chargers
now getting four and a half against the Chiefs. I
think the reality set in. The Chiefs and the Dolphins
have the same record. I think they're both six and seven,
and you go, wait, oh my gosh. Now the Dolphins
(03:18):
had played pretty well and tried to salvage a season
with maybe a winning record when it's all said and done.
But with the Chiefs and you go, Oh, that's when
it starts to sink in of just how bad this
has been. Now, and we love to do this. We
react quickly and we jump to conclusions. If you're Andy Reid,
(03:40):
do you want to stay around for this? Okay, they
went in as a super Bowl contender, maybe the best
odds to go to the super Bowl. Even as late
as a couple of weeks ago, they were still in
the mix to be the super Bowl favorite from the AFC.
And now it's all, does Andy Reid want to stay
around for this? When he retire, maybe, you know, get
(04:03):
a front office job with the Chiefs like that happened
quickly here, but the Chiefs are different. This will be
Kelsey's last year. They thought they shored up the offensive line.
Still got to be able to run the football as
great as Mahomes is, and you know, Worthy and Rice
got to be more consistent. So Chris Jones, I'm watching
(04:24):
yesterday or the day before an analyst where all of
a sudden say, you know, Chris Jones just isn't the way.
You know, he's not that player he once was. I'm like,
a couple of weeks ago, it was like, man, Chris
Jones is awesome. It happens quickly. Oh, Travis Kelsey's washed. Okay,
I was surprised he played one more year. But he's
still a first ballot Hall of Famer. But he does
(04:46):
look like he's on his last legs. He had one
catch in that last game. So now you start to
look at a bigger picture. With Andy Reid, we're looking
a bigger picture for Mike Tomlin. Like this happens quickly
in the NFL, and that's what's surprising. The Chiefs in
this game against the Chargers, and you know they have
(05:07):
to win. They have to win, and they have to
get a lot of help. But those are some of
the things that I think look at big picture. Just
because Mike Tomlin won the game this past weekend doesn't
mean that I don't think that he's going to take
another job or maybe go into TV this next year.
I wouldn't be surprised. In fact, it feels like I'd
be more surprised if he came back to Pittsburgh. But
(05:28):
also you have to factor in who is better than
Mike Tomlin. It's just like we found out with James
Franklin at Penn State. He might not be that upper
echelon guy, but he's pretty good. And you bring in
Matt Campbell who has been pretty good, but he doesn't
beat the big teams. His record against you know, top
(05:49):
ten teams is not good. And you might be replacing
James Franklin with Matt Campbell and they're basically the same
kind of coach. Be careful when you say we got
get rid to that guy. Who were we bringing in?
And the same thing with Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh, who
are you bringing in Who's going to be better than him? Now?
Do I think he's underachieved greatly in the last decade,
(06:12):
Yes I do. In that city with that talent, yes
I do. But the key has been and the key
is for every one of these coaches, who's your quarterback?
I mean, Aaron Rodgers, I don't think plays next year. Now,
you got to go in and get a quarterback. Mason Rudolph,
he'll be a bridge quarterback. Can you get somebody? Is
(06:33):
there somebody in there? Are you going to trade? And like,
you got to have a game plan here. If I'm
Mike Tomlin and I'm part of the draft process, I'm like,
I got to get a quarterback because if you don't.
Just like we saw in Denver when Sean Payton came
in that wasn't his quarterback, and what did he do.
He said, bow Knicks is my quarterback, and he wanted
(06:54):
bow Knicks. Look at Mike Rabel. If Rabel doesn't have
Drake may Rabel's not your coach of the year. But
he found Drake may Ben Johnson's not taking the Chicago
job if he has a bridge quarterback there he wants to.
He was going to wait and take the right job
because I was going to have the right quarterback. And
(07:16):
remember when Jaden Daniels was a top two, top three,
top four quarterback, or if you're going to start your franchise,
it was Jaden Daniels. That was three months ago, four
months ago. That changed. That's quick. Oh he's injury prone.
Well that was the big knock that he was injury
prone and his build. He was slight for a quarterback,
(07:40):
very talented, had maybe the best rookie season that an
NFL quarterback's ever had. But all of a sudden, it's like, oh,
that's right Jaden Daniels. Because it wasn't long ago. If
you were going to start your franchise with any quarterback. Now,
people would have taken Jaden Daniels and it would have
been a landslide. Now Drake may might even get a
(08:02):
bow Nicks in there, maybe Caleb Williams. But that's how
quickly it changes in the NFL. And that's what surprised
me with the Chiefs. All of a sudden you start
to hear Andy Reid want to be in a rebuild.
I didn't know they'd be in a rebuild, but it
certainly feels that way. Seeing what's pole question today?
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Which would be more important to you playing a couple
more games of the Hall of Fame?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Can I have both?
Speaker 3 (08:31):
You can? But for the sake of this poll question.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Oh okay, Well, this is the thing that I'm curious
about with Philip Rivers because if he makes the roster
and now we reset the clock and it's five more
years before he's eligible, I think we're going to be
looking at his numbers and all of a sudden, they
(08:57):
aren't going to be impressive. I think there's so many
great quarterbacks putting up so many great numbers that I
think he might get pushed down the totem pole a
little bit. That he has, you know, longevity, durability, put
up some big numbers, never won anything. But I think
he kind of gets he's going to get lumped in
(09:18):
with that sort of second grouping there, and he might
be up against Aaron Rodgers going into the Hall of
Fame in twenty thirty one if Rodgers doesn't play next year.
So I wonder about that with Philip, Now, if he
would come, if he comes back and plays, and let's
say they go to the playoffs. Let's say they win
(09:39):
a game in the playoffs. Now you've added to your
resume something that's special. Maybe it's just one game, big win,
but it becomes a great story. And I think that
was the curiosity I had that, Okay, Philip has been
coaching his son's high school team, and now you're going
to play. And I mean, it almost feels like a movie,
(10:03):
it does. It feels like a grown up, rudy version
of Oh my god, he's out there and he's forty
four years of age and you know he's a grandpa.
But you come back and there's a chance to add
to your resume. I don't think he can take away
from his resume if he comes back he doesn't play well.
I don't think anybody's expecting that. But if you reset
(10:24):
the clock now, all of a sudden, you bring in
a whole new wave of quarterbacks that you might be
competing for votes with. And he's a semi finalist this year,
but once he goes to the active roster, then he's
taken out a consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Yeah, Paulie, this is what every NFL player wants. They
want to come back for four weeks. Steve Young comes
on the show every month and says, if I could
play right now.
Speaker 5 (10:49):
I would.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
You asked JJ Watt if he could walk out of
the booths, play two games and they go right back
to the booth and push his clock back five years,
he probably would. And this is one of those anomaly
situations with Breeze that he knows it's a temp job
at the most.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Yeah, but JJ wants a first ballan Hall of Famer
Philip Rivers is not.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
I guess what Philip Rivers is? I think forty four.
You said, yeah, the Hall of Fame is the Hall
of Fame or not. And he has no control and
he gets to play one or two or three more
football games for a good team.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
This is the dream, Yes, tod.
Speaker 6 (11:23):
Not to be Debbie down, but I'll where that has
what if it's a total disaster. Though he goes out
there pick six, he's over and underthrowing receivers. The balls
got a little squiggled to it, and he looks like
he has no business being out there for whatever reason.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
I don't think anybody would be surprised at that. I
think we'll be surprised if he's good. I don't think
anybody's gone, uh yeah, it doesn't look good. No mobility,
no arm strength. The Hall of Fame for you now, no,
I you know, once again, I think he's a borderline
Hall of Famer, and I'm not involved in the process.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
Yes, Paul, here are some of the semifinalists he's up against,
specifically at the quarterback position this year. It's Tim, it's
Drew Brees, and it's Eli Manning in year two. And
everyone thinks Eli Manning year two is in. And I
can't imagine Drew Brees not getting in. Oh yeah, Drew
Brees should be first. Ballel holl Of, that would be
a shocker. Yeah yeah, yeah, Drew Brees. So that means
(12:14):
it's tough this year for him.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Yeah, I once again, I'm glad I don't vote on
this process, you know, because it's a thankless job. But
I don't view Philip Rivers as anywhere near a first
Bowel Hall of Famer. I mean, if he gets in grade,
I mean it's just like Eli. I don't view him
as a Hall of Famer. But he did the things
that got people's attention. He won two of the biggest
(12:37):
Super Bowls. He stopped an undefeated team, he beat the
Patriots twice, and he played really well in those games.
Those two seasons are going to get him into the
Hall of Fame with his name. He did have durability,
you know, rarely missed a game if he missed any
and you know he's got three hundred touchdowns and sixty
thousand yards. But you know, they it changes though the
(13:03):
numbers of how important you like Matt Ryan. You know,
you got the MVP that makes him probably a Hall
of Famer. He got to the Super Bowl that but
then they lost that Super Bowl in dramatic fashion. So
I don't you know, once again, you're trying to sort
this out that Philip Rivers. It's a great story, great story,
(13:23):
and I hope that he comes back and he's able
to play where he's proud of how he's playing. Yeah, pauling.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Phil Rivers right now is sixth all time and touchdown
passes four twenty one. He's ahead of Marino, Roethlisberger, Matt Stafford.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, et cetera, et cetera. Yeah, yeah, Okay. Once again,
it's the eye test because sometimes when you say, hey,
is such and such a Hall of Famer and you
go yes, or how quickly you say yes? Because sometimes
when we have people on, I'll go, hey, such and
such hall of Famer? Then no, or you know, like
(14:02):
Matthew Stafford, who did we have on? Was it South
pal Antonio And he's a voter And I said Matthew Stafford,
He's like, oh yeah, absolutely, Like okay, because then you know,
I've had somebody who was a voter before who said,
you know, Stafford winning the MVP that would solidify the
Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Yeah, yeah, you know, I kind of I don't know why,
but I feel that way about Philip Rivers too. I mean,
I know he didn't win what everybody expected him to win,
but he was clearly one of the best quarterbacks of
his era.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
But he was never the best quarterback of his era.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
Not the best, but one of the best for sure.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Yeah, he was probably in the top five to seven.
Is that fair?
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Stat wise? He was always there with touchdowns. He only
led the league in touchdowns once. He was a eight
time Pro bowler. Was never All Pro? Yeah, first team
All Pro. Yeah, so never the best quarterback.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
But no, he went against some pretty pretty impressive resumes there. Yeah, Pauling, this.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Comes down to not appearing in the super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Well, he didn't do well in the playoff. Yes, I
think he had a losing record in the postseason.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
Yes, his record in the postseason is five to seven
for his career in seven playoff appearances.
Speaker 1 (15:17):

Our good buddy Ross Tucker just sent out a tweet.
The two teams were the best records in the NFL,
the Patriots and Broncos both being underdogs at home to
teams with less than ten wins. This week, Patriots hosts
the Bills, Broncos hosting the Packers. He is the host
of The Dominic Foxworth Show ESPN writer, commentator former NFL
(16:22):
defensive back Dominic Foxworth joining us on the program. We
spent a little bit of time, maybe too much time,
talking about Philip Rivers, Philip Rivers Hall of Famer, a
semi finalist for the Hall of Fame this year, and
then we brought in Matt Ryan as well. So if
you had to choose between Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers
Hall of Famer, who would you pick?
Speaker 5 (16:45):
Yeah, it's so hard to get into the Pro Football
Hall of Ape.
Speaker 7 (16:48):
I think since it's only like thirteen guys like since
the nineties that have gotten in since like the early
nineties at quarterback.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
That is, Okay, whose career would you want?
Speaker 5 (16:59):
Yeah, that's.
Speaker 7 (17:01):
You put me on the spot. So Matt Ryan obviously
one MVP was all pro. Philip Rivers was probably better longer,
but never wasn't all pro, but that might be a
result of the people in his conference, and never won
an MVP.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
I gotta be.
Speaker 7 (17:16):
Honest, just off the top of my head, I think
Philip Rivers. I think of Philip Rivers as a better quarterback,
but I also know that the numbers don't really support that.
There's a huge difference between the two of them. And
also Matt Ryan's made it to a super Bowl and
lost one. But I think ultimately I think we respect
Philip Rivers' career more than we do Matt Ryan.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
So if you give me one, I think I'd rather
have Matt Ryan.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Okay, Matt, excuse me. I'd rather have Philip Rivers. Matthew
Stafford first balling Hall of Famer. Nah, I mean not
first ballot.
Speaker 7 (17:43):
I think he wins another one this year, then we're
talking first ballot. I think, obviously, this is a team sport,
and as much as it sucks, you want the Hall
of Fame to be an individual award. As great as
he's been, like, his team's success just came kind of late,
so I think one more, he's probably first ballot, but
with just one super Bow in like the end of
his career, really defining his career, I don't think he's
first ballot.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Yeah, but he might be MVP this year.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (18:06):
Of course it's hardar You asked me a guy whose
career is still going on, which I guess Philip rivers
career still going on too, Matt Ryan, if you stop,
If you stop Matt Ryan today, I'd say, not first ballot.
Speaker 5 (18:19):
I'm just gonna be Matt Stafford, not first ballot.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
He wins the MVP this year, wins another Super Bowl,
then of course first ballot.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
How does this work out for Philip Rivers and the
colt poorly?
Speaker 5 (18:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (18:30):
Like, as much as he's older than me, and as
much as I would want older guys, I played against
Philip Rivers a bunch in college back when Maryland was
in acc and a bunch when I was in Denver
and he was in San Diego.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
So like, obviously I'm rooting for the older guy to
have success.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
But it's really fast, and it's really hard, And his
career didn't end because he was tired of playing football.
His career ended because he was not producing. So I'm
not sure what some time off, some rest going to do,
but I don't imagine that it's gonna go all that well.
I think they're probably better off when Riley Leonard gets
healthy or I don't know someone who's actually been playing
(19:09):
for ball.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
I know he's been coaching, but it's so fast.
Speaker 7 (19:11):
And so violent, and we see Aaron Rodgers who hasn't
stopped playing, like obviously the threat of getting hit has
changed the way that he plays. I'm assuming that Philip
Rivers is a normal human being and he's gonna be
a little.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Skittih Okay, explain that to me that you can see
that Rogers he's different now because he's afraid of getting hit.
Speaker 7 (19:31):
Yeah, I mean in saying he's afraid of getting hit
makes it feel insulting, like he's a reasonable person and
he can't move the way that he can't normally move, Like, yeah,
you're that willingness to hold onto the ball for half
a second longer and have a two hundred and fifty
pounds super athlete jump through your chin.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
Is it changes? It changes a.
Speaker 7 (19:53):
Lot when it hurts a little bit more and when
you're not as explosive and also when you don't feel
like you're in contention in the way that you once were.
So I think I'm not the only one who noticed it,
Like we all see it. He's more quick to get
rid of the ball. And the reason why I think
he had good numbers last week is because the Ravens
can't rush the passer. As soon as you get someone
who can rush the passer, you'll see the Aaron Rodgers
(20:14):
that we've seen most of this season return.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Who's the one quarterback though that above everybody else was
gonna stay in there and he was gonna take the
hit man.
Speaker 7 (20:27):
I think like Young Drew Brees as a guy that
got hit a bunch and was willing to stay in there.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (20:34):
He And again this goes back to him in San
Diego and earlier in his career. I think he later
in his career with the shoulder injury or excuse me,
the elbow injury and the age his offense turned into
quick pass stuff. But like that is something that stands
out in my mind. Of course, Steve Young was a
guy from growing up watching him, and Brady is definitely
(20:55):
that guy who was able to do that. He didn't
do it nearly as much in Tampa, but was willing
to stand in there and take those shots.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Dang. I'm always amazed though when we usually see the
end result, we don't see that quarterback getting smashed. It's
like right before he's gonna get hit, and then we
go all did a complete touchdown, and you know, meanwhile
he's getting a spatula in there, you know, peeling him
off the aster turf.
Speaker 7 (21:20):
We don't appreciate how hard does it even when we
pointed out it's impossible, I think, and I played football,
I don't think that it's ever hurt nearly as bad
as that, and they just hop right up. Doesn't matter
how big you're like, we see it over time. Cam
Newton might be the most impressive looking physical person ever
(21:41):
in life, even eventually his body broke down because you
can only take so.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
Many of those. They hurt.
Speaker 7 (21:47):
And I know we've all seen the sports science. It's
like the car crashes. All of us might have been
in accidents of different level. Like just imagine that ten
times a week you get into something like that, it's
going to catch up to you.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
Eventually.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
The Chiefs and the Dolphins have the same record. Does
that bring it into reality of you know, we keep going, yeah,
they got fifteen as long as you got fifteen there
and their records same as the Dolphins.
Speaker 7 (22:17):
It's funny because it feels like lazy analysis, but like,
fifteen's proven that we should respect him. But yeah, they've
been the same team for the past two or three
years with differing levels of defense, and we all thought
we were extra smart when we were like, but look,
it's gonna catch up to them, and it didn't catch
up to them. It finally is caught up to him,
(22:38):
Like the drop passes, Like, of course, these guys are
professional football players. They're not gonna drop a lot of
passes and they're going to have penalties, Like these things
are gonna happen. It just felt like in those situations
it always went their way in the past. And then,
of course if you're in a close game, that's when
the value of a quarterback goes up. So this team
survived a lot beating teams that were better than them
(22:59):
because of good fortune, good coaching, and a great quarterback,
and ultimately it caught up to them.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Talking to Dominic Foxworth, host of The Dominic Foxworth Show,
ESPN writer and contributor former NFL defenship back. Who's a
great team this year?
Speaker 7 (23:15):
Yeah, I think I would say the Packers and the
Rams are the teams that I would look at and say,
these are super Bowl caliber teams. Sometimes teams that don't
look like super Bowl caliber teams end.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
Up winning the super Bowl.
Speaker 7 (23:30):
It happens probably a couple times a decade, two, three,
four times a decade. That could certainly happen this year.
No one in the AFC do I look at and say, oh, yeah,
they're definitely. I'll show them and I can guarantee they'll
be at least in the conference game, and it'll be
a fluke if they don't make it. I feel like
I would say that if the Packers or the Rams
don't make it out of the NFC, I'd be surprised.
(23:52):
It'd be some sort of flucush streak that someone got
hot and ripped off of Joe Flacco style run, and
I would be surprised by it.
Speaker 5 (23:59):
But everybody else is so flawed in important ways.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Does the NFL have a long field goal problem?
Speaker 7 (24:06):
Yeah, it hasn't gotten there yet for me, Like, I
get the point that you're making, but I also feel like,
combined with the change and the kickoff rules and the
aggressiveness on fourth down, I think the incentive to kick
a long field goal is still not really that overwhelming.
Like I think right now we're kind of in a
(24:27):
sweet spot where guys are likely to go forward, teams
are likely to go for it on fourth down. It
feels like even within the five, we've had more teams
go for it on fourth down, which is what I want. Like,
I love the suspense of a last second field goal,
but I like it at the last second.
Speaker 5 (24:41):
If you're in the red zone in the third quarter,
I want you to go. I want you to throw
the ball. I want you to play football and not kick.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Could you see maybe raising the crossbar at some point,
like you know, we had to do this with the
extra point because it became formulaic. But can you see
the NFL doing something that will discourage or maybe say
encourage you to go for something instead of trying to
kick a field goal.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
I could see it happen.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
And again I haven't seen the numbers from this season,
so but I don't get the sense that it's become
a problem. And I think when you score, if you
kick a field goal or you score a touchdown the kickoffs.
I know the starting position has moved up for a
lot of teams, so it doesn't feel like as good
of a proposition to give.
Speaker 5 (25:30):
Up three points and then give them the ball.
Speaker 7 (25:32):
On the thirty five they get one first down and
they're in field goal range again. So like, I still
don't feel like we're there. But if we get there,
the NFL will have no problem change in the rule.
But I'm not sure that they would move to crossbar.
They're smarter than that. I think they would do something
outside of making a more obvious change, because that's when
we get upset when it's something we can see and
bothers us like they tweak the rules to a certain
(25:54):
extent that changes the incentive structure.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
The way that I'm talking about. Maybe they moved the
kickoff where they move.
Speaker 7 (25:59):
The kick off up even or back even further, so
that it even more accentuates the idea that if you score,
it better be worth it because you're going to give
the other team the ball at midfield. That's worth seven points,
that's not worth three.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
Why don't we have lasers going up the goal post,
because like, I mean, no, it's it can be an
exact science right, choose not to make it an exact science.
Speaker 7 (26:26):
Because we didn't build I think the idea that this
was going to be a thing that happened. Those uprights
they were so high. No one was kicking over them
at any point. I think putting lasers at the top
of the uprights that turn on at for field goals
and extra points might be something worth doing that we
wouldn't change or use the the chip that's in the ball,
but nobody was kicking it over the uprights before the past.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
That's a new thing, okay, but now they aren't. I
mean you could do fun colors there. This is this
is we're in the entertainment business here.
Speaker 7 (26:57):
I mean, you are betraying the gray hair that you have.
Is like, what are we doing?
Speaker 5 (27:04):
Like I thought that you're supposed to you're a future guy.
You want AI referees. Yeah, I would have assumed.
Speaker 7 (27:10):
So I'm the old guy the Cribune and it's like,
don't put lasers on my field, Like I want football,
Let's run the ball three yards cloud of dust.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
I added this gray hair. I actually have dark hair.
I put this on.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
It's beautiful. I like it.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
I need to get something. If you will it's coming
your way. Do you have any thoughts on the college
football playoffs?
Speaker 7 (27:32):
Yeah, I mean it's funny that we're arguing about these
teams that I think don't have a chance of getting in.
But I think ultimately, while we do focus, we zero
in on these like these micro issues. The macro issue
is that college football is trying to build these new
structures on top of a faulty foundation. And as long
(27:53):
as we have these conferences where the talent is so like,
the talent differential is so disparate.
Speaker 5 (27:58):
There's only twelve games, so.
Speaker 7 (28:00):
You're not gonna get a good idea of who's actually
good and who's actually bad. There's no way to solve this.
There's not a playoff bracket big enough, I think to
get an actual champ. Like we're in the between. We're
trying to build a professional league on top of these
amateur structures and until we like restructure all of it
(28:21):
and then there are clear conferences where we know who's
good and who's bad. In the NFL because they all
play teams that are all around the same level, we
don't really know in college. And then even in the playoffs,
you're looking at the consistency of kids who are eighteen
to twenty four, like, I can't think of anyone less
trustworthy than a man eighteen to twenty four.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Good to catch up with you. Good, thank you, Dominic,
No problem, Dan, thank you. Dominic Foxworth, host of The
Dominic Foxworth Show, ESPN contributor from our NFL Defenship Back
Johnny and Pittsburgh. Hey Johnny, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 9 (28:56):
Hey guys A sixty three time two sixty three ninety kens,
I have a whose career would you rather have? And
then a quick follow up on the Notre Dame break
New Heizel comments from yesterday. First of all, I would
only ask this from your show because of the totality
(29:17):
of your wisdom on this show and this panel. But
warn Moon or Jim Kelly and think about the totality
of their careers. Secondly, New heidel comments were awesome. I
love that dude and he makes a lot of great points.
And one thing I'm gonna say is think about the
Mown Invitational. Think about all these tournaments college hoops have
(29:39):
to get you excited about the upcoming season. Football doesn't
necessarily need it, but in order to have bowl games
instead of like irrelevant matchups Week one, Week two, like
Toledo or Youngstown State or whatever, no offense, make them
make them bowl games.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
And you know, if.
Speaker 9 (30:01):
Notre Dame is I think all sports fans like a
little chaos, and Notre Dame is going to be chaotic
going forward for more reasons than one. They are setting
a president with this nil money and bring you know,
touched on it yesterday, this nal money. This is only
going to get exacerbated the further we go.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Yeah, and I'm all in favor of putting the bowl
games to start the year to ensure that you get
quality matchups. Maybe you get a matchup that you're facing
somebody that you wouldn't normally face, you get promotional fallout
from that. It's going to be in September. The weather
will be fine, and it's just like college basketball. They
do this every year. Nobody goes all the ACC and
(30:45):
the Big ten are playing. Oh that's terrible, No, it's not.
It's great.
Speaker 10 (30:49):
Yes, Marvin, I think the big issue is going to
be all those ball games are over Christmas breaks, So
programming ESPN depends on.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
That program absolutely, and there's.
Speaker 10 (30:58):
So many people games on the twenty seventh twenty eight,
twenty ninth, the thirtieth of December, when people are off,
they're all for the holidays. It's going to be so
tough to try to fix it.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
I realize having been at the Mothership, the importance of
college football with those bowl games, and you get that
entire month that you own and the filler that's there.
We got bull games coming up Friday, I think, so
they're already starting, and maybe we do know your bowl
(31:29):
games on Friday. Yeah, but it's starting already. This is
what the mothership, and they will fight. They will fight this. Yes, Paulie.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
There's nothing more in disingenuous on social media where people
say I don't watch any of the ball games. Nobody
cares about the bowl games. The ratings are always really good.
People watch, even their exhibitions.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
Yeah, they watch. It's a filler. We're looking for something.
We watch machin on Tuesday night. Do you have the
first bowl game on Friday, paul.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
Course, I do.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
I think I think the first one is Saturday afternoon
or noon. The cricket celebration.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Oh that's it. Okay, that's really good.
Speaker 4 (32:06):
With the bands South Carolina State, Prairie Review, A and M.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
Can they tell us when the bands are going to
be on the field. I'll text you that we can
just tune in for that. Yes, all right, let me
take a break. More phone calls coming up. Paul Finebaumb
will join us in about a half hour from now.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
I think Shaq's gonna join us tomorrow or Friday. Rob
Gronkowski not sure if it's tomorrow or Friday as well.
You know, one of the things I love about Paul
Finbaum is I'm never quite sure where he stands on
a topic. You know, he's usually very neutral. So when
he says that the committee got it right, and the
crying from Notre Dame is quite frankly embarrassing. They cried,
(32:55):
they didn't get their way, and then they said, you know,
we're going home. We're taking our ball like a five
year old in the playground by not going to a
bull game. Why did they get it right? Because Notre
Dame had very little to show on his resume had
they joined the ACC which they by the way are
a member of in every other sport, they would have
played for the ACC championship game. Whull fine bomb of
(33:16):
the Mothership joining us on the program. Hey, you're a
little fired up about Notre Dame. What drew your ire?
Speaker 11 (33:25):
Yeah? But I have a correction, Dan, in the ACC,
Notre Dame is a member I think also in field hockey.
Speaker 5 (33:32):
So let me make sure I tell America fair enough.
Speaker 11 (33:37):
Dan, You've been around Notre Dame a lot, and I
spent most of Monday on ESDN talking about your interview
with the AD and I think if he had stopped there,
it would have been great. He went on a big platform,
he told us, told everybody off, but then he continued
to talk, and he talked himself into a corner and
(34:01):
ultimately Notre Dame's resume is good. It's not great.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
Is this committee good?
Speaker 7 (34:06):
No?
Speaker 2 (34:06):
No?
Speaker 11 (34:07):
I mean it was a clown show. We all know that,
and they changed the rules as they went along. But
ultimately I still felt Miami deserved to be in Did Alabama?
Should Alabama have made it?
Speaker 5 (34:20):
I think so?
Speaker 2 (34:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (34:21):
I said that because I live in Alabama and I
have a Nick Saban sad head in my bedroom. It's
because it's because I believe that they should not have
been eliminated by playing an extra game. But you know
all that Notre Dame is the story of the week
and was the one thing I don't understand that Pete
said here and later at a press conference, he made
(34:43):
all these threats.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
What has he done since making all these threats. Well,
I think that's on. I think that's coming up in January.
I think there'll be something that's happening. I think it
was smart to say, hey, we're gonna, you know, huddle,
and we're going to figure out what our next move is.
I thought they were too reactionary, you know, when the
kids said we're not going to play in a bowl game.
(35:06):
I think if they gave them a couple of days
to think about it. Even Pete's reaction when you know,
we reached out and he said, yeah, come on, and
then all of a sudden he said there's permanent damage.
I think if he would have stopped and said, hey,
explain to me how we're ahead of this team for
five weeks and then all of a sudden it gets
to the final you know, the day of reckoning, and
(35:28):
then they leap frog us. Explain that to me, I
think we all could have understood that if that happened
to Alabama. How would you react if Alabama was ahead
of Miami for five weeks and then Miami leaped frog them.
How would Greg Sanke, the Commissioner of the SEC reacted
to something like that. So there, I thought he was right.
(35:49):
I understand that. But he didn't stay with that. He
he you know, he expounded upon it, and I think
that's where everybody focused on all Notre Dame cry baby,
take your ball and go home.
Speaker 11 (36:04):
Yeah, Dan al Had it been Alabama, I would have
been on the I'm the footsteps of the Capitol calling
for a federal investigation sinking and I would have been
crashing the back gate at the White House.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
But but and I agree.
Speaker 11 (36:22):
I was on first take down the down the dial
when when the story broke about your interview, and I like,
oh my goodness, I mean this sounded like a major break.
But two days later found in fury signifying nothing, here
we are.
Speaker 5 (36:35):
But that's okay.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (36:37):
It's been the story of the weekend and Notre Dame
got this, you know, continued to be in the news.
And by the way, it's about it's about the most
relevancy has had at least since last year's National Championship game.
They've taken the attention off Marcus Freeman. Maybe looking around at.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
The NFL, Well, you know who was happy about this
is Lane Kiffin. Oh yeah, if the spotlight shifted off
Lane Kiffin, He's like, coach is clear?
Speaker 11 (37:02):
Yeah, maybe not though I think we both know Lane
well enough to go that he sicks up every morning
and if his Twitter mentioned starts to go down, he's upset.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
He's letting his coaches coach for old Like I'm trying
to understand this from old missus perspective that you don't
want Lane, but you'll take his coaches. Why not a
clean break?
Speaker 11 (37:27):
It's pretty obviously just did not trust Lane and.
Speaker 8 (37:33):
Dan.
Speaker 11 (37:34):
I don't want to get in trouble with Nick Satan,
but the president was really set in twenty sixteen. Everybody
knows what happened, and Kiffin was on the Alabama staff.
He got hired by Florida Atlantic and he remained, but
he was he.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
Did such a poor job.
Speaker 11 (37:51):
I had several people come up to me this weekend
in Atlanta and say, yeah, I was on the field
with Kiffin and Kiffin. I mean during a practice, not
after practic It's not during warm up. Kiffen's over there
in the corner on the phone trying to get his
coaching staff together. He was not paying attention, and Saban
got so fed up he fired him. But then Saban
was out there saying, oh, Lane should be at old
(38:13):
miss h and I think you all missed. People just
did not want that. They didn't believe that Kiffen could
be trusted with. I think the passwords to the computer
where all the secrets were with recruiting and everything else,
even though he had just been there the day before.
It was a mess. But it's Lane Kiffen, and you
always expect, you know, some theatrics.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
Did old Miss ever have a chance here? No?
Speaker 11 (38:38):
I don't think so. I mean Lane Kiffen is like
is like that girlfriend in high school you walk into
the party and she's looking right over your shoulder at
a quarterback. I mean, Lane never can be He's been
looking for years. Three years ago he almost took the
Auburn job, just close Two years ago he wanted the
(38:58):
Alabama job, but he never got a call. And last
year he was I think he was already packing to
go down to Florida, and Lane screwed that one enough.
He took his old Miss team down to Florida and lost,
which saved Billy Day for Your's job. But by the
time he got the mid season, he knew Florida was
going to be opened. But the real moment that occurred
(39:18):
was when Brian Kelly got fired. Kiffin's Oh my goodness,
I could actually have that job, which which is a
better job than Florida. That's a better job than all this.
That's not really You don't need me to say that.
Nick Saban told him that, because Nick Saban has told
a lot of people that, I mean, Nick Saban had
this love affair with LSU, but he couldn't he couldn't
stay there because he had so many NFL openings. But
(39:40):
he never quite got over it, even though he only
won six national championships at Alabama.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Where is Lane Kiffen In five years, he might still.
Speaker 11 (39:50):
Be in LFU, but he's going to have to win
a national championship. But I would think ultimately he'll move on.
I don't know if Lane goes back to the NFL
at some point. I mean, I think now that Al
Davis has been dead, and varied for a number of years.
I think the reverberations from that are over. But I
think ultimately he's just never going to be happy anywhere.
But I think he could get a national championship at
(40:12):
L Dan. Stop me if you've heard this before, but
Less Miles and at Oseron both won national championships at
L two. The two of us could walk in off
the street and win a national championship down there. It's
not that hard.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
Paul finebaumb hosts of The Paul Finebaum Show Monday through
Friday on SEC Network from three to seven Eastern. What
kind of changes do we have in the off season
with college football?
Speaker 11 (40:36):
Well, guess they're going to have a meeting Dan, probably
at a five star resort somewhere near the near the
southern calum Mexican border, so it's warm in the winter,
and they'll retool the CFP. They'll put in a couple
of tweaks that don't make any sense, but that's going
to be the big one. They've already made most of
(40:58):
the rules. The transportal is now back to January so
the ball season doesn't get overwhelmed the ball season that
I think they're still looking for people to play in
a ball game. But ultimately this Notre Dame ACC conversation
is going to dominate once they start meeting again in January.
(41:19):
But I should have just said nothing's going to change.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go so long. Could
you see Notre Dame saying, you know what, We're going
to go into the Big Ten with all of our
sports and we will play a limited schedule, partial schedule
with the Big Ten.
Speaker 11 (41:35):
It could happen now they have that contract with the ACC,
and I'm sure some of the bluster by Pete was
to get out of that, and I'm sure at some
point the ACC is going to let them go. But yeah,
the SEC and the Big Ten would probably be more
than happy to fill in that role. But I think
the Big Ten's where they belong, even on a limited schedule.
It's good for TV. I'm sure Fox and all the
(41:57):
seventeen other networks that the Big Ten is on love
to do a five game schedule, especially with Ohio State
and Michigan and some of the bigger names in the
Big Ten because that's really all they do in the
in the ACC. And and they they went in and
tweaked it where now they're playing the better. They're not
just playing Wake Forest anymore. They're playing Clemson in Miami
(42:18):
and the schools that matter. You believe in Indiana, Yes,
it's taken me. I am the I mean, it's too
late to get on the bandwagon. I've missed that and
it also ran over my foot. But yes, I believe
in them.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
I mean that was I did not.
Speaker 11 (42:34):
I mean, I think that's pretty well known. But I mean,
I'm I'm I'm half blind, but I'm entirely blind. I
can see how good they are.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
It's one of the great stories though in recent college football.
I mean, based off the history and you know when
we were growing up Indiana. I mean, it's losing his
programming in college football. And to do this in a
two year period any stage, and.
Speaker 11 (42:59):
To think about the Saturday night in New York during
that just fantastic Heisman show, which I know you're you're
a big fan of tune in at age fifty seven
and you have not missed anything. By the way, the
fact that Indiana and Vanderbilt are two of the four
schools represented among the finalists is pretty spectacular.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, when you think about it growing
up Vandy was always the and such and such one
by over Vandy Indiana. Ohio State beats Indiana fifty five
to nothing, and here you have two Heisman candidates there.
Pretty amazing.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (43:39):
I mean I used to cover Alabama games when people
were really intent on the final series, and that was
whether Alabama covered the forty two points spread against Vanderbilt
or not.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Do you have anything nice to say about anybody today?
Speaker 8 (43:56):
Dan?
Speaker 11 (43:57):
Can I get back to you on that?
Speaker 2 (43:59):
Yes, you can, Thank you, Paul. That's Paul Finbaugh, Voice
of the SEC Paul Finbaum Show, every Monday through Friday
on SEC Network three to seven Eastern Snarky. Let's see
Brooks in Florida. Hi Brooks, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 12 (44:20):
Hey? Dan, thanks for taking my call. I had two comments.
One on the college football playoff. I'm thinking, why don't
we let Vegas just handle the rankings and get rid
of the committee because Vegas tells you who's the better
team anyways.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
And yeah, yeah, we've brought that up before. I forget
what the reason. I think it made people uncomfortable if
Vegas was running college football. But they're the most objective,
like they have the most to lose. In this scenario,
millions and millions of dollars. But thank you Brooks. Yeah,
(44:53):
we've mentioned that before. Bucky in Illinois. Hi, what's on
your mind?
Speaker 12 (44:59):
Hey?
Speaker 13 (45:00):
He thanks for taking my call. Quick comment, and then
I got a poll question for you and the danat
quick comment about the college footwall playoff. If you're if
you're from the American or you're from the Dumbbelt Conference
and you're gonna make the college football playoff like you
automatically have to be undefeated to get in in my opinion.
Speaker 14 (45:20):
But quick quick poll question for you in the Danete. Okay, see,
as a senior college football player, would you rather go
to a Division III school win the Gaglyardi Trophy and
win a national championship? Or would you rather go and
ride the bench for an Ohio State and win a
(45:41):
national championship that way?
Speaker 5 (45:42):
M okay?
Speaker 2 (45:43):
Think, so you get to be a bench player for
Ohio State win a national championship, but I don't get
a scholarship at Ohio State. Is that what you're saying?
Speaker 14 (45:54):
Probably not?
Speaker 2 (45:55):
Probably not okay, because if I got a scholarship at
Ohio State, I'm gonna take that because then I'm I
got my school paid for you go Division three, you
got to pay for it, usually yourself. You get a
little financial aid. Yes, Marvin, but.
Speaker 10 (46:09):
If you're on scholarship as an athlete at Ohio State,
you would want to play somewhere else because you were
probably all states somewhere. So you're not going to go
to Ohio State just to say the bench, just to
say I went to Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Right, depends on if you grew up in Ohio and
you want to be an Ohio State Buckeye, the just
ride the bench. I don't Yeah, maybe I don't know.
The Division III. I love watching that. I love watching
the smaller schools play for championships and you know, you
get it's it's always fun to see those schools and
(46:44):
how much it means to them. And the fact North
Dakota State is out that South Dakota State, I think
is out as well, So it's wide open there in
the FBS. Yes, Marvin, no, no, no, I was shaking
my head. I was great, Oh, thank you. Yeah, Paul.
Speaker 4 (47:01):
Division three Final four this weekend, Dan, I know you're watching,
but it's John Carroll versus Barry Wheaton versus UW.
Speaker 2 (47:07):
River Falls. That's some heavyweights. Yeah that's different.
Speaker 4 (47:11):
Yeah, yeah, like UW Whitewaters out, Mount Union's out fresh blood.
Speaker 2 (47:16):
Yeah, John Carroll used to be I think the Don
Shula went to John Carroll. I believe, I believe. But
they used to be a football powerhouse. Yes, more of it.
Speaker 10 (47:25):
I did have one question, Okay, that pole question. Ohio
State or D three. That's a big jump. Maybe Ohio
State one double A or something like that. But you
can't you sit the bench at Ohio State or you
play D three.
Speaker 2 (47:38):
So would you rather go to North Dakota State and
play for them and win a national championship or be
a bench player at Ohio State and they won a
national championship?
Speaker 5 (47:47):
Play at North Dakota State.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
I'd rather play at North Dakota State. I mean that's
a high level. Yes, Todd, would you play.
Speaker 5 (47:53):
For Wheaton if you can't tolerate gluten?
Speaker 2 (47:55):
Thank you Todd? Yes, Paul, I don't know I should
let the Yeah you should, I should. Yeah, I would
distance myself. Yeah, how about we take a break, last
call for fall. I didn't know Todd was here today. Okay,
if I say something, no insituation, Hey, but their pants
shame way we do all right, huh the look on
(48:20):
Lou Holtz's face when I did my Lou Holtz impersonation
to him. That did not go well as it shouldn't have.
What my it's my impersonation? Pretty good, oh Dan.
Speaker 4 (48:31):
The more real it is, the worse it is.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
Oh correct. So I'm asking, was it a good impersonation? Yeah? Yeah, okay,
I think that's all I cared about.
Speaker 1 (48:43):
S try but their pants on?
Speaker 2 (48:45):
Same way?
Speaker 5 (48:45):
Wait, he was bothered by the jac he did.
Speaker 2 (48:47):
He said, First of all, Church, I don't say that.
I'm not saying that word. Never take the Lord's leaving Jane.
Speaker 5 (48:54):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
Okay, But aside from that, how did it sound? Hey,
but their pants shame way we do
