Speaker 1 (00:03):
The following is a presentation of the College Athletes Network.
What's Up, Everybody? Welcome to the Gimme Timmy Podcast? Is
this episode sixteen I'm True Timmy. I got my co

(00:26):
host and producer Noah Buono here on the iHeartRadio and
College Athletes Network. Make sure y'are subscribed to the podcast.
Leave us at five star review. You guys know we
appreciate it, Noah, what's good? Mine? Guy? I was that was?
That was my first name in Toronto? While how did
I do? Man? I loved it, and I loved it
more that you nailed my last name. I mean, so
many people butcher it and you nailed it and people

(00:48):
won't see it. But you had your hand up like
you were really part of the Italian mob. You know,
you know mean you you You looked great doing it,
sounded great. Feel like I have to give it like
the Simpsons, like fat Tonys to really like pronunciate it correctly.
I've had people say that to me before, like you
know what, I'm gonna say it with the accident, I'm
gonna put my hand up to it helps me, It
helps me produce it because I'll be struggling with it

(01:09):
sometimes if you've seen our early episodes, it was a
struggle for me. I feel like my last name is
holding me back from greatness because people don't know how
to pronounce it. They're just like, who's this Noah Buana?
Like I got to Duquane my freshman year or my
freshman or my fourth year of college when I transferred there,
and the trainer I joked with him to this day
about it. He was like, Um, Noah Bonino, buddy, where's

(01:32):
the eye in my name? Nino? I mean, come on.
Butcher did all right. Anyway. In terms of today's episode,
we got a little bit of a shorter one. You know,
we had some scheduling conflicts with our guest that was
supposed to come on. So whatever, you guys just just
you're stuck with me and Drew. But I think that
we're fun enough to kind of keep this thing rolling
and it's a good switch up. We still got a

(01:54):
bunch of stuff in store today, Like the Zags had
a great week last week, dominant at LMU, big game
for Drew and Julian at Pepper nine. We got the
Game Day crew going a Spokane this Saturday, the biggest
game of the year. Verse Saint Mary's the rematch. So
a lot of cool stuff coming up in this episode
that we're going to hit on. I'm excited for. But
first off, Drew, why don't we just when we just

(02:16):
hit on the All Star Game really quick? Because we're
both hoop both hoop lovers. You're still playing, gonna be
in the NBA next year? Like like the All Star
Game itself, Like did you watch it? What'd you think
of it? There's a lot of takes going on online
just about what the product was, Like what what do
you think? I wasn't able to watch it, but I
watched the highlights. I thought the dunk contest, like Mac

(02:37):
McClung did some really cool dunks. Honestly, what looked the
most interesting from the All Star Game was the one
on one that Jason Tatum and Chalin Brown are kind
of fucking around with. I mean, I feel like that
maybe you should be something that like needs to be
a thing, like who doesn't want to see like Kyrie
Irving and like Kevin Durant and like, you know, I

(02:58):
don't know, like even like a Joe Johnson play like
one on one King of the King of the Court.
Like I feel like that would be like so crazy
and the entertaining and like, oh they'll put like two
hundred k on the line for it's like they actually
like get in their bag or something like. I think
that would be the most fun part about the All
Star Game. I was actually talking to one of the
guys I work with about like the King of the

(03:20):
Court one on one style. I know people have thrown
the one on one idea out there, like maybe in
place of the skills competition, but we were like wondering,
like how would it look, And I feel like it'd
be like you have two ends. You have three guys
on each end, six total King of the Court on
each maybe you play to a certain amount to you know,

(03:41):
at three different spots, and then you take the winner
whoever won the most spots at each side of the
court at each end. The two winners then come together
and play and like whatever you call it the championship,
and there's you know, so there's two rounds of it,
like that qualifier around kind of like they do in
the three point contest, Like everybody gets a round one
and then they take the top three scores and you

(04:02):
get into the fine I don't know, I feel like
the one on one in the All Star Weekends probably
necessary at this point. Would all like the lack of competition.
I feel like they should do like a four like groups,
so like like two two two and like do a
little bracket and the fans vote. I'm like, who like
the top eight guys, and based on the votes is
who you match up with, and you kind of just

(04:23):
bracket your way to like the winner. You think, like
to display each other. You're saying, yeah, I mean ib
to see like guys like that probably wouldn't do it,
but like I was saying, because they're the top vote getters,
So I was like, but yeah, I mean that would
you bring all the ratings in the world if you
get Lebron and Janni's playing one on one, that'd be insane.
That would be crazy. That's what I mean. I just

(04:44):
feel like they need a little bit of a I'm
not I don't stand alone in this. I think everybody
kind of feels it. That was watching All Star Weekend
was kind of just like this needs a little bit
more pop. And you mentioned mc McClung like before he
came and did that. I mean the dunk contest was yeah,
but like also it's like what are they playing for? Like,
I don't know, I kind of feel like it's hard

(05:04):
for them to want to play when it's like, why
would I want to play in this game that really
doesn't mean anything, Like it's dope as fun to be
an All Star bet like you know, like it's it's
probably super cool, but like, do those guys really want
to like do the All Star week or would they
rather have like a weak break in the middle of
a long ass season when like the All Star game
doesn't really like have any implication. You know, I feel

(05:25):
like it's kind of hard to motivate people without insensive Really. Yeah,
I forget what media member I heard talking about this,
but they were saying, like the reason that it's like that,
where like there's no incentive for them to play, is
because like we like we live in the ring culture,
where like nothing everybody in the media and like all
the fans now have made it this way that like
nothing matters besides the Ring, which to a certain extent

(05:47):
is true, but like I don't know, like you know,
it makes like these All Star games and even the
regular season like kind of makes it not matter to
a certain extent. Yeah, I mean, I don't feel like
a player like even like Charles Barkley would be as
love today now with just how like ring ring dominant
everything is, you know, just because like he never won.

(06:07):
He was obviously like a great all time player, but
it's like it's so ring dominant now it's like would
he be his value now? Like O don't Now, I'm
trying to think a guy like shit, Damarta Rose and
like he's an od player, but like he hasn't won
a ring, so like do do people really value him
for as good as he actually is now or no
because he doesn't have one. You know, that's a great example.

(06:29):
There's a ton of players you could throw into that
Damarta Rose in category that's like oh yeah, talented, great,
but like never gonna win a ring or never did
win a ring, Like you know, I'm okay off him
like doesn't even get mentioned, which is crazy because he's
the hell of a player, you know. Yeah. The ring
culture thing is an interesting like topic because like it's
definitely changed the landscape of like how we view the

(06:49):
game and then how like you players like play it
in certain moments because like you know, it doesn't really
end up mattering until the playoffs, which is when it
should matter, of course, but like it shouldn't matter the most.
But yeah, yeah, I agree with what you're say. Eighty
two games. It's tough. It's like I actually did I
really liked what Anthony Edwards said. He was like, uh,

(07:10):
what do you say? He said something about like how
he's gonna go out there and play all eighty two games.
If there was one thing he could change about the league,
it would be like just that guys played more games
and that there was no load management. Like I do
feel bad, Like I get it, but like I do
feel bad for like the fans that go to see
like a Curry or somebody or a Lebron and they're
not playing. Guy was working out some of the little

(07:33):
elementary school kids that we work out. They were saying, like, oh,
you know, we're going to see Steph and Clay. We're
going to the Cavs game. And like the Warriors were
playing a back to back and the Calves were the
second second night of the back to back and they
sat Wiggins, Curry, Clay and Draymond all sat did not play,
And I was just like damn, Like I guess, like

(07:53):
because I knew the kids that were gonna go. I
felt bad for them, Like these kids were all like
wearing it, you know, talking about wearing their Curry jerseys,
and they couldn't even go to the They went to
the game and even get to see their favorite player.
So yeah, I mean that's a tough one though, Like
everyone's like people back then didn't like take days off
and stuff, YadA, YadA YadA. But like I mean, like

(08:14):
rest is important. Like I ain't gonna lie. I'm not
saying I'm like a total supporter of load management, but
like every every new everybody now and then needs a break,
and like I think I think it could get better, obviously,
But at the same time, like you know, it's it's
like the players and you gotta do what you gotta
do to win a championship. And clearly the Warriors, like
per se know what they're doing with load management, like

(08:36):
they know what it takes to get there. They know
It's like you can't really fault them for doing what
it takes to win. I guess you could say, yeah,
all Star weekends interesting, that whole dynamic. There's so many
like interesting issues around the NBA that are interesting that
you're gonna get thrown right into next year. And I
don't I don't take you for a guy that's gonna
end up being a load management guy. You're gonna be
a gonna be a seventy eight game type of guy,

(08:58):
just like a bruiser every game. You're gonna play through
the pain. You got that. That's my sum. You got
that gritty like, yeah, I'm just gonna grind through this,
fuck it type of That's how I look at you.
I'd like to I like to see myself as a
blue collar guy. So yeah, that's good, all right, ain't pretty,
but it's gonna get done. Let's take a quick break here.

(09:18):
We got a bunch of stuff up. We're gonna talk
about some LMU pepperdine uh college game day coming to
Spokane Saint Mary's. That's all coming up right when we
come back. All right, and we're back on episode sixteen
of the Gimme Timmy Podcast. Drew, Let's not waste any time. Man.
You guys absolutely slaughtered l m U. I mean like
it was. It was a slaughterfest from the very moment

(09:41):
the game started. Quite frankly, it became unwatchable very quickly.
Like I love watching you guys play, but I was like,
I'm I'm I'm not watching this game, like goodbye. Yeah no,
I mean obviously we were pretty amped up for that
game we lost to them, and we thought, you know,
as bad as we played, we shouldn't have lost what
we did, and we had to get our lick back

(10:02):
and it felt good to you know, kind of beat
the brakes off just because of you know, what happened.
So it felt good, and especially like not like not
playing most that first half because a foul trouble and
everyone just like going stupid, Like it was just so
fun to watch and just have that such a great
team win where everyone was just so locked into defense
and everything. It was. It was it was a fun

(10:23):
game to be a part of, for sure. Yeah, no,
it looked like a fun team win. All those people
were standing in line waiting for like tickets to get
into the game for hours, is what the broadcast was saying.
And then they, you know, they didn't get much of
a show to watch. So you guys did a great
job on Cam Shelton too. That was cool, just because
like minimizing him really takes away their whole their whole

(10:44):
game plan. I mean, like it couldn't get into anything. Well,
the dude's been dropping like thirty and forty point games,
like you kind of gotta try to take them to
good bounce back win for you guys. Then you go
Saturday night Pepper nine. They got talented players on that team,
like they got the Porter kid, could be a first
round pick. Like, I mean, they just have some good
dudes on that team. I don't really know what the

(11:06):
deeper thing is that they can't put it together anyway.
You thirty four points, I think seven rebounds another just
other Drew Timmy performance, I mean, feeling good out there.
Postseason play is on its way, Like we're making free throws.
We are making free throws, and yeah, we are making
free throws. Great sight to see, man, it's a it's

(11:28):
like a it's good to see you get comfortable up there,
more comfortable up there and just kind of find once
you find a rhythm up there, dude, Like that's that's
all we changed the routine up It's smooth and soft.
Now that's what coaching. I'd be saying, smooth and soft,
And so what'd you change? Just like take my breath
because you know sometimes I get up there I'm just
so like tense and tight and just amped up from
like playing and just like hanging around and then there

(11:50):
and everything and then like get to line, taking my
deep breath, just one two, no pocket, no hole, just
straight shooting, and then it's been like way easier and
just like honestly, it's made my jump shot feel way
better too, just like continually finding that rhythm. Yeah, because
I was shooting like earlier today actually with my bro
and I was like, dang, like I don't know if
it's because of the free throws or what, but like

(12:11):
I'm just feeling like more like confident and comfortable with
like the rhythm of my shot lately. So I think
that's been helping a lot, which is kind of like
because I think the set shot was like kind of
you know, like it's like you're shooting two different ways
kind of, and now it's like, oh, I'm shooting like
the same way every time on my free throws and everything.
So I think just like continual flows made that like
rhythm muscle memory thing way easier for me to grasp

(12:33):
as I've continued just like to work on my shot. Yeah,
the muscle memory is key, and just getting that rhythm fine,
and being comfortable like when you get to the line
and even when you shoot the jumpers. I mean, me
and you have had you said this last week on
the pod, just the endless discussions that you and I
have about yeah, not only you shooting the jump shot,
but you know, yeah, like just my perspective to you

(12:56):
on just like being comfortable shooting. Just as obviously I
didn't shoot the ball at a high level in college
because I didn't really play, but my track record for
nailing three pointers is great, So I'm comfortable giving I'm
comfortable giving anybody a tip on, you know, how to
make their shot better. Very kind. I don't care who
you are. I would look at Lebron James and say, yeah, man,

(13:18):
you know you do a little bit more of this
at the free throw, like I that's how confident I
am in my anyway. But we've had those conversations and
I think, like, you know, just sitting at home watching
watching on TV, I'm like, yeah, you just look way
more comfortable, you know, in your routine at the line,
and it's showing. I mean, I don't know what you're shooting.
The last couple of games, I should have done the
numbers before the show, but like, you're you haven't missed

(13:40):
more than two a game. I don't think last like,
I think I've missed the past two games. So when
I change it, I think, I'm like, I think, I'm
like I missed four, and I'm like, out of like
fifteen sixteen, maybe let me see really quick, because I
got it right here. I love diving into Drew Timmy's
numbers while he's staring me in the face, because if

(14:01):
they're good, he's gonna get a compliment. If they're bad,
I'm gonna yeah, you know. And I was like, this
is the free throw when they called the flagrant and
I had to go to the line and no one
was up there and it was just me by myself.
Oh yeah, and I knocked both of those done. I
was like, oh yeah, this free though, this free throw
thing might be might be on the up and up now. Finally, yeah,

(14:21):
these are your So going all the way back to
the Saint Mary's game seven of nine, the next game
you had a rough one usf you were five of nine,
But since then five for six, another seven for nine,
and then four for six, so you're you're all those
games are roughly you know, pushing seventy percent above above
seventy percent. Um. So it's good. It's been good to see,

(14:45):
and it's gonna come. It's gonna play a big role
down the stretch like that comfort you know at the line,
and what it's gonna do for you and the team.
And you know they're free points, man, you gotta have them.
Gotta have them free, free, free free. Um. Yeah. So
Pepper nine thirty four points. I saw this crazy stat too.
It was like, I'm gonna I'm gonna butcher because I

(15:07):
don't have it in front of me. I couldn't find
the tweet, but it was something about like you being
the only player in the last twenty five years of
college basketball to have eight games, seven or eight games
of like thirty plus points and shoot seventy percent from
the field. So damn, guy's good at basketball, man. That's

(15:29):
pretty cool. Guy's good at hoops. That's pretty cool, Pretty
easy for him. M Yeah. But let's take our last
break here. We got the Saint Mary's preview Big Time
matchup for a share of that title College game Day
coming to Spokane. Drew's thoughts on all that coming up
right when we come back, all right, and we're back
on episode sixteen of the Gimme Timmy Podcast. Man, I've

(15:50):
been waiting to talk about this the whole episode, Drew.
I'm coming to Spokane this weekend college Game Day and
Jay Billis and all the crew is coming two Spokane
for game Day Saturday morning. And on top of it,
they're coming because it's the biggest game of the year,
Saint Mary's Gonzaga ranked Verse ranked rematch. It's for a

(16:12):
share of the title. I mean, I already know how
excited me and everybody else's but as the guy at
the forefront of it all man talk to us, I mean,
we're excited obviously, like those guys beat us, so like
kind of like lmu, like we want to get our
lick back, Like we feel like we feel like we
could have won that game and we didn't, and we

(16:32):
feel like we owe it to them to give us
give them our best shot and hopefully pull it away.
But uh, I mean college game day wins. I don't
know if they've ever been here. I think they might
have been a Gonzaga but like before before I even
really knew about them, per se, so like so like
it'll be so great to come here and like, I
think it's just a testament to like Saint Mary's and

(16:53):
US as a programs, like where we've come from, because
I would like, I think like Indiana and Purdue are
playing like this weekend, and a lot of people like,
why aren't you going there? Like I think it's pretty
cool that they're coming, like gonzagas Saint Mary's. I think
it's a testament to like both programs and how much
like they've like we've grown in the noted ride we
have nationwide that like college Game Day would even be
like oh shit, like we're coming to like a WCC game.

(17:15):
So I think that's pretty cool. A little cool storyline
is how much this conference is really grown and stuff too.
That's a great point. I don't think a lot of
people like that are not fully attached to it, especially
as much as you are. Really even think about like, yeah,
I mean game the Game Day crew, like they're gonna
host that event at your school, like in front of
your guys' fans, free to enter, and it's just great

(17:36):
for your university, like you said, obviously great for Saint Mary's.
But it's happening, you know in the kennel, which is,
which I think is a top place and the obviously
I'm very biased, but like I think it's one of
the best places to play. That place gets fucking rocking
it is I'm telling you, bro, when just wait for
like I don't know when it is like six months
before the game, when everyone starts jumping around, I mean

(17:59):
it like it goes into your heart and soul, Like
you will get pumped up just sitting there. Like I
am such an energetic, like juiced up guy for the
most part always so like like I just I'm gonna
be uncontrollable in the crowd, Like I mean, I'm just
gonna feed off the energy as if I'm playing, Like
I just I love shit like that, and I'm just

(18:21):
I'm excited to just be a part of it. Come
to the game. I'm really looking forward to seeing it
live and just seeing the atmosphere in the kennel. Like
I've been to some cool like college basketball environments, like
like we played at Dayton my last year. The year
prior was COVID. There was no fans in there, but
like Dayton packs that thing thirteen thousand to the brim,
like big ass stadium. It's where they host the round,

(18:43):
the first four round games. Those two games are always
at Dayton Bro. It's an insane stadium. It's insane crowd,
and I know the Kennel's got the same type of vibe.
So yeah, I'm juiced up to go there. I'm juiced
up to be around the Timmy gang and just see
the game. Like you guys, we talked about LMU and
Pepperdine and you guys kind of getting revenge on LM.

(19:03):
You and and just the slaughtering you put on them.
You know, I'm not I'm not predicting the slaughtering here,
but the way you guys lost against Saint Mary's you
know that other time was is unfortunate because you were
controlling the whole game and then the offense stalled late
in the second half. So it's just similar feeling like,
you know, lost to them like you did LMU, Like

(19:24):
you gotta gave your lick back. Yeah, like I stole
your words, got to just because like I don't know.
And then um, yeah they said some stuff too on
ESPN after their game. They were like Gonzaga like is
the stepping stone and we want to step over that?
Like all right, all right, good luck you know, so

(19:49):
like it's got a little a little got a little
spice to it, you know, so like it gain this game.
I'm already rebbed up for it. And to be cliche though,
like I mean, san Diego is coming, like we have
like if we don't want if we fuck around and
we lose that game, like then the game that means nothing.
I think that was like actually a big message we
had today, like within like our team was like look

(20:11):
like like you know, like everyone's obviously amped up for
this Saint Mary's game, but look, san Diego has like
the third best offense in our league, like if even
better than Pepperdine. Like if we if we don't mess around,
then it's in like we fucking rounded up losing, Like
what's the point of the Saint you know what I'm saying,
what's the point of the Saint Mary's game? Like if
we don't if we just want to overlook them and
then fuck around and like even lose or something like,

(20:33):
then the then the game is no point. It's kind
of stupid to play. So like it's a it's a
big business week for us, and I think it's even
bigger in the bigger picture, Like when you're like in
the tournament, like you know, we saw it, like Veya
lost to UNBC the other day. Like it's one of
those things like if you really overlook anybody, like you're fucked.

(20:54):
And I think this is a good preparation for like
March when we get down the road, because like if
you look someone might not look good on paper, but
you know, like in March, like anybody can get hotter
than the given time. And I think this week is
a huge like preparation week for US for down the
road of the tournament. So that's kind of what I'm
excited for too as a team, Like how are we
going to be able to handle this week because this

(21:14):
is a big prep week for stuff down the road
and it's going to be huge for us because especially
because we've been in a lot of ups and downs
this year. But this situation is kind of unique in
the fact that there's so much hype around this game
that like we can't really fuck around and forget about
this USD game too. So I'm kind of excited to
see how we handle this, and I think we can
grow a lot as a team from this week in general. Now,

(21:37):
you couldn't have said it better. It's a great point
because like we didn't even like as we're getting all
juiced up and excited for the Saint Mary's game, like,
you know, there is still that other game to be played.
And yeah, if you guys don't take care of business,
which which we have seen before that we have, we
can fuck around and you know, get any we were
more than capable of fucking around and losing a game.

(21:58):
So it's really important for us, you know, to like
be mature about this week. Shout out to the captain
Drew tim that was a great pep talk. And I
want to I want to play. Can I have a
pair of shoes? Can I be a walk on for
this this week's late of games pace. That was a
little bit of my serious side. It doesn't come out
too much, not on. It's a great point, dude, Like,

(22:19):
and you know, it's good that you're you guys are
all relaying that message because heads are in the right
spot and and and that goes to the bigger point
that you guys have just been playing better basketball of late.
Maybe the ending of the Pepperdine game got a little
bit you know, touching, but like, dudes have been hooping
like especially Julian Obviously we talked to him last week,
you talk to him every day, but his play, his

(22:40):
production at that level, it adds another level to the
dynamic of the team that makes you guys like close
to unbeatable. Yeah, and then you get like Hunter, Anton, Nolan,
Russi or Malachai. Like like the thing about it is
like it's cool if I score like thirty forty points,
but they're just not realistic to do that every game.
Like and when when everyone's chipping, then it makes it's

(23:04):
so much easier to play. Like the LMU game, everyone's
like I saw a bunch of stuff. It's like, oh,
Drew Gonzaga is up by forty and Drew Timuli has
two points, and I was like it was crazy to
think about, but it was like it was awesome, Like yeah,
that's when, right, that's when everyone's aggressive, everyone's looking to score,
everyone's you know, that's when everyone's getting the piece of

(23:24):
the pot. That's that's the most fun basketball ever. And
I think that's something that like we're coming into is
everyone's getting more comfortable and confident. That's what I'm really
excited about this team, is everyone's looking to score everyone's
looking to be more aggressive, and that's what it's going
to take in order to be successful and gets where
we want to go. Is this continuance of just confidence
and comfortability on the court, no doubt. Man, you guys

(23:46):
are kind of starting to put it all together right
at the right time, is what it seems like. And
it's nice to see all these guys kind of stepping up,
buying into these roles. And I saw some tweets too,
like the same thing about like you two points, they're
up forty. But like one of the tweets that I
saw that said that was also just like zag's got dudes,
Like you guys got dude. Yeah, Like we got dudes.

(24:07):
And I think it's huge that, Like I think in
the in the bigger picture, that's that's awesome that that happened.
Like I mean, I just the confidence of everyone, like
you just has to go up after a game like that.
So like I was so excited for that. It was great. Yeah.
Now this is the big, big week of games. Let's
let's we're hoping Thursday goes the way we all wanted
to go, so that Saturday is is big of a

(24:28):
matchup as it should be. It's for a share of
the title you guys have. I believe you've had one.
I mean, you were trying to figure this out earlier.
If you've won seventeen in a row or fifteen in
a row consecutive, um, you know, outright regular season titles,
or if you've had a piece of sixteen seventeen in
a row, whatever the number is. But yeah, I mean
that's what puts the stakes of this game at an

(24:50):
enormous It's enormous. My other thing that you know, I
mentioned Jay billis and those guys are gonna be there.
We could get this ninety four feet or what we
talked about it. We called them out on the pot
of it. I called him out on the pot about it.
I hope. So this is the this is the moment
that I've been waiting for, right, I hope I get it.
Of all college basketball players that hasn't gotten one, you
have four years, four years, it's gonna get you on

(25:12):
your last or your second to last regular season home
game of your career. He's finally gonna get you. That's
it's the timing of It's kind of crazy, but you know,
storybook ending, baby, Let's get it. I'm excited. I'm excited.
Oh yeah, let's go. This week's gonna be a good one.
Hopefully get that ninety four feet and just exagination's gonna
be out and about. Like I mean, I'm ready to

(25:34):
I think I'm ready to play. Right now, we could
suit up. I'm I'm already shaken, but I gotta save
that for next week. Man, Guys, thanks so much for listening,
tuning in and we really appreciated it. Again, sorry that
we didn't have a guest. Some scheduling errors occurred, but
