Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome to Waken Jake, myself, Jake's story, Ellie
at Talkin' Jake. On any social media you can find me.
David Mendelssohn, Big baby David, as we're talking the world
of sports and a chunk of baseball. But how about
my guy Danny Hurley, he's staying at Yukon. That was
a nice little afternoon tidbit that. Let's be honest, I
(00:22):
don't think anyone really knew which way that was gonna go.
I guess as a Yukon fan myself, my father went
to Yukon, grew up in Connecticut. They are pro sports team.
God damn you Carolina Hurricanes. They yeah, I don't, I
don't know. In I think in a way, if we
(00:44):
saw the number come out and it was insane, it
was like, yeah, it's the Lakers and you got thrown
a ton of money and we get it, like that's
how the coaching carousel works. Pretty cool. I mean, still
a big number. Six six years for seventy or seven
years for sixty.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I believe six for seventy was the reported decline to offer.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
It's a lot of coin. I did see people saying
like in California taxes. The Lakers situation isn't good, and
Yukon's is kind of the best ever. Yeah, so maybe
if it was in like a year it's in a
hypothetical world where Yukon's not coming off back to back
and going for a three peat. Well, the other thing,
like I was gonna say, Dan Hurley's stock is well,
(01:31):
it's in a really good place. I was gonna say,
it can't go down, but that's not how sports works.
And they're probably they're probably not gonna three peat, but
maybe they will. They Yeah, I don't know. I don't.
I don't if it was a different opportunity, like I
guess I'm trying to think. I don't know. If the
MAVs gig came available and Luca was locked up, it's like, Okay,
(01:52):
you got a chance to coach Luka Doncic in the
NBA for five years, you go do that. Lebron's forty.
It's a good day for Yukon, a good day for Connectic.
I'll let you know January first, mark your calendar if
Yukon's gonna win it all again. That's what I did
last year. So I'm interested to see. But that was
some good news for me. We also had a fun night.
We're gonna go through. The Athletic had an article. They
(02:15):
did a player poll. I always find that interesting. I
think they got one hundred players to engage with it.
Some best player stuff, some who don't you want to
play with? Some where do you want to play that?
I always think it's interesting to go through that. That
king Buster had an article, but it was kind of
trade deadline again, and we did that last week. I
(02:37):
should also probably reach out to Foolish because we're probably
coming up on game time with him, so we'll see
what he has going on. You guys usually like some
life stories. We had a fun one last night. We
went to Yankees Dodgers. As media. We record talking Yanks there.
The stadium's in a really awesome spot. It's ready to pop.
(02:58):
People are excited for these Yankees. I gotta lean back
and for everyone looking at the YouTube, I look somewhere
between a child and a NASCAR driver that lost his way.
Like I looked like a NASCAR driver that got suspended
for doing drugs. Ted I shirt doesn't help with that.
(03:20):
And if you're watching it, I'm shifting a lot. My
back is really hurting. So that's the old side while
looking young in the front. But it was it was
a good time last night. It's good talking to David
Cohne after the game. That was nice our guy. And
that's where I actually I got excited. Buster wrote an
article because King Buster was in the building. It was
(03:42):
a good weekend for baseball. The London series, it's always
kind of fun. It's fun to turn on that Saturday
one pm game and it's like, Wow, they're they're over there,
and Bryce and the Phillies put on a show for
a day. Your Metropolitans bounce back. Let's get into the
player polm So this is over at the Athletic and
(04:04):
I think they had a bunch of their staff contribute
to it. So if I see someone jump out, I'll
do my best. I think the best or number one,
you gotta punch him in the teeth, hit him with
the good stuff. Who is the best player in baseball?
If you follow, you know who's gonna win that? And
(04:28):
I'd love to know. I'm trying to find when this
article was taken because the number two answer is a
little surprising. The number one player show Hey Tani, forty
six percent Yes, he can play both ways, even when
he's only playing one way. He's pretty talented. I was
a little surprised, sly Ronald Cooney Junior twenty six point
(04:49):
five percent. Obviously, he had the the amazing year last
year that I even on this show. I think when
he got hurt, I gasped a little bit because for
him to lead the league in on base percentage and
ops while stealing seventy three bases, it's an insane season.
(05:11):
He led in hits one hundred and forty nine runs.
That's that's a really good two seasons for a ballplayer.
So I get it. I guess the other thing that's
thrown me off with Ronnie got forty one home or
seventy three steals. You understand it. He only has one
(05:31):
other like full season being great, and that's going back
to like twenty nineteen. So I know he lit it
up last year. He's twenty five and he was coming
off injury, and here we are this year. He's out
for the season, and in the forty nine games he played,
he was very much kind of average. And the other
(05:52):
thing that I guess surprised me about the voting in
the percentage defensively he's never been super well regarded. He
has a strong arm, but I don't want to say
they hide him in right field, but I don't know
for how talented he is at everything else. Yeah, you'd
think there'd be a little more defensively the pure speed,
(06:14):
which then leads to the guys that this makes a
lot of sense. Mookie Bets and Aaron Judge time tied
for eight point eight percent of the vote. If you've
seen what our guy, Aaron Judge has been doing recently,
it's nuts. He's on pace for sixty again, so we'll see.
And that's including a quote unquote slow start, But I
(06:37):
guess you can include the slow start if you're going
to include the insane past month he's been on where
he's been a one dot five ops guy. And if
I'm doing this with Ronald Acuna junior, Judge has been
playing center field and like a solid center he's not
special out there. He doesn't have the range of the
elite center field you think of, whether that's you know,
(07:00):
a younger Buckston, Harrison Bader, you know, any of the
truly good defensive center fielders at Kermeyer. But he plays
a fine center field. He kind of glides, so if
the ball has air under it, he's got a chance
to get there. And he has one of the strongest arms,
so's it's just crazy what he does at six foot seven,
(07:20):
two hundred eighty two pounds. And outside of that, he's
a great right fielder, but he's been playing center because
the Yankees have needed a center fielder. Him and Mookie
being tied is kind of perfect because Mookie Bets. If
you have been listening to the show, thank you. If
you're new, thank you, and subscribe to the YouTube channel.
(07:44):
When Mookie was going to short, I like short circuited.
There's part of me that didn't want it to work
because short stops a sacred position on the baseball field.
There's a part of me that wanted to work because
it's Mookie Betts and we've landed in the middle. And
when I say in the middle, Mookie's raking nine to
(08:06):
fourteen OPS three zero nine batting average four to ten,
a one to sixty OPS plus, which he finished second
in the MVP last year. He had a nine eighty
seven OPS plus so plus like seventy five points ops wise.
But the ops or excuse me, ops wise ops plus
(08:27):
it's nearly the same one sixty three to one sixty
this year.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
I think he was hitless last night and it was
the same going into yesterday.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
So yeah, you know, just another reminder of what's going
on around the league right now. Either way. I mean,
there's still a good argument he shouldn't be playing shortstop,
and the metrics don't love him, and that makes sense
because he's thirty one years old. A lot of guys
that are well trained thirty one year old shortstops.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Are the age they get just moved off.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
It aren't good at still playing shortstop at that age.
So the fact he's kind of learning that on the
fly again insane. And yeah, I Mooki and Judge, I won't,
I won't bicker, I won't Yankee Fanya like, I don't care.
You could put Mooki in right field and he might
be one of the few guys that can outplay Judge
(09:17):
out there while being able to play shortstop in second base.
So I think Mooki's versatility Judge, I think has shown
with the bat the past two years that he's kind
of in his own area right now. But with what like,
even if Mooki's playing a mediocre shortstop that's still insanely valuable.
(09:40):
That allows them to play ta Oscar in the outfield,
and Taoskar Hernandez ripped up the Yankees this weekend. So
his ability to do that, Yeah, no argument. And I
think again, I'm not sure when they took this vote.
They took this vote tomorrow, MOOKI and Judge leapfrog Akunya.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Right, I think just because of the fact that Kunya
is out let alone, they like hadn't been having his
best year.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
And I again, I don't want this to come off rude.
Torontald Lukunya Junior. But the stat page is good to
nine hundred ops, he's one of the fastest guys in
the league. But there's a little bit of inconsistency slash
he has two seasons over one hundred games with an
(10:29):
OPS in the eights are higher, Like you know, like
I know, that's a weird way to phrase it, and
that's slightly rude, But I don't know when we're doing
top players in the league, when we're comparing bets, Judge show, Hey,
uh so I was a little I was a little
surprised to see that, Uh, Mike Trout came in fifth
(10:52):
obviously Mike Trout and then players who received one vote,
so they got one hundred and two votes on this.
So if Mookie and Judge got eight point percent, what
does that mean that they got nine votes? Probably yeah,
I'm a I'm a good guessing math guy. Yeah, not
sure if that's true. Players receiving one vote? Bryce Harper,
(11:21):
why not sure? I did do a fun you know,
Bryce had a nice moment over the weekend. He Homer's
in London. He does a soccer goal. Selly, I liked it,
I didn't love I didn't think the slide was perfect.
And then a part we forgot to mention on talking
baseball today after that, him yelling, I love soccer. I
love soccer. It's a little off but kind of funny.
(11:47):
So I don't know what to do with that. Just
got a text from Jeff Passing. Oh I think it's
I think one of those kids he brought to the
warehouse hit a monster home run. Oh okay, so yeah,
if you have no idea. When we did a warehouse
video with Jeff Passing his kid and one of his
(12:08):
kid's friends, and one of them was a moose, and
Passing kind of told us like that kid. Seems like
that kid's got a chance. And he just sent a
video of him hitting a grand Slam. So there's a
Jeff Passing update today. Bryce Harper, Gunner Henderson quickly rising
amongst those ranks. Gunner Henderson's older comrade Corey Seeger Jose
(12:36):
Ramirez got to vote. Adley Rushman always sneaks away in there,
and then the one that fell off. And you do
have to remember player voting sometimes can be a little
willy nilly. Zach Wheeler. Zach Wheeler got to vote really good,
Maybe he is the best player in baseball. Maybe I
(12:57):
don't know. Let's see, they have quotes about players. None
of those are really good. Talking about how good Akunya
is in BP. Yeah, Otani judge. Those guys put on
shows too. Uh, this is where things get a little
more spicy. Who is the most overrated player in baseball? Hello?
(13:25):
Fifty nine votes? So maybe some more guys were a
little gun shy on this BBD. If I had do
you are you looking at the article?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
I've been looking at it.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
I was gonna have you guess, but then I just
know you have the answer. Uh number one answer. I
like to think I would have guessed, uh, it goes
to Jazz Chisholm Junior. Now that there's a couple things
in play here, I do think jealousy becomes a factor
(13:58):
for some guys. In the fact he was on MLB
The Show, I think there's a jealousy factor there.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
I also it's a healthy percentage of that vote.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
I also think you have to be honest. I mean,
a he's a swag guy. He's the hair, the chain,
the shoes, all of it. Okay, we're I'm about that.
Look at me. I'm in h Does he get the
cover of MLB The Show of his name is Roger Smith?
(14:33):
Probably not. I think some guys are just like jealous
of his name. In fact, he goes by Jazz. That's
pretty sick. The other side of it, as we just
came off talking about the best players in the game,
Mike Trout has an argument for Inner Circle Hall of Famer.
What Judge is doing in a time frame is crazy.
Show Hayes breaking the game. He's like a healthy babe
(14:57):
Ruth who pitches. I guess he's not healthy. Well, I
meant in shape anyways. Jazz Chisholm's career numbers two forty
six batting average a three zero seven on base percentage
of one zero three oh ps plus. By the way,
he's on par with those numbers right now as a
(15:19):
middle infielder doing that, I think there could be a
little more value. They moved him out to center, and
he has an injury history and he really has no
good full season the only part that's a caveat there
(15:39):
or no. I thought that was the twenty twenty season.
He played sixty games in twenty twenty two. What's Jazz
Chishom's best season, BBDLL, I'll leave it to you.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
I would say it's that twenty twenty two season. He
was awesome, but then.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Hurt sixty games. Yeah, sixty games. He's played three hundred
and sixty six in his career. I read the career
numbers before, you know. When he first moved to centerfield,
he was like, I'm gonna win the gold Glove. Hasn't
necessarily done that yet. I don't know. I don't think
he grades out great in centerfield. Maybe he's gotten better.
(16:15):
Most homers he's ever had in the season is nineteen.
Most RBI he's ever had a season is fifty three.
He has a twenty three stolen based season and a
twenty two stolen based season. He's got to be healthy
and he's got to play a little better. And it
also doesn't help that he is on the Miami Marlins,
(16:35):
which will be brought up later in a different athletic area.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Savant bubbles on defensively good about average. He was slightly plus.
He was more plus last year. Okay, shocked me. I
mean I would have figured another year and he's like
more comfortable and savant bubbles aren't everything.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Yeah, but maybe. I mean I've seen him track down balls.
It's just the kind I can watch it very much
at all. Reverse of what we said about Mookie Bets,
Like Mookie Bets move to the middle infield somehow where
if you can get offensive production from that position, and
centerfield counts two. We do that separately, but still outfield
versus infield. That you understand why Jazz Chisholm was the
(17:21):
runaway winner with twenty percent of the vote. A couple
guys on this list starts to get a little crazy,
and again you do have to remember the sample size here.
Number two is Anthony Rendon, which doesn't really make sense
to me because, like, I feel like he's been I mean,
(17:44):
who's still calling him like a top third baseman in
the league.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Yeah, I think a lot of players and we don't
know which ones answered this poll, but think of rated
as how well you're play you're paid.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Yeah, God, don't look it, man. I realized there's a
lot of Rendo jokes out there to be had, and
he openly isn't in love with the game. This is
a job for him, man. Most games he's ever played,
(18:22):
he has been an Anaheim Angel for five years now.
Most games he's ever played in a season, I'll let
you guess if you want.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
I'd matched the Jazz number off the top of my head,
but I'm thinking negatively.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Most games he's ever played as a Los Angeles Angel
is fifty eight.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
I busted.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
They play one hundred and sixty two. Half being fair
to him, he played fifty two in the sixty game
twenty twenty season and he played well that year, finished
at the MVP years ago.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Now you're one of the deal.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
He uh. In the past four years, it's really in
the past four years, he's played one hundred and sixty
seven games, so one season in four years, basically two
thirty nine three thirty six A six ninety three ops. Yeah,
I just I guess if you're talking about him getting paid, Yeah,
(19:27):
but I don't. I don't think anyone around baseball fancies him.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
That isn't the answer they were looking for when they
asked Yeahestion.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Third was Carlos Correa, which he's now entered an interesting spot.
You know, everything we did with Correa, the free agency
and is ugly and chaotic. Last year was a really
ugly season for him. One hundred and thirty five games. Uh,
he was a ninety six ops plus two thirds three
(20:00):
to twelve, led the league in double plays with thirty
which that's that's a big number in that column. Uh.
I want to give him some credit. Currently, his season
stats are in better standing than I thought they would.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Be compared to the league average.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
For sure, seven seven six ops, which in a current
year that's a one twenty three OPS plus. I do
want to see, we just played them. He made a
couple decent plays at shortstop. He obviously still has the
arm strength. OAA still likes him. Okay, So I don't know.
(20:34):
I think with Correa's last season, it makes a little
sense to me because we're talking the contract, how he's
viewed by his peers. Maybe I'm just biased now because
I got to shake his hand and he was nice
to me and Jose McFly so uh and in classic
Jose McFly fashion, I think Joe's was live streaming and
(20:58):
he was like, yo, guys, we met today. He was
a dude. He like brought a blitz ball. He's like
a solid interaction me, me, Trev, Joe's and Correa and
Joe's was just doing like a I know this isn't
what you want me to hear right now, but like
Correa was a cool cat. Oh and someone in his
life was like, do you forgive him for cheating? And
(21:18):
Joe's like hell no, h so uh they didn't discuss
that at the time. Uh. I did a head till
when I saw Korea. It makes sense with last year man.
His baseball savant is in a really good page. Yeah,
that's I don't know if he can give even those
numbers at shortstop playing defense the way he can. Yeah,
(21:41):
I would get him off of that list. So I
guess here I am Carlos Correa guy.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Yeah, I guess that's gotta be contract cheating scandal personality.
But yeah, and I mean we and everybody who knows
him I think has said good things about him. And
now we've had an.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Interaction six point seven percent of the vote, which out
of fifty nine votes, that means like four people.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
So yeah, any given set, what is it? And then
it's just like a thing that happened last year, like
is it their specific injury?
Speaker 1 (22:20):
Just I think he missed, he missed, he missed, he
had an eye Elston, So I don't know. I don't
know what that was this year, Trevor.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
I feel like trev hasn't mentioned that to us.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
We know a guy close to the situation, and then
some names that I don't know. It starts to get
a little, a little less appetizing. Tim Anderson, he's fallen
off pretty hard. Jack Flaherty our guy. That's kind of fair,
but it's not this year. He's bounced back in a
(22:51):
big way. He's punching tickets. And then it's just all
over the board of some great players, some not like
Alonso Bellinger, Ragman, Elie de la Cruz, Machado Snell. I
don't know. I think those results end up getting underwhelming.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
I see what the reason any one person would say.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
That, But going solely on vibes bro and I do
think they factored in how good you are at baseball,
but going solely on vibes, who do you most want
on your team? His name is Mookie Betts. He was
the number one answer twelve point six percent. Show hey
(23:34):
number two good time to be a Dodgers fan said
that before said that a lot. Harper judge. The guys
that stand out amongst this crew, Kyle Schwarber, Lance Lynn
pretty up there on the list, Willia Dama's big style guy.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
The only the two guys that got a couple of
votes on this list that aren't like dudes or I
guess Keik Hernandez who kind of an all time vibes
guy at this point. Garrett Stubbs, Yeah, Harper loves him.
Philly loves him, even though he lost it for the
(24:17):
Snakes last year. That's dumb. Clabor Torres received one vote
sure second and errors found that out before recording this.
Taly de la Cruz didn't like that. Evaluate this statement.
(24:40):
The players were asked, ninety eight of them answered Anthony
Rendon was right. The season is too long. I would
have guess this came back fifty to fifty came back
sixty eight point three percent. No, that's a little surprising
to me. The baseball season is a bit of a grind.
(25:02):
You hear a lot of players talk about it. I mean,
the actual length doesn't feel bad. It feels like we
could mix in a couple more off days. But yeah,
I was surprised the players didn't fight back on that
a little more.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
Yeah. I wonder if that ties back to like PA stuff,
because they've been really said to them, like, don't say
we should play less and we get paid less. A
couple of quotes sounded I read them a little bit
that way.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
Yeah, the quotes, so these are the yes among the
among the nose, that's what those the yes people. Some
are logical. Some one was like, yes, but that's an
easy way out. We get paid a lot of money. Okay,
it's a grind and a half. But there's worst things
we could be doing. Uh, what's this? Records one has
(25:59):
thrown me out? If there's no reason we can't reform
at it to one hundred and twenty one hundred twenty
five games without more, with more off days in recovery.
The game is made for us to get hurt. WHOA,
but it would ruin records in the world likes records.
They're a little spurned. Yeah, I think I think the
answer is, and this is one of the quotes, if
(26:20):
you cut out ten games, just add up sprinkling off days.
I think you could keep guys healthier, keep pictures healthier.
I think there's an answer there. I wonder if baseball
ever gets there. That's such a tough thing for them
to negotiate.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Yeah, and we got a taste of it for pandemic
season and it was awful, stawful conversations all.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
I wonder if they could do do what football did right.
Football got rid of a preseason game, added a regular
season game. Yeah, I don't know, cut spring training down
just a little bit. I think everyone would sign up
for that. I don't know, daydreaming. This was maybe my
(27:07):
favorite question in this exercise. If contracts, state taxes, and
rosters were not a factor, which team would you sign with?
So this is just supposed to be basically it's the
vibes question. If the money was the same, no taxes,
(27:33):
no who else is on the roster? So it becomes
a little bit location and I think there's just organization respect,
like who's a well regarded organization and when you say
that the Braves are number one, and I think that
makes sense. They said that a few of the votes.
(27:53):
Location still plays and there's a lot of baseball boys
from the South. Atlanta has an amazing track record. Go
look at their Baseball Reference the last twenty five years
or so. I mean their first place in that NL East.
Off the top of my head, it's like twenty out
of twenty five, I look it up. But come on
(28:16):
that kind of research. This hour done number two surprised
me a little bit. The Boston Red Sox love that
dirty water Boston, You're my home. The Braves quote they
got was, well, a they got a Braids fan growing up,
(28:38):
which is always a concert reminder that the Braves were
on TV a lot, so people had access to them.
I also mentioned the location the Red Sox quote as
a player said, it's basically a museum kind is. It's
a cool experience just seeing that wall. For some reason,
the stadium feels massive to right field but miniature to
(29:00):
left field. I get it. And then even one of
the players that voted Braves was like, I'd love to
play for the Red Sox or the Yankees for like
one year and then just be in Atlanta, still play
competitive baseball, but also probably less like death threats and
people yelling at you in the streets. But that's the
(29:21):
beauty of it. That's New York in the Red Sox, Dodgers, Rangers, Yankees, Cubs.
So I don't know. I think Rangers surprised me. Yeah,
those other teams not as much. Rangers a little bit.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
I know they just won. Do you think that's a
taxes and new stadium thing.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
Yeah, I mean in theory, it's not supposed to be
taxes a new stadium, right, but I could see that
being Uh one Texas. One Texas player did say their
new ballpark is really nice. So it is one of
those things when you actually get in players head sometimes
you're not sure what you're gonna find. Uh, But they're dudes.
(30:04):
These are dudes that have played sports their whole life.
That new ballpark being really nice is what they made
their quote unquote fake life decision around what organizations have
bad excuse me, bad reputations. The Oakland Athletics ran away
with it forty out of seventy nine votes, White Sox
(30:27):
with nineteen. The more and more you hear out of
the White Sox org, the worse it gets and the
more you try to really process it. Chicago's a big city.
That team should have a lot more success. The Angels,
my Rockies, Yeah, kind of chalky. You get to the Mets.
(30:47):
Yankees did get two votes, and those votes were because
no one wants to play for them. A bunch of rules.
Hell yeah, every other ORG is exactly exactly what you think, man,
White Sox. If you're going and you're gonna look up
how successful the Braves have been, go look up how
(31:08):
not successful the White Sox have been, and then think
about all the markets in that division. It's kind of
nutty what they've put out on the field. It's an
Olympics one on here. I don't know it was. It
was split. I think it would be really cool and
good for the game, but the actual logistics are a
(31:29):
nightmare to break up an MLB season because what do
you do do you make it one hundred and thirty
game season and let guys play in the Olympics, and
then you've got other injuries and how are they getting paid?
Speaker 2 (31:42):
A lot of guys who aren't on Olympics rosters?
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Yeah, just like so, then are we still playing games
with other cats, and then are those guys getting paid?
Is that messing with service time gets more complicated? Then
let's play ball in the Olympics. And the vote came
out to fifty percent. Have analytics helped your career or
(32:05):
made no difference or hurt your career? Seventy six percent helped. Yeah,
this makes sense. We use that information to get better
bing bong eleven percent. No difference also kind of makes sense.
Hey man, I we're playing a sport here. I'm trying
(32:25):
to hit a ball. If I'm good and I've got
a good formula for hitting that ball, not a lot
of not a lot of data can help me. Maybe
they're being ignorant, maybe they're not. Eight point six percent
said both helped and hurt a kind of a cop out.
That just means you've tried different things, so that would
(32:47):
just be helped at the end, could have hurt you
for a little bit. I suppose I'll stop being tough
on it. Three point two percent of people said it hurt.
I don't know. It feels just like a little salt there.
It feels just like a little salt there. I mean
at this point to say analytics really hurt your career,
and I'll check myself because we got mad at Yankees
(33:10):
analytics for just believing that hard hit is everything, so
there can be something there. I was also gonna say, like,
I don't know, imagine if they were like, hey, throw
this pitch and you got hurt thrown that pitch. Sweet
the sweeper UCL injury. Yeah, I'd be pretty mad about that.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Just trying to max out velo and that's what everybody
is doing.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
Uh, let's see. Oh, here's the here's the both analytics
hurt my career by overthinking it, but helped it by
learning the game and how is it? How it's going?
You'd lot you had to like analytics to learn how
to adapt. Okay, wrapping this up, Billy Eppler got got
(33:56):
suspended for PHANTOMI eeling players. They asked players if they've
ever heard that or seen that happening. Sixty five percent
said yes, Yeah, was Dodgers offseason spending good? Ninety two
percent said yes, come on? And then I think the
final one I'll touch on was a MLB adopting a
(34:18):
salary cap and floor system used in other major sports leagues.
I'll be honest, I for me being a fan of
all the sports, and I do enjoy parody, and I
I think it ends up making for a greater product
when everyone has a chance to be good, and in
baseball everyone does. And it's supposed to be the beauty
(34:40):
of no salary cap, but there's a lot of teams
that just don't spend at all that I think a
salary floor would be massive for the game. The owners
will never do a salary floor unless there's a salary cap,
and the players will never do a salary cap, so
it's really it's kind of a non starter conversation, while
(35:00):
seemingly it should be an easier conversation. The players were
seventy one percent opposed, fifteen percent floor, no cap, which
that's like the dream situation.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
So I mean, I think if all of them were
told that's one of the foltes you can have here.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
Yeah, I was surprised. Thirteen and a half percent said
in favor. I wonder if those are guys on small
market teams that are just like, hey, I'd love to
have a little more help. Wish my team had a
little more fight to it. It gets brought up and
I know the Oakland can be a joke whichever way
(35:40):
you want to address it at this point. But imagine
being a young player in Oakland. Man, like, Okay, I've
got to be good on a bad team for four
or five years and then just hope to get traded somewhere.
That stinks. They're supposed to be living out there MLB
dream that really stinks. I did. Like, Uh, one of
(36:03):
the players said, there technically is a salary floor. It
would just be twenty six guys making the minimum. M Like, yeah,
you're right, that's that's not the intention in theory. Uh,
in a perfect world, if MLB came out with a
salary floor, it would be eighty million dollars one hundred
(36:24):
million dollars and every team has to hit that so
free agency, more guys will get paid. You would want
to go out and how long in free How long
did free agency drag out this year that only a
couple teams were involved because only a couple teams had
to be involved?
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Yeah, in theory, if you our team that needed to
add forty million in salary this year, wouldn't you go
lock up twenty two million that you like?
Speaker 1 (36:51):
Well, I also think it would be interesting because say
Jun Carlos Stanton, who was a discussion of you know,
are the Yankees ever gonna have to move on from
his salary? Imagine those trades would become a lot more prevalent, like, hey,
we're gonna trade you Stanton with some prospects. You eat
(37:14):
up cap space. Maybe you can retap into Stanton and
then maybe you can flip them again. That I I
if a floor could happen without a cap, I think
it would be good for the game. I don't think
it could ever happen in the where the players end
up being right is like show Hayes contract, Like with
(37:35):
a salary cap. I don't know if they ever could
have done something like that, you'd have to think about
it a lot more. Yeah, you'd have to think about
that future money a lot more. Instead, Uh, it became
seven hundred million dollars became a no brainer for the
Los Angeles Dodgers. So uh, I don't know. Always fun
(37:56):
to get into player's minds a little bit. Thank you
to every one at the Athletic who contributed to that article.
And I'll now look for that annually because I think
it's a fun concept. I wonder where Ron Lacuney Junior
is next year MLB. I don't know. Go listen to
talking Baseball. I'm not gonna do a full around the
(38:18):
horn like I said. Yankees Dodgers is pretty electric. Royals
are winning over some heartstrings with me. Plujay's continue to
fight on. We can do more. Maybe later this week,
might do something with foolish. I think the other news,
because I already talked about early, Boston is up to
(38:39):
nothing on Dallas. Like I mentioned, I was at Yankees
Dodgers while that game was going on, so there's a
lot of people watching on their phones and we're getting
bits and pieces that I don't have the in depth
analysis for you. I think the Celtics had control of
that game. Dallas gives them one late scare. Excuse me, doll.
(39:01):
Boston took control of that game. I don't know. It's
looking Boston again. Listen to Simmons and Risillo a lot.
I think Simmons said their record on the year now
is like seventy nine and twenty if you do regular
season in playoffs, that's very rare air for NBA teams.
Boston is thirty seven and four at home this year.
(39:22):
They are very good. The Tatum Brown stuff is getting entertaining.
I am enjoying what Jason Kidd did and poking fun
at our Celtics fans in the office, mostly Zoe from
We Got Ice the Brown is the better player argument.
There's a little smoke and fire there. I'm interested to
see the next parts of it, especially if they continue
(39:44):
to roll. But I think the biggest thing that everyone
in the basketball landscape already knows and if you're a
big team USA guy Drew Holliday, Man, I think this
guy is about to enter I don' want to say
the role player Hall of Fame because he might end
up in the actual Hall of Fame if he gets
(40:06):
his second ring. And USA guy like constantly contributing, Yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
Mean he may be here for more.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
Like Who's who would that all all team be? It
would be like Iguadala, Yeah, he'd Holiday, Iguadala.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
The guy guys who like embraced the lesser role is
Bosh there, he's he started Holiday.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
I know Chris Bosh was so good Team USA. Chris
Bosh was so gnarly God Chris Bosh eleven time All Star,
like how many.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
I don't disagree with the assessment. He's probably too good.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
Two time All Star, six time All Defensive Team. No,
I think Bosh is too good. I think you want
to start looking at you don't want to go too
too low with it. I was almost gonna say, Mario Ellie,
that's in a different league. I don't know. I've already
(41:12):
told the people on this I am a New York
sports fan, grew up in Connecticut. That's kind of the
fighting lines for New York and Baston. I'm at grips
with Boston winning. I already told told you that that
in my head, that means the Yankees have a better
chance to win this year because I don't know historic
sports franchises, it's been a minute since they've won. I'll
(41:34):
use that as a coping mechanism, and I think the
bigger thing that in a non douche way, like I
like Drew Holliday. Drew Holliday plays the game the right way.
Jalen Brown, I'm kind of about man. Every quote and
the way he plays is pretty sick. I'm a little
(41:54):
bit of a Tatum hater, but so is like the
world right now. So I'm interested to see how those
next steps play up. But like I like Horford, Horford's
the man, what he's still doing at his age. So
I'm I'm very much at grips with this in Porzingis
like someone the other day was like, dude, Porzingis is
so good, and it's like, yeah, Nicks fans kind of saw.
(42:18):
Just wasn't a lot of help. Stuff wasn't a lot
of help and he was young, and there's a couple injuries.
I don't know. I'm hoping Dallas can take it to six.
I'm hoping Luca can pull something out of his bag.
Kyrie really hasn't shown up yet, So when's that? When's
the next game? June twelfth, Wednesday?
Speaker 2 (42:37):
Yeah, travel just.
Speaker 1 (42:39):
A little space out for me, just a little bit,
come on, NBA. Uh. So that's it. Like I told you,
we were at Yankees Dodgers. It was a good time.
I'll be excited to watch Wednesday, and we'll be excited
to see you guys Wednesday with another episode of Wake
and Jake. Beebes tell the people.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Wake and Jake is a production of Dan Patrick Productions,
John Boy Media, and Workhouse Media.
